0:00:14 > 0:00:15in a Newcastle street.

0:00:15 > 0:00:18It happened very early yesterday morning, just after midnight

0:00:18 > 0:00:19on Westmorland Road.

0:00:19 > 0:00:23Police enquiries suggest there may have been a disturbance

0:00:23 > 0:00:25before a firearm was shot.

0:00:25 > 0:00:26It's understood no one was hurt

0:00:26 > 0:00:29A 27`year`old man has been `rrested.

0:00:29 > 0:00:31Firefighters in York had to rescue two men from

0:00:31 > 0:00:33the River Foss during the night.

0:00:33 > 0:00:37The father and son, aged around 50 and 30, were pulled from thd water `

0:00:37 > 0:00:40close to Castle car park.

0:00:40 > 0:00:42Paramedics and the police wdre at the scene.

0:00:42 > 0:00:44The rescue services say both were lucky to escape

0:00:44 > 0:00:48without serious injury.

0:00:48 > 0:00:51Police say they're "very concerned" for the safety of a woman who's

0:00:51 > 0:00:55gone missing and who has links with North Tyneside and Northumberland.

0:00:55 > 0:00:5846`year`old Linda Foulkes, who's originally from Gosforth,

0:00:58 > 0:01:03went missing in Bury last Thursday, but police believe she may be

0:01:03 > 0:01:06visiting Wallington Hall or Belsay in Northumberland, or the

0:01:06 > 0:01:09Whitley Bay area of North Tyneside.

0:01:09 > 0:01:10They're very concerned for her safety

0:01:10 > 0:01:25and are urging anyone who sees her to contact them immediately.

0:01:25 > 0:01:27Political figures in the region have clashed over

0:01:27 > 0:01:29the continuing strikes in the public sector.

0:01:29 > 0:01:31Council staff joined firefighters and teachers in taking strike action

0:01:31 > 0:01:33last week over pay and penshons

0:01:33 > 0:01:35Labour's candidate in Redcar, Anna Turley, told the BBC's Sunday

0:01:35 > 0:01:37Politics that she supported the action people were taking.

0:01:37 > 0:01:39We are talking about dinner ladies, firemen, teaching assistants.

0:01:39 > 0:01:42These are people doing their best to earn a living and they

0:01:42 > 0:01:45have had to put up with for years of redundancies, restructures, low

0:01:45 > 0:01:48pay and their wages being frozen, and they have a right to withdraw

0:01:48 > 0:01:51their labour to make a point.

0:01:51 > 0:01:54But Conservative former minister Timothy Kirkhope, the MEP for

0:01:54 > 0:01:57Yorkshire, condemned the strikes, which he said caused disruption

0:01:57 > 0:02:01for many people who relied upon local services and schools.

0:02:01 > 0:02:05I think there are an awful lot of small businessmen, individuals,

0:02:05 > 0:02:11other people on fixed incomes and so on, who are continuing to

0:02:11 > 0:02:14work and to contribute, and I think to withdraw services

0:02:14 > 0:02:17in this way is not responsible.

0:02:17 > 0:02:20It's been hailed as a success for community spirit.

0:02:20 > 0:02:23Today, the Friends of Redcar celebrated a final victory hn

0:02:23 > 0:02:27their long`running campaign to have tons of unsightly rubble removed

0:02:27 > 0:02:30from the beach near their homes.

0:02:30 > 0:02:33And they launched a "clean`up party" to celebrate today.

0:02:33 > 0:02:35Martin Forster reports.

0:02:35 > 0:02:38It takes commitment to spend your Sunday morning cleaning rubble

0:02:38 > 0:02:41off the beach on the rain, but still they came.

0:02:41 > 0:02:46When Redcar's new ?25 million sea wall was completed last year,

0:02:46 > 0:02:48some local people complained that large chunks of rubble

0:02:48 > 0:02:52and building materials had been left behind on the sand.

0:02:52 > 0:02:58Just trying to remove this ceiling.

0:02:58 > 0:03:03We can't remove it, so hopefully the Environment Agency

0:03:03 > 0:03:04will get it moved.

0:03:04 > 0:03:07And so they have become a regular sight on Redcar sda front,

0:03:07 > 0:03:11local people spending their free time cleaning up the beach.

0:03:11 > 0:03:13There is loads of rubble.

0:03:13 > 0:03:16There's anything you can thhnk of.

0:03:16 > 0:03:18People just don't take it up.

0:03:18 > 0:03:20It doesn't represent Redcar.

0:03:20 > 0:03:23It is a lovely place.

0:03:23 > 0:03:26It would be so nice that in some bypassing Redcar and heading

0:03:26 > 0:03:27to Whitby, they came to Redcar.

0:03:27 > 0:03:30But now a victory.

0:03:30 > 0:03:32The Environment Agency has `greed to spend three days next week, clearing

0:03:32 > 0:03:37away any remaining debris in the area around Redcar's se` wall.

0:03:37 > 0:03:39We have been all over social media.

0:03:39 > 0:03:43We have been in the press as well.

0:03:43 > 0:03:48Everybody was excited to be able to say we actually managed to do

0:03:48 > 0:03:55something here, perhaps the authorities couldn't.

0:03:58 > 0:04:00Hundreds of people from across our region have completed

0:04:00 > 0:04:03a 24`hour relay to raise money for cancer research.

0:04:03 > 0:04:06Most of those taking part in the Relay for Life at Jarrow's Lonkton

0:04:06 > 0:04:10Stadium were either survivors of cancer, were carers, or those who'd

0:04:10 > 0:04:12lost loved ones to the disease.

0:04:12 > 0:04:15They set off shortly before lunch yesterday ` finishing

0:04:15 > 0:04:27at 11am this morning, raising thousands for Cancer Research UK.

0:04:27 > 0:04:27I'm delighted.

0:04:27 > 0:04:30It is probably the best turnout we have evdr had.

0:04:30 > 0:04:33The weather makes a huge difference, but we had 740 people signed up

0:04:33 > 0:04:35so I knew it was going to be big.

0:04:35 > 0:04:38The sun has brought all the visitors out as well.

0:04:38 > 0:04:40Cricket, and Durham are back in County Championship action, whilst

0:04:40 > 0:04:41Yorkshire are playing Twenty20.

0:04:41 > 0:04:43The Riversiders are playing Warwickshire at Chester`le`Street

0:04:43 > 0:04:45and after a late start ` because of the rain `

0:04:45 > 0:04:47finally put Warwickshire in to bat.

0:04:47 > 0:04:48They're struggling to take wickets though,

0:04:48 > 0:04:50Warwickshire currently 124 ? 2.

0:04:50 > 0:04:54Meanwhile, in the Nat West Blast Twenty20, Yorkshire were up

0:04:54 > 0:04:56against Derbyshire at Chesterfield.

0:04:56 > 0:04:59The Tykes made 183`4 and then bowled out Derbyshhre

0:04:59 > 0:05:03for just 124 to secure an e`sy win.

0:05:04 > 0:05:07And after a rather dank and drizzly day here in Newcastle, it's time to

0:05:07 > 0:05:09take a look at tonight's weather prospects across the region.

0:05:09 > 0:05:11With all the details, here's Kawser Quaymer.

0:05:11 > 0:05:11Good evening.

0:05:11 > 0:05:14We have had a good deal of sunshine but showers tod`y.

0:05:14 > 0:05:16Those showers continue in the east as we head through

0:05:16 > 0:05:19the night, perhaps one or two heavy bursts, but becoming drier

0:05:19 > 0:05:22and we're looking at clearer skies, especially towards the west.

0:05:22 > 0:05:24This will allow temperatures to fall in rural spots

0:05:24 > 0:05:25down to single figures.

0:05:25 > 0:05:27But in the east, hanging onto those double figures, but ldss

0:05:27 > 0:05:31humid than it has been and a more comfortable night to sleep hn.

0:05:31 > 0:05:33Tomorrow there is plenty of dry and bright weather,

0:05:33 > 0:05:35with lots of sunshine in store, especially towards the east.

0:05:35 > 0:05:39Then we will start to see some cloud pushing in from the west with some

0:05:39 > 0:05:40patchy outbreaks of rain for a time.

0:05:40 > 0:05:41But still feeling warm.

0:05:41 > 0:05:44Temperatures around 20 to 21 degrees, perhaps

0:05:44 > 0:05:48a bit warmer in the east this time with plenty of dry weather here

0:05:48 > 0:05:51That's it for now, we're back to start the week `
