:00:06. > :00:10.Welcome to Look North. Tonight, James Allen appears in court. As

:00:10. > :00:13.well as two murders, he is charged with a number of other serious

:00:13. > :00:17.offences. Also tonight, a royal opening for

:00:18. > :00:21.the new unit which puts one hospital at the forefront of cancer

:00:21. > :00:26.treatment nationwide. And the woman who is determined

:00:26. > :00:30.that cancer will not stop her carry ing the Olympic Torch. It is going

:00:30. > :00:36.to be an emotional day, not just for me, but a lot of people that

:00:36. > :00:40.have been here for me. Plus a promise from one of water

:00:40. > :00:42.companies that, however much the drought-hit south wants our water,

:00:42. > :00:46.customers here will always come first.

:00:47. > :00:51.In sport, there is the Champions' League place on the line as

:00:51. > :00:54.Newcastle United play Chelsea. And we are live from what could be

:00:54. > :00:59.Darlington's new ground. And we will meet that former

:00:59. > :01:07.Olympic medallist who is hoping a revived road race will be a runaway

:01:07. > :01:14.He was the subject of a four-day nationwide manhunt involving 100

:01:14. > :01:17.police officers. But today, 36- year-old James Allen made his first

:01:17. > :01:22.appearance in court after being charged with murdering 81-year-old

:01:22. > :01:26.Colin Dunford in Middlesbrough and 50-year-old Julie Davison in Whitby.

:01:27. > :01:32.During his brief court appearance, he made an obscene gesture at

:01:32. > :01:39.magistrates. Mr Allen also faced four other charges, including rape

:01:39. > :01:41.and false imprisonment. After three days of questioning by

:01:41. > :01:45.detectives, James Allen arrived at court this morning charged with

:01:45. > :01:49.murdering two people in their homes. Arrested following a manhunt

:01:49. > :01:52.involving three separate police forces and 100 officers, he was

:01:52. > :01:58.discovered in Leeds early Sunday morning by an off-duty police

:01:58. > :02:01.officer. He has been charged with killing 81-year-old Colin Dunford

:02:01. > :02:05.in Middlesbrough and 50-year-old Julie Davison at her flat in Whitby.

:02:05. > :02:08.They were both found dead last week. Both suffered -- both suffered

:02:08. > :02:14.serious head injuries. The brief hearing lasted less than

:02:14. > :02:18.five minutes. Mr Allen came into court have Cook -- came into court

:02:18. > :02:23.handcuffed to a security guard, speaking only once to confirm his

:02:23. > :02:28.name and date of birth. He faces four other charges of assault, rape,

:02:29. > :02:32.also imprisonment and witness intimidation. As he left court, he

:02:32. > :02:36.directed an obscene gesture to the magistrate.

:02:36. > :02:40.Because of the serious nature of the charges, the case has now been

:02:40. > :02:43.transferred to Teesside Crown Court, where he will appear tomorrow. As

:02:43. > :02:47.James Allen was leaving court, detectives investigating the murder

:02:47. > :02:50.of Julie Davison launched an appeal to find her silver and black

:02:50. > :03:00.Toshiba laptop computer, which is missing from her home. It was, they

:03:00. > :03:02.

:03:02. > :03:06.said, extremely important that it Parts of it have been likened to a

:03:06. > :03:11.hotel lounge rather than a hospital waiting room. A major new cancer

:03:11. > :03:15.treatment centre has opened at the James Cook Hospital in

:03:15. > :03:19.Middlesbrough, equipped with the latest technology and designed to

:03:19. > :03:24.put patients at ease, part of a 35 million expansion that means the

:03:25. > :03:29.hospital has now amongst the best in Europe for cancer treatment.

:03:29. > :03:35.Impressive Endeavour unit is attracting patients, staff and now

:03:35. > :03:39.royalty. Princess Alexandra, the Queen's cousin, took a course and

:03:39. > :03:44.nursing before she started to undertake official engagements. Her

:03:44. > :03:49.two interests collided today as she opened the new cancer centre at

:03:49. > :03:52.James Cook Hospital. It comes equipped with an advanced CT

:03:52. > :03:59.scanner and the latest radio therapy technology, making

:04:00. > :04:05.treatment more safe, accurate and effective. Tumours are not square

:04:05. > :04:10.and rectangular, but are oddly shaped, so we have equipment that

:04:10. > :04:15.can follow the shape of tumours, so we can spare surrounding normal

:04:15. > :04:20.tissue. That means less side- effects. And treatment should be

:04:20. > :04:24.less debilitating and patients should recover better. That is the

:04:24. > :04:29.clinical side. What about the emotional?

:04:29. > :04:32.As soon as you walk through the door, you see grass and trees, the

:04:32. > :04:36.idea being to bring outside inside and make patients feel as

:04:36. > :04:40.comfortable as possible going through one of the most traumatic

:04:40. > :04:45.experiences of their life. We have looked at the psychology of this,

:04:45. > :04:51.with colours that have positive effects. We have teachers ceilings

:04:51. > :04:55.where it is local scenery that people can see, places the patients

:04:55. > :04:59.should recognise. -- we have featured ceilings. When our

:04:59. > :05:04.patients walks into one of the treatment rooms, they cannot see

:05:04. > :05:10.equipment. The door or shut quietly, so patients do not feeling closed.

:05:10. > :05:20.It does not make me feel like a patient, but a human being,

:05:20. > :05:24.

:05:24. > :05:27.A man has been charged with conspiracy to commit burglary

:05:27. > :05:31.following a break-in at Durham's Oriental Museum last month.

:05:31. > :05:35.Workless smashed a hole in the wall of the museum and stole two

:05:35. > :05:39.artefacts worth more than 2 million. They were later recovered

:05:39. > :05:44.by police. Lee Wildman appeared before Peterlee Magistrates this

:05:44. > :05:47.afternoon and was remanded in custody for a week. Another man and

:05:47. > :05:50.two women are still being questioned.

:05:50. > :05:54.Plans for a 4 million conference centre on the shores of Windermere

:05:54. > :05:58.have been given the go ahead. The largely glass structure will be

:05:58. > :06:01.built on the site of the Low Wood Watersports Centre. Around 600

:06:02. > :06:05.people can be accommodated in the two-storey drum-shaped building.

:06:05. > :06:09.The group, the Friends of the Lake District, said it was not

:06:09. > :06:14.appropriate, but it was approved by planners today.

:06:14. > :06:17.With a little over 12 hours to go until the polls open, do not be

:06:17. > :06:23.surprised if you get and knock on the door from a politician this

:06:23. > :06:27.evening. Around 200 seats in 10 councils are up for grabs. Labour

:06:27. > :06:31.wants voters to punish the coalition parties for taking us

:06:31. > :06:35.into recession. But one Cabinet Minister believes the North are

:06:35. > :06:40.showing signs of revival. At this time of year, politicians

:06:40. > :06:43.and no stranger to doors, but not usually this out. This Carlisle

:06:43. > :06:48.factory makes them on an industrial scale and does well selling them

:06:48. > :06:52.abroad. No wonder a cabinet Minister was keen to visit. With so

:06:52. > :06:56.much economic gloom around, voters might be tempted to show

:06:56. > :06:58.Conservative councillors at different kind of door. But Michael

:06:58. > :07:03.Gove believe his party deserves credit for preventing an even

:07:03. > :07:07.bigger crisis. We need to keep interest rates low, so that

:07:07. > :07:13.businesses like this can go off. Problems like route -- problems in

:07:13. > :07:17.Europe and elsewhere are holding us. But we have to back entrepreneurs,

:07:17. > :07:21.back investment in education, which this company exemplify is, what the

:07:21. > :07:25.Government is backing and what Labour is attacking. The Liberal

:07:25. > :07:29.Democrats have also had to defend coalition policies. For these

:07:29. > :07:34.elections, the wants to put the message across to be bought for

:07:34. > :07:41.them. The difference we have made in Government has been as a Liberal

:07:41. > :07:45.Democrat. -- to vote for them. some parts of the UK, the

:07:45. > :07:49.Conservatives than an endangered species. People will vote for the

:07:49. > :07:52.Liberal Democrats, because the care about the problems ordinary working

:07:52. > :07:56.people are facing in these difficult and Ince. For Labour,

:07:56. > :08:01.there seems to be a ready-made chance to capitalise on the

:08:02. > :08:06.coalition's problems. But the party insists they are also positive

:08:06. > :08:09.reasons to vote for the councillors. Labour has a positive message

:08:09. > :08:13.across the North East. On crime, jobs and housing, Labour

:08:13. > :08:18.councillors make a difference, not just protecting from a Conservative

:08:18. > :08:23.Government, but my aching a positive change the people's lives.

:08:23. > :08:28.From tomorrow, politicians will be abandoning doors of any kind to

:08:28. > :08:31.await their fate when polls open at seven in the morning.

:08:31. > :08:35.Police Federation members in Cumbria say they will not leave the

:08:36. > :08:40.country bombed -- weed the county vulnerable to crime went up to 100

:08:40. > :08:43.travel to London for a protest march next week. Officers from the

:08:43. > :08:46.region are expected to join colleagues from across the country

:08:46. > :08:51.opposing proposed changes to pay and conditions. The federation says

:08:51. > :08:55.it will not affect their crime- fighting capacity. A Cumbrian

:08:55. > :09:01.service will not be affected. Everyone attending the match are

:09:01. > :09:05.doing so in their own time. -- attending the match. That could be

:09:05. > :09:10.taking rest days or annual leave. The functions will be total the

:09:10. > :09:14.unaffected. It was built with the Premier

:09:14. > :09:20.League in mind. A purpose-built stadium to house Darlington as the

:09:20. > :09:24.club surged towards football's top tyre. Now as it plunges down the

:09:24. > :09:29.League Pyramid in to the ranks of the part-timers, the club plans to

:09:29. > :09:33.leave the 25,000 seater arena on the edge of time and could ground-

:09:33. > :09:41.share with another non-League team. -- on the edge of town. Keith

:09:41. > :09:47.Akehurst is at one place it could I am in one of three of four

:09:47. > :09:51.grounds Darlington could sheer next season. -- could be sharing next

:09:51. > :09:57.year. It offered a bright future. A

:09:57. > :10:00.promise of top-quality football, possibly in the world's top league,

:10:00. > :10:06.but the arena has become a financial millstone for Darlington,

:10:06. > :10:11.dragging it down the leagues. Hindsight is wonderful. It is easy

:10:12. > :10:15.now to say it was folly. At the time, George Reynolds save

:10:15. > :10:20.Darlington Football Club from administration, built the stadium.

:10:20. > :10:26.A lot of people said it was great, welcoming it, but it has proved to

:10:27. > :10:30.be Darlington Football Club's downfall. This is one of the places

:10:30. > :10:38.the group trying to save Darlington is considering ground-sharing next

:10:38. > :10:46.season. It has a main stand and dug out. The directors' box as portable.

:10:46. > :10:50.No executive boxes here. We have to suit what we have. We have

:10:50. > :10:54.resources and hearts and minds and have to put something to them that

:10:54. > :10:59.means we will be in business as Darlington for many years and stop

:10:59. > :11:06.this regular peak and trough of going out of business. For the

:11:06. > :11:12.stadium, it could be a financial windfall. I am shocked and amazed,

:11:12. > :11:18.to tell you the truth. If we can help them out in any way, we

:11:18. > :11:22.certainly will. We have helped other teams in previous years. The

:11:22. > :11:27.fans have to realise that, if Darlington comes here, we will do

:11:27. > :11:32.what we can, but it will not be the arena. Where Darlington actually

:11:32. > :11:36.play next season could depend on which leak they are playing in. The

:11:36. > :11:41.Football Association could still do more than father as punishment for

:11:41. > :11:46.going bust so many times. -- which League.

:11:46. > :11:52.I am joined by the Secretary of this football club. What difference

:11:52. > :11:58.will it make for this football club if Darlington come here?

:11:58. > :12:02.Darlington were to come, that is a big question. Yes, perhaps we would

:12:02. > :12:11.have some benefits that would allow us to do things which we have not

:12:11. > :12:16.been able to do, because of shortage of finances. It would have

:12:16. > :12:24.some positive benefits. You have shared grounds before, with Bishop

:12:24. > :12:28.Auckland, and that went well? point. We had some problems, as you

:12:28. > :12:34.do when you are trying to get games and competitions gone, but all in

:12:34. > :12:38.all, it will end well. So it is something you could seriously do?

:12:38. > :12:45.Yes. We need to find out what is happening with Darlington and at

:12:45. > :12:49.what level. And what League. Then we take it from there, because

:12:49. > :12:56.there will be some ground improvements that need to be done

:12:56. > :13:00.to meet their level of football. We will just have to wait and see.

:13:00. > :13:03.Thank you very much. This all depends on the group hoping to save

:13:03. > :13:08.Darlington getting the finances together to take control of the

:13:08. > :13:11.club. We have heard in the last few minutes that Darlington is on the

:13:11. > :13:15.verge of liquidation yet again because up land creditors meeting

:13:15. > :13:20.on Friday has been cancelled and the fans' group have until noon

:13:20. > :13:24.tomorrow to come up with the money. If not, the liquidator -- the

:13:24. > :13:27.administrator says it plans to liquidate the club. Back to the

:13:27. > :13:30.studio. Plenty more to come, including the

:13:31. > :13:34.sport, and we found out why a former Olympic medal winning

:13:34. > :13:40.marathon runner was getting beaten by a bunch of school children.

:13:40. > :13:50.And what does the weather hold? After look ahead at the end of the

:13:50. > :13:56.

:13:56. > :14:02.One of a region's water companies has guaranteed at supplies Endon

:14:02. > :14:06.North East will come first even after it out continues down south.

:14:06. > :14:11.There are warnings that another dry winter could mean water

:14:11. > :14:14.restrictions and much of England. But Northumbrian Water say that

:14:14. > :14:22.even if they are asked to supply other areas their customers will

:14:22. > :14:25.still come first. There may be warnings of floods and rainfall

:14:25. > :14:31.records being broken but another dry winter means much of England

:14:31. > :14:39.will suffer as Severe drought again. Drastic measures would then need to

:14:39. > :14:47.be taken. The or it is too early to tell yet.

:14:47. > :14:51.But if we have another dry winter that becomes more likely.

:14:51. > :14:53.Reservoirs are full in our region but if it out elsewhere becomes a

:14:54. > :15:02.long tour problem then the rest of the country could be knocking on

:15:02. > :15:09.our door asking for supplies. The last crisis, in 1995, meant 1,000

:15:09. > :15:15.tankers a day it going from the North East to Yorkshire.

:15:15. > :15:20.Ultimately, if there is a crisis, people will take the water. There

:15:20. > :15:29.is a need to export so much water to the south. I do not think the

:15:29. > :15:35.people of the North can just say, it is ours, you are not having it.

:15:35. > :15:40.I would reassure our customers and the North East England but whatever

:15:40. > :15:44.happens there supplies will be guaranteed and safeguarded.

:15:44. > :15:51.The company says a pipe network transporting water simply is not

:15:51. > :15:55.feasible. So whilst we might be sick of the Reina rate now perhaps

:15:55. > :16:01.we need to hope for more of it if we are not to see water tankers

:16:01. > :16:11.back on the road next summer. -- set off the rain. You can see more

:16:11. > :16:14.

:16:14. > :16:24.of that story on an inside out And you can visit a Facebook page

:16:24. > :16:24.

:16:24. > :16:32.She has been told that it is likely cancer will take her life but one

:16:32. > :16:37.county Durham Women is determined to carry the Olympic torch. Two

:16:38. > :16:44.years ago Mandi Welsh was left with scars from skin cancer on her face.

:16:44. > :16:52.She is hoping to recover in time to help carry the torch. A 6 1/2 hour

:16:52. > :16:58.operation. 100 stitches. And all 26 lymph nodes removed from the neck.

:16:58. > :17:04.At just 40 T years old, Mandi Welsh does not know how much longer she

:17:04. > :17:09.has to live. You can see the scar running up

:17:09. > :17:15.behind my ear. This gives me longer with my family. If it meant going

:17:15. > :17:22.through that for them, then it had to be done.

:17:22. > :17:26.She already had cancer on her face two years ago. That left a scar. At

:17:26. > :17:36.the time she was touring the region's schools warming at the

:17:36. > :17:36.

:17:36. > :17:41.potential dangers of sunbeds. That led to her work as an

:17:41. > :17:49.ambassador for cancer research UK. She is now hoping to build up

:17:49. > :17:53.enough strength to walk the few hundred yards holding the flame.

:17:53. > :17:57.Even if I need a walking stick I will do it without everybody else's

:17:57. > :18:07.help. It will be one way of saying to cancer, you cannot stop me

:18:07. > :18:12.carrying the torch. The cancer is classed as Stage 3.

:18:12. > :18:17.Malignant melanoma. Skin cancer which has advanced to the lymph

:18:17. > :18:24.nodes. Doctors say that if it returns again it will be in an

:18:24. > :18:29.organ. It is so unpredictable, who knows.

:18:29. > :18:33.I could have another 10 years. I do not make plans for the future.

:18:33. > :18:40.Until I am told that there is no hope I will carry on and I will

:18:41. > :18:47.fight it. It will be an emotional day. Not

:18:47. > :18:51.just for me, but for lots of people who have been here for me. I will

:18:51. > :18:59.be carrying this torch for everybody that has lost the fight

:18:59. > :19:03.against cancer and everybody that continues to fight it.

:19:03. > :19:08.One a brave woman. You can see full coverage of the Olympic torch

:19:08. > :19:18.journeying through our region of four on Look North. We will track

:19:18. > :19:22.

:19:22. > :19:27.its progress. It will be quite an Two back football matches tonight.

:19:27. > :19:34.Newcastle United are chasing a Champions League spot. If they win

:19:34. > :19:38.at Chelsea -- if Chelsea win the Champions' League then allow the

:19:38. > :19:43.top three seeds in the Premiership will qualify for the premier

:19:43. > :19:47.Continental competition. Bobby Robson took Newcastle further than

:19:47. > :19:52.ever in the Champions' League so he would have loved the way this

:19:52. > :19:56.season has gone. Some of his old players along with a few familiar

:19:56. > :20:04.faces from Middlesbrough and Sunderland were taking part at a

:20:04. > :20:12.second annual golf day in aid of support a's Cancer Foundation. --

:20:12. > :20:18.the Sir Bobby Robson Cancer Foundation.

:20:18. > :20:27.Newcastle are on a roll now. It will be very tough but even a draw

:20:27. > :20:37.Addict son of Champions League football would be fantastic at St

:20:37. > :20:39.

:20:39. > :20:43.James' Park. -- a return. Chelsea were victorious back in

:20:43. > :20:48.December but it might have been different if this air Li'l Carter

:20:48. > :20:57.was a red card instead. And despite the thumping at White in the

:20:57. > :21:02.manager remains upbeat. -- Wigan. To be a point above Chelsea and

:21:03. > :21:07.level with spas at this stage in the season is out standing. We

:21:07. > :21:11.apologise to our fans for a poor 45 minutes but the bottom line is that

:21:11. > :21:18.there is still three games and everything to play for. We're

:21:18. > :21:23.absolutely delighted and will give it our best shot.

:21:23. > :21:33.On the BBC Radio York you can hear a full commentary of the York City

:21:33. > :21:34.

:21:34. > :21:44.We have been talking about London 2012 plenty this week. But we will

:21:44. > :21:50.not see squash at the Games. You may not recognise this man but he

:21:50. > :21:55.is a Yorkshireman, James Willstrop, the current world No. 1. He played

:21:55. > :21:59.an exhibition match year and met some members of a thriving junior

:21:59. > :22:07.club. But what a difference it would make to his sport profile if

:22:07. > :22:11.it could achieve Olympic status. You cannot only imagine what would

:22:11. > :22:18.happen if the top players in this country had chances to win the

:22:18. > :22:24.medals at London. What a prospect for Oz as a sport. And the profile

:22:24. > :22:30.of the game would just skyrocket. That is a very regretful situation

:22:30. > :22:34.for us. The marathon of the North takes

:22:34. > :22:39.place this weekend. And running enthusiasts have another date for

:22:39. > :22:45.their diary - 15th July. It will see the revival of a road race

:22:45. > :22:48.which was once a large community event from the 1920s until the
