:08:13. > :08:17.I thought this legislation would privatise the NHS or tear it apart,

:08:28. > :08:37.Of course, being in government does not mean that they will face

:11:03. > :11:06.government for the North? Well you might be forgiven for thinking
:11:06. > :11:08.we've been here before. Remember this white elephant? The idea of a
:11:08. > :11:12.North East regional assembly was rejected during a referendum eight
:11:12. > :11:16.years ago. But now a campaign group - the Hannah Mitchell Foundation -
:11:16. > :11:19.wants to revive the debate. It thinks the whole North should have
:11:19. > :11:23.a regional government - and launched its proposals today. BBC
:11:23. > :11:27.Newcastle's political reporter Fergus Hewison has more.
:11:27. > :11:37.No - 696,519 and that the region has voted no to an elected assembly
:11:37. > :11:38.
:11:38. > :11:48.for the north east. That was 2004 - a resounding NO to regional
:11:48. > :11:51.
:11:51. > :11:55.government. But this is now - and new calls for a voice for the north.
:11:55. > :11:58.We think we need to move on from the last referendum and learn
:11:58. > :12:01.lessons from that. But a lot of people in the foundation of
:12:01. > :12:05.thinking we need to go for an all northern approach that brings in
:12:05. > :12:11.the North East with Yorkshire and also the north-west. If you look at
:12:11. > :12:15.the North East, it is a relatively small region on its own. It has got
:12:15. > :12:18.strong links with the North West, particularly with Cumbria and
:12:18. > :12:24.pretty poor transport links. But do people feel it's time to revisit
:12:24. > :12:28.the idea of regional government? More power at this end of the
:12:28. > :12:33.country would be a good idea. It would let us have a say. We tried
:12:33. > :12:38.it once and they turned it down. I do not honestly think it will work
:12:38. > :12:42.any better around this time. Certainly, not independent, but
:12:42. > :12:45.some sort of devolution would make sense, there is an imbalance of
:12:46. > :12:49.finance and other things, so we need more of a voice. So some
:12:49. > :12:51.enthusiasm. But the man who led the NO campaign against the regional
:12:51. > :12:54.assembly doesn't believe there's any appetite. The public has
:12:54. > :12:57.already decisively rejected this at a major referendum - 78% voted
:12:57. > :13:03.against this solution because this is a politicians' solution to
:13:03. > :13:07.problems politicians gave us and it will involve more politicians.
:13:07. > :13:10.campaign for a regional government is in its early stages. Supporters
:13:10. > :13:16.say they have an open mind about what form any new body would take.
:13:16. > :13:20.Critics argue it's an idea well past its sell by date.
:13:20. > :13:24.And there's more on that story on this weekend's Sunday Politics.
:13:24. > :13:28.That's earlier than usual at 11:00 on BBC One.
:13:28. > :13:32.Well there's plenty more to come in tonight's programme. Mark's here
:13:32. > :13:35.with the sport. In football - it's a big weekend for one of our non-

:13:45. > :13:50.And we have the weather forecast coming up with fine weather to look

:13:53. > :13:57.Montgomery have been at the official opening of a hostel for
:13:57. > :14:01.homeless young people today. The hostel and training centre in

:14:04. > :14:10.home to eighteen young people between the age of 16 and twenty
:14:10. > :14:14.five. Lyttanya Shannon reports. He's the winner of two talent shows,
:14:14. > :14:17.most famously the X-factor. But today Joe McElderry was away from
:14:17. > :14:25.the bright lights - instead he was spending time with young people not
:14:26. > :14:29.far from his own age, but with experiences a world apart. I have
:14:29. > :14:34.been fortunate with the experiences I have had and the child that I

:14:37. > :14:41.like this where there are sessions where you can talk about things and
:14:41. > :14:44.you can get help to stay here, it is like a family foundation that

:14:46. > :14:54.Former Sunderland player Jim Montgommery was also there to show

:14:59. > :15:03.They have got lovely places and they have always somewhere to come

:15:18. > :15:23.Young people like Nathan - who after receiving training and advice
:15:23. > :15:28.as well as a bed - will be moving into his own flat on Monday.
:15:28. > :15:32.makes a big difference, really, because most people have to find
:15:32. > :15:35.work and to get off the dole, they want to make something of their
:15:35. > :15:38.life. Definitely. But there have been some concerns from local
:15:38. > :15:43.residents that the new centre could attract trouble-makers. But the
:15:43. > :15:47.managers here though say the building is rigorously managed.
:15:47. > :15:49.These young people are Sunderland young people and through no fault
:15:50. > :15:54.of their own, they are facing homelessness and we are here to
:15:54. > :15:58.help them and to support that. Let's work together to eradicate
:15:58. > :16:01.this handful issue. It's hoped this new facility will go some way to

:16:13. > :16:16.carvings that appeared in a woodland beauty spot in North
:16:16. > :16:19.Yorkshire. The highly detailed wooden sculptures along the banks
:16:19. > :16:24.of the River Nidd at Knaresborough have proved such an attraction that
:16:24. > :16:28.people are travelling from far and wide to see them. And now their
:16:28. > :16:34.creator has come forward. He's Tommy Craggs, a chainsaw sculptor

:16:37. > :16:40.A stroll along Abbey Road in the Nidd Gorge has always been popular

:16:57. > :16:59.a man from Consett and his power tools. You have to try and
:16:59. > :17:04.visualise the three-dimensional form. Sometimes it can take days
:17:04. > :17:07.and weeks, just thinking about it in the night-time, trying to plan
:17:07. > :17:11.these cuts he will make. These extraordinary sculptures are the
:17:11. > :17:16.work of Tommy Craggs whose mission it is to turn old tree trunks into
:17:16. > :17:24.works of art. The wing shape was there with the two stems spanning

:17:30. > :17:34.The grain of the wood goes up a long go back. This takes a bit of

:19:15. > :19:18.pack to good effect against the Carling Cup holders. But was he
:19:18. > :19:22.taken aback after his captain Lee Cattermole saw red after the final
:19:22. > :19:27.whistle last Sunday? It was really disappointing to come into the
:19:27. > :19:32.dressing room and find out that not only was he sitting there
:19:32. > :19:37.dejectedly, but there was another one to contend with after that, and
:19:37. > :19:41.I suppose, if we had hung around for another few hours, we could
:19:41. > :19:45.have lost another five! But anyway, in the cold light of day, obviously,
:19:45. > :19:50.you have to count the cost. As for the two managers in last weekend's
:19:50. > :19:55.bad tempered derby draw - will they be making up any time soon? If I
:19:55. > :20:00.don't know. By ensure, as time presses on, things get forgotten
:20:00. > :20:03.about. -- I'm sure. Newcastle United have to wait until
:20:03. > :20:06.Monday to continue their push for European football. The Magpies face
:20:06. > :20:13.a resurgent Arsenal at The Emirates but while a Europa League place
:20:13. > :20:16.remains in sight. United legend Alan Shearer thinks Alan Pardew's
:20:16. > :20:19.men will probably miss out on the Champions League. A win would put
:20:19. > :20:22.them within two points of the Gunners, but Shearer believes a top
:20:22. > :20:26.four finish may be just beyond them. I wouldn't discounted, but it
:20:26. > :20:31.probably well be. It would be a shame if they don't, because they
:20:31. > :20:36.have had such a magnificent season. It would be great if they could end
:20:36. > :20:41.on at high. He is up against it straight away. He has got on with
:20:41. > :20:44.his business quietly and he has done an exceptional job and demands
:20:44. > :20:46.exceptional credit. It's not quite a derby, but
:20:46. > :20:50.Middlesbrough face their near neighbours on Sunday when Neil
:20:50. > :20:53.Warnock's Leeds United visit the Riverside. The visitors still have
:20:53. > :20:55.an outside chance of making the play-offs but fell to an unlucky
:20:55. > :21:01.defeat last week against table- toppers Southampton. Boro boss Tony
:21:01. > :21:05.Mowbray says its a game to relish. I think in football, managers want
:21:05. > :21:12.to be involved in big games, high energy games with a lot at stake.
:21:12. > :21:16.And this game falls into that category. By ensure they will be
:21:16. > :21:26.wound up to come and have a real go. -- I am sure. We have to be ready
:21:26. > :21:27.
:21:27. > :21:30.for them. In League One, Carlisle United -
:21:31. > :21:33.whose players we saw earlier in the programme - are at home to Bury -
:21:34. > :21:36.with Hartlepool at Walsall. Now tomorrow's going to be a big day
:21:36. > :21:39.for non-league York City. Already chasing promotion back to the
:21:39. > :21:41.Football League, the Minstermen take on Luton in the first leg of
:21:41. > :21:44.the FA Trophy semi-final. Half an eye was on the weekend
:21:44. > :21:47.ahead and another shot at an FA Trophy final at Wembley. We have
:21:47. > :21:50.been there once and we want to go back again and when this time and
:21:50. > :21:54.bring it back with us. We have had our days out at Wembley in previous
:21:54. > :21:58.seasons and they were a disappointment, but the big thing
:21:58. > :22:03.for everyone is getting back into the leak. It York have competing
:22:03. > :22:09.priorities, but for the man in charge of their responsibilities,
:22:09. > :22:12.the trophy is a lifeline. It is probably worth 200,000 for as when
:22:12. > :22:18.you look at the prize money and the gate receipts leading up to the
:22:18. > :22:23.final. It is quite significant at our level. I want to lead my team
:22:23. > :22:27.out at Wembley and on the day, it is about a bit of luck, but wanting
:22:27. > :22:30.it more than them. It should be a great day on Saturday and I am
:22:30. > :22:33.looking forward to it. Good luck to Chester-le-Street
:22:33. > :22:39.swimmer Steph Proud who is in with a shout of Olympic qualification
:22:39. > :22:42.tonight. She has missed out on Olympic qualification despite
:22:42. > :22:47.coming second in the backstroke final at the British Championships
:22:47. > :22:50.in London. Her semi-final performance put her just a fraction
:22:50. > :22:52.short of the time needed to guarantee selection for the Games.
:22:52. > :22:54.Meanwhile, Sunderland's Jonathan Carlisle came seventh in last
:22:54. > :22:56.night's men's final, while former City of Newcastle swimmer Andy
:22:56. > :23:01.Mayor made it through to the butterfly final.
:23:01. > :23:04.And congratulations to Lyndon Longhorne, from County Durham. He
:23:04. > :23:06.swam to victory in the 150m Individual Medley in the multi-
:23:06. > :23:11.disability events, touching in a British record of just over three
:23:11. > :23:14.minutes. Finally good luck to our rugby
:23:14. > :23:17.league clubs at the start of a new league season. York are on their
:23:17. > :23:20.travels in the Championship on Sunday - and in the division below
:23:20. > :23:23.them, Whitehaven are in South Yorkshire, while Gateshead and
:23:23. > :23:25.Workington both kick off with home matches.
:23:25. > :23:28.In basketball, BBL leaders Newcastle Eagles hope to bounce
:23:28. > :23:38.back from a rare defeat with victories at home to Leicester
:23:38. > :23:38.
:23:38. > :23:43.tonight and away to neighbours Durham Wildcats 24 hours later.
:23:43. > :23:48.Thank you. In South Shields, and a building has collapsed in a busy
:23:48. > :23:51.part of the South centre and police were called to the bar at 5:30pm
:23:51. > :23:56.following reports that aid renovated building had collapsed.
:23:56. > :24:02.Let's go to work Chief Reporter there are now.
:24:02. > :24:06.The building came down, as you said, at about 5:30pm. Fire officers that
:24:06. > :24:10.arrived here were dreading the worst, but when they arrived, they
:24:10. > :24:14.established that nobody had been in front of the building and nobody
:24:14. > :24:19.was inside. They have spoken to the builders and it was under
:24:19. > :24:23.renovation, but thankfully, there was nobody inside. There is an
:24:23. > :24:27.awful lot of damage. The road has been closed off. People are waiting
:24:28. > :24:32.to see what has developed. Fire officers have been shouting into
:24:32. > :24:41.the rubble since we have been here. We do not know how long this road
:24:41. > :24:47.will be closed, but if you know Ocean Road, it happened at 5:30pm.
:24:47. > :24:56.Now, the weather. Can be expected some spring sunshine? It has been
:24:56. > :25:02.It will continue with mixed fortunes, but I think it would be
:25:02. > :25:07.quite fine and settled. A lovely settled shot here from all the
:25:07. > :25:12.water. Getting us in no mood for Rachel Baird weekend. If you get
:25:12. > :25:22.the opportunity, the daffodils are allowed to with this spectacular
:25:22. > :25:27.display. Let's have a look at the headline in more detail, it would
:25:27. > :25:33.be very mild in the region this weekend. Mostly dry and in the east,
:25:33. > :25:37.some good, sunny spells to take you through Saturday and Sunday. This
:25:37. > :25:43.evening, a lot of cloud around which will stay with us overnight,
:25:43. > :25:48.but the drizzly rain will finally move off by dawn tomorrow morning.
:25:48. > :25:54.With cloud in place, temperatures not dipping took far. Seven-nine
:25:54. > :25:59.degrees. Tomorrow morning, there will be a bit of drizzle around
:25:59. > :26:03.Cumbria first thing, but it will not be long before it disappears.
:26:03. > :26:09.More cloudy on the western side, but it should stay dry through the
:26:09. > :26:12.remainder of the day. As the cloud comes up and over the Pennines, it
:26:12. > :26:18.should break up so the best a brightness and sunshine will be at
:26:18. > :26:26.the North East coast. High a temperatures in the east of 14, 15
:26:26. > :26:30.degrees Celsius tomorrow. Above- average. 10-12 for Cumbria. Mild
:26:30. > :26:37.everywhere. Settled for the weekend, because of this high pressure in
:26:37. > :26:42.charge. Again, most of us will be dried this weekend, but then East,
:26:42. > :26:47.West spit in terms of sunshine and cloud on Sunday. Over the weekend,
:26:47. > :26:51.a quick reminder, the best of the sunshine right across the East and
:26:51. > :26:57.Sunday afternoon for the North East coast, it looks particularly bright.
:26:57. > :27:03.Temperatures, doing well, staying above double figures everywhere.
:27:03. > :27:05.Peking in the mid-teens. If you're out and about this weekend, the
:27:05. > :27:10.sunshine it will be in the North East coast but you should not have
:27:10. > :27:20.to wrap up to warm our data umbrellas. If you are out and about,
:27:20. > :27:27.
:27:27. > :27:31.send us your weather pictures. Thank you. What every you're doing,
