:00:10. > :00:17.Welcome to Look North. In the programme tonight: They are
:00:17. > :00:21.losing their jobs but not their generosity. Alcan workers are done
:00:21. > :00:25.Nateing 30,000 to local charities. It shows good things can come out
:00:25. > :00:29.of a bad situation. Framed by his own colleagues and
:00:29. > :00:34.sent to jail. Former Cleveland police officer, Sultan Alam, talks
:00:34. > :00:38.about the impact on his life. always wanted to leave my mark on
:00:38. > :00:43.the police service. Many people will say I have. But it is not the
:00:43. > :00:47.mark I wanted to leave. This man owns this year's grand
:00:47. > :00:51.national favourite. Find out why he's giving his horse awhich on the
:00:51. > :00:57.day of the wig race. And running for gold, the couple entering the
:00:57. > :01:05.London Marathon to celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary. They know
:01:05. > :01:09.who to expect. I was overtaken by five people running in step! It was
:01:09. > :01:13.a bit unfair! Middlesbrough and Carlisle enter the home straight in
:01:13. > :01:23.the play-off places. But it was a bad night for Sunderland as Everton
:01:23. > :01:29.
:01:29. > :01:35.ended their FA Cup dream for this We start with a remarkable story.
:01:35. > :01:39.It comes courtesy of the 500 plus workers at the Alcan aluminium
:01:39. > :01:43.plant in Northumberland. The plant begins its close-down tomorrow.
:01:43. > :01:48.They'll all lose their jobs. Over the years, the workers have built
:01:48. > :01:53.up their own social fund. It has reached 30,000. As our reporter
:01:53. > :01:57.tells us, they've decided to give it all way away. It is the sort of
:01:57. > :02:02.story we don't often get the chance to tell.. The news brought us this
:02:02. > :02:06.and this and this. So let's cheer ourselves up with this and this and
:02:06. > :02:10.this. Three charities, three cheques,
:02:10. > :02:14.each for 10,000. The money's been saved over the years for things
:02:14. > :02:19.like Christmas parties and when their jobs went, this lot decided
:02:19. > :02:24.they'd like to help not themselves but others. You've restored faith
:02:24. > :02:28.in human nature for a lot of people, you and your pals here. Frplt it
:02:28. > :02:35.just goes to show out of a bad situation that some good things can
:02:35. > :02:40.come. This is one of them. You're terrific. Thank you. Among those to
:02:40. > :02:44.benefit, five-year-old Archie Anderson who has cerebral palsy.
:02:44. > :02:49.He's off to the United States where surgeons will operate to improve
:02:49. > :02:55.his mobility. You're going to America now? Yes. Are you looking
:02:55. > :02:59.forward to is the it? No. Why not? The answer was supposed to be yes!
:02:59. > :03:05.When we got a phone call we were overwhelmed. I was in floods of
:03:05. > :03:11.tears. It was amazing. It means we've hit our target and we can go.
:03:11. > :03:14.We can get the physiotherapy and everything Archie needs when he
:03:14. > :03:19.comes back. I can't thank people enough. It is just sensational. It
:03:19. > :03:23.makes such a huge difference. People can keep the money for
:03:23. > :03:27.themselves. To give it to a local charity that's trying to save
:03:27. > :03:31.children's lives every day, it is just a huge, huge gesture. These
:03:31. > :03:38.are people, of course, who could do with that money themselves? This is
:03:38. > :03:44.it. It is so much appreciated more so for that reason. For people in
:03:44. > :03:47.this situation to be thinking of charities, it's something else in
:03:47. > :03:50.itself. You just can't believe that's going to be something on
:03:50. > :03:55.their mind when there are so many other things on their mind, whether
:03:55. > :03:59.they can get other jobs etc. A lot of people worked here. Now it's
:03:59. > :04:05.coming to an end it seemed the just thing to do. Pass it down to good
:04:05. > :04:09.causes. Were you not tempted to keep it? No, never. There was a few
:04:09. > :04:14.options but everybody seemed to agree this is the best thing. It
:04:14. > :04:19.has put a real feel good factor across the place. And I think for
:04:19. > :04:23.years to come, people will feel proud of what they've done. Do you
:04:23. > :04:29.know what, you've put the biggest smile on my face I've had for aged.
:04:29. > :04:35.The applause was for the Ben fisheries. They should have been a
:04:35. > :04:39.-- applauding themselves. What a fabulous gesture.
:04:39. > :04:43.He was a former police officer. He was sent to jail for a crime he
:04:43. > :04:48.didn't commit. Sultan Alam was framed by his own colleagues at
:04:48. > :04:58.Cleveland Police were and convicted of handling stolen goods. He was
:04:58. > :04:58.
:04:58. > :05:04.later freed and after a 17-year fight was awarded 400,000 in kofrp
:05:04. > :05:09.saigs. He's been talking to our reporter Stuart Whincup.
:05:10. > :05:15.It destroyed pretty much every facet of my life. None of this
:05:15. > :05:22.should have happened. It was deliberate. It was malicious.
:05:22. > :05:26.Sultan Alam was the as the court heard stitched up by his own fellow
:05:26. > :05:30.police officers. Jailed for a crime he didn't commit. His two young
:05:30. > :05:35.daughters saw their father branded a criminal. They have suffered
:05:35. > :05:39.things no children should have to go through really. That's probably
:05:39. > :05:46.the most painful part of it. Parents can tolerate pain, but when
:05:46. > :05:50.it comes to their children, it is on a whole different level.
:05:50. > :05:55.case made headlines but he was eventually cleared of handling
:05:55. > :06:02.stolen goods. After a 17-year legal fight he was awarded 400,000 in
:06:03. > :06:08.composition. -- compensation. He'll find out how much he'll receive in
:06:08. > :06:14.loss of earnings next month. I have no idea where my career would have
:06:14. > :06:19.gone. Not knowing is very, very painful. Now, Sultan Alam's taking
:06:20. > :06:24.legal action against the Police Federation. He says it abandoned
:06:24. > :06:28.him just three weeks before his compensation hearing leaving him to
:06:28. > :06:32.defend itself. The federation cannot comment because of the
:06:32. > :06:38.ongoing investigation. But Alam says the way he was treated was
:06:38. > :06:44.appalling. I can only describe it as victimisation. Each time I've
:06:44. > :06:47.felt as if I'm not only fighting for my rights and for justice with
:06:48. > :06:52.Cleveland police, I've also been fighting the Police Federation.
:06:52. > :07:02.altogether of money, he says, will compensate him and his family for
:07:02. > :07:04.
:07:04. > :07:09.the pain and suffering they've endured.
:07:09. > :07:13.Parts of Tyneside and Teesside are in the top ten in a list of local
:07:13. > :07:17.authorities with the biggest truancy problems. Almost 9% of
:07:17. > :07:23.pupils in Newcastle and Middlesbrough are persist tently
:07:23. > :07:29.absent from school making them the 5th and sixth worst areas in
:07:29. > :07:31.England. Areas of North Yorkshire are now
:07:31. > :07:34.officially in drought. The Environment Agency says the public
:07:35. > :07:39.water supply should not be affected but it is concerned about the
:07:39. > :07:42.levels of the River Derwent and its catchments in the Ryedale and
:07:42. > :07:47.Scarborough districts. Staying in North Yorkshire, it is
:07:47. > :07:56.not somewhere you'd expect to catch the Tour de France. Officials could
:07:56. > :08:03.make a bid to stage the bike race in 2016. The hills, Dales and
:08:03. > :08:09.scenic coastline would present an awesome challenge for the cyclists.
:08:09. > :08:13.Officials from the committee are to be in Veited over to assess the bid.
:08:13. > :08:18.We know how highly Yorkshire things of itself. But today's conference
:08:18. > :08:22.at the Barbican in York was about sharing God's County with others.
:08:22. > :08:26.Tourism is Yorkshire's biggest industry employing a quarter of a
:08:26. > :08:30.million people and earning about 7 billion a year. Today, saw the
:08:30. > :08:35.official launch of the county's promotional video which aims to
:08:35. > :08:38.build on the 200 million plus annual visits already being made. A
:08:38. > :08:43.five-year business plan aims to grow the Yorkshire brand worldwide.
:08:43. > :08:48.But the big news was the county is bidding to bring home one of the
:08:48. > :08:54.most prestigious events in the sporting calendar. For Tour de
:08:54. > :08:59.France read Tour de Dales. Can you imagine the cyclists racing in
:08:59. > :09:04.their tense and twenties through the North York Moors Nash mal park.
:09:04. > :09:08.Leyburn, through the Dales. It doesn't get more stunning than that.
:09:08. > :09:12.That iconic scenery of Yorkshire will go global. Tour organisers are
:09:12. > :09:22.expected over in May to consider a possible route. But a final
:09:22. > :09:25.decision on the 2016 tour isn't expected for a couple of years.
:09:25. > :09:30.Catching up with a story we brought you on Tuesday's Look North. A
:09:30. > :09:37.house in Ferryhill in County Durham which was up for auction with a
:09:37. > :09:41.starting price for just 1 sold for 2,850. Standing next to the main
:09:41. > :09:49.line of the east coast railway it has been standing empty for nearly
:09:49. > :09:56.a decade. The winner bid bought the house for a family.
:09:56. > :10:01.The pasty tax have been cut in half by Ladbrokes. George Osborne was
:10:01. > :10:08.asked when he last bout a Greg's pasty. He couldn't remember. The
:10:08. > :10:10.plan to fight charge on freshly made sievery products. Gregs say it
:10:11. > :10:16.a tax on people who are already hard-pressed.
:10:16. > :10:21.The man who's giving away the grand national favourite and an Easter
:10:21. > :10:24.egg hunt with a difference. We meet The Artist who created these little
:10:24. > :10:29.treasures. And a beautiful evening here on the
:10:29. > :10:32.town moor in Newcastle and across the north-east and Cumbria. Will
:10:32. > :10:40.this great weather hold? I'll be back with a forecast at the end of
:10:40. > :10:45.the rest of tonight's news. As we heard at the top of the
:10:45. > :10:51.programme, one of the Ben fisheries of today's generosity by the
:10:51. > :10:55.workers of Alcan is the Freeman Hospital, the heart unit. It was
:10:55. > :11:00.the charity of Graham Wylie. His two-year-old daughter Keira is a
:11:00. > :11:04.patient there. Graham owns the favourite for next month's grand
:11:04. > :11:11.national nal. He handed over ownership of the horse for the day
:11:11. > :11:16.to raise 2000. Some men spend a lifetime dreaming
:11:16. > :11:22.of owning the grand national favourite. And former Sage owner
:11:22. > :11:26.Graham Wylie is that lucky man. And, he's giving it away. The horse is
:11:26. > :11:32.Prince de Beauchene. He's 8-1 favourite with the bookies. On
:11:32. > :11:35.grand national day, he'll be owned by Newcastle Falcons owner Semore
:11:35. > :11:39.Kurdi after a charity auction to raise thousands of pounds for the
:11:39. > :11:44.children's heart unit fund. When the auction took place last year,
:11:44. > :11:49.the prize on offer was merely the ownership of a horse for a day. It
:11:49. > :11:53.was only when the two men met last week that Graham told see more he
:11:53. > :12:00.was giving him the favourite for the grand Nash in a nal and if
:12:00. > :12:05.Prince de Beauchene wins, it will be Semore's name not Graham's which
:12:05. > :12:08.goes on the grand national role of honour. No, I'm not mad. I'm doing
:12:08. > :12:14.it for the charity. My daughter was there, had three operations. What
:12:14. > :12:19.can I do to say thank you. This is the best way, to raise as much
:12:19. > :12:23.money as I can and using my horse is a great way of doing it. Good
:12:24. > :12:29.luck to Semore and the charity. After the operation last December,
:12:29. > :12:35.doctors at the Freeman told Graham his own jockey-sized stature might
:12:35. > :12:43.be the key to Keira's future well- being. They said as long as she
:12:43. > :12:49.stays pet eat then this may be her last operation. That's great news.
:12:49. > :12:53.Great also paid tribute to the workers at Alcan for their
:12:53. > :12:58.generosity in handing over 10,000 from their own social fund to help
:12:58. > :13:01.the heart unit's cause. It is a very sad situation. Everyone
:13:01. > :13:04.doesn't want to see people losing their jobs. But for them to make
:13:04. > :13:14.such a gesture, given the circumstances they face, is
:13:14. > :13:16.
:13:16. > :13:22.tremendous. What brave men. What generous gesture.
:13:22. > :13:27.Poor diet et, not enough exercise and lack of respect sums up some
:13:27. > :13:30.people's opinions of young people nowadays N York, she are trying to
:13:30. > :13:36.tackle all these problems in vegetables. A scheme is turning
:13:36. > :13:41.unused land in the heart of the city's estates into veg gardens.
:13:41. > :13:45.Vandalised, unloved and eventually unused. This was a play area which
:13:45. > :13:48.is now going back to the community as a garden. It is the first of
:13:48. > :13:53.then which will appear in York in the next three years of the
:13:53. > :13:57.All will be on estates like this. All will be looked after by the
:13:57. > :14:02.people who live nearby. The kids are crucial.
:14:02. > :14:06.I guess a stereotype is the children coming along in an evening
:14:06. > :14:10.and will destroy it. By working with them, we make them feel it is
:14:10. > :14:15.theirs. Building that ownership and hopefully they'll wanted to protect
:14:15. > :14:20.it. The steel fence will become a living wall, branches instead of
:14:20. > :14:24.bars. The green space is being turned into vegetable beds. The
:14:24. > :14:30.best possible food for anyone prepared to grow it. For the moment,
:14:30. > :14:35.there's enthusiastic support. like doing all the willow and stuff.
:14:35. > :14:38.I'm really enjoying it. It's really fun. You get to take time off
:14:38. > :14:43.school. I really enjoy doing the digging. The local secondary
:14:43. > :14:48.school's providing the muddle. These are the kids who live here
:14:48. > :14:52.and they'll be the ones who benefit. So will the school. It helps with
:14:52. > :14:56.improvement in behaviour. Some of our children are not keen on being
:14:56. > :15:02.stuck in class all day. It is not to get out and get hands on, get
:15:02. > :15:07.involved in something physical. Not every child's academic they've
:15:07. > :15:11.something to offer. It has been really beneficial. They are
:15:11. > :15:21.planning for the long-term. Maybe life-long. Planting seeds and trees
:15:21. > :15:27.
:15:27. > :15:31.that will bear many different What a good idea a? If most of us
:15:31. > :15:41.were lucky to make it through 50 years of marriage, we might
:15:41. > :15:47.celebrate by taking a cruise. Not for one couple. Chris and Charm
:15:47. > :15:53.Robson have marked their milestone by entering a marathon.
:15:53. > :16:00.A gentle jog out of their warm marks the start of their daily
:16:01. > :16:07.routine. The couple vow and last year to run the London Marathon for
:16:07. > :16:16.special reasons. It was Chris's idea. He has run the London
:16:16. > :16:26.Marathon twice. He suggested it. The problem is getting a place.
:16:26. > :16:27.
:16:27. > :16:31.Twyman inch to get one. From that moment on, that was the schedule.
:16:31. > :16:41.This is what they will face. Tens of thousands of runners on the
:16:41. > :16:45.
:16:45. > :16:52.streets of London. Chris and Charm are raising money for a charity.
:16:52. > :17:00.People dress up as pantomime horses. I was overtaken last time by a
:17:00. > :17:09.Centipede. Five people were running instep which I thought was unfair.
:17:09. > :17:19.It is unlikely to be easy. Last week, I ran six miles. It made me
:17:19. > :17:21.
:17:21. > :17:30.tired. I was going to say you would never catch my wife doing that. She
:17:30. > :17:40.hasn't started training for her marathon yet.
:17:40. > :17:43.
:17:43. > :17:49.The Wembley dream is over for another year.
:17:49. > :17:52.He started arriving They started arriving early for what the
:17:52. > :17:55.majority of a 43,000 crowd hoped would be one of those famous FA Cup
:17:55. > :17:59.nights. The Sunderland team coach dropped the players off well before
:17:59. > :18:01.kick-off, which is more than can be said of the Everton bus - held up
:18:01. > :18:04.in traffic to the fury of boss David Moyes.
:18:04. > :18:06.But roared on by nearly 7,000 visiting supporters in a proper
:18:06. > :18:09.cup-tie atmosphere that only seemed to galvanise the visitors, who
:18:09. > :18:11.seemed hell bent at booking a Wembley semi-final against
:18:11. > :18:13.Merseyside neighbours Liverpool. And by the end, that's exactly what
:18:13. > :18:14.they'd achieved leaving the Sunderland boss understandably
:18:14. > :18:17.dejected. Everton dominated the first half
:18:17. > :18:19.with first Sunderland's nemesis Tim Cahill and then Nikica Jelavic
:18:19. > :18:22.bringing the best out of Simon Mignolet.
:18:22. > :18:24.It was no surprise when Everton took the lead - a beautifully
:18:24. > :18:31.worked goal finished by the dangerous Jelavic. A I thought we
:18:31. > :18:41.were ready for the Game. From that viewpoint, it is hard to take. It
:18:41. > :18:49.
:18:49. > :18:51.is such a big incentive. It was no surprise when Everton took the lead.
:18:51. > :18:55.Keith This was about the closest the home
:18:55. > :18:58.side came to a first-half equaliser. And it only got worse in the second
:18:58. > :19:01.half with the Merseysiders going 2 up courtesy of an own goal from
:19:01. > :19:03.substitute David Vaughan - who'd only been on the pitch for 4
:19:03. > :19:06.minutes. The well-shackled Sessegonon did
:19:06. > :19:13.manage to hit the post and and after Jelavic went close again,
:19:13. > :19:15.Fraizer Campbell threatened a late consolation but it wasn't to be.
:19:15. > :19:19.In truth Everton, dangerous in attack and solid in defence,
:19:19. > :19:24.deserved their comfortable win. For Sunderland, there's a league trip
:19:24. > :19:33.to Man City to look forward to or maybe not. Wembley will have to
:19:33. > :19:43.wait for another year. We didn't perform well enough. That is
:19:43. > :19:44.
:19:44. > :19:54.disappointing. To see me at my Spear just before the Game, the
:19:54. > :19:55.
:19:55. > :20:04.noise level. It was a great evening. Again night for football and we
:20:04. > :20:14.disappointed. There was better news for the Quorn Carlisle and
:20:14. > :20:18.
:20:18. > :20:28.Middlesbrough. Boro drew at Ipswich. This was to prove a costly night
:20:28. > :20:29.
:20:29. > :20:34.for Tony more break. There will be more concern about another Reine
:20:34. > :20:44.injury. They will need better finishing than this to make sure of
:20:44. > :20:45.
:20:45. > :20:55.the play-offs. Fortune was on their side, the visitors took the lead
:20:55. > :21:02.
:21:02. > :21:12.after the hour mark. Let better have become -- last word. Carlisle
:21:12. > :21:17.
:21:17. > :21:27.United beat MK Dons despite this penalty. Two late goals from
:21:27. > :21:27.
:21:27. > :21:37.Sunderland came to the rescue. It took a penalty to seal all three
:21:37. > :21:40.
:21:40. > :21:50.points. One of Durham's longest serving
:21:50. > :21:57.players is on the move. Mark Davies has left. He entered Durham's
:21:57. > :22:07.Academy in 19... For the past few seasons, he has been plagued by
:22:07. > :22:17.injury. Could Nissan be heading into Formula One? Martin Brundle
:22:17. > :22:20.
:22:20. > :22:29.was in Sunderland. Martin Brundle will compete in a Nissan powered
:22:29. > :22:34.car. I don't know or with Nissan are heading into Formula One.
:22:34. > :22:41.Insanity are already there with Red Bull. They could be enough front-
:22:41. > :22:50.running car or for real one. That would be interesting. If you have
:22:50. > :22:57.been on an Easter egg hunt, they would be hard boiled or chocolate.
:22:57. > :23:03.Ceramic techniques are part of an Easter egg hunt.
:23:03. > :23:13.Britain's biggest Easter egg hunt it is organised by the world of
:23:13. > :23:14.
