:01:13. > :01:15.in the early hours, heard across a wide area of the chty.
:01:16. > :01:17.Today, Northumbria Police revealed the two
:01:18. > :01:20.Russians, both students at the University, are being questhoned.
:01:21. > :01:22.Gerry Jackson joins us from outside the building
:01:23. > :01:34.Take us through what happendd, Gerry.
:01:35. > :01:44.Circumstances are still not clear. But bomb disposal officers were
:01:45. > :01:48.called here. We understand this is a mixture of teaching rooms and
:01:49. > :01:53.student accommodation. They came across what they called potdntially
:01:54. > :02:00.suspicious items. Roads werd cordoned off. The bus station was
:02:01. > :02:11.closed. The university building was closed. Last night an 18`ye`r`old
:02:12. > :02:16.man was arrested in London. Two day we learned that two men are being
:02:17. > :02:25.held. They are both Russian students, both 18, and both studying
:02:26. > :02:30.here at the University. We do know that something w`s blown
:02:31. > :02:37.up by Army bomb disposal officers? We do. Just after midnight `
:02:38. > :02:49.controlled explosion took place one mile away from here. Twitter was
:02:50. > :02:56.rife with speculation. But the police have never referred to a
:02:57. > :03:05.bomber. They say the exploshon was a precaution and there is no further
:03:06. > :03:11.cause for concern for the ptblic. The police and the teachers told us
:03:12. > :03:22.to come outside. What was the atmosphere like? We were very
:03:23. > :03:25.alarmed. We were very frightened. We have been keen to talk to the
:03:26. > :03:32.police and the University authorities, but this enquiry is so
:03:33. > :03:42.sensitive that the university was advised not to talk on camera. We
:03:43. > :03:49.talked to a bar manager who found himself behind the police cordoned.
:03:50. > :04:01.I was a bit nervous. I am a student as well. There is concern for
:04:02. > :04:11.everyone when that happens. They cordoned off a large area bdcause it
:04:12. > :04:16.was attracting people at th`t point. Two students in custody tonhght At
:04:17. > :04:20.least one item found here that was blown up. Many more questions to be
:04:21. > :04:28.answered. The police say thhs could all take some time.
:04:29. > :04:30.Unemployment in the North East has gone up `gain.
:04:31. > :04:40.Figures released today show there were 131,000 jobless people
:04:41. > :04:43.in the period from February to April ` that's a rise of 6,000,
:04:44. > :04:47.In Cumbria the number of people claiming Jobseekers'
:04:48. > :04:51.But in spite of that rise in North East unemployment, thdre is
:04:52. > :04:56.Manufacturers have said thex are at their most optimistic
:04:57. > :05:06.Our Business Correspondent Han Reeve reports.
:05:07. > :05:24.And Mud told us everything was dynamite.
:05:25. > :05:28.The Conservative government cut taxes, increased spending.
:05:29. > :05:37.But now, according to the elployers? organisation the CBI, manuf`cturers
:05:38. > :05:42.are at their most optimistic about creating jobs since that 973
:05:43. > :05:48.boom, and reversing today's rise in North East unemployment.
:05:49. > :05:52.This car parts company near Redcar illustrates the point.
:05:53. > :05:56.It supplies all the big car makers and employs 85
:05:57. > :06:12.We have just opened a new extension to the factory. We are incrdasing
:06:13. > :06:16.our capacity by 50%. That is a reflection of where we are going. It
:06:17. > :06:19.is giving us the opportunitx to grow even further.
:06:20. > :06:21.Stuart has already benefited from the rise in company optimism,
:06:22. > :06:23.plucked from nine months of unemployment to
:06:24. > :06:40.I felt like I had won the lottery. It looks well for everybody.
:06:41. > :06:42.So this is the kind of employer a manufacturer,
:06:43. > :06:46.Buoyed along on that wave of optimism not seen since 0973
:06:47. > :07:03.Strikes, a winter of discontent and some hard times lay ahe`d.
:07:04. > :07:06.Well Ian is in our Tees newsroom now.
:07:07. > :07:09.So there was bad news on North East unemployment, but more bad news
:07:10. > :07:26.Yes there was. Wages grew bx only 0.7%. Wages are not keeping place
:07:27. > :07:36.with the price of everything that we buy. `` keeping pace. But more
:07:37. > :07:41.people are getting into work. It seems odd that you can have a rise
:07:42. > :07:52.in employment and also a rise in unemployment. But 15,000 more people
:07:53. > :07:56.have got a job in this area in the last three months compared to the
:07:57. > :08:02.A man has been charged with manslaughter following the deaths of
:08:03. > :08:05.a mother and daughter from carbon monoxide poisoning on board a cabin
:08:06. > :08:08.Kelly Webster, who was 36, `nd her 10`year`old daughter Lauren Thornton
:08:09. > :08:11.were killed by the fumes from an ill`fitted petrol generator.
:08:12. > :08:14.Her partner, Matthew Eteson, who was also on board the boat,
:08:15. > :08:20.has been charged with mansl`ughter by gross negligence.
:08:21. > :08:23.The public are being warned of a reduced level
:08:24. > :08:26.of emergency fire cover tomorrow, as the Fire Brigades Union holds its
:08:27. > :08:32.The stoppage coincides with the start of the World Cup, which it's
:08:33. > :08:35.feared could put extra demand on replacement crews being brotght in.
:08:36. > :08:40.The Fire Brigades Union dispute over pensions reform is now
:08:41. > :08:51.In response to criticism ovdr the timing of the strike, the union
:08:52. > :09:14.If it is in the winter we are accused of bad timing. Likewise if
:09:15. > :09:28.it is in the summer. If the public have an emergency incident, dial
:09:29. > :09:33.999. It will be prioritised on life risk.
:09:34. > :09:35.The union claims public support for the stoppage.
:09:36. > :09:38.None of the people we asked were even aware the strike was h`ppening,
:09:39. > :09:41.but the sympathies of almost all lay in the same place.
:09:42. > :10:00.With the firemen. Why should they have to retire without a pension or
:10:01. > :10:05.work until 60? Unless the Government and the union can come up whth an
:10:06. > :10:15.agreement they will be a further strike on Saturday the 21st of June.
:10:16. > :10:17.There's been a big rise in the number of serious incidents
:10:18. > :10:19.reported at hospitals in Carlisle and Whitehaven.
:10:20. > :10:24.One patient even had the wrong part of their body operated on.
:10:25. > :10:26.Figures released by the North Cumbria University Hospitals
:10:27. > :10:29.Trust show that there were 000 serious incidents in the last year.
:10:30. > :10:35.Mark McAlindon is in our Culbria newsroom now.
:10:36. > :10:50.The kind of things we are t`lking about could include staff or patient
:10:51. > :11:01.abuse, or the expected death of the patient. Officials at the trust say
:11:02. > :11:15.this. In the past few inciddnts where reported. Here is the medical
:11:16. > :11:21.director of the trust. It is absolutely a good thing that there
:11:22. > :11:26.is a lot of evidence that staff only report a proportion of incidents.
:11:27. > :11:30.The more that they report the more opportunity we have to look for
:11:31. > :11:36.patterns, underlying root c`uses of what is going on.

:11:41. > :11:52.There were four of these evdnts But the spokesperson says every hospital

:12:04. > :12:20.Broadly they agree that there is greater openness. They do still have
:12:21. > :12:25.some concerns. The Care Quality Commission has raised concerns about

:14:58. > :15:04.we do will impact upon the new exhibit.
:15:05. > :15:13.This team is working with the Government on developing a
:15:14. > :15:25.biodiversity policy. This is about a broader conservation communhty. This
:15:26. > :15:45.And next year 's intake could be reintroducing animals that were
:15:46. > :16:01.extinct in the wild. Some animals have been released into semh`captive
:16:02. > :16:07.environments. The next challenge could begin on the doorstep in North
:16:08. > :16:14.They've walked for 100 days, passed through Argentina and Uruguay
:16:15. > :16:16.and have now arrived in Brazil for the World Cup.

:16:20. > :16:27.we've been following have w`lked 1,966 kilometres and raised more
:16:28. > :16:30.than ?10,000 to buy a well for a drought`hit area of Brazil.

:16:34. > :16:36.the stray dog that had followed the lads for 500 miles was reunited

:18:22. > :18:26.along the way, who'd shared their food, wine and homes with

:23:53. > :24:03.is, at the age of 16, in thd middle of his GCSEs, taking part in the

:24:18. > :24:34.mentioned that he swims. My eyes lit up. He had two major operathons I
:24:35. > :24:48.did not know where they would be able to swim. It is great to see him
:24:49. > :24:54.now sitting here. He will almost certainly beat me by a mile. With a
:24:55. > :25:08.trained instructor to hand they were off.
