:00:00. > 3:59:59Thank you. That's all from the BBC News at Six so it's goodbye from me,

:00:00. > :00:08.and Hello and welcome to Monday night's

:00:09. > :00:13.Look North. The headlines: Could do much better.

:00:14. > :00:16.Ofsted criticises high schools in Cumbria and the county council that

:00:17. > :00:20.oversees them. Above all the quality of teaching

:00:21. > :00:23.needs to improve. It is fairly common sense, but that's an obvious

:00:24. > :00:28.thing that needs to improve and the leadership of schools to ensure that

:00:29. > :00:31.that quality of teaching improves. A friend of Jimmy Savile, the late

:00:32. > :00:36.former Mayor of Scarborough, Peter Jaconelli, is accused of being a

:00:37. > :00:41.paedophile. Printing a new pelvis. A North East

:00:42. > :00:46.surgeon uses a 3D printer to repair the ravages of bone cancer.

:00:47. > :00:49.And here's another Marvel. One of the biggest collections of classic

:00:50. > :00:52.comics goes under the hammer. In tonight's Team Talk, back to the

:00:53. > :00:56.drawing board for Newcastle and Sunderland. After Bruce's Tigers

:00:57. > :00:59.show the Black Cats who is boss on Wearside and there's a hazard

:01:00. > :01:13.warning for Newcastle at Stamford Bridge.

:01:14. > :01:17.The school standards watchdog Ofsted has strongly criticised the quality

:01:18. > :01:23.of Cumbria's secondary schools and the leadership provided by the

:01:24. > :01:28.county council. This follows an inspection of 17 schools at the end

:01:29. > :01:30.of last year. Of these, none of the schools inspected had improved since

:01:31. > :01:35.their previous Ofsted and eight had declined including five that were

:01:36. > :01:38.placed in special measures. The Ofsted verdict on Cumbria's high

:01:39. > :01:40.schools follows a similar focused inspection of schools in

:01:41. > :01:46.Northumberland and a similar critical report. In a moment, we'll

:01:47. > :01:52.hear from our Cumbria reporter, Alison Freeman, but first, this is

:01:53. > :01:57.what Ofsted told us earlier. Above all, the quality of teaching

:01:58. > :02:00.needs to improve. I mean, that is, you know, it is fairly common sense,

:02:01. > :02:04.but that's an obvious thing that needs to improve and the leadership

:02:05. > :02:08.of schools to ensure that that quality of teaching improves.

:02:09. > :02:12.Teaching English. Teaching maths. Targeting the teaching at different

:02:13. > :02:17.groups of pupils so the ones who come from deprived backgrounds, you

:02:18. > :02:21.know, get a fair education and are lifted out of that potentially

:02:22. > :02:24.dangerous situation, but looking at high achievers and the more able

:02:25. > :02:31.pupils so the letter does go into detail about how the local authority

:02:32. > :02:38.and how academies can help and get children to the level where they

:02:39. > :02:44.should be. Why did Ofsted make the focussed

:02:45. > :02:48.inspections and what is the Local Education Authority saying? The

:02:49. > :02:54.inspections were carried out because of concerns about poor performance.

:02:55. > :02:59.17 schools were inspected out of 38 in couple bury, but not one

:03:00. > :03:04.improved. More than half got worse. Ofsted said this was partly down to

:03:05. > :03:09.poor support from the county council, a notion that was batted

:03:10. > :03:14.away by the leader. Every time an academy is created, we get funding g

:03:15. > :03:21.taken from us in order to pay for academies and obviously in Cumbria,

:03:22. > :03:25.we have 38 secondary schools and 18 are academies. We get resources

:03:26. > :03:28.removed from us. There seems to be a feeling that somehow we should be

:03:29. > :03:31.accountable for the performance of schools over which we have no

:03:32. > :03:36.control. The county council does have control

:03:37. > :03:42.of 12 out of the 17 schools. Two of which fell into special measures,

:03:43. > :03:45.but Stewart Young said he was positive about progress. When I read

:03:46. > :03:50.the letter from Ofsted, it does paint a very negative picture, but I

:03:51. > :03:54.would urge people to remember the positives. There is a huge amount of

:03:55. > :03:59.good work going on in schools throughout Cumbria and I have got no

:04:00. > :04:02.doubt that will continue. Academies are popular where schools

:04:03. > :04:07.are failing, but in Cumbria, we will just have to wait and see whether

:04:08. > :04:10.that's the road that's taken here. Alison, thank you.

:04:11. > :04:14.He was a pillar of the community. The face of Scarborough. Now, in

:04:15. > :04:18.tonight's Inside Out, the late former mayor, Peter Jaconelli, is

:04:19. > :04:20.accused of being a paedophile. As Chris Jackson reports, his accusers

:04:21. > :04:28.are the online bloggers, Real Whitby. Peter Jaconelli was a

:04:29. > :04:34.prominent businessman, councillor, friend of Jimmy Savile and it is

:04:35. > :04:38.claimed he abused young boys. Trevor was 11 when he says Jaconelli

:04:39. > :04:43.assaulted him in his van. We caught up with him in Australia. When you

:04:44. > :04:47.sit`in the front, Jaconelli's hands are wandering. One hand is on the

:04:48. > :04:54.wheel and the other hand is playing with you. Or trying to. And it

:04:55. > :04:58.didn't matter when you told him to (BLEEP) off or leave it alone. He

:04:59. > :05:02.just left it off. It was a `` he just laughed it off. It was a joke.

:05:03. > :05:05.It was just a joke to him. You knew it was going to happen. So yeah,

:05:06. > :05:11.everybody is aware of it. It is going to happen. So there is a

:05:12. > :05:18.feeling of trep tation and I feel that. I can still feel it. I can see

:05:19. > :05:24.his face. These and other allegations have been published in

:05:25. > :05:27.an online blog. We have got lots of witnesses who have come forward.

:05:28. > :05:31.These are credible witnesses. We have spoken to five alleged victims

:05:32. > :05:37.who all give credible accounts, but say they haven't been interviewed by

:05:38. > :05:42.North Yorkshire Police. The police declined to speak on camera. They

:05:43. > :05:45.said the force and the Independent Police Complaints Commission

:05:46. > :05:49.reviewed its handling of Real Whitby's claims. No further action

:05:50. > :05:54.was required. It will consider any allegations raised in the programme

:05:55. > :05:57.or elsewhere. We also asked Peter Jaconelli's relatives to be

:05:58. > :06:01.interviewed. They declined. In their statement they said there wasn't one

:06:02. > :06:05.occasion where they had heard complaints or been shown factual

:06:06. > :06:10.evidence regarding the allegations. They would condemn improper or

:06:11. > :06:13.criminal acts Peter Jaconelli may have committed, but judgement must

:06:14. > :06:20.be based on clear and sound evidence. The Real Whitby postings

:06:21. > :06:24.don't satisfy the criteria. This is a dead man who can't defend himself.

:06:25. > :06:28.You have made one of the most serious allegations comfortable. Are

:06:29. > :06:32.you comfortable with that? It is true that he can't defend himself.

:06:33. > :06:38.Neither can he be punished. Neither can he go to jail. Peter Jaconelli

:06:39. > :06:41.died in 1999. He is still an honorary alter man of Scarborough.

:06:42. > :06:46.There are calls for that to be withdrawn.

:06:47. > :06:50.You can see the full report on tonight's Inside Out at 7.30pm on

:06:51. > :07:00.BBC One. A North East surgeon has used a 3D

:07:01. > :07:05.printer to rebuild a patient's pelvis. Surgeon Craig Gerrand

:07:06. > :07:09.believes it's the first time in the UK the technology has been used this

:07:10. > :07:12.way, but as he told Sharon Barbour, his patient had such a complicated

:07:13. > :07:19.bone cancer there was no other option. Surgeon Graig Gerrand was

:07:20. > :07:24.faced with a difficult problem when a patient presented here at the

:07:25. > :07:29.Freeman Hospital with a rare bone cancer in his pelvis. The problem

:07:30. > :07:32.with this cancer being rare is th there aren't any other good

:07:33. > :07:36.treatments for it apart from surgery. With this particular

:07:37. > :07:39.distribution of his tumour, the alternative would have been not to

:07:40. > :07:45.offer him a reconstruction. We came up with a new solution for

:07:46. > :07:51.reconstructing his pelvis, using a 3 D printing technique. How do 3D

:07:52. > :07:58.printers work? We have come to look at this worth over ?200,000. They

:07:59. > :08:03.can make complex structures like this. If you want to have a digital

:08:04. > :08:11.representation of what you want to make, you can start to manufacture

:08:12. > :08:15.that one layer at a time and you can create complex parts, complex

:08:16. > :08:22.geometries in this way fairly easily. The patient in his 60s had a

:08:23. > :08:26.titanium pelvis created this way. The tumour has not come back in the

:08:27. > :08:29.pelvis. We have not found it anywhere else on his body. We are

:08:30. > :08:36.hoping he will have been cured by this operation. It is a first in the

:08:37. > :08:41.UK for 3D printing to be used in this way. The doctors say the

:08:42. > :08:47.possibilities of its use in future are fantastic. There are experiments

:08:48. > :08:51.going on at Newcastle University. You could make a whole person!

:08:52. > :08:55.LAUGHTER Maybe!

:08:56. > :09:01.Visitors to a popular area of the Lake District will be forced to take

:09:02. > :09:05.a long detour to get there after a key road was closed off. The B5289

:09:06. > :09:09.which links Keswick to Borrowdale closed this morning and drivers are

:09:10. > :09:13.now being asked to go the long way round via the Honister Pass to

:09:14. > :09:17.travel between the dale and Keswick. Bob Cooper reports.

:09:18. > :09:24.The main road into Borrowdale, cut off for up to six weeks. When the

:09:25. > :09:28.council started planned works on the road, they intended to keep one lane

:09:29. > :09:34.open, but found the foundations were crumbling. The road has collapsed

:09:35. > :09:38.due to water damage underneath it. When we have gone in to have a look

:09:39. > :09:43.and we have taken down the retaining wall, all the retaining wall has

:09:44. > :09:48.collapsed on us. Fortunately, no injuries, but it is exposed the

:09:49. > :09:52.deficiency underneath the road which is causing the concern. It is not

:09:53. > :09:55.safe for traffic. Barry Surtees is in charge of

:09:56. > :09:58.marketing for the Honister Slate Mine, the other side of the valley.

:09:59. > :10:05.He's worried about what the closure might mean. We bring up huge lorries

:10:06. > :10:09.in the morning, very early in the mornings to take away the roofing

:10:10. > :10:13.slates, 40 tonnes at a time. There is no way those lorries are going to

:10:14. > :10:17.get to us. What do we do for six weeks?

:10:18. > :10:23.Here is part of the route people are asked to take into Borrowdale just

:10:24. > :10:27.the other side of this hill. As you can see, it is steep. It is windy

:10:28. > :10:32.and if you were to try and take say a delivery van or a school bus round

:10:33. > :10:39.here, you might have problems. The primary school in Borrowdale has

:10:40. > :10:43.more sensible ideas. I'm exploring the option of getting parents to

:10:44. > :10:48.take the children up to the road closure and walking them past it and

:10:49. > :10:52.drive the school minibus from the road closure to here.

:10:53. > :10:56.Meanwhile this hotel owner is having to make sure all her guests know

:10:57. > :11:00.where they're going. I have actually e`mailed them all, all the people

:11:01. > :11:03.for this week because we don't, we haven't got much information. We

:11:04. > :11:13.were only told on Friday that the road was going to be closed. The

:11:14. > :11:14.timing is less than ideal. The road closure comes just before

:11:15. > :11:38.half term week. The animation festival opened today.

:11:39. > :11:43.It confirms Middlesbrough as the centre of the games industry.

:11:44. > :11:50.In the shadow of Teesside's traditional industries, a rather

:11:51. > :11:53.more modern one has taken root. Max and Ellie computer and gaming

:11:54. > :11:57.students are two of many thousands that the institution helped into the

:11:58. > :12:04.industry. One with real employment prospects. The game industry is

:12:05. > :12:11.growing. By 2015 it is supposed to be worth over ?90 billion. It is the

:12:12. > :12:15.biggest media in the world now. People understand we play games all

:12:16. > :12:23.day, it is not like that. We work hard to achieve a great goal which

:12:24. > :12:29.is to bring joy and enter tainment to people. I came back from

:12:30. > :12:33.Microsoft and I am to go back to London and work in the games

:12:34. > :12:36.industry. Highlighting Teesside's place at the

:12:37. > :12:42.centre of gaming industry was the start here today of the influential

:12:43. > :12:47.Animex conference. It has been taking place at Teesside for 15

:12:48. > :12:59.years. It attracts the biggest names in games and animation to the town.

:13:00. > :13:04.But it is more than just talk that will be generated, real money will

:13:05. > :13:10.be too. It costs ?15,000 to develop a game for a mobile phone, but the

:13:11. > :13:14.developer of the current hit Flappy Bird is raking in ?30,000 a day from

:13:15. > :13:20.advertising revenue, rather more than just a game.

:13:21. > :13:28.It looks like fun. Dawn joins me for the talking points

:13:29. > :13:34.of the weekend's football. Collectors gather for one of the

:13:35. > :13:39.biggest auctions of classic comics. Weather wise, it is very unsettled.

:13:40. > :13:56.Windy at times and we could see sleet and snow to lower levels. Join

:13:57. > :13:59.me later for your full forecast. Four`year`old football mascot George

:14:00. > :14:02.Johnson has been bringing a lot of luck to Sunderland football club of

:14:03. > :14:05.late including the League Cup semifinal at Old Trafford. George

:14:06. > :14:08.has a rare, unidentified, condition. It means he can't eat or swallow

:14:09. > :14:12.safely. This weekend there was a charity match at the Academy of

:14:13. > :14:15.Light to raise funds to send him to America for tests. Julie Smith

:14:16. > :14:18.reports. It has been a busy weekend for four`year`old Sunderland mascot,

:14:19. > :14:22.George, leading Sunderland players on to the pitch for their game

:14:23. > :14:28.against Hull. Yesterday, at the academy of Light, dad's family and

:14:29. > :14:33.friends took on a team from mum's side for a charity match. Just give

:14:34. > :14:42.it everything we've got. The day was about raising money to send gorge to

:14:43. > :14:48.America for `` George to America for treatment. He had 75 operations. The

:14:49. > :14:51.majority of them being in Great Ormond Street Hospital in London.

:14:52. > :14:54.Great Ormond Street Hospital hit a brick wall in terms of diagnosis for

:14:55. > :14:59.him. We are looking further afield and we have been recommended to go

:15:00. > :15:04.to Ohio in America. We have managed to hit the amount for a

:15:05. > :15:08.consultation, but we haven't got anything else for after that. We

:15:09. > :15:12.don't know what they will say to us. We don't want to be sitting there

:15:13. > :15:15.and tell us there is a load of operations or tests, but we haven't

:15:16. > :15:21.got the money to do it. George takes being a mascot in his

:15:22. > :15:29.stride. His next match as VIP guest at the Capital One Cup final at

:15:30. > :15:36.Wembley. He thinks he is one of the players now. He loves every moment

:15:37. > :15:42.of it. Today, watching his dad playing

:15:43. > :15:45.football. To him, his dad is doing the same thing as OJ was doing

:15:46. > :15:50.yesterday. My dad is the best!

:15:51. > :15:57.The final score 3`3. A great show of support for George.

:15:58. > :16:05.Gala dinner at the Stadium of Light last night raised a whopping ?30,000

:16:06. > :16:11.for George. Time now, though, for Team Talk.

:16:12. > :16:16.I'm afraid George's luck ran out on Saturday, but it wasn't his fault

:16:17. > :16:30.Sunderland lost! No, it wasn't. It wasn't a great day for most of our

:16:31. > :16:35.teams. Hartlepool won. Sunderland are back on the brink of the Premier

:16:36. > :16:39.League relegation zone. Most of the teams around them picked up points

:16:40. > :16:46.with the exception of West Brom and Cardiff. The Black Cats were brought

:16:47. > :16:50.down to earth. Steve Bruce enjoying his return to the Stadium of Light.

:16:51. > :17:02.There was a party atmosphere around the place, but that lasted three

:17:03. > :17:12.minutes. It is a two match ban. He is not out

:17:13. > :17:24.of the final. Unfortunately, they couldn't keep

:17:25. > :17:30.the next one. Sadly, they scored. I don't know what the manager was so

:17:31. > :17:36.angry about. They nearly forced an equaliser

:17:37. > :17:48.there and then a deflection. That was enough for Roy Hodgson, England

:17:49. > :17:51.coach. We were in the gue situation and everything was looking bright

:17:52. > :17:55.and you go into the game with the possibility of a win and after five

:17:56. > :17:59.minutes there was the sending off and the whole game changed and we

:18:00. > :18:04.need to reorganise. It was a difficult afternoon. We need to

:18:05. > :18:08.accept it. There is nothing to add. Newcastle might be eighth in the

:18:09. > :18:18.Premier League, but they have one just one game in the last seven.

:18:19. > :18:26.It is not surprising they didn't manage to break Jose Mourinho's

:18:27. > :18:39.unbeaten home record. Newcastle United caught Eden Hazard

:18:40. > :18:44.on a good day. You could argue Newcastle were beaten before they

:18:45. > :18:50.got on the pitch really. There were a couple of weak shots from Ben

:18:51. > :19:04.Arfa. Would it have changed if Newcastle

:19:05. > :19:16.captain put this one away? Probably not. It was a heavy touch. It was

:19:17. > :19:25.Newcastle's best, if not their only chance. It was game over by then and

:19:26. > :19:30.it didn't need the players to rugby tackle Eto'o to the ground. It was

:19:31. > :19:35.the first hat`trick in English history for Hazard. What have

:19:36. > :19:38.Newcastle got to play for now? If z in front of us, the result at

:19:39. > :19:44.Manchester United was a result that cheered me up. It gives us a chance

:19:45. > :19:47.to catch them. If we can try and finish above Manchester United that

:19:48. > :19:54.will be an achievement for this club. And then see where it takes

:19:55. > :20:07.us. In the Championship there is a scoring drought for Middlesbrough.

:20:08. > :20:10.The third successive goalless draw. Middlesbrough on the longest

:20:11. > :20:26.goalless run for five years. League one, another home defeat for

:20:27. > :20:31.Carlisle United at the hands of Gillingham.

:20:32. > :20:37.Gillingham opened the scoring before half`time. And with defending like

:20:38. > :20:47.this, it is not hard to see why the Cumbrians are struggling. An own

:20:48. > :20:50.goal, too little, too late for Carlisle who are in action tomorrow

:20:51. > :20:54.night when Bradford are the visitors. You just keep going. We

:20:55. > :20:59.keep fighting. We keep pulling together and we hope getting

:21:00. > :21:03.performances like that. If we get them, I'm sure we will turn them

:21:04. > :21:09.into victories. I want the lads to be positive and upbeat going into

:21:10. > :21:14.the next game. In League 2 it, York City have been

:21:15. > :21:22.struggling to find the net. That's not football! There it is. York City

:21:23. > :21:30.with a goalless draw there. Hartlepool are 11th. Luke Williams

:21:31. > :21:42.opened the scoring and another Luke, luke James was on hand to score the

:21:43. > :21:45.second one. Newcastle Falcons second row has

:21:46. > :22:00.been forced to retire because of a neck injury. Andy Richards has

:22:01. > :22:04.signed Lee Smith. The 24`6 scoreline. The lack of cutting edge

:22:05. > :22:07.in attack must be a cause for concern while Bath ran in three

:22:08. > :22:14.second half tries and hopefully Smith will help out on that front.

:22:15. > :22:19.Now, in basketball, there was plenty for our teams to celebrate.

:22:20. > :22:30.Newcastle Eagles player coach set a new record for appearances playing

:22:31. > :22:39.his 541st game. His side beat Glasgow Rocks. They are second place

:22:40. > :22:47.in the table. While the Wild Cats bounced back, 103`70 to consolidate

:22:48. > :22:54.the eighth place. Now, at the Winter Olympics, disappointment for Amanda

:22:55. > :22:59.Lightfoot who came 75th in the sprint. She needed to be in the top

:23:00. > :23:06.60 and will have to wait until Friday before she competes again in

:23:07. > :23:10.the 15th kilometre individual event. The skiing felt good out there. I

:23:11. > :23:14.can't wait until the next race. It is a tough course. They have to make

:23:15. > :23:18.it tough at the Olympics, but I finished it so I'm super happy about

:23:19. > :23:24.that. Good luck on Friday for her.

:23:25. > :23:28.We heard about the digital animation festival, but old`fashioned hand

:23:29. > :23:32.drawn comics are exciting collectors in Newcastle. One of the biggest

:23:33. > :23:37.collection of comics to be put on sale goes under the hammer tomorrow.

:23:38. > :23:42.They were owned by just one man in Darlington, but now his widow put

:23:43. > :23:49.them up for auction. Jim Knight had an opportunity to marvel at them!

:23:50. > :23:54.Batman, Superman, Spider man, the super heroes from the last 60 years

:23:55. > :23:58.are laid out, lined up in orderly lots ready to go under the hammer

:23:59. > :24:03.tomorrow. It is a sight to get any serious comic collector drooling!

:24:04. > :24:07.There are some really nice condition comics which I expect to go for a

:24:08. > :24:12.great deal of money and there is a wide range of very readable comics

:24:13. > :24:21.which will be affordable for a lot of people. Of course, likely to be a

:24:22. > :24:29.big hit, this collection of Viz comics featuring the famous

:24:30. > :24:40.characters Sid The Sexist. Back to the serious stuff though and some of

:24:41. > :24:44.these earlier Marvel and DC eds will `` editions will sell for a lot of

:24:45. > :24:49.money. Comic collecting has taken off in a big way. It is a major

:24:50. > :24:52.investment and some of the comics are worth four figure sums. The

:24:53. > :25:09.bidding starts tomorrow noon. We have snow at the Winter Olympics

:25:10. > :25:16.and some snow in our region. An appropriate weather picture is

:25:17. > :25:22.this shot. Over the last few weeks you would have to be above 300

:25:23. > :25:26.meters to see any snow settling. That level will come down. We will

:25:27. > :25:30.have cold winds and a mix of rain, sleet and snow as well. Now, as we

:25:31. > :25:34.head through this evening, it is more mostly dry, just one or two

:25:35. > :25:39.showers. A touch of frost here and there and maybe icy patches as

:25:40. > :25:42.temperatures temp down to minus one Celsius. By the end of the night,

:25:43. > :25:45.the south easterly wind starts to pick up and this cloud starts to

:25:46. > :25:58.edge in from the West. Tomorrow morning, that mix of rain, sleet and

:25:59. > :26:02.snow will spread during the morning. Some of the snow might come down to

:26:03. > :26:07.lower levels. The rain, sleet and snow clears away by lunch time.

:26:08. > :26:10.There is a mix of bright intervals, but sleet and snow showers so just

:26:11. > :26:14.about anywhere could see a covering of snow as we head towards the tail

:26:15. > :26:18.end of tomorrow. Six Celsius your high and gusty winds to go with it.

:26:19. > :26:22.That's the picture for tomorrow. It stays changeable throughout the next

:26:23. > :26:28.few days. Wednesday sees another low pressure coming in offhe Atlantic

:26:29. > :26:32.and a cold westerly and further wintry showers as we head through

:26:33. > :26:36.Thursday. If you are out and about tomorrow morning, there is the rain,

:26:37. > :26:40.sleet and snow which clears to leave a mixture of bright spells and

:26:41. > :26:44.winter showers through the afternoon and that wet and windy weather

:26:45. > :26:47.spreads in from the West across Cumbria during Wednesday and we are

:26:48. > :26:51.back to sunshine and showers on Thursday. Always feeling cold.

:26:52. > :26:58.Always windy and temperatures stuck well in single figures. Above 200

:26:59. > :27:03.meters we will see snow settling and it may turn slushy down to lower

:27:04. > :27:07.levels. Snow and ice something to consider. If you see any, keep your

:27:08. > :27:13.weather pictures coming. Thank you. That sounds horrible! If

:27:14. > :27:20.you want to see more of that, there will be an update at 10.25pm. We're

:27:21. > :27:26.back tomorrow at the same time. Bye`bye.
