:00:21. > :00:23.as it agrees a three`year ddal to run the West Coast franchisd.

:00:24. > :00:25.The former Newcastle United skipper speaks exclusively

:00:26. > :00:29.about the shock of discoverhng he had cancer for the second thme.

:00:30. > :00:31.And a treasure trove goes under the hammer.

:00:32. > :00:33.A charity auction for the possessions Metro p`ssengers

:00:34. > :00:46.And we will be live with thd England fans ahead of their crucial class

:00:47. > :00:59.tonight against Uruguay. `` clash. He murdered his lover and then spent

:01:00. > :01:02.her money on his lavish lifdstyle. Tonight, killer Don Graham has

:01:03. > :01:05.finally been brought to justice nine years after the woman he'd

:01:06. > :01:07.claimed to love vanished. Janet Brown,

:01:08. > :01:09.from Hexham in Northumberland, had planned a holiday with Graham,

:01:10. > :01:12.but was never seen again. Yet, one mystery remains,

:01:13. > :01:15.because the police still have no Our correspondent Peter Harris

:01:16. > :01:23.reports. It was the murder case without

:01:24. > :01:25.a body. Janet Brown booked a holidax to

:01:26. > :01:27.France with her lover and then Today

:01:28. > :01:38.a jury decided he murdered Janet, hid the body ` the motive...her

:01:39. > :01:42.money. Don Graham went

:01:43. > :01:44.on to spend hundreds of thotsands of pounds of Janet's money `nd in

:01:45. > :01:48.the years that followed, he fleeced They had continued to believe that

:01:49. > :01:52.their daughter was still alhve They believed that because Graham

:01:53. > :02:01.took trips across the Channdl and sent them postcards,

:02:02. > :02:03.purportedly from Janet. It was all a lie. Graham kept

:02:04. > :02:19.spending, indulging a taste Years later a search

:02:20. > :02:25.for her body began at Spartx Lea, As the fraud on the Brown's family

:02:26. > :02:31.bank account came to light, archaeologists and the National

:02:32. > :02:34.Crime Squad were brought in. This has been a long`running,

:02:35. > :02:43.complex investigation with lany Not least that Graham has ndver

:02:44. > :02:51.told us where Janet's body hs. The final piece

:02:52. > :02:54.of the jigsaw would be for Graham to tell us what happened to Janet so

:02:55. > :02:58.that her family can finally have the He is extremely devious

:02:59. > :03:05.and he has managed to control, particularly women,

:03:06. > :03:14.in order to succeed in his crime. By the time Janet vanished,

:03:15. > :03:17.he had fallen in love with `nother woman, Elizabeth Todd,

:03:18. > :03:22.here on the right on the phone. She was accused in taking p`rt

:03:23. > :03:25.in the fraud and perverting The jury failed to reach

:03:26. > :03:29.a verdict on her. As for Don Graham,

:03:30. > :03:35.the police say he is a manipulative bully, especially towards women

:03:36. > :03:42.and he will be sentenced tolorrow. Peter, a murder conviction,

:03:43. > :03:46.but no body. Is the case closed,

:03:47. > :03:58.or are police still looking And, it is difficult becausd Janet

:03:59. > :04:03.went missing in 2005. It was another four years before this becale

:04:04. > :04:08.suspicious, not least because Don Graham had called the familx that he

:04:09. > :04:13.had started this new life in France. The police have no obvious leads as

:04:14. > :04:18.to where the body of Janet Dllis. Don Graham is the only man who knows

:04:19. > :04:22.because he counter and that is why the police are appealing to Don

:04:23. > :04:27.Graham to come clean and give the family of Janet Brown some closure.

:04:28. > :04:30.Virgin Trains is promising improvements to the West Co`st line,

:04:31. > :04:32.after being granted an extension to run the service

:04:33. > :04:35.The company says it'll invest ? 5 million and promises thousands more

:04:36. > :04:38.seats, free Wi`Fi, and improved parking at Carlisle.

:04:39. > :04:41.Virgin had previously lost out to FirstGroup in the battle

:04:42. > :04:45.for the 13`year franchise, but that was cancelled by the

:04:46. > :04:47.Department for Transport, bdcause of errors in the bidding process.

:04:48. > :04:51.Errors which it's claimed h`ve cost the taxpayer ?50 million.

:04:52. > :04:58.Two years ago the franchise process descended

:04:59. > :05:02.into farce when the Departmdnt for Transport awarded the 13`year

:05:03. > :05:06.franchise to FirstGroup then found out it had got its figures wrong.

:05:07. > :05:08.Today's announcement extends Virgin's contract to the Spring

:05:09. > :05:23.We would very much like to continue running this beyond 2017, wd believe

:05:24. > :05:28.we have done a good job and we have done this franchise around. We want

:05:29. > :05:34.to continue running it but ht will depend deterrence that the

:05:35. > :05:39.government puts up for revidw. `` the Terence. `` the Terence.

:05:40. > :05:41.Rail unions have said the whole franchise process needs to

:05:42. > :05:44.be scrapped and the line renationalised.

:05:45. > :05:51.Lots of money has been wastdd. In terms of what it costs, let us have

:05:52. > :05:54.a debate instead of listening to the buzzwords.

:05:55. > :05:56.Over the last year, 85% of its trains were

:05:57. > :06:03.So what does the public think of the extension to Virgin's contract?

:06:04. > :06:11.It is probably good, but thdy could do with some improvements. @

:06:12. > :06:18.friendly service on board and reasonable prices. Generallx very

:06:19. > :06:21.good and on time. If you do not put a seat it can be overcrowded and you

:06:22. > :06:24.do not get a safe space. FirstGroup `

:06:25. > :06:26.the company which originallx won then lost the 13`year contr`ct `

:06:27. > :06:29.has said that it won't rule out taking part in the franchisd process

:06:30. > :06:32.when the current extension dnds Until then Virgin has pledgdd to

:06:33. > :06:36.provide an extra 5,500 standard class seats, while investing

:06:37. > :06:46.?20million to modernise stations I think some of the things that have

:06:47. > :06:51.been promised as improvements are things that are essential, things to

:06:52. > :06:55.do with the seating, increasing the number of seats in standing class is

:06:56. > :06:59.very good news. The concern that we have is that appears to be `t the

:07:00. > :07:05.sense of some of the first`class seats, that may sound decaddnt, it

:07:06. > :07:10.is not. We cater for a lot of businesses and the PE premitm for

:07:11. > :07:16.those seats. We need them to do so. This is not a franchise, thhs is an

:07:17. > :07:18.extension of the existing operators who continue to 2016 when it will be

:07:19. > :07:21.more competition. The Government has dismissed claims

:07:22. > :07:24.that it's flying in the facd of its competition philosophy

:07:25. > :07:26.by delaying the franchise, insisting this was a good ddal

:07:27. > :07:28.for passengers and taxpayers. Adam Powell, for BBC Look North

:07:29. > :07:35.Carlisle. A man's been convicted of mtrdering

:07:36. > :07:38.his friend ` in a row over drugs and money ` at a house in Carlisle, last

:07:39. > :07:43.July. A jury at Carlisle Crown Court found 21`year`old Jamie Armstrong

:07:44. > :07:49.guilty of stabbing 23`year`old Luke Hollingsworth, in the Stanwhx area

:07:50. > :07:52.of the city. Armstrong denidd Police are looking at CCTV footage

:07:53. > :08:00.to try to discover how a five`year`old girl from County

:08:01. > :08:02.Durham came to drown in a swimming pool at a holiday resort in Cyprus.

:08:03. > :08:05.It's understood the incident happened on the day she and her

:08:06. > :08:08.family had arrived for a wedk's holiday in Protaras. A spokdsman for

:08:09. > :08:11.the Foreign and Commonwealth Office said it's providing consular

:08:12. > :08:17.assistance to the family. Two young women patients `

:08:18. > :08:20.on an eating disorder ward, threatened with closure `

:08:21. > :08:22.are taking their health trust They say the decision to close

:08:23. > :08:27.the unit at the Royal Victoria Infirmary in Newcastle is

:08:28. > :08:30."unlawful", claiming there's been "inadequate" consultation whth

:08:31. > :08:33.patients and their families. Only one inpatient eating dhsorder

:08:34. > :08:37.unit will remain in the North East ` And if the beds there are ftll,

:08:38. > :08:52.patients can be sent to Yorkshire Eating disorders are mental

:08:53. > :08:57.illnesses, but they have life`threatening physical

:08:58. > :09:00.consequences. A ten bed ward at this unit is award`winning and hdr save

:09:01. > :09:06.lives. It is being closed in favour of the regional unit in Darlington.

:09:07. > :09:10.Patients are taking action to try to halt the closure. The best outcome

:09:11. > :09:14.as far as the digital review is concerned is that the court should

:09:15. > :09:19.declare that the decision to close the war is unlawful over lack of

:09:20. > :09:24.consultation and public involvement. We should look at the notes and go

:09:25. > :09:28.back to the drawing board. Despite this legal challenge to the closure,

:09:29. > :09:32.there is a political challenge, a local NT has won an adjournlent

:09:33. > :09:38.debate in the House of Lords on Monday and that will have to be

:09:39. > :09:41.responded to by Health Minister I want the Minister to acknowledge

:09:42. > :09:44.this is the incorrect outcole for the people of Newcastle and the

:09:45. > :09:49.north`east and for sufferers of mental health, I want that lessage

:09:50. > :09:53.to get through to NHS England who has conducted this commissioning

:09:54. > :09:58.process without enough constltation and should understand what the

:09:59. > :10:00.impact is. The mental health trust says an intensive outpatient service

:10:01. > :10:07.will provide an adequate replacement. What we believd is that

:10:08. > :10:10.what the plans we have will go a long way to reducing the stress

:10:11. > :10:15.people are currently going through without having the intensivd service

:10:16. > :10:21.delivered to the Newcastle `rea For serious ill young women who have

:10:22. > :10:25.brought this action forward of an inflexible NHS, there is only one in

:10:26. > :10:31.patient their region and th`t is in Darlington. They may ever ydt save

:10:32. > :10:33.this unit is the legal action is successful and that will be going to

:10:34. > :10:36.a High Court judge. The jury `

:10:37. > :10:38.at an inquest in Scarborough, to find out how two young fhshermen

:10:39. > :10:42.died ` has returned a verdict Mark Arries, who was 26, and

:10:43. > :10:45.21`year`old Edward Ide, werd found dead in their bunks on board the

:10:46. > :10:48.fishing vessel "Eshcol" in January A pathologist said

:10:49. > :10:53.the pair died from carbon monoxide The coroner has recommended that

:10:54. > :10:58.carbon monoxide alarms should be made mandatory

:10:59. > :11:03.on all fishing vessels. Police have renewed their appeal

:11:04. > :11:04.for information about a woman who went misshng

:11:05. > :11:07.in Northumberland six months ago. 65`year`old Janis Hall was reported

:11:08. > :11:10.missing from her home in Catton Since then a number of searches

:11:11. > :11:16.have been carried out, but there've Police say her disappearancd

:11:17. > :11:23.is out of character. It's a form of cancer more common

:11:24. > :11:26.in the North East than anywhere And one of the region's most famous

:11:27. > :11:30.footballers has been telling Look Bob Moncur's career included

:11:31. > :11:35.captaining Newcastle United's Fairs Cup`winning

:11:36. > :11:38.team, a feat that earned hil He also skippered

:11:39. > :11:42.Sunderland to promotion. But for him, beating cancer

:11:43. > :11:46.probably tops all that. He's now recovering

:11:47. > :11:48.from an 8`hour operation to remove He spoke exclusively to our

:11:49. > :12:04.health reporter, Sharon Barbour Bob Moncur has faced a lot of

:12:05. > :12:08.challenges. As a footballer he captains Newcastle United, Scotland

:12:09. > :12:13.and Sunderland. He played and managed car they'll and bec`me the

:12:14. > :12:25.manager of Hartlepool United and wept maybe. `` Whitley Bay. This

:12:26. > :12:32.year he has had his toughest battle. He spoke to me and said that your

:12:33. > :12:40.dad will go through a Johnnx and that is a big one `` journex. He

:12:41. > :12:45.almost ignored me quote did not want to face that. Bobby Moncur's Johnny

:12:46. > :12:52.began when he was diagnosed with bowel cancer in 2007.

:12:53. > :12:58.Fortunately I had my wife bdside me. He was successfully treated and the

:12:59. > :13:02.surgeons at Gateshead hospital noticed something else, changes to

:13:03. > :13:05.the waning of his food pipe, a condition called Barrett's

:13:06. > :13:14.oesophagus and that could ldad to cancer. He was sent to Newc`stle's

:13:15. > :13:21.Royal in Tory `` Royal Victoria Infirmary, and then came thd phone

:13:22. > :13:30.call. I was told that the professor wanted to see me and I knew that was

:13:31. > :13:35.not good news. Is that especially for me, the red and white the?

:13:36. > :13:44.Cancer cells had developed `nd Bob would need a massive eight`hour

:13:45. > :13:47.operation to remove them. Bob was fortunate and Natalie picked this up

:13:48. > :13:52.just as it developed into a cancer. Because of that, we were able to

:13:53. > :13:59.consider him for an operation to remove the affected area whhch has

:14:00. > :14:03.been perfected over quite a large number of centimetres. We took all

:14:04. > :14:08.of that vote, a huge operathon. After the operation, he told me by

:14:09. > :14:14.the way, I discovered this `nd this other thing. As classic lind was

:14:15. > :14:22.another thing I need to tell you, and I thought what else is coming!

:14:23. > :14:28.He said, you know how they say that you are black and white all the way

:14:29. > :14:32.through, he said, you are not, you are at and wake, and then hd walked

:14:33. > :14:37.out of the door. The north`dast of England has one of the highdst

:14:38. > :14:43.incidence of obesity and thd United Kingdom and around the world. If we

:14:44. > :14:49.have a high sense of obesitx, we will have higher reflux and that

:14:50. > :14:56.means we will have a change and the waning of the spot `` oesophagus and

:14:57. > :15:01.that gives rise to cancer and that is why in the North East of England

:15:02. > :15:05.we had such high incidence of this type of cancer. Bobby Moncur is now

:15:06. > :15:08.recovering well and it could be said that he is one of the fortunate ones

:15:09. > :15:15.to have his cancer detected before it spread. I know I am luckx, I have

:15:16. > :15:20.had cancer twice but I was `lways treated by the rich people. It was

:15:21. > :15:23.found early enough. Does it mean to reflect upon how things havd gone in

:15:24. > :15:31.your life and where you go from here? I am very positive and I think

:15:32. > :15:35.that I am very lucky. Great to see Bobby Moncur looking so well. The

:15:36. > :15:39.north`east has the highest rate of this cancer and the world, why is

:15:40. > :15:45.that the case? We heard that Professor Mike Griffin speaking

:15:46. > :15:52.their as to what he believes other reasons. Smoking and drinking are

:15:53. > :15:59.big contributors. You are ehght times more link `` more likdly to

:16:00. > :16:06.develop that sort of cancer if you drink and eat heavily. What should

:16:07. > :16:09.the rest of us look out for? The thing that happened with Bob was

:16:10. > :16:17.that he had a lot of heartbtrn and indigestion and that has

:16:18. > :16:20.contributed. That can be worrying because what happens is that the

:16:21. > :16:25.ballots may have hardly changed and the lining which could change that

:16:26. > :16:31.heartburn. That is an early symptom that can be done to a waiter symptom

:16:32. > :16:35.that could be difficulty in swallowing and that could bd because

:16:36. > :16:40.the tumour has developed. Wd spoke to victory last year, you m`y

:16:41. > :16:41.remember, she developed a ttmour and we got up with her and she hs now

:16:42. > :16:55.doing very well. We have a technical problem, but I

:16:56. > :17:01.can tell you that Victoria has had major surgery to remove that tumour

:17:02. > :17:05.and is doing very well. Thank you very much for that, Sharon.

:17:06. > :17:07.It was a charity auction with a difference.

:17:08. > :17:10.The items up for grabs had `ll been left unclaimed by passengers

:17:11. > :17:13.on the Tyne and Wear Metro system over the last few years.

:17:14. > :17:17.And you might be surprised by what people leave behind.

:17:18. > :17:20.In true Generation Game style, here's a sample of some of the lots:

:17:21. > :17:23.a snooker cue, a set of bunk bed ladders, ` pair

:17:24. > :17:26.of glasses, a cuddly toy, a guitar, a pair of crutches, and a foot spa.

:17:27. > :17:37.Stephanie Cleasby reports from Sunderland.

:17:38. > :17:45.What about the poems, who w`nts to start before ?1? Most of us could be

:17:46. > :17:50.forgiven for believing an ulbrella on a train but there are far

:17:51. > :17:56.stranger items left by forgdtful travellers on the Metro. Christmas

:17:57. > :18:01.decorations, a set of bunk bed ladders and even people go stick,

:18:02. > :18:07.the keen bargain hunters ard out in force this morning. I thought it

:18:08. > :18:14.would be a bit of fun to have a look and see what is available. H noticed

:18:15. > :18:18.the crutches and they were not selling, they will be a bit of fun

:18:19. > :18:24.for my netball team! It is good for a broken ankle! It was five years

:18:25. > :18:30.ago that the last auction w`s held, so there is a real treasure trove

:18:31. > :18:36.that has built up. We have returned 15 sets of crutches to the hospital

:18:37. > :18:41.already. We had a blind stick from a man in Australia who we are trying

:18:42. > :18:54.to trace to send it back to him We had one wheelchair, sex babx

:18:55. > :18:58.buggies. `` six. All proceeds from the auction will be donated to

:18:59. > :19:06.charity. Some things will ndver sell in this city. I wonder who got the

:19:07. > :19:14.cuddly Now if you're watching us tonight,

:19:15. > :19:16.it's a fair bet you just can't do without

:19:17. > :19:19.your nightly fix of Look North. Because England's crucial World Cup

:19:20. > :19:23.game against Uruguay kicks off More than 15 million people watched

:19:24. > :19:27.the team's last game against Italy. Defeat

:19:28. > :19:29.by Uruguay tonight could sed England following current World Cup holders

:19:30. > :19:31.Spain out of the competition. And as the tension mounts,

:19:32. > :19:48.Dawn Thewlis has found a prdtty We are not at the favela in real did

:19:49. > :19:53.you knew all you may not believe that! All these people are hoping to

:19:54. > :20:02.be celebrating later tonight. `` Rio de Janeiro. England's play Truguay

:20:03. > :20:09.tonight. Both sides lost thdir first games but whilst it is not ` must

:20:10. > :20:13.win game both teams must not lose. I went into Sunderland later today to

:20:14. > :20:27.find out more. This reverend spent most of last

:20:28. > :20:32.season praying that the Gus Poyet's Sunderland would stay in thd Premier

:20:33. > :20:35.League. Tonight he is backing England's but his wife is from

:20:36. > :20:41.Uruguay and they will be sitting at the opposite ends of the sofa, it

:20:42. > :20:46.could create a bit of tension! It always creates hassle and the

:20:47. > :20:53.household when these types of games, long. Hopefully we will be OK. As

:20:54. > :20:59.long as both teams play well and no one baits anyone, it will all be OK.

:21:00. > :21:07.That is shocking, that was ` one`off from Luis Suarez. Luis Suardz will

:21:08. > :21:14.be very important, while he not Absolutely, he is only one of the

:21:15. > :21:21.team but he is very important. People say that Uruguay lost the

:21:22. > :21:26.first game because they havd been denied the special spread that they

:21:27. > :21:31.eat back home. Yes, it is a very delicious bread, the type of thing

:21:32. > :21:36.you put on your apple pie. H do not think it would influence thd game

:21:37. > :21:39.that much. You remain in thd minority because both of yotr own

:21:40. > :21:46.daughters are supporting Urtguay as well. They have got to tastd defeat

:21:47. > :21:52.at some point and the young lives. I believe England will be victorious

:21:53. > :21:59.3`1. I think we will astound people tomorrow. Do you have any words of

:22:00. > :22:11.encouragement for Uruguay? What did you just say? It means, or `n

:22:12. > :22:14.Uruguay! `` come on Uruguay The man who has organised this partx is

:22:15. > :22:24.called Charlie, what a fant`stic event. Yes, the sun is shinhng. What

:22:25. > :22:30.is the idea behind it? We h`ve a large space year and we dechded to
