:00:08. > :00:11.Welcome to Look North. Tonight: Every parent's nightmare. Two

:00:11. > :00:14.toddlers in hospital after a motorbike ploughs into their

:00:14. > :00:23.pushchair. Tonight, there is an uncertain

:00:23. > :00:30.future over community centres. Still waiting. Greece keeps

:00:30. > :00:36.Christopher Rochester's parents waiting after their son's body is

:00:36. > :00:42.exhumed. Newcastle want their name it

:00:42. > :00:52.reinstated at the ground. And the man going to his 5th

:00:52. > :00:55.

:00:55. > :01:00.18 month-old twins are in hospital tonight after a motorbike hit their

:01:00. > :01:06.bogey as they were being pushed across the road by their mum. One,

:01:06. > :01:12.a girl, is in will Victoria Infirmary. Her brother is in

:01:12. > :01:15.Sunderland hospital. The mother was also taken to hospital, as was the

:01:15. > :01:20.motorcyclist. None of those involved have been named by the

:01:20. > :01:25.police. It happened at dogs fed International Business Park in

:01:25. > :01:29.Sunderland. -- Doxford International Business Park.

:01:29. > :01:35.What happened isn't clear tonight but local people think this might

:01:35. > :01:41.have been the accident they say was waiting to happen. The speed limit

:01:41. > :01:48.here is 60 miles an hour. Far too high, they say. The road is

:01:48. > :01:52.extremely dangerous. You can wait ages just to get across the road. I

:01:52. > :01:56.wish they would do something about it because they seem to be speeding

:01:56. > :02:01.down there. If those who came across the scene said the little

:02:01. > :02:07.boy was responding to an paramedics but his twin sister seemed to be

:02:07. > :02:17.more seriously injured. The mother was in hysterics, obviously. I told

:02:17. > :02:22.her to keep calm. A woman was comforting her. It must have been

:02:22. > :02:27.awful for you to witness. It was horrible. I have a one year-old and

:02:27. > :02:32.it is sickening. Any accident you don't want to see but especially

:02:32. > :02:35.one that involves children. road was closed for three hours

:02:35. > :02:38.while investigators investigated the scene of a stop tonight, the

:02:39. > :02:48.police are asking for anyone who saw the accident to contact them

:02:49. > :02:49.

:02:49. > :02:53.Dozens of council community centres face an uncertain future this

:02:53. > :02:59.evening. Durham County Council says it can no longer afford to run and

:02:59. > :03:04.refurbish all of its 120 centres. Instead it was local people to take

:03:04. > :03:08.them over. The council will provide 2 million over two years to help

:03:08. > :03:18.36 centres but others will no wrong they receive council funding. Some

:03:18. > :03:21.

:03:21. > :03:29.communities feel that will force It is kick-boxing here at the

:03:29. > :03:36.community centre. Its history is it was a local school but then it

:03:36. > :03:40.became a community centre in 1968. It is estimated 100,000 of work is

:03:40. > :03:45.needed on the roof. In the past, they would have looked to the

:03:45. > :03:49.council -- County Council to help as it is a council building. They

:03:49. > :03:56.have said they were not invest any more money. They want to transfer

:03:56. > :03:59.the money to the local community. The council says it will provide

:03:59. > :04:07.support and a pot of money to help them take ownership of their own

:04:07. > :04:10.community centre. It isn't simply over to you. We have consulted on

:04:10. > :04:18.our approach. We have asked the opinion if they think it is the

:04:19. > :04:23.right way to go. People think it is the right way to go ahead. It is a

:04:23. > :04:33.fantastic opportunity to gain other resources because there are other

:04:33. > :04:36.

:04:36. > :04:40.Local people are heavily involved. One of the linchpins is Betty, from

:04:40. > :04:47.the community association. They say it is a great opportunity to run

:04:47. > :04:52.the centre. TUC it that way? Definitely not. It is hard work and

:04:52. > :04:55.lots of fund raising and we need be council's support. You fear this

:04:55. > :05:01.might be the end of the community centre if this happens. What will

:05:02. > :05:08.be lost if it closes? Everything. All these children, we have 30

:05:08. > :05:13.children in here tonight. We have 30 adults later on. We have 70 in

:05:13. > :05:18.the last night. The committee runs seven days a week and we are all

:05:18. > :05:23.volunteers running debts. We have a part-time caretaker and that is all

:05:23. > :05:31.we have. We raised every penny to keep the amenities going. There is

:05:31. > :05:33.nothing else left. As you can hear, there is big concerns here. Other

:05:33. > :05:39.community centres shed those concerns.

:05:39. > :05:43.A few committee centres will be affected. Will other councils watch

:05:43. > :05:48.what is happening here and do the same to save money?

:05:48. > :05:53.We are seeing this with lots of council services. Other councils

:05:53. > :05:58.will be watching this, particularly those services where the council

:05:58. > :06:01.are not legally obliged to fund these centres. The problem comes

:06:01. > :06:11.when the committee finds it isn't willing to and then facilities will

:06:11. > :06:12.

:06:12. > :06:19.have to close. The test they endured the agony of

:06:19. > :06:22.having their son's body exhumed for DNA testing. The body -- the family

:06:22. > :06:32.of Christopher Rochester say the results don't show what happened.

:06:32. > :06:34.

:06:34. > :06:39.His body was returned to the UK with a kidney missing. His body

:06:39. > :06:45.returned from roads. It was meant to provide answers.

:06:45. > :06:52.Eight months on, what have they learnt? If nothing. We are no

:06:52. > :07:00.further forward now than we were when his body was exhumed. When we

:07:00. > :07:05.heard a the results had been successful, we thought it was fine.

:07:05. > :07:13.We should hear any day and we can move forward. But that is not the

:07:13. > :07:18.case. As it has been for 12 years, we have to have days like today.

:07:18. > :07:22.Chris Rochester died after falling from a balcony in roads in 2000 but

:07:22. > :07:28.his body was returned missing a kidney. The family allege an organ

:07:28. > :07:32.later sent back wasn't his. This isn't just about whether the wrong

:07:32. > :07:37.kidney was sent back. It is about why was their kidney removed in the

:07:37. > :07:43.first place because the family say he slowly bled to death in that

:07:43. > :07:47.Greek hospital. Could it be the kidney contains vital evidence

:07:47. > :07:55.about his death and could it be that is the reason the kidney was

:07:55. > :08:00.removed? The truth is we don't know. What do the family want? First, to

:08:00. > :08:05.get the DNA results to prove the kidney wasn't his. If they do that,

:08:05. > :08:09.fresh court action in Greece to answer their questions. Why was the

:08:09. > :08:17.kidney taken? The family think the Greeks are now sitting on the DNA

:08:17. > :08:22.tests. The family are all now receiving counselling for what

:08:22. > :08:32.happened eight months ago. We want our day in court and we want

:08:32. > :08:37.

:08:37. > :08:41.Fears are growing for the jobs of 1000 financial service workers in

:08:41. > :08:45.York after shares in the card protection company, CPP, were

:08:45. > :08:49.suspended on make London Stock Exchange. It is currently the

:08:49. > :08:53.subject of a mis-selling investigation by the Financial

:08:53. > :08:58.Services Authority. It has being -- it is being asked to look at his

:08:58. > :09:01.past business and pay compensation. Cumbria's Director of Public Health

:09:01. > :09:04.has been called before his bosses after speaking out against the

:09:04. > :09:09.Government's health reforms. Jon Ashton was a signatory to a letter

:09:09. > :09:13.published in the Independent newspaper which criticised the

:09:13. > :09:16.coalition's proposed Health Bill. A John Ashton is well known as a

:09:16. > :09:20.leading figure in the NHS in the north-west. He has spoken out

:09:20. > :09:23.before against Government health reforms. Last year he was one of

:09:23. > :09:27.around 400 people who signed a letter calling on the House of

:09:27. > :09:32.Lords to throw out Health Bill. As we keep co-signed a similar protest

:09:32. > :09:36.letter, this time to the Independent newspaper. It is now

:09:36. > :09:43.understood he has received a letter of his own calling him to a meeting

:09:43. > :09:48.with NHS Cumbria's Chief Executive and Andrew Lansley given a half --

:09:48. > :09:53.tough ride, the protest was raised in the Commons. Will the Secretary

:09:53. > :09:57.of State confirm it is now his policy to threaten NHS staff with

:09:57. > :10:01.disciplinary action if they speak out against his reorganisation?

:10:01. > :10:11.isn't my policy. If he had shown me the letter, I could have

:10:11. > :10:17.

:10:17. > :10:24.A spokesman for the Department of Health said they had not seen the

:10:24. > :10:28.letter but clearly PCT's should not be employing heavy-handed tactics.

:10:28. > :10:32.It won't go away. The row over the renaming of St James' Park has now

:10:32. > :10:37.reached Parliament. A dozen MPs have signed an Early Day motion

:10:37. > :10:44.calling on Mike Ashley, the owner, to reinstate the name. Gateshead MP,

:10:44. > :10:48.Ian Mearns has been leading the campaign and I asked him why Mr

:10:48. > :10:52.Ashley should listen to them. an expression of frustration from

:10:52. > :10:58.local Members of Parliament because Mike Ashley hasn't listened to the

:10:58. > :11:05.fans. The fans aren't like the consumers of any ordinary

:11:05. > :11:09.entertainment. Last week, when we saw the pictures on TV of the name,

:11:09. > :11:13.St James' Park being Croad barred from the wall of the ground, that

:11:13. > :11:18.seemed to be over the top. Mike Ashley can call the ground whatever

:11:18. > :11:25.he wants but removing that history in the way he has, seems to be a

:11:25. > :11:29.little bit gratuitous. He would say, I have invested millions, I want to

:11:30. > :11:35.generate income back. He doesn't own the ground, he owns the

:11:35. > :11:41.buildings on which the ground stands. The land on which the grand

:11:41. > :11:46.-- ground stands belonged to the Freemen of the city. Day rent him

:11:46. > :11:51.the ground on a long lease. He doesn't technically owned

:11:51. > :11:55.everything to do with the stadium. He owns the buildings where the

:11:55. > :12:01.stadium stands. He is forgetting that piece of history as well.

:12:01. > :12:05.is doing what other clubs are going up around the country. The vast

:12:05. > :12:13.majority of cases, those sponsoring deals are on new stadia which have

:12:13. > :12:17.been built separately. There is a good president, where as Surrey

:12:17. > :12:21.Cricket Club play at the Brit Oval but it is still the Oval. As far as

:12:22. > :12:25.the fans are concerned, they will always be St James' Park and I

:12:25. > :12:32.can't imagine anybody that Aynho would be telling me on Saturday

:12:32. > :12:36.that they are going to the Sports Direct arena to watch the Newcastle

:12:36. > :12:41.play Wolverhampton Rovers. It will always beat St James' Park.

:12:41. > :12:47.would love to hear from Mike Ashley. If he ignores you, there's nothing

:12:48. > :12:54.else you can do, is there? Gentle persuasion is needed. Mike, you

:12:54. > :12:58.have done an awful lot of good for the club. He has got them into a

:12:58. > :13:03.healthy position but they are so many gaffes which have taken place

:13:03. > :13:09.and it has upset the fans. Why don't they talk to local people

:13:09. > :13:13.before they decide to do things? He has a lot to learn about the public

:13:13. > :13:18.relations business and the people he is dealing with in terms of the

:13:18. > :13:22.Newcastle United fans. We will not be dragged back to the

:13:22. > :13:26.bad old days. That was the promise from David Cameron today at a

:13:26. > :13:29.summit aimed at tackling racist abuse in football. The meeting was

:13:29. > :13:35.attended by former players and football bosses and the tough

:13:35. > :13:41.talking has been welcomed by campaigners in our region.

:13:41. > :13:46.Today the Prime Minister promised to tackle for poor's racist. That

:13:46. > :13:54.is dreadful, don't wait they are shouting at whenever Shaun Wright

:13:54. > :13:59.Phillips gets near the ball. It is happening at every level. We had a

:13:59. > :14:05.corner so I packed into the goalkeeper and he went like this. I

:14:05. > :14:08.thought, why did that come from? Trevor Benjamin is a former

:14:08. > :14:12.professional footballer who was abused while playing in the

:14:12. > :14:19.Northern League with Morpeth Town. You feel hurt, angry, everything

:14:19. > :14:24.all at once coming to you. After the game, you sit back and really

:14:24. > :14:27.think about it and it is even worse than on the pitch. Trevor was

:14:28. > :14:32.joined by other former professionals this afternoon at any

:14:32. > :14:40.event organised by the campaign group, show racism the red card.

:14:40. > :14:49.am not sure if it is getting better or worse. People are ready to

:14:49. > :14:55.report things now. Maybe a couple of years ago, they were not. Black

:14:55. > :15:00.people, Muslims, travellers, they have had enough of it. I black

:15:00. > :15:04.players know longer have bananas thrown at them but campaigners say

:15:04. > :15:11.the battle against prejudice on the pitch will continue as long as

:15:11. > :15:14.Coming up next, a young band with stars in their eyes. And talking of

:15:14. > :15:22.eyes, find out why the stars have been donating their spectacles to a

:15:22. > :15:26.charity exhibition. And with flood alerts in part of

:15:26. > :15:30.the region, I will be a full weather forecast at the end of the

:15:30. > :15:33.news. A band made up of young teenagers

:15:33. > :15:38.from Carlisle has been given the opportunity of a lifetime, to play

:15:38. > :15:41.in front of 4,000 people as the support act for McFly. The Alleys

:15:41. > :15:44.are all aged between 14 and 16 and they'll be playing original

:15:44. > :15:54.material at The Clyde Auditorium in Glasgow on the 13th of April.

:15:54. > :15:59.Alison Freeman went to meet them. Rehearsing in Aspatria is a far cry

:15:59. > :16:03.from playing in front of thousands of people. But in two months, The

:16:03. > :16:06.Alleys will be taking to the stage at the Clyde Auditorium in Glasgow.

:16:06. > :16:16.They beat thousands of other hopefuls in contest held by pop

:16:16. > :16:18.

:16:18. > :16:22.band McFly to find support acts. was absolutely chuffed. It seems

:16:22. > :16:29.like a lot of work has paid off over the past couple of years. We

:16:29. > :16:35.have been gradually getting bigger. It is really cool. They were one of

:16:35. > :16:38.my favourite bands when I was a kid. The teenagers, who all come from

:16:38. > :16:43.the Carlisle area, sent in material showing them gigging as part of

:16:43. > :16:46.Radio One's introducing before the Big Weekend. Fans votes helped them

:16:46. > :16:56.make the shortlist of just 50. Then McFly themselves handpicked them

:16:56. > :17:06.for the Glasgow gig on the 13th of April. What are you hoping will

:17:06. > :17:07.

:17:07. > :17:10.come off the back of this? Lots of girls! I would love to be able to

:17:10. > :17:14.play in a band and see lots of new places all over the world. That

:17:14. > :17:24.would be good. It is more the travelling than the being famous

:17:24. > :17:25.

:17:25. > :17:30.thing. I think it will be great. If we are still having fun in 10 years,

:17:30. > :17:33.I guess. The lads may only be aged 14 to 16, but they're thinking big

:17:33. > :17:43.and they already have almost 30 songs and plan to release and album

:17:43. > :17:46.by April. When Emma Newton was killed by a

:17:46. > :17:50.falling tree last year, the shock spread way beyond the Tyne Valley

:17:50. > :17:52.where she lived. But her family and friends have turned her life into a

:17:52. > :17:55.celebration, and a charitable fundraiser. Tomorrow, an exhibition

:17:55. > :18:05.opens at the Queen's Hall in Hexham, featuring a collection of famous

:18:05. > :18:06.

:18:06. > :18:09.spectacles. Why? Well, Paul Mooney's been for a preview.

:18:09. > :18:16.Emma was passionate about the performing arts. After the tragic

:18:16. > :18:20.sudden death, her family and friends set up the M Newton Fund to

:18:20. > :18:26.ensure her legacy could bring benefit to Southwark -- other

:18:26. > :18:35.performers. But why spectacles? idea came from my wife and I

:18:35. > :18:44.thinking, what can we do to help the fund. She used to wear these

:18:45. > :18:50.wonderful classes. We thought, let's do something with spectacles.

:18:50. > :19:00.The stars of the show are Kylie Minogue's spectacles. She has

:19:00. > :19:06.centres the ones she warned -- warned the front of a magazine.

:19:06. > :19:11.Losing Emma has shattered our lives. Every day, we miss her. Events like

:19:11. > :19:16.this have helped us, the support we have had over the months, it has

:19:16. > :19:21.been fantastic. They are talking about a broken society but not in

:19:21. > :19:26.this region. The money raised should benefit other young people.

:19:26. > :19:29.She started showing an interest in various things and we struggled. It

:19:29. > :19:34.was different events, backwards and forwards in the car, it was a

:19:34. > :19:40.struggle. There is money available. Just to know that the fund-raising

:19:40. > :19:50.which is happening may help children out there, that is a great

:19:50. > :19:50.

:19:50. > :19:58.fund -- comfort. The exhibition runs until the 17th March.

:19:58. > :20:01.'s Time now for the sport. It was an important result for

:20:01. > :20:04.Middlesbrough last night. Two goals from Dutch striker Marvin Emnes,

:20:04. > :20:07.his 13th and 14th of the season, helped Middlesbrough to a 3-1

:20:08. > :20:10.victory at Millwall last night. The result takes Boro back into the

:20:10. > :20:14.Championship top six and re-ignites hopes of at least a promotion play-

:20:14. > :20:17.off place. Mark Tulip reports. With the current form of West Ham

:20:17. > :20:19.and Birmingham, Boro boss Tony Mowbray may well be viewing the

:20:19. > :20:22.play-offs as his side's most realistic chance of getting

:20:22. > :20:25.promotion back to the Premier League. Certainly it was a good

:20:25. > :20:28.time to play Millwall, who've been finding goals hard to come by,

:20:28. > :20:31.although Boro missed a host of early chances, before Marvin Emnes

:20:31. > :20:35.atoned for his earlier howler by deflecting in Rhys Williams's shot.

:20:35. > :20:38.There was nothing scrappy about the Teessiders second. Emnes with a

:20:39. > :20:41.fine finish. And, although Darius Henderson's looped header gave the

:20:41. > :20:43.home side hope, Boro withstood a strong second half fight-back

:20:43. > :20:50.before teenage ex Darlington striker Curtis Main powered home

:20:50. > :21:00.his first Boro goal. The excellent Jason Steele helped ensure back to

:21:00. > :21:00.

:21:00. > :21:06.back wins. Very timely indeed. Mark Tulip, BBC Look North.

:21:06. > :21:10.There is a top-of-the-table clash in the Conference this evening.

:21:10. > :21:18.Gateshead are in danger of falling away. But the other end of the

:21:18. > :21:22.table, Darlington remain above the relegation zone.

:21:22. > :21:24.Harrogate's Jack Laugher is hoping for a medal in the Diving World Cup

:21:25. > :21:27.tonight at London's new Olympic Aquatic Centre. He's competing in

:21:27. > :21:30.the final of the men's three metre individual springboard competition

:21:30. > :21:32.after setting a personal best to finish sixth in the semis.

:21:32. > :21:35.Paralympian Stephen Miller was at the North East Disability Sports

:21:35. > :21:42.Awards this afternoon to present one of four awards to outstanding

:21:42. > :21:46.young disabled athletes. It will be nice to put a better performance on

:21:46. > :21:53.in the final. It was not as good as I could have done. There is room

:21:53. > :21:58.for improvement. This is just preparation for the Olympics.

:21:58. > :22:01.luck to him. Stephen Miller was at the north-east disability sports

:22:02. > :22:06.award this afternoon to present one of four or wards two outstanding

:22:06. > :22:08.young disabled athletes. Adrian Pitches reports. In the year of the

:22:08. > :22:15.Olympics and the Paralympics, these North East Disability Awards have a

:22:15. > :22:23.special significance. The great thing about it is bringing people

:22:23. > :22:30.together. A lot is being done in the region. It does not get

:22:30. > :22:38.broadcast. Great work is being done. Stephen was guest of honour and

:22:38. > :22:46.presented the Male Personality of the Year award. I used to run a lot

:22:46. > :22:55.before my illness. That became a lot more difficult. It is about
