:00:14. > :00:19.children are winched to safety from a swollen river.

:00:19. > :00:25.Runners range as a ten K challenge is cancelled because of rain.

:00:25. > :00:30.Competitors claim the whole event was a shambles. It was chaos, and a

:00:30. > :00:35.lot of annoyed people because it was 25 to enter. To turn up and stand

:00:35. > :00:38.in the rain. Bus travellers face an unusual

:00:38. > :00:42.challenge to encourage them to better understand bitterly impaired

:00:42. > :00:45.passengers. And crowds turned out in their

:00:45. > :00:53.thousands for the 25th Sunderland International Airshow.

:00:53. > :00:58.In sport, Newcastle have another offer rejected, while CC prepares

:00:58. > :01:08.for his preseason debut. And Crystal and Sun is sweating after another

:01:08. > :01:13.

:01:13. > :01:17.disappointing performance at the warning to stay away from swollen

:01:17. > :01:21.rivers, after a woman and two children had to be winched 100 feet

:01:21. > :01:25.to safety when they became trapped by rising waters in North Yorkshire.

:01:25. > :01:28.The group were clinging to a tree stump on an island in the River Ure

:01:28. > :01:32.at Grewelthorpe near Ripon. RAF pilots said the rescue was "as

:01:32. > :01:36.difficult as they get". Later the same helicopter was sent to rescue a

:01:36. > :01:46.man who'd fallen overboard from his boat, two miles off the Scarborough

:01:46. > :01:48.

:01:48. > :01:54.coast. It's July, but this river is practically in full spate, a result

:01:54. > :02:02.of the weekend's heavy rain. Nearly a month's worth fail in 24 hours,

:02:02. > :02:07.and this was the result. Steady. The height is good. A dramatic rescue of

:02:07. > :02:12.a woman and her two daughters, caught out at the river rose. You

:02:12. > :02:18.can see that distal ones in the arms of their rescuer. The survivors were

:02:18. > :02:24.above the level of the water on a small island. Normally we would only

:02:24. > :02:30.winched to people at a time, but we got them on board, major they were

:02:30. > :02:38.well, they settled down quickly, and then be redeployed the winchman to

:02:38. > :02:42.rescue the mother. All three were checked by medics and went home. To

:02:42. > :02:46.say this site is inaccessible is putting it mildly. It is a steep

:02:46. > :02:50.half hour walk to the nearest road, and looking at the height of the

:02:50. > :02:55.trees, it is amazing FA Cup could get down into the steering to do the

:02:55. > :03:00.rescue. As for the river itself, it is usually an easy paddle and

:03:00. > :03:06.scrambled to the island, but that rain came down the river and

:03:06. > :03:08.transformed it into this current you can see now. The levels have dropped

:03:08. > :03:14.considerably since trapping the family, at the river is still

:03:14. > :03:19.dangerous. It is something for the public to feed from this incident,

:03:19. > :03:24.how quickly the river can change from what may look inviting and

:03:24. > :03:30.benign to a raging current in a matter of minutes. There has been

:03:30. > :03:35.very heavy rainfall in the hills further up the Dales before the

:03:36. > :03:40.incident. The continuing rainfall is still pouring off the hills into the

:03:40. > :03:50.river system, making current rapid and levels of unpredictable. Rescue

:03:50. > :03:54.

:03:54. > :03:59.services warned, take care. A Hartlepool man has been remembered

:03:59. > :04:03.with custody, charged with manslaughter. Paul Nash has been

:04:04. > :04:10.charged over the death of Andrew Simon. Simon died following a fire

:04:10. > :04:14.at his home on Devon Street. A large crane which caught fire beside the

:04:14. > :04:20.A66 near Penrith is being removed this evening. There were delays

:04:20. > :04:24.yesterday, with the road closed in both directions after the fire. One

:04:24. > :04:28.name is currently closed westbound rather crane is removed.

:04:28. > :04:35.There will be more nurses on the wards of North Comriehospitals after

:04:35. > :04:39.a report criticised patient care at Carlisle and Whitehaven. Some senior

:04:39. > :04:46.nurses will return to the core nursing team, with a consultation

:04:46. > :04:49.period under way. The changes will be introduced in October.

:04:49. > :04:55.1000 athletes all trying to win a medal or the first ever Norse

:04:55. > :05:00.challenge, a ten kilometre extreme obstacle in during Thrace in

:05:00. > :05:05.Northumberland, but the race didn't even get underway. Entrants told us

:05:05. > :05:12.the event was a complete shambles. Organisers say it was because of

:05:12. > :05:17.safety concerns and heavy rain. All smiles despite the rain, 1000

:05:17. > :05:22.runners, but these pictures would be the only ones taken by the race

:05:22. > :05:26.photographer, because the hours later, the event was abandoned, an

:05:26. > :05:32.event which included obstacle such as barbed wire, giant hay bales and

:05:32. > :05:36.a water slide. The obstacles wouldn't have begun there. Racers

:05:36. > :05:42.who contacted us say the first obstacle they faced was trying to

:05:42. > :05:46.find the start line. They say the organisation was so shambolic that

:05:46. > :05:50.the marshals couldn't even tell them that much. So all trained up and

:05:50. > :05:57.nowhere to run. People like Sophie had an even more fundamental

:05:57. > :06:03.problem. She couldn't even find a Marshall. Utter chaos. A lot of

:06:03. > :06:09.annoyed people, because it was 25 to enter to turn up and stand in the

:06:09. > :06:13.rain. One of the organisers is a full-time amylin striver and a keen

:06:14. > :06:18.runner. He insists it was called off for one main reason, the fear that

:06:18. > :06:23.runners could suffer hypothermia as the rain came down. He did hint

:06:23. > :06:28.there was something else. We are saying the weather but there were

:06:28. > :06:31.other issues that will be looked into, but we took the decision

:06:31. > :06:36.because of the weather to cancel that competition on the day. What

:06:36. > :06:43.were the other issues? We will look into those in the future. What are

:06:43. > :06:48.they? There was a feud, but all I can say is that we will look into

:06:48. > :06:54.them. We laughed it off at the end of the day, but two girls from our

:06:54. > :07:01.team came from Derby, which is a lot of money, so it was meant to be a

:07:01. > :07:06.fun day out and it wasn't, it was an absolute nightmare. We are as

:07:06. > :07:11.disappointed as anybody. We put a lot of hard work in and it was with

:07:11. > :07:14.a lot of regret that we cancelled it. Refunds should be available and

:07:15. > :07:19.a new date is being organised for those who still want to do the

:07:19. > :07:23.event. Sophie says that doesn't include her.

:07:23. > :07:29.You can find out what people are saying about the race that wasn't on

:07:29. > :07:34.our Facebook page. A number of north-east striver 's

:07:34. > :07:38.face an unusual challenge when they shop -- they swapped places with

:07:38. > :07:42.blind and partially sighted people in support of a new campaign from

:07:42. > :07:46.the Royal National is a treat of blind people when it's discovered

:07:46. > :07:51.how many of its members struggle when using public transport. The

:07:51. > :07:58.charity is calling on bass tribe is to remember, "stop for me, speak for

:07:58. > :08:01.me -- speak to me. " Hopping on a bus is something many of us take for

:08:01. > :08:09.-- take for granted, but for a blind or vision impaired passengers, there

:08:09. > :08:15.are challenges. I can't see the bus coming, so my number one thing is to

:08:15. > :08:22.make sure it stops. Buses are a lifeline for blind and partially

:08:22. > :08:25.sighted people, but a recent survey by RNIB found that nine out of ten

:08:25. > :08:31.people say they can't see an approaching bust in time to heal it,

:08:31. > :08:35.and eight in ten say they missed the bus they want. If you are at the bus

:08:35. > :08:39.stop and you can't tell if its a bus, lorry or a fire engine coming

:08:39. > :08:45.live alone what number it is, it becomes difficult for people like

:08:45. > :08:51.us. People say to bus they have had one or two good experiences but

:08:51. > :08:54.plenty of bad experiences. We're not asking for a huge changes, but some

:08:54. > :09:00.basic changes in driver attitude and behaviour, and improved driver

:09:00. > :09:05.training to make that happen. drivers and managing director of a

:09:05. > :09:11.Riva Nick Knox experienced what it is like for passengers with sight

:09:11. > :09:17.loss to board a bus. I didn't think about how listening to people is

:09:17. > :09:23.difficult it is all the noises around you are much more acute, so

:09:23. > :09:26.it is difficult to concentrate on one person. What would be amazing is

:09:26. > :09:31.that all these companies could install audiovisual announcements on

:09:31. > :09:36.buses. This would give people like myself the independence to travel

:09:36. > :09:40.anywhere on a bus, safely and independently. The RNIB hopes all

:09:40. > :09:49.bus companies will get on board and train their drivers so they know

:09:49. > :09:55.what kind of help they should offer. Every second counts when people are

:09:55. > :09:59.missing or get injured. Locating people so they can be rescued and if

:09:59. > :10:05.they require taken to hospital is often a difficult task, especially

:10:05. > :10:12.in the Lake District. As with so many things, there could be a new

:10:12. > :10:20.technology solution. A drone, and unmanned multi-controlled aircraft,

:10:20. > :10:26.is now being tested to see how effective the idea might be.

:10:26. > :10:32.When recovering a T, speed is of the essence in the Lake District, so for

:10:32. > :10:35.the Mountain rescue team, and I in the sky can be helpful. This is the

:10:35. > :10:40.unmanned aircraft developed by the University of Central Lancashire,

:10:40. > :10:46.which is being tested by mountain rescue volunteers. I am about to go

:10:47. > :10:51.and hide on the fellside, and the guys will put up to unmanned drones

:10:51. > :10:55.that will see whether they can locate me. Images will be beamed to

:10:55. > :11:03.people who were watching, all over the world, actually, and then see if

:11:03. > :11:07.they can spot for IM. These things can scale eight or ten square

:11:07. > :11:11.kilometres in about ten minutes. We have been looking at images, the

:11:11. > :11:16.public have tagged images, identified were there might be

:11:16. > :11:22.people on the fells, we have had three or 4000 spots in the last ten

:11:22. > :11:26.minutes. That will help the team looking for people who are missing.

:11:26. > :11:31.Testing the drone is expected to continue in order to see how it

:11:31. > :11:39.copes in bad weather and at night, so it could be many years before it

:11:39. > :11:43.is adopted by mountain rescue teams. Plenty more to come tonight. Dot is

:11:43. > :11:48.here with the sport and the latest from our clubs, and the music and

:11:48. > :11:52.entertainment world throughout for a little girl left without her mum and

:11:52. > :11:58.sister after a car crash. And after a mixed weekend

:11:58. > :12:07.weather-wise, it stays volatile but warm over the coming days. Join me

:12:07. > :12:13.later for the full array. Richard Branson's virgin money,

:12:13. > :12:18.which bought Northern Rock last year, has donated 500,000 to the

:12:18. > :12:22.charitable arm of the bank. Business has returned to a position of

:12:22. > :12:26.profitable trading on a monthly basis, so virgin money decided to

:12:26. > :12:31.make the gesture to the Northern Rock foundation, which helps

:12:31. > :12:35.vulnerable people in the north-east and Cumbria.

:12:35. > :12:39.Two commemorative postboxes which mark the success of our athletes at

:12:39. > :12:44.the Olympics and Paralympics will remain cold. The post box in Jarrow

:12:44. > :12:51.has had a threat coast of gold paint, and a plaque detailing his

:12:51. > :12:58.achievements. Team GB won the men's 400 metres freestyle swimming event,

:12:58. > :13:01.and this post racks -- this postbox in bark has a plaque commemorating

:13:01. > :13:07.the gold medal in rowing. Funding for the arts has been hit

:13:07. > :13:13.hard, but the theatre by the lake in Keswick has kept its head above

:13:13. > :13:17.water with a wide range of shows. Its remote location on the shores of

:13:17. > :13:21.Derwent water hasn't hampered its ambitious programme, and it remains

:13:21. > :13:31.one of a handful of theatres which employs a rectory company of actors

:13:31. > :13:46.

:13:46. > :13:52.Use your sex appeal. Uncle is very broad-minded. Husband and wife

:13:52. > :13:57.onstage, and soon to be in real life too. Heather and Ben met while

:13:57. > :14:02.working as part of the company as the theatre by the lake in Keswick.

:14:02. > :14:08.Then fell down the stairs, I ran around a lot in my underwear and a

:14:08. > :14:15.blonde wig, and I think that was the great start for a relationship.

:14:15. > :14:19.Yeah. And after completing another summer season at the theatre, they

:14:19. > :14:26.are getting married. What is it like being married onstage knowing you

:14:26. > :14:32.are getting married soon? It's helping pay for the wedding. It's

:14:32. > :14:38.sort of a detached relationship. In comparison, in the other play we do

:14:38. > :14:44.together, we can't stand each other, to the extent that I thought to

:14:44. > :14:51.poison then's character, and he is rescued by his servant, who poisons

:14:51. > :14:55.me instead. That is more realistic. Heather and then's story is part of

:14:55. > :15:01.the unique history of the theatre by the lake. 20 years, it was known as

:15:01. > :15:06.the blue box, made from portable theatre carbons. Some seeds beneath

:15:06. > :15:11.a leaky spot were a no-no when it was raining. And theatre-goers will

:15:11. > :15:15.remember being given a torch and a key they needed a kit to go to the

:15:15. > :15:19.locked block across the car park, but in 1999, the new building was

:15:19. > :15:28.created. Since then, things have gone from strength to strength. Last

:15:28. > :15:34.year, the turnover was 3.3 billion. Revenue from ticket sales was 1.7

:15:34. > :15:39.million last year. The theatre also gets arts Council funding of

:15:39. > :15:43.600,000, and the army of volunteers who help to run the theatre saved

:15:43. > :15:49.around 100,000 a year, enough to employ five other members of

:15:49. > :15:53.permanent staff. It is great fun, you meet people, you meet wonderful

:15:53. > :15:57.audience members, it is a wonderful place and we wanted to be

:15:57. > :16:01.successful, which it is. It gives people a chance to get involved in

:16:01. > :16:11.something local, and this is good for the theatre because they can

:16:11. > :16:16.

:16:16. > :16:21.handful in the UK which employs a repertory company of 14 actors --

:16:21. > :16:27.actors to take part in six plays throughout the summer. It is

:16:27. > :16:32.exciting. There are not many other theatres doing this. Actors used to

:16:32. > :16:37.finished training, go into rap and stay in a theatre for a good amount

:16:37. > :16:44.of time and learn their craft. There are so few chances nowadays for

:16:44. > :16:48.young actors to do that. This season's shows run until early

:16:48. > :16:58.November, so in the meantime, tanning for next year's programme

:16:58. > :16:59.

:16:59. > :17:03.and Ben and Heather's wedding goes Organisers of a celebrity football

:17:03. > :17:07.match on Teeside hope to raise 10,000 for charity. The game was

:17:07. > :17:14.held in memory of a mother and daughter who died in a car crash

:17:14. > :17:20.near Newcastle in August 2010. Too young to remember the crash he will

:17:20. > :17:25.never forget. Ava Richardson was just ten weeks old when her mum Jo

:17:25. > :17:30.and sister Meyer died. She and her dad survived when the pickle he was

:17:30. > :17:37.driving was hit by a car going the wrong way. Grief has now being

:17:37. > :17:43.turned into something positive. couldn't find any help and I thought

:17:43. > :17:47.I wanted to try and do something, we need to try and help others, so that

:17:47. > :17:54.was the foundation for the charity. It's going from strength to

:17:54. > :18:00.strength. Stars from television and music turned out to play in a

:18:00. > :18:04.football match in support of the Jo and Meyer Memorial fund. People say

:18:04. > :18:08.actors want to be footballers, footballers want to be actors, that

:18:08. > :18:13.all the lads enjoy a game of football. It's nice to come and meet

:18:13. > :18:16.the people who have come out. We appreciate them coming out and we

:18:16. > :18:20.like to have a bit of fun and hopefully give people an

:18:20. > :18:26.entertaining day. These guys travel around Dane football for their

:18:26. > :18:31.charity. We help them with the fundraiser we did, and we were keen

:18:31. > :18:38.to come back this year. We all love it up here, so fingers crossed we

:18:38. > :18:41.will be back next year. Yesterday's match is one of a series of events

:18:41. > :18:50.to support the trust which helps children who have lost a parent or

:18:50. > :18:55.sibling. We hope they reach their target.

:18:55. > :19:01.Newcastle united have reporter of the pulled out of negotiations to

:19:02. > :19:06.sign a striker from Lyon. The French club turned down an improved offer,

:19:06. > :19:10.although it is thought the bid remains on the table. It means new

:19:10. > :19:14.director of the bowl Joe Kinnear has failed to sign anyone this summer

:19:14. > :19:24.and remains desperate to build his squad. United are still interested

:19:24. > :19:28.in the signing, Ravi pulled out of the deal in favour of a move to QPR,

:19:28. > :19:33.but one striker set to make his debut tomorrow night is C say, who

:19:33. > :19:40.has resolved his dispute with the club over wearing kit sponsored by

:19:40. > :19:45.wonder. He will return to action tomorrow, bringing his summer of

:19:45. > :19:50.exile to an end. It is a boost for the manager, since this club's

:19:50. > :19:57.search for striker 's house reduced nothing. He has not been involved in

:19:57. > :20:01.any of United's preseason games, including yesterday's victory over

:20:01. > :20:06.Blackpool, after refusing to wear the new shirt on religious grounds.

:20:06. > :20:13.A solution was brokered last week and he is now back in the fold.

:20:13. > :20:18.Sunderland have let their midfielder go to a Turkish side at which meant

:20:18. > :20:25.he played no part in the game in Hong Kong. The atrocious pitch was

:20:25. > :20:33.ruined by torrential rain. They go after 11 minutes sealed the win for

:20:33. > :20:39.city, although Sutherland had a late chance to level the score. City held

:20:39. > :20:44.on to win their first trophy under the new manager. But they look

:20:44. > :20:54.forward to returning to Wearside. Colin Cooper has added to his squad

:20:54. > :21:02.with defender Christian Burgess joining them on loan, and Boro's 21

:21:02. > :21:06.win over Bordeaux... Barrack Rangers beat Livingston, who played two

:21:06. > :21:11.divisions above them in the Scottish league after extra time.

:21:11. > :21:17.She has been to two Olympics, and this evening's Hartlepool's Geller

:21:21. > :21:28.Championships in Barcelona, but she fails to make the final by just 0.02

:21:28. > :21:33.seconds. Someone who hopes of making the athletics Championships are now

:21:33. > :21:38.hiring by a thread it Middlesbrough's Chris Tomlinson.

:21:38. > :21:43.Chris is witting for a phone call which will determine if he makes the

:21:43. > :21:49.team for Moscow. He failed to achieve their long job a standard at

:21:49. > :21:53.the Anniversary Games, his best leap writing him that at the stadium.

:21:53. > :21:58.That leaves this letter is with a straight choice between him and

:21:58. > :22:05.Olympic champion Greg Rutherford, who is best jump this evening is one

:22:05. > :22:09.metre longer then Tomlinson 's but has had a hamstring industry.

:22:10. > :22:16.injured, I'm not, but I do understand he was in the Olympics

:22:16. > :22:21.last year, whereas I finished sixth. If it wasn't for the Olympics last

:22:21. > :22:28.year, I'm sure I would have been selected already. At the IPC World

:22:28. > :22:32.Athletics Championships in Lyon, Jade Jones, lined up alongside the

:22:32. > :22:41.great American Tatyana McFadden. She went on to her sixth gold medal

:22:41. > :22:44.while Jones finished seventh with a time of 15.4 seconds.

:22:44. > :22:54.The wet weather played havoc with several speedway fixtures over the

:22:54. > :22:56.

:22:56. > :22:59.weekend, . These were the scenes on Tyneside, as the rain had paid to

:22:59. > :23:08.Newcastle's Premier league match against Edinburgh. There was a

:23:08. > :23:13.narrow home defeat. The weather was pretty decent over

:23:13. > :23:16.the weekend for the 25th Sunderland International Airshow. The cloud --

:23:16. > :23:23.the crowd turned out in their thousands and it was a fabulous

:24:54. > :24:58.And if you did go, time to enjoy Very nice. A glimpse there of the

:24:58. > :25:05.Northeast weather over the weekend. Volatile is the word that springs to

:25:05. > :25:11.mind. Nice one minute, not so much the next. This was Whitley Bay

:25:11. > :25:15.seafront earlier this afternoon. Sunny one minute, then a downpour

:25:15. > :25:19.resulting in a waterfall leading onto the beach, and many places did

:25:19. > :25:24.have some sharp, thundery showers through today, with good Sunny

:25:24. > :25:29.spells in between. There was that spell of very wet weather over the

:25:29. > :25:34.course of the weekend, sunny for many, sunny eventually on Sunday,

:25:34. > :25:37.but for 12 hours in between there was a month's worth of rain on

:25:37. > :25:43.Carlisle on Saturday night and Sunday morning, almost 80

:25:43. > :25:48.millimetres. As we head into the night, still one or two showers, and

:25:48. > :25:52.that theme continues. Temperatures will stay on the warm side, but

:25:52. > :25:57.always the risk of some volatile thundery showers. A few heavy

:25:57. > :26:01.showers this evening. Most of those will die away tonight, just one or

:26:01. > :26:07.will die away tonight, just one or two in western Cumbria. Temperatures

:26:07. > :26:10.will nip down to 12 or 13 Celsius at the lowest. Tomorrow morning, many

:26:10. > :26:16.eastern areas will start off dry and sunny, but we will see those big

:26:16. > :26:22.shower clouds bring up, and you could easily catch a thundery shower

:26:22. > :26:28.tomorrow. There will be some bright spells in between, some for parts of

:26:28. > :26:33.north Yorkshire where we will see the highest temperatures, around 20

:26:33. > :26:36.Celsius, with a noticeable south-westerly breeze. That is the

:26:36. > :26:43.picture for tomorrow on the pressure chart. For Wednesday, this warm

:26:43. > :26:47.front works up from the south, that will bring rain to most places, also

:26:47. > :26:52.introduces some higher temperatures for the end of the week, so it will

:26:52. > :26:57.be even warmer than over the last few days, so choosy and Wednesday, a

:26:57. > :27:02.risk of a few showers, that rain spreading up from the south.

:27:02. > :27:09.Temperatures generally in the low 20s, but Thursday and Friday, again

:27:09. > :27:17.I rest showers, 25, 26, maybe a few spots a bit warmer than that. You

:27:17. > :27:22.can keep up today with the BBC weather app. Thank you for that. Now

:27:22. > :27:26.for tonight's headlines, this single biggest provider of the NHS 111

:27:26. > :27:31.service has announced it will pull out of its remaining contracts. NHS
