:00:17. > :00:21.Hello, welcome to Look North. In the programme tonight.

:00:22. > :00:25."You know what you did". The message from police to the driver of the car

:00:26. > :00:27.that killed three year old Danny Wake.

:00:28. > :00:30.A tuberculosis scare for parents of babies born at this hospital ` their

:00:31. > :00:32.infants are being recalled for checks.

:00:33. > :00:35.Please don't ignore us. The plea from students at a special college

:00:36. > :00:36.who fear potential employers are ignoring them.

:00:37. > :00:40.And Middlesbrough X`Factor winner James Arthur reveals there's a down

:00:41. > :00:44.side to winning the talent show. In sport ` we're live at the Stadium

:00:45. > :00:45.of Light as Sunderland prepare to take on Southampton in the League

:00:46. > :00:49.Cup. And a couple of crackers from

:00:50. > :00:58.Carlisle on bonfire night hold high flying Wolves to a draw.

:00:59. > :01:04.It's two days since three year old Danny Wake was killed in a hit and

:01:05. > :01:07.run incident. Today, police sent this message to the driver of the

:01:08. > :01:12.car that killed him: "You know what you did." Danny died after he was

:01:13. > :01:17.struck in Darlington. The moments leading up to that collision were

:01:18. > :01:20.filmed on CCTV. A local man had been arrested on suspicion of causing

:01:21. > :01:23.death by dangerous driving. Last night police released him without

:01:24. > :01:29.charge. Our reporter Alison Freeman has been following the story.

:01:30. > :01:31.They were on their way home to start choosing Christmas presents.

:01:32. > :01:35.Three`year`old Danny Wake, seen here in the green jacket, was going to

:01:36. > :01:38.pick out what he wanted from a catalogue they'd collected together

:01:39. > :01:52.in town. Moments later he was hit by a car

:01:53. > :01:59.and died. That is tragic. They will probably not have a Christmas. We

:02:00. > :02:03.need people to come forward and tell us exactly what happened.

:02:04. > :02:07.Danny, his mum, and brother Georgie had walked back from Darlington town

:02:08. > :02:10.centre along Neasham Road. But when they turned into Falmer Road, Danny

:02:11. > :02:12.somehow strayed away from his mother and into the path of the oncoming

:02:13. > :02:16.vehicle. The person driving did not stop.

:02:17. > :02:20.Police have spoken to a vast number of people and are combing hundreds

:02:21. > :02:23.of hours of CCTV footage. But they still want to trace anyone else who

:02:24. > :02:26.saw anything suspicious. In particular passengers on two

:02:27. > :02:38.Arriva buses passing along Neasham Road at the time. I ask those

:02:39. > :02:43.individuals on that bus to come forward and tell us what they saw. I

:02:44. > :02:52.also feel to the person who was driving the vehicle that morning. ``

:02:53. > :02:57.I also appealed to the person. It is important you tell us what happened

:02:58. > :03:03.so the family can understand what happened that morning. Officers

:03:04. > :03:07.investigating the crash arrested a 24`year`old local man on Monday

:03:08. > :03:10.afternoon and a car was taken from a nearby street to be examined, hours

:03:11. > :03:12.after the accident. The man cooperated fully and has since been

:03:13. > :03:15.released without charge. Police say they now want people in

:03:16. > :03:19.this close`knit community to think hard about what they saw that day to

:03:20. > :03:28.help find the driver of that vehicle.

:03:29. > :03:31.Alison's with me now. So, from what the police are saying there's no

:03:32. > :03:39.chance the driver did not know what happened?

:03:40. > :03:43.At a press conference they said the driver would know what happened.

:03:44. > :03:57.They did say it was an accident but said he should come forward. The

:03:58. > :03:59.crash happened on Monday morning. Durham police seek every piece of

:04:00. > :04:08.information could prove vital. 41 babies, who were treated in a

:04:09. > :04:13.Sunderland hospital neo`natal unit, have been called back to be tested

:04:14. > :04:16.for tuberculosis. The infants were in the Sunderland Royal Hospital

:04:17. > :04:23.unit between May one and August seven this year. Dedicated clinics

:04:24. > :04:26.have been set up for the babies to be assessed and tests will be

:04:27. > :04:29.carried out next week. Obviously a great concern for the

:04:30. > :04:33.parents of those babies. Earlier, the Health Trust's Medical Director,

:04:34. > :04:39.Ian Martin joined me in the studio. I asked him how rare an incident

:04:40. > :04:47.like this is. It is a rare condition. On average

:04:48. > :04:55.in Sunderland we get 12 admissions per year. It is not common. It is

:04:56. > :05:04.not easy to pass that infection on either. If anybody did get it the

:05:05. > :05:14.treatment is simple. It is antibiotics for a few weeks.

:05:15. > :05:27.Babies are vulnerable. There are age makes them vulnerable parents are

:05:28. > :05:33.concerned. We have put in place a helpline. There are a dedicated team

:05:34. > :05:37.of professionals to answer questions. They have all been

:05:38. > :05:41.offered an appointment with a consultant if they want to talk

:05:42. > :05:45.about it in more detail. We understand their concern. We are

:05:46. > :05:50.sorry it has happened to them. It is one of those things. There is

:05:51. > :05:59.nothing that could have been done to prevent it. I fully understand they

:06:00. > :06:04.will be concerned. The chance of any baby being infected is remote. If

:06:05. > :06:13.that happens to cover the treatment is simple. We do not expect any baby

:06:14. > :06:16.to come to harm as a consequence. As Mr Martin said, the Trust has set

:06:17. > :06:27.up a helpline for concerned parents to call. It's open between 8am and

:06:28. > :06:30.8pm daily on 07810 637 810. People in a County Durham village

:06:31. > :06:36.say closing their local school would rip the heart out of their

:06:37. > :06:38.community. Durham County Council's considering shutting Roseberry

:06:39. > :06:41.College and Sixth Form in Pelton near Chester`le`Street because of

:06:42. > :06:44.low pupil numbers. But campaigners say even though some students could

:06:45. > :06:47.be transferred to a brand new academy, children's education will

:06:48. > :06:54.be damaged in the upheaval. Here's our Political Correspondent Mark

:06:55. > :07:04.Denten. I geography lesson. Today's topic is

:07:05. > :07:07.the birth rate. That is rather at because Durham County Council says

:07:08. > :07:16.they are closing the school because animal birth rate has left it with

:07:17. > :07:29.low pupil numbers. `` because a low birth rate. It is the beating heart

:07:30. > :07:39.of the community. Generations have been educated here. That is why this

:07:40. > :07:44.school is festooned with protest banners. The concern is that the

:07:45. > :07:52.school is shut people will end up the miles up the road.

:07:53. > :07:54.While Durham County Council has not said where the children would go of

:07:55. > :08:02.that school close, parents are convinced they would end up here.

:08:03. > :08:10.Parents are worried that the upheaval could damage the education

:08:11. > :08:16.of their children. At the moment we live two minutes away from the

:08:17. > :08:22.school. But the other school might be to bus journeys away.

:08:23. > :08:25.Durham County Council emphasises that no decisions have been made

:08:26. > :08:28.yet, but with a significantly falling roll the school's

:08:29. > :08:31.sustainability has to be questioned. Mark Denten, BBC Look North, Pelton,

:08:32. > :08:34.County Durham. It was a reasonably busy bonfire

:08:35. > :08:38.night for fire crews across the North East and Cumbria. Thousands of

:08:39. > :08:43.people chose to go to organised displays like this one in Stockton

:08:44. > :08:46.last night. But one brigade, the Tyne and Wear Fire service, attended

:08:47. > :08:52.more than 400 incidents ` mainly bonfires. The crew of Blue Watch at

:08:53. > :08:57.Byker Fire Station in Newcastle got called to a range of incidents.

:08:58. > :09:01.It's a dilemma facing many councils. Charges for car parking bring in

:09:02. > :09:04.much needed revenue ` but do they drive shoppers away which could then

:09:05. > :09:07.lead to shop closures and ultimately the loss of business rates? In

:09:08. > :09:11.Middlesbrough you can now park for free for the first two hours. But in

:09:12. > :09:14.Cumbria shop owners are angry over consultation plans to abolish some

:09:15. > :09:21.free parking zones and introduce charges.

:09:22. > :09:23.Traders are warning it could force them out of business.

:09:24. > :09:27.The County Council has to make savings of ?24 million, but it says

:09:28. > :09:30.this idea is just at the consultation stage. Graham Moss has

:09:31. > :09:37.been to two West Cumbrian towns where feelings are running high.

:09:38. > :09:41.The town centre has recovered from the floods of four years ago.

:09:42. > :09:47.Neither is a new threat to their livelihood. Car parking is one of

:09:48. > :09:53.the principal reasons that high streets decline. For the County

:09:54. > :09:56.Council to proposed a scheme whereby they will charge for parking on the

:09:57. > :09:59.streets of our market towns is the most stupid idea I have heard in

:10:00. > :10:08.ages. It is a broadly similar arrangement

:10:09. > :10:11.here. Display one of these desks and that gives you 30 minutes free

:10:12. > :10:17.parking. There are concerns that this is going to change. It will

:10:18. > :10:22.have a heavy impact. Shoppers would move away. They would go to where

:10:23. > :10:32.they will get free parking. It would hit shops. I did not come into

:10:33. > :10:42.politics to start charging for people that are traditionally the.

:10:43. > :10:56.But we had to recuperate some of the costs. It is not going to encourage

:10:57. > :11:08.shoppers. I have never been in agreement with paying for parking.

:11:09. > :11:11.The consultation runs until the end of January.

:11:12. > :11:14.In a region with the highest unemployment level in the country

:11:15. > :11:17.finding a job is tough for many. But it's being claimed people with

:11:18. > :11:19.serious vision problems and learning difficulties are facing a two`fold

:11:20. > :11:23.battle. Henshaws College, near Harrogate, caters for people with a

:11:24. > :11:26.wide range of learning and sensory disabilities, and says it's seen a

:11:27. > :11:38.steady decline in offers of work placements and employment. Phil

:11:39. > :11:45.Chapman reports. This man wants to live and

:11:46. > :11:52.meaningful life and work hard. But his gene could be harder to reach

:11:53. > :12:07.than ever. `` his dream could be harder to reach. My dream would be

:12:08. > :12:17.to hold my own `` to own my own restaurant. If people realise what

:12:18. > :12:38.they could do it would open their eyes. This man would like a job

:12:39. > :12:52.sorting mail somewhere. I have seen a decline in the opportunities for

:12:53. > :13:06.our students. But it then affects the employer and our students. It

:13:07. > :13:17.benefits everybody. For the students here the dream is

:13:18. > :13:21.to find a little independence. Saltburn singer and X Factor winner

:13:22. > :13:27.James Arthur says his rapid rise to stardom left him struggling with

:13:28. > :13:43.depression and anxiety. And we will have the full weather

:13:44. > :13:47.forecast later. James Arthur says his rise to

:13:48. > :13:51.stardom left him struggling with depression and anxiety. The

:13:52. > :13:55.25`year`old who's already had a number one and sold more than a

:13:56. > :13:58.million singles, is this evening in Middlesbrough signing copies of his

:13:59. > :14:03.debut album. Our reporter Stuart Whincup joined

:14:04. > :14:06.the crowds. He's gone from being an unemployed

:14:07. > :14:10.musician to one of Britain biggest artists. But James Arthur says he's

:14:11. > :14:20.struggled with his sudden rise to fame. And in the last year has

:14:21. > :14:24.battled anxiety and depression. You constantly feel like you are doing

:14:25. > :14:36.positive things and certain sections of the media want to drag the

:14:37. > :14:45.success story down. We have someone who achieves success and immediately

:14:46. > :14:48.we want to tear them down. His first single Impossible sold

:14:49. > :14:51.more than a million copies. He was nominated for a Brit award and

:14:52. > :15:00.supported Justin Timberlake. But his hightlight of the year, was

:15:01. > :15:09.something closer to home. I performed on the pitch of my beloved

:15:10. > :15:13.team. He admits he was never going to be

:15:14. > :15:17.the shiny pop star who was popular with all. And he says he owes much

:15:18. > :15:26.of his success to the people of Teesside. A lot of people from

:15:27. > :15:30.Middlesbrough probably voted for me to win the X factor. It is important

:15:31. > :15:40.for me to come here to appreciate those people.

:15:41. > :15:42.Not quite fireworks but there was plenty of Bonfire Night

:15:43. > :15:47.entertainment at Brunton Park last night. Carlisle United twice came

:15:48. > :15:51.from behind in League One to earn a well deserved draw against high

:15:52. > :15:54.flying Wolves. After losing three of their last

:15:55. > :15:57.four games Carlisle boss Graham Kavanagh was looking for a response

:15:58. > :16:05.from his players and the bonfire night encounter turned out to be a

:16:06. > :16:08.real cracker. A win for the once mighty Wolves would have seen them

:16:09. > :16:12.move joint top of the League and early on they were on fire as Bakary

:16:13. > :16:17.Sako sent a shot fizzing past Mark Gillespie to take the lead. But the

:16:18. > :16:20.Blues were in no mood to let Kenny Jackett's men have their own way and

:16:21. > :16:24.their new Ghanaian international Prince Buaben scored his first goal

:16:25. > :16:28.for the club with a regal chip to put them back on level terms. But

:16:29. > :16:30.Wanderers went into half time 2`1 up ` Leigh Griffiths' header hitting

:16:31. > :16:34.both posts before somewhat fortuitously going in. Carlisle

:16:35. > :16:38.burned brightest after the break and when Buaben was brought down by Lee

:16:39. > :16:42.Evans in the box. Liam Noble stepped up to send the keeper the wrong way

:16:43. > :16:46.from the spot. Both sides had chances to win it but a point a fair

:16:47. > :16:57.result and the manager delighted to be back on track. We asked a great

:16:58. > :17:07.deal of the group. I am really pleased that they produce that the

:17:08. > :17:12.home fans. To put it a performance like that was special.

:17:13. > :17:16.On the day it was revealed that club legend Niall Quinn is to be awarded

:17:17. > :17:18.the Freedom of the City of Sunderland, another welcome

:17:19. > :17:21.distraction for fans dismayed by their team's start to the season.

:17:22. > :17:25.The Black Cats take on Southampton in the League Cup for the right to

:17:26. > :17:28.host Chelsea in the quarterfinals. Our sports reporter Mark Tulip is

:17:29. > :17:31.already at the Stadium of Light. Definitely some changes tonight

:17:32. > :17:35.Mark? Well three have been forced on new

:17:36. > :17:39.head coach Gus Poyet, Dawn. Both Lee Cattermole and Andrea Dossena begin

:17:40. > :17:42.their three match bans after being sent off in the defeat at Hull last

:17:43. > :17:44.weekend. And Kieron Westwood suffered a neck injury in the same

:17:45. > :17:48.game. I think Poyet would have wanted to

:17:49. > :17:52.freshen things up anyway and he'll have one eye on the daunting league

:17:53. > :17:55.game here against Manchester City. But the Uruguayan knows that victory

:17:56. > :17:57.tonight could restore some of the momentum Sunderland enjoyed briefly

:17:58. > :18:00.after their derby success, although Southampton are playing some great

:18:01. > :18:09.football this season and are sixth in the Premier League. They are a

:18:10. > :18:33.difficult team to beat. They are fit. A former Sunderland goalkeeper

:18:34. > :18:37.is a funeral on the south coast although by his own admission he

:18:38. > :18:43.does not enjoy a happy spell on Wearside. The home fans will be

:18:44. > :18:47.hoping it stays that way tonight. Full commentary on BBC radio

:18:48. > :18:51.Newcastle. Well in 24 hours time, the attention

:18:52. > :18:55.turns from the Stadium of Light to the Sunderland Aquatics Centre next

:18:56. > :18:58.door. It's staging its first international tournament as the

:18:59. > :19:00.Great Britain water polo team continues its quest to qualify for

:19:01. > :19:08.the European Championships in Hungary.

:19:09. > :19:12.The GB men's water`polo team didn't win any matches at London 2012, but

:19:13. > :19:14.this new`look squad has reaped the benefits of the higher profile

:19:15. > :19:17.enjoyed by the sport. Sunderland's also experiencing a higher profile,

:19:18. > :19:19.thanks to its state`of`the`art aquatic centre attracting this four

:19:20. > :19:22.nation qualification tournament, which it's hoped will bring a

:19:23. > :19:29.significant boost to the local economy. This is what the team have

:19:30. > :19:45.been working towards for a lot of years. We are over the moon with it.

:19:46. > :19:53.The aquatics centre is on the map. It helps us show the world what we

:19:54. > :19:57.have as a facility. We have been over the moon with the facilities.

:19:58. > :20:03.It is almost tailor`made for water polo. It is a good atmosphere for

:20:04. > :20:07.the players and the fans. If GB can beat Israel and Moldova

:20:08. > :20:10.ahead of their final match against Russia, that might be good enough to

:20:11. > :20:17.reach the final qualifying round ahead of next July's European

:20:18. > :20:22.Championships in Budapest. The European Championships would be

:20:23. > :20:25.amazing stop. Tickets are still available and the tournament, which

:20:26. > :20:29.begins tomorrow, runs until Sunday. Mark Tulip, BBC Look North,

:20:30. > :20:32.Sunderland. And two of the teams are off next

:20:33. > :20:37.door to watch the Sunderland`Southampton game tonight.

:20:38. > :20:40.Time for Sportskids now and this week we meet a youngster from

:20:41. > :20:43.Middlesbrough who's a champion in a sport that doesn't get much coverage

:20:44. > :20:46.in this country but remains very popular on the international stage.

:20:47. > :21:04.Here's a clue ` Stephanie Cleasby got her skates on to find out more.

:21:05. > :21:11.My sport is roller`skating. I love everything about it. I love

:21:12. > :21:24.my routines. Roller`skating is similar to ice`skating. Artistic

:21:25. > :21:37.roller`skating is just like ice`skating, but on wheels.

:21:38. > :21:49.If I know I can do something I am confident. I just go for it. If I

:21:50. > :21:52.fall I just get back up. She is skating her way to the top. She has

:21:53. > :22:09.been a British champion on any occasions. `` on many occasions. She

:22:10. > :22:26.has achieved so much. She can only get better. It is a sport that is

:22:27. > :22:40.not as easy as it looks. What do you do with your feet? Push.

:22:41. > :22:46.Do you get nervous? " additions I get nervous. `` in competitions I

:22:47. > :23:04.get nervous. How dedicated is she? 100%

:23:05. > :23:09.dedicated. She puts a lot of hard work and effort into training. She

:23:10. > :23:50.is hoping for greater success with her solo routine.

:23:51. > :24:07.You have got the Children In Need calendar.

:24:08. > :24:31.1000 have been sold already. Get your orders in quickly.

:24:32. > :25:18.more details of those events as we come closer stop their weather.

:25:19. > :25:37.The risk of some showers. Westerly winds at times. Today this system

:25:38. > :25:43.passed off to the South. The first part of this evening there will be

:25:44. > :26:03.outbreaks of rain. They should not last long. Close will start to break

:26:04. > :26:11.up. Temperatures will drop away. One or two icy patches. Tomorrow morning

:26:12. > :26:20.mostly dry start. Plenty of sunshine. Western areas will see

:26:21. > :26:44.showers. This showers will have sleet and

:26:45. > :26:54.snow. Over the next few days it stays fairly ghastly. `` over the

:26:55. > :27:16.next few days the gusty winds remain.

:27:17. > :27:20.More persistent rain by Sunday. Now a last look at the headlines.

:27:21. > :27:30.500 years of shipbuilding in Portsmouth will come to an end.

:27:31. > :27:40.Police in Darlington call on the hit and run driver who killed Danny Wake

:27:41. > :27:47.to come forward. That is all for now. Goodbye.
