:00:07. > :00:16.Welcome to look North. The headlines: The family of a woman

:00:16. > :00:24.killed in Turkey strenuously deny that the gunman was her mother. Who

:00:24. > :00:28.benefits? —— lover. Benefits cuts for an employees residence. ——

:00:28. > :00:52.unemployed residents will stop ——. And sport: We are live at St James's

:00:52. > :00:56.Park or a charity match will stop and we celebrate the 125th

:00:56. > :01:11.anniversary of one of the regions oldest cricket grounds.

:01:11. > :01:19.The family of the murdered North Yorkshire woman, Anne Bury, have

:01:19. > :01:26.strenuously denied she was having a relationship with her killer.

:01:26. > :01:31.Reports suggested that the gunman killed her in a jealous rage. But

:01:31. > :01:40.the family say that this is a boy to have his sentence reduced, —— Roy,

:01:40. > :01:47.because crimes of passion can see sentences reduced and Turkish

:01:47. > :01:54.courts. This is the villa where a family birth date celebration ended

:01:54. > :01:57.in the worst imaginable horror. A gunman went through the holiday home

:01:57. > :02:05.shooting at everybody's new—found. Anne Bury Locked herself in the

:02:05. > :02:12.bathroom, but the gunman tracked her down and killed her. Her son remains

:02:13. > :02:16.in hospital. I managed to spend just a couple of minutes at the hospital

:02:16. > :02:21.this morning with Alex, it is a difficult time for him. The Lott has

:02:21. > :02:26.done considerable damage, and obviously, she has to come to terms

:02:26. > :02:36.with the deal he has been through and the fact that his mother has

:02:36. > :02:41.lost her life. —— the bullet. The doctors say that he will need to

:02:41. > :02:49.stay for at least one week. The emotional impact will last much

:02:49. > :02:57.longer. Today we moved him from intensive care to normal service. He

:02:57. > :03:03.has overcome life—threatening risks. The family garden is the main

:03:03. > :03:06.suspect. There is talk of a possible dispute with the family, and

:03:06. > :03:12.suggestions that he may have had a deeper relationship with Anne Bury,

:03:12. > :03:20.although this is denied by the family. What we know for certain is

:03:20. > :03:28.that he was initially arrested on Saturday. The following day there

:03:28. > :03:36.was a birthday party at the family villa. The governor returned in the

:03:37. > :03:44.early hours with a shotgun. —— Gardner. It has shocked the locals

:03:44. > :03:47.in this quiet to list town. The police are facing questions about

:03:47. > :03:54.why they did not take more seriously and initial complaint by the family.

:03:54. > :04:01.Questions remain about how a family party in the sun ended in a violent

:04:01. > :04:10.murder. Back home in North Yorks, family friends have spent today

:04:10. > :04:19.reflecting on the tragedy. Today we pray for the village, and the family

:04:19. > :04:35.and friends of Anne Bury. Morning players in a village still in shock

:04:35. > :04:42.at the news. —— players. —— prayers. To come across this in a small

:04:42. > :04:45.village makes it even more shocking. Alex is a regular volunteer helping

:04:45. > :04:56.people with sicknesses and disabilities. Last night, around 200

:04:56. > :05:00.friends turned out at a service. He gives up his holiday time and gets

:05:00. > :05:07.quite a bit of money to support those who need it. —— devs. It is a

:05:07. > :05:15.measure of a lad that the church was full for him. Further prayers for

:05:15. > :05:33.the family will be said this weekend.

:05:33. > :05:41.The jobless rate has risen again in the north—east. 136,000 people are

:05:41. > :05:50.out of work and claiming unemployment benefit. The regional

:05:50. > :05:57.rate is the highest in the country. In Cumbria there was a drop.

:05:57. > :06:02.Meanwhile, a Newcastle city council report says that the combined impact

:06:02. > :06:08.of government benefit changes could take nearly 29 million pounds out of

:06:08. > :06:21.the city economy and lead to job losses. High levels of unemployment

:06:21. > :06:25.and people on benefits. The government says it can drive

:06:25. > :06:31.communities like this for with a radical shake—up of the benefits

:06:31. > :06:40.system. The aim is to reduce the benefits well and make work pay. ——

:06:40. > :06:47.the benefits bill. Peter claims housing benefit. He calculates that

:06:47. > :06:56.government changes have left him £350 worse off every month. I cannot

:06:56. > :07:05.afford to eat. I have had to visit a food bank on two occasions. It is

:07:06. > :07:09.not right. I feel degraded. Today, a city council report said that some

:07:09. > :07:18.of the coolest areas in the city would be particularly hard hit.

:07:18. > :07:27.People in the city could lose 100 and £9 million her young in benefit

:07:27. > :07:38.payments. —— 100 and £9 million —— 115 million pounds a year. If it is

:07:38. > :07:47.reduced, obviously that will in fact on the jobs. Robert is a truck

:07:47. > :07:50.driver who has been off work with illness, but his savings mean that

:07:50. > :08:02.he get little from the benefits system. I feel better in myself that

:08:02. > :08:08.I am living off my own earnings. I am not taking money from the state.

:08:08. > :08:13.The Department of work and pensions say that the report does not take

:08:13. > :08:16.into account the combined impact of welfare reform, which they claim

:08:16. > :08:25.will make 3 million people better off. These are worrying numbers.

:08:25. > :08:32.Ministers say that it all needs to be put into a wider context.

:08:32. > :08:42.They say that the aim is to make work pay. Boost the economy, a

:08:42. > :08:47.virtuous circle, if you like. But some of the report is based on

:08:47. > :08:52.estimates that had not been introduced yet, things like

:08:52. > :08:58.universal credits. The unemployment figures muddy the

:08:58. > :09:00.waters. If you measure the figures in

:09:00. > :09:06.different time slot you get different results. The latest chunk

:09:06. > :09:16.of unemployment figures sees a 3% rise. But compare the year on year,

:09:16. > :09:19.it is unchanged, steady. Politicians, unsurprisingly, will

:09:19. > :09:27.pack the set of figures that suit them best.

:09:27. > :09:30.Two 12—year—old boys from Tyneside have become the youngest ever

:09:30. > :09:34.recipients of banning orders preventing them from visiting

:09:34. > :09:42.football grounds. They admitted the part in the violent disorder that

:09:42. > :09:50.followed the Newcastle defeat to Sunderland in the Derby. They will

:09:50. > :09:54.also half to surrender their passports if Newcastle or England

:09:54. > :10:00.play abroad. Labour MPs have criticised the

:10:00. > :10:06.Health Secretary after it emerged that no north—east hospitals will

:10:06. > :10:12.get extra cash for the winter. Trusts in the North East will not

:10:12. > :10:14.receive any of the money going elsewhere in the country, despite

:10:14. > :10:22.the Royal College of Nursing seeing that they faced unprecedented demand

:10:22. > :10:27.last winter. The government has confirmed that an

:10:27. > :10:32.announcement on an underground nuclear waste repository will be

:10:32. > :10:35.made tomorrow. Plans for the Sellafield site were thrown into

:10:35. > :10:44.disarray in January when the county council vetoed any further searches

:10:44. > :10:50.for sites. Tomorrow, a new process will be

:10:50. > :10:55.unveiled. It is one of the best—known brands

:10:55. > :11:03.in the region but in recent years sales of Philly as fog crisps have

:11:03. > :11:13.been sluggish. But KP snacks has now created 60 jobs. All in the 30th

:11:13. > :11:20.year of manufacturing. This is more than just a factory turning out

:11:20. > :11:26.snacks. It was the first investor after the steelworks closed and gave

:11:26. > :11:36.the town a new profile. Tony Wilson lost his job and the steelworks and

:11:36. > :11:46.has been here since. 30 years later, I am still remained at about the day

:11:46. > :11:51.I walked in. —— reminded. The brand that he and 160 others work on is 30

:11:51. > :12:07.years old. And it has just been reinvented. These are great. Pardon

:12:07. > :12:19.me? The advert is part of a £3 million promotional push. It is a

:12:19. > :12:28.massive part of the snack market. Sharing bags if you are watching a

:12:28. > :12:32.film, having a barbecue, the market for sharing is one of the

:12:32. > :12:40.fastest—growing in the snack market. That is the area we fit into. The

:12:40. > :12:45.company is now chairman owned but the new owner has high hopes. ——

:12:45. > :13:02.chairman —— German. Coming up: We are live at a

:13:02. > :13:07.testimonial match at Saint James spark. And the day but rather lining

:13:07. > :13:12.up for the great North run. —— barefoot. And I will bring you the

:13:12. > :13:28.weather. Schoolchildren in Newcastle have

:13:28. > :13:37.been trying to take to work as part of the British science Festival. ——

:13:37. > :13:48.detective. They set up a mock crime scene to test a forensic skills.

:13:48. > :13:53.Getting out of the classroom into the real world. Or at least a

:13:53. > :14:00.convincing mock up. Children being challenged to find out whodunnit.

:14:00. > :14:10.After an introduction to the crime scene, onto fingerprinting. Can you

:14:10. > :14:19.see yourself doing this as a job? I do not know! For the police, this is

:14:19. > :14:31.a chance to sow the seeds of future carriers. —— carriers. —— careers.

:14:31. > :14:36.If I want to go to university does not just about subjects in school.

:14:36. > :14:49.There is a wider pool of beer that can broaden experience. —— out they

:14:49. > :14:56.are. —— of there. It helps our understanding of police work. Is

:14:56. > :15:02.this just a day of classes? Or is there a higher purpose. An interest

:15:02. > :15:12.in science should start at primary school. Rightly through to the

:15:12. > :15:15.Masters. The whole lot. Our academics are very well versed at

:15:15. > :15:28.explaining complex scientific messages. At a level that children

:15:28. > :15:32.enjoy and can participate in. A bed made for Steve Harper. —— a big

:15:32. > :15:57.night. Both teams will be star—studded.

:15:57. > :16:06.Former ace Milan players, including pulled or can heal.

:16:06. > :16:19.I am taking on the tannoy, a big contest. Finally, Steve Harper calls

:16:20. > :16:33.the shots. Shay given coming off the bench for a change! Some

:16:33. > :16:42.mouthwatering line—ups. Special guests. Franco Barresi. And Paolo di

:16:42. > :16:58.Canale, who is bound to be the pantomime villain. It looks very

:16:58. > :17:06.busy. A decent attendance? They could be an excess of 47,000. And

:17:06. > :17:08.some players who did not always get on. But there will be handshakes

:17:08. > :17:19.tonight. All in a good cause. We will have a report from that game

:17:19. > :17:22.on the late news. It is one year since the closing ceremony of the

:17:22. > :17:38.Paralympics. It turned many into celebrities. Including our very own

:17:38. > :17:41.joseph Craig, MBE. But one world champion was not represented because

:17:41. > :17:44.her discipline was not included. But that will change in Rio. Charlotte

:17:44. > :17:54.Ellis hopes to make up for lost time. She swims, cycles, runs. She

:17:54. > :18:01.has twice a world champion. Three times a European. Charlotte Ellis is

:18:01. > :18:06.a paratriathlon. She competes with a guide. Now her sport is getting the

:18:06. > :18:16.recognition she believes it deserves. It is very exciting to see

:18:16. > :18:22.this become a Paralympic sport. A whole range of disabilities, it is

:18:22. > :18:26.an exciting sport, and things can change, somebody can be good at one

:18:26. > :18:31.discipline, not so much the other. The lead can change throughout the

:18:31. > :18:38.race. Next challenge, regain her world crown. Along with another

:18:38. > :18:44.Gateshead triathletes, Emily P Populous, she will compete in London

:18:44. > :18:47.on Friday. We will compete on the course that

:18:47. > :18:54.was used in the Olympics just 13 months ago. It is all was exciting

:18:54. > :19:01.to represent Great Britain. And it will be nice for family and friends

:19:01. > :19:08.to come and see. Training has been boosted with team GB physiotherapist

:19:09. > :19:12.is based just up the road. She runs a performance clinic at Sunderland

:19:12. > :19:18.University and her services are now open and not just to the elite but

:19:18. > :19:21.to all types of runners. She has launched a running school which is

:19:21. > :19:28.the first of its kind in the north—east. We look at efficiency

:19:28. > :19:34.and fluency. From that we can identify what needs to be modified.

:19:34. > :19:45.Lots of people do not know how to run properly. That is how they get

:19:45. > :19:56.injured and despondent. By helping them improve the running style they

:19:56. > :19:59.will get faster and fitter. Tomorrow one of the oldest Cricket

:19:59. > :20:04.Council in the region will be free for you to look around as part of a

:20:04. > :20:10.heritage open day programme. The Jesmond ground is celebrating its

:20:10. > :20:15.125th anniversary. It has enjoyed a whole new lease of life in recent

:20:15. > :20:18.years. Mention Jesmond to most cricket supporters and that they

:20:18. > :20:24.will tell you about great players who have turned out there in the

:20:24. > :20:31.1980s. But the game had been played there for more than 100 years prior.

:20:31. > :20:35.Letters have recently come to light showing how some of the big names of

:20:35. > :20:39.Victorian society helped the Northumberland County club purchase

:20:39. > :20:44.the ground at the end of the 19th century. They came from all over the

:20:44. > :20:54.place. The south of France. One of the most prolific was Earl Grey. And

:20:54. > :21:07.lots of local people also. £500, £250, and in the end they raised

:21:07. > :21:13.£7,000 in 1897. Since then Jesmond has produced its first share of

:21:13. > :21:31.cricketing stars. —— fear. —— further. —— fair. Was women's

:21:31. > :21:34.cricket popular and 1890s? —— 1950s. Men were critical when we came onto

:21:34. > :21:44.the field. But they were very impressed. That made it nice for us.

:21:44. > :21:49.It took off from the. With neighbours Durham are moving into

:21:49. > :21:53.the first—class game in 1992 the Northumberland ground became rather

:21:53. > :21:57.overshadowed. But then the Newcastle Royal Grammar School agreed to move

:21:57. > :22:09.and as tenants. The improvements in recent years our beer for all to

:22:09. > :22:15.see. —— are there. It is like a little game in the middle of the

:22:15. > :22:18.town. It is beautiful. —— game. Crucial games for Durham and

:22:18. > :22:23.Yorkshire began today as they both battled it out for top spot in the

:22:23. > :22:27.County championship. Durham started out 14.5 points ahead with three

:22:27. > :22:34.games to play. But rain meant that there were only 30 overs bowled.

:22:34. > :22:43.Bad light stopped play early at Hove.

:22:43. > :22:51.Sunday's great North run is fast approaching. We have seen most

:22:51. > :22:56.things over the years. Every fancy dress costume you could imagine. But

:22:56. > :23:01.not many people can claim to have run the famous course without

:23:01. > :23:09.trailers. But that is the plan of Steve Woods. He will run your foot.

:23:09. > :23:15.—— barefoot. It is not something you see everyday. I usually get some

:23:15. > :23:20.quite funny comments. People have gone past in the car and turned

:23:20. > :23:26.round and came back again driving slowly to have a proper look. It

:23:26. > :23:30.makes you smirk. He said he wanted to do something different. Something

:23:30. > :23:37.that would stand out. But running like this brings extra risk. Klass

:23:37. > :23:53.is the main worry obviously. But it tends to band out on the roads. ——

:23:53. > :23:56.alas. —— class. —— class. —— glass. As mother is currently undergoing

:23:56. > :24:00.chemotherapy and he is running for cancer research. There is a chance

:24:00. > :24:05.this could be cured. But it needs funding. Every pound that somebody

:24:05. > :24:15.donates contributes. We will get there in the end. I thought I would

:24:15. > :24:19.play my small part. When he last ran a half marathon he was wearing

:24:19. > :24:22.trainers. But he says the discomfort is nothing compared to the courage

:24:22. > :24:33.that his mother—in—law is showing every day.

:24:34. > :24:41.There will be updates online throughout the day. And BBC

:24:41. > :24:47.Newcastle will be at the start line ahead of the great North run.

:24:47. > :25:12.I don't think someone will be a major problem for the main event on

:25:12. > :25:25.Sunday. —— sunburn. The weather is very unsettled. Typically tunnels.

:25:25. > :25:31.—— tunnel. Autumnal. Over the next few days it will stay changeable.

:25:31. > :25:37.Rain for most of us. The interludes from time to time. Mostly dry as we

:25:37. > :25:42.head into this evening and overnight. But we will hang onto

:25:42. > :25:50.cloud. Very low and misty. Fork patches forming. It may produce

:25:50. > :25:56.drizzle. But the temperatures will be mild of the last couple of

:25:56. > :26:03.nights. They overlaid low as 52 Fahrenheit. It is a grey and misty

:26:03. > :26:10.start for many tomorrow. Bright spells will begin to appeal. " There

:26:10. > :26:19.can begin from the north—west. That will bring rain. Brighter spells

:26:19. > :26:26.will shift eastwards ahead of that dream. When the sun comes out the

:26:26. > :26:33.temperatures really well left. We will see highs tomorrow of 18, 19

:26:33. > :26:40.Celsius. The south—westerly breeze will be quite brisk at times. The

:26:40. > :26:46.weather system will bring the rain and from the north—west later in the

:26:46. > :26:52.day. Dry through Friday and Saturday by the looks of things. Then things

:26:52. > :26:58.go downhill. Wet and windy weather coming from the north—west. If

:26:58. > :27:06.you're out and about, rain from the north—west later tomorrow, died on

:27:06. > :27:11.Friday, —— dry. Temperatures in the mid teens. Saturday looks mostly

:27:11. > :27:15.dry, host of the rain in the south. Sunday is a different story. ——

:27:15. > :27:20.most. For the great North run, it looks as if the best of any dry

:27:20. > :27:26.weather will be for the events taking place on the Saturday.

:27:27. > :27:30.Sunday, expect wind and rain. On the upside, it comes from the

:27:30. > :27:31.south—west. By the finish line, it will be a tailwind.
