:00:00. > :00:10.heavy rain is causing more misery as flood waters are on the rise.
:00:11. > :00:18.Good evening. The people of Cumbria have been on the receiving end of
:00:19. > :00:22.the latest storm to hit the country. It's thought the worst is now over,
:00:23. > :00:25.but with 80 mile an hour winds and blizzards over high ground, it's
:00:26. > :00:34.been a day of disruption for many. From Whitehaven, Alison Freeman sent
:00:35. > :00:39.this report. The wind battered the coastline a
:00:40. > :00:44.game. The gusts were just shy of 70 mph, but hurting people and anything
:00:45. > :00:47.exposed. The low tide meant the waves were not threatening the sure
:00:48. > :00:54.this afternoon, but a flood alert was issued for high tide at 10:30pm.
:00:55. > :01:00.There was a red warning issued in the south of the county. In the
:01:01. > :01:08.north, people were still being warned of gusts between 80 mph and
:01:09. > :01:14.100 mph. Any nonessential journeys, we are urging people to stay
:01:15. > :01:18.indoors. That is the best piece of Adlais we can give. If you are going
:01:19. > :01:27.out, plan your journey and take a little bit more time. The powerful
:01:28. > :01:31.whether this afternoon may not have made everyone stay inside but
:01:32. > :01:35.precautions have been taken. Electricity Northwest has extra
:01:36. > :01:40.engineers on stand`by in case of power failures and they have drafted
:01:41. > :01:43.in volunteers from the British Red Cross to keep an eye on vulnerable
:01:44. > :01:47.customers. Well, that's been the situation on
:01:48. > :01:51.the West Coast of Cumbria. But there were problems further inland as
:01:52. > :01:54.well. We can get the latest from Mark McAlindon in our Carlisle
:01:55. > :01:58.newsroom. Dawn, confusion on the railways
:01:59. > :02:01.tonight. Many Virgin services on the west coast mainline have been
:02:02. > :02:04.cancelled up and down the country, leaving people at different stations
:02:05. > :02:06.not knowing if they will reach their destinations tonight or even
:02:07. > :02:14.tomorrow. These are some passengers we spoke to at Carlisle station this
:02:15. > :02:21.evening. I am stuck here for an indefinite amount of time now. I
:02:22. > :02:27.have been trying to get to my parents in the Lake District but I
:02:28. > :02:32.can't even get that far. I am supposed to be flying tomorrow from
:02:33. > :02:38.Manchester Airport. There are no coaches being offered, there are no
:02:39. > :02:42.taxis. That was the situation at Carlisle Station earlier tonight.
:02:43. > :02:46.And on the roads, an accident between two lorries has partially
:02:47. > :02:50.blocked the M6 at Shap. The A66 is closed completely in both directions
:02:51. > :02:55.at its highest point. And blizzard conditions are possible overnight.
:02:56. > :02:59.And, finally, in the south of Cumbria, 5,000 homes have been
:03:00. > :03:02.without power. A killer who stabbed his wife to
:03:03. > :03:07.death at their home after she told him about an affair has been told he
:03:08. > :03:10.faces life in prison. Heather Arthur had been in a relationship with the
:03:11. > :03:15.saxophonist in the jazz band she sang with on Tyneside. When she told
:03:16. > :03:20.her husband Mark, he stabbed her through the heart. This afternoon, a
:03:21. > :03:23.jury found Arthur guilty of murder. Our news correspondent Peter Harris
:03:24. > :03:29.reports. Guilty of murder. Mark Arthur was
:03:30. > :03:33.the controlling husband. And when he found out his wife Heather was in a
:03:34. > :03:38.relationship with the sax player in a band she sang with, he killed her.
:03:39. > :03:43.We now know Heather had feared Arthur's reaction. In a series of
:03:44. > :03:48.texts to her lover Paul Gowland, her concerns were laid bare. Two days
:03:49. > :03:52.before she died she texted Mr Gowland that she was "shaking with
:03:53. > :03:57.fear" at telling him it was over but that she had "resolved to end it."
:03:58. > :04:02.The next day she said he was "worried about what he might do."
:04:03. > :04:06.And on her final day alive she wrote "will have to go through his fury
:04:07. > :04:15.and disappointment. I will stand firm." Her fears were tragically
:04:16. > :04:19.appropriate. In the study of their home, she told her husband she had
:04:20. > :04:23.been having an affair and she would be leaving him. On his account, he
:04:24. > :04:28.lost control and stabbed her to the heart. He then left the home and
:04:29. > :04:33.headed for their local GP surgery. Arriving here still in his boxer
:04:34. > :04:40.shorts, he burst in on the GB and told him he had heard his wife. He
:04:41. > :04:44.was vague about the details. They called the police who found her body
:04:45. > :04:47.in a pool of blood at the house. In jazz circles, where Heather had
:04:48. > :04:54.revealed her talent as a singer, there was shock. Outside of crying,
:04:55. > :04:58.what can you say? It is a shock for anybody. She spent 30 years of her
:04:59. > :05:07.life and was rewarded with being murdered. There are no words for
:05:08. > :05:12.that. She is very kind and very lively and enthusiastic, very well
:05:13. > :05:17.liked by all members of the group. People say that when someone has
:05:18. > :05:22.died. In Heather's case, it is true. She was lovely. Heather and Mark
:05:23. > :05:26.Arthur had moved here from the south of England. They ran an IT firm said
:05:27. > :05:32.to have been struggling. The house had been inherited. Mark Harper
:05:33. > :05:36.claimed he was guilty of only manslaughter on the grounds that he
:05:37. > :05:40.had lost control but the jury just dock 90 minutes to convicted of
:05:41. > :05:43.murder. He will be sentenced tomorrow but the judge warned him
:05:44. > :05:48.there is only one sentence you can pass and that is life imprisonment.
:05:49. > :05:52.A man has been charged with the murder of his father and grandmother
:05:53. > :05:56.at a house in North Tyneside. Police were called out to a street in
:05:57. > :06:00.Benton last night after reports of a disturbance. Jonathan Swingler
:06:01. > :06:04.reports. A detached Georgian house in
:06:05. > :06:11.Benton, North Tyneside, today the scene of a double killing. Police
:06:12. > :06:15.have released their names as Clara Patterson and Ray Patterson. Police
:06:16. > :06:21.were called out at 9:15pm last night after reports of a disturbance. A
:06:22. > :06:34.man was seen running in the road. The woman was well known to her
:06:35. > :06:38.neighbours. She was smashing. She used to take parcels in for us and
:06:39. > :06:50.vice versa. Just a nice enough neighbour. Just a nice woman to have
:06:51. > :06:54.about. Glen Patterson has been charged with murder and remanded in
:06:55. > :06:59.custody. It is believed the two people who died when his father and
:07:00. > :07:05.grandmother. He will appear in court in the morning and there `` results
:07:06. > :07:08.of a postmortem are expected. A Tyneside offshore engineering yard
:07:09. > :07:12.has won another major order which will create more than a hundred new
:07:13. > :07:15.contract jobs and secure hundreds of existing positions. OGN Group, based
:07:16. > :07:18.at the Hadrian Yard in Wallsend, has been awarded the multi`million pound
:07:19. > :07:21.contract by a leading international oil and gas operator for the
:07:22. > :07:25.construction of a new process module in the North Sea.
:07:26. > :07:28.Football, and Match of the Day follows this programme so if you
:07:29. > :07:32.don't want to know how Newcastle did against Spurs, close your eyes and
:07:33. > :07:36.ears now. Alan Pardew's side lost their fifth home game in a row after
:07:37. > :07:39.two goals from Emmanuel Adebayor, one each from Paulinho and Nacer
:07:40. > :07:43.Chadli gave Spurs their first win on Tyneside in ten years. Sunderland's
:07:44. > :07:46.game at Manchester City was postponed around an hour before
:07:47. > :07:51.kick`off for public safety reasons because of the high winds.
:07:52. > :07:54.As we've heard, those high winds haven't just been affecting the
:07:55. > :07:56.west. Let's find out what we can expect across the region over the
:07:57. > :08:07.next 24 hours. We have had wind gusts of over 80
:08:08. > :08:12.mph reported in parts of Cumbria as well as a number of lightning
:08:13. > :08:15.strikes in the county and the worse is not over. There is a warning for
:08:16. > :08:21.showers overnight tonight and into the early hours of tomorrow morning.
:08:22. > :08:26.Over the hills, anything attitude ten centimetres of snow fall.
:08:27. > :08:32.Tomorrow morning, bright and dry in places with a smattering of showers.
:08:33. > :08:42.Lunchtime and into the afternoon, those snow showers will become more
:08:43. > :08:47.widespread. Across the Northumberland National Park, we are
:08:48. > :08:51.respecting a covering of snow fall. Temperatures as high as six
:08:52. > :08:56.Celsius. The winds will stay strong from the south`west through
:08:57. > :08:58.tomorrow. It is unsettled through Friday and Saturday with
:08:59. > :09:08.low`pressure staying in charge. Meanwhile, strong winds
:09:09. > :09:15.Good evening. What an incredible day of weather it has been. We saw gusts
:09:16. > :09:20.of wind up to 108 mph in the West of Wales. The wind is easing down a
:09:21. > :09:23.notch or two but we still have a high-level amber warning from the
:09:24. > :09:27.Met Office for the strength of the wind over the next few hours over
:09:28. > :09:31.quite a large swathe of the UK. Northern Ireland, northern England
:09:32. > :09:36.and down across Wales, there is still potential for damaging and
:09:37. > :09:39.disruptive gusts of wind. This huge curl of cloud is bringing wet and
:09:40. > :09:43.windy weather across much of the West of Europe. It curls back across
:09:44. > :09:47.the north of the UK and that's the centre of the area of low pressure
:09:48. > :09:51.with the strongest winds just to the south of that. Let's focus on the
:09:52. > :09:55.winds over the next few hours. The ease down by a notch or two but
:09:56. > :10:03.still blustery conditions over most of Wales. High seas around the coast
:10:04. > :10:08.and gusting up to 70 mph. Easily around the 80 mph mark across much
:10:09. > :10:13.of northern England. Across the Pennines this evening and overnight,
:10:14. > :10:16.travelling will be treacherous. Wind and rain at lower levels will
:10:17. > :10:21.produce a lot of spray. You don t have to go to high up the Pennines
:10:22. > :10:26.to see that turned to snow. One way or another, further disruption to
:10:27. > :10:29.travel is more than likely. BBC local radio will keep you up-to date

:10:55. > :10:59.Thursday but I think it be a better day. No persistent rain to be seen.
:11:00. > :11:04.There should be some spells of sunshine for many of us, as well.
:11:05. > :11:08.Does it last until the end of the week? I'm afraid not. It goes
:11:09. > :11:13.downhill on Friday. This low pressure will head our way. Lots of
:11:14. > :11:20.isobars on the chart later in the day. Gusts of 60, 70 or 80 mph, with
:11:21. > :11:22.rain spreading northwards. Significant snow for parts of
