:00:07. > :00:09.Welcome to Friday's Look North. In the programme tonight... An
:00:10. > :00:14.investigation, after a second major town centre fire in a month.
:00:15. > :00:24.A warning about the dangers of gambling from a former Newcastle
:00:25. > :00:27.player who lost the lot. When you have earned over ?7 million in your
:00:28. > :00:32.professional career, you should obviously not be bankrupt.
:00:33. > :00:35.Drink to that. The Prime Minister announces a scheme to boost business
:00:36. > :00:39.in the Tees Valley. And why festive lights in Thirsk
:00:40. > :00:41.could be switched off in a row over an unpaid bill.
:00:42. > :00:44.In sport, the region's most successful club is on the brink of
:00:45. > :00:48.yet another Cup final. And in the Premier League, as
:00:49. > :00:51.Newcastle look to build on that historic win at Old Trafford, can
:00:52. > :01:15.Sunderland start planning the Great Escape?
:01:16. > :01:19.It is the second major fire in a month.
:01:20. > :01:22.Tonight as the region's fire`fighters walked out on yet
:01:23. > :01:25.another strike, Durham Police have revealed they are treating a major
:01:26. > :01:29.fire in Stanley town centre today as suspicious. The blaze is the second
:01:30. > :01:31.in Front Street within a month. One fire`fighter was injured in the
:01:32. > :01:33.incident which started early this morning. The fire is being treated
:01:34. > :01:35.as suspicious. Another major fire in the start of
:01:36. > :01:40.Stanley, firefighters were called this morning where they found a
:01:41. > :01:46.severe blaze. Nine fire engines and over 40 firefighters arrived at the
:01:47. > :01:49.scene. It is a busy street, we are trying to keep everyone is safe. A
:01:50. > :01:53.lot of the buildings are close together, so the fire crews are
:01:54. > :01:57.trying to make sure the fire doesn't spread into any of the other
:01:58. > :02:04.premises, we need to protect the businesses that have not been
:02:05. > :02:06.impacted. We are successful in doing that so far. We have taken one
:02:07. > :02:09.firefighter to hospital with an injured leg. That happened very
:02:10. > :02:13.early, but no members of the public have been injured. This evening,
:02:14. > :02:18.firefighters were still at the scene. This is the third major blaze
:02:19. > :02:23.on this street in the last few years. Five years ago, a row of
:02:24. > :02:31.shops just here was destroyed by a blaze, and just about 500 metres
:02:32. > :02:35.away, another major blaze. That blaze in November which started in a
:02:36. > :02:40.Chinese takeaway destroyed a large Edwardian building, but the police
:02:41. > :02:45.say there is no link between the fires. It is a bad blow to the area
:02:46. > :02:51.just before Christmas. The market will continue tomorrow, and traders
:02:52. > :02:54.remain upbeat. It should not have any impact, if anything, it could be
:02:55. > :03:00.a positive boost, and that it will remind the local people that Stanley
:03:01. > :03:05.is here, it is strong and they have got something they can cherish. We
:03:06. > :03:13.will always recover, we are a very robust set of traders, there is a
:03:14. > :03:17.lot of bad things around, but I'm sure we will bounce back. The police
:03:18. > :03:21.are looking for information from anyone that knows anything as soon
:03:22. > :03:24.as possible. And members of the Fire Brigades
:03:25. > :03:28.Union are taking industrial action this evening, the fifth strike by
:03:29. > :03:31.members since the end of September. Staff walked out at six o'clock
:03:32. > :03:38.until ten, in a dispute over changes to pension plans and working times.
:03:39. > :03:40.He earned millions and then lost the lot. Former Newcastle United winger
:03:41. > :03:46.Keith Gillespie became addicted to gambling during his playing career,
:03:47. > :03:50.and ended up bankrupt. Gillespie thinks there are others still in the
:03:51. > :03:59.game with a hidden betting problem. Now clubs in our region are fighting
:04:00. > :04:04.back, but is it enough? It's a cup tie. And Newcastle are
:04:05. > :04:09.3`0 up. Yet their Irish winger is in no mood to celebrate. Because he's
:04:10. > :04:15.backed his own team to win at that score. There's another goal, the bet
:04:16. > :04:23.is lost. He's wishing he'd asked his team mates to slacken off.
:04:24. > :04:27.Straightaway I was thinking about the 50 grand that could have been
:04:28. > :04:32.coming my way, and it had slipped away. It was part of the slippery
:04:33. > :04:36.slope by the Sun, where were chasing the big money. Keith Gillespie says
:04:37. > :04:45.he was ignorant of football betting rules and never did it again. But he
:04:46. > :04:49.lost millions on the horses. When you have earned
:04:50. > :04:54.your professional career, you should not end up and cropped, obviously. I
:04:55. > :04:58.am a classic egg sample of what's not to do. `` end up and cropped.
:04:59. > :05:05.And E.ON player that is earning good money, they would be advised to read
:05:06. > :05:09.about the downfall of what can happen. `` any young player that is
:05:10. > :05:13.earning. And Keith was far from alone. Last month Michael Chopra
:05:14. > :05:17.told a court tens of thousands of pounds were gambled in card schools
:05:18. > :05:20.on the Magpies team coach. His debt was so bad, he later moved to
:05:21. > :05:25.Sunderland to claim the signing on fee. He has been banned from horse
:05:26. > :05:32.racing after a corruption enquiry in that sport. I know that for me,
:05:33. > :05:37.gambling reflected some of the aspects of professional foot wall
:05:38. > :05:43.for me. One minute I would be on cloud nine, the next minute, I was
:05:44. > :05:49.lost. Things were really kind of down in the dumps. I would say that
:05:50. > :05:57.gambling is the main kind of choice within football. Go to any football
:05:58. > :06:00.ground and the links between gambling and the sport could hardly
:06:01. > :06:05.be more obvious, but there is a growing awareness within foot wall
:06:06. > :06:12.of the need to educate players of the potential dangers. `` within the
:06:13. > :06:20.game. Here at Hartlepool, the players are lectured and advised by
:06:21. > :06:26.a gambling charity. It is eye opening how easy you could fall into
:06:27. > :06:29.the trap. We are taught about stuff in our game, but outside of it,
:06:30. > :06:34.things like horse racing and stuff, we are not fully educated on that
:06:35. > :06:37.kind of gambling, it is just the football that we would be worried
:06:38. > :06:43.about. It makes you think about your decisions and what you would do if
:06:44. > :06:47.you fell into that situation. For some, it is already too late, the
:06:48. > :06:56.footballer that took on the bookies and ended up broke.
:06:57. > :06:59.Peter is here now, now, many viewers might struggle to have sympathy with
:07:00. > :07:05.him, because he has lost all of that money. I think this story is quite
:07:06. > :07:10.sad, he has got all of this money, he is 20 years old, he comes to
:07:11. > :07:14.Newcastle, he has got it made, but what he is saying is, he did not
:07:15. > :07:16.understand the value of money, and sadly the money his talent had
:07:17. > :07:22.earned him was squandered to gambling. The deeper worry is that
:07:23. > :07:28.it could lead them into deeper trouble. Yes, there is something
:07:29. > :07:34.potentially sinister, I spoke to a member of a sporting charity and I
:07:35. > :07:39.said to him, he was a foot or, he had trouble with gambling, does that
:07:40. > :07:43.not make you more susceptible to corruption. `` he was a football
:07:44. > :07:47.player. He said, he was never offered any money, but he said it is
:07:48. > :07:51.possible he could have taken the money back then, because your moral
:07:52. > :07:57.compass becomes squandered, and that is the slippery slope we can get
:07:58. > :08:04.into. A very frank interview. The light ack row `` thank you, Peter.
:08:05. > :08:12."A death that could have been prevented." The reaction from the
:08:13. > :08:16.family of a Carlisle man who died in an industrial oven at the city's
:08:17. > :08:19.Pirelli tyre factory. A jury at the inquest into the death of George
:08:20. > :08:24.Falder today concluded his death in September last year was an accident.
:08:25. > :08:27.For the family and friends of George Falder, this has been a gruelling
:08:28. > :08:30.week. Four days of evidence into an horrific death inside an industrial
:08:31. > :08:36.oven used in the production of tyres. What exactly happened to
:08:37. > :08:40.48`year`old George Falder may never be known, his family accept that.
:08:41. > :08:44.But they were sure all along that he had not killed himself, and
:08:45. > :08:47.afterwards gave this reaction. The family would earnestly hope that
:08:48. > :08:52.lessons can be learned from this tragedy and it will act as a wake`up
:08:53. > :08:58.call for all employers and all involved in helping the. In this
:08:59. > :09:07.case, the simple procedure of shining torch and putting 80 gun
:09:08. > :09:20.check list would have prevented this door being close on a human life. ``
:09:21. > :09:25.and putting a take on a check list. This case is still the subject of an
:09:26. > :09:28.ongoing investigation by the Health and Safety Executive, and whether
:09:29. > :09:33.any action is taken against the company is unclear. But the coroner
:09:34. > :09:37.could also make recommendations that he believes will strengthen safety
:09:38. > :09:40.in an industrial environment. In a statement, Pirelli said... "Everyone
:09:41. > :09:43.at Pirelli extends their condolences to Mr Falder's family. The
:09:44. > :09:46.management and staff at Pirelli are committed to ensuring high levels of
:09:47. > :09:51.health and safety for all those working at the Company". Changes to
:09:52. > :09:55.working practices in the department where George Falder died have now
:09:56. > :09:59.been made. Lighting has been improved and checks must be carried
:10:00. > :10:07.out before the door on the autoclave can be closed.
:10:08. > :10:10.The Prime Minister visited Teesside today to seal an agreement he
:10:11. > :10:14.believes will create thousands of jobs in the area. Under what's
:10:15. > :10:17.called a city deal, the area's councils and business leaders will
:10:18. > :10:21.get more powers and some funding to bring in extra investment. But as
:10:22. > :10:28.our Political Editor reports, not everyone thinks the deal on offer is
:10:29. > :10:31.one worth celebrating. Tetley Tea in Eaglescliffe, the
:10:32. > :10:36.biggest manufacturer of tea bags in the world. But David Cameron arrived
:10:37. > :10:39.at the factory with his own heady brew to offer. A deal he hopes will
:10:40. > :10:48.create more successful Teesside businesses like this. It should
:10:49. > :10:53.bring another 3500 jobs to Stockton, that also it will unlock millions of
:10:54. > :10:57.investment using the waste heat in the chemicals industry to heat
:10:58. > :11:03.homes, businesses and other premises, potentially cutting bills
:11:04. > :11:06.by ten to 15%. It is a good, collaborative effort, a partnership
:11:07. > :11:09.for growth either councils and the local enterprise partnerships.
:11:10. > :11:18.Unlike the jobs of these Tetley staff though, none of the promised
:11:19. > :11:23.posts exist as yet. We have seen ?300 million of regional growth
:11:24. > :11:28.invested in the north`east, and we have seen figures on construction
:11:29. > :11:32.that are encouraging. This takes time. The fact is, we have a
:11:33. > :11:36.long`term plan to turn around the economy and need to stick to this
:11:37. > :11:45.plan to deliver growth, jobs and investment and they may need in the
:11:46. > :11:49.Richmond. It is not just me he needs to convince, but also the voters.
:11:50. > :11:55.Some people say this might not happen quick enough to make a
:11:56. > :12:02.significant affect for those on the streets. This deal does very little,
:12:03. > :12:05.it is jammed together, there are lots of promises for tomorrow, but
:12:06. > :12:10.they need more power to move things forward. I had expected much more.
:12:11. > :12:13.The local authorities are working very closely together I do not know
:12:14. > :12:18.what they will achieve that would not have been achieved anyway. Those
:12:19. > :12:24.charged with making this deal a reality believe that jobs and
:12:25. > :12:27.investment can be delivered. Clearly we will deliver this, commit
:12:28. > :12:31.ourselves to deliver this, so it is right that people hold us to it. We
:12:32. > :12:36.will have the actions we need to take, the timetable we're talking at
:12:37. > :12:42.achieving, and I'm confident that we can achieve that. I do not want to
:12:43. > :12:50.stand back and hope it is going to happen, I want the government is to
:12:51. > :12:55.help to make it happen. The Prime Minister will hope that local voters
:12:56. > :13:00.will be stirred, this factory is in a seat, a marginal seat that the
:13:01. > :13:06.Conservatives will hope to win at the next election.
:13:07. > :13:10.Businesses in Whitby have started to tot up the financial cost of last
:13:11. > :13:13.week's flooding. Repair bills are estimated to be in millions of
:13:14. > :13:16.pounds, with just one pub having to spend a quarter of a million on
:13:17. > :13:20.refitting the property. This scene in the hotel in Whitby
:13:21. > :13:27.last Thursday as the tide came sweeping in. As a consequence, today
:13:28. > :13:33.everything has to go. Anything that the salt water has touched, tables,
:13:34. > :13:41.chairs, fridges, any stock, the coolers, and eating that was on the
:13:42. > :13:45.bottom bar. The pub only opened nine months ago after a ?6 million
:13:46. > :13:48.refit, and they are replacing everything in the cellar and the
:13:49. > :13:53.ground floor, and that will cost at least a quarter of ?1 million. Other
:13:54. > :14:04.businesses around the square were badly hit also. Spec Savers lost 500
:14:05. > :14:07.pairs of glasses. And this charity for the disabled saw its store
:14:08. > :14:16.flooded out and most of its wheelchair fleet lost. This is a
:14:17. > :14:20.very busy area in summer, but in the winter, it is not as bad, but unless
:14:21. > :14:27.we get them sorted out quickly, that could be problems in the future. The
:14:28. > :14:35.local area has rallied round, this church hall has become the store for
:14:36. > :14:40.lots of equipment and bedding that the locals can help themselves to.
:14:41. > :14:44.This is what we do when things like this happen, as locals, we help each
:14:45. > :14:48.other out. It is lovely to see the temple in together and we have met
:14:49. > :14:55.some individuals that now would be friends for a long time. `` it is
:14:56. > :14:58.lovely to see people pull together. The way things are looking now, it
:14:59. > :15:03.is hard to imagine the high winds and high floods that have come by.
:15:04. > :15:11.Plenty more to come in tonight's Look North. Why the lights could go
:15:12. > :15:16.out on one town's Christmas celebrations.
:15:17. > :15:24.And staying reasonably mild over the weekend, but we pay the price with
:15:25. > :15:29.some wet and windy conditions. All of the weather details for you later
:15:30. > :15:32.on. A couple from Chester`le`Street are
:15:33. > :15:35.celebrating an early Christmas present after they matched six
:15:36. > :15:39.Lottery numbers to win one and a half million pounds. David Younger
:15:40. > :15:43.and his wife Elizabeth, who are both 59, used the same numbers that David
:15:44. > :15:48.picked 20 years ago when the Lottery started. David handed in his notice
:15:49. > :16:01.the following day and is looking forward to an early retirement. Why
:16:02. > :16:04.not?! Enjoy at! `` enjoyed it. They were switched on to mark the
:16:05. > :16:08.season of goodwill, but now traders in Thirsk fear their Xmas lights
:16:09. > :16:11.could be switched off. They've been landed with a ?10,000 bill. The
:16:12. > :16:15.traders can't afford to pay it and say a possible computer error could
:16:16. > :16:21.be to blame. This contained some flashing images.
:16:22. > :16:28.The festive lights are on, but the Christmas spirit is being dampened.
:16:29. > :16:31.And expect to electricity bill. It normally costs ?800 for the six`week
:16:32. > :16:38.Christmas season, but for last year's display, a bailout of the
:16:39. > :16:42.delivered of more than ?10,000. It is thought computer mistakes are to
:16:43. > :16:46.blame, but despite that, the lighting is in threatened with
:16:47. > :16:53.disconnection unless it is being paid. It is a dark cloud hanging
:16:54. > :16:57.over the town. We have excellent community spirit, we just want the
:16:58. > :17:01.electricity company to show some Christmas spirit. The big switch on
:17:02. > :17:05.happened at the end of November, an event that is organised by the
:17:06. > :17:09.district business Association, but despite its members making and thus
:17:10. > :17:16.calls to try and sort the problem, they have now been served with two
:17:17. > :17:22.disconnection measures. `` endless calls. We have been trying to get an
:17:23. > :17:27.answer, trying to get a reduced bill, but we cannot get one, they
:17:28. > :17:30.say it is a computer built. According to the company, the matter
:17:31. > :17:34.is still being investigated, but in a statement, they say that they are
:17:35. > :17:38.working hard to resolve the issue and do not want to switch off the
:17:39. > :17:44.Christmas lights. In the town, the patient is running thin. `` patience
:17:45. > :17:51.is running thin. You just want to have a good celebration of
:17:52. > :18:00.Christmas. I think, bah, humbug, to switch it off, they might find some
:18:01. > :18:06.people change to lamp posts! For now, the lighter still on, but there
:18:07. > :18:11.are fears that the plug may be pulled at any given time. `` these
:18:12. > :18:21.lights are still on. Now, all of the sports news.
:18:22. > :18:24.Starting with football now. Newcastle are on a high after
:18:25. > :18:27.beating Manchester United at Old Trafford last week, for the first
:18:28. > :18:30.time in more than 40 years. Tomorrow, they take on Southampton
:18:31. > :18:34.at St James Park, with Alan Pardew's former club just one place and three
:18:35. > :18:37.points behind the Magpies. At the other end of the table, it's crunch
:18:38. > :18:40.time for Sunderland who're five points adrift at the bottom of the
:18:41. > :18:43.Premier League. They're at fellow`strugglers West Ham tomorrow,
:18:44. > :18:47.and three points is a must. Sunderland are the only team in the
:18:48. > :18:50.league without an away win this season but West Ham aren't doing
:18:51. > :18:53.much better. The pressure is mounting on Hammers boss Sam
:18:54. > :18:57.Allardyce and with both teams desperate for points there'll be
:18:58. > :19:02.plenty of anxiety at Upton Park. The game normally, it is going to be
:19:03. > :19:07.difficult, but I am sure that for the players on the pitch, it would
:19:08. > :19:13.be a difficult game, but we always talk about pressure and how they can
:19:14. > :19:19.deal with that. It would be a. We will see which team is in the better
:19:20. > :19:22.form. `` it will be a test. The Black Cats must capitalise on the
:19:23. > :19:25.absence of key West Ham players including suspended captain Kevin
:19:26. > :19:29.Nolan. And in a game where passion and commitment are called for Lee
:19:30. > :19:32.Cattermole could be vital but with his poor discipline Gus Poyet must
:19:33. > :19:35.decide whether it's worth taking the risk particularly with referee Andre
:19:36. > :19:42.Mariner in charge who sent Cattermole off against Hull.
:19:43. > :19:46.It is worrying when you are at the bottom, but when you are playing and
:19:47. > :19:53.you're down to ten, there is no way you can win with what you need it is
:19:54. > :19:58.a sure that these risks don't happen and those are there on the pitch on
:19:59. > :20:00.Saturday. If Sunderland are to double their points tally by
:20:01. > :20:04.Christmas victories over West Ham and Norwich are crucial. From now on
:20:05. > :20:07.every game is a cup final, there's no longer any hiding place. I
:20:08. > :20:09.totally agree, they are must win games.
:20:10. > :20:13.You know what it's like when you feel you've done a good job, and you
:20:14. > :20:16.maybe don't get the rewards you deserve. Well, while it's three
:20:17. > :20:19.years since Alan Pardew was sacked by Southampton, the pain of that
:20:20. > :20:23.dismissal still hurts. Yes, it does, I felt an injustice to lose my
:20:24. > :20:28.job there. I am not the first manager to say that. I'm looking
:20:29. > :20:33.forward to seeing some of my old players that have done brilliantly.
:20:34. > :20:37.They were all there in the first division with me. That side of it I
:20:38. > :20:43.look forward to seeing, but certainly, on a personal level, it
:20:44. > :20:47.is a game I really want to win. And while last week the Magpies cashed
:20:48. > :20:51.in on what was a good time to play Manchester United, this may also be
:20:52. > :20:54.a good time to play Southampton. 15 million pound man, Danny Osvaldo
:20:55. > :20:58.finally hit a bit of form, to help stop a run of three straight
:20:59. > :21:01.defeats, but it's clear what's on Newcastle's Christmas wish`list.
:21:02. > :21:07.Three wins in the next three games, hopefully. A couple of tough games
