:00:14. > :00:18.A building has partially collapsed and several houses have had to be

:00:19. > :00:20.evacuated tonight after a sink hole opened`up in a North Yorkshire

:00:21. > :00:23.street. The ground suddenly collapsed beneath a house just

:00:24. > :00:28.before six o'clock this evening in Magdalene's Close in Ripon. Luckily,

:00:29. > :00:32.there was no`one in the house at the time, but a dog was successfully

:00:33. > :00:35.rescued from the building. Residents from adjoining houses have been

:00:36. > :00:38.evacuated as a precaution and the area has been cordoned off by the

:00:39. > :00:42.police. A Fire and Rescue unit from Ripon are currently at the scene,

:00:43. > :00:51.and mining experts are now on their way to assess the situation.

:00:52. > :00:58.Our household returned to his house and realised there had been some

:00:59. > :01:01.subsidence in his back garden. He could see large cracks have appeared

:01:02. > :01:09.in the long and down the side of the house. Some of the house started to

:01:10. > :01:15.move away from the main part of the building. We are going to secure the

:01:16. > :01:20.scene now and make sure that the gas mains at isolated. The structural

:01:21. > :01:26.engineers will have a good look during the light of day.

:01:27. > :01:30.It created a wave of anger ` and fears that lives could be put at

:01:31. > :01:33.risk. Last month, Tyne and Wear Fire and Rescue Service announced more

:01:34. > :01:37.than 130 job losses and the closure of three stations ` all in response

:01:38. > :01:40.to a cut of ?9 million in Government grants. But today a reprieve and the

:01:41. > :01:43.Fire Authority's come up with revised plans. A short time ago, our

:01:44. > :01:50.Political Correspondent Mark Denten sent this report from one of those

:01:51. > :01:54.threatened stations in Sunderland. This is Sunderland Central Fire

:01:55. > :02:02.Station. It is one of the fire stations that were due to close last

:02:03. > :02:06.month. Today the same fire authority has issued a statement. It says it

:02:07. > :02:17.has been listening to public concerns and it has made changes.

:02:18. > :02:20.One of the changes will use ?6 million of reserves to cushion the

:02:21. > :02:26.cats. The closures of fire stations like this one will only be made as a

:02:27. > :02:34.last resort. Has that convinced the critics? No. I have been speaking to

:02:35. > :02:38.the Fire Brigades union. It is a fudge. It is confused. There was an

:02:39. > :02:44.option to save the fire stations for a minimum of three years. That

:02:45. > :02:52.option was not taken. The fire service has not been protected. We

:02:53. > :02:54.are left with confusion. The fire authority were not

:02:55. > :03:03.available for interview on this subject tonight, but Labour MPs are

:03:04. > :03:06.also angry, particularly the member for Sunderland Central. She has

:03:07. > :03:10.issued a statement saying she is disappointed with the revised

:03:11. > :03:19.statement from the fire authority and says it. Put lives in Sunderland

:03:20. > :03:22.at risk. `` it will still put lives. Durham Police have been questioning

:03:23. > :03:26.three men arrested in an armed operation last night in Darlington.

:03:27. > :03:29.The three, aged 30, 22 and 19, were detained in the town's Yarm Road,

:03:30. > :03:32.after the van in which they were travelling was brought to an

:03:33. > :03:35.enforced stop by officers. They're from different locations in

:03:36. > :03:38.the North East, and are being held at separate police stations. A

:03:39. > :03:41.police spokesman said today there were no injuries and went on to

:03:42. > :03:43.reassure people in Darlington this was "an isolated incident."

:03:44. > :03:47.Police have launched a fresh appeal for information about the unsolved

:03:48. > :03:50.murder of a man 18 years ago today. Kevin Nightingale, a club doorman

:03:51. > :03:54.from South Shields, was shot on his doorstep after returning from work

:03:55. > :03:59.on the 17th of February, 1996. Bob Cooper reports.

:04:00. > :04:05.He was only 33 and a father of two children. Described as a

:04:06. > :04:17.lovely`natured man, who idolised his family. He was a lovely man. He had

:04:18. > :04:21.a heart of gold. He would help anybody stop. But his life was

:04:22. > :04:24.cruelly cut short, when someone shot Kevin Nightingale after work in

:04:25. > :04:27.front of his family home. That was 18 years ago today.

:04:28. > :04:41.Since then, his widow jury has been living in limbo. The longer it's

:04:42. > :04:47.gone on the harder it is getting. We are waiting to see who did it. Why?

:04:48. > :04:50.Three people were charged in 2000 and then again 2001 for Mr

:04:51. > :04:54.Nightingale's murder, but the charges were dropped both times. Now

:04:55. > :05:04.police are renewing efforts to find out who is responsible. Detectives

:05:05. > :05:10.worked on the murder for several years. It is an opportunity with

:05:11. > :05:16.advances in technology to have a look at everything and see if there

:05:17. > :05:18.is anything new that can be done. Crimestoppers are also offering

:05:19. > :05:22.?5,000 for information that might lead to a conviction. And if anyone

:05:23. > :05:28.out there does know anything, jury Nightingale has this message for

:05:29. > :05:35.them. If anybody knows anything at all, it

:05:36. > :05:42.might be the tiniest piece of information, please come forward,

:05:43. > :05:53.because it might mean a big deal to the police.

:05:54. > :05:58.A public meeting's been held in York this evening on the controversial

:05:59. > :06:01.issue of fracking. Representatives of Dart Energy, which holds the

:06:02. > :06:04.licence for fracking in the area, are meeting campaigners who are

:06:05. > :06:07.against the idea. The process involves drilling deep underground

:06:08. > :06:10.to extract shale gas. The Government says it'll create jobs and bring

:06:11. > :06:11.cheaper energy in the future. Opponents say it damages the

:06:12. > :06:14.environment. Tributes have been paid to the

:06:15. > :06:17.former BBC Newcastle presenter, Frank Wappat, who's died on his 84th

:06:18. > :06:20.birthday. Frank suffered heart failure at the Royal Victoria

:06:21. > :06:23.Infirmary in Newcastle this morning. He retired after a stroke in 2010,

:06:24. > :06:25.ending a 40 year career on the station.

:06:26. > :06:29.Football, and Sunderland fans still don't know who they'll face in the

:06:30. > :06:32.quarter finals of the FA Cup. Brighton and Hull 1`1 tonight ` so

:06:33. > :06:36.they'll have to replay to decide who the Black Cats will play in just

:06:37. > :06:39.under three weeks' time. Well it's murky and damp, but it is

:06:40. > :06:46.getting a fraction warmer. We'll take what we can get, Hannah Bayman.

:06:47. > :06:55.take what we can get, Hannah Barely mild over the next few days.

:06:56. > :07:05.Tomorrow we are expecting showers. First thing tomorrow quite misty. A

:07:06. > :07:16.few showers to the West. In Northumberland one or two showers,

:07:17. > :07:25.but there will be sunshine as well. Mostly dry on Wynnstay. `` wedding

:07:26. > :07:31.stay. Wind and heavy rain return on Thursday.

:07:32. > :07:37.for the most part on Wednesday, it will turn

:07:38. > :07:47.Whilst across the whole of the country the general weather pattern

:07:48. > :07:48.shows no signs of completely settling down there is some good
