:00:13. > :00:15.There's been an angry reaction in the region to the news that

:00:16. > :00:17.a breast cancer drug, trialled at Newcastle's Freeman Hospital,

:00:18. > :00:21.won't be routinely available on the NHS.

:00:22. > :00:23.The drug, Kadcyla, has offered extra months

:00:24. > :00:29.But it's been decided that it will cost the health service too much.

:00:30. > :00:31.One woman who's benefited from the drug says

:00:32. > :00:38.Our Political Editor, Richard Moss, reports.

:00:39. > :00:42.It looks insignificant but each dose of Kadcyla can be

:00:43. > :00:46.precious for patients with advanced breast cancer.

:00:47. > :00:48.Newcastle health care worker Michelle Robson's life has been

:00:49. > :00:52.transformed since she started taking it six months ago.

:00:53. > :00:55.The other drugs I've been on make you feel absolutely horrendous.

:00:56. > :00:59.This one, I can leave work, I go get it, I go back to work

:01:00. > :01:02.Kadcyla is such a huge advance because it delivers

:01:03. > :01:05.toxins straight into the cancer cell, meaning they don't spread

:01:06. > :01:09.around the body and don't produce the debilitating side`effects

:01:10. > :01:14.But a year's treatment costs ?90,000.

:01:15. > :01:18.Those in charge of NHS medicines say that is too expensive

:01:19. > :01:24.The NHS has to recognise it has to provide for all diseases

:01:25. > :01:28.and conditions and so it has to balance the benefits

:01:29. > :01:34.that a new treatment brings with what the NHS is expected to pay.

:01:35. > :01:35.For Michelle and her consultant, though,

:01:36. > :01:42.I do not think you can put a price on the next Christmas or the next

:01:43. > :01:46.Those are the memories that those kids will carry with them

:01:47. > :01:53.It's about people's lives and their value in society.

:01:54. > :01:57.These suits sit behind a desk and make these decisions without getting

:01:58. > :02:02.out there and asking patients, seeing the difference that it makes.

:02:03. > :02:07.Could they sit and say to my family, "Sorry, we can't afford this."

:02:08. > :02:10.For now, doctors will still be able to apply to a special fund

:02:11. > :02:15.But as that pot of money runs out in 2016, there is now

:02:16. > :02:18.a huge question mark over a treatment that is not yet

:02:19. > :02:22.curing cancers but is giving patients an extra six extra months

:02:23. > :02:31.of quality life they didn't think they'd get.

:02:32. > :02:32.Three men, arrested in Borneo over the killing

:02:33. > :02:35.of two Newcastle University medical students, have tested positive

:02:36. > :02:41.Neil Dalton and Aidan Brunger, who were both 22, were stabbed

:02:42. > :02:45.in the city of Kuching. Mark Denten reports.

:02:51. > :02:53.the loss of two young men, Neil Dalton and Aidan Brunger, who came

:02:54. > :02:58.to Malaysia to save lives, only to have theirs cut tragically short.

:02:59. > :03:01.They were heading back to their hostel here when they were attacked.

:03:02. > :03:03.Malaysian police have arrested four men and say they've admitted

:03:04. > :03:07.their crime. In a preliminary report seen by the BBC,

:03:08. > :03:09.police say three of the suspects have tested positive for

:03:10. > :03:14.the drug crystal meth, known locally as syabu and reportedly available

:03:15. > :03:18.Meanwhile, Newcastle University staff are

:03:19. > :03:23.They are part of our Newcastle family and the wider family

:03:24. > :03:29.I have to say the grief and sadness is shared not only

:03:30. > :03:32.by all the medical staff that they have come in touch with

:03:33. > :03:37.and the hospitals, but also the general population of Kuching.

:03:38. > :03:40.Local people coming to light candles, put flowers,

:03:41. > :03:46.and wreaths from just about every organisation of substance here.

:03:47. > :03:50.Everybody in this society is stunned and shocked.

:03:51. > :03:53.Tributes have also been paid by British tourists in the area.

:03:54. > :03:59.We just wanted to pay respects for the loss of these two lives, really.

:04:00. > :04:04.The guys were in the same bar as us earlier on in the evening.

:04:05. > :04:08.Everyone seemed to be having a good time, you know.

:04:12. > :04:13.A post mortem examination has been carried out on the bodies

:04:58. > :05:01.Her dad hopes to raise ?12,000 at the Ride London event,

:05:05. > :05:07.Her parents say stem cell transplantation could eventually

:05:08. > :05:15.Fingers crossed, what we are funding eventually will help Ella, and

:05:16. > :05:19.until that point we will just keep her eyes as healthy as we can, and

:05:20. > :05:26.hope in the future, at some point, she will have some sight restored.

:05:27. > :05:29.Now, he was almost drowned, lived rough for 15 years on

:05:30. > :05:32.Seaham Docks and lost an eye in a fight with his brother.

:05:33. > :05:36.But now, 20`year`old Nelson, has been named National Cat of the Year

:05:37. > :05:41.His incredible life story convinced the charity to choose him

:05:42. > :05:44.as their Cat of the Year, at a ceremony in London last night.

:05:45. > :05:48.His owners, Andrea and Dave are thrilled to have

:05:49. > :05:53.found him and it looks as though Nelson's pretty content too.

:05:54. > :05:56.I thought his story was a good one, otherwise I wouldn't have done it.

:05:57. > :05:59.I thought he had a chance of winning a category, which was

:06:00. > :06:05.When I saw the other finalists, they were lovely stories, as well,

:06:06. > :06:08.but I thought he's probably in with a chance of winning that category.

:06:09. > :06:11.Then all the winners in the individual categories were put

:06:12. > :06:18.in towards the National Cat award, which he then went on to win.
