:00:05. > :00:09.Welcome to the programme. In the programme tonight: Don't leave us

:00:09. > :00:13.in a lay-by in labour. Opposition mounts to plans to reduce maternity

:00:13. > :00:16.services in North Yorkshire. Also tonight: Copycat rioters are

:00:16. > :00:19.spared jail after attacking a police station.

:00:20. > :00:25.Have you been chugged? Calls for regulation of so-called charity

:00:25. > :00:28.muggers. And a little too real for comfort.

:00:28. > :00:32.A new simulation training unit for health staff gives a hairy biker

:00:32. > :00:36.more than he thought he had signed up for.

:00:36. > :00:39.Nothing quite so dramatic in sport but plenty to look forward to. We

:00:39. > :00:49.will meet the students on the FA Cup trail and find out why the

:00:49. > :00:55.

:00:55. > :00:58.Black Cats and the Boro aren't the 300 people packed a public meeting

:00:58. > :01:02.in North Yorkshire last night in protest at plans to slash maternity

:01:02. > :01:05.and children services at a hospital. Some expectant mothers might have

:01:05. > :01:10.to travel nearly 70 miles if changes are made at the Friarage

:01:10. > :01:12.Hospital in Northallerton. The South Tees Hospital Trust says the

:01:12. > :01:18.moves are necessary due to recruitment problems and new

:01:18. > :01:22.standards demanded by the Royal College.

:01:22. > :01:26.It has never been straightforward having babies in a rural area.

:01:26. > :01:34.Vicky is expecting hers in July. The maternity ward is nearly 40

:01:34. > :01:38.miles away but at least they are expecting her. And down as high

:01:38. > :01:43.risk this time because of what happened in the previous pregnancy

:01:43. > :01:48.so again, at the moment, everything is fine but I'm only in the early

:01:48. > :01:53.stages of pregnancy so later on, conditions could happen.

:01:53. > :01:56.But the Friarage Hospital may not be available for much longer.

:01:56. > :01:59.Vicky's a high risk pregnancy and the trust which runs the hospital

:01:59. > :02:01.is proposing that those would-be mums are sent elsewhere. The plan,

:02:01. > :02:04.together with others to make children's services day-care only,

:02:04. > :02:07.has caused an uproar. There were more than 300 people at a public

:02:07. > :02:10.meeting in Northallerton last night. It's all up for consultation but

:02:10. > :02:13.that hasn't stopped it being the talk of small communities all over

:02:13. > :02:15.the Dales. From here in Hawes, it could mean expectant mums

:02:15. > :02:24.travelling much further to hospitals on Teesside in York,

:02:24. > :02:28.Harrogate and Leeds. The anxiety, the peace of mind of young,

:02:28. > :02:32.expectant mothers having to travel that sort of distance means that I

:02:32. > :02:38.think it would completely upset their joyful experience of having a

:02:38. > :02:41.birth. Quite clearly, we are going to be entering into the land of

:02:41. > :02:45.lay-by births because many will not make it. Mums like Natasha know how

:02:45. > :02:50.close things can be even under the existing arrangements. Huffing and

:02:50. > :02:55.puffing in the back seat over the hills and dales expert trying not

:02:55. > :03:02.to give birth in the car or and I just needed to A&E. And then

:03:02. > :03:08.there's the kids. 30 minutes makes a lot of difference if your child

:03:08. > :03:18.is having difficulties. I think we could lose out on services like

:03:18. > :03:18.

:03:18. > :03:21.that. Last August you might remember riots and widespread

:03:21. > :03:26.looting of shops occurred in London and some other cities around the

:03:26. > :03:28.country. The North escaped apart from one incident on Wearside.

:03:29. > :03:37.Today three teenagers who attacked Washington police station and

:03:37. > :03:40.torched a police car with petrol bombs walked free from court.

:03:40. > :03:43.Walking away with his family. 17 year-old Jordan Dixon from

:03:43. > :03:46.Washington leaves Newcastle Crown Court. Together with 19 year-old

:03:46. > :03:51.Jamie Nolan and 17 year-old Nicky Schofield, also of Washington, he

:03:51. > :03:54.was convicted of attacking the town's police station. A brick

:03:54. > :03:58.thrown through a window showered a PC working inside who suffered eye

:03:58. > :04:08.injuries from broken glass. At least two petrol bombs were thrown

:04:08. > :04:09.

:04:09. > :04:12.and a squad car destroyed. The prosecutor said this was an attack

:04:12. > :04:16.on an arm of the state, an attack on police officers who were

:04:16. > :04:21.involved in maintaining law and order needed at this time. The

:04:21. > :04:24.intention was extremely bad and foolish but the physical injury was

:04:24. > :04:31.limited to one police officer and the cost to the state, less than

:04:31. > :04:37.15,000. The court heard it was a copycat attack from the London at

:04:37. > :04:41.riots last year. The judge said there were city's that had

:04:41. > :04:48.widespread looting of shops but in this region, it did not occur which

:04:48. > :04:51.the people of it should take pride. There was one exception when the

:04:51. > :04:56.copybook was blotted and it was plotted by a new three and others.

:04:56. > :05:01.That said, it must be kept in two proportion added peeled into

:05:01. > :05:04.insignificance when compared with what else was going on. Because the

:05:04. > :05:06.defendants had spent time in custody awaiting trial, Dixon and

:05:06. > :05:12.Schofield were sentenced to youth offending orders and three-month

:05:12. > :05:16.night-time curfews. Nolan was given a 12 month suspended jail sentence.

:05:16. > :05:20.They're known as chuggers or charity muggers. The people who

:05:20. > :05:23.stop you on the high street and ask you to sign up or send a text to

:05:23. > :05:26.make a donation to charity. They are usually employed by agencies

:05:26. > :05:30.which are then paid by the charity according to how many donations

:05:30. > :05:32.they get. But one of our councils now wants to introduce a bylaw to

:05:32. > :05:42.control what it says can sometimes be an intimidating experience for

:05:42. > :05:44.

:05:44. > :05:54.shoppers. 30 seconds after parking the car

:05:54. > :05:57.and did I know about the snow leopard? Cut to the chase! To help

:05:57. > :06:01.say that the snow leopard, I needed to send a text to a number and the

:06:01. > :06:06.money would go from my mobile account. I would rather give it to

:06:06. > :06:11.my favourite charity, does that bother you? It does not bother me.

:06:11. > :06:14.In Newcastle, the council things this operation is exploiting at

:06:14. > :06:18.legal loophole because it that chuggers were collecting cash, they

:06:18. > :06:24.would need a permit but because no cash is actually changing hands

:06:24. > :06:29.here, they don't. My picture there was polite. The council says there

:06:29. > :06:33.are those who are not. The chuggers used some extremely aggressive

:06:33. > :06:37.techniques, quite manipulative. There can be very emotional about

:06:37. > :06:41.the way they present the case to people and I think they often take

:06:41. > :06:45.advantage of people's good natures. Here, we give a lot of money to

:06:45. > :06:50.charity and I would be worried that local charities would be

:06:50. > :06:57.disadvantaged by these techniques. Just around the corner, more

:06:57. > :07:07.chuggers. This one is having success. two for a cancer charity.

:07:07. > :07:07.

:07:07. > :07:15.Was the person polite enough? he seemed like a nicer bloke.

:07:15. > :07:21.donated to reward politeness. have been up to speak to Newcastle

:07:22. > :07:25.in a toga and had a meeting and Newcastle has always been reticent

:07:25. > :07:29.to work with us and I am not entirely sure why that should be

:07:29. > :07:34.because we can offer solutions they want. There are times when the

:07:34. > :07:42.chugger will not go or perhaps it is the case that this one knows a

:07:42. > :07:45.skinflint when she sees one kicks Mark! The government's bailing out

:07:45. > :07:47.the North Cumbria Hospitals Trust to help pay debts built up after

:07:47. > :07:51.the construction of the 87 million Cumberland hospital under a PFI

:07:51. > :07:54.contract. It will share in a 1.5 billion fund set up for seven

:07:54. > :07:58.trusts across the country that are struggling with the financial

:07:58. > :08:00.burden of the Private Finance Initiative. Earlier this week the

:08:00. > :08:04.North Cumbria Trust announced a takeover by the neighbouring

:08:04. > :08:06.Northumbria Healthcare Trust. Two men who were seriously injured

:08:07. > :08:11.in a microlight crash in Northumberland have each been

:08:11. > :08:13.awarded a six-figure sum in compensation. Jim Martin and Jon

:08:13. > :08:19.Kerr crash-landed in trees near Morpeth after their aircraft's tail

:08:19. > :08:21.snapped off mid-flight in 2007. The aircraft's French manufacturer

:08:21. > :08:28.denied liability but an air accident investigation found that

:08:28. > :08:30.aluminium bolts used to attach the tail fin to the plane had corroded.

:08:30. > :08:35.Solicitors have now successfully argued that the bolts were

:08:35. > :08:39.defective. A new children's drama for the CBBC

:08:39. > :08:42.channel is being made in the North East. It is called Wolfblood and

:08:42. > :08:45.will be filmed in and around Rowlands Gill. It follows in the

:08:45. > :08:49.footsteps of a number of successful children series including Tracy

:08:49. > :08:52.Beaker and Byker Grove which were also shot in the North East.

:08:52. > :08:59.Wolfblood will be a series of 13 half-hour episodes and will air

:08:59. > :09:04.later this year. Schools in West Cumbria are in dire

:09:04. > :09:07.need of investment according to the Labour MP for Copeland, Jamie Reed.

:09:07. > :09:09.Head teachers in Cumbria and the north-east say that since the

:09:09. > :09:12.government scrapped the Building Schools for the Future scheme,

:09:12. > :09:22.there has been no extra cash to replace outdated buildings, leaving

:09:22. > :09:26.some areas neglected. Netherhall School in Maryport.

:09:26. > :09:29.Built in the 1950s and in need of an upgrade. The school missed out

:09:29. > :09:38.when the coalition cancelled Labour's Building Schools for the

:09:38. > :09:41.Future programme. Yes, it was very disappointing. It was very much for

:09:41. > :09:45.us have not just about the condition of the building. Our

:09:45. > :09:49.building is in good condition. It is about suitability of the

:09:49. > :09:57.learning environment, are really key thing for the west coast of

:09:57. > :10:00.Cumbria. That our students can have access to cutting edge facilities.

:10:00. > :10:05.The situation for schools in west Cumbria is getting attention at

:10:05. > :10:10.Westminster. They are in dire need of significant investment and that

:10:10. > :10:12.is why the last government pledged over 60 million through the

:10:12. > :10:17.programme and it was tragic when it was taken whether the government

:10:17. > :10:20.but the need for investment grows, it has not lessened. It is greater

:10:20. > :10:22.than it has ever been. But the local authority says they always

:10:22. > :10:24.doubted Labour's scheme would deliver. They're hoping for money

:10:24. > :10:31.from the government's replacement programme, due to be announced

:10:31. > :10:36.shortly. As far as Building Schools for the Future is concerned,

:10:36. > :10:40.expectations were far beyond the ability to produce the benefits to

:10:40. > :10:46.the schools on that list. The fact that the government have come along

:10:46. > :10:49.with this money, hopefully on, more of our schools will be on that list.

:10:49. > :10:52.The government is being blamed for taking so long to come up with a

:10:52. > :10:56.new plan for school buildings. Even when they do, the rules will be

:10:56. > :10:59.tighter and the money far less plentiful.

:10:59. > :11:04.There's more on the story on Sunday Politics at the earlier time of

:11:04. > :11:08.11am on Sunday morning here on BBC One.

:11:08. > :11:11.Coming up next, a hairy biker gets more than he bargained for. And we

:11:11. > :11:20.meet the unpaid volunteer preparing to sooth troubled limbs at her

:11:20. > :11:28.third Olympics. Get set for snow, it is going to be

:11:28. > :11:33.a really wintry weekend. A new medical training facility

:11:33. > :11:40.costing more than 360,000 has been opened in Gateshead by a hairy

:11:40. > :11:44.biker. The Queen Elizabeth is a chef Simon King's local hospital.

:11:44. > :11:48.He was given at tour of the clinical schools simulation area

:11:48. > :11:58.where people are used to train doctors on replica wards and it is

:11:58. > :12:03.

:12:03. > :12:12.fair to say that Simon found some World apart from chef, Simon King,

:12:12. > :12:22.usual demeanour. It is a remarkable experience. Everything should be as

:12:22. > :12:22.

:12:22. > :12:29.real as possible year. The hard treating creases. Adrenalin is a

:12:29. > :12:39.healthy thing. When you deal with this, you were used to the feeling.

:12:39. > :12:41.

:12:42. > :12:46.Just because it is a dummy does not mean it is less dramatic. I was

:12:46. > :12:56.slightly traumatised. So it is wonderful because it is so

:12:56. > :12:57.

:12:57. > :13:05.realistic. I found myself holding her hand. The facility cost around

:13:05. > :13:15.360,000. In this training run someone is always watching.

:13:15. > :13:17.

:13:17. > :13:26.Students can be monitored and spoken to three this guy a. They

:13:26. > :13:36.have their limits. We can adjust the blood-pressure, heart rate and

:13:36. > :13:40.

:13:40. > :13:48.speak from another room. Does he have any net? I have lost some

:13:48. > :13:58.weight. It is expected hundreds of students will be trained. For Simon,

:13:58. > :14:00.

:14:00. > :14:09.the reality stops here. You should have seen your face

:14:10. > :14:15.during that. It is very realistic. Here is something sporty. She has

:14:15. > :14:21.cared for some other top athletes at Olympic Games. Julie Sparrow is

:14:22. > :14:27.looking forward to doing the same this year. She is a physiotherapist.

:14:27. > :14:37.She has successfully volunteered for 10 weeks unpaid work at this

:14:37. > :14:40.

:14:40. > :14:46.year's Olympics. A bit faster. The most moving

:14:46. > :14:50.parties watching the plane being let. To be part of the support team

:14:50. > :15:00.and be part of the procession of nations is probably the most

:15:00. > :15:02.

:15:02. > :15:08.exciting thing. Olympic experience -- experienced expert in Julie

:15:08. > :15:18.Sparrow is keen. I am in an environment that Sir Chips what I

:15:18. > :15:20.

:15:20. > :15:24.have always wanted to do. It is phenomenal. Who could forget this?

:15:24. > :15:33.Sydney 2000, one of the greatest moments of with the greatest

:15:33. > :15:43.Olympic suburb. The rowing team in Sydney, when so Steve Redgrave

:15:43. > :15:45.

:15:45. > :15:49.competed. I did not look after them but I looked after them in training.

:15:49. > :15:55.She was closer than others and she will never forget. I have fabulous

:15:55. > :16:02.pictures of them coming off the water. It is the complete converse

:16:02. > :16:10.of every chink -- everyone watching them get medals. To see them coming

:16:10. > :16:20.off with their medals, that special moments when you have the picture

:16:20. > :16:22.

:16:22. > :16:32.no one else has. This year, she will work from the Olympic village.

:16:32. > :16:32.

:16:32. > :16:39.I can court with his York. I am all flushed.

:16:39. > :16:49.Life is going to borrow her teens. Newcastle and Sunderland are in the

:16:49. > :16:51.

:16:51. > :16:57.top eight. On Sunday, the Magpies and their new signing Papiss Cisse.

:16:57. > :17:02.Many have left it late but Sunderland have never looked back.

:17:02. > :17:12.The Green Nell Gwyn Bevan orach underlined how far the Black Cats

:17:12. > :17:16.

:17:16. > :17:25.have come. They got into tomorrow's game in eight police. We have done

:17:25. > :17:35.very well. There are a group of teams there which are separated by

:17:35. > :17:35.

:17:35. > :17:41.just a few points. That is the most important thing. We would be

:17:41. > :17:51.delighted but there is a distance to gawp. If the season ended now,

:17:51. > :17:54.

:17:54. > :17:57.Demba Ba and Papiss Cisse would find him in the Europa League. The

:17:57. > :18:06.boss has his feet on the ground. are not looking further than where

:18:06. > :18:14.we are. We are realistic enough to know that for us to break-up into

:18:14. > :18:23.the top four, it would be something extraordinary. There will be a

:18:23. > :18:29.tough decision whether to start with Demba Ba and Papiss Cisse.

:18:29. > :18:39.This will be held for all for everyone. Whether the start,

:18:39. > :18:43.whether they come off the bench. I am looking forward to it.

:18:43. > :18:53.Middlesbrough goal looking for their first league win of 2012

:18:53. > :18:59.

:18:59. > :19:06.against at Crystal Palace tomorrow. This called from Marvin Emnes.

:19:06. > :19:11.Carlisle hammered for nine from Hartlepool. The planned trip to

:19:12. > :19:17.Bari was called off this afternoon. It will not have escaped your

:19:17. > :19:27.notice but we have four survivors in the Cup. Two of them are from

:19:27. > :19:28.

:19:28. > :19:35.Sunderland. The Black Cats play next week in round five. Sunderland

:19:36. > :19:45.are in with the wild cats. On a very cold day, the warm glow

:19:46. > :19:47.

:19:47. > :19:53.all media attention for the women's football team. It is their reward

:19:53. > :20:02.for dispatching another name, Sheffield Wednesday. Everyone wants

:20:02. > :20:10.to win. We have the belief we could come this far. Other people might

:20:10. > :20:13.not have thought that. The belief within the squad is excellent. If

:20:13. > :20:23.we go out there and play our game, there is no reason why we cannot

:20:23. > :20:28.

:20:28. > :20:36.win. They warmed up for the tie-up -- Cup tie. They're proud coach has

:20:36. > :20:42.been trying to keep their feet on the ground. We're very proud. The

:20:42. > :20:50.secret of this team is hard work and they want to succeed. When the

:20:50. > :20:59.ball out, they will give 110 %. the Edinburgh again, will they be

:20:59. > :21:08.focused? It's the first 20 minutes of them go behind. They sorted it

:21:08. > :21:14.out to one former-1. Newcastle Falcons were given a

:21:14. > :21:20.major boost with news that Jimmy Gopperth has signed a three-year

:21:20. > :21:27.extension. He has had offers from many clubs and has decided to

:21:27. > :21:34.commit his future to the Balkans. Newcastle are we to Leicester at

:21:34. > :21:40.times tomorrow. And basketball, the leader's head to the Midlands to

:21:40. > :21:50.plague was to Wolves. Que may have won seven and a rope since

:21:50. > :21:52.

:21:52. > :21:59.Christmas. If you're hoping to take part in this year's Great North Run,

:21:59. > :22:08.hurry up. The ballot closes on Monday. I knew there would be a

:22:08. > :22:14.comment. We are more than a month into a 2012 and that means it is

:22:14. > :22:24.time to reveal the first picture and the calendar. Our January

:22:24. > :22:25.

:22:25. > :22:34.weather picture... He is a painter of Clyde Stakes and a member of the

:22:34. > :22:44.Cloud Appreciation Society. caught up with iron. I am Malcolm

:22:44. > :22:45.

:22:45. > :22:53.Wilson. We run a private architectural practice. I paint

:22:53. > :23:03.more than I used to. I have a wonderful life. Skies have always

:23:03. > :23:07.

:23:07. > :23:16.been a passion. Particularly clouds. This was quite atmospheric. It is

:23:16. > :23:26.where my grandparents came from. It is hard to pick a short list. I

:23:26. > :23:26.

:23:26. > :23:32.have got it down to three. They all had different characteristics. I

:23:32. > :23:39.picked three and all them were in Cumbria. This was a very

:23:40. > :23:49.traditional photograph. You had this lovely for groaned. It

:23:50. > :23:51.

:23:51. > :24:01.habitable range of covers -- colours. I picked this one. It had

:24:01. > :24:05.

:24:05. > :24:10.a lovely geometric shot. Everything was there. You can see the dawn. It

:24:10. > :24:18.was beautifully shot. After looking at all the photographs, it was

:24:18. > :24:28.difficult to pick a winner. But whether his this one. It captured

:24:28. > :24:28.

:24:28. > :24:37.geometry, drama, that while factor. It is a picture I would have picked
