:00:00. > :00:17.cooler through the weekend, but the weather is looking pretty

:00:18. > :00:31.Plans for a spectacular opening ceremony as the Great North Run

:00:32. > :00:34.prepares for its millionth runner this year. And we catch up with

:00:35. > :00:37.the Antiques Roadshow team as hundreds of hopefuls dust down

:00:38. > :00:42.In sport, Hartlepool's Graele Storm flies the flag for the north east

:00:43. > :00:47.And Yorkshire's Joe Root top scores for England to help rescue

:00:48. > :01:02.the first day of the first test against Sri Lanka.

:01:03. > :01:04.There's been a dramatic escalation in thd

:01:05. > :01:07.investigation into the explosives alert at Newcastle University.

:01:08. > :01:14.The North East Counter Terrorism Unit has now taken over

:01:15. > :01:16.the operation, after a second alert on the campus.

:01:17. > :01:19.Early this morning, police evacuated a housing block

:01:20. > :01:22.after finding another suspicious substance, 48 hours on from a

:01:23. > :01:27.The bomb squad spent much of the day at the University, and withhn the

:01:28. > :01:30.last hour Northumbria policd have been giving us more information

:01:31. > :01:33.Peter Harris is live at their Ponteland HQ now.

:01:34. > :01:45.If there was any doubt about the potential seriousness of thhs

:01:46. > :01:50.investigation, it has been removed in the last half`hour, without

:01:51. > :01:54.confirmation that police have handed this over to the north`east

:01:55. > :01:58.counterterrorism unit. How did this begin? We have discovered this

:01:59. > :02:04.evening that it started with suspicions about an individtal

:02:05. > :02:09.student, about concerns of changes in his behaviour. It turns out a

:02:10. > :02:13.neighbourhood police officer went to his room, but a look around, find

:02:14. > :02:19.items they were not happy whth and from there, this whole thing took

:02:20. > :02:23.off. There was an evacuation, the discovery of suspicious substances

:02:24. > :02:27.and later on, that student was tracked down and arrested in central

:02:28. > :02:34.London. The police have been telling us what happened when they went that

:02:35. > :02:41.student's room. A number of items were seen in the bedroom whhch gave

:02:42. > :02:45.cause for concern and we lalented a well`established response plan,

:02:46. > :02:51.which included evacuation of the building and pigmentation of

:02:52. > :02:54.cordons. In line with nationally agreed protocols, counterterrorism

:02:55. > :03:00.officers attended the scene and as a result of their initial assdssment,

:03:01. > :03:04.a military explosive unit attended the scene. Following a detahled

:03:05. > :03:09.assessment, the items were identified as being exposes. They

:03:10. > :03:18.were removed by the militarx in a controlled explosion, carridd out at

:03:19. > :03:20.exposition Park. With all of this upheaval today, what our sttdents

:03:21. > :03:26.and staff saying? There is an alarm, if anythhng, it's

:03:27. > :03:33.curiosity. Many students have gone home. We have been speaking to both

:03:34. > :03:39.students and to staff. It is fortunate that the exam perhod has

:03:40. > :03:42.just finished and there are few students left in most of thd

:03:43. > :03:53.University. Yes, just a bit of disruption for us.

:03:54. > :03:58.We still have two Russian students under arrest. They have not been

:03:59. > :04:04.charged. One is being held `t a police station in central London.

:04:05. > :04:09.Another is being held at a police station in the Northumbria police

:04:10. > :04:12.dash area. The student being held in London is being held under the

:04:13. > :04:17.counterterrorism act. The other student is being held on suspicion

:04:18. > :04:22.of conspiracy to commit gridvous bodily harm. Also, under

:04:23. > :04:28.investigation for explosive devices. This is a fast`moving

:04:29. > :04:31.investigation. It is now with the north`east counterterrorism unit. We

:04:32. > :04:45.will follow it through the dvening and will have more at 10:25pm. What

:04:46. > :04:50.do we know about where this investigation started?

:04:51. > :04:55.It is a shiny new bit of Newcastle University. It opened in September

:04:56. > :05:01.2012. It is basically descrhbed as the campus language centre. The

:05:02. > :05:11.university is keen to show ht off. It plays a key role for

:05:12. > :05:17.international students. Applications are made to it by a direct

:05:18. > :05:23.admissions centre. We also know that 533 students actually live hn that

:05:24. > :05:28.part of the university as wdll. How many international studdnts are

:05:29. > :05:30.there as Newcastle University? There are about 4000 intern`tional

:05:31. > :05:35.students at university. Thex come from 110 different nationalhties,

:05:36. > :05:42.across the world. Russian students in particular are very welcome. They

:05:43. > :05:46.have a good reputation. There is even a special Russian scholarship

:05:47. > :05:49.for those particular students. These students are important

:05:50. > :05:55.financially as well, aren't there? They are, because of the gap between

:05:56. > :05:59.EU students and the amount international students pay. A

:06:00. > :06:04.chemistry student, a three`xear course, a UK student would pay

:06:05. > :06:10.?27,000 over three years. An international student would pay

:06:11. > :06:15.?46,470. The gap gets even bigger longer the longer the coursd.

:06:16. > :06:22.Looking at Madison, a five`xear course costs ?36,000 for a TK

:06:23. > :06:25.student. The International student will pay ?116,990 for the fhve`year

:06:26. > :06:29.course. We heard about suspicions bding

:06:30. > :06:34.raised. Does the University security that the students?

:06:35. > :06:39.It doesn't. What it says is that basically, it follows the home

:06:40. > :06:45.office these procedures. Thdy are vetted effectively at that stage.

:06:46. > :06:46.University is keen to that ht is business as usual, academic`lly

:06:47. > :07:02.Academic life goes on. Thousands of jobs and hundrdds

:07:03. > :07:07.of millions of pounds pumped It's claimed that could be the

:07:08. > :07:23.outcome of an ?80 million The scheme has been proposed

:07:24. > :07:27.by Darlington council and Tdesside and Darlington's Local Enterprise

:07:28. > :07:28.Partnership, the body that brings togethdr

:07:29. > :07:30.businesses and local authorhties. Our Business Correspondent Han Reeve

:07:31. > :07:39.reports. It is estimated that passengers

:07:40. > :07:46.alighting at this station spend ?5 million in the local economx. But

:07:47. > :07:49.this man, the boss of Teeside enterprise agency, along with

:07:50. > :07:54.Darlington Council, thinks xet more potential exists. Spend mondy

:07:55. > :07:57.upgrading the station and the benefits would be enormous. There

:07:58. > :08:01.will be a significant incre`se to the local economy. That would be in

:08:02. > :08:05.terms of hundreds of millions of pounds over the period. If xou think

:08:06. > :08:09.about 25,000 new jobs, the hncomes they would have, so you can see it

:08:10. > :08:16.is a significant boost which would come. Unsurprisingly, busindsses

:08:17. > :08:21.like the idea. This engineering company is in favour. But whth a

:08:22. > :08:25.caveat. There is no point stepping of the station to be met with a wall

:08:26. > :08:29.of traffic or inadequate infrastructure to get away xou need

:08:30. > :08:33.to be. We are two or three liles from the train station but ht can

:08:34. > :08:39.take 20 minutes on a bad dax. There is a hedge. The station is owned by

:08:40. > :08:45.network rail. It is spending cash if spending has been allocated until

:08:46. > :08:46.2019 and Darlington is not hn its plans. The regeneration could be a

:08:47. > :08:51.long time coming. A man arrested on suspicion

:08:52. > :08:53.of murdering the York chef Claudia Lawrence has been rd`bailed

:08:54. > :08:55.by police. Claudia has been missing

:08:56. > :08:58.for more than five years. A 59`year`old man was arrested

:08:59. > :09:01.last month then released on bail. North Yorkshire Police say

:09:02. > :09:05.further enquiries are being made. The Fire Brigades' Union is out

:09:06. > :09:08.on strike across the region today, after starting a 24`hour walkout

:09:09. > :09:12.at 9am. Contingency plans are in pl`ce

:09:13. > :09:15.to provide emergency cover. The strike is part

:09:16. > :09:18.of a national dispute over proposed Carlisle's Conservative MP John

:09:19. > :09:23.Stevenson is writing to North West Ambulance Service to object to cuts

:09:24. > :09:34.to the service in Cumbria. It is reducing Carlisle's nhght`time

:09:35. > :09:41.cover and removing Penrith's Meanwhile the

:09:42. > :09:44.North East Ambulance Servicd has Yvonne Ormston has worked

:09:45. > :09:48.for the NHS locally for mord than 30 years, most recently as

:09:49. > :09:50.Deputy Chief Executive of G`teshead She replaces Simon Featherstone

:09:51. > :09:53.who is retiring The Great North Run is to bd the

:09:54. > :10:01.first event of its kind in the world To mark the countdown to thhs year's

:10:02. > :10:07.event, a spectacular opening ceremony is being held on

:10:08. > :10:13.the Newcastle Gateshead quaxside. And the organisers are lookhng

:10:14. > :10:15.for 1,500 volunteers to It's the world biggest half

:10:16. > :10:21.marathon and it's about to This year, the Great North Run will

:10:22. > :10:28.reach its one millionth runner. And to celebrate this milestone

:10:29. > :10:41.an opening ceremony like no other. They will be a stage in the middle,

:10:42. > :10:44.there will be music, there will be lighting on the Sage. They will be

:10:45. > :10:49.camaraderie and a fantastic atmosphere. Just like the great

:10:50. > :10:53.North run, it is not made bx the organisers but by the peopld who

:10:54. > :10:55.take part. This event will be manufactured by us but it whll be

:10:56. > :10:56.celebrated by the people of the region who come and supporthve, just

:10:57. > :11:02.like they do with the event. The epic one

:11:03. > :11:05.off event will be inspired by the sporting and industrial heritage

:11:06. > :11:08.of the region and masterminded by the man behind London 2002

:11:09. > :11:14.Paralympic Opening ceremony. What I wanted to do with thhs

:11:15. > :11:20.ceremony was celebrate the spirit of running for everyone. 1 million is

:11:21. > :11:24.much more than just a statistic It is a movement, a sporting movement

:11:25. > :11:29.that comes out of the north`east's amazing traditions of

:11:30. > :11:31.participation, endeavour, industry and ingenuity.

:11:32. > :11:34.Organiser have enlisted the very best people to create a spectacle

:11:35. > :11:40.But they don't have long to do it in.

:11:41. > :11:46.It is less than three months to go before the opening ceremony and the

:11:47. > :11:50.creative team have a mind boggling amounts to do before then, not least

:11:51. > :11:55.to find 1500 volunteer performers. They are looking for people over the

:11:56. > :11:56.age of 16, of all abilities, to take part in the biggest event the

:11:57. > :12:00.quayside has ever seen. Sharuna, the organisers say

:12:01. > :12:05.they need 1,500 volunteers. Where are they going

:12:06. > :12:07.to find them all? They've been

:12:08. > :12:14.in touch with dance groups, But they want everyone to gdt

:12:15. > :12:20.involved, even you Jeff you have be over 16 but other that you don't

:12:21. > :12:25.actually need to have any abilities. Just like with

:12:26. > :12:27.the London 2012 opening and closing ceremonies and there were streams of

:12:28. > :12:30.people involved in the performance. To find out how you can voltnteer

:12:31. > :12:37.just go the website, gnrmillion org, You might know this already,

:12:38. > :12:51.the World Cup kicks off tod`y. And this is definitely

:12:52. > :12:54.a pub to avoid for the next month Landlord Norman Scott has covered

:12:55. > :12:58.the Robin Hood pub in Jarrow with giant flags representing all 32

:12:59. > :13:01.competing nations. He's probably hoping for lots

:13:02. > :13:06.of extra time, too. Yes, in little more than a couple

:13:07. > :13:09.of hours from now the And a group of 50 supporters

:13:10. > :13:13.from the region will soon bd But these are England fans with

:13:14. > :13:16.a heart. They're not just going

:13:17. > :13:19.for the football, they'll spend the next few weeks as volunteers

:13:20. > :13:22.on a building project in a deprived This is where 300 volunteers

:13:23. > :13:39.from 11 countries, 50 of thdm from the North East are heading all

:13:40. > :13:48.there with Lionsraw, a Teesside We are going to be building a big

:13:49. > :13:51.football centre in one of the favelas. We are going to be building

:13:52. > :13:55.a big football centre in ond of the favelas. The back.

:13:56. > :14:09.Four years ago BBC Look North followed volunteers to South Africa

:14:10. > :14:12.for the 2010 World Cup. But for this organisition is

:14:13. > :14:19.They've raised more than 3/4 million to build these changing rools

:14:20. > :14:21.for Cleveland Juniors Footb`ll Club in Middlesbrough.

:14:22. > :14:35.It is important to reach out at home as well as abroad. There have been

:14:36. > :14:39.more protests in Brazil tod`y. The charity says it is sympathetic to

:14:40. > :14:46.the opposition. We don't like the way that world cups are run. We

:14:47. > :14:50.don't know... We stand with the poor. We help the poor. We don't

:14:51. > :14:53.take from a country, we givd to a country. We are doing more hn South

:14:54. > :14:58.Africa now, four year on, than during the World Cup. If it cannot

:14:59. > :15:01.say that. We stand with people possibly stand with their

:15:02. > :15:07.frustrations that there are no jobs, while there are gleamhng

:15:08. > :15:38.stadiums that no one will ever use. We go along to make a difference.

:15:39. > :15:47.Capturing Cumbria's history on camera. Items from across the ages

:15:48. > :15:53.took centre stage at this c`stle, as the antiques road show film part of

:15:54. > :15:56.its 37th series. I go to thd reception where everyone has two

:15:57. > :16:00.come to begin with, and we look at what they brought. I'm lookhng for

:16:01. > :16:01.stories, looking for things forth to film. That is what I spend ly day

:16:02. > :16:09.doing. Tins from Carrs Biscuit factory

:16:10. > :16:11.in Carlisle caught the eye And of course, everyone's interested

:16:12. > :16:22.in that all important valuation Our shops to find out this was worth

:16:23. > :16:26.?800. I was brought up in C`rlisle with the smell of the biscuht works

:16:27. > :16:28.and I love these things. A toy car, which survived

:16:29. > :16:33.the Cockermouth floods was valued There's been a great turn ott here

:16:34. > :17:00.at Lowther Castle today with Even in its condition, I'm saying it

:17:01. > :17:04.is worth ?2000. The programme will be aired

:17:05. > :17:10.in September. If you've ever found

:17:11. > :17:13.a train journey a little monotonous, here's an idea that's just been

:17:14. > :17:16.tried out on the East Coast mainline Middlesbrough comedian

:17:17. > :17:21.Patrick Monahan entertained people Jonathan Swingler took

:17:22. > :17:25.the trip with him. But this man says he has

:17:26. > :17:30.a way to make the train journey from Kings Cross to Darlington

:17:31. > :17:36.a lot better for passengers. He's managed to get his own

:17:37. > :17:42.carriage, with space for an audience Patrick is raising money

:17:43. > :17:56.for the Railway Children. Mark or do a half an hour tour,

:17:57. > :18:09.preparation of sandwiches. Hello, is Batman there? It's an emergdncy We

:18:10. > :18:14.left London two hours ago and he is still up and down the carri`ges

:18:15. > :18:21.telling jokes. Most, G shows, you might do an hour and a half. ` most

:18:22. > :18:24.comedy shows. This is a thrde hour train journey, where you ard doing

:18:25. > :18:29.stand`up pretty much before people come on, three hours while they are

:18:30. > :18:33.going and there is one minute for people to get fined for new people

:18:34. > :18:39.to get on. It is like doing a marathon. He is very funny `nd it's

:18:40. > :18:41.a great idea. I thought it was great. A different journey. I wasn't

:18:42. > :18:45.expecting it. After three hours of stand tp

:18:46. > :18:48.comedy, it's time to stop. It's hoped this idea could become

:18:49. > :18:56.a regular thing. We've made it to Darlington I hope

:18:57. > :19:03.he wasn't an acquired carri`ge. Golf and all eyes at Rockliffe Hall

:19:04. > :19:06.Golf Club are looking across the Atlantic to their professional

:19:07. > :19:09.Graeme Storm, who's currently flying the flag for the North East

:19:10. > :19:12.in the toughest tournament hn the After a couple of practice rounds,

:19:13. > :19:16.Storm, who hails from Hartldpool, has already described Pinehtrst

:19:17. > :19:18.as the meanest golf course he's The Head Pro at Rockliffe

:19:19. > :19:29.knows better than most how Stormy, as he's affectionately known here,

:19:30. > :19:31.has prepared for possibly For just a few days ago Stormy

:19:32. > :19:50.was alongside Jon, fine tunhng his He was swinging well. He pl`yed last

:19:51. > :19:57.Friday and shot nine under, eight under on the back nine. A pretty

:19:58. > :20:02.good effort. A new course rdcord. He couldn't be going there in better

:20:03. > :20:11.form. Said good luck and enjoy to him. I am sure he will enjox it It

:20:12. > :20:12.would be nice for him to put the north`east of England on thd golfing

:20:13. > :20:14.map. We will see. With some bookies,

:20:15. > :20:16.you could have got odds But as any golfer will happhly

:20:17. > :20:24.tell you, you just never know! Yorkshire's Joe Root helped steady

:20:25. > :20:28.a rather shaky England start to the first test against Sri Lanka

:20:29. > :20:31.at Lord's. Gary Ballance hit 23

:20:32. > :20:34.before being caught by Mahela Jayawardene but it w`s a

:20:35. > :20:39.sensible and composed innings from Root that helped restore England to

:20:40. > :20:41.a relatively respectable score. His fifth test match 50 camd

:20:42. > :20:45.off 106 balls and he put on 88 runs with Moeen Ali, England's hhghest

:20:46. > :20:57.wicket partnership. Durham's Joasia Zakrzewski has been

:20:58. > :20:59.named in Scotland's Women's Marathon She comes in for the injured

:21:00. > :21:05.Freya Ross. While Cumbrian driver Oliver Turvey

:21:06. > :21:09.will race for JOTA Sport in this weekend's Le Mans 24

:21:10. > :21:12.Hours Race after being calldd in And Newcastle Falcons forward

:21:13. > :21:16.Kieran Brookes will get the chance to earn his first full international

:21:17. > :21:20.cap after being named on thd bench for England ahead of Saturd`y's

:21:21. > :21:43.second test against New Zealand Time to meet our judges for the

:21:44. > :21:48.pictures. We've been off to Wearside.

:21:49. > :21:56.It's a fact that one in thrde cars built in the UK have been btilt

:21:57. > :22:00.right here. This Sunderland plant turns out to new cars every minute.

:22:01. > :22:05.Last year alone, over 500,000 cars rolled off the production lhne. And

:22:06. > :22:11.these are some of the peopld who keep the plant operating smoothly. I

:22:12. > :22:16.am a maintenance team leader. I ve worked here for 27 years. I was one

:22:17. > :22:22.of the original trainees. They keep the engine ticking over. I have a

:22:23. > :22:29.maintenance instalment. I'vd been with the company for 25 years. My

:22:30. > :22:33.name is insane. I mean the maintenance technician. I work in a

:22:34. > :22:42.plastic workshop. I been here for 19 years. They keep the press hs

:22:43. > :22:45.pressing. My name is James. I'm a fifth year trainee. I work within

:22:46. > :22:54.the press shop and I am qualified in September. Will they be abld to

:22:55. > :23:00.handle the pressure of choosing our winning weather picture? Yotr

:23:01. > :23:02.selection brought us some interesting clouds, some interesting

:23:03. > :23:10.wildlife and of course, somd great bluebells. But what was it that

:23:11. > :23:14.caught the eye of our judges? The first runner up is Dan Myers. It's a

:23:15. > :23:23.very atmospheric picture with the sun peeping through.

:23:24. > :23:40.The second runner up... It hs a set of beautifully by the seasonal

:23:41. > :23:47.bluebells in the foreground. This was by David Stevenson.

:23:48. > :23:54.There can only be one winner and it is back to the Co Durham co`stline

:23:55. > :23:57.for that. The winner was Jalie McElderry from Washington. His photo

:23:58. > :24:03.was a First World War metal sculpture. We thought the phcture

:24:04. > :24:09.instantly stands out. It is a good step fashion sense of depth. It is a

:24:10. > :24:15.difficult decision to pick ` winner but congratulations to Jamid. I am

:24:16. > :24:22.sure the picture will look great in next year's calendar.

:24:23. > :24:28.Keep your June weather picttres coming in. Check out the website.

:24:29. > :24:33.Your something a little unusual This time of year, parent bhrds are

:24:34. > :24:37.in a frenzy, feeding their xoung, but this blackbird spotted `n

:24:38. > :24:46.opportunity it was not going to miss. Nothing ventured, nothing

:24:47. > :24:57.gained. It was quite a surprise when the bird made off with the whole

:24:58. > :25:05.thing. It will be a different sort of day tomorrow. It will be pretty

:25:06. > :25:10.warm if you're out and about. Tonight, that I've starts to thicken

:25:11. > :25:15.from the north. It will bring patchy rain through the night. Further

:25:16. > :25:18.south, it will stay dry but I will keep temperatures in double

:25:19. > :25:25.figures. The winds will stax fairly light as well. Tomorrow, generally

:25:26. > :25:29.speaking, cloudier. It will be thick enough for some patchy rain first

:25:30. > :25:31.thing. Then maybe one or two brighter spells breaking out before

:25:32. > :25:39.the rain returns, more especially to northern areas. It will not rain

:25:40. > :25:48.everywhere but bright spells will be short lived after... With more

:25:49. > :25:52.cloud, we could still see temperatures in North Yorkshire

:25:53. > :25:57.reaching 21 Celsius through the afternoon. It is this littld weather

:25:58. > :26:01.system that brings us cloudher skies tomorrow and that patchy rahn. That

:26:02. > :26:05.front slowly edges away south and that patchy rain. That front slowly

:26:06. > :26:12.edges away second a while to clear up on Saturday. Then, high`pressure

:26:13. > :26:16.starts to dominate again. Notice the winds are coming from a northerly

:26:17. > :26:21.direction by the end of the weekend so things will turn a bit cooler. If

:26:22. > :26:23.you are out and about over the next few days, tomorrow, cloudy skies

:26:24. > :26:34.with outbreaks of rain. On Saturday, becoming drier from the North. It

:26:35. > :26:38.will be a slow brightening tp as we had through Saturday. Sundax looks

:26:39. > :26:42.mostly dry and reasonably bright as well. Where the sun does cole out,

:26:43. > :26:45.we could hit 20 Celsius but where we keep a bit of cloud in the dast

:26:46. > :26:55.temperatures more like the mid`teens. It's a similar phcture

:26:56. > :26:59.for Monday as well. That is the way weather is looking. We will keep you

:27:00. > :27:03.up`to`date on your BBC local radio station or you can check out the BBC

:27:04. > :27:09.weather app and get a forec`st wherever you are on the movd.

:27:10. > :27:14.Tomorrow, we will be reporthng on the progress of the Commonwdalth
