:01:43. > :01:47.and brutal murders carried out in the victim's own homes. The first

:01:47. > :01:53.was at Middlesbrough on Monday night where the body of and 81-

:02:29. > :02:34.with both murders. Earlier we heard from the Chief Superintendent of

:02:34. > :02:39.Cleveland Police. We are determined to find James Allen and bring him

:02:39. > :02:47.to justice. Anyone who knows where he is should contact us. Do not

:03:23. > :03:27.Allen, they must contact the police directly.

:03:27. > :03:37.What has been the reaction in the town?

:03:38. > :03:45.Would be is the very picturesque. - - would be. Earlier I spoke to some

:03:45. > :03:51.of the residents. There is a sense of shock. Totally surprised. We do

:03:51. > :04:01.not expect anything like this. do not expect a murder on your own

:04:01. > :04:03.

:04:03. > :04:08.street. It makes you very scared. It is not the money, it is the

:04:08. > :04:12.feeling that somebody could enter at night when you are sleeping.

:04:12. > :04:22.Police say this operation will continue until they find James

:04:22. > :04:22.

:04:22. > :04:25.Allen. There will be more on this story on our late bulletin tonight.

:04:25. > :04:29.It was an ordinary trip out that ended with a family being torn

:04:29. > :04:33.apart. Three members of one family were killed when the car they were

:04:33. > :04:37.in hit a lorry in East Durham. Tonight an elderly woman remains in

:04:37. > :04:43.a serious condition, while a lorry driver continues to be questioned

:04:43. > :04:48.by the police. Our reporter sent us this report.

:04:48. > :04:54.Friends came and laid flowers. Three generations of the same

:04:54. > :05:04.family were killed within seconds. Grandfather. Granddaughter. Great

:05:04. > :05:05.

:05:05. > :05:11.granddaughter. We have a large investigation team working on this.

:05:12. > :05:18.This evening police identified those who died. Destiny Reed, 14

:05:18. > :05:24.months old. Her mother, at Natalie Simpson, 18. Great-grandfather

:05:24. > :05:28.Robert Reed, 75. His wife, 74-year- old Margaret remained sees the ill

:05:28. > :05:32.in hospital. A lorry driver is being questioned by the police and

:05:32. > :05:37.has been arrested. His vehicle ended up on the golf course which

:05:37. > :05:47.runs alongside the road back. The club's order says it is a dangerous

:05:47. > :05:48.

:05:48. > :05:55.road. I have be farming in this area for 30 years. I have had

:05:55. > :05:58.occasion to pick up injured people because of crashers. The golf

:05:59. > :06:03.course owner said if you woke up and down this road you can see lot

:06:03. > :06:08.of holes in the hedgerows with accents have taken place. Police

:06:08. > :06:15.say it is not an accident blackspot. In the last five years there have

:06:16. > :06:21.been nine collisions. That is not will be would class as a dangerous

:06:21. > :06:26.road. The family only live a few miles away and would only have been

:06:26. > :06:36.in the car a matter of minutes. A seemingly regular car journey

:06:36. > :06:40.

:06:40. > :06:43.ending with tragic consequences. I Newcastle engineering company has

:06:43. > :06:48.tried to attend school children to take up a career in engineering

:06:48. > :06:55.with the promise of cash. Pearson Engineering is giving money to 16

:06:55. > :06:59.euros to try to expand the manufacturing sector in the region.

:06:59. > :07:05.Since the end of World War II is a Newcastle engineering company has

:07:05. > :07:12.made life-saving equipment - mine detectors, detonators for the army.

:07:12. > :07:22.Now a lifeline is being offered to Newcastle students. 1,200 will be

:07:22. > :07:22.

:07:22. > :07:27.given to each of 30 children who commits to a future in Engineering.

:07:27. > :07:37.We are trying to persuade the cleverest children to go into

:07:37. > :07:38.

:07:38. > :07:40.science and engineering rather than history and economics. Five pupils

:07:40. > :07:44.from St Cuthbert's School will get the cash to spend on whatever they

:07:44. > :07:52.wish. But the school claims Engineering is already an enticing

:07:52. > :07:58.prospect. There are lots of opportunities. The next 20 years

:07:58. > :08:08.will have great opportunities. Today's visit appeared to have done

:08:08. > :08:09.

:08:09. > :08:17.the trick. They are trying to make staff that you good news every day.

:08:17. > :08:23.I like electronics more than engineering. Who knows. Some years

:08:23. > :08:29.down the line it might be this boy showing off the factory to a new

:08:29. > :08:36.bunch of budding engineers. You can find out what other people

:08:36. > :08:41.are saying about this story on our Facebook page.

:08:41. > :08:46.The UK economy is back in recession. The affects of difficult economic

:08:46. > :08:56.conditions are obvious in many parts of our region. Clayton Moore

:08:56. > :09:03.has been hit hard. -- Cleator Moor. 10 % of people in that town

:09:03. > :09:08.received Jobseeker's Allowance. Around the main square there are

:09:08. > :09:16.eight in the businesses. But the remaining jurors in the town are

:09:16. > :09:21.determined to try and turn around the fortunes of the town.

:09:21. > :09:24.A sure sign of tough times. Cleator Moor's main shopping street has

:09:24. > :09:28.been in decline since a supermarkets moved out of town.

:09:28. > :09:36.Many other shoppers followed. Businesses have been closing

:09:36. > :09:46.steadily over the past five years. It is the worst it has ever been.

:09:46. > :09:47.

:09:47. > :09:54.Cleator Moor is slowly dying. Everybody is travelling out of town.

:09:55. > :09:59.There are a lot of shops closing. Existing shop orders say they want

:09:59. > :10:03.to bite back at the recession. They have been restarted the Chamber of

:10:03. > :10:07.Trade and a bidding for money to improve the high street so it is

:10:08. > :10:14.not just the Scout signs that attract people in. 10 years ago it

:10:14. > :10:21.was a place where people used to come to shop, to spend their money.

:10:21. > :10:26.They used to come in the evening to visit the restaurants and pubs. All

:10:26. > :10:30.of those are in need of initiatives to improve things. This plot of

:10:30. > :10:34.land it is a reason why many businesses think it is time to act.

:10:34. > :10:38.It will be their home of a 4 million health centre. They say

:10:38. > :10:42.that is the most Investment Cleator Moor has seen in a long time.

:10:42. > :10:46.Across the square from the empty shops, one place is bucking the

:10:46. > :10:55.trend. Today another new business is moving in to this enterprise

:10:55. > :11:04.centre. This company reinvest all its profits keeping rents low.

:11:04. > :11:12.now have 28 us as us and the complex. -- 28 businesses in that

:11:12. > :11:18.this complex. We are and 95 % full. That is very good. The challenge

:11:18. > :11:28.now is for those on the High Street to encourage more entrepreneurs to

:11:28. > :11:30.

:11:30. > :11:36.take the plunge. Finding those with no money and the

:11:36. > :11:40.nerve to do so will be a challenge. There are some flood alerts in

:11:40. > :11:45.place the seeding. Emergency services in County Durham are

:11:45. > :11:49.continuing to respond to localised flooding. They attended 30 floodlit

:11:49. > :11:55.that calls this afternoon. Police are warning that motorists should

:11:55. > :12:00.drive with caution. Hundreds of acres have march on

:12:00. > :12:05.Downing Street in a protest over the so-called pasty tax. Organised

:12:05. > :12:12.by the Newcastle bakery chain Greggs, 300 people gathered on

:12:12. > :12:18.Whitehall to abject to the proposal to put extra VAT on hot snacks.

:12:18. > :12:22.Jessie J from a talent show The Voice will be a headline it ashore

:12:22. > :12:30.in Northumberland in July. We are told it will be the biggest show

:12:30. > :12:36.ever held there. Plenty still to come. News of a

:12:36. > :12:38.major cycling race in her area, plus the would be Olympian whose

:12:38. > :12:42.marathon journey ended in disappointment.

:12:42. > :12:52.Heavy rain is causing problems in parts of the region I will give you

:12:52. > :12:54.

:12:54. > :13:00.the full weather forecast at the This time next week, the polling

:13:00. > :13:05.stations will be open. Candidates will compete for 210 sees across

:13:05. > :13:10.cow -- councils in the area. Our political editor has been sizing up

:13:10. > :13:16.the competition. 2012 is a big year for athletes but

:13:16. > :13:20.before any Olympic excitement, there is another set of competitors.

:13:20. > :13:26.Politicians fighting the local elections. One-third of seats are

:13:26. > :13:31.up for grabs across Tyne and Wear, Carlisle, South Lakeland, Harrogate

:13:31. > :13:36.and Craven. The whole council is that for election in Hartlepool.

:13:36. > :13:40.Labour has been top of the podium for years but the Conservatives and

:13:40. > :13:44.Liberal Democrats are scrapping it out for second and third. I don't

:13:44. > :13:50.expect it to change much but that will not stop politicians straining

:13:50. > :13:53.every sinew. Take Labour. They want to strengthen their hold on the

:13:53. > :13:57.councils they already run but after years of trying, they would also

:13:57. > :14:02.like to cross the finishing line and take back control of Carlisle.

:14:02. > :14:08.It is vital to send a clear message to government that the region

:14:08. > :14:11.cannot be taken for granted. They have written us off. Lib Dems have

:14:11. > :14:16.friendly sold out this region. We need a strong Labour voice to stand

:14:16. > :14:21.up for our region and to mitigate it is the worst excesses of this

:14:21. > :14:26.Government's cuts. The Lib Dems struggled to get over the Garrick -

:14:26. > :14:29.- barrier of being in government last year. This time the hurdles

:14:29. > :14:33.look at -- as high but this time they say they offer something

:14:33. > :14:39.different. We will listen to people about their problems and we work

:14:39. > :14:44.hard on behalf of our communities and that is one reason people need

:14:44. > :14:47.to vote for us in local elections. We are not so bowed to ideology but

:14:47. > :14:52.think of best solutions for are areas and will be determined to get

:14:53. > :14:57.that. Conservatives have upset their part on the local elections

:14:57. > :15:01.pretty low this year but that does not mean they are not determined to

:15:01. > :15:09.convince you to vote for a Conservative councillor. It is

:15:09. > :15:12.important people realise that they are voting for local politicians,

:15:13. > :15:18.people who vote for all the things that matter when you stand on the

:15:18. > :15:22.doorstep. It is about what happens in your community not nationally

:15:22. > :15:28.and voting Conservative delivers better services and better quality

:15:28. > :15:33.services at a lower rate for local voters. Faster, higher and longer

:15:33. > :15:38.is the aim for athletes but the politicians now, however hard they

:15:38. > :15:46.peak -- compete, only the voters can decide.

:15:46. > :15:49.That was a nice sporty shot to end Let's start this evening with some

:15:49. > :15:53.more exciting news for Cumbria. The Pirelli Rally sets off from

:15:53. > :15:57.Carlisle tomorrow night. And the fourth stage of this year's cycling

:15:57. > :16:01.race, the Tour of Britain, will set off from the city as well this

:16:01. > :16:04.autumn. It'll be the first time since 2005 that the race - which

:16:04. > :16:06.features some of the world's leading competitors - has been in

:16:06. > :16:09.Carlisle. It will leave on September the 12th.

:16:09. > :16:13.Well, the popularity of cycling in the North East and Cumbria

:16:13. > :16:16.continues to grow. And now serious riders have a new challenge in the

:16:17. > :16:20.shape of the Etape Pennines. It's a gruelling ride which takes place in

:16:20. > :16:24.Teesdale and Weardale, as Martin Emmerson explains.

:16:24. > :16:27.This is no ride for the faint- hearted. It crosses some of the

:16:27. > :16:31.highest roads in Britain and it boasts the sort of climbs that

:16:31. > :16:35.wouldn't look out of place in an Alpine Stage of The Tour De France.

:16:35. > :16:43.Two time world champion Rob Hayles was among those who tested part of

:16:43. > :16:48.the route from High Force. Pretty savage out there today. Very Healy.

:16:48. > :16:51.Dead roads and beautiful scenery in between the clouds. It is difficult

:16:51. > :16:59.and it will be extremely tough in October.

:16:59. > :17:02.The Etape will be on closed roads making it safer for riders.

:17:02. > :17:07.would encourage people to put the training in and respect the

:17:07. > :17:11.challenge. It is do a ball but it is not one for your first time. I

:17:11. > :17:16.would like to say that people can do it but I would like to encourage

:17:16. > :17:24.as many to take part as possible but there are challenging hills

:17:24. > :17:28.which will require some training. But James Robinson, from the

:17:28. > :17:31.organisers IMG, admits it's not for novices. The ride will take place

:17:31. > :17:34.on October 7th, beginning and finishing in Durham. It's part of a

:17:34. > :17:37.series of events expected to raise 1 million for Marie Curie Cancer

:17:37. > :17:41.Care. Sportives like this are growing in popularity. The Cyclone

:17:41. > :17:46.in Northumberland attracts around 4,000 riders every year.

:17:46. > :17:52.calendar is jam-packed. There are tens of thousands of riders who do

:17:52. > :17:59.this at weekends. It is an explosion.

:17:59. > :18:04.An explosion because of Britain Now he's spent much of the season

:18:04. > :18:06.on the sidelines - in the last few weeks because of a thigh injury -

:18:07. > :18:10.but Newcastle United striker Peter Lovenkrands is back in the

:18:10. > :18:13.limelight with a novel fund-raising venture in memory of his late

:18:14. > :18:16.father who died from Alzheimer's disease at the age of just 61.

:18:16. > :18:19.Newcastle's promotion-winning season - a goal against rivals West

:18:19. > :18:24.Brom scored by the Danish winger with the Scottish accent, Peter

:18:24. > :18:26.Lovenkrands. He was still coming to terms with the death in Denmark of

:18:26. > :18:35.his father, Bent, who'd been diagnosed with Alzheimer's five

:18:35. > :18:39.years earlier. I was about to leave the House to go to the airport and

:18:39. > :18:45.they couldn't get out the door quick enough. When I was about to

:18:45. > :18:52.go out, my mum was on the phone and told me. It was the worst feeling I

:18:52. > :18:56.have ever had in my life. He was such a family man and to suddenly

:18:56. > :19:00.see him forget things and he would always remember everything. The

:19:00. > :19:03.stories he used to tell us... He couldn't tell us any more. It was

:19:03. > :19:07.heartbreaking. Peter's emotional goal celebration captured the

:19:07. > :19:09.hearts of the nation. Now, two years on, he hopes a series of

:19:09. > :19:12.online auctions helped by the social network site Twitter will

:19:12. > :19:18.raise thousands for the Alzheimer's Society. Team mates have already

:19:18. > :19:24.rallied round but the wider football world is involved too.

:19:25. > :19:29.even managed to get a signed Tottenham top and gloves from Aston

:19:29. > :19:32.Villa as well. The most coveted prize up for auction is a VIP trip

:19:32. > :19:35.to the sold-out Manchester City game. Before that, though, a tough

:19:35. > :19:41.trip to Wigan and with his rehabilitation still not complete,

:19:41. > :19:45.another nervous afternoon on the She was aiming for her Olympic

:19:45. > :19:49.dream. At the age of 33, Alyson Dixon competed in the London

:19:49. > :19:53.Marathon on Sunday. She was among several athletes aiming to clinch

:19:53. > :19:57.the last British place on the Olympic team.

:19:57. > :20:00.Alyson needed to smash her personal best and a bit more to qualify and

:20:00. > :20:10.she's had the whole of the region rooting for her. Adele Robinson

:20:10. > :20:21.

:20:21. > :20:28.Just days after returning from her recent altitude training in Kenya,

:20:28. > :20:34.Alyson is in London. Her race is under way for the last British spot

:20:34. > :20:39.on the Olympic marathon team. And only her second London Marathon

:20:39. > :20:44.ever. This is the biggest challenge of her running career so far.

:20:44. > :20:49.was very relaxed this morning and focused. She knew there was a job

:20:50. > :20:55.to be done. She prepared physically and mentally. She needs to complete

:20:55. > :21:04.it in at least two hours and 30 minutes. Sheet always realised

:21:04. > :21:13.making the Olympics is a big task although a dream. -- a big ask.

:21:13. > :21:18.mile 22, cramp set in and she knew she would not make the time. On the

:21:18. > :21:26.other side of the river by London bridge, her family waited for her

:21:26. > :21:33.return. The first. We saw how was about 12 1/2 miles. She looked very

:21:33. > :21:39.relaxed. People were saying, who is it? We said it was a daughter and

:21:39. > :21:45.they said that we must be very proud. We are. -- the first time we

:21:45. > :21:50.saw her. I didn't do the performance I thought I was capable

:21:50. > :21:56.of but otherwise I am quite at beat. It is a marathon running and these

:21:56. > :22:01.things happen. Up until about 23 miles, I was on for a good run and

:22:01. > :22:08.a good Pb but my legs started to plant -- cramp on us and that was

:22:08. > :22:14.pretty much over. Her final time was two hours 35 minutes and 45

:22:14. > :22:21.seconds. She came 24th in the women's elite race and the 7th

:22:21. > :22:28.British woman to finish. Back at home in Sunderland, her Olympic

:22:28. > :22:34.dream over for this year, Alyson is recovering and reflecting. I am

:22:34. > :22:38.still a bit sore but I am OK other than that. I went over things a few

:22:38. > :22:45.times in my head and tail I got those crumbs there was nothing more

:22:45. > :22:51.I could have done. Have you been for a run since? No. I am

:22:51. > :22:56.struggling to walk! She has to weeks' rest and next dishy make

:22:56. > :23:06.enter other championships and then around the corner the Commonwealth

:23:06. > :23:16.

:23:16. > :23:21.Games. It has been a dream since I Fingers crossed for 2016.
