:00:03. > :00:07.Welcome to Monday's Look North. In tonight's headlines: Searching for

:00:07. > :00:11.Ian. Rescue workers and the public are looking for an eight-year-old

:00:11. > :00:16.boy who fell in the River Wear. Police are given more time to

:00:16. > :00:19.question James Allen - suspected of two murders and a sexual assault.

:00:19. > :00:24.500 workers across three counties fear for their jobs, as the future

:00:25. > :00:29.of a major food company is thrown into doubt.

:00:29. > :00:34.And, meet Matt. He's now half the man he was, after shedding 17

:00:34. > :00:37.stones! In sport - no promotion for Middlesbrough next season, but

:00:37. > :00:41.Carlisle are still in with a shout of making the play-offs. And we're

:00:41. > :00:51.down Wembley Way looking ahead to a big day out for three of our local

:00:51. > :00:58.

:00:58. > :01:02.A search and rescue team from Derbyshire, equipped with a special

:01:02. > :01:05.underwater camera, has joined the hunt for eight year-old Ian Bell.

:01:05. > :01:11.The youngster fell into the River Wear on Friday evening, after

:01:11. > :01:13.playing with friends. More than 50 local people have been working with

:01:13. > :01:21.the police in the search along the riverbanks, downstream from

:01:21. > :01:24.Willington, near Crook. Adrian Day four of the hunt for Ian Bell

:01:24. > :01:27.and reinforcements from Derbyshire arrived this morning to join the

:01:27. > :01:34.search. They have an underwater camera on a pole that can be used

:01:35. > :01:37.to check all the tree roots where a body might snag. The river is still

:01:38. > :01:41.in spate after the heavy rain of recent days and visibility below

:01:41. > :01:48.the surface is only possible in an area roughly a foot in diameter so

:01:48. > :01:52.it's painstaking work checking out the riverbed, foot by foot. The

:01:52. > :01:56.arrival of the search team has added a vital new tool in the

:01:56. > :01:59.search for Ian Bell. Police have praised the community effort.

:01:59. > :02:05.Nearly 100 volunteers every day have been a long the river banks

:02:05. > :02:07.trying to help find the missing boy. We would like to thank everyone for

:02:07. > :02:11.been involved and thank the community for taking part and

:02:12. > :02:20.assisting where they can. We just hope we can find Ian for their

:02:20. > :02:25.family. The feeling of being able to help in some way, there is

:02:25. > :02:32.something there that each and every person feels when a tragedy like

:02:32. > :02:36.this happens. I suppose everybody just wants to feel that they can

:02:36. > :02:39.maybe help. The search for Ian has extended downriver to Durham City

:02:39. > :02:41.and Chester-le-Street, 10 miles downstream from Willington. But the

:02:41. > :02:51.initial visual inspection of the riverbanks has drawn a blank. Now

:02:51. > :02:53.

:02:53. > :02:55.the underwater team will work their It's been one of the biggest

:02:55. > :02:58.manhunts the region has seen in recent years, stretching from

:02:58. > :03:02.Teesside in the North, across to Whitby and Scarborough on the coast,

:03:02. > :03:05.then down to Leeds - drawing in police from three forces. Double

:03:05. > :03:08.murder suspect James Allen, who was arrested yesterday in Leeds, is now

:03:08. > :03:17.in police custody in Middlesbrough. Stephanie Lloyd joins us now from

:03:17. > :03:20.Middlesbrough police headquarters Double murder suspect James Allen

:03:20. > :03:24.is being questioned by police in Middlesbrough, after being moved

:03:24. > :03:27.here from Yorkshire in the early hours. Detectives have been given

:03:27. > :03:32.more time to question the 36-year- old in connection with two murders

:03:32. > :03:37.and a sexual assault. It was a week ago today that the body of Colin

:03:37. > :03:42.Dunford was found in his house in Middlesbrough. Two days later,

:03:42. > :03:50.Julie Davison's body was found in Whitby. When police linked the

:03:50. > :03:53.deaths, it sparked a huge police James Allen was arrested in Leeds

:03:53. > :03:58.at around 7:30am on Sunday morning after an off-duty police officer

:03:58. > :04:04.saw a man fitting his description. It brought to an end a major three-

:04:04. > :04:07.day hunt involving hundreds of officers and several police forces.

:04:07. > :04:10.Allen was moved from West Yorkshire to a police station in

:04:10. > :04:12.Middlesbrough in the early hours of this morning for further

:04:12. > :04:14.questioning in connection with the murders of 81-year-old Colin

:04:14. > :04:22.Dunford in Middlesbrough and 50- year-old Julie Davison in Whitby.

:04:22. > :04:28.They'd both suffered serious head injuries. Flowers continued to be

:04:28. > :04:31.left near the home of Colin Dunford. The family of Mrs Davison released

:04:31. > :04:35.a statement, saying Julie was one of the kindest people you could

:04:35. > :04:41.ever wish to know and went out of her way to help others. She did not

:04:41. > :04:44.deserve to die in such terrible circumstances. We are so very sad

:04:44. > :04:49.that her hopes of building a new life in her home town of Whitby

:04:49. > :04:52.ended so tragically. The first appeal for James Allen was made on

:04:52. > :04:58.Thursday. Then the hunt moved to Scarborough where it emerged he'd

:04:58. > :05:03.had spent the night in a guesthouse. If he was very pleasant. An

:05:03. > :05:08.intelligent bloke. He made a lot of conversation. Just like an ordinary

:05:08. > :05:13.holiday maker. He said he was doing business on the seafront and

:05:13. > :05:16.planning some amusement arcades. You had no idea the police were

:05:16. > :05:20.seeking him in connection with the murders of two people? Not an

:05:20. > :05:24.inkling. Then CCTV images showed he'd moved on to Leeds, where he

:05:24. > :05:26.was finally arrested. The police said there was no evidence of

:05:26. > :05:34.further victims but appealed for people to check on vulnerable

:05:34. > :05:40.friends, relatives and neighbours. We are investigating two deaths,

:05:40. > :05:45.and without a doubt this is a dangerous man. I think it is

:05:45. > :05:48.prudent to ensure that everyone is safe and well. Now detectives are

:05:48. > :05:51.trying to piece together the double murder suspect's movements while he

:05:52. > :05:53.was on the run and find out whether anyone's been helping him. As the

:05:53. > :05:56.double murder investigation continues, detectives are asking

:05:56. > :05:59.people to check gardens and outbuildings for signs of anyone

:05:59. > :06:02.living rough, and to get in touch if they find any discarded clothing

:06:02. > :06:05.or footwear in the Whitby and Scarborough areas as they continue

:06:05. > :06:15.to try to piece together James Allen's movements over the past

:06:15. > :06:21.

:06:21. > :06:26.A mother and son, found shot dead in a car at a golf club in County

:06:26. > :06:29.Durham, have been named by police. The bodies of Ian Blakey, who was

:06:29. > :06:32.34, and a woman believed to be his mother, Jean Blakey, who was 55,

:06:32. > :06:34.were discovered at Crook Golf Club on Saturday morning. It's thought

:06:34. > :06:38.she was suffering from multiple sclerosis. Police aren't looking

:06:38. > :06:42.for anyone else in connection with the deaths.

:06:42. > :06:47.An 18-year old has become the second woman in a week to be

:06:47. > :06:49.sentenced for falsely claiming she'd been raped in Carlisle. The

:06:49. > :06:52.city's magistrates heard how Takara Harding told police she'd been

:06:52. > :06:58.attacked on West Walls last October during a spate of alleged sex

:06:58. > :07:01.attacks. She was given a four-month suspended sentence. Last week 20-

:07:01. > :07:03.year-old Chloe Fox also admitted lying about being raped in an alley

:07:03. > :07:11.near Warwick Road. The journalism student also received a four-month

:07:11. > :07:15.suspended term. Might detectives were actually

:07:15. > :07:20.taken off other cases and could not investigate other cases like

:07:20. > :07:23.burglaries and thefts and all the resources were actually put into

:07:23. > :07:28.addressing this investigation. That is the biggest headache, more than

:07:28. > :07:31.anything else. Also on top of that is the public perception and fear.

:07:31. > :07:36.That was a headache and we had to put out a lot of messages to

:07:36. > :07:40.reassure the public. More importantly, we had to tell people

:07:40. > :07:43.that they had to try and be safe. Hundreds of workers, at three

:07:43. > :07:46.separate seafood factories in our region, are tonight anxiously

:07:46. > :07:50.awaiting news of their fate. Young's Seafoods said in January

:07:50. > :07:52.that more than 500 jobs were at risk at sites in Seaham, in County

:07:52. > :07:55.Durham, Amble in Northumberland and Whitehaven in Cumbria. A

:07:55. > :08:01.consultation period was due to finish by now. But, as Peter Harris

:08:01. > :08:11.Its future in doubt for months, this factory has been a major

:08:11. > :08:15.employer. Few expect good news. years ago, the company was booming.

:08:15. > :08:18.They were supporting local sport, they had done everything. They have

:08:18. > :08:23.come in and joined in the community and unfortunately we are losing a

:08:23. > :08:26.good company, but sadly we are losing a lot of jobs. There are a

:08:26. > :08:32.lot of young people in their who have taken mortgages out for their

:08:32. > :08:35.new houses and I fear for them. Cumbrian Seafoods went into

:08:35. > :08:39.administration in December and its contracts taken over by its rival

:08:39. > :08:49.Young's. A review started, with the company warning 550 jobs were at

:08:49. > :08:50.

:08:50. > :08:56.risk. Still there is no word at the end of a 90-day consultation period.

:08:56. > :09:01.The company says all options are in play but it leaves more than 360

:09:01. > :09:04.jobs at risk here, and more than 100 at Whitehaven in Cumbria and

:09:04. > :09:12.another 80 in Northumberland. With the uncertainty continuing, Look

:09:12. > :09:19.North has been told some workers have already gone. We have been

:09:19. > :09:23.haemorrhaging private sector jobs throughout Easter and actually

:09:23. > :09:29.since before Christmas. It is really concerning for the people

:09:29. > :09:32.affected and for the economy of the north-east and East Durham. Young's

:09:32. > :09:39.says it can't say when any announcement on the future might

:09:39. > :09:43.come. For the workers, the wait It was a photograph on Facebook

:09:43. > :09:47.that changed his life. Matt Briggs from York weighed 31 stones putting

:09:47. > :09:51.his life in danger. He started to put weight on following the death

:09:51. > :09:56.of his mother, when he was 15. But he was so shocked by a photograph

:09:56. > :09:58.of himself, he vowed to take drastic action. Now Matt's been

:09:58. > :10:07.named Slimming World's Greatest Loser 2012 after shedding a

:10:07. > :10:16.staggering 17 and half stones. It was this unflattering picture

:10:17. > :10:23.that made Matt change his life. I knew I wasn't happy. I was getting

:10:23. > :10:26.up, going to work, going to sleep and just getting into a cycle. You

:10:26. > :10:32.have in your head what sort of size you think you are, and I had

:10:32. > :10:38.deluded myself, thinking I was about seven or eight stone smaller

:10:38. > :10:41.than I was. The Facebook photograph shocked him and inspired by his

:10:41. > :10:44.mother in law he joined a slimming class. But it was a challenge set

:10:44. > :10:49.by his father that provided the encouragement he needed. My dad

:10:49. > :10:52.gave me a bet saying that he would pay for my first 12 weeks and if I

:10:52. > :10:56.didn't lose two stone, I would have to give him the money back. Being a

:10:56. > :11:00.Yorkshireman, getting money out of him is always amazing any way and

:11:00. > :11:05.to get money without having to pay him back is even better. So the

:11:05. > :11:09.first week I went to Slimming World, and after that first week, I knew

:11:10. > :11:12.he would not see the money again. After two years of healthy food and

:11:12. > :11:19.regular exercise Matt lost a staggering 17 stone and has now

:11:20. > :11:24.being crowned Slimming World's Greatest Loser. It is the whole

:11:24. > :11:31.thing. By will be turning 30 years old and a week, and thankfully not

:11:31. > :11:35.30 stone. It is a complete 180 degree turn from where I was two

:11:35. > :11:40.years ago. A lot of my friends are dreading turning 30, but I just

:11:40. > :11:42.want to bring it on. It is a brand new start for me. For all the

:11:42. > :11:52.success and celebrations Matt has been left with one big problem.

:11:52. > :11:53.

:11:53. > :11:57.What does he do now with all his A fantastic effort. Plenty more to

:11:57. > :12:00.come in tonight's Look North: Coming up next: Celebrating Boro's

:12:00. > :12:07.spiritual home. And later, the fishnets that are bringing big

:12:07. > :12:10.money into Whitby. Weather wise we got off relatively lightly today,

:12:11. > :12:20.but joined later to find out what is in store for the next few days.

:12:21. > :12:21.

:12:21. > :12:25.Exactly 17 years ago, Middlesbrough Football Club played their final

:12:25. > :12:29.game at best some Park. To mark the occasion they have had a ceremony

:12:29. > :12:32.at the last remaining piece of the old stadium, the wall that stood at

:12:32. > :12:42.the back of the home fans' favourite terrace and was restored

:12:42. > :12:45.

:12:45. > :12:49.last year with money from The Holgate End where the most

:12:49. > :12:53.passionate of human emotions flowed, where people fell head over heels

:12:53. > :12:57.in love. The wall behind the terrace is the only bricks and

:12:57. > :13:04.mortar as left, and although the paintwork has faded, the memories

:13:04. > :13:08.never did. I only ever stood in one place, the Holgate End, so that is

:13:08. > :13:13.a nice memory. I think it is very important for the people of

:13:13. > :13:18.Middlesbrough. The older generation in particular. I could think of

:13:18. > :13:22.going there, buying a Bovril at the stand, climbing the steps and I can

:13:22. > :13:26.think of the first sights and sounds as I went over the top into

:13:26. > :13:30.the terrace. Those are the sort of memories that come surging through

:13:30. > :13:36.as I walk past the wall. commemorate the 17th anniversary of

:13:36. > :13:40.the last match here, today there was a prayer from a local priest.

:13:40. > :13:44.May the Lord bless all the gatherers here and made this remain

:13:44. > :13:51.in the hearts of so many people forever. Together with the slightly

:13:51. > :13:55.more orthodox football tradition. Anyone for Bovril? The wall was

:13:55. > :13:59.raised in the 1966 World Cup to stop local kids getting in for free.

:13:59. > :14:03.But one fact you won't read about is that part of the wall formed the

:14:03. > :14:13.back of the open-air gents urinal. It was a different era, and match

:14:13. > :14:17.days were such a different Some great memories.

:14:17. > :14:22.When you think of Whitby, and you probably thinks his side, fishing

:14:22. > :14:28.ships and maybe the TV show Heartbeat, but twice every year

:14:28. > :14:33.strange things are afoot, enough to drain the colour from your face.

:14:33. > :14:39.Bram Stoker was inspired to write Dracula when he came to Whitby in

:14:39. > :14:44.1890. His influence has turned it into a modern day Mecca for Goths.

:14:44. > :14:50.17 years ago, just 200 people came for the first ever Goth Weekend in

:14:50. > :14:56.the town. Today there are thousands. It started off as a very small

:14:56. > :15:02.event in a local pub. It has just exploded. It is very diverse. If

:15:02. > :15:06.you get under-18s with their mums and dads, you get what we call Goth

:15:06. > :15:10.spotters, you village couple coming to spot up -- soak up the

:15:10. > :15:15.atmosphere, we get a lot of costume dressers now and they can spend

:15:15. > :15:18.1,000 on an active. For them it is all about promenading. Fishing used

:15:18. > :15:23.to be the major industry for Whitby but now they say the fishnet

:15:23. > :15:30.stockings worn by the Goths brings a far more -- brings in far more

:15:30. > :15:35.cash than the fishing net themselves. Whitby is based on

:15:35. > :15:43.tourism now. 25 % of the people work in tourism and therefore shops,

:15:43. > :15:47.cafes, restaurants are all busy and grit. It is fantastic. And with two

:15:47. > :15:51.Goth Weekends taking place here annually, that means more than 1

:15:51. > :15:56.million are injected into Whitby's economy each year, so if you missed

:15:56. > :16:02.this one it is -- there is a second chance to get Gothic at the next

:16:02. > :16:05.event, over Halloween. Nothing quite so frightening now,

:16:05. > :16:12.unless you're a Newcastle United fan, because it is time for

:16:12. > :16:16.Teamtalk. Lots to get through tonight. Not

:16:16. > :16:20.least the shocking end to the Magpies' six-match winning streak

:16:21. > :16:25.at Wigan. Wigan had meat and Liverpool, Arsenal and Manchester

:16:25. > :16:29.United in recent weeks so they were always going to be tricky. But no

:16:29. > :16:34.one bought it would be 4-0. An astonishing result when you think

:16:34. > :16:39.again hacked scored just 15 goals in front of their home fans this

:16:39. > :16:44.season. But they have played some good football this season. Roberto

:16:44. > :16:48.Di Matteo has done a good job. When you are fighting for your Premier

:16:48. > :16:56.League lives it is difficult for Newcastle to match Basil de passion.

:16:56. > :17:01.There certainly did turn on some fantastic stuff in the half --

:17:01. > :17:08.first half, Wigan. When you get a goal like that your heart must sink

:17:08. > :17:12.but Newcastle, to be fair to them... Look at the fans at half-time. This

:17:12. > :17:19.young lad is obvious is saying, Dad, can it get any worse in the second

:17:19. > :17:27.half? They did get better in the second half. CSA on another day

:17:27. > :17:31.would have put some of those in. -- cypresses say. The strange thing is,

:17:31. > :17:35.it is not the first time they had been thumped the season. They have

:17:35. > :17:39.not lost too many. They still write up there, there, which may be says

:17:39. > :17:44.something for the character of the team. But that will be tested to

:17:44. > :17:46.the fore at Chelsea on Wednesday night. Away from the Premier League,

:17:46. > :17:50.Middlesbrough did not making to the Championship play-offs but there

:17:50. > :17:54.was still has plenty to celebrate last night at end-of-season awards.

:17:54. > :17:57.Goalkeeper Jason Steele won the Young Player award and Rhys

:17:57. > :18:01.Williams picked up the trophy for the players' player. Barry Robson,

:18:01. > :18:05.now off to join Vancouver Whitecaps in character, was Player of the

:18:05. > :18:09.Year. There was also an emotional speech by manager Tony Mowbray. He

:18:09. > :18:18.was so disappointed they did not make it. There were a few Seabridge

:18:18. > :18:22.euros needed at Watford. Sadly, Scott Loach was a super hero. Boro

:18:22. > :18:25.had to win and Cardiff had to lose at Crystal Palace for the

:18:25. > :18:28.Teessiders to finish in the top six but Oddie came from behind to pick

:18:28. > :18:35.up the points that meant that whatever Boro did they could not

:18:35. > :18:39.catch up. Barry Robson said in this one up for Martin Emnes. But what

:18:39. > :18:43.that pitched been Burnett later on. Not Brayshaw what Stephen Moffit is

:18:43. > :18:47.going to do with a panda in pink pyjamas but there you go. The boss

:18:47. > :18:52.was magnanimous in defeat. thought we played well enough to

:18:52. > :18:58.get a result. The bigger picture, we have to congratulate Cardiff. I

:18:58. > :19:04.got the job done. That is what they needed to done today. We have to

:19:04. > :19:07.brush ourselves down and get ready to go again next season.

:19:07. > :19:13.A mite Boro Carlisle could still make the play-offs in League 1 but

:19:13. > :19:18.they will have to win at Oldham next week. And Hague Stevenage and

:19:18. > :19:22.Notts County slip up. These are actually Exeter fans before the

:19:22. > :19:25.game at Brunton Park. Carlisle hacked to win this one to keep in

:19:25. > :19:28.the play-off chase. Francois Zoko put them ahead. What about this

:19:28. > :19:36.very fabulous finish from Jordan Cook on loan from Sunderland? This

:19:36. > :19:39.sort of game, poll, that might make Martin O'Neill take notice. Liam

:19:39. > :19:43.Noble, a former Sunderland midfielder, had his Twitter account

:19:43. > :19:48.closed by the club last week after four-letter comments about Black

:19:48. > :19:53.Cats and their fans. The FA are investigating. If Francois Zoko's

:19:53. > :19:59.agent has a video of his best gulls on YouTube. I do not think he will

:19:59. > :20:09.have this one on quite yet. On to the teams with only a final

:20:09. > :20:10.

:20:10. > :20:15.place to play for. Sunderland, 77 hours without -- seven hours of
