:00:02. > :00:05.Welcome to Monday's Look North. In tonight's headlines - saved from

:00:05. > :00:14.the sand - a warning from rescuers, after a two-hour operation to help

:00:14. > :00:19.a man, trapped after digging on the beach.

:00:19. > :00:21.He was very frightened but he remained calm throughout. We had 45

:00:22. > :00:24.people here digging away. Campaigners battling to save

:00:24. > :00:28.Darlington Football Club turn down thousands of pounds from a mystery

:00:28. > :00:31.investor. We'll have the latest. And how a company in Dover could

:00:31. > :00:35.throw a lifeline to this once- famous floating nightclub.

:00:35. > :00:45.Turned out nice today. Some extra sunshine for this couple - with a

:00:45. > :00:47.

:00:47. > :00:51.seven figure Lotto win. We can buy my house and not have to worry

:00:51. > :00:54.about leaving the central heating In sport some champagne football

:00:54. > :00:58.from our clubs at the weekend but for the real bubbly look to

:00:58. > :01:08.basketball's Eagles - flying high and still on track for a domestic

:01:08. > :01:17.

:01:17. > :01:23.The emergency services have today issued a new warning about the

:01:23. > :01:29.dangers of digging on beaches after a man became trapped in a sand dune

:01:29. > :01:33.on a Northumberland beach. It happened on Druridge Bay. 40

:01:33. > :01:40.rescuers spent two hours digging him out. He was buried up to his

:01:40. > :01:47.neck and at one point, he had to be given oxygen.

:01:47. > :01:54.On such a beautiful evening, it is hard to believe that this was the

:01:54. > :01:58.scene of such frantic activity at about this time last night. This is

:01:58. > :02:02.where the tragedy started to unfold. It seems incredible when you hear

:02:02. > :02:08.about how many people were involved and how long they talk to get him

:02:08. > :02:12.out, that he wasn't more seriously injured. In a split-second, the

:02:12. > :02:16.fund in the sunshine turned to a desperate battle to save a man's

:02:16. > :02:22.life. The tons of sand which collapsed on to him had pinned him

:02:22. > :02:25.up to his neck. Rescuers say only his head was visible and the

:02:25. > :02:29.enormous weight of sound packed around his body meant he could

:02:29. > :02:35.hardly breathe. Paramedics had to give him oxygen throughout his

:02:36. > :02:40.ordeal. For the first few seconds, they probably laughed and then

:02:40. > :02:44.realised they were stuck and in a dangerous situation. Fortunately,

:02:44. > :02:50.they called 999 early and we were able to get here soon after they

:02:50. > :02:55.called. The growing army of rescuers frantically dug at this

:02:55. > :03:05.sand around him but as fast as they kept digging it out, more kept

:03:05. > :03:05.

:03:05. > :03:12.tonnes before we could get to the sand around him. Two people have

:03:12. > :03:20.been digging a hole, we don't know why. It is a constant worry for us

:03:21. > :03:24.because the nature of sand is it is unstable. If we York, if I did a

:03:24. > :03:31.little hole here, see how that sound runs down. It will keep on

:03:31. > :03:36.running. Eventually, they managed to haul him free and the ambulance

:03:36. > :03:40.took him to hospital where he was found to be none the worse for his

:03:40. > :03:44.ordeal. Craig Curran wasn't so lucky. He died on a beach in Wales

:03:44. > :03:52.five years ago when the sand tunnel he did with his family collapsed on

:03:52. > :04:00.top of him. Some have made light of what has happened here but it

:04:00. > :04:05.really was a potentially a very John Whitehall. It wasn't a joke,

:04:06. > :04:11.was it? It certainly wasn't a joke. It could have been a lot worse than

:04:11. > :04:21.it was if it hadn't have been for the dedication and professionalism.

:04:21. > :04:21.

:04:21. > :04:25.up to his neck and his lips had gone blue, yes? He was in a

:04:25. > :04:30.crouched position and the sound was up to his armpits, his shoulders.

:04:30. > :04:37.The paramedics were concerned about his breathing and he was starting

:04:37. > :04:43.to turn blue. They were very concerned and it got oxygen to him.

:04:43. > :04:51.It was potentially very dangerous. I can imagine it being quite

:04:51. > :04:57.frantic. It wasn't, it was very professionally done. Everybody

:04:57. > :05:03.worked very well together. The fire brigade, the Coast Guard, the

:05:03. > :05:09.ambience, the police. There wasn't any panic at all. -- the ambulance.

:05:09. > :05:19.Everybody did what they were asked to do. You can see the guy was

:05:19. > :05:26.

:05:26. > :05:29.physically frightened that he Five people from Northumberland

:05:29. > :05:33.including a 14 year-old boy had been charged with possessing

:05:33. > :05:38.firearms without certificates. It comes after armed officers stopped

:05:38. > :05:42.a car on the A189 near the debt dead -- near the North Sea to the

:05:42. > :05:47.area of Ashington on Saturday. A man and a woman were detained.

:05:47. > :05:55.Further arrests were made in North Seaton and Newbiggin where never

:05:55. > :06:02.firearm and ammunition were found. The court case against Sunderland

:06:02. > :06:06.footballer need -- Lee Cattermole has been adjourned again. He

:06:06. > :06:11.appeared before Newcastle magistrates two weeks ago but was

:06:11. > :06:16.in court today. His case has been adjourned until 16th April.

:06:16. > :06:21.It is that what would you do moment. When someone wins the lottery and

:06:21. > :06:29.you think, wouldn't it be nice? That is what happened to a retired

:06:29. > :06:34.couple from South Shields. -- Railston and file at Watkins are

:06:34. > :06:38.celebrating a windfall of 1.2 million. -- Violet.

:06:38. > :06:43.It is the traditional way to celebrate success. The champagne

:06:43. > :06:49.lifestyle we would all love but few can contemplate. Railston and

:06:49. > :06:57.Violet Watkins can now if they want. They won 1.2 million on the

:06:57. > :07:05.lottery last Wednesday. You are stunned and you check and check.

:07:05. > :07:09.You realise you have got them. She said she had to phone everybody.

:07:09. > :07:12.Happily married for 45 years, they plan to shed their winnings with

:07:12. > :07:18.their four children and grand children. The first thing they

:07:18. > :07:26.bought was a new lawn mower as their old one broke the day of the

:07:26. > :07:29.winner. What is it like to be rich? It hasn't sunk in. It is a relief

:07:29. > :07:39.that you are not going to be wanting for anything for the rest

:07:39. > :07:42.

:07:42. > :07:50.of your life. I can afford things now. I can play guitar now. I have

:07:50. > :08:00.Railston retired as a plumber or 80 years ago due to ill-health

:08:00. > :08:22.

:08:22. > :08:24.following a heart bypass operation. of pounds from a mystery investor.

:08:24. > :08:34.The Quakers are trying to raise three-quarters of a million pounds

:08:34. > :08:37.

:08:37. > :08:47.but have only brought in 300,000. life for us now. It seems an

:08:47. > :08:47.

:08:47. > :10:16.Apology for the loss of subtitles for 88 seconds

:10:16. > :10:19.extraordinary decision. Do there is plenty more to come

:10:19. > :10:23.into night's Look North. Don will join me more for tonight's

:10:23. > :10:28.sport in Team Talk. A Yorkshire's heritage will be celebrated in a

:10:28. > :10:31.new tourist attraction. And after a day of blue sky and unbroken

:10:31. > :10:41.sunshine across the region, join me for the forecast to find out if it

:10:41. > :10:42.

:10:42. > :10:47.How many of you remember dancing the night away on board this? The

:10:47. > :10:55.tuxedo Royale and the Tuxedo Princess were iconic on Tyneside

:10:55. > :11:01.and Teesside in the 19 eighties and nineties. Now only the tuxedo real

:11:01. > :11:06.-- Tuxedo Royale remains. Now they want to repair the ship.

:11:06. > :11:13.For many, she is synonymous with Pewsey weekends on Teesside and

:11:13. > :11:17.Tyneside but they -- this one's entertainment palace stands listing,

:11:18. > :11:27.leaking and rusting. An unlikely saviour from the port of Dover can

:11:28. > :11:29.

:11:29. > :11:35.save this icon stranded at the Port of Tees. We hope to make

:11:35. > :11:38.acquisition of the vessel. generation of north-eastern there's

:11:38. > :11:44.dancing on board the Tuxedo Royale and its sister vessel, but Tuxedo

:11:44. > :11:51.Princess. Its revolving dancefloor is still a talking point but beyond

:11:51. > :12:00.the disco lights, she is no ordinary vessel. She is their last

:12:00. > :12:06.surviving steam car ferry. She is important to Dover as the Bronze

:12:06. > :12:10.Age boat. The Tuxedo Princess was towed away a few years ago but the

:12:10. > :12:20.TSS Dover, stands helpless and partly sunken in Middlesbrough,

:12:20. > :12:20.

:12:20. > :12:28.with no apparent owner. We wish to base the restoration around an

:12:28. > :12:31.apprenticeship and regeneration vessel, the hall and the heavy

:12:31. > :12:39.machinery up on Teesside and when a certain amount has been achieved,

:12:39. > :12:43.we want to bring it to Dover to carry out the lighter tasks. A will

:12:43. > :12:50.cost 15 million to restore her and once seaworthy, she will return

:12:50. > :12:52.back to water as a pleasure vessel. A stage production isn't normally

:12:52. > :12:57.considered a success if the cast and crew were outnumbered the

:12:57. > :13:07.audience. That rule of thumb won't apply to York this year as 1500

:13:07. > :13:20.

:13:20. > :13:30.people are involved in a production This here, it is going to be rather

:13:30. > :13:37.

:13:37. > :13:42.Walked down the street and you will almost certainly bump into someone

:13:42. > :13:46.who has gone a bit biblical. Do know why is a great part, he

:13:46. > :13:51.gets to save humanity from the flood.

:13:51. > :13:54.The cast list is approaching 600, however, Mary must be a bigger

:13:54. > :13:58.role? A bit like to think so.

:13:58. > :14:06.But she is old. There are I am the mother of God.

:14:06. > :14:16.Sometimes Mary does not get much of a mention.

:14:16. > :14:20.

:14:20. > :14:25.I don't think anyone of us have really massive, Hamlet parks. G de

:14:25. > :14:26.Cordova quicker do do I auditioned and got the part of the Angel

:14:26. > :14:36.Gabriel, we will be working together.

:14:36. > :14:38.

:14:38. > :14:43.Time for Team Talk now, and we have a pretty good weekend of football

:14:43. > :14:48.in a moment, but first the team so far, their kings of British

:14:48. > :14:54.basketball, at the Newcastle Eagles. Their second Cup win of the season,

:14:54. > :15:01.this time the BBL Trophy. They did it the hard way. Nine points down

:15:01. > :15:08.against the Plymouth Raiders. They won at the return by 96-80,, the

:15:08. > :15:14.Eagles on course for a clean sweep of major honours.

:15:14. > :15:20.A real thrill, winning on your home court in front of your home fans,

:15:20. > :15:26.or becoming a deficit of nine points. It was stacked against us a

:15:26. > :15:33.little bit. We got it back. Redemption, however many years it

:15:33. > :15:38.took, redemption. We put ourselves in a good position to win all four,

:15:38. > :15:45.but we have to take it that at a time -- won at a time.

:15:45. > :15:48.Next stop is the lead. A ensure they will win, as well.

:15:48. > :15:52.Newcastle is focusing on the Europa League, possibly the Champions

:15:52. > :15:59.League, mainly due to the French Connection. We're not talking about

:15:59. > :16:03.these guys. They were watching yesterday's stunning 3-1 win. The

:16:03. > :16:09.Magpies are only just behind the Chelsea on goal difference. And one

:16:09. > :16:15.French guy doing particularly well at the moment is he dumb Ben Arfa.

:16:15. > :16:21.If that is clear you were looking for is this man. -- one man is Ben

:16:21. > :16:26.Arfa. He set up the first goal, scored

:16:26. > :16:36.the second and laid on this one. He scored five goals in six games

:16:36. > :16:37.

:16:37. > :16:42.and almost had a hat-trick, except Ben Foster managed to keep him out.

:16:42. > :16:46.There was a bit of a defensive mix- up between Mike will come since and

:16:46. > :16:52.10 Croxall. Ben Arfa and nearly got a fourth

:16:52. > :16:59.near the end. Even the manager is making the French Connection.

:17:00. > :17:09.We showed some real champagne stuff, they were a real handful today. I

:17:09. > :17:18.was pleased the way we saw the game out, because this year it was 3-0.

:17:18. > :17:22.We have been a phenomenal all here. The players have worked so hard.

:17:22. > :17:25.When was the last time both Newcastle and Sunderland finished

:17:25. > :17:33.in the top 10? They must have been some time back

:17:33. > :17:36.in the 1950s. 1955, even before I was born.

:17:36. > :17:40.Newcastle are back up there, Sunderland are moving back up with

:17:40. > :17:45.a great win over QPR. James Maclean, the star of the

:17:46. > :17:54.shoal signed a new contract this week, as well. He set up the first

:17:54. > :18:00.goal, scored the second and had a part to play in the third, as well.

:18:00. > :18:09.That goal was enjoyed by this young lady, who is apparently Morley, his

:18:09. > :18:15.number young fan. -- Molly. Not quite so bright was this two-

:18:15. > :18:25.footed challenge on Fraser Campbell. He threw a bit of a hissy fit.

:18:25. > :18:27.

:18:27. > :18:33.And what about this, from Bobby some honour? -- Zamore.

:18:33. > :18:38.And the final, the captain Joey Barton lost his place. Sunderland

:18:38. > :18:44.and James McLean have the last laugh. Up it has been a great week,

:18:44. > :18:47.not had too many of them, to be honest, to be awarded a new

:18:47. > :18:52.contract. This win today takes two to 40

:18:53. > :18:55.points. If I had said that to you in December what would you have

:18:55. > :19:00.said? Are I would have taken it, every

:19:00. > :19:04.single day of the week. 40 points looked a long way off in December

:19:04. > :19:07.for us. In the championship, and draw with

:19:07. > :19:10.Bristol City means Middlesbrough have won just two of their last

:19:10. > :19:15.seven games but they are still in the promotion list.

:19:15. > :19:20.That is because everyone else is dropping points, as well. They

:19:20. > :19:25.dropped a goal to Hogan Ephraim. A fabulous equaliser from Malaury

:19:25. > :19:30.Martin. He came on as a half-time substitute and has scored all three

:19:30. > :19:39.of his Middlesbrough goals. We keeper Scott Flinders had some do

:19:39. > :19:43.terrific saves to keep out Yeovil Town. They have gone -- they had

:19:43. > :19:51.gone 475 minutes without a goal against them, just short of eight

:19:51. > :19:55.hours, but Ryan Noble be scored. Also it looks like a fight between

:19:55. > :20:02.Notts County, Stevenage and Carlisle, who drew at Colchester

:20:02. > :20:10.thanks to a goal from James Berrett. Carlisle and Sunderland can still

:20:10. > :20:16.follow them to Wembley this season. One the same weekend in the FA, we

:20:16. > :20:26.could have done all Northern League clash. At Herne Bay and kept -- at

:20:26. > :20:27.

:20:27. > :20:31.her MBE in Kent Stevenage have moved up. Dunstan will also fancy

:20:31. > :20:38.their chances of reaching Wembley, probably not one of their best

:20:38. > :20:44.displays, but a late strike in a 1- 0 against Stavely could prove

:20:44. > :20:48.crucial in the next leg. A reminder that late kick-off is

:20:48. > :20:52.back tonight after one week off, and the boys are looking at all

:20:52. > :20:58.things medical in the wake of a heart attack that nearly claimed

:20:58. > :21:04.the life of Bolton's Fabrice Muamba. They'll be talking to the father of

:21:04. > :21:13.David Longhurst, who died at Heverlee 22 years ago.

:21:13. > :21:16.He collapsed on the pitch, no contact with anyone else. They used

:21:16. > :21:21.mouth-to-mouth resuscitation and whatever they had available, but

:21:21. > :21:29.they could not get him back to consciousness.

:21:29. > :21:32.He a terribly sad story there. All late kick-off at 11:35pm.

:21:32. > :21:37.Another blow for Newcastle Falcons as they tried to seal their place

:21:37. > :21:46.in the Premiership. The director of rugby Gary Gold admitted there was

:21:46. > :21:53.no we provide for his side as they lost 19 have the nine -- 19-9.

:21:53. > :21:57.Worcester's Alex Grove went over with the only try of the game.

:21:57. > :22:00.They were even denied a losing Boris point. They are still eight

:22:00. > :22:05.points adrift at the bottom of the lead.

:22:05. > :22:11.Away from sport, a treat for lovers of Alston's suite of the star Bjork

:22:11. > :22:16.is famous for confectionery and turns are the stuff is still

:22:16. > :22:26.produced in the city today. -- a treat for lovers of all things

:22:26. > :22:29.

:22:29. > :22:35.The there is something in chocolate Coldfield bromide. If you smell it

:22:35. > :22:39.and do not beat it makes you grumpy. The first thing visitors get to do

:22:39. > :22:43.is eat chocolate, but only after some top tasting tips.

:22:43. > :22:48.The is is where we taste for chocolate, first of all with

:22:48. > :22:58.looking at it, then the snap, then we have the smell. And of course,

:22:58. > :22:58.

:22:58. > :23:03.the taste. Let it waft around your tongue. You immediately feel happy,

:23:03. > :23:07.contented and relaxed. That is the way to taste chocolate.

:23:07. > :23:11.It's is the only visitor attraction where you can eat exhibit.

:23:11. > :23:14.We have been 25 years creating this visitor attraction.

:23:14. > :23:19.I know this is what you have been waiting for, getting down and dirty

:23:19. > :23:25.with the chocolate. Here is that chief chocolate here will be

:23:25. > :23:34.teaching me to hand-rolled truffles. We have some people did truffles

:23:35. > :23:41.Phil de Nash. He put them in your hand and roll them with chocolate.

:23:41. > :23:45.-- full of ganache. The idea is to make them a nice and rustic. It is

:23:45. > :23:52.thicker than expected. That is the gold or butter, it will give a nice

:23:52. > :23:56.shine. -- the cork or butter. I could certainly eat them at a

:23:56. > :24:06.quick rate, but the beauty of this place is that it understands the

:24:06. > :24:09.

:24:09. > :24:15.attraction intimately. Chocolate would definitely have

:24:15. > :24:18.melted today, wouldn't it? It is boiling. A lovely day, cycled to

:24:18. > :24:22.boiling. A lovely day, cycled to work for the first time. Can we do

:24:22. > :24:26.that for the rest of the week? A well, it has been remarkable

:24:26. > :24:29.today. This is the sort of whether we would be happy with at the

:24:29. > :24:36.height of some her. The temperatures are really out of the

:24:36. > :24:41.ordinary. Today we hit 21 Celsius inland, Keswick hitting that magic

:24:41. > :24:44.70 degrees Fahrenheit for the second day in a role. This is the

:24:44. > :24:48.senior study of that dramatic rescue operation, this evening it

:24:48. > :24:53.is a lot quieter you add Bootham Crescent, a family's making the

:24:53. > :24:56.most of the Sun's raised this evening. It is nice to have

:24:56. > :24:59.sunshine this evening thanks to the clock change to British Summer Time

:24:59. > :25:06.at the weekend. A quick look ahead tells us nothing will change very

:25:06. > :25:12.quickly. The next few days are fine and dry, later things will start to

:25:12. > :25:17.grunt louder and cooler, as well. We can see a big anticyclone, high

:25:17. > :25:20.pressure stays with us. Over the next few days the centre and drifts

:25:20. > :25:26.from east to west and eventually introduces a north-westerly wind.

:25:26. > :25:30.That will cool things don't over the tale of the week and may be

:25:30. > :25:36.some rain by the weekend. Between now and then it is essentially

:25:36. > :25:40.bone-dry. You will be lucky to spot any cloud in the sky at all. More

:25:40. > :25:45.of the same this evening, clear skies and light winds, and all the

:25:45. > :25:50.heat building up in the ground today just radiates away and at the

:25:50. > :25:56.temperatures drop a wave. Most places down to two or three Celsius.

:25:56. > :26:01.Low-lying areas close to freezing, a touch of frost. Some mist patches

:26:01. > :26:06.in the river valley bottoms. In the morning, early morning mist should
