:00:10. > :00:15.Hello. Welcome to Look North. In the programme tonight: Calls for a ban

:00:16. > :00:20.on hands`free phones in cars, after research here suggests they cause

:00:21. > :00:25.drivers to lose concentration. Multitasking at the wheel and doing

:00:26. > :00:28.anything that distracts you from the road is potentially fatal.

:00:29. > :00:30."Thank you for saving my life." The 13`year`old plucked from a West

:00:31. > :00:34.Cumbrian harbour is reunited with his rescuer.

:00:35. > :00:40.The plot of derelict land that could hold the key to thousands of new

:00:41. > :00:43.jobs. And don't try this at home ` the

:00:44. > :00:47.stunt bike spectacular coming to Tyneside in the new year, hoping to

:00:48. > :00:49.win new fans for the sport of motocross.

:00:50. > :00:52.In sport, the Eagles are flying high as they reach basketball's cup

:00:53. > :00:55.semifinal again, and is the honeymoon over for Carlisle's new

:00:56. > :01:11.boss, as the Cumbrians drop yet more points at home?

:01:12. > :01:15.We know it's against the law and dangerous to drive while holding our

:01:16. > :01:20.mobile phone, but isn't it OK to drive hands`free? Well, not

:01:21. > :01:23.according to scientists at Newcastle University. They say their research

:01:24. > :01:28.shows even using hands`free can seriously reduce our ability to

:01:29. > :01:31.drive safely. The findings coincide with National Road Safety Week, and

:01:32. > :01:37.the charity Brake is now calling for a ban on using hands`free phones in

:01:38. > :01:40.cars. Driving while using a hand`held

:01:41. > :01:46.mobile phone has been illegal in the UK for a decade now. But it isn't

:01:47. > :01:50.against the law to drive while talking hands`free. Researchers,

:01:51. > :01:53.though, have now discovered that using our phones hands`free can

:01:54. > :02:00.significantly reduce our ability to drive safely. Well, I've come down

:02:01. > :02:05.to Newcastle University to find out exactly what they've discovered in

:02:06. > :02:08.the research. They have given me this strap, which is going to go

:02:09. > :02:14.underneath here and monitor my heart rate and breathing. They have also

:02:15. > :02:17.given me a set of goggles with two small cameras, and that's going to

:02:18. > :02:22.monitor my eye movements and see what I am looking at on the road.

:02:23. > :02:27.Whilst at the wheel, the researchers called me. I answered hand`held and

:02:28. > :02:30.hands`free. They asked increasingly complex questions, whilst recording

:02:31. > :02:35.my heart rate, breathing, and driving ability. Overall, their

:02:36. > :02:38.tests show drivers taking calls on hands`free phones saw their ability

:02:39. > :02:48.to maintain speed and their steering performance decline 37%. We can see

:02:49. > :02:51.when people start talking on the phone, they didn't even recognise

:02:52. > :02:54.the hazard they've been through, and they didn't even stop for a stop

:02:55. > :02:59.line, and missed a red traffic light. And even on the hands`free,

:03:00. > :03:06.when they're in a conversation that demands a lot of thinking, they can

:03:07. > :03:09.be incredibly distracted. We're looking at the point where you start

:03:10. > :03:12.answering the phone... We're all getting busier and multitasking

:03:13. > :03:21.more, and mobile phones mean we can be contacted anywhere, at any time.

:03:22. > :03:24.But beware, say the scientists, as their evidence shows that talking to

:03:25. > :03:27.someone on the phone hands`free is more dangerous than talking to a

:03:28. > :03:30.passenger. When you're talking to a passenger, they are context aware.

:03:31. > :03:34.They know what's happening on the road, and they may be quiet when

:03:35. > :03:37.they see you doing a difficult manoeuvre or they may change if they

:03:38. > :03:41.recognise there is danger on the road. When you're talking to someone

:03:42. > :03:44.remotely at the end of the phone, who doesn't know what the driving

:03:45. > :03:47.conditions are, they will continue the conversation, and you will try

:03:48. > :03:51.and maintain it, even though you're getting more dangerous. The research

:03:52. > :03:54.coincides with the start of National Road Safety Week, and the charity

:03:55. > :03:56.Brake has now called for the use of hands`free phones to be banned in

:03:57. > :04:07.cars. Sharon joins me now. Sharon, Brake's

:04:08. > :04:11.stance is certainly uncompromising ` as far as they're concerned phones

:04:12. > :04:22.should be banned completely? But not everyone shares that view? Brake say

:04:23. > :04:24.that the use of mobile phones increases the risk of having

:04:25. > :04:27.accidents, but there are contradictions. Research in

:04:28. > :04:30.Australia claims to show that children in cars causing

:04:31. > :04:32.distractions are twelve times more dangerous than mobile phones. That's

:04:33. > :04:37.something we put to Brake's representative Rich Andrew. I think

:04:38. > :04:40.there is an important message, and we do work closely with educators

:04:41. > :04:44.from nursery schools upwards, to try and get that message out to children

:04:45. > :04:47.as well as to parents and to drivers, about the importance of

:04:48. > :04:51.kind of being sensible and knowing your responsibilities of being in a

:04:52. > :04:57.car, whether as a driver or as a passenger. Brake is using academic

:04:58. > :05:00.research, as we saw. It wasn't carried out in real driving

:05:01. > :05:04.situations ` so is it valid? That's right, more people than ever now use

:05:05. > :05:07.mobile phones, and more and more cars are using hands`free

:05:08. > :05:10.technology. But there's no evidence of an increase in accidents caused

:05:11. > :05:18.by phones, that's something else we put to Brake. What the research

:05:19. > :05:22.shows today, and I think the really important message that has come out

:05:23. > :05:25.of today is that this simulation and the research that backs it up shows

:05:26. > :05:28.that conversation can be a huge distraction, especially if it is a

:05:29. > :05:38.work`related conversation, where you really have to concentrate. It's

:05:39. > :05:40.certainly a contentious subject, and you can join the debate on the Look

:05:41. > :05:56.North Facebook page. A West Cumbrian man who saved a

:05:57. > :06:00.teenager from drowning has told Look North he was just in the right place

:06:01. > :06:03.at the right time. Ryan Lowery's day out fishing at Maryport harbour

:06:04. > :06:07.almost ended in tragedy when he slipped and fell from a pier. He was

:06:08. > :06:10.in the water for almost 20 minutes, before being hauled to safety by

:06:11. > :06:13.Brian Pattinson. Graham Moss reports.

:06:14. > :06:17.Reliving the events of an afternoon that nearly ended in tragedy.

:06:18. > :06:23.13`year`old Ryan Lowery was fishing on the North Pier when he slipped

:06:24. > :06:30.and lost his footing. I tried to grab something, but I kept sliding.

:06:31. > :06:38.When I got into the water, I had a tiny burst of energy to push myself

:06:39. > :06:46.to the sea wall and cling onto it. I had told onto a tiny ledge for about

:06:47. > :06:50.15 minutes until Brian came. Brian Pattinson always carries overall in

:06:51. > :06:55.his car boot just in case. He was on the opposite side of the harbour

:06:56. > :07:00.when he heard someone in the water. I ran along with the rope and tied a

:07:01. > :07:08.knot in it, threw it out over the side, and luckily, Brian was still

:07:09. > :07:13.conscious and could put it over his head and his arms, and I was able to

:07:14. > :07:21.pull him back towards the steps, which are I knew with the local

:07:22. > :07:25.knowledge I had. The police and the close card have praised Brian's

:07:26. > :07:27.quick thinking. They have said if he had not acted in the way he did,

:07:28. > :07:35.things could have been very different. It is terrifying. It was

:07:36. > :07:40.a near death experience. It is horrible. I couldn't stop him from

:07:41. > :07:48.shaking. That was my worry, that he was shaking badly. But obviously, he

:07:49. > :07:52.is here today, and thankfully is OK. I would be dead, it's as simple as

:07:53. > :07:59.that. There is no good way to put it. I was in the right place at the

:08:00. > :08:04.right time, and I had enough time to get to him. Ryan is recovering well,

:08:05. > :08:12.and him and his mother cannot thank Brian enough.

:08:13. > :08:15.A new development in York could create thousands of jobs, according

:08:16. > :08:19.to the city council. ?10 million is to be spent on what is, at the

:08:20. > :08:22.moment, derelict land behind York railway station. And even more jobs

:08:23. > :08:26.are in the offing. 200 fresh posts are being advertised at the new John

:08:27. > :08:30.Lewis store in the city. Dave Edwards reports.

:08:31. > :08:34.At Monk's Cross on the outskirts of York, construction is well underway.

:08:35. > :08:39.In the spring, this building will host one of the biggest names in

:08:40. > :08:42.British retail ` John Lewis. 100 posts have already been filled, and

:08:43. > :08:48.200 more were advertised this morning. The interest in the jobs

:08:49. > :08:52.when we advertised the 100 roles has been fantastic. We had 500 people

:08:53. > :08:55.from the local area wanting to come and join John Lewis, and we're

:08:56. > :08:58.really hoping and expecting a similar number of people apply for

:08:59. > :09:03.the 200 selling and catering roles that we've advertised today.

:09:04. > :09:07.Meanwhile, over in the centre of York, another major announcement.

:09:08. > :09:12.This land behind the railway station has been derelict for years. Plans

:09:13. > :09:15.to develop it and build thousands of homes and offices were put on hold

:09:16. > :09:20.in 2009 at the height of the recession. But today, the City

:09:21. > :09:25.Council has announced it's spending ?10 million on a new bridge to allow

:09:26. > :09:33.access to the site. It says that will kick`start development and help

:09:34. > :09:35.create thousands of jobs. And those jobs will be much`needed here in

:09:36. > :09:41.Yorkshire, where last week's official figures showed unemployment

:09:42. > :09:46.rose by 4000. There are now 248,000 people in the region without a job.

:09:47. > :09:53.It is hoped today's two announcements will help that figure

:09:54. > :09:56.start to fall. Police investigating the mysterious

:09:57. > :10:00.death of a solicitor found stabbed on a footpath can't rule out the

:10:01. > :10:04.possibility he killed himself. It's more than two months since the body

:10:05. > :10:07.of 56`year`old Peter Maine was discovered in Durham, but still

:10:08. > :10:12.there have been no arrests and no weapon has yet been found. Today, a

:10:13. > :10:14.coroner was told nobody saw the incident take place. Our News

:10:15. > :10:18.Correspondent, Peter Harris, reports.

:10:19. > :10:24.Captured on CCTV on a morning run, yet minutes after these pictures

:10:25. > :10:29.were taken, Peter Maine was dead. Stabbed, we do know, but why and by

:10:30. > :10:32.whom remains a mystery. And now, say the police, they can't rule out the

:10:33. > :10:38.possibility he'd inflicted the wounds himself. On the morning of

:10:39. > :10:42.September the first, the solicitor had been running near Maiden Castle

:10:43. > :10:46.in Durham. At 8am, he was found on a path and later died We know he was

:10:47. > :10:50.being investigated over fraud allegations. Durham Police launched

:10:51. > :10:58.a murder`style inquiry But there the trail appears to run cold. We know

:10:59. > :11:01.Peter Maine died of stab wounds, but a pathologist's report was

:11:02. > :11:06.inconclusive as to how exactly those wounds were inflicted. Durham Police

:11:07. > :11:10.say many witnesses have come forward, though there still may be

:11:11. > :11:13.some who have not been contacted, and a further difficulty for the

:11:14. > :11:20.police is that there is no CCTV or witnesses of the moment the wounds

:11:21. > :11:23.were actually inflicted. And so, since nobody saw it and nobody has

:11:24. > :11:27.been arrested, the police say they can't rule out the option that Mr

:11:28. > :11:31.Maine stabbed himself. One further puzzle ` if that theory was true,

:11:32. > :11:36.then what happened to the implement which killed him? It's never been

:11:37. > :11:43.found. Today, the police updated the Durham coroner on the investigation

:11:44. > :11:46.at a pre`inquest review. That was adjourned for further enquiries. All

:11:47. > :11:50.possibilities in this case are open ` but two months on, the death of a

:11:51. > :12:00.runner stabbed at a beauty spot remains a mystery.

:12:01. > :12:02.A man's been given a five`year prison sentence at Newcastle Crown

:12:03. > :12:05.Court today, following a fatal collision in Prudhoe, in

:12:06. > :12:09.Northumberland, last July. David Robinson ` who's 26 and lives in

:12:10. > :12:12.Woodhead Road in the town ` pleaded guilty to causing death by dangerous

:12:13. > :12:16.driving, failing to stop and report an accident and two other driving

:12:17. > :12:20.offences. His victim ` 65`year`old Kathleen Heslop ` was crossing a

:12:21. > :12:24.road and was hit by Robinson's car. She died at the scene.

:12:25. > :12:27.Refurbishment work on the Tyne pedestrian and cyclist tunnels was

:12:28. > :12:31.halted temporarily today, after a fire broke out at nearby C Marine

:12:32. > :12:35.Services in Wallsend. Workers were cleared from the area, after the

:12:36. > :12:40.flames took hold in a small factory unit an acetylene cylinder exploded.

:12:41. > :12:49.There were fears other substances on the site could explode.

:12:50. > :12:52.One of Carlisle's main tourist attractions will lose ?250,000 in

:12:53. > :12:56.city council funding from 2015. Despite this, the Tullie House

:12:57. > :12:58.Museum and Art Gallery has drawn up a ?16 million redevelopment plan.

:12:59. > :13:02.It's hoped Lottery funding will cover some of the cost.

:13:03. > :13:06.A seafaring charity has said the crew of a ship detained on Tyneside

:13:07. > :13:09.for health and safety reasons could still be here over Christmas. The

:13:10. > :13:12.Mission to Seafarers in South Shields is visiting the 16`strong

:13:13. > :13:18.crew of the bulk carrier Donald Duckling. They were so poorly fed on

:13:19. > :13:21.the ship's voyage from Las Palmas to Tyneside, they were forced to fish

:13:22. > :13:27.from the vessel, and cook on fires set on deck. Our business

:13:28. > :13:30.correspondent Ian Reeve reports. The ship that could be with us for

:13:31. > :13:35.some time yet. Taiwanese`owned Donald Duckling, detained on the

:13:36. > :13:39.Tyne last week. It'll be here until its owner puts right many safety

:13:40. > :13:44.issues. Its Filipino and Romanian crew are at least getting some

:13:45. > :13:48.comforts. We've given them free phone cards, so that they can make

:13:49. > :13:51.contact at home. And obviously, they've used the internet, so they

:13:52. > :13:55.can get... All of them are wanting to find out what's happening back

:13:56. > :14:00.home, and a lot of them haven't been able to get in touch with their

:14:01. > :14:04.families. This is the gallery itself, the burner. Deep fat

:14:05. > :14:09.fryers... It's thought the ship may even be here until Christmas. We can

:14:10. > :14:12.offer them the use of the galley, because obviously, they want to cook

:14:13. > :14:16.their food their way, and they tend to like spicy food. Not like our

:14:17. > :14:20.traditional Christmas dinners. So, yes, they'll have the use of this,

:14:21. > :14:24.and this place is their home. Well, the ship is currently docked at

:14:25. > :14:27.Whitehead Point on the north bank of the River, but it could be moved

:14:28. > :14:32.offshore while its problems are rectified. But there is a risk in

:14:33. > :14:36.that, in that it could merely sail away. But while she's still here,

:14:37. > :14:41.Mission to Seafarers, such as Geoff and Richard, are able to visit the

:14:42. > :14:46.crew. As soon as you got up the gangway, you could see the rust and

:14:47. > :14:51.scale all over. It hadn't been maintained at all. Not for years, I

:14:52. > :14:55.don't think. The crew, they looked all right. They looked quite happy.

:14:56. > :15:02.The Filipinos are very happy race, anyway. Quite resilient. Quite,

:15:03. > :15:05.erm... Boisterous, in a way. And they may need that resilience. At

:15:06. > :15:09.least one Filipino crew member knows that back home, many miles from

:15:10. > :15:12.North Shields, members of his family are still missing in the aftermath

:15:13. > :15:21.of the typhoon that has so devastated his homeland.

:15:22. > :15:24.Police are becoming increasingly concerned for a man who's been

:15:25. > :15:28.missing from his home in County Durham for a week. Peter Jackson `

:15:29. > :15:31.who's 38, and from Weybourne Lea in Seaham ` hasn't been seen since

:15:32. > :15:35.leaving for work last Monday morning. Officers say it's out of

:15:36. > :15:40.character. They're urging people to contact them if they see him.

:15:41. > :15:44.850 jobs have been safeguarded at the Pirelli tyre plant in Carlisle,

:15:45. > :15:48.after plans to extend it were backed by councillors. The company plans to

:15:49. > :15:51.invest ?2 million in the plant. An extension will house new machinery,

:15:52. > :15:56.giving the firm the capacity to produce more

:15:57. > :15:58.environmentally`sustainable tyres. Lumiere ` the spectacular raft of

:15:59. > :16:00.lighting installations and projections which have been

:16:01. > :16:05.illuminating Durham's buildings and streets ` is over. At least, for

:16:06. > :16:08.another couple of years. Last night saw the end of the four`day

:16:09. > :16:12.festival, which again proved hugely popular and attracted big crowds.

:16:13. > :16:15.Organisers say around 175,000 people turned up and Durham Police say

:16:16. > :16:21.crowd control was much better than last time.

:16:22. > :16:24.Coming up next in tonight's Look North` a sneak preview of a truly

:16:25. > :16:27.spectacular show coming to the region early next year.

:16:28. > :16:36.And give yourselves a slap on the back. Our region helps Children In

:16:37. > :16:40.Need to a record`breaking total. And after a mild weekend, things turned

:16:41. > :16:49.colder. Join me later for the details.

:16:50. > :16:52.A venue more used to holding concerts will be turned into an

:16:53. > :16:56.indoor motor racing track next year. Tonnes of earth will be used to

:16:57. > :16:58.create a dirt bike course when the Arenacross tour comes to the

:16:59. > :17:01.MetroRadio Arena in Newcastle in February. It's hoped the excitement

:17:02. > :17:04.of races and daredevil motorbike stunts will encourage families to

:17:05. > :17:10.become fans of the sports, as Alison Freeman reports.

:17:11. > :17:14.Terrifying to watch, but throwing yourself in the air on a few hundred

:17:15. > :17:23.pounds of speeding metal, isn't apparently as mad as it looks. I

:17:24. > :17:30.like to think I'm pretty calculated. I hate roller coasters is, Juno.

:17:31. > :17:32.Everything we do is very well rehearsed. We are able to do things

:17:33. > :17:45.because we repeat. Dan is one of a number of freestyle

:17:46. > :17:52.motocross riders who'll be entertaining crowds at the O2 Arena

:17:53. > :17:55.in Newcastle in February. `` MetroRadio Arena. It's part of the

:17:56. > :17:59.Arenacross tour, which will also feature indoor dirt bike racing `

:18:00. > :18:02.some competitors are as young as seven. Among them will be Wallsend

:18:03. > :18:11.brothers 10`year`old Buster and Joel, who's 15. Both have been

:18:12. > :18:15.riding since they were toddlers. When you are on the track, what are

:18:16. > :18:22.you thinking about? It's a frightening? You want to think hard,

:18:23. > :18:26.because I always think I have to think one step ahead. You have to

:18:27. > :18:34.think about the cones and think about the next jumps. That's what I

:18:35. > :18:38.do. It makes me a better writer. `` better rider. And transforming the

:18:39. > :18:41.shiny floors of the arena is surprisingly quick. Over a 24`hour

:18:42. > :18:45.period, 560 trucks will carry in 6000 tonnes of dirt to turn the

:18:46. > :18:48.arena into a race track And then there's the 18`ton truck on which

:18:49. > :18:54.they're going to land these heart`stopping jumps. The tour is

:18:55. > :19:02.taking in seven venues, but a win home win for local competitors is a

:19:03. > :19:06.priority. It's really important for my friends and family to come to

:19:07. > :19:11.this one, because I am local. I want them to get the hang me and I will

:19:12. > :19:16.put on a good show and come out with a win. It's hoped the tour will

:19:17. > :19:19.attract new fans to motocross. And if these gravity`defying stunts are

:19:20. > :19:28.anything to go by, it should keep the audience on the edge of their

:19:29. > :19:32.seats. That was amazing! Now, Dawn's here, and she'll have

:19:33. > :19:36.the sports news in a moment. First though, we have to say a big thank

:19:37. > :19:39.you to everybody who took part in this year's BBC Children In Need

:19:40. > :19:43.appeal. Yes, a very big thank you, because yet again, the national

:19:44. > :19:46.appeal has set a new record. And of the ?31 million pledged on the

:19:47. > :19:50.night, almost ?1.4 million came from the North East and Cumbria. The Look

:19:51. > :19:53.North team were out and about in Hexham on Friday night, and more

:19:54. > :19:57.than ?16,000 came from donations at the Outside Broadcast alone. Here's

:19:58. > :19:58.a reminder of the sort of things people got up to.

:19:59. > :20:16.Attention! # I could lift you up. # I could

:20:17. > :20:18.show you what you want to see and take you where you want to

:20:19. > :20:28.# Even if the sky is falling down I know that we'll be safe and sound.

:20:29. > :20:42.# You know my river won't evaporate, this world will still appreciate.

:20:43. > :20:52.# Even in a hurricane I know that we'll be safe and sound.

:20:53. > :21:15.Yes, that was me claiming! I quite enjoyed it when I got to the top. As

:21:16. > :21:18.long as you don't look down! No Premier league or Championship

:21:19. > :21:21.action over the weekend, of course, because of the internationals, but

:21:22. > :21:24.there was plenty of action further down the leagues. Gateshead with

:21:25. > :21:27.probably the result of the weekend, but we start our round`up in League

:21:28. > :21:31.one and a draw for Carlisle United. Young on`loan Man Utd keeper Ben

:21:32. > :21:34.Amos made his debut for the Blues in a much`changed starting line`up at

:21:35. > :21:38.Brunton Park. The game didn't spark into life until the second half `

:21:39. > :21:42.Prince Buaben forcing a save from Phil Jones before Max Ehmer was

:21:43. > :21:45.brought down by Joe Walsh to force a penalty. Liam Noble, back from

:21:46. > :21:48.suspension, thumped the ball in from the spot to give Carlisle the lead.

:21:49. > :21:52.But with just two minutes of normal time left, Billy Clarke broke down

:21:53. > :21:55.the win to fire in the equalizer from 25 yards. Carlisle now six

:21:56. > :21:59.games without a win. We've been a bit of a sticky patch at the moment

:22:00. > :22:03.and the pressure was starting to build. You could sense a little bit

:22:04. > :22:07.of tension around the ground, and when you get one goal up, you think

:22:08. > :22:10.you're going to get the three points. It didn't happen today, and

:22:11. > :22:14.one mistake has cost us. York City will play Crawley in the second

:22:15. > :22:17.round of the FA Cup if they beat Bristol Rovers tomorrow night. On

:22:18. > :22:21.Saturday, though, they had to settle for a draw. Ryan Bowman headed in

:22:22. > :22:24.this cross from Luke O'Neill to put them ahead, the first goal Plymouth

:22:25. > :22:27.have conceded in almost 500 minutes. But substitute Tope Obadeyi levelled

:22:28. > :22:33.the score to make sure the League two strugglers shared the points. It

:22:34. > :22:36.was a disapopinting Friday night for Hartlepool United, who played their

:22:37. > :22:39.third game in six days. A goal in each half secured all three points

:22:40. > :22:43.for Newport County, who move into the League two playoff zone. Former

:22:44. > :22:49.Carlisle keeper Lenny Pidgeley had a great game. The only time he was

:22:50. > :22:52.beaten was by Andy Monkhouse, whose shot hit the post. Gateshead

:22:53. > :22:55.stretched their unbeaten run in the Conference to five matches against

:22:56. > :22:58.Salisbury on Saturday. Josh Walker put them ahead after less than a

:22:59. > :23:01.minute, with a close`range strike. Then, a minute into the second half,

:23:02. > :23:06.James Curtis floated the ball into the path of James Marwood to extend

:23:07. > :23:09.the lead. It looked like it was game over when Walker headed in his

:23:10. > :23:12.second goal and Gateshead's third, and although there was a slightly

:23:13. > :23:16.nervy end to the game when Salisbury came back with two late goals, the

:23:17. > :23:24.result puts Gary Mills side just two points off the playoff places.

:23:25. > :23:27.On to basketball, and a weekend when Glasgow Rocks were reduced to rubble

:23:28. > :23:31.by both our top`flight teams. Durham Wildcats beat them by 85 points to

:23:32. > :23:33.72 in the League on Saturday, before losing to Cheshire Phoenix last

:23:34. > :23:36.night. And after thumping Manchester Giants at Sports Central on Friday,

:23:37. > :23:40.Newcastle Eagles knocked the Scots out of the BBL Cup 48 hours later.

:23:41. > :23:44.The Eagles won their quarterfinal tie 81 points to 69 ` Malik Cooke

:23:45. > :23:47.top`scoring with 27. And there could be a North East derby in the

:23:48. > :23:50.semifinal, with Newcastle up against the winners of next weekend's

:23:51. > :23:54.showdown between the Wildcats and Sheffield Sharks.

:23:55. > :23:57.And in rugby union, Newcastle Falcons' hopes of making it beyond

:23:58. > :24:01.the group stage of the Anglo`Welsh Cup suffered a setback, with a heavy

:24:02. > :24:04.defeat at Gloucester. They went down by 20`3, with the Falcons' only

:24:05. > :24:11.score coming from a Rory Clegg penalty. It's Northampton who now

:24:12. > :24:13.look to qualify for the semi`finals. Thanks, Dawn, Now, just before the

:24:14. > :24:17.weather, congratulations to Teesside actor Mark Benton, who survived the

:24:18. > :24:23.dreaded dance`off for a second week running, to remain in this year's

:24:24. > :24:26.Strictly Come Dancing competition. He was in the bottom two with former

:24:27. > :24:30.Bond girl Fiona Fullerton, but he and partner Iveta Lukosuite received

:24:31. > :24:34.three votes to one to stay in the competition. Mark told Look North he

:24:35. > :24:38.never dreamed he'd make it this far and said he was absolutely amazed by

:24:39. > :24:48.the support he's received from the public. Well done, Mark! What a

:24:49. > :24:54.fabulous outfit, nothing compared to this man!

:24:55. > :24:56.I had to cover up, because people were having to adjust the contrast,

:24:57. > :25:02.because my legs were having to adjust the contrast,

:25:03. > :25:07.because were quite! The weather has been nice and mild recently, but

:25:08. > :25:12.it's all change, as we head through the coming week. Things will be

:25:13. > :25:15.noticeably colder. Don't believe everything you believe in the

:25:16. > :25:21.papers, I don't think it will be completely snowy, but it will be

:25:22. > :25:28.noticeably colder. This weather front will bring in cold air, and

:25:29. > :25:34.introduce a fresher sense for it this evening. Overnight it will

:25:35. > :25:39.mostly be dry, then maybe the odd shower on the coasts, but most

:25:40. > :25:45.places will be dry with long clear spells and a bit of shelter.

:25:46. > :25:52.Temperatures easily sub zero, down to about minus two Celsius. There

:25:53. > :25:57.will be ice patches to watch out for to enter tomorrow morning, so frosty

:25:58. > :26:04.start for most of us, but again, most places will stay dry and fame,

:26:05. > :26:08.with the odd wintry shower. Most places will have blue skies, and it

:26:09. > :26:18.will never feel warm, because the sun is weak, but we will have by the

:26:19. > :26:22.end of the day, some cloud in the north`west, and some rain and sleet

:26:23. > :26:26.and snow in Scotland. That heads are we tomorrow night and into

:26:27. > :26:33.Wednesday. It comes from this weather system from the North, and

:26:34. > :26:41.brings out mixture of snow `` a mixture of snow and sleet. It will

:26:42. > :26:45.quite indent by Friday when the high`pressure tries to build, so if

:26:46. > :26:49.you are writing about the next few days, Cumbria will see the rain

:26:50. > :26:53.clear on Wednesday, and it will stay mostly died on Wednesday and

:26:54. > :27:00.Thursday, but temperatures will only recover a little bit. The north`east

:27:01. > :27:07.again will see more showers on Thursday, with the north`easterly

:27:08. > :27:15.wind coming in, cold north`easterly wind making it colder than number

:27:16. > :27:17.suggest. `` than the numbers suggest.

:27:18. > :27:20.Now for a look at tonight's headlines. Two leading internet

:27:21. > :27:23.companies are to crack down on the practice of searching online for

:27:24. > :27:25.images of child six abuse. Google and Microsoft will automatically

:27:26. > :27:27.block 100,000 search terms. And scientists at Newcastle

:27:28. > :27:30.University say using hands`free mobile phones while driving can

:27:31. > :27:35.seriously reduce our ability to drive safely.

:27:36. > :27:40.practice of searching online for images of child That's it first just

:27:41. > :28:02.now. Carol is back tomorrow morning for breakfast. Goodbye.

:28:06. > :28:21.CS Lewis meets HG Wells meets Father Christmas, that's the Doctor.

:28:22. > :28:25.Can't we have Doctor Who without Doctor Who?
