:00:08. > :00:09.Hello and welcome to Thursday's Look North.

:00:10. > :00:11.Claims that an independent Scotland could cost the North thousands

:00:12. > :00:14.of jobs and millions of pounds in lost trade.

:00:15. > :00:16.An investigation's launched after a pensioner is attackdd

:00:17. > :00:23.Traders in this town say delays in carrying out roadworks are

:00:24. > :00:28.Flight of honour ` the North's tribute to

:00:29. > :00:33.the birds dubbed the 'flying soldiers' of the two World Wars

:00:34. > :00:36.And what now for the yellow bikes and bunting, after le Grand Depart

:00:37. > :00:42.In sport, we say hello to a trio of Sunderland's summer signhngs

:00:43. > :00:44.And bonjour to Newcastle's new striker who's swapped Monaco

:00:45. > :01:04.An independent Scotland would cost Cumbria and the North of England

:01:05. > :01:07.thousands of jobs and millions of pounds in lost trade every year.

:01:08. > :01:11.That's the claim made by thd Labour Party today as it opdned

:01:12. > :01:14.a new front in its battle to stop Scotland breaking away from the UK.

:01:15. > :01:19.The Stronger Together campahgn has published a report saying trade

:01:20. > :01:23.But those figures have been described as 'nonsense'

:01:24. > :01:26.by those who want a Yes votd in September's referendum.

:01:27. > :01:33.At this steel fabrication btsiness north of Carlisle in Lockerbie,

:01:34. > :01:37.workers come from both sides of the border and even further afield.

:01:38. > :01:40.In just 16 years, the familx owned firm has grown to become ond

:01:41. > :01:45.Its founder is firmly opposdd to the idea of Scotland

:01:46. > :01:57.To a lot of customers abroad, they don't understand why we would want

:01:58. > :02:04.to move away from a union that has worked well for everybody. There are

:02:05. > :02:05.obviously issues to address but in my estimation, we are better

:02:06. > :02:07.together. And it was one port

:02:08. > :02:10.of call today for the shadow Scottish secretary campaignhng

:02:11. > :02:21.around the region as the vote on It's best to look at what wd have in

:02:22. > :02:27.common and to create solutions. I think Scots and people in the North

:02:28. > :02:44.of England can work together. If we divide, that damages as. Cldar

:02:45. > :02:46.by 44% and this report says that by 44% and this report says that

:02:47. > :02:47.would happen in this case to. Richard Arkless,

:02:48. > :02:49.a Scot who's lived across the UK, has come back to set up in business

:02:50. > :02:52.and is adamant an independent Scotland would improve forttnes

:02:53. > :03:04.for both sides of the border. Border tariffs are controls has this

:03:05. > :03:09.report says is not in their interests of companies on the

:03:10. > :03:12.English side of the border or the Scottish side. That is what will

:03:13. > :03:14.determine the policy. Commercial sense.

:03:15. > :03:18.Back at Process Plant and M`chinery, opinions are mixed.

:03:19. > :03:24.I think it will concern us hf we have to change from the pound and a

:03:25. > :03:33.thorough going to be border controls or whatever. Lots of differdnt

:03:34. > :03:39.things. Culture and languagd is different, so I think we should stay

:03:40. > :03:42.together... Separate. The arguments will only get louder

:03:43. > :03:45.with just nine weeks to go Mark, these huge figures

:03:46. > :03:49.have been bandied around. What evidence are the

:03:50. > :03:51.Stronger Together campaign drawing This is the report that

:03:52. > :03:56.the party has produced. It says this is based on Trdasury

:03:57. > :03:59.figures and in the worst case scenario shows

:04:00. > :04:02.that trade from Scotland to England would fall by 83% over 30 ydars

:04:03. > :04:07.and that trade flowing north Those who are campaigning

:04:08. > :04:27.for a yes vote disagree. They say the figures are out of date

:04:28. > :04:31.which makes the claims embarrassing. With the vote in nine weeks, we will

:04:32. > :04:38.find out which argument has been most persuasive.

:04:39. > :04:41.An investigation's underway tonight after a pensioner was attacked

:04:42. > :04:48.The 73`year`old is in hospital, after being mauled when the dog

:04:49. > :04:51.came into the kitchen of her home after she'd invited officers into

:04:52. > :04:55.Cleveland Police say the dog has been removed from duty.

:04:56. > :05:01.Our correspondent Peter Harris is at the Middlesbrough Police HQ now.

:05:02. > :05:12.Police say they had stopped a car nearby as part of the drugs

:05:13. > :05:19.operation and a man ran awax from it. They set off after him. At some

:05:20. > :05:25.point it seems he went into the gardens on this road. They go into

:05:26. > :05:28.one with a mission to look for him and unfortunately, the Germ`n

:05:29. > :05:32.Shepherd police dog has found its way into the kitchen of a

:05:33. > :05:46.73`year`old resident who is then written. `` bitten. The dog had

:05:47. > :05:57.apparently jumped on her. I can see through her window. Ambulances came

:05:58. > :06:09.and the two car. She looked very fragile. It is shocking, shd is a

:06:10. > :06:16.lovely woman, very private. Any word on how she is? She is quite fragile.

:06:17. > :06:26.Her condition is described `s poorly. She has baked winds to her

:06:27. > :06:32.body. `` bite. The dog has been taken out of work well the situation

:06:33. > :06:39.has assessed. Details have been passed to the Independent police

:06:40. > :06:42.commission. Need equally regret what has happened.

:06:43. > :06:46.Police in Sunderland are appealing for the

:06:47. > :06:49.public's help as they try to trace a 57`year`old man who's disappeared.

:06:50. > :06:51.Concern's been mounting for Robert Hutchinson, who's bedn

:06:52. > :06:54.Two men have been arrested on suspicion of murder,

:06:55. > :07:00.but the whereabouts of Mr Httchinson remains a complete mystery.

:07:01. > :07:02.Jim Knight reports. Robert Hutchinson's been missing now

:07:03. > :07:06.Police describe him as a devoted family man who

:07:07. > :07:10.called`in on his daughter and granddaughter every day.

:07:11. > :07:13.Detectives believe something happened to him on the night of June

:07:14. > :07:16.the 23rd, which should have been a normal Monday night for Robert.

:07:17. > :07:20.But Police are hoping someone might be able to throw new light on his

:07:21. > :07:28.movements that night One possibly significant sighting at 4:40pm

:07:29. > :07:41.Was he going to meet someond? Was he going to a destination?

:07:42. > :07:42.The Asda petrol station in Leechmere,

:07:43. > :07:47.where Robert was captured on CCTV filling up his blue Nissan Licra.

:07:48. > :07:56.It adds weight to the concerns around his well`being. He w`s a

:07:57. > :07:59.devoted family man. He left the house full of food and a car full of

:08:00. > :08:05.petrol. It is completely out of character.

:08:06. > :08:13.This is where his car was dhscovered between Chester Road and Stdwart

:08:14. > :08:18.Street. It was a blue car btt police think it was left here on Monday the

:08:19. > :08:19.23rd of June. They are appe`ling for anyone who saw anything suspicious

:08:20. > :08:20.to come forward. Tonight, two men remain in Police

:08:21. > :08:23.custody on suspicion of murder. And with each passing day,

:08:24. > :08:25.the concern for Robert Hutchinson A former Cumbrian MP has apologised

:08:26. > :08:35.to the House of Lords after breaking its rules

:08:36. > :08:37.by agreeing to lobby Parlialent An inquiry has ruled that

:08:38. > :08:41.David MacLean, now known as Lord Blencathr`,

:08:42. > :08:43.breached the Parliamentary code of conduct by signing

:08:44. > :08:46.a contract with the Cayman Hslands. It's reported his company w`s

:08:47. > :08:55.being paid ?12,000 pounds a month. Traders in a Cumbrian town say

:08:56. > :08:58.months of roadworks have sedn their They're furious that Main Street

:08:59. > :09:02.in Cockermouth is still closed to The council says it sympathhses with

:09:03. > :09:05.the traders, but it's come across some 'unforeseen problems'

:09:06. > :09:07.with utility pipes. The delay's put the project back

:09:08. > :09:09.by six weeks, It's been a tough few years

:09:10. > :09:15.for Catherine Hetherington. Her book shop was of many

:09:16. > :09:19.independent stores in Cockermouth And just as they struggled to keep

:09:20. > :09:28.their businesses alive during the clean up then, they feel

:09:29. > :09:40.a long`running set of roadworks is I think we all felt we put that

:09:41. > :09:44.behind us. As much as we kndw there was going to be work to be done at

:09:45. > :09:48.some stage on the roads, it was something we thought we could cope

:09:49. > :09:54.with. But this just really feels like a huge obstacle becausd it is

:09:55. > :10:01.greatly affecting our busindsses and living our lives, and the ptblic's

:10:02. > :10:03.enjoyment of the whole town. I have lost my patience.

:10:04. > :10:05.Cumbria County Council is carrying out the much`needed

:10:06. > :10:13.It blaming unexpected utility for a lack of progress.

:10:14. > :10:17.I think that people have bedn incredibly patient while thd

:10:18. > :10:22.roadworks have been going on and I think that we all have got to a

:10:23. > :10:29.stage where we are very affdcted by it. We are getting to the end of the

:10:30. > :10:34.project. We just wanted to be finished. The business is probably

:10:35. > :10:47.lost 33% of their income, which is huge considering the size of the

:10:48. > :10:51.town. The council says it is facing a four to six week delay me`ning

:10:52. > :10:57.completion could be put back until October. It is a typical town centre

:10:58. > :11:02.which is always going to be difficult. We do appreciate that

:11:03. > :11:07.we're going to have to as efficiently as we could do `nd there

:11:08. > :11:11.have been delays, but we're doing everything we can to reduce those.

:11:12. > :11:14.It is open for business in the meantime and I would encour`ge all

:11:15. > :11:18.your viewers to come to Cockermouth and shop as they would norm`lly

:11:19. > :11:21.The council says Main Street will open one way to traffic next week

:11:22. > :11:24.and it will do everything it can to make sure the upcoming T`ste

:11:25. > :11:31.New plans which will see 50`metre high pylons

:11:32. > :11:34.over parts of Cumbria have been unveiled by the National Grhd.

:11:35. > :11:37.The lines will carry electrhcity created at the planned Moorside

:11:38. > :11:40.nuclear power station near Sellafield.

:11:41. > :11:48.One line would head north vha Whitehaven and Carlisle with another

:11:49. > :11:50.going south to Barrow in Furness and under Morecambe Bay.

:11:51. > :11:54.It was thought the pylons m`y have had to go through the Lake District.

:11:55. > :11:56.But the new routes will still pass through areas of natural be`uty

:11:57. > :11:59.The Labour councillors responsible for the botched Lendal Bridge trial

:12:00. > :12:01.will formally face calls to resign, at tonight's meeting

:12:02. > :12:06.Council Leader James Alexander and Dave Merrett will both face

:12:07. > :12:09.a vote to decide whether they keep their jobs.

:12:10. > :12:12.The move's part of a Liberal Democrat motion which also

:12:13. > :12:15.calls for the 60,000 motorists fined for crossing Lendal Bridge to be

:12:16. > :12:18.repaid automatically without having to apply for a refund.

:12:19. > :12:20.So far, Labour's only said York Council will reimburse those

:12:21. > :12:28.Carol Downworth nearly died in a car crash in 2010.

:12:29. > :12:31.The mother`of`two lost control at the wheel and hit a stond wall,

:12:32. > :12:35.leaving her with a serious head injury.

:12:36. > :12:38.The former nurse was flown to the intensive care unit at James

:12:39. > :12:40.Cook Hospital in Middlesbrotgh, where she used to work.

:12:41. > :12:43.But now, four years on, she's rebuilt her life thanks to

:12:44. > :12:46.the Move into Sport programle at Durham Amateur Rowing Cltb.

:12:47. > :12:54.Carol's life was literally turned upside down

:12:55. > :13:10.The car overturned and hit ` wall so I was headfirst onto a stond wall. I

:13:11. > :13:15.have metal plates in my skull and ran my face. `` around my f`ce.

:13:16. > :13:17.Following the accident, both Carol and her husband Lick

:13:18. > :13:25.I had an option. I could sit on the couch and feel sorry for myself or

:13:26. > :13:30.try to do something. Luckilx my husband Mick is very encour`ging and

:13:31. > :13:35.we looked at something we could do together. Rowing came up as

:13:36. > :13:36.something very good for vistally impaired people because you don t

:13:37. > :13:39.have to see, you have to fedl. Despite now being registered blind

:13:40. > :13:40.and suffering from severe headaches and mdmory

:13:41. > :13:51.loss, Carol has rebuilt her life When I'm walking around, I `m very

:13:52. > :13:57.anxious and tense. People btmp into you and you knock over, I al always

:13:58. > :14:02.injuring myself. But on a boat, you can fall in but you don't worry

:14:03. > :14:15.about that. I actually relax more. It's a wonderful feeling. After

:14:16. > :14:20.taking a beginners course, she is now a passionate competitor. She is

:14:21. > :14:27.one assessment away from becoming a newly qualified coach. She has taken

:14:28. > :14:32.it up with determination and love. I am very proud of because shd is

:14:33. > :14:37.becoming a coach as well. She wants to give something back to rowing.

:14:38. > :14:43.She has made so much progress over the years she has been here. She has

:14:44. > :14:49.been doing a variety of reghonal and local competitions. As many as any

:14:50. > :14:54.other club member. She has `lready achieved so much but Carol still has

:14:55. > :15:02.plenty of goals on and off the water. I want to win more r`ces

:15:03. > :15:06.It's about breaking down barriers. Anyone can do it, you don't have to

:15:07. > :15:12.be young. You can be my age or older.

:15:13. > :15:13.You're watching Thursday's Look North.

:15:14. > :15:18.The Tour de France is long gone from the North

:15:19. > :15:24.but what should they do with all the yellow bikes and bunting?

:15:25. > :15:28.And there a weather warning in the forecast. I'll have all the details

:15:29. > :15:33.for the north`east and Cumbria. Now, we all know they race thousands

:15:34. > :15:36.of miles but how many of us are aware of the role racing

:15:37. > :15:39.pigeons played during the Fhrst Well, they were crucial in keeping

:15:40. > :15:43.open vital lines of communication. And now, pigeon fanciers from

:15:44. > :15:47.across the North East are preparing to remember their efforts

:15:48. > :15:49.in a special commemorative race The modern racing pigeon is lean

:15:50. > :15:53.and fast and can cost tens 100 years ago though, the v`lue

:15:54. > :16:01.of these birds was even gre`ter During the last two World W`rs,

:16:02. > :16:07.200,000 were used as a vital means of communication, with 32 even

:16:08. > :16:13.receiving medals for braverx. Today, the role they played

:16:14. > :16:19.during the war is still recognised by John Thompson,

:16:20. > :16:23.a pigeon fancier from Thorn`by. How big a role did these

:16:24. > :16:26.pigeons play in the World W`rs? As you can see in this picttre here,

:16:27. > :16:30.the Duke of Normandy, this pigeon here,

:16:31. > :16:33.was the first pigeon to get the word back about the D`Day landings

:16:34. > :16:37.during the Second World War. He cut across enemy lines to get

:16:38. > :16:39.the message back He was shot at by the Germans,

:16:40. > :16:44.so they done exceptionally well to To mark the role

:16:45. > :16:50.our feathered friends played during both wars, a special commemoration

:16:51. > :16:53.race is being held in Belgitm this weekend with 3000 pigeon fanciers

:16:54. > :16:57.from the North East releasing We are in the loft at the moment and

:16:58. > :17:06.these pigeons here are the ones that will be going to the race and flying

:17:07. > :17:12.for first prize, fingers crossed. My great grandad died in thd war so

:17:13. > :17:22.it means a lot to me and my family. Pigeons from the North East were

:17:23. > :17:28.sent down to the south shord To highlight

:17:29. > :17:30.their wartime achievements, the pigeons will take around seven hours

:17:31. > :17:34.to fly back to the North East. A different generation, perhaps now

:17:35. > :17:45.regarding them in a different light. They sprung up all over

:17:46. > :17:47.the place to welcome But what now

:17:48. > :17:54.for the yellow bikes and bunting? You've been decorating our Facebook

:17:55. > :17:56.pages with your ideas, with suggestions from a lasting lonument

:17:57. > :18:21.to a trip to the scrapyard. The paper the tour route, coming up

:18:22. > :18:30.here there and everywhere. But what now for the yellow bikes? This

:18:31. > :18:34.shopping Yorks giveaway hundreds of wrecks for people to paint `t the

:18:35. > :20:47.promised to bring them back. Shannon has plans for them. Meet thd man

:20:48. > :20:52.whose goals it is hoped will make Newcastle are forced to be reckoned

:20:53. > :21:04.with. Why has he left Monaco for Tyneside? It's a big club whth a big

:21:05. > :21:09.manager and a lot of fans. Ht's easy for me because some players are

:21:10. > :21:14.French, but I want to talk with English players to because H want to

:21:15. > :21:20.learn English fast to adapt with the team. He won't reveal his goals

:21:21. > :21:25.target, but he's determined to top the 14th he scored for Monaco last

:21:26. > :21:31.season. Quick and strong, hd's been likened by some to Thierry @udel

:21:32. > :21:45.Henry, who he would like to emulate. Thierry Henry is my idol. Hd is my

:21:46. > :21:50.hero. I am not him, but I w`nt to work to become like him. Next up, a

:21:51. > :21:56.pre`season tour of New Zeal`nd and plenty of packing.

:21:57. > :22:00.With Newcastle after New Ze`land soon, late this afternoon they

:22:01. > :22:05.finalised a deal for Netherlands World Cup star Al Janmaat after

:22:06. > :22:10.Mathieu Debuchy completed hhs move to Arsenal. The 24`year`old arrives

:22:11. > :22:17.from Feyenoord after an impressive summer in Brazil. The writeback has

:22:18. > :22:26.signed a six`year deal at St James' Park. The perfect step for le, the

:22:27. > :22:34.next step in my career. Amazing club, big club, big history. The

:22:35. > :22:39.fans are amazing, I like thd fans. For me it's a perfect step. You may

:22:40. > :22:43.remember that Sunderland signed a trio of players last month, but

:22:44. > :22:47.today they were introduced to the media. All three were signed on a

:22:48. > :22:53.free transfer and each is expecting to play a big role at the Stadium of

:22:54. > :22:57.Light next season. Three press conferences, three new

:22:58. > :23:03.signings. First up the biggdst, literally, at six, Costel

:23:04. > :23:08.Pantilimon, the tallest plaxer in the Premier League. Last se`son at

:23:09. > :23:13.Manchester City, the Romani`n goalkeeper kept Joe Hart out of the

:23:14. > :23:17.side for 18 matches, includhng the 1`0 defeat at the Stadium Of Light

:23:18. > :23:22.in November. But he knows hd's also got stiff competition for the

:23:23. > :23:28.goalkeeping jersey at his ndw club in the form of Vito Mannone. I to

:23:29. > :23:38.work hard, to fight for a place in the team. For the same thing I came

:23:39. > :23:42.here, with this mind, after I talked to the manager. We had a good

:23:43. > :23:48.discussion and he convinced me this is the right place. Next up, a Judy,

:23:49. > :23:54.Jordi Gomez. Signed on a frde from Championship side Wigan Athletic. He

:23:55. > :23:58.would appear well`suited to the possession based passing gale Gus

:23:59. > :24:05.Poyet is after at Sunderland. Everyone has been very good with me.

:24:06. > :24:11.I'm enjoying it, I'm happy to be here working with them. Hopdfully we

:24:12. > :24:16.can have a good season. And finally Billy Jones, a defender frol West

:24:17. > :24:21.Brom who has instant hero s`y this ` status because his only goal in the

:24:22. > :24:24.Premier League was against Newcastle 16 months ago. With Phil Bardsley

:24:25. > :24:31.gone, the writeback position seems to be his, but that's not how he

:24:32. > :24:35.sees it. I know the club ard working high ` hard behind`the`scends to

:24:36. > :24:39.bring in more players. Full`back is probably one of them. Having

:24:40. > :24:42.strength in depth is massivd for any team so I'm looking forward to the

:24:43. > :24:52.challenge of hopefully getthng Fisher to keep. ` getting the shirt
