:00:00. > :00:07.Hello and welcome to your Friday night Look North. In the headlines:

:00:08. > :00:11.Operation Sanctuary. Northumbria Police say they want to speak to 30

:00:12. > :00:37.women as they widen their sex abuse inquiry.

:00:38. > :00:54.In football, the latest comings and goings.

:00:55. > :00:58.Good evening. Police investigating alleged sex crimes on Tyneside have

:00:59. > :01:03.revealed they've identified dozens more women they need to speak to.

:01:04. > :01:07.Officers have spent the week raiding and searching homes and 27 people

:01:08. > :01:12.have been arrested. But now they say the names of 30 further women have

:01:13. > :01:16.emerged who could also be victims. Our News Correspondent Peter Harris

:01:17. > :01:32.is with me now. What do we know about these women? These women may

:01:33. > :01:36.or may not be victims. Their names have come up during the

:01:37. > :01:39.investigation. We are now looking at approximately 30 women. The majority

:01:40. > :01:42.are adults, who have come into the investigation. We need to speak to

:01:43. > :01:50.them. We also need to forensically examine some of the material. The

:01:51. > :01:53.fact that there are these 30 further women being interviewed does hint at

:01:54. > :02:06.the scale of the investigation, doesn't it? It does. It appears to

:02:07. > :02:20.be big. We don't know how big it could become. The police will go

:02:21. > :02:25.through the forensics. At the end of the week, 27 people arrested on

:02:26. > :02:36.conspiracy to rape. Some were in care. Now these extra 30 women who

:02:37. > :02:39.the police will talk to. It is a big operation and I can't speculate how

:02:40. > :02:41.big it will get. We have specialist detectives from specialist units

:02:42. > :02:44.working with the suspected offenders. We need to make sure that

:02:45. > :03:03.any potential victims are protected and safeguarded. Finally, what we

:03:04. > :03:15.should remember is the girls in care. The police say they are

:03:16. > :03:18.protected. The only female Conservative MP in

:03:19. > :03:20.our region has been deselected by her own constituency association.

:03:21. > :03:23.Anne McIntosh has been a North Yorkshire MP since 1997 but the

:03:24. > :03:26.Thirsk and Malton Conservative Association has voted not to

:03:27. > :03:29.re`adopt her as their candidate for the next General Election. However,

:03:30. > :03:33.Ms McIntosh has declared she will stand for the seat in 2015, even

:03:34. > :03:34.though she's been rejected by the local Conservatives. Len Tingle

:03:35. > :04:14.reports from Westminster. I do not intend to be thrown aside.

:04:15. > :04:19.It is my intention to stand and represent at the next general

:04:20. > :04:30.election. I will continue to fulfill my duties.

:04:31. > :04:35.Nuclear workers were turned away from Sellafield in West Cumbria this

:04:36. > :04:38.morning after a higher than normal radioactivity reading was picked up

:04:39. > :04:40.by a monitor on the site's perimeter. Only essential staff were

:04:41. > :04:43.allowed on site while Sellafield Limited investigated a potential

:04:44. > :04:46.leak. But at noon it was announced that higher`than`normal levels of

:04:47. > :04:53.naturally occuring radon gas had triggered the alert. It was early

:04:54. > :05:07.this morning than an alarm on the perimeter of the site was activated.

:05:08. > :05:11.That meant it had to be taken very seriously. These sensors are very

:05:12. > :05:15.sensitive. We were told that as a precaution all nonessential staff

:05:16. > :05:17.were told to stay away. Only some of the cleaning, laundry and canteen

:05:18. > :05:20.staff were told to attend. Investigations have now started,

:05:21. > :05:24.asking what's caused the level of radiation to be above normal levels.

:05:25. > :05:30.Earlier today, I spoke to Rory O'Neill from the site to find out

:05:31. > :05:33.more. We've been carrying out investigations all day and we're

:05:34. > :05:39.pleased to say that the alarm was triggered by normally`occuring,

:05:40. > :05:44.background radiation. Nothing to do with any of our operations. Now we

:05:45. > :05:48.need to find out why that monitor was particularly sensitive. We'll

:05:49. > :05:53.carry that out, but there's nothing significant to report. Just after

:05:54. > :05:58.lunch, we got a statement, saying there was no risk to the public or

:05:59. > :06:05.workers. It said it was actually a naturally`occuring gas in the air `

:06:06. > :06:12.something called radon gas. The alarm that went off was sensitive.

:06:13. > :06:18.Earlier, I spoke to a representative from the union that look after

:06:19. > :06:26.workers at the site. It's been a well executed response.

:06:27. > :06:34.Communications went out early, so a lot of people didn't set out to

:06:35. > :06:38.work. It was a good response. The wider community have been thanked

:06:39. > :06:41.today for their maturity. Sellafield have told us they're not going to

:06:42. > :06:51.apologise because they take safety very seriously. The good news is

:06:52. > :07:03.that weekend workers will be in as normal and the same goes for the

:07:04. > :07:06.start of the working week on Monday. Around 1,000 police officers will be

:07:07. > :07:10.on duty for tomorrow's Tyne Wear derby to ensure there is no repeat

:07:11. > :07:13.of the disorder that followed the fixture in Newcastle last year.

:07:14. > :07:16.Then, 150 people were arrested as violence broke out in the city

:07:17. > :07:19.centre. This time, Sunderland wanted their own fans to be barred from the

:07:20. > :07:24.match for their own protection unless they used official transport.

:07:25. > :07:29.But this has been dropped after a campaign by fans. Andrew Hartley has

:07:30. > :07:34.this special report. Disorder that disgraced a city. In its wake came a

:07:35. > :07:37.new idea to stop the violence happening again. The plan was that

:07:38. > :07:41.Sunderland fans would not have been allowed to make their own way to

:07:42. > :07:46.tomorrow's match. Instead, bussed in and out on official coaches. A

:07:47. > :07:51.system some call 'the bubble'. Three weeks ago, that plan was dropped.

:07:52. > :07:54.Had the bubble been in operation last April, all 2,500 Sunderland

:07:55. > :07:57.fans leaving the match would have all turned right at this spot `

:07:58. > :08:00.walking just yards to a heavily guarded convoy of coaches lined up

:08:01. > :08:09.along Barrack Road and whisked away back to Sunderland. But instead

:08:10. > :08:12.hundreds of fans were travelling by rail and so with heavy police

:08:13. > :08:18.protection they turned left towards a baying mob. There were a series of

:08:19. > :08:22.flash points across the city centre ` the police and Sunderland fans

:08:23. > :08:25.came under a hail of bottles and smoke bombs as they marched towards

:08:26. > :08:36.Newcastle Central Station to board trains home. Had we had the bubble

:08:37. > :08:39.none of that disorder would have happened because the Sunderland fans

:08:40. > :08:50.would have been escorted away in one large protected group. It doesn't

:08:51. > :08:53.look good. The bubble isn't a new idea. In South Wales it's been in

:08:54. > :08:56.operation for years for the Cardiff`Swansea derby ` a fixture

:08:57. > :08:59.with a long history of violence between rival fans. At last

:09:00. > :09:04.October's Premier League fixture 3,000 Swansea fans went to Cardiff

:09:05. > :09:10.with no arrests. Impressed, Sunderland announced it would copy

:09:11. > :09:15.that model. There are two main reasons ` firstly the safety of our

:09:16. > :09:19.fans. We want to get them safely to the game. Secondly, dismissing

:09:20. > :09:28.concerns the police have about kicking the game off later than

:09:29. > :09:36.1.30pm. We want to get back to traditional kick off times of 3pm

:09:37. > :09:41.and beyond. Ultimately our priority is public safety. If you look at the

:09:42. > :09:44.coaches from last year, the first Sunderland fans on those were back

:09:45. > :09:45.home before the first special football train had left the station.

:09:46. > :09:54.coaches from last year, the first Sunderland fans on those It's the

:09:55. > :09:58.safest and quickest way. But the plan was pulled after a campaign

:09:59. > :10:02.from supporters' groups. We didn't want fans to be told what to do.

:10:03. > :10:09.Sunderland fans were being punished for things beyond their control.

:10:10. > :10:20.Football fans shouldn't be told how to go to a football match. Football

:10:21. > :10:25.fans are needed. Hopefully they behave themselves on Saturday. It

:10:26. > :10:37.cuts a lot of the nonsense out. Good idea. It stops trouble and hassle.

:10:38. > :10:41.We should be allowed to go to the match the way we want to. They're

:10:42. > :11:04.not treating people as responsible adults.

:11:05. > :11:09.You're watching Look North. Still to come this Friday evening, Jeff has

:11:10. > :11:12.all the weekend sport, including the Tyne`Wear derby preview. Plus ` keep

:11:13. > :11:17.dancing! The Strictly tour waltzed into Newcastle last night.

:11:18. > :11:41.Join me for the weather. He's one of the most powerful men in

:11:42. > :11:44.government but one Northern council says Communities Secretary Eric

:11:45. > :11:47.Pickles is ignoring the impact of cuts in the region. Gateshead

:11:48. > :11:50.Council ` which has made ?75 million of cuts since 2010 ` says it's

:11:51. > :11:53.repeatedly asked for a meeting with Mr Pickles, but without success.

:11:54. > :11:56.It's understood that he has only made one official visit to the

:11:57. > :11:58.region since the coalition was formed. Here's our Political

:11:59. > :12:02.Correspondent Mark Denten. Gateshead's Sunderland Road Library

:12:03. > :12:05.` still open but hit by cuts. There used to be council staff here. Now

:12:06. > :12:09.they're all volunteers. Overall the council has cut ?75 million from its

:12:10. > :12:12.budget over four years but it says it's struggling to get its concerns

:12:13. > :12:15.through to this chap ` Communities and Local Government Secretary Eric

:12:16. > :12:21.Pickles. I wrote in 2010, very shortly after this government came

:12:22. > :12:29.into power, asking him to meet us. I had to write again in January. I'm

:12:30. > :12:33.still waiting. He's Secretary of State for local government... The

:12:34. > :12:42.Sunday Politics programme made a Freedom of Information request. We

:12:43. > :12:48.asked where Eric Pickles has made official visits in England since the

:12:49. > :12:50.coalition was formed in 2010. We were told to provide that

:12:51. > :13:00.information would cost an excessive amount of money. It would involve

:13:01. > :13:04.going through his diary. But Mr Pickles has been a remarkably rare

:13:05. > :13:08.sight in the region over the last three and a half years ` that's

:13:09. > :13:11.unlike some of his colleagues. We understand Business Secretary Vince

:13:12. > :13:17.Cable's been to the North East and Cumbria eight times since 2010.

:13:18. > :13:20.Deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg's made ten official visits. And the

:13:21. > :13:23.Prime Minister David Cameron has been to the region 12 times. Eric

:13:24. > :13:27.Pickles ` well, he's made one official visit to North East and

:13:28. > :13:30.Cumbria and that was back in June 2011. But only this week the Cities

:13:31. > :13:34.Minister, Greg Clarke, agreed to meet North East MPs regularly to

:13:35. > :13:37.discuss the economy. And this Conservative councillor says the row

:13:38. > :13:43.over missing Mr Pickles is nothing more than political mischief making.

:13:44. > :13:49.This is a Labour spin. A nice little trap to remove all blame from them.

:13:50. > :13:57.They have choices to make on their budget. There are modern ways you

:13:58. > :14:02.can communicate ` they're just moaning. This was Mr Pickles on his

:14:03. > :14:05.one official visit to the region in 2011. The DCLG say numerous

:14:06. > :14:15.ministerial visits have been made to the North Of England since then.

:14:16. > :14:21.They say ministers at Westminster have what they call an open door

:14:22. > :14:24.policy. And there's more on that story,

:14:25. > :14:27.including reaction from council workers, on the Sunday Politics at

:14:28. > :14:30.11am on Sunday morning here on BBC One.

:14:31. > :14:33.It's 50 years since the closure of the last ironstone mine in

:14:34. > :14:36.Cleveland. At one time there were 45 mines, digging out the essential

:14:37. > :14:40.iron`making ore, and employing thousands of miners. Half a century

:14:41. > :14:43.on from the last closure, it's been suggested by Middlesbrough MP Tom

:14:44. > :14:45.Blenkinsop that an East Cleveland mining museum be given national

:14:46. > :14:55.status in recognition of the importance of the industry. 50 years

:14:56. > :15:01.ago the last shift clocked on at the last ironstone mine in Cleveland.

:15:02. > :15:09.Today the last tonnes of will be blasted out of the mineface. When

:15:10. > :15:13.that's done, their work is finished. It will be closed. This man was

:15:14. > :15:21.there ` apprentice at 15. North Skelton was one of 45 mines that dug

:15:22. > :15:26.out 300 million tonnes of ironstone. `` 360. We weren't aware that around

:15:27. > :15:38.the world they were discovering ore of much better quality. In the end

:15:39. > :15:44.that put us out of business. Ironstone fuelled Teeside's boom,

:15:45. > :15:50.and the country's prosperity. Today it's remembered in this museum,

:15:51. > :15:53.itself once a mine. But the red rock could be forced to centre stage once

:15:54. > :15:57.more ` it's been suggested that this should become the national ironstone

:15:58. > :16:10.museum. It would be the site where all memorabilia would come to. We

:16:11. > :16:16.want to expand and improve the experience we currently provide.

:16:17. > :16:20.National status is in the gift of the government, but it could be a

:16:21. > :16:24.fitting memorial to an industry that died half a century ago. This is the

:16:25. > :16:55.last cargo. Tomorrow, the rails will be silent.

:16:56. > :17:00.Time for sport. We'll come to the derby in just a

:17:01. > :17:03.moment. But first ` with just over four hours to go before the transfer

:17:04. > :17:15.widow closes until August, what have the main talking points been so far

:17:16. > :17:26.today? Sunderland have signed Liam Bridcutt. He signed from Brighton.

:17:27. > :17:51.Lee Cattermole has been linked with Stoke. Newcastle looked to have

:17:52. > :17:54.missed out on a replacement for Cabaye.

:17:55. > :17:56.Back now to the Tyne`Wear derby, which kicks off tomorrow lunchtime.

:17:57. > :18:00.The toxic atmosphere surrounding this fixture in recent seasons has

:18:01. > :18:03.been criticised by many so it was refreshing to see girls representing

:18:04. > :18:06.Sunderland and Newcastle take part in a friendly football match this

:18:07. > :18:09.week as part of the FA's Women and Girls project. The initiative `

:18:10. > :18:19.supported by both clubs' charitable foundations ` aims to get more

:18:20. > :18:22.female players involved in football. Belmont Community School from Durham

:18:23. > :18:26.beat Ashington's Josephine Butler Campus ` but that may not be an omen

:18:27. > :18:29.for a red and white victory tomorrow. So how should supporters

:18:30. > :18:33.assess the prospects of both teams? Mark Tulip looks ahead. Last time

:18:34. > :18:35.out at St James's both clubs were equally desperate for the three

:18:36. > :18:38.points. This time it's just Sunderland in the relegation mire,

:18:39. > :18:41.although the Magpies are staring at a possible hat`trick of derby

:18:42. > :18:44.defeats. Will any of this week's new signings make a difference? It's

:18:45. > :18:48.interesting to have two strikes possibly making their debut. The

:18:49. > :18:53.lack of goals, for both teams, is a problem. Loic Remy is suspended for

:18:54. > :19:01.Newcastle and Sunderland strikers just can't score. Whichever forward

:19:02. > :19:08.line clicks... That's the defining area. It comes down to the attacking

:19:09. > :19:17.midfielders. The strikers aren't in form. You're looking at Newcastle...

:19:18. > :19:36.Ben Arfa will be influential. Adam Johnson for Sunderland. I suspect

:19:37. > :19:40.those two will have a big say. For so long it was Sunderland going into

:19:41. > :19:45.these games with the scars of previous defeats. They had a fear.

:19:46. > :19:50.Even when they played well they weren't winning. Newcastle have had

:19:51. > :19:53.two defeats in a row and they're in front of their own supporters. There

:19:54. > :20:04.is more pressure on them. How will they cope? A lot of people know what

:20:05. > :20:17.derbies are like. Players shouldn't be fazed. But you have to hold your

:20:18. > :20:21.nerve and keep 11 men on the pitch. There seems to be plenty of mutual

:20:22. > :20:30.respect between the managers. Big game for both clubs. No less

:20:31. > :20:34.important for us. To get to a cup final, be in the FA Cup and out of

:20:35. > :20:38.the relegation zone is a great achievement for Gus. They're in a

:20:39. > :20:46.better place than when we played them. We have to be at our best.

:20:47. > :20:54.Alan said until I was involved I wouldn't realise what it was like

:20:55. > :21:01.and he was right. It means so much to the fans. Crazy. I hope we have a

:21:02. > :21:15.proper game with passion and no incidents. I hope the fans enjoy the

:21:16. > :21:18.day. Middlesbrough are hoping to get on

:21:19. > :21:21.the coat`tails of the play`off positions when they visit in`form

:21:22. > :21:24.Doncaster tomorrow. Aitor Karanka's side will be without defender Rhys

:21:25. > :21:27.Williams who's due to undergo ankle surgery, which means he's out for

:21:28. > :21:32.the rest of the season. Behind the scenes ` as we heard earlier ` Boro

:21:33. > :21:46.are still going flat out to land a striker before tonight's 11pm

:21:47. > :21:56.deadline. It's difficult to win because they have confidence. Back

:21:57. > :21:59.to transfer news and Carlisle United have been busy, with the departure

:22:00. > :22:02.of midfielder Prince Buaben to Partick Thistle paving the way for

:22:03. > :22:05.the loan arrivals of two Manchester United youngsters. They've also

:22:06. > :22:08.confirmed Virgin Trains as their new shirt sponsor. The Blues are at

:22:09. > :22:11.League One strugglers Bristol City tomorrow. Follow every kick on BBC

:22:12. > :22:13.Radio Cumbria. Hartlepool are at home to League Two high`fliers

:22:14. > :22:16.Scunthorpe, who are second, while York City must travel to third

:22:17. > :22:24.placed Fleetwood after back`to`back defeats. Full coverage on all your

:22:25. > :22:27.BBC local radio stations. Well it's also a big weekend of

:22:28. > :22:30.international rugby union. It's the start of the Six Nations

:22:31. > :22:33.Championship ` and both England's men and women take on the French.

:22:34. > :22:36.Skippering the England women's team in Grenoble will be Darlington

:22:37. > :22:39.Mowden Park Sharks' fly`half, Katy McLean ` MBE! Katy, who's a

:22:40. > :22:42.schoolteacher from South Shields, will have Newcastle's Sarah Hunter

:22:43. > :22:51.as her vice`captain. They'll be looking to improve on last season's

:22:52. > :22:55.third place. He might not have had the lean body

:22:56. > :22:58.for spray tan and lycra, but it was Mark Benton's character that won

:22:59. > :23:02.hearts when he sashayed onto our screens for Strictly Come Dancing. A

:23:03. > :23:06.hit with viewers, the Middlesbrough actor made it as far as the tenth

:23:07. > :23:09.show with his partner Iveta Lukosiute. Tonight, Benton is back,

:23:10. > :23:12.dancing in front of a North East home crowd as the Strictly tour

:23:13. > :23:22.comes to Newcastle's Arena. Hannah Bayman caught up with him. Dancing

:23:23. > :23:25.live in front of millions ` not bad for a lad from Guisborough whose

:23:26. > :23:31.early acting experience was at Middlesbrough Youth Theatre. Who'd

:23:32. > :23:37.have thought I'd be dancing? I think I'm the only one who hasn't had a

:23:38. > :23:40.spray tan! I never dreamt I would do this. We became such good friends.

:23:41. > :23:48.We had a laugh. Sometimes I would say we need to focus and get the

:23:49. > :23:52.dance done! It was a fun experience. I enjoyed every minute of it. We had

:23:53. > :23:57.a great time. The hours went by quickly. Will you have anyone

:23:58. > :24:09.supporting you in the audience? I hope so. Friends and family. I'm

:24:10. > :24:31.really excited. I've heard so much. So I have two words ` go 'Boro!

:24:32. > :24:49.Now time for the weather. We're expecting hill snow. Three weather

:24:50. > :25:03.warnings in the forecast. Great image here. So, rain and hill snow

:25:04. > :25:20.across the region. Also a warning for ice. Snow to 200 metres. This

:25:21. > :25:33.evening, rain at first. Snow for the top of the hills. Later, it should

:25:34. > :25:47.clear and ice could be the problem. Temperatures just above freezing.

:25:48. > :25:56.Strong winds as well. Gusts for just a few seconds of up to 70 miles per

:25:57. > :26:11.hour. The weather warning is in place till the early hours of

:26:12. > :26:15.Sunday. Further hill snow and rain. Snow could find its way to towns and

:26:16. > :26:26.cities but we don't expect it to lie. It could be a snowy day! Six
