:00:02. > :00:05.Hello and welcome to Friday's Look North. Our top story.
:00:05. > :00:15.Still on the run after two brutal murders. Tonight, fresh revelations
:00:15. > :00:15.
:00:15. > :00:19.about suspect James Allen. To I can confirm we are looking at other
:00:19. > :00:22.offences allegedly committed by James Allen.
:00:22. > :00:25.Armed officers surround Allen's home as police reveal he knew the
:00:25. > :00:28.first victim. And shock and fear in the seaside town where the second
:00:28. > :00:30.victim's body was found two days ago.
:00:30. > :00:33.Also tonight: The call to bring 1600 civil-
:00:33. > :00:36.service jobs from London to the North.
:00:36. > :00:42.And as the number of attacks on guide dogs goes up, will the plan
:00:42. > :00:45.to microchip all newborn puppies help control the problem?
:00:45. > :00:48.In sport, it is crunch time for a couple of our football clubs.
:00:48. > :00:50.Can Middlesbrough make it into the play-offs for the Premier League?
:00:50. > :01:00.And can Carlisle keep alive their dream of promotion to the
:01:00. > :01:05.
:01:05. > :01:10.Championship? Tonight, fresh revelations about a
:01:10. > :01:13.man on the run after two horrendous murders. It has emerged that James
:01:14. > :01:18.Allen is a violent criminal who was on bail from court when the deaths
:01:18. > :01:24.took place. The police say he may have cycled 30 miles from the first
:01:24. > :01:27.murder to the scene of the second. On Monday, 81-year-old Colin
:01:27. > :01:32.Dunford was found dead in his home in Middlesbrough. On Wednesday, 50-
:01:32. > :01:38.year-old Julie Davison was found dead at her home in Whitby. Today,
:01:38. > :01:40.more than 100 police officers continued the hunt for the suspect.
:01:40. > :01:43.And there were dramatic developments this morning when,
:01:43. > :01:49.just after 9am, armed police surrounded the suspect's house in
:01:49. > :01:51.Lothian Road, Middlesbrough. But he was not found inside the property.
:01:51. > :02:00.Our chief reporter has been following events in Middlesbrough.
:02:00. > :02:05.And we'll hear from Andy Smythe in Whitby. The police say he was on
:02:05. > :02:09.bail, what was he in court for in the first place?
:02:09. > :02:16.That is something we do not know and the police are refusing to tell
:02:16. > :02:21.us. But we do know that James Allen new and at one time lived next door
:02:21. > :02:26.to Colin Dunford. He spent time in prison and we know he is suspected
:02:26. > :02:31.of committing other crimes over the past week. There is a lot we know
:02:31. > :02:35.about him but we know the police were looking for him after the
:02:35. > :02:41.weekend at a serious -- after a serious assault at his flat. These
:02:41. > :02:45.pictures were taken by a neighbour. A quiet morning was transformed.
:02:45. > :02:51.Nobody knew there was an armed operation until it was under way.
:02:51. > :03:01.The police shouted to say everyone go back in their houses. There was
:03:01. > :03:02.
:03:02. > :03:06.no commotion beforehand. They came incomplete silence. A man was led
:03:06. > :03:09.from the building but it was the tenant from an adjoining flat. The
:03:09. > :03:15.people living in Lothian Road cannot believe Britain's most
:03:15. > :03:20.wanted is the man they have been chatting to. Considering I have had
:03:20. > :03:27.conversations with him, not longer than ten minutes, maybe, but he has
:03:27. > :03:32.not come across as a person like that. That puts doubt in my head
:03:32. > :03:38.who I speak to. I do not judge a book by its cover, I try to be
:03:38. > :03:47.polite to people. I was just trying to be nice to the person. I cannot
:03:47. > :03:53.believe it. He is suspected for double murder. He said do you need
:03:53. > :03:59.any work doing, I am a bricklayer? I said I have no work to do. He
:03:59. > :04:07.said anyway, I am moving out. Where? I am going to Whitby or
:04:07. > :04:16.somewhere, Scarborough or somewhere. I rang the police yesterday. Nobody
:04:16. > :04:23.turned up. Why James Allen? This afternoon, a press conference. How
:04:23. > :04:28.do you know if it is James Allen? We have information within the body
:04:28. > :04:35.of the inquiry. For operational reasons I cannot divulge that. But
:04:35. > :04:39.I can confirm it is James Allen we are looking for. Tonight the hunt
:04:39. > :04:45.continues and police say it will continue around the clock until he
:04:45. > :04:51.is under arrest. There are now more than 100 officers on this case and
:04:51. > :04:54.police believe James Allen is probably still in Middlesbrough or
:04:55. > :04:58.de Whitby area. More details have emerged today
:04:58. > :05:01.about the last movements of Julie Davison. Her brutal death has left
:05:01. > :05:09.people in the North Yorkshire seaside town of Whitby feeling
:05:09. > :05:15.shocked and scared. Our reporter spent the day there.
:05:15. > :05:22.Tell us more about the mood there today.
:05:22. > :05:27.Whitby is a quiet seaside town. And West Cliff is a quiet area.
:05:27. > :05:35.Understandably, people are scared that James Allen is still at large
:05:35. > :05:40.tonight. And there is shock at a brutal murder in the flat behind me.
:05:40. > :05:47.Why was a kind and gentle woman murdered in her home? Did she know
:05:47. > :05:52.her killer? Julie Davison was well- known and well-liked in the area of
:05:52. > :05:58.Whitby where she lived. On Tuesday she won on the bingo. 24 hours
:05:58. > :06:05.later, her childhood friend David was called by her family to say she
:06:05. > :06:11.had been murdered. It was duly's family who rang and told me. It was
:06:11. > :06:19.a situation where you think it is a dream? -- Julie Davison. I could
:06:19. > :06:24.not believe it. For everybody in the Cup, everybody was upset. -- in
:06:24. > :06:33.the club. The overriding feeling his anger. That somebody could do
:06:33. > :06:39.something like this to such a nice and quiet unassuming person. Julie
:06:39. > :06:44.Davison worked for charity. She worked at the shop. She did a great
:06:44. > :06:50.deal of voluntary work for the mental health charity Mind. It said
:06:50. > :06:56.she was a really lovely person who will be sorely missed by everyone.
:06:56. > :07:02.West Cliff is a quiet area. It is central to the tourist trade. This
:07:02. > :07:12.bed and breakfast is now next door to a major crime scene. This is the
:07:12. > :07:13.
:07:13. > :07:17.sort of thing that would not happen around this area. It is a shock.
:07:17. > :07:24.is a tight-knit community. There is an element of fear. People are
:07:24. > :07:31.worried. We do not know where this man is. It could be anywhere.
:07:31. > :07:34.the town was preparing for one of its biggest events. That sits
:07:34. > :07:40.uncomfortably with the fact that a killer has struck and is
:07:40. > :07:45.potentially still at large. I can tell you there are fresh
:07:45. > :07:49.revelations in North Yorkshire tonight. Police confirmed that
:07:49. > :07:55.after Julie Davison was murdered in the flat behind me, James Allen
:07:55. > :08:01.checked into a Scarborough hotel. He was put there for two nights but
:08:01. > :08:10.only stayed for one night. The police are now working on what he
:08:11. > :08:14.did next. The family of two adults and a baby
:08:14. > :08:17.killed in a car crash in County Durham have said no words can
:08:17. > :08:20.describe how they are struggling to come to terms with their loss.
:08:20. > :08:23.Destiny Reed, who was 14 months old, her 18-year-old mother Natalie
:08:23. > :08:26.Simpson, and Destiny's grandfather, Robert Reed, who was 75, died when
:08:26. > :08:31.the car they were in collided with a lorry between Seaham and
:08:31. > :08:33.Houghton-le-Spring on Wednesday. Mr Reed's wife, 74-year-old Margaret,
:08:34. > :08:38.remains in a critical but stable condition at hospital in
:08:38. > :08:44.Middlesbrough. A 42-year-old lorry driver being questioned over the
:08:44. > :08:47.deaths has been bailed until June. An inquest into the death of an
:08:47. > :08:50.outdoor instructor during a canoe trip in Cumbria has returned a
:08:50. > :08:54.verdict of accidental death. Grant Kinnie, who was 25 and from
:08:54. > :08:57.Darlington, drowned in the River Eamont near Penrith. He had been
:08:57. > :09:03.directing his pupils to safety when his canoe got caught under a
:09:03. > :09:05.submerged tree and capsized. The captain of a Premier League
:09:05. > :09:09.football team has admitted causing thousands of pounds of damage to
:09:09. > :09:12.cars parked close to the home of his club's arch rivals. Sunderland
:09:12. > :09:14.skipper Lee Cattermole accepted a conditional caution for vandalising
:09:14. > :09:24.five vehicles in Newcastle's China Town, near to Newcastle United's
:09:24. > :09:25.
:09:25. > :09:28.ground. The 24-year-old damaged the cars during a night out in December.
:09:28. > :09:33.An entire government department employing 1600 people should be
:09:33. > :09:36.moved out of London and relocated to Tyneside. That is the view of
:09:36. > :09:41.one MP who says the North East economy would receive a boost from
:09:41. > :09:48.moving more civil servants out of the South East. But is the idea
:09:48. > :09:53.practical, or a simply a flight of fantasy? Our political reporter has
:09:53. > :09:58.more. London's landmarks, bringing in
:09:58. > :10:03.tourists. Successive governments have sought to move for civil
:10:03. > :10:06.servants out of Whitehall and the south-east. In 2010, the Marine
:10:06. > :10:13.Management Organisation moved into this building in North Shields on
:10:13. > :10:21.Tyneside, bringing 100 jobs. Around 1300 civil service posts have moved
:10:21. > :10:27.in the last eight years. One MP has a more radical vision. I would like
:10:27. > :10:32.to see every English region get a government department. It would be
:10:32. > :10:37.a big cost-saving, taking jobs out of London and the real estate would
:10:37. > :10:43.be available to sell or to lease out. That would make a difference
:10:43. > :10:48.to revenues. Where could they go? Transport could go to Birmingham.
:10:48. > :10:49.Education to Nottingham. Communities and local government to
:10:49. > :10:57.Liverpool and the Department for International Development and its
:10:58. > :11:01.1600 jobs to Newcastle. Some unions are not happy. Clearly, we would
:11:01. > :11:05.welcome more civil service jobs in the North East. We would not
:11:05. > :11:10.welcome them on the basis of colleagues using jobs elsewhere in
:11:10. > :11:14.the country. We would not welcome them on the basis of the
:11:14. > :11:20.introduction of regional pay rates. Mr Mann is floating the idea
:11:20. > :11:26.knowing it might not see the light of day but it has caused further
:11:26. > :11:33.debate about centralisation of government departments. There is
:11:33. > :11:40.more on this story on Sunday Politics on Sunday. Still to come,
:11:41. > :11:47.sport and the final weather forecast from a Trai. I will try to
:11:47. > :11:50.leave you with sunshine for part of the weekend.
:11:50. > :11:54.They are best friends and wonderfully natured. But guide dogs
:11:54. > :11:56.are also under attack by other dogs. And it is on the rise. But it is
:11:56. > :12:00.hoped government plans to introduce microchipping of all newborn
:12:00. > :12:03.puppies will help control the problem. Kris Lambert and her guide
:12:03. > :12:06.dog were the victims of an unprovoked attack by another dog.
:12:06. > :12:16.Kris, from Durham, finds it difficult to leave the house alone
:12:16. > :12:18.
:12:18. > :12:22.Getting her guide dog give a Kris Lambert her independence but most
:12:22. > :12:27.people take for granted. And unprovoked and sustained attack on
:12:27. > :12:32.them both by another dog in Durham city centre changed everything.
:12:32. > :12:37.cannot explain to horror. With the noise. I did not realise how bad it
:12:37. > :12:44.was until I heard myself scream. A university student came over to
:12:44. > :12:48.distract the dog long enough for my dog to retreat. But that was not
:12:48. > :12:55.before I was knocked against the shop and dried up against -- drive
:12:55. > :12:59.up the street. The next thing I remember was in man sitting on the
:12:59. > :13:03.floor next to me with my dog cradled in his arms. He said that
:13:03. > :13:07.she was badly hurt and very shocked and bleeding from a terrible wind
:13:07. > :13:13.in her head. The owner of the dog was never prosecuted. Panda has
:13:13. > :13:17.fully recovered, but the attack in 2008 has had a lasting impact on an
:13:17. > :13:22.accused man's health and confidence. She finds it difficult to leave a
:13:22. > :13:27.house on her own. The number of attacks on guide dog by other dogs
:13:27. > :13:34.is on the rise. There is now a seven every month in the UK.
:13:34. > :13:38.Between June 2010 and December 2011, there were 147 attacks. The charity,
:13:38. > :13:44.Guide Dogs for The Blind, welcomes the Government plans for her micro-
:13:44. > :13:49.chipping. But they say they do not go far enough. We want a micro-
:13:49. > :13:54.chipping of all dogs in England and Wales to be compulsory. Be want the
:13:54. > :14:01.police to take more seriously dog attacks on guide dogs and hold dog
:14:01. > :14:06.owners to account, prosecutions. And we also want the tax on guide
:14:06. > :14:13.dogs to be seen as an attack on the person. My guide dog is a tool. An
:14:13. > :14:17.attack on her is an attack on me. It should be taken as such under
:14:17. > :14:20.should be prosecutions. Animal campaigners have warned that the
:14:20. > :14:25.poppy micro-chipping plans will be difficult if not impossible to
:14:25. > :14:29.enforce. But Kris Lambert believes it would be a step in the right
:14:29. > :14:33.direction and would give her the confidence to go back out again.
:14:33. > :14:36.This weekend marks seventy years since the York Blitz. More than 80
:14:36. > :14:39.people were killed and hundreds were injured during the raid. Over
:14:39. > :14:44.250 tonnes of explosive were dropped and thousand of buildings
:14:44. > :14:54.were destroyed, including the Guildhall. This weekend, the city
:14:54. > :14:54.
:14:54. > :15:00.will remember the raid with special events and exhibitions. From high
:15:00. > :15:05.ground near the hall, I could look down over the city. The first thing
:15:05. > :15:12.that caught my eyes was the Minster, which always dominates the city
:15:12. > :15:20.anyway. It was ringed with buildings on fire.
:15:20. > :15:25.And now the sport. I'm quite excited by the football at the
:15:25. > :15:28.moment. I enjoy it went comes to a close!
:15:28. > :15:31.We'll come to our promotion play- off contenders in just a moment.
:15:31. > :15:33.For them, it's a make or break weekend. Not so for Sunderland. Or
:15:33. > :15:37.for Newcastle United. Although victory at Wigan tomorrow would
:15:37. > :15:40.take the Magpies a big step closer to Champions League football.
:15:40. > :15:43.A long-awaited return to the top table of European football would
:15:43. > :15:46.please no-one more than this man - former chairman Sir John Hall, who
:15:46. > :15:50.was at Newcastle's Mansion House today for a Lord Mayor's lunch in
:15:50. > :15:58.his honour. He's full of praise for the club's player recruitment, the
:15:58. > :16:03.manager and the owner, too. It is the boss man at the top that
:16:03. > :16:08.actually drives things and give the direction. You have to say to him,
:16:08. > :16:10.well done. You have proved us all wrong. Well done. You deserved the
:16:11. > :16:13.praise you are getting. Newcastle will find relegation-
:16:14. > :16:21.threatened Wigan a tougher nut to crack than Stoke City, but they've
:16:21. > :16:27.got their timing absolutely right. All season, or we have been in the
:16:27. > :16:36.top six. We have had our best form just that the right time. This is
:16:36. > :16:39.what it is all about. We go into a seventh game in six weeks. With
:16:39. > :16:42.Chelsea close to taking one of the four Champions League places if
:16:42. > :16:48.they beat Bayern Munich in the final, the Magpies might be well
:16:49. > :16:53.advised to finish third. It is a tricky situation that Chelsea have
:16:53. > :16:55.a realistic chance to win the Champions League. But if we finish
:16:55. > :16:58.fourth and Chelsea win at they don't get into it. But it won't
:16:58. > :17:01.happen, will it? Meanwhile, scoring goals has been a
:17:01. > :17:05.big problem for Sunderland since their 3-3 draw at Manchester City.
:17:05. > :17:08.Top scorer Seb Larsson is out for the rest of the season, so misses
:17:08. > :17:16.tomorrow's visit of Bolton. Much to ponder for the Black Cats' boss
:17:16. > :17:20.this summer. We do not have anyone in double figures. If you're going
:17:20. > :17:26.to have a successful season, will be need at least two players to be
:17:26. > :17:31.able to get into double figures. And three if you're really lucky.
:17:31. > :17:36.It is something we will try and address next season. I think over
:17:36. > :17:38.all, we should do better. Outside the Premier League, two of
:17:38. > :17:41.our teams face crunch matches tomorrow, which could determine
:17:41. > :17:45.which division they'll be in next season. Carlisle have two games
:17:45. > :17:49.left to clinch a play-off place in League One. But there's even more
:17:49. > :17:52.at stake for Middlesbrough. Last week's dramatic win over
:17:52. > :17:55.Southampton kept the Premier League dream alive for the Boro. Only a
:17:55. > :17:58.win at Watford tomorrow, coupled with defeat for Cardiff at Crystal
:17:58. > :18:08.Palace, will give them a shot at the play-offs and the chance to
:18:08. > :18:09.
:18:09. > :18:12.hold on to some of their key players. Everybody here is about
:18:13. > :18:16.the Sun's. This is one of the biggest games and the ball with
:18:16. > :18:19.figures bandied around of 90 million.
:18:19. > :18:22.If Boro don't make it, this will be the last edition of the region's
:18:22. > :18:25.longest-serving fanzine. It's been a tough product to sell in the
:18:25. > :18:34.Championship. So after more than 500 missions, spread over 24 years,
:18:34. > :18:38.Fly Me To The Moon could be entering its final countdown.
:18:38. > :18:42.hope that we succeed on Saturday and that we are in the play-offs.
:18:42. > :18:47.And then there will be another issue for Wembley! A Wembley
:18:47. > :18:51.special would be fantastic! And then the Premier League. We would
:18:51. > :18:54.definitely keep going in the Premier League. Let's hope we are
:18:54. > :18:57.still there. Carlisle are at home to second-
:18:57. > :19:00.bottom Exeter tomorrow. The Blues need both Stevenage and Notts
:19:00. > :19:08.County to slip up this weekend, and next, to make the play-offs. But
:19:08. > :19:11.they haven't given up hope. anybody thinks that Bayern Munich
:19:11. > :19:15.would be playing against Chelsea in the European Cup final? Probably
:19:15. > :19:20.not. So things can happen and did all that will surprise people. They
:19:20. > :19:23.know they have had a bit of a raw deal, not just on with the ball
:19:23. > :19:28.pitched, but things that happen to us over the last couple of weeks.
:19:28. > :19:31.We just need to crack on. We need to go out with us big excitement as
:19:31. > :19:34.we can see what happens. Elsewhere tomorrow, Hartlepool are
:19:34. > :19:37.at home to Leyton Orient. And this'll confuse you - good luck to
:19:37. > :19:40.Hetton Lyons Cricket Club from County Durham, who are a football
:19:40. > :19:44.team. They take on Canada, who are actually a team from Liverpool, in
:19:44. > :19:46.the final of the FA Sunday Cup this weekend at the Stadium of Light.
:19:46. > :19:49.Durham's cricket team aren't playing much cricket either, right
:19:49. > :19:54.now. Day two of their game at Surrey was washed out. And in reply
:19:54. > :19:57.to Yorkshire's first innings total of 247, Kent are 316-6.
:19:57. > :20:00.And if you're anywhere near Carlisle, get yourself into the
:20:00. > :20:03.city centre, because in just a few minutes' time at 7.00pm, the first
:20:03. > :20:07.cars will be heading off at the start of the Pirelli International
:20:07. > :20:10.Rally. It's one of the country's major motor sport fixtures. It's
:20:10. > :20:17.the third round of the British rally championship, and the action
:20:17. > :20:20.goes on all weekend. Well back now to our top story -
:20:20. > :20:23.the double murder in Middlesbrough and Whitby. Our Chief Reporter
:20:23. > :20:26.Chris Stewart has been following developments in the hunt for the
:20:26. > :20:36.suspect, James Allen. Chris, what else have you been able to glean
:20:36. > :20:37.
:20:37. > :20:40.about him? We know if he has probably been
:20:40. > :20:44.travelling around by bike and may well have cycled from here all the
