:00:14. > :00:18.Welcome to Tuesday's Look North. In tonight's headlines: At risk of

:00:19. > :00:26.collapse. Homes are evacuated after a sinkhole opens up on a housing

:00:27. > :00:29.estate. I moved in a week ago. It is quite a shock. Suspensions and a

:00:30. > :00:33.police inquiry after accusations of financial irregularities at a County

:00:34. > :00:37.Durham special school. And a Valentine's scam ` the couple conned

:00:38. > :00:48.out of money for a luxury lodge that didn't exist. In sport: A Wembley

:00:49. > :00:59.the union and plans to end the exile for one of our league clubs. Also

:01:00. > :01:09.the winter is over but we are does the likes of Amanda go from here?

:01:10. > :01:14.Part will be North Yorkshire town remains cordoned off tonight after a

:01:15. > :01:18.large sinkhole appeared next to houses. It is viewed one particular

:01:19. > :01:24.house could be swallowed up. Able living nearby are worried their

:01:25. > :01:31.homes could be next. Sinkholes are common in this area we are the

:01:32. > :01:38.houses are built on gypsum rock. Imagine if this was your home. This

:01:39. > :01:42.house has stood in Britain for 100 years. Tonight, structural engineers

:01:43. > :01:48.were assessing whether it should be pulled down. A massive sinkhole

:01:49. > :01:52.underneath it is causing one aimed to slip away. The next door

:01:53. > :02:00.neighbour waited to hear what was happening. The wanted me to stay out

:02:01. > :02:06.until they assess what is happening to the land and surrounding

:02:07. > :02:12.properties. I only moved in a week last Saturday so it is quite a

:02:13. > :02:17.shock. Other youngsters could see the drama unfolding from their

:02:18. > :02:21.driveway. I feel sorry for them because it must be off to have half

:02:22. > :02:28.of your house disappearing, it is so close to where we live. It could so

:02:29. > :02:33.easily be one of our houses. I'd macro rep and is no stranger to

:02:34. > :02:39.sinkhole problems. This was the spectacular scene back in 1997 when

:02:40. > :02:48.part of the garden was swallowed up while children played nearby. Gipson

:02:49. > :02:52.dissolves very quickly, a block of around the size of the van dropped

:02:53. > :02:57.in need of will dissolve within 18 months. We lifted the good heavy

:02:58. > :03:00.solid rock it will dissolve and the amount of ground water coming

:03:01. > :03:05.through and coming up as springs in the river will dissolve it causing

:03:06. > :03:13.the wall to get bigger and the singles will develop. 75 new homes

:03:14. > :03:18.plans new the property were thrown out by councillors. Structural

:03:19. > :03:23.engineers have spent the day assessing the damage to the

:03:24. > :03:27.property. While we have been standing here the gap and the track

:03:28. > :03:34.has been getting bigger as the day has gone on. It is possible recall

:03:35. > :03:39.building may have to be demolished. `` the whole building. Police and

:03:40. > :03:41.education officials are investigating serious financial

:03:42. > :03:44.irregularities at a County Durham special school. Inspectors believe

:03:45. > :03:47.more than ?160,000 that should have been spent on children with special

:03:48. > :03:52.needs at Glendene Arts Academy was misappropriated. Instead, the money

:03:53. > :03:58.seems to have funded a private company. Our Political Editor

:03:59. > :04:01.Richard Moss reports. There were celebrations in April 2013, when the

:04:02. > :04:06.Duke of Edinburgh officially opened Glendene Arts Academy in Easington

:04:07. > :04:09.Colliery. But today the school is at the centre of serious allegations.

:04:10. > :04:12.Auditors were called in after whistle`blowers raised concerns

:04:13. > :04:16.about financial irregularities. Their allegations centre on a

:04:17. > :04:19.company that was set up by the chair of governors and Principal. The firm

:04:20. > :04:24.was supposed to generate income for the academy. But instead, ?154,000

:04:25. > :04:28.of school money was used to pay four of its staff. Another ?8,000 of

:04:29. > :04:33.academy money helped fund its running costs. The company even used

:04:34. > :04:38.the school's mini buses, forcing the academy to hire some in for its

:04:39. > :04:42.students. Yet inspectors found no evidence the firm had produced any

:04:43. > :04:45.financial benefit for the school. Instead ?162,000 that should have

:04:46. > :04:56.been spent on pupils subsidised the firm. When these allegations first

:04:57. > :05:01.emerged last July, the chair of governors resigned and the principle

:05:02. > :05:05.of the Academy took sick leave. Since then, some of the staff who

:05:06. > :05:13.worked for the company have since been suspended. The Department for

:05:14. > :05:16.Education plans to recover the money by April. But Durham Police's

:05:17. > :05:19.serious crime unit is still investigating the possible illegal

:05:20. > :05:22.use of school funds. And teaching unions say they're concerned that

:05:23. > :05:25.financial problems can happen too easily in academies like Glendene,

:05:26. > :05:30.which are free of council control. Jill macro in the last few weeks

:05:31. > :05:36.there have been a number of stories like this coming to the fore. It is

:05:37. > :05:41.interesting they have only come to the fore because whistle`blowers

:05:42. > :05:45.have made it known to people. If it were a local authority school they

:05:46. > :05:49.would be subject to close scrutiny and oversight from the local

:05:50. > :05:52.authority would be looking in detail at their budgets and expenditure.

:05:53. > :05:56.The Department for Education insists the finances of academies are

:05:57. > :06:00.rigorously policed. But it does appear pupils at Glendene missed out

:06:01. > :06:04.on money that should have been spent on them. And Richard is with me now.

:06:05. > :06:19.What happens next with this investigation? There have been no

:06:20. > :06:27.arrests as yet. I cannot tell you what the firm is called because

:06:28. > :06:32.there are rules against that. There have been new appointments to the

:06:33. > :06:38.staff to run the school in the absence of the principal at the

:06:39. > :06:41.moment. They want to reassure people that nations made to the school

:06:42. > :06:46.during that time have gone to the school and have been spent on

:06:47. > :06:52.pupils. The auditors are concerned that some donations previously we

:06:53. > :06:57.have gone into this private company but the investigation continues as

:06:58. > :07:00.does the recovery of the money. Three men arrested in Darlington in

:07:01. > :07:04.an operation involved armed police officers have been released on bail.

:07:05. > :07:08.The three, aged 30, 22 and 19 were arrested after officers shot out the

:07:09. > :07:14.tyres of the van in which they were travelling on Yarm Road in the town.

:07:15. > :07:17.No`one was injured. A flight from Amsterdam to Newcastle Airport was

:07:18. > :07:21.grounded on the runway for more than two hours last night, after a group

:07:22. > :07:27.of school children on board decided they didn't want to take off. The

:07:28. > :07:30.Easyjet plane finally landed at Newcastle Airport after 16 of the

:07:31. > :07:34.group, and their luggage, were taken off and returned to the airport.

:07:35. > :07:37.Easyjet says it was due to a nervous young passenger in the group who

:07:38. > :07:40.raised a security issue prior to take off. Journalists on the The

:07:41. > :07:44.Northern Echo and its sister titles were on strike today. The 24`hour

:07:45. > :07:47.long action was in response to eleven staff on the papers being

:07:48. > :07:51.given the choice of moving 270 miles away to Wales, or losing their jobs.

:07:52. > :07:53.Our Business Correspondent Ian Reeve reports. Making the news rather than

:07:54. > :07:56.writing it. Northern Echo journalists are on strike over

:07:57. > :07:58.potential job losses. The paper's owner, Newsquest, wants sub editing,

:07:59. > :08:02.that's writing headlines and captions, and laying out stories, to

:08:03. > :08:05.be done at a central hub in Wales. 270 miles from Darlington. If that

:08:06. > :08:08.newspaper is done in another country, forget Wales, it may as

:08:09. > :08:10.well be India or any other country, it takes away the link that the

:08:11. > :08:14.local community and the journalists have. 11 jobs are at risk at the

:08:15. > :08:17.Echo and sister papers. Five more at the York Press. But the papers'

:08:18. > :08:23.owner says affected staff can transfer to Wales. News Qwest also

:08:24. > :08:29.says the papers will be on sale as normal tomorrow. It also promises

:08:30. > :08:32.that all key educational judgements and decisions will continue to be

:08:33. > :08:35.made in the region. But is it important that local papers are

:08:36. > :08:38.produced in their area. Teesside's Evening Gazette is printed in

:08:39. > :08:41.Sheffield, the Echo itself is printed in Middlesbrough. But the

:08:42. > :08:51.academic view is that it does matter. If you remove the artistic

:08:52. > :08:58.flare of making newspapers look good, really just throwing stock

:08:59. > :09:04.pages onto a templated why would people want to buy something like

:09:05. > :09:08.this? The Northern Echo's editor appears on BBC Tees every day. He

:09:09. > :09:11.challenges listeners to write better headlines than ones printed in the

:09:12. > :09:20.paper. Headlines that could soon have more than a hint of Welsh about

:09:21. > :09:23.them. Half a million patients are set to have their emergency care

:09:24. > :09:26.moved to a new hospital in Northumberland. And today, the

:09:27. > :09:29.country's top doctor came to see it for himself. Sir Bruce Keogh, the

:09:30. > :09:34.NHS's Medical Director, is leading the change in how patients receive

:09:35. > :09:37.emergency medical care in England. But what does this new super

:09:38. > :09:43.hospital in Cramlington mean for patients here? Here's our health

:09:44. > :09:46.reporter, Sharon Barbour. If you live in Northumberland or North

:09:47. > :09:49.Tynside and have a medical emergency, in future you'll be

:09:50. > :09:54.brought here to the new Northumbria Specialist Emergency Care Hospital.

:09:55. > :09:57.Today, England's top doctor, the NHS's Medical Director Sir Bruce

:09:58. > :10:06.Keogh, gave the plan the thumbs up as he arrived for a topping out

:10:07. > :10:23.ceremony. What you see behind me is a major improvement in the

:10:24. > :10:27.facilities we offer. When the patients come in they may come down

:10:28. > :10:32.along this corridor here for resuscitation or along this one

:10:33. > :10:38.here, the front of which will be for emergency paediatric gear. Five

:10:39. > :10:43.years ago we made the judgement that this was the right thing to do. We

:10:44. > :10:47.had to have a cute things all centralised in one area. But what

:10:48. > :10:52.does the hospital mean for patients at their own hospitals such as in

:10:53. > :10:58.Wansbeck, North Tyneside and Hexham. There will still be some local

:10:59. > :11:07.argent key services for things which aren't particularly dangerous or

:11:08. > :11:12.life`threatening. `` urgent. The travelling time is far outweighed by

:11:13. > :11:16.the benefit of getting you to the right place where you can get the

:11:17. > :11:24.right treatment from the right people. There are concerns about the

:11:25. > :11:30.pressures the hospital will put on the Ambulance Service, it could mean

:11:31. > :11:35.an extra 2000 extra hours per week for staff. The North East Ambulance

:11:36. > :11:52.Service said they were in constant talks with the hospital trust. There

:11:53. > :11:58.have also been concerns raised by medical staff at Newcastle hospitals

:11:59. > :12:03.who already have been major trauma centre at the Royal Victoria

:12:04. > :12:07.infirmary, less than ten miles away. We already have a good trauma

:12:08. > :12:12.service but that does not equal with additional emergency keyer services

:12:13. > :12:20.to a high quality elsewhere in the region. As work continues on the

:12:21. > :12:23.site, work must also be under way to convince the north`east what the

:12:24. > :12:28.staff year and the chief doctor believed, that a new hospital will

:12:29. > :12:38.improve the outcome for patients needing emergency keyer. Plenty more

:12:39. > :12:44.to come: The Darlington campaign to bring the cup home gathers place and

:12:45. > :12:48.entertaining the young and the young at heart in Carlisle. Also what does

:12:49. > :13:04.the weather have in store? A young couple from North Yorkshire

:13:05. > :13:07.have lost hundreds of pounds after becoming victims of the fraud

:13:08. > :13:14.involving a fictitious holiday home in the Highlands. Laura booked a

:13:15. > :13:25.Valentine home through Facebook but when she went to the location at

:13:26. > :13:31.Loch Ness it did not exist. Luxury lodges on the banks of Loch Ness.

:13:32. > :13:36.The website promises romantic getaways in the Highlands. For this

:13:37. > :13:40.young couple who are often apart due to his Army career it seemed like

:13:41. > :13:44.the perfect way to spend their first Valentine's Day together, that

:13:45. > :13:51.they'd is just one problem, it does not exist. Dell macro the direction

:13:52. > :13:59.is said to follow the road left and it just turned into a dark track and

:14:00. > :14:04.someone's house which it was not. We went to a local hotel to ask if they

:14:05. > :14:09.had heard of it because it was supposed to be there since 2011.

:14:10. > :14:14.They had never heard of it so it was not looking great. The website was

:14:15. > :14:24.bogus, the pictures were of another hotel. They had spent hundreds of

:14:25. > :14:31.pounds by direct cash transfer which means it is unlikely they will get

:14:32. > :14:39.the cash back. We always recommend using a credit card because it will

:14:40. > :14:44.give you additional protection. We you can protect yourself from these

:14:45. > :14:49.fraudsters also look at Google, Google maps and that kind of stuff.

:14:50. > :14:57.Also look online for any history before you book. Unfortunately this

:14:58. > :15:04.case is not unique. Please Scotland say they have had other complaints

:15:05. > :15:09.about this specific website. Laura boot through the man called Kevin

:15:10. > :15:14.Beaumont, I am going to see what he has got to say about this. It has

:15:15. > :15:22.gone straight to answer phone. Hello, I am calling from the BBC,

:15:23. > :15:25.please give me a call back as I am looking at the website you have

:15:26. > :15:34.about holiday lodges on Loch Ness which do not exist. Let's see what

:15:35. > :15:42.happens. I did not hear back from him and he is not returning any

:15:43. > :15:46.calls from Laura either. There are some lodges there and they are

:15:47. > :15:51.beautiful but just be careful who you are booking with. For this

:15:52. > :15:55.couple it should have been a doorman Tick Highland Fling, instead their

:15:56. > :16:01.Valentine 's weekend will be remembered for all the wrong

:16:02. > :16:11.reasons. `` the romantic Highland Fling. The BBC are examining how the

:16:12. > :16:17.World War I affected life on the home front. The programme launches

:16:18. > :16:26.next Monday, K the taster of what we have in store. `` here is a taster.

:16:27. > :16:32.This was the response in Newcastle city centre, seated like thousands

:16:33. > :16:38.of other memorials will stop the War has such a hold on our imagination

:16:39. > :16:46.that we have an increasing need to talk about it and not just because

:16:47. > :16:51.this is 2014. When you look at what is depicted here, the patriotism,

:16:52. > :16:58.the optimism, the clear sense of the just cause. It seems to describe a

:16:59. > :17:07.very different world, albeit in living memory. For Britain it was

:17:08. > :17:11.the first total war, practically everyone was affected in some way

:17:12. > :17:16.and the scale of loss and suffering was unlike anything we had known.

:17:17. > :17:21.Many of the stories from those days have been lost down the decades.

:17:22. > :17:27.Some of them we are hoping to the Discover. We are concentrating on

:17:28. > :17:34.stories from the home front. Deals of how our region was crucial to

:17:35. > :17:42.arming the vast war effort. Tales of the unprecedented sacrifices. He

:17:43. > :17:53.did, he was the last one, they brought him warm because he was the

:17:54. > :17:57.only one living. Our first series of reports begins next week. Every

:17:58. > :18:07.family has a story about the great War. We want to bring you some that

:18:08. > :18:09.we all share. That series starts next Monday year or look north and

:18:10. > :18:29.on your ABC local radio station. Tories using technology from the

:18:30. > :18:35.past have been used to entertain children at a new exhibition in

:18:36. > :18:39.Carlisle. It is a display that features moving sculptures old and

:18:40. > :18:56.new and is keeping the half term crowds amused. Our reporter went to

:18:57. > :19:01.join them. They may not be high`tech by today's standards but these

:19:02. > :19:06.wooden toys have still been mesmerising visitors here. The

:19:07. > :19:14.mechanical searches `` mechanical circus exhibition shows toys made

:19:15. > :19:21.from cogs and wheels. Simple but effective. My favourite was called

:19:22. > :19:28.locks, it was traditional to the story but keeps carries on holding

:19:29. > :19:32.while you hold the button. I like this because I do the lot of

:19:33. > :19:39.swimming gala is and I just like the way it moves. It is quite funny. I

:19:40. > :19:52.like the way he is talking. It is quite funny. Bite macro you like the

:19:53. > :20:08.way his mouth moves? Yes. It is interesting to try to understand how

:20:09. > :20:15.they work. You just dress a button and it kicks in. You watch the

:20:16. > :20:21.little cogs and wheels working and it is amazing how it happens.

:20:22. > :20:27.Science and technology can be fun. Nowadays people do not know how to

:20:28. > :20:32.fix their own washing machines. We just throw things out and buy a new

:20:33. > :20:37.one. Perhaps if we had some of these skills we could work out how to fix

:20:38. > :20:50.the car off the bike when it is broken. I'd macro the exhibition

:20:51. > :20:56.runs until June in Carlisle. Were those your childhood toys? Stop it!

:20:57. > :21:11.All the cliches come true when you have a great one to start with.

:21:12. > :21:14.Sunderland have extra time `` Sunderland fans must wait until a

:21:15. > :21:18.week tonight to finalise their travel plans for the FA Cup

:21:19. > :21:21.quarterfinal. But whatever happens one manager will definitely be

:21:22. > :21:24.taking on his former club. Brighton went in front through Leonardo

:21:25. > :21:28.Ulloa's cool finish ` raising the prospect of a return to the Amex

:21:29. > :21:31.Stadium for Black Cats head coach Gus Poyet. But Yannick Sagbo's late

:21:32. > :21:34.equaliser for Hull City will now make THEM favourites to give

:21:35. > :21:37.ex`Sunderland boss Steve Bruce the chance of a third victory this

:21:38. > :21:40.season over the Wearsiders. Another newspaper has been banned by

:21:41. > :21:44.Newcastle United. A Sunday Express article said manager Alan Pardew

:21:45. > :21:47.will be sacked if the club fails to beat Aston Villa, a claim branded

:21:48. > :21:50."completely untrue" by the club. This evening in League One BBC Radio

:21:51. > :21:53.Cumbria will have full match commentary of Carlisle's trip to

:21:54. > :21:55.Coventry. BBC Tees will be following Hartlepool's League Two game at

:21:56. > :21:59.Southend. Meanwhile Middlesbrough have now signed on loan Peterborough

:22:00. > :22:08.forward Lee Tomlin on a permanent deal. Wembley fever's already

:22:09. > :22:18.gripping Sunderland and today four stalwarts of the club's last major

:22:19. > :22:21.final were reunited. Martin Gray, Brian Atkinson and Tony Norman now

:22:22. > :22:25.work for Darlington and they were joined by their former boss as part

:22:26. > :22:28.of efforts to help the re`vamped non`league club. The Quakers hope to

:22:29. > :22:31.return to play in the town next season after two years in exile.

:22:32. > :22:36.They were reunited with their Wembley partner as part of

:22:37. > :22:43.fundraising effort to help the Quakers. Darlington are raising cash

:22:44. > :22:47.to redevelop the town's rugby club and set up home here two years after

:22:48. > :22:56.leaving the time when the old club went bust. They need their own club

:22:57. > :23:00.in their hometown so coming back to Darlington next reason is essential.

:23:01. > :23:07.The currently sheared a ground with Bishop Auckland. So far ?65,000 has

:23:08. > :23:13.been raised to bring the club that to the town. Much of the money that

:23:14. > :23:19.has been raised the redevelop the dog the club he has come from fans.

:23:20. > :23:25.The plan is there will be a 450 seater stand there, standing areas

:23:26. > :23:32.behind either goal, and the capacity of around 3000 in the first

:23:33. > :23:38.instance. And this was a welcome publicity boost for the players.

:23:39. > :23:45.They need identity and coming back into the town gives them that. The

:23:46. > :23:49.reformed Darlington remain confident they will be setting up warm here in

:23:50. > :24:13.time for the start of the next season. `` Paul. `` home. Lee

:24:14. > :24:16.Jackson now thinks his place in the men's competition was acceptable in

:24:17. > :24:26.the wider scale of things, but what now? I might take a break for one

:24:27. > :24:30.month, put down my rifle and my skis, take a holiday, spend time

:24:31. > :24:39.with my family and reflect on the last few years to see if I have the

:24:40. > :24:43.motivation and skills to continue. I have got something to prove in

:24:44. > :24:52.myself, I want to take it forward and improved in the next four years
