:00:00. > :00:10.hear views on immigration. That's all from us.

:00:11. > :00:16.Hello, good evening. Kevan Thakra murdered three men, apparently in

:00:17. > :00:21.revenge for a less`than`perfect drug deal. Three officers at a prison in

:00:22. > :00:26.Durham were then stabbed by him in an incident four years ago. Have a

:00:27. > :00:29.more Now, he has been awarded over ?800 in compensation for personal

:00:30. > :00:33.effects lost when he was transferred between jails. But the prison

:00:34. > :00:39.officers are still awaiting compensation for their injuries.

:00:40. > :00:43.A gangland murder of such brutality that police said it was "off the

:00:44. > :00:49.scale" Kevan Thakrar and his brother entered a house with a submachine

:00:50. > :00:53.gun They shot dead three men. Out of bullets, they then stabbed two

:00:54. > :00:57.women. Thakrar was only three years into a life sentence when he lashed

:00:58. > :01:04.out violently again, stabbing three guards with broken bottle at

:01:05. > :01:12.Frankland Jail in Durham in 2010. Craig Wylde sustained devastating

:01:13. > :01:21.injuries. To everything which controls the hand and arm. The pain

:01:22. > :01:34.is probably the biggest thing. It is constant. It never lets up. Things

:01:35. > :01:37.are difficult at the moment. There's a lot of suffering from myself and

:01:38. > :01:40.my family. Thakrar was cleared of two counts of

:01:41. > :01:42.attempted murder and three of wounding with intent, claiming he

:01:43. > :01:45.was suffering from post`traumatic stress disorder because of ill

:01:46. > :01:47.treatment and racist abuse. Following the attack, he was

:01:48. > :01:51.transferred from Frankland to a different prison and it was during

:01:52. > :01:59.this move that some of his possessions went missing. He was

:02:00. > :02:10.awarded ?225 for damage to positions. He was also awarded ?90

:02:11. > :02:16.for a number of lost items, and the judge also awarded him a further

:02:17. > :02:25.?500 to compensate for lost personal items, including photographs. A

:02:26. > :02:32.grand total of ?815. How much compensation have you received for

:02:33. > :02:35.your injuries? Absolutely nothing. To hear that he is getting in

:02:36. > :02:44.damages is quite shocking. They are hospitals in one of the

:02:45. > :02:46.country's failing health trusts. Now, the Cumberland Infirmary in

:02:47. > :02:49.Carlisle, the West Cumberland Hospital in Whitehaven and the

:02:50. > :02:54.maternity unit at Penrith Hospital are facing three days of inspections

:02:55. > :02:57.by the Care Quality Commission. The North Cumbria University Hospitals

:02:58. > :03:07.Trust has been placed in "special measures". Stephanie Cleasby is with

:03:08. > :03:13.us. Remind us why that was. The trust was placed in special measures

:03:14. > :03:21.following higher than normal death rates. There investigation this week

:03:22. > :03:24.we'll look at eight different areas of the hospital. The woman leading

:03:25. > :03:30.the inspection team is a former nurse. She said, if it is not good

:03:31. > :03:35.enough for my family, it should not be good enough for yours. She told

:03:36. > :03:40.us what she will be looking for. We are looking to see that the

:03:41. > :03:45.treatment is effective, that it is caving in responsive to their needs.

:03:46. > :03:58.It also has to be well managed and well laid. It will cover the whole

:03:59. > :04:01.range of services provided. The trust was to wind up with

:04:02. > :04:06.Northumberland to get it out of special measures. They see

:04:07. > :04:17.improvements have been made. The senior nursing grudges are under way

:04:18. > :04:19.and they have also launched a recruitment drive for more losses,

:04:20. > :04:25.but there has been worries about staffing levels. We are worried that

:04:26. > :04:33.they did not have enough nursing staff. To be honest, we did expect

:04:34. > :04:40.improvements much sooner. Secondly, the question of quality of care, we

:04:41. > :04:47.know that some of the key has been transferred to Northumbria hospital.

:04:48. > :04:50.The inspectors want to hear from public and patients about their

:04:51. > :04:54.experience. To public sessions are being held.

:04:55. > :04:56.The Conservatives have launched their campaign for next month's

:04:57. > :04:59.European elections in the North East. Northern Ireland Secretary

:05:00. > :05:01.Theresa Villiers visited Stockton engineering firm Francis Brown. The

:05:02. > :05:05.Conservatives currently have one MEP in the region and say they will give

:05:06. > :05:14.people a greater say on what happens in the European Union. When it comes

:05:15. > :05:21.to Europe, it is the conservatives who have the right message. Most

:05:22. > :05:25.people recognise that it has been heading in the wrong direction. They

:05:26. > :05:29.want it focused on trade and opportunities, such as the

:05:30. > :05:34.opportunities for businesses like I am visiting today, and that is why

:05:35. > :05:37.we need a prime minister who will deliver the message. We will then

:05:38. > :05:39.give people the choice in a referendum.

:05:40. > :05:42.In addition to the Conservatives, seven other parties are contesting

:05:43. > :05:45.the European elections in the North East. Here is the list. And, of

:05:46. > :05:48.course, we will bring you news from those parties ahead of the elections

:05:49. > :05:51.on May 22. Football now and Newcastle were in

:05:52. > :05:53.Premier League action in London tonight as they faced Arsenal at the

:05:54. > :05:59.Emirates. It was a cagey first half until

:06:00. > :06:02.Koscielny made the breakthrough from the set piece. Newcastle created

:06:03. > :06:05.chances. Tiote struck this one well, for example, but in truth, it was

:06:06. > :06:08.Tim Krul keeping the score down, although not even he could have

:06:09. > :06:11.stopped this. Third time lucky from Ozil for 2`0. The home team

:06:12. > :06:14.dominated the second half, but Gouffran might have done better with

:06:15. > :06:17.this. Arsenal always looked comfortable, though, and this a

:06:18. > :06:20.simple finish for Olivier Giroud. Newcastle's sixth defeat on the

:06:21. > :06:23.trot. With Alan Pardew, back on the touchline ` and back under pressure.

:06:24. > :06:28.Final score, Arsenal three, Newcastle zero.

:06:29. > :06:32.Reaction to that game and a lot more from the weekend, of course, in Late

:06:33. > :06:36.Kick Off in the next hour, with Steve Bower, here on BBC One.

:06:37. > :06:39.If you had some sun today, it was very pleasant, but I hear May will

:06:40. > :06:47.not be starting with a heatwave, Paul?

:06:48. > :06:56.No, all night tonight, a blanket of cloud, giving a rather murky picture

:06:57. > :07:03.overnight. Tomorrow, eagerly start for many. The mist should clear,

:07:04. > :07:08.especially inland and that is where the best of the sunshine will be.

:07:09. > :07:21.Both coastlines hanging onto some cloud. High temperatures of 17

:07:22. > :07:26.Celsius. As we head into Wednesday and Thursday, a lot of cloud and

:07:27. > :07:32.rain for many of us. Things also torn a lot cooler as well.

:07:33. > :07:38.Thursday and then it will turn much cooler as we go into the bank

:07:39. > :07:45.holiday weekend. Hello, I am going to throw some

:07:46. > :07:48.numbers at you first of all. 22 Celsius was the temperature recorded

:07:49. > :07:53.at Aviemore making it the warmest day of the year so far. At the other

:07:54. > :07:58.end of the country, this cloud has produced a lot of heavy and thundery

:07:59. > :08:04.downpours. A lot of rain falling in one hour at Hurn airport. There are

:08:05. > :08:17.some showers around the Bristol Channel. There will be so increasing

:08:18. > :08:21.amounts of mist, fog and low cloud. Tomorrow starts grade, Misty and

:08:22. > :08:35.murky in most places. We will see the Sun breaking through in Cumbria

:08:36. > :08:36.and the North. You might get the odd shower in western Northern Ireland
