:00:00. > :00:00.daughter's friends They had planned to spend their

:00:00. > :00:58.Sunday kayaking down the River Tyne. And today, the bodies

:00:59. > :01:05.of three members of the same family It's thought the three men,

:01:06. > :01:09.who haven't yet been named, went into the river at Hexham,

:01:10. > :01:12.planning to end their trip about But search

:01:13. > :01:16.and rescue teams found their bodies in a short stretch of the water

:01:17. > :01:19.between Corbridge and Riding Mill. Our correspondent, Adrian Pitches,

:01:20. > :01:36.has been following events and joins Yes, it was down these steps that

:01:37. > :01:45.the men carried their kayaks yesterday.

:01:46. > :01:48.The alarm was raised at 11 o'clock by relatives then the men did not

:01:49. > :01:55.return to their homes in South Shields area. The police, the fire

:01:56. > :02:01.and rescue services were all scrambled as was seeking

:02:02. > :02:20.helicopter. It was a helicopter that found the first bodies. The men were

:02:21. > :02:27.on kayaks, they were experienced kayakers. This is what the police

:02:28. > :02:31.had to say. The three of them went as a group

:02:32. > :02:38.from South Tyneside to Hexham in order to go down the river as they

:02:39. > :02:42.have done before. It wasn't until they were excessively late home that

:02:43. > :02:51.concern was expressed and a search was started. The river was high and

:02:52. > :02:54.fast flowing. Quite challenging conditions. That is one aspect we

:02:55. > :03:00.will be looking at. Adrian, we know the river was very

:03:01. > :03:12.high, what do we know The river was high. It was running

:03:13. > :03:30.about five feet higher than its normal level. These were set on

:03:31. > :03:34.kayaks rather than sit in kayaks. We actually talked to a kayak axed Bert

:03:35. > :03:41./expert. Something like these, sit on top

:03:42. > :03:45.like these, it would be something like slow`moving rivers, lakes and

:03:46. > :03:48.lochs and possibly a little bit of You can go out and the river

:03:49. > :03:56.is very, very slow moving. Within five, ten minutes,

:03:57. > :04:07.rivers can be straight back up The kayaks that the men used

:04:08. > :04:12.underwater conditions will be key in any investigation. We will have an

:04:13. > :04:13.up to date update for you at half ten tonight.

:04:14. > :04:19.Thank you. A major search operation is also

:04:20. > :04:21.underway along the banks of the River Wear in Durham

:04:22. > :04:25.as concern grows for a 19`year`old student missing since the early

:04:26. > :04:27.hours of yesterday morning. Luke Pearce had been out drinking

:04:28. > :04:30.with friends on Saturday evening in a student nightclub close to

:04:31. > :04:32.the riverside. The River Wear, close to Durham

:04:41. > :04:43.engineering student Luke Pearce has We would consider him as being

:04:44. > :04:49.high risk at this moment in time. We are doing checks

:04:50. > :05:08.of Luke's phones and bank account to In terms of the state he was in,

:05:09. > :05:11.it's impossible to say He had been drinking with friends,

:05:12. > :05:18.but nothing to indicate that he wasn't capable of looking

:05:19. > :05:21.after himself. We are doing checks on his phone

:05:22. > :05:24.and bank account to see if he is using those which would

:05:25. > :05:28.indicate he is fit and well. In addition to that,

:05:29. > :05:33.we are also doing house`to`house enquiries to see if anybody has seen

:05:34. > :05:36.him in the area. On the night he went missing, Luke

:05:37. > :05:39.had been drinking in Jimmy Allen's, But he was last seen several hundred

:05:40. > :05:43.yards away on the riverside footpath, close to

:05:44. > :05:47.the racecourse cricket ground. Seeing the search teams back

:05:48. > :05:50.at work on this section of the river will remind many of the death of

:05:51. > :05:53.20`year`old economics student Sope Peters who drowned after a night out

:05:54. > :05:57.with friends in October last year. Police are keen not to draw any

:05:58. > :06:00.similarities at this stage. They're still hopeful Luke Pearce

:06:01. > :06:03.will be found safe and well. Durham University is working with

:06:04. > :06:06.police to spread word among the student community to ensure everyone

:06:07. > :06:09.is on the lookout for Luke. An inquest has heard that two

:06:10. > :06:11.British soldiers serving in Afghanistan,

:06:12. > :06:13.including one from County Durham, died in a fire that engulfed their

:06:14. > :06:17.tent as they slept at Camp Bastion. Private Rob Wood and 23 year`old

:06:18. > :06:20.Dean Hutchinson from Spennymoor died as flames swept through a logistical

:06:21. > :06:23.centre at the Helmland province The men served with the

:06:24. > :06:26.Royal Logistic Corps. Sir Richard Branson has revealed

:06:27. > :06:34.a new plan that could save It comes after labour leader

:06:35. > :06:38.Ed Milliband told Sir Richard he must think again about axing

:06:39. > :06:41.the funds behind the charity. The Foundation was created

:06:42. > :06:45.in 1997 after what was then the Northern Rock Building Society

:06:46. > :06:47.was demutualised. It used some of the Rock's profits

:06:48. > :06:51.to aid good causes in the North East But Virgin Money, which bought

:06:52. > :06:55.Northern Rock in 2011, said it Our Business Correspondent,

:06:56. > :07:00.Ian Reeve, reports. Sir Richard Branson came to his

:07:01. > :07:03.Virgin Money empire this morning His bank had said it would no longer

:07:04. > :07:08.support the Northern Rock Foundation ` the charity that gives to good

:07:09. > :07:11.causes in the region. Too expensive, it said,

:07:12. > :07:13.at ?4 million a year. But the tycoon now has

:07:14. > :07:22.a new proposal. What they have said is that they

:07:23. > :07:26.will pay, they are happy to put ?1 million a year in,

:07:27. > :07:29.but they want other companies from So there's 11 other companies that

:07:30. > :07:38.are bigger than Virgin Money, if everybody can contribute something,

:07:39. > :07:41.I think we can get to more than So will business in the region

:07:42. > :07:46.take up Sir Richard's challenge? A problem could be that most

:07:47. > :07:49.already donate to charity. One of them is the

:07:50. > :07:56.Afghanistan Trust. Since 2007, it has helped members

:07:57. > :07:59.of the Parachute Regiment who are And software company Sage already

:08:00. > :08:06.gives its name to the Gateshead music venue, as well

:08:07. > :08:11.as putting cash into community Rather more straightforward for

:08:12. > :08:20.Sir Richard this morning was meeting businesses that Virgin Money

:08:21. > :08:21.has mentored. Andy's company makes activity

:08:22. > :08:25.packs for young children. He was very impressed with

:08:26. > :08:28.the fact we have broken even already and we had got from 1000 to 10,000

:08:29. > :08:31.boxes in six months. It was very encouraging

:08:32. > :08:34.from a man of such stature. As well as helping people like Andy,

:08:35. > :08:37.Sir Richard's bank says it has supported 150 charities

:08:38. > :08:40.in the north east. A claim to disarm critics if

:08:41. > :08:44.its proposals for the Northern Rock The chairman of the foundation

:08:45. > :08:51.called the proposal interesting. He said it would be discussed

:08:52. > :08:54.at a board meeting tomorrow and promised that the foundation

:08:55. > :09:06.would respond constructively. He was an influential mayor and an

:09:07. > :09:09.honorary alderman of Scarborough. Today though, Peter Jaconelli,

:09:10. > :09:12.the town's ice cream entrepeneur, was stripped of his titles,

:09:13. > :09:15.15 years after his death. The decision was made by the town's

:09:16. > :09:20.council members after recent allegations linking Mr Jaconelli to

:09:21. > :09:38.historic cases of child sex abuse. The names of Scarborough's great and

:09:39. > :09:43.good. The council's list of aldermen. But 15 years after his

:09:44. > :09:49.death, the name of this man, Peter Jaconelli, will now be removed.

:09:50. > :09:52.Today, council members voted to strip the former mayor of his

:09:53. > :10:00.honorary title following recent claims linking him to historic

:10:01. > :10:06.allegations of sex abuse. Had we known, we would have dealt with him

:10:07. > :10:11.differently. We don't describe him as the former mayor of the borough.

:10:12. > :10:18.I think that is very important that all recognition is gone. Allegations

:10:19. > :10:25.against Peter Dzeko Nelly, a friend of Jimmy Savile, were made earlier

:10:26. > :10:31.this year. `` Peter Jaconelli. One of the men who made the allegations

:10:32. > :10:41.was here to witness the council's decision. It is the very least that

:10:42. > :10:47.can be done. I am looking over the people that covered it up. The

:10:48. > :10:54.decision has been supported by people in Scarborough. I know he is

:10:55. > :11:00.dead, but he should not have that respect given to him. I think you

:11:01. > :11:05.need to be a good example to have a title like that. Today's decision

:11:06. > :11:11.will put further distance between Scarborough Council and their once

:11:12. > :11:14.influential mayor. 15 years after his death, the name of Peter

:11:15. > :11:16.Jaconelli will now be removed from the council's roll of honour first

:11:17. > :11:21.thing in the morning. Still to come,

:11:22. > :11:24.an end of term report on our two We'll be catching up with

:11:25. > :11:30.the escapades of the intrepid trio of football fans from Teesside

:11:31. > :11:32.and Cumbria, walking across South And what does the weather hold for

:11:33. > :11:46.this week? One of the oldest,

:11:47. > :11:49.working passenge world has returned to a Cumbrian

:11:50. > :11:53.lake after months of renovation. The Lady of the Lake went back

:11:54. > :11:56.into Ullswater this morning after a six`month project

:11:57. > :11:59.which saw the leaking deck rebuilt Alison Freeman went to see it regain

:12:00. > :12:03.its rightful place in the team But the Lady of the Lake has spent

:12:04. > :12:12.six months on dry land while tens of thousands of pounds

:12:13. > :12:15.of renovation work was carried out. Specialist craftsmen replaced

:12:16. > :12:18.the leaking wooden deck on one of the world's oldest working

:12:19. > :12:20.passenger steam boats. It might be sunny here at Ullswater

:12:21. > :12:23.today, but as we know, the Cumbrian weather isn't always so

:12:24. > :12:26.kind, and two steel bulkheads were The boating equivalent of an MOT

:12:27. > :12:41.needs to be carried out on Lady It is important not to throw the

:12:42. > :12:45.heritage of way. It would be very easy to make a more practical in

:12:46. > :12:53.some ways, but we would lose the elegance. And that is cocking a

:12:54. > :12:59.snook at the gentleman who designed, which would be a shame.

:13:00. > :13:08.It might be sunny here at Ullswater today, but as we know,

:13:09. > :13:16.the Cumbrian weather isn't always so kind.

:13:17. > :13:26.Two steel bulkheads were moved to create the extra space.

:13:27. > :13:35.The challenge was to create more room.

:13:36. > :13:39.The boating equivalent of an MOT needs to be carried out on Lady

:13:40. > :13:42.before she regains her rightful place in the working fleet

:13:43. > :13:44.of Ullswater steamers in the next few weeks.

:13:45. > :13:59.Alison Freeman, BBC Look North, Ullswater.

:14:00. > :14:01.And with that, it's full steam ahead to

:14:02. > :14:07.So here we are, at the end of another Premier League season.

:14:08. > :14:10.As well as bringing you yesterday's action, we'll look back

:14:11. > :14:13.at how the season panned out for both Sunderland and Newcastle.

:14:14. > :14:16.And we'll start with the Magpies, because despite losing seven

:14:17. > :14:19.of their last eight games, they did finish in the top 10.

:14:20. > :14:21.And their final game was another roller`coaster ride!

:14:22. > :14:24.Yes, games at Anfield tend to be pretty memorable

:14:25. > :14:49.Liverpool were going for the title. But they did play very well.

:14:50. > :14:55.This match was like Newcastle's all season.

:14:56. > :15:06.A couple of dodgy refereeing decisions.

:15:07. > :15:15.That looked a lot worse than it actually was. A corkscrew spin. A

:15:16. > :15:21.reflection of the way it has gone in the last few months.

:15:22. > :15:23.We've had a difficult second half of the season.

:15:24. > :15:29.We should have done better, I should have done better.

:15:30. > :15:32.The first half we were pretty close to where we want to be.

:15:33. > :15:36.We will recruit over the summer and our fans need to see that.

:15:37. > :15:41.If we can recruit well in the summer, hopefully we can come

:15:42. > :15:47.Well, Newcastle might have finished six points higher than they did last

:15:48. > :15:51.season, but there was a very negative end to

:15:52. > :15:54.a campaign that promised so much. Yes, it was a season

:15:55. > :15:58.Pushing for a Champions League spot at one

:15:59. > :16:01.stage, Alan Pardew's own personal highlights were the win at Old

:16:02. > :16:04.Trafford and the victory over Jose Mourinho's Chelsea at St James'.

:16:05. > :16:08.When Yohan Cabaye and Loic Remy were on top form, there seemed

:16:09. > :16:12.And for fans, the departure of Joe Kinnear as Director of Football

:16:13. > :16:15.Yes, he'd failed to replace this fella in

:16:16. > :16:19.January and after Cabaye left for PSG, it was downhill all the way.

:16:20. > :16:21.Newcastle lost both derbies this season 3`0.

:16:22. > :16:26.And then Alan Pardew lost his head in an altercation with

:16:27. > :16:29.Hull's David Meyler ` a three match stadium ban and four

:16:30. > :16:35.It's a good job United did so well at the start because losing

:16:36. > :16:38.eight of their last ten games looked more like relegation form,

:16:39. > :16:40.leaving fans frustrated and calling for the manager to be sacked.

:16:41. > :16:45.But despite rumours it looks like he's staying.

:16:46. > :16:47.Sunderland, of course, were safe from relegation going

:16:48. > :16:50.into their final game of the season at home to Swansea.

:16:51. > :16:53.And that might explain why there was a party atmosphere

:16:54. > :17:01.around the Stadium of Light and why the players maybe weren't as sharp

:17:02. > :17:17.A lot of the players will have been drained after their massive fight

:17:18. > :17:29.back. That was a nice goal, will he stay?

:17:30. > :17:34.It's not looking likely. The fans were in party mood. They

:17:35. > :17:39.just want to hear that Gus Poyet is staying.

:17:40. > :17:43.It's natural in England, as soon as you do a little bit,

:17:44. > :17:47.a little bit, not even big, just a little bit, they say you will

:17:48. > :17:51.I'm really looking forward to the summer.

:17:52. > :17:55.This will probably be the best seven days of my life, the next seven.

:17:56. > :17:59.And I think Gus Poyet deserves a week off after an amazing season

:18:00. > :18:21.This was probably the turning point. Newcastle had a pretty big say in

:18:22. > :18:30.keeping Sunderland up. Then Gus Poyet came in and after a great

:18:31. > :18:43.weekend, heroic defeat. 5`1 at Tottenham. Fortunately for them,

:18:44. > :18:49.they found a miracle. It was party time last week at the

:18:50. > :18:53.stadium of light. Gus Poyet milking the applause.

:18:54. > :18:55.York City are another team hoping to reach Wembley.

:18:56. > :18:59.They'll make another attempt tonight to host the first leg of their

:19:00. > :19:02.Yes, they were due to play Fleetwood at

:19:03. > :19:06.But torrential rain left the pitch unplayable so they'll give

:19:07. > :19:17.We'll have action on our late news at 10.25.

:19:18. > :19:19.So York City are hoping to get to Wembley.

:19:20. > :19:20.Gateshead will play there next weekend.

:19:21. > :19:22.But Northern League side West Auckland,

:19:23. > :19:26.winners of the very first World Cup, beat them both to it, didn't they?

:19:27. > :19:28.That's right, West were hoping to make it six

:19:29. > :19:33.years in a row that a Northern League side won the FA Vase, the cup

:19:34. > :19:37.They lost in the final two years ago against Dunston but John Campbell

:19:38. > :19:40.nearly gave them the lead against South Coast club Sholing.

:19:41. > :19:43.The County Durham hopefuls were made to pay when a wickedly deflected

:19:44. > :19:48.And the equaliser just wouldn't come.

:19:49. > :19:54.Disappointed in the result. But not disappointed we didn't win it. It's

:19:55. > :20:02.just one of them things in cup football.

:20:03. > :20:04.Well, I'm afraid our teams didn't just taste Wembley

:20:05. > :20:10.British Basketball League winners Newcastle Eagles were hoping to be

:20:11. > :20:11.crowned play`off winners at Wembley Arena.

:20:12. > :20:14.Top scoring for the Eagles in front of 8,500 fans were

:20:15. > :20:20.But BBL Trophy winners Worcester were in impressive form and

:20:21. > :20:23.Zaire Taylor's 30 points ensured the Wolves led at the end

:20:24. > :20:27.of each quarter, whatever Eagles player`coach Fab

:20:28. > :20:34.So disappointment for Fab and Co at the end.

:20:35. > :20:43.It was Worcester, who took the trophy by 90 points to 78.

:20:44. > :20:44.So, the football season's nearly over!

:20:45. > :20:47.Just the play`offs to come, then the World Cup starts!

:20:48. > :20:55.You might recall our report on the three England fans who were setting

:20:56. > :20:58.out to walk across South America to the World Cup finals in Brazil.

:20:59. > :21:03.They're raising money for charity by walking 1,966km, a memorable number

:21:04. > :21:06.for football fans, through three countries and 29 towns and villages.

:21:07. > :21:09.Well, so far they've been chased by bulls, been electrocuted and

:21:10. > :21:15.Stuart Whincup caught up with them in Uruguay.

:21:16. > :21:18.Three men trekking across South America with their golf trolleys.

:21:19. > :21:20.This is what's meant by budget travel.

:21:21. > :21:22.Even the little luxuries seem a little painful.

:21:23. > :21:25.Playing football along the way, they've been struck

:21:26. > :21:28.by the kindness they've received in small villages like Baldi.

:21:29. > :21:31.They've opened their doors to us, they've fed us, let us watch

:21:32. > :21:35.the foodball at their house and have arranged for us to be able to

:21:36. > :21:39.get safely across to the next town, because it's quite a rough area.

:21:40. > :21:41.They did everything they could for us.

:21:42. > :21:46.They left Mendoza in Argentina on the first of March.

:21:47. > :21:50.They've opened their doors to us, they've fed us, let us watch

:21:58. > :22:00.They left Mendoza in Argentina on the first of March.

:22:01. > :22:03.They've now passed the Uruguayan capital of Montevideo and are close

:22:04. > :22:07.They're due to arrive in Porto Alegre in Brazil

:22:08. > :22:16.on June the 8th, four days before the World Cup starts.

:22:17. > :22:20.We camp on beaches and things at the moment,

:22:21. > :22:23.and we're managing to find places where we can buy meat to barbecue.

:22:24. > :22:32.But the gang of three has now become four.

:22:33. > :22:34.Walking through Punta Negra on the Uruguayan coast,

:22:35. > :22:40.We've had quite a few that have followed us for maybe a kilometre

:22:41. > :22:46.In the first instance, we thought, he stinks, we would have to run.

:22:47. > :22:50.But by the end of the day, we had grown quite fond of him.

:22:51. > :22:53.Jefferson's now part of the team, having followed the boys for

:22:54. > :22:57.And as they all head to Brazil, the end of their remaerkable journey

:22:58. > :23:26.Over the next few days, fewer scenes like this. We will have fewer

:23:27. > :23:33.showers, more sunshine and getting warmer. This evening, further heavy

:23:34. > :23:45.showers to come for a time. Some lightning around your area as well.

:23:46. > :23:52.`` the York area. Quite chilly tomorrow morning first thing. A few

:23:53. > :23:57.isolated showers, but much more sunshine, especially for the East.

:23:58. > :24:03.Through the afternoon, things can change again with more showers

:24:04. > :24:12.developing in the North. Top temperature 13 Celsius, with light
