:00:10. > :00:11.Hello, good evening. time for the

:00:12. > :00:14.Hello, good evening. Hundreds of English Defence League

:00:15. > :00:17.supporters have marched through the centre of Newcastle. They were met

:00:18. > :00:20.by a rival demonstration ` with the two groups kept apart by a massive

:00:21. > :00:27.police presence. Peter Harris reports.

:00:28. > :00:29.They'd come from far and wide. Several hundred English Defence

:00:30. > :00:34.League supporters, marching through the city centre. The police say the

:00:35. > :00:37.English Defence League had initially wanted to march through the

:00:38. > :00:40.ethnically`mixed west end of the city. They were told they couldn't

:00:41. > :00:44.do that, and a compromise was eventually reached last night.

:00:45. > :00:51.Instead they made their way to the city's Leazes Park, where they were

:00:52. > :00:54.met by a noisy counter demo. We want to give a clear message to the

:00:55. > :00:57.English Defence League that they're not welcome. We won't confront them.

:00:58. > :01:01.Police will be there. But we want them to hear our voice. The diverse

:01:02. > :01:06.voice of Newcastle, that the EDL is fascism. Racism is not welcome in

:01:07. > :01:09.our city. Inside the park the EDL group heard speeches, still angry at

:01:10. > :01:23.being stopped from marching their preferred route to the west end. I

:01:24. > :01:27.live in the west end... We're more than welcome. We're wanted there!

:01:28. > :01:29.Speakers also made reference to the ongoing Northumbria Police

:01:30. > :01:32.investigation Operation Sanctuary, into the alleged abuse of young

:01:33. > :01:36.women. The police stress it involves people from a range of communities.

:01:37. > :01:40.The force says the demos passed off peacefully. There's been minimal

:01:41. > :01:45.disruption. No arrests or incidents of note. I'd like to take the

:01:46. > :01:50.opportunity to thank the public for their patience and co`operation. The

:01:51. > :01:59.marchers dispersed and the police say they'll have their usual patrols

:02:00. > :02:02.in the city centre tonight. A week since the disappearance of

:02:03. > :02:04.19`year`old Durham University student Luke Pearce, police say

:02:05. > :02:08.they'll hand out leaflets tonight, hoping to jog people's memories.

:02:09. > :02:11.Luke was last seen walking along the river bank in the early hours of

:02:12. > :02:15.last Sunday morning after a night out. Officers will focus on the

:02:16. > :02:21.Jimmy Allen's and Baths Bridge area of the city this evening.

:02:22. > :02:23.Campaigners took to the streets of Newcastle today calling for

:02:24. > :02:26.dedicated lanes for cyclists. The event was part of a national

:02:27. > :02:29.campaign called Space for Cycling. And around 100 cyclists, including

:02:30. > :02:37.young children, demonstrated their support by cycling through the city

:02:38. > :02:38.centre. The message is give us space for

:02:39. > :02:49.cycling. It's setting aside more space. Cycling, walking, taking the

:02:50. > :02:53.bus... The active forms of transport can take prime position in the city.

:02:54. > :03:01.Cars have to start to take the back seat.

:03:02. > :03:04.Around 300 rowing crews from across the country have been taking to the

:03:05. > :03:08.River Tees at Stockton today, as part of the annual Tees Regatta.

:03:09. > :03:11.It's the only buoyed course in the North of England and this year's

:03:12. > :03:15.event marks the 150th anniversary of the Tees Rowing Club, who run the

:03:16. > :03:17.event. More than 750 rowers in all have been competing since nine

:03:18. > :03:21.o'clock this morning. Some have travelled from as far afield as

:03:22. > :03:24.Sussex to take part. This year's regatta has seen a large number of

:03:25. > :03:26.school teams signing up, in preparation for the National Schools

:03:27. > :03:31.Championships, next week. The north east is very big on rowing

:03:32. > :03:38.at the moment. We've got some really good potential coming through. We've

:03:39. > :03:46.got all the other GB sections covered by crews and competitors

:03:47. > :03:50.from Tees and the Tyne. Football ` and York City just failed

:03:51. > :03:53.to reach the League Two promotion play`off final. They needed to beat

:03:54. > :03:56.Fleetwood in their semi final second leg last night, but it ended

:03:57. > :04:00.scoreless. So the Lancashire club go through.

:04:01. > :04:02.But of course hopes are high for Gateshead at Wembley tomorrow, in

:04:03. > :04:05.their Conference playoff final against Cambridge. Full radio

:04:06. > :04:08.commentary on BBC Newcastle. And we'll have the goals and reaction

:04:09. > :04:14.from Wembley here on Look North tomorrow evening.

:04:15. > :04:15.For many, the weather has been glorious today. How about tomorrow?

:04:16. > :04:35.Jen Bartram can tell us. It looks like it will be dry and

:04:36. > :04:52.fine. The wind will pick up slightly. 11 or 12 degrees. Sunday

:04:53. > :04:56.has a bright start. Feeling warm once again.

:04:57. > :04:59.That's it for now. Sunday Politics looks ahead to next week's local

:05:00. > :05:02.elections. That's at 11am tomorrow morning, and we'll be back with the

:05:03. > :05:09.action from Wembley tomorrow evening. Bye for now.

:05:10. > :05:18.Good evening. Who needs an expensive holiday? Today at 24 degrees,

:05:19. > :05:21.Suffolk was warmer than Ibiza and Crete. There was lots of warm

:05:22. > :05:22.sunshine to
