:00:07. > :00:10.Look North. Tonight: A jury finds this man

:00:11. > :00:14.guilty of sexually exploiting young girls. Two others are acquitted. The

:00:15. > :00:19.latest live from Teesside Crown Court.

:00:20. > :00:23.The crackdown on organised crime. More than 20 arrests as the police

:00:24. > :00:29.target more than a dozen homes in early morning raids.

:00:30. > :00:33.Are you ready for winter? A special report on how some have made special

:00:34. > :00:39.preparations in case there's a big freeze.

:00:40. > :00:43.And there's 'bearly' room for anything else ` as nearly 500

:00:44. > :00:45.teddies are donated to a lakeland charity shop.

:00:46. > :00:48.In sport ` plenty to keep you occupied before the second Ashes

:00:49. > :00:50.Test. Newcastle are in South Wales, while Sunderland hope to dent

:00:51. > :00:53.Mourinho's title ambitions. And Boro come up against the club's

:00:54. > :01:06.most successful manager. We'll hear from a nostalgic Steve McClaren!

:01:07. > :01:14.He sexually exploited vulnerable young girls. Taxi driver 32`year`old

:01:15. > :01:20.Shakil Munir used Facebook to contact his victims ` who were aged

:01:21. > :01:24.just 13 and 14. This afternoon, after a seven week trial at Teesside

:01:25. > :01:27.Crown Court, he was found guilty of sexual activity with a child and a

:01:28. > :01:32.charge of abduction. Two other men walked free from court. Stuart

:01:33. > :01:42.Whincup has been following the case and joins us from outside court now.

:01:43. > :01:47.The trial heard Shakil Munir had targeted young vulnerable girls. He

:01:48. > :01:51.befriended the girls and offered free lists as a taxi driver. He

:01:52. > :01:57.picked one girl up from her home in the early hours of the morning. She

:01:58. > :02:03.was in her pyjamas and slippers. He drove her around the region. He then

:02:04. > :02:10.took her to a lay`by and had sex with her. He was 32, the young girl

:02:11. > :02:17.was 14. His other victim was just 13. Throughout the trial he said the

:02:18. > :02:21.allegations were false. After 11 hours of deliberation, the jury came

:02:22. > :02:29.back and found him guilty of all charges will stop But two men walked

:02:30. > :02:34.free from court this afternoon? That is correct. Two of the four men

:02:35. > :02:41.walked free from court this afternoon. An 18`year`old, we have

:02:42. > :02:47.pictures of him leaving court. He was cleared of a charge of sexual

:02:48. > :02:52.activity. Another 18`year`old was also cleared of sexual activity with

:02:53. > :02:56.a child. The jury will return to court tomorrow to continue their

:02:57. > :03:01.deliberations on the other remaining person on trial, a 17`year`old youth

:03:02. > :03:08.who cannot be named for legal reasons. Actor you. Thank you. ``

:03:09. > :03:12.back to you. They gathered in the dead of night

:03:13. > :03:15.and then poured onto the streets of County Durham to tackle the gangs

:03:16. > :03:19.involved in organised crime. More than 150 police officers were

:03:20. > :03:25.involved in Operation Orient. Their main target: suspected drug dealers.

:03:26. > :03:28.They smashed down 15 doors and made 20 arrests following their early

:03:29. > :03:31.morning raids across the county. Our News Correspondent Peter Harris

:03:32. > :03:41.joined the operation and sent us this report. It is five o'clock in

:03:42. > :03:49.the morning and the orders are being given out. We intend to target 15

:03:50. > :03:53.addresses, looking for 16 people. Then the police break up into teams,

:03:54. > :04:01.each will take out a different card `` target. Their quarry is suspected

:04:02. > :04:08.heroin dealers. It has taken five months to reach this stage. Then,

:04:09. > :04:15.the front doors start to go on. The suspect here, he is awake now. It is

:04:16. > :04:21.just after quarter past six, the address here was one of 15 across

:04:22. > :04:26.the county. They were all hit at the same time, with the police aiming to

:04:27. > :04:36.arrest approximately 16 suspects. The command centre in Durham, the

:04:37. > :04:40.team waited for news. It can be protracted for these kinds of

:04:41. > :04:47.operation. The community can see the effects already this morning. That

:04:48. > :04:52.is the disproportionate amount of time committed by few people. If we

:04:53. > :04:59.focus on taking those people out of society, it takes a long time, but

:05:00. > :05:03.the results today speak themselves. In the end, 20 arrests today and the

:05:04. > :05:06.police say it proves they mean business.

:05:07. > :05:10.Meanwhile 43 people have been arrested in a major police operation

:05:11. > :05:13.in North Yorkshire. Officers recovered stolen goods, as well as

:05:14. > :05:17.seizing money and drugs, including heroin and cannabis. Operation Hawk

:05:18. > :05:20.is designed to send a stark warning ` that criminal activity will not be

:05:21. > :05:25.tolerated police will pursue anyone intent on breaking the law.

:05:26. > :05:33.Phil Bodmer spent the day with officers in York Scarborough. And

:05:34. > :05:41.early`morning call for the unsuspecting occupants of an address

:05:42. > :05:46.in York. The team of police raid a house in Clifton, on the lookout for

:05:47. > :05:52.stolen goods. We have a systematic search of the address, which is

:05:53. > :05:57.undergoing at the moment. We have recovered some items which we

:05:58. > :06:03.suspect may be stolen. There will be further enquiries throughout the

:06:04. > :06:08.day. This police activity, coordinated from a central control

:06:09. > :06:13.room in York, involves hundreds of officers from all areas of North

:06:14. > :06:19.Yorkshire. Its aim is to make offenders feel the consequences of

:06:20. > :06:22.committing crime. The action sends out a clear message to criminals

:06:23. > :06:27.travelling into North Yorkshire. If they come here to carry out illicit

:06:28. > :06:32.activity, they will find a hostile reception. In Scarborough, traffic

:06:33. > :06:40.officers were out patrolling country road, favoured by criminals as a way

:06:41. > :06:44.of avoiding the main trunk routes. We have intelligence which suggest

:06:45. > :06:50.that the vehicle connected to bringing drugs from Manchester to

:06:51. > :06:57.Scarborough will be on this road. It might not stop for us. Since July

:06:58. > :07:01.the operation has seen more than ?2 million worth of property seized and

:07:02. > :07:07.?750,000 worth of drugs taken off the streets. Back at the address in

:07:08. > :07:12.York, three people are taken in for questioning. They will be taken to

:07:13. > :07:20.the local police station and interviewed. They will be questioned

:07:21. > :07:24.and it will be ascertained what is their relation to the property in

:07:25. > :07:29.the address. This evening the police say more than 40 people and arrested

:07:30. > :07:34.today. They expect more to follow overnight.

:07:35. > :07:37.The inquest into the killing of Christopher Brown has been told

:07:38. > :07:41.there was an official prison report warning of the danger posed by a man

:07:42. > :07:44.who'd then go on a shooting spree. It was written by a prison officer

:07:45. > :07:49.on the day Raoul Moat was released from Durham Jail, where he'd served

:07:50. > :07:52.a sentence for assault. The existence of the report and its

:07:53. > :08:01.contents were first revealed by Look North. Today the inquest heard how

:08:02. > :08:07.prison officer Martin Phillips was given a warning about Raoul Moat by

:08:08. > :08:12.a trusted prisoner, it came on the morning of his release. He told the

:08:13. > :08:14.inquest he went straightaway to fill in as security information report.

:08:15. > :08:29.He wrote... Officer Phillips thought the report

:08:30. > :08:34.was important enough to be handed personally buy into it your officer.

:08:35. > :08:40.But the inquest heard nobody checked with him to see you who his source

:08:41. > :08:44.was. He had not take a box on the front page of the report marked

:08:45. > :08:52.action immediately. The coroner asked him about the box. Officer

:08:53. > :08:59.Phillips said he did not understand what it would convey. Raoul Moat was

:09:00. > :09:04.now on the outside while the report was being circulated. It was passed

:09:05. > :09:11.on three times and after six hours return to a senior officer. By now,

:09:12. > :09:19.Samantha Stoppard was the person at risk. The report also contained her

:09:20. > :09:26.address. However, Mr Hunter did not mark the box action immediately but

:09:27. > :09:30.action within 72 hours. Before that time, Christopher Brown had been

:09:31. > :09:34.shot and killed. Samantha Stoppard shot and seriously injured. PC David

:09:35. > :09:41.Rathband would be and Raoul Moat Richard himself when

:09:42. > :09:45.cornered by the police. The inquest continues tomorrow.

:09:46. > :09:50.The funeral of 12`year`old Matthew Hayes has taken place in Sunderland.

:09:51. > :09:53.He was killed after being hit by a bus in Ryhope last Friday. This

:09:54. > :09:57.afternoon more than 300 mourners attended St Matthews Church to pay

:09:58. > :10:01.their respects. Matthew was described as a generous, kind

:10:02. > :10:04.hearted and funny boy ` who loved Dr Who.

:10:05. > :10:07.Police are appealing for information following the discovery of an

:10:08. > :10:11.elderly woman's body in the River Nidd in North Yorkshire. The body

:10:12. > :10:14.was found near the viaduct close to Mother Shipton's Cave at 8.50am this

:10:15. > :10:16.morning. Officers say there's nothing to suggest there are any

:10:17. > :10:23.suspicious circumstances surrounding the death and enquiries are underway

:10:24. > :10:27.to establish the woman's identity. 70 jobs are to go with the closure

:10:28. > :10:30.of a chemical plant on Teesside. The South Korean`owned Lotte Chemical

:10:31. > :10:33.will shut its Wilton PTA facility ` a product that's used in the

:10:34. > :10:36.manufacture of plastics. The company's blaming poor prices in the

:10:37. > :10:39.world market, as well as competition from China. However, Lotte will

:10:40. > :10:46.continue to employ about 170 workers elsewhere on the Wilton site.

:10:47. > :10:51.The Government says it will announce in a year's time whether the A1 will

:10:52. > :10:54.be upgraded in Northumberland. Campaigners have been fighting for a

:10:55. > :10:56.dual carriageway for decades. Today, ministers announced a feasibility

:10:57. > :11:04.study into the road north of Newcastle will report in Autumn

:11:05. > :11:07.2014. At the same time, the Government will announce options to

:11:08. > :11:17.alleviate congestion and tackle problems on the A1 Gateshead Western

:11:18. > :11:19.bypass. We will continue to keep the pressure on, we see it as crucial.

:11:20. > :11:24.We need a proper strategic link between ourselves and Scotland,

:11:25. > :11:27.particularly Edinburgh. We desperately need that. We are

:11:28. > :11:29.pleased that the feasibility study is starting.

:11:30. > :11:33.You're watching Wednesday's Look North. Dawn's here shortly with

:11:34. > :11:37.tonight's sports news. A real toy story. The charity shop

:11:38. > :11:42.that's been left 500 teddy bears in a will. There is a weather warning

:11:43. > :11:51.on the programme. I will be here with all the details later.

:11:52. > :11:54.Right, batten down the hatches ` winter is on its way. And if that's

:11:55. > :11:57.not bad enough, it's worth remembering that severe weather

:11:58. > :12:01.events are becoming ever more frequent. But does that mean we just

:12:02. > :12:05.have to sit back and see what nature throws at us? Or should we be taking

:12:06. > :12:10.matters into our own hands and planning for the worst? Paul Mooney

:12:11. > :12:13.has been to meet people from across the region who have been doing just

:12:14. > :12:25.that for tonight's Look North Report.

:12:26. > :12:33.More sleet and snow on the way. Floods, Gailes, blizzard conditions.

:12:34. > :12:38.In winter, resources can be stretched to the maximum. Take

:12:39. > :12:44.Cumbria county council, they have an annual budget of ?4.4 million for

:12:45. > :12:50.their maintenance programme but with over 4000 miles of roads, they have

:12:51. > :12:56.two prioritise. What if you do not live on a priority road? If you live

:12:57. > :13:08.off the beaten track, you may never see a council greater. `` gritter.

:13:09. > :13:13.So they have built their own snowblower. A group of us decided we

:13:14. > :13:23.needed something better for people. It was being kept very busy. We went

:13:24. > :13:28.out because more than once, we went out 120 times/G, we were very busy.

:13:29. > :13:33.A second machine has been added and the locals are reaping the benefits.

:13:34. > :13:39.Some monitors we can get five foot drifts on the drive. `` some

:13:40. > :13:45.winters. The drivers about 100 yards long. When we try to query in the

:13:46. > :13:50.past, it has taken us about three days to get rid of this now.

:13:51. > :13:56.Sometimes the wet stuff can be a bigger problem than the white stuff.

:13:57. > :14:18.Over 20,000 properties are at risk in the North East. The logos of the

:14:19. > :14:26.head`on, with the Environment Agency to come up with a local Flood action

:14:27. > :14:30.plan. We will utilise the above flood plain. That has all the

:14:31. > :14:35.amenities which are required. We have worked in unison with us all.

:14:36. > :14:43.We are able to utilise some of their roof structure, which is storage and

:14:44. > :14:52.also personnel. Once we're happy, we will pass on that information.

:14:53. > :14:56.Prevention is not an option for everyone. A heavy snowfall can be a

:14:57. > :15:03.heartbreaker for the North's farmers. This year we have been down

:15:04. > :15:12.in a sheltered fields. The ones who have lambs out there but shelters

:15:13. > :15:19.up. A storm came and in that field we lost about 30 lambs, and a lot of

:15:20. > :15:28.people lofts a lot of animals. If you use alarm, that is your

:15:29. > :15:33.property. If you lose a you, that is your livelihood. It is back in the

:15:34. > :15:38.Pennines that we find Ray Miller, perhaps the perfect man for all

:15:39. > :15:43.seasons. You meet people and they are waiting for you. They are really

:15:44. > :15:49.friendly. It is part of life of here. When the winter is over and

:15:50. > :16:00.things warm up, Ray provides a vital service for the people, as he plays

:16:01. > :16:01.to a different tune. Let us know how you've

:16:02. > :16:07.winter on the Look North Facebook page. The details on how to log on

:16:08. > :16:11.are on your screen now. Charity shops can be a great place

:16:12. > :16:15.to grab a bargain. The Beckhams recently donated some designer gear

:16:16. > :16:19.to one. And if you're after a teddy bear for Christmas, an Oxfam shop in

:16:20. > :16:24.the Lake District could be the place to go. In fact, they can barely fit

:16:25. > :16:26.any more stock in the shop. That's because they've got almost 500

:16:27. > :16:30.teddies to sell, thanks to the generosity of a local lady, who left

:16:31. > :16:38.her impressive collection to them in her will. Here's Dave Guest. They

:16:39. > :16:43.are cute, they are cuddly and they can be quite costly. These are

:16:44. > :16:53.nursed just teddy bears, these are special teddy bears. We bought these

:16:54. > :16:57.in Germany. If these were to go into a teddy bear auction, it would make

:16:58. > :17:05.in the region between three and ?4000. Not every teddy bear is worth

:17:06. > :17:11.that kind of money. In Oxfam shop, they are awash with things. A local

:17:12. > :17:15.woman left her entire contents of a home in Oxfam shop when she passed

:17:16. > :17:20.away. When volunteers arrived cleared out they were in for a big

:17:21. > :17:28.surprise. Every single room was full of teddy bears. In one room there

:17:29. > :17:35.was about 12 foot square, which was well but deep with teddy bears. The

:17:36. > :17:40.Oxfam volunteers spent time cleaning and sorting out the Bears. They have

:17:41. > :17:45.discovered around 180 Tories, fanatics blinds wider price tickets

:17:46. > :18:01.are more than you would normally expect to see `` toys. People have

:18:02. > :18:06.not group price? No. They also found a number of other rare bears and

:18:07. > :18:12.collectable toys. Since we have been put them on the sale, our takings

:18:13. > :18:16.have been going up. In case you're wondering, all of the Bears don't

:18:17. > :18:24.live timidly at the Oxfam shop. They been secured at other places.

:18:25. > :18:27.Tempting, but I would not let mine loose.

:18:28. > :18:29.Now, it's time to meet another Sportskid in our latest film

:18:30. > :18:34.featuring youngsters who excel at their chosen sport. This week it's a

:18:35. > :18:40.boy from Northumberland who, as Stephanie Cleasby's been finding

:18:41. > :18:49.out, has a spring in his step. I'm Jack Taylor, I'm 13 years old and I

:18:50. > :18:57.love trampolining. Jack's sport requires a huge amount

:18:58. > :19:00.of dedication. Three days a week after school, he travels from his

:19:01. > :19:09.home in Humshaugh to Washington for training, a 70 mile round trip.

:19:10. > :19:14.When I come here, it is like a new me. Because I know nearly everything

:19:15. > :19:18.about trampolining. Louis Murray has started coaching me and started

:19:19. > :19:26.building up my confidence about trampolining.

:19:27. > :19:30.He's started excelling really fast, I could not reach that standard

:19:31. > :19:38.until I was 15 or 16, he is 13, he is excelling. You go really, really

:19:39. > :19:42.high. What goes through your head when you

:19:43. > :19:46.are doing it? Just hopefully I will not land on my

:19:47. > :19:50.neck! I have done that countless times.

:19:51. > :19:55.Jack trains with Kat Driscoll, who went to the London 2012 Olympics

:19:56. > :19:59.with Team GB. He is not scared, he is prepared to

:20:00. > :20:03.try anything, if you have no fear you are onto a winner. Lots of kids

:20:04. > :20:19.will get scared of everything, he has not had that. If he can keep

:20:20. > :20:21.that going, he has a lot to give. He was ranked fifth at his first

:20:22. > :20:26.international championships, which is a great achievement. Hopefully he

:20:27. > :20:32.will progress to the British youth team.

:20:33. > :20:36.The thought of reaching new heights really drives Jack forward. Do you

:20:37. > :20:40.think you might get to the Olympics one day?

:20:41. > :20:52.My mum says if I put enough effort in then I might. My mum wants a free

:20:53. > :20:55.holiday! That was a somersault with the half twist on the end, but I

:20:56. > :21:00.overpowered it and I broke my own cheekbone. People at school started

:21:01. > :21:15.calling me Chipmunk because my cheek was swollen. You should definitely

:21:16. > :21:23.start trampolining, it is great fun. I can see why they get scared doing

:21:24. > :21:31.that. Having no fear, I think that is the key. I did a little bit when

:21:32. > :21:34.I was young. Sunderland boss Gus Poyet knows his

:21:35. > :21:37.side will have to come up with something special at the Stadium of

:21:38. > :21:40.Light tonight against his former club Chelsea if they're to drag

:21:41. > :21:44.themselves off the bottom of the table. The Black Cats slipped back

:21:45. > :21:47.to the foot of the Premier League last night after Crystal Palace beat

:21:48. > :21:51.West Ham. But the optimists might point to the league table at this

:21:52. > :21:54.point two years ago when Martin O'Neill took over. After 14 games

:21:55. > :21:58.Sunderland were on 11 points, which is where they'll be if they can

:21:59. > :22:02.upset the odds and claim three points against Jose Mourinho's men.

:22:03. > :22:07.Obviously he is one of the best, if not the best. Can we beat him? I

:22:08. > :22:12.don't know, but it would be nice. The problem is that we know we are

:22:13. > :22:16.going to have to be very good and even be a bit lucky on the day, and

:22:17. > :22:20.then perform to our best. What I enjoy the most is to be able to be

:22:21. > :22:22.there. That is a great achievement to be leading a Premiership team

:22:23. > :22:27.against world with one of the best managers

:22:28. > :22:29.in the world. Elsewhere tonight, Middlesbrough

:22:30. > :22:32.travel to Derby in the Championship to face their most successful

:22:33. > :22:35.manager Steve McClaren. Back in the Premier League it's the first of two

:22:36. > :22:38.away trips for Newcastle. Swansea first up this evening, followed by

:22:39. > :22:42.Manchester United at the weekend. Mark Tulip looks ahead.

:22:43. > :22:45.It's amazing what a settled team and four wins in a row can do for a

:22:46. > :22:48.side's confidence and league position. After an inconsistent and

:22:49. > :22:51.frustrating start to the season, sixth placed Newcastle face a couple

:22:52. > :22:59.of tough away matches, starting in South Wales, just one point shy of

:23:00. > :23:04.the Champions League places. It is great in Reading keep the run going.

:23:05. > :23:08.I think going to Manchester United, you would like that momentum. You

:23:09. > :23:12.would not like to get beat at Swansea and lose our momentum. It
