:00:00. > :00:00.three times faster than wages. That is all from BBC News at

:00:00. > :00:10.Hello and welcome to Look North. In the programme tonight: The storms

:00:11. > :00:12.keep on coming, flood warnings in place for coastal communities in

:00:13. > :00:15.Cumbria. Also tonight, police release more

:00:16. > :00:19.information about the death of a boxer at a New Year party.

:00:20. > :00:25.Racing the tide, rescue services pull a woman from her car after it

:00:26. > :00:29.lands on rocks at Whitley Bay. And The Railway Man, we meet the

:00:30. > :00:33.stars of the new film about a Northumberland prisoner of war's

:00:34. > :00:36.search for his tormentor. And in sport, Durham's Scott

:00:37. > :00:40.Borthwick hopes to start the new year in style with an England debut

:00:41. > :00:43.in tonight's final Ashes Test. But no New Year celebrations for our

:00:44. > :00:57.football managers, who began 2014 with a whimper rather than a bang.

:00:58. > :01:04.Coastal communities in Cumbria have been put on flood alert, as the next

:01:05. > :01:07.storm system bears down on the west. The risk is at its highest tomorrow,

:01:08. > :01:14.due to a combination of strong winds and very high tides. The Environment

:01:15. > :01:18.Agency has issued a flooding warning for the Cumbrian coast running from

:01:19. > :01:20.Gretna at the top of the Solway to St Bees Head. Mark McAlindon

:01:21. > :01:23.reports. Storms from the Atlantic have

:01:24. > :01:27.battered Britain in recent weeks, sometimes with tragic consequences.

:01:28. > :01:32.One man was swept out to sea in Cornwall, while a woman drowned off

:01:33. > :01:40.the coast in Devon. Here in Cumbria, there are warnings that coastal

:01:41. > :01:43.flooding is likely tomorrow. We currently have two flood warnings in

:01:44. > :01:47.place for the west coast of Cumbria, one from Gretna down to

:01:48. > :01:51.select, and another down to St Bees Head, and the remainder of the coast

:01:52. > :01:56.remains on flood alert, so the people in those areas need to take

:01:57. > :01:59.immediate action to prepare for flooding and be aware of flooding.

:02:00. > :02:02.In Whitehaven, people are braced for the worst, but it's hoped water

:02:03. > :02:09.management in the harbour can help prevent flooding elsewhere. What we

:02:10. > :02:13.can do is actually lower the level of water in the inner harbour, which

:02:14. > :02:18.means that the run`off from the rest of the town and the surrounding

:02:19. > :02:23.countryside can be absorbed into the inner harbour. So when the tide goes

:02:24. > :02:28.out in the outer harbour, we can let water out again, shut the gates and

:02:29. > :02:31.be prepared for the next heavy rainfall or tidal surge. In Cumbria,

:02:32. > :02:35.the coastline is a popular place, and stormy seas make for a

:02:36. > :02:41.spectacular sight. But the advice is it would be foolish to get too

:02:42. > :02:44.close. The police income rear are

:02:45. > :02:50.especially keen that people stay away from coastal paths and the

:02:51. > :02:53.foreshore tomorrow if conditions that are predicted materialise. ``

:02:54. > :02:57.the police in Cumbria. They believe there is an increased risk of people

:02:58. > :02:59.being swept and it into the sea with tragic consequences. Rain is

:03:00. > :03:00.predicted overnight, but strong winds and high tides will be at

:03:01. > :03:14.their peak tomorrow lunchtime. Well, Hannah Bayman is with me now.

:03:15. > :03:19.Hannah, why is there so much concern about our coastal communities in

:03:20. > :03:22.Cumbria? It is a number of elements coming together, let's take a look

:03:23. > :03:26.at this pressure sequence, a deep area of low pressure heading from

:03:27. > :03:30.the west across the UK through tonight and into tomorrow morning.

:03:31. > :03:34.That will cause very strong onshore winds, but it is combined with a

:03:35. > :03:40.very high spring tides tomorrow lunchtime, that makes the weather

:03:41. > :03:44.event that could cause coastal flooding. I will be back with a full

:03:45. > :03:48.forecast later in the programme. The family of a former boxer who was

:03:49. > :03:51.killed with an ice axe at a New Year's Eve party say they're

:03:52. > :03:54.heartbroken and devastated by his death. 31`year`old Mark Denton from

:03:55. > :03:57.Hartlepool was killed on Tuesday night despite brave attempts by

:03:58. > :04:01.partygoers who desperately tried to save his life. One teenager and two

:04:02. > :04:04.men in their twenties have been arrested on suspicion of murder, and

:04:05. > :04:13.are being questioned by detectives. Stuart Whincup reports.

:04:14. > :04:17.Mark Denton has been one of the country's best amateur boxers and

:04:18. > :04:20.was well`known in Hartlepool. He had been at a party here when he was

:04:21. > :04:26.attacked with an ice axe in front of guests. He died a short time later.

:04:27. > :04:31.For a second day, forensics officers have been at the house while friends

:04:32. > :04:36.continued to leave flowers outside. He was a lovely person, he was

:04:37. > :04:42.dedicated, he put as much effort in as any boxer I have had in the gym.

:04:43. > :04:46.A lot of my other boxers fed off that, and it is just tragic, like

:04:47. > :04:51.you say, what has happened. He was the heart and soul of the party as

:04:52. > :04:55.well, he would get on with anybody. A 17`year`old male and two men in

:04:56. > :04:59.their 20s have been arrested on suspicion of murder. Detectives are

:05:00. > :05:03.offering support to guests at the party who witnessed the brutal

:05:04. > :05:07.attack. A number of people were trying to help him, but people were

:05:08. > :05:11.in a state of chaos and fear, trying to leave the address. Police have

:05:12. > :05:16.tried to speak to those at the time, but I have no doubt that there

:05:17. > :05:19.will be people who have left who may have very significant information

:05:20. > :05:23.into this inquiry. Hundreds of tributes have been added to a

:05:24. > :05:28.Facebook page set up in memory of the former boxer. Late this

:05:29. > :05:30.afternoon, his family released a statement saying they were

:05:31. > :05:35.absolutely heartbroken and devastated to lose him in such a

:05:36. > :05:39.tragic way. They said he was a much loved son, brother and uncle. He

:05:40. > :05:50.will be greatly missed by everyone who knew him, they added.

:05:51. > :05:56.More news now. TheyA man found with stab wounds in Carlisle is fighting

:05:57. > :06:04.for life in hospital. stab wounds in Carlisle is fighting

:06:05. > :06:06.were called to an address in Raffles Avenue early yesterday and found the

:06:07. > :06:08.23`year`old with serious injuries. He was taken to the Cumberland

:06:09. > :06:10.Infirmary and is now at the Freeman Hospital in Newcastle. Eight men,

:06:11. > :06:16.whose ages ranges from 23 to still being questioned.

:06:17. > :06:19.Police say they're hoping someone returning from a Christmas break

:06:20. > :06:22.might have the clue that will lead them to a missing Northumberland

:06:23. > :06:25.woman. It's two weeks since 65`year`old Janis Hall was last seen

:06:26. > :06:28.after leaving her home in the village of Catton. It's possible

:06:29. > :06:31.somebody might have seen her after that, but because they've been out

:06:32. > :06:34.of the region, they don't realise there is a search under way. Police

:06:35. > :06:39.also say they've been overwhelmed with offers of help from the public.

:06:40. > :06:43.Everyone who we have spoken to has been falling over themselves to do

:06:44. > :06:46.what ever they can, we had the Salvation Army out of searching on

:06:47. > :06:50.Monday, and obviously we give them guidance as to what they should and

:06:51. > :06:55.shouldn't do, but everyone is very concerned and want to come home.

:06:56. > :06:59.Equally, the family over Christmas and New Year, it has been a

:07:00. > :07:01.difficult time. We are all out there looking for her.

:07:02. > :07:04.Investigations are continuing after a car crashed through railings and

:07:05. > :07:07.landed on its roof near St Mary's Lighthouse at Whitley Bay. The

:07:08. > :07:11.emergency services had to free an injured woman from the vehicle as

:07:12. > :07:13.the tide moved in around them. Amy Lea reports.

:07:14. > :07:20.This was the dramatic scene just after midnight in Whitley Bay. The

:07:21. > :07:23.car you can see here crashed through railings at the foot of St Mary's

:07:24. > :07:29.Lighthouse south car park and onto the beach below. One of the main

:07:30. > :07:33.concerns for rescuers last night was not only the cold, the wind and the

:07:34. > :07:37.dark, but also the position of the car, around about here, and the

:07:38. > :07:40.advancing tide, which meant water was lapping around the car. Dave

:07:41. > :07:43.Bell, a captain with the Tynemouth Volunteer life Brigade, was there

:07:44. > :07:54.helped by the police, the fire brigade and paramedics. We were on a

:07:55. > :07:58.rising tide, it was on its way in, and at one point the waves were

:07:59. > :08:02.splashing on the back of the car. Obviously, we are in a situation in

:08:03. > :08:07.this location where the tide can run around behind us, so we have to

:08:08. > :08:11.ensure that the rescuers were kept safe. The woman was the only person

:08:12. > :08:13.in the car at the time and suffered spinal and pelvis interviews. She

:08:14. > :08:22.was released from hospital earlier this afternoon. The paramedics and

:08:23. > :08:28.the Fire Brigade actually put her on to a spinal board and recovered her

:08:29. > :08:31.from the car. They packaged her up, and then we physically carried her

:08:32. > :08:35.along the beach, up the stairs at the far end, trying not to fall in

:08:36. > :08:39.the pool at the bottom of the stairs. And then up to the waiting

:08:40. > :08:42.ambulance. Police say they are continuing their investigations into

:08:43. > :08:45.how the car came to smash through the barrier and onto the sand and

:08:46. > :08:49.are appealing for any witnesses. But they have praised the work of the

:08:50. > :08:58.rescue teams, who say this is one lady who has had a very lucky escape

:08:59. > :09:01.indeed. Police searching for a missing

:09:02. > :09:04.mother of three who is believed to have been murdered say they'll

:09:05. > :09:07.continue the hunt, as they did for the Moors murder victims.

:09:08. > :09:10.25`year`old Rania Alayed vanished in early June, but extensive searches

:09:11. > :09:15.of around the A19 near Thirsk in North Yorkshire have drawn a blank.

:09:16. > :09:19.Now police say it's possible Rania's body may have been moved. Julie

:09:20. > :09:23.Smith reports. Since last July, this stretch of A19

:09:24. > :09:28.near Thirsk has been at the centre of a cross`border police

:09:29. > :09:32.investigation. Rania Alayed is thought to have been taken in a

:09:33. > :09:35.white camper van in the early hours of June eighth from Manchester to

:09:36. > :09:41.this area, where police believe her body was buried or concealed. Police

:09:42. > :09:46.think the camper van pulled over on a northbound lay`by of the A19. But

:09:47. > :09:49.extensive searches of land, including the use of forensic

:09:50. > :10:00.experts and military expertise, have drawn a blank. It took us three or

:10:01. > :10:04.four weeks before we knew Rania was dead, from the time that she was

:10:05. > :10:08.killed. Now, we believe her body was brought here, and the question I got

:10:09. > :10:14.to ask is, as she be moved within that period? You might have seen

:10:15. > :10:16.somebody in one of these fields, these Labour eyes, something

:10:17. > :10:21.suspicious, and we would like to hear from those people. `` these

:10:22. > :10:24.lay`bys. Today Rania's uncle, Ali Aydi, was shown around the lay`bys

:10:25. > :10:27.where police have been searching. He didn't speak to the press but in a

:10:28. > :10:37.statement appealed to anyone with information to come forward. We have

:10:38. > :10:44.had dogs out, as well as line searches, digging holes just to try

:10:45. > :10:48.and get any gases off. But we have not found Rania. Look at the Moors

:10:49. > :10:52.murderer is, we will not rest, we will revisit and revisit. By no

:10:53. > :10:58.means is this finished, this part of it is finished, this had surge of

:10:59. > :11:03.these lay`bys. Two men have been charged with the murder and one with

:11:04. > :11:06.perverting the course of justice. The cost to the National Health

:11:07. > :11:09.Service of patients missing appointments is running to tens of

:11:10. > :11:12.millions of pounds, according to figures out today. Six North East

:11:13. > :11:15.health trusts, including Gateshead, Sunderland and Newcastle, say 600

:11:16. > :11:23.people a day failed to turn up at hospitals last year, at an estimated

:11:24. > :11:30.cost of ?24m. NHS managers also highlighted the knock`on effect on

:11:31. > :11:34.waiting lists. Some of us call it the hole in the

:11:35. > :11:37.wall, others the cash machine. Either way, it's often the easiest

:11:38. > :11:40.way to get your money. Unless, that is, you live in Chopwell near

:11:41. > :11:43.Gateshead. The village's only free cash machine has been broken for

:11:44. > :11:46.weeks. Now one local supermarket says unless it's fixed, they could

:11:47. > :11:50.go out of business. Here's our political correspondent, Mark

:11:51. > :11:56.Denten. Chopwell, and a local convenience

:11:57. > :11:59.store. If you have got any money left after Christmas and New Year,

:12:00. > :12:03.this place as the only free cash machine in the village. Or not so

:12:04. > :12:07.conveniently. Because the blank screen tells it all, it's out of

:12:08. > :12:10.action and has been for weeks, and Lorraine, who runs the shop, says

:12:11. > :12:13.that's threatening her business.And ironically the shop is also a

:12:14. > :12:17.business customer of Chopwell's Lloyds Bank. We have lost 50% of our

:12:18. > :12:22.turnover in the last few weeks. People are not spending the money,

:12:23. > :12:28.so we don't have the cash flow, and we are very, very close to running

:12:29. > :12:30.out of money. How long have you got? Probably five days. And for

:12:31. > :12:36.customers, frustration. It is the only place

:12:37. > :12:40.around here that has been free cash machine. I am on benefits, and I

:12:41. > :12:47.cannot afford to keep taking money out when it is costing ?1.85 a time

:12:48. > :12:51.to get the money. Ironically, the shop is a business customer of the

:12:52. > :12:55.local Lloyds bank. Just last week, they ran out of money themselves

:12:56. > :12:59.because obviously people cannot get the money from our cash machine, so

:13:00. > :13:04.they have gone to the bank and they ran out of money, so they asked us

:13:05. > :13:07.to pay our takings into give money out.

:13:08. > :13:11.The local MP says a bank still nearly a third owned by the taxpayer

:13:12. > :13:16.should do better. It is about public money, we have given them any to get

:13:17. > :13:19.back on an even keel after the recklessness of the last decade and

:13:20. > :13:22.yet they are treating people like this, ludicrous, it is not on.

:13:23. > :13:25.Lloyds Bank say they've had problems with intermittent telecoms issues

:13:26. > :13:31.and will replace certain parts today.

:13:32. > :13:39.Still to come tonight, Dawn will be here with the sports news. And we'll

:13:40. > :13:42.hear from the family of this loving couple who died within hours of each

:13:43. > :13:47.other over Christmas but left this as their legacy.

:13:48. > :13:50.Next week, The Railway Man opens in cinemas across the country. Starring

:13:51. > :13:56.Nicole Kidman and Colin Firth, it's the true story of a Northumberland

:13:57. > :13:59.man, Eric Lomax. In 1942, Eric was sent to a Japanese prisoner`of`war

:14:00. > :14:04.camp, where he was regularly tortured. To help ease his suffering

:14:05. > :14:09.from post`traumatic stress, his wife Patti helped him track down and

:14:10. > :14:13.confront his tormentor. Our reporter Sharon Barbour has been to meet the

:14:14. > :14:21.stars of the film, and to talk to Patti in her Berwick home for this

:14:22. > :14:23.Look North Report. Eric Lomax from Berwick in

:14:24. > :14:29.Northumberland was a World War II prisoner. He was forced to work on

:14:30. > :14:32.the Thai Burma railway and was horrifically tortured. His book, The

:14:33. > :14:42.Railway Man, has now been turned into a movie with Hollywood stars.

:14:43. > :14:47.That is it, sir. Bombing Germany 24 hours a day! His experiences lead to

:14:48. > :14:49.decades of nightmares and post`traumatic stress disorder but

:14:50. > :14:55.then he learned one of his tormentors was still alive, and he

:14:56. > :15:00.set off to confront him. I suspected, and Eric told me later,

:15:01. > :15:05.that I had been correct that he really wish to have his revenge. The

:15:06. > :15:11.meeting was filmed by a documentary maker.

:15:12. > :15:18.You are very well, that is very good. I am very sorry, we have done

:15:19. > :15:26.very wrong things for you. It is kind of you to say so. In the film,

:15:27. > :15:31.the older Eric Lomax is played by Colin Firth, his wife by Nicole

:15:32. > :15:37.Kidman, huge stars who spent time in the Berwick home. By sheer

:15:38. > :15:42.coincidence, there was a big picture of Colin and his wife on the front

:15:43. > :15:46.page of the Daily Telegraph. Eric realised, he turned to me and said,

:15:47. > :15:54.I think we have got somebody famous here! After meeting Eric and

:15:55. > :15:57.learning about how much he had suffered, the role was the hardest

:15:58. > :16:05.Colin Firth says he had ever taken on. I have rarely felt quite so out

:16:06. > :16:10.of my depth, or as inadequate to capturing and experience, just

:16:11. > :16:15.because it is so immense. My own limitations as an actor, combined

:16:16. > :16:19.with the limitations of film`making, 90 minutes to get a

:16:20. > :16:27.fragment of this, were all pretty overwhelming.

:16:28. > :16:31.To build such a railway would not be an act of engineering but barbarity.

:16:32. > :16:36.Playing the young Eric is a rising star, Jeremy Irvine. It is a role I

:16:37. > :16:42.have not quite got over yet. I know you are close to his wife,

:16:43. > :16:46.supporting each other. 100%! I have always said, you know, if she didn't

:16:47. > :16:51.like it, all of this is for nothing. She is one of the most remarkable

:16:52. > :16:55.women I have met. I am finding it very moving. Of course, the book by

:16:56. > :17:02.Eric Lomax, The Railway Man, now made into this film, a story of

:17:03. > :17:06.survival, a story of courage, but most of all a story of forgiveness.

:17:07. > :17:10.And already veterans invited to see the film ahead of its release have

:17:11. > :17:22.begun to share their experiences. I had the job, amongst others, to drag

:17:23. > :17:29.out the corpses. It was the worst thing I ever did. Have you told many

:17:30. > :17:33.people about your story? No, no, no! I think he would have felt immensely

:17:34. > :17:37.proud that he got the message across, not for himself, but for the

:17:38. > :17:43.other people that died on that railway. 90,000 people died. Eric

:17:44. > :17:48.forgave and said he would not forget his cruel torture. He died last

:17:49. > :17:58.year, but his story now lives on, a story of letting go of their hatred.

:17:59. > :18:02.EZ, sometimes the hating has to stop, and that, I think, summed up

:18:03. > :18:08.the man, and he has that inscribed on his headstone. The Railway Man

:18:09. > :18:15.opens in cinemas on January the tent.

:18:16. > :18:18.`` January the tent. An amazing story about an amazing

:18:19. > :18:21.man. And the actors Colin Firth and Jeremy Irvine will be at a special

:18:22. > :18:24.screening of The Railway Man in Berwick tomorrow evening ahead of

:18:25. > :18:28.the film's general release in the UK on the tenth of January.

:18:29. > :18:32.Now, here's a railway story of a very different kind. The

:18:33. > :18:35.granddaughter of an elderly couple who died within hours of each other

:18:36. > :18:38.over Christmas has told Look North they've left a living legacy which

:18:39. > :18:42.has brought pleasure to millions. Tom Salmon was the founder of the

:18:43. > :18:46.North Yorkshire Moors Railway, and his wife Erica is also credited with

:18:47. > :18:51.much of its success. Joe Inwood has been to speak to their family.

:18:52. > :18:56.They called in the father of the railway, 1969, this is Tom Salmon

:18:57. > :19:02.signing the contract that laid the groundwork for its foundation. And

:19:03. > :19:06.here he is just a few months ago, celebrating the 40th birthday of the

:19:07. > :19:11.North Yorkshire Moors railway. At his side, his wife of 66 years,

:19:12. > :19:16.arrogant. This project was his inspiration, and a huge part of

:19:17. > :19:20.their lives. From the 1960s until the end of their lives, it played a

:19:21. > :19:26.very big part in our lives. It was his vision to save the railway from

:19:27. > :19:30.the Beeching cuts. My Nano was the greatest support to him, and he

:19:31. > :19:34.always said that, so to both of them it was extremely important. And

:19:35. > :19:39.important for this part of Yorkshire. His vision eventually

:19:40. > :19:43.turned into the UK's most successful heritage railway, carrying hundreds

:19:44. > :19:54.of thousands of passengers and contributing millions to the local

:19:55. > :19:57.economy. Tom's legacy is the railway, and the effect it has had

:19:58. > :20:02.of thousands of peoples lives, it will never die and he will always be

:20:03. > :20:05.with us. Tom and Eric had been unwell for some time and both passed

:20:06. > :20:10.away over Christmas less than 24 hours aboard. Without them, this

:20:11. > :20:15.railway would not exist, the jobs, the tourism, the history. To mark

:20:16. > :20:26.all that, red wreaths for the father of this railway.

:20:27. > :20:32.A happy couple indeed. Time for the sport now. Not a great set of

:20:33. > :20:35.results for the New Year. A pretty miserable start all around!

:20:36. > :20:38.Not a happy start to 2014 for our Premier League clubs. Newcastle lost

:20:39. > :20:41.their second match running, as well as key players to injury and

:20:42. > :20:45.suspension. And if Sunderland fans thought the great escape was on,

:20:46. > :20:48.they may be thinking twice about that this evening. Mark Tulip's

:20:49. > :20:49.report begins at the Stadium of Light.

:20:50. > :20:52.The optimism of youth. And that young man will have enjoyed

:20:53. > :20:55.Sunderland's bright opening in one of those games against fellow

:20:56. > :20:58.strugglers they really needed to win. They certainly need Steven

:20:59. > :21:01.Fletcher to find his shooting boots soon. And the Black Cats could do

:21:02. > :21:04.without the likes of Lee Cattermole committing early howlers like this

:21:05. > :21:08.one. A gift for Aston Villa's Gabriel Agbonlahor, who scored the

:21:09. > :21:11.only goal on Wearside 14 months ago. It could have been worse without

:21:12. > :21:14.some sharp keeping from Vito Mannone. And even though there was a

:21:15. > :21:17.sense of injustice that Fabio Borini's knock`down for Emanuele

:21:18. > :21:20.Giaccherini to slot home was ruled offside, the truth is that Villa had

:21:21. > :21:24.most of the better chances. One step forward over Christmas, two steps

:21:25. > :21:31.back at New Year. No wonder Gus Poyet is fed up.

:21:32. > :21:39.Unfortunately, the mistake was against us, and after that too much

:21:40. > :21:42.in attention, too much nerves, too many people in a hurry. It wasn't to

:21:43. > :21:46.be. It was also a pretty miserable day,

:21:47. > :21:49.in every sense, at the Hawthorns, not too many treasured memories on

:21:50. > :21:52.those smartphones. Both Newcastle and West Brom were guilty of

:21:53. > :21:55.spurning chances when it looked easier to score. But this game

:21:56. > :21:59.wasn't destined to be goalless. Yes, Mathieu Debuchy got the ball, but

:22:00. > :21:59.his reckless challenge cost him a red card which

:22:00. > :22:05.Magpies did nearly hold until the end. But Tim Krul up`ended Vydra to

:22:06. > :22:08.concede the penalty that Saido Berahino converted, to leave the

:22:09. > :22:14.Magpies losing ground on the European places and losing key men.

:22:15. > :22:19.It is a huge blow for us, because he has been to reflect for us, and

:22:20. > :22:23.there was no malice in the tackle. But by the rules as they state, you

:22:24. > :22:28.cannot do that, and that did change the game, and we were getting tired

:22:29. > :22:31.and losing bodies, we lost Coloccini to an injury, so a tough day for us.

:22:32. > :22:36.Fabricio Coloccini's knee injury could, it's feared, sideline him for

:22:37. > :22:39.up to six weeks. Unfortunately, there wasn't much for

:22:40. > :22:43.fans of our other football teams to celebrate yesterday either, on what

:22:44. > :22:46.turned out to be a pretty dismal New Year's Day.

:22:47. > :22:48.It turned out to be another frustrating afternoon for

:22:49. > :22:52.Middlesbrough boss Aitor Karanka and one that Bolton defender Zat Knight

:22:53. > :22:54.would probably rather forget. In a nightmare first half, two awful

:22:55. > :23:03.mistakes allowed first Mustapha Carayol and then Curtis Main to put

:23:04. > :23:05.Boro two up inside 20 minutes. But the joy was short`lived, Alex

:23:06. > :23:10.Baptiste curling a lovely shot passed an outstretched Shay Given to

:23:11. > :23:13.reduce the deficit at the break. A fabulous save from the on`loan

:23:14. > :23:15.keeper kept this one out, but Middlesbrough missed the chance to

:23:16. > :23:18.claim a fourth consecutive Championship win when not for the

:23:19. > :23:23.first time this season they succumbed to a late equaliser.

:23:24. > :23:26.Two second`half goals gave League One strugglers Crewe the upper hand

:23:27. > :23:29.against Carlisle, and in dreadful conditions Tom Lawrence scored a

:23:30. > :23:32.consolation goal with this great free kick, but the home side

:23:33. > :23:37.survived a late barrage from the Blues to claim all three points.

:23:38. > :23:40.Conditions not much better at Hartlepool, where there was a shock

:23:41. > :23:43.result for Colin Cooper's side in League Two as Bury put three

:23:44. > :23:47.unanswered goals past them at Victoria Park.

:23:48. > :23:51.But York City provided some New Year cheer. They moved three points clear

:23:52. > :23:55.of the relegation zone with a 1`0 win over Morecambe, thanks to a Ryan

:23:56. > :23:59.Jarvis goal, their first win since October.

:24:00. > :24:01.It's been a miserable winter for England's cricketers, but our region

:24:02. > :24:05.could be celebrating another success story tonight. Durham all`rounder

:24:06. > :24:09.Scott Borthwick is tipped to make his Test debut in the final match of

:24:10. > :24:13.the Ashes series in Sydney. The 23`year`old would be the county's

:24:14. > :24:16.latest product to make it to the England team, following hot on the

:24:17. > :24:19.heels of his Durham team`mate Ben Stokes. England may be heading for a

:24:20. > :24:31.5`0 whitewash, but the youngster believes he can cope with the

:24:32. > :24:35.pressure. I hope so, I have never played Test cricket before, but just

:24:36. > :24:41.being in the squad and being on the DDF really excites me, I am thrilled

:24:42. > :24:44.to be here. We are trying to do our best to get a good win in Sydney and

:24:45. > :24:49.finished on a high. They could be five or and Yorkshire

:24:50. > :24:53.players in the starting line`up tonight, hopefully a chance to get

:24:54. > :25:04.one back. Time to hear more about those storms.

:25:05. > :25:11.I thought I would start with a picture to cheer us up, a Viking

:25:12. > :25:13.braving the weather at Whitley Bay! Definitely not beach weather

:25:14. > :25:17.tonight, strong winds developing across the region, staying very

:25:18. > :25:21.strong tomorrow, a weather warning for strong winds in force from

:25:22. > :25:25.midnight tonight for Cumbria until midnight tomorrow night. Overnight

:25:26. > :25:30.tonight, dry at first but it will not last. Through the early hours,

:25:31. > :25:34.showers splashing in from the West, widespread by dawn, accompanied by

:25:35. > :25:39.strong and gusty south`westerly winds. Those winds up over 25 mph

:25:40. > :25:46.quite easily along the Camry and Coast, with top temperatures

:25:47. > :25:51.overnight of around four or five Celsius. `` the Cumbrian coast.

:25:52. > :25:55.First thing tomorrow, a miserable morning rush hour for those of us

:25:56. > :26:00.who have returned to work, strong winds and spells of rain spreading

:26:01. > :26:05.in from the south and west, falling as snow over the North Pennines and

:26:06. > :26:12.the GBA tills. The winds by tea`time as strong as 25 mph for parts of the

:26:13. > :26:23.north`east. Gusts of up to 40 or 50 mph. Sustained wind speeds could be

:26:24. > :26:28.even higher in some spots. It will be feeling absolutely miserable out

:26:29. > :26:33.there with continued strong winds, almost touching gale force in

:26:34. > :26:36.Cumbria, even at tea`time tomorrow. Those are the sustained wind speeds

:26:37. > :26:42.of five minutes or more, so the gusts lasting just a few seconds

:26:43. > :26:46.could be up to 60 or 70 mph. Very, very unpleasant conditions there!

:26:47. > :26:50.Taking a look at the big picture, the pressure sequence, that locals

:26:51. > :26:55.in the wet weather will sweep away to the north, but it stays

:26:56. > :27:00.changeable over the next few days. Prior art Saturday, but it will not

:27:01. > :27:04.last. `` dryer on Saturday. Yet another system arrives at the

:27:05. > :27:09.weekend, bringing more wintry weather. Over the next few days,

:27:10. > :27:13.let's take a look in detail at the forecast. Dryer and brighter for a

:27:14. > :27:17.time across much of Cumbria on Saturday, but turning wet and windy

:27:18. > :27:22.on Sunday, very similar in the north`east, in fact a little bit

:27:23. > :27:26.less in the way of dry weather here on Saturday, especially around

:27:27. > :27:30.lunchtime. It is tomorrow lunchtime where those tides will be the

:27:31. > :27:33.highest in Cumbria, all eyes on the coasts.

:27:34. > :27:41.And he will bring us an update at 10:25pm. It is the first programme

:27:42. > :27:44.with us all back, so can we say happy New Year? Happy New Year!
