:01:14. > :01:16.place in private last week, were killed in Kuching, where thdy had

:01:17. > :01:23.Staff and students from Newcastle University were among the mourners.

:01:24. > :01:35.It was a response that showdd just how popular this young man had been.

:01:36. > :01:43.As many as 500 people arrivdd at the church in Belper to say

:01:44. > :01:46.The 22`year`old student was killed in Borneo earlier this month.

:01:47. > :01:50.He was working in a hospital, on placement from Newcastle Unhversity.

:01:51. > :01:53.Many others fellow students attended the funeral, along with old school

:01:54. > :01:59.friends and his cricket teal, who wore their whites.

:02:00. > :02:02.He was very popular, he made people laugh, he was fun to

:02:03. > :02:06.be with, but at the same tile he really cared about people.

:02:07. > :02:08.Even his family saw him as an inspiration to them,

:02:09. > :02:12.so that is what I hope is the message that we get out.

:02:13. > :02:14.After his family arrived and the coffin was carried hn,

:02:15. > :02:18.Two of his best friends spoke and some

:02:19. > :02:25.There may still be questions over who ended his life

:02:26. > :02:28.and exactly why they did it, but today was about remembering

:02:29. > :02:48.On the first page of the order of service, it simply says "Don t

:02:49. > :02:54.be sad that it's gone, be h`ppy that it happened."

:02:55. > :02:57.Even though it has been a short`lived

:02:58. > :03:01.life, it has been well lived and I want people to go away and say,

:03:02. > :03:05.It is such a shame that his life has ended so suddenly,

:03:06. > :03:11.The impression I want to give is that he is a young man who wanted to

:03:12. > :03:13.change the world and did evdrything he could to achieve that.

:03:14. > :03:16.Joanne Milne, who was thrust into the global spotlight after `n online

:03:17. > :03:19.video appeared of her hearing for the first time, has been asked to

:03:20. > :03:23.become an ambassador for a charity for deaf people, set up by lembers

:03:24. > :03:27.And this week she met Merrill Osmond and his son Justin, who's ddaf.

:03:28. > :03:29.The group set up the Hearing Fund UK.

:03:30. > :03:32.The much`anticipated meeting took place here at the BBC studios

:03:33. > :03:38.Stephanie Cleasby has tonight's Look North Report.

:03:39. > :03:46.They may live thousands of miles apart, but Joanne `nd the

:03:47. > :03:53.Merrill and his son Justin, who is deaf, got in touch with Joanne after

:03:54. > :04:08.It's all right, it is a big, big life changing day.

:04:09. > :04:10.Five months ago, she was overcome with emotion when

:04:11. > :04:13.her cochlear implants were switched on, ending her life of silence.

:04:14. > :04:28.My whole family was emotion`l, anyway, but when we saw what

:04:29. > :04:33.The Osmonds were one of the biggest bands of the 70s

:04:34. > :04:36.and are still entertaining `udiences all over the world.

:04:37. > :04:41.Behind all the showbiz glitz and glamour,

:04:42. > :04:46.We have the same situation in our family.

:04:47. > :04:50.In fact, a lot of people don't know this, but the reason why we got

:04:51. > :04:53.started was because we wantdd to raise money to buy hearing `ids

:04:54. > :04:58.That is why the Osmonds got started singing

:04:59. > :05:08.Justin, who lives with a 90% hearing loss, is conthnuing

:05:09. > :05:10.the Osmond family's work, raising money for deaf children

:05:11. > :05:15.He has asked Joanne to becole an ambassador for his charity.

:05:16. > :05:20.We are just excited and honoured and very privileged to have you be

:05:21. > :05:25.a hearing ambassador with our family and the Osmonds.

:05:26. > :05:30.And to help spread the mess`ge of hope.

:05:31. > :05:37.Back at home, Joanne, whose condition is also claiming her

:05:38. > :05:44.Since becoming an Internet sensation, people all over the world

:05:45. > :06:01.have got in touch, some havd composed music especially for her.

:06:02. > :06:14.And to think someone took the time to do that.

:06:15. > :06:23.It's just absolutely beautiful, what the general public are doing,

:06:24. > :06:34.the messages of support and well wishing.

:06:35. > :06:40.After 40 years of silence, she has now entered a world of noise.

:06:41. > :06:50.The best noise is definitely laughter.

:06:51. > :07:05.And the most moving sound of all, her own voice.

:07:06. > :07:07.I had speech therapy from the age of two.

:07:08. > :07:11.With lip`reading, you can still pick up how you would

:07:12. > :07:22.I remember when I heard my `ccent for the first time, it was very ..

:07:23. > :07:25.I didn't realise that I would have this sort of dialect.

:07:26. > :07:35.And listen to BBC Newcastle tomorrow morning with Alfie and Charlie

:07:36. > :07:45.from 7am, when Joanne makes a bit of a confession about The Osmonds.

:07:46. > :07:48.Police are investigating after pills were found on a production line

:07:49. > :07:52.Staff spotted the tablets on the line at the Nestle f`ctory

:07:53. > :07:58.A spokesman for Nestle said the pills were a standard prescription

:07:59. > :08:03.tablet, commonly prescribed to both adults and children.

:08:04. > :08:08.The incident was spotted before the sweets were pack`ged

:08:09. > :08:11.There are concerns that the Pacer rail buses which operate on many

:08:12. > :08:14.of the region's local lines might stay in use longer than expdcted.

:08:15. > :08:16.The trains, which are around 30 years old,

:08:17. > :08:21.The Department for Transport says they could be modernised to keep

:08:22. > :08:27.Around 70 jobs are being crdated in West Cumbria

:08:28. > :08:30.after a ?3.5 million investlent in a manufacturing company.

:08:31. > :08:33.TIS Cumbria makes items for use in the nuclear decommissioning process.

:08:34. > :08:38.Two local men started the btsiness from scratch 20 years ago.

:08:39. > :08:42.Today their new plant was opened and Alison Freeman was therd.

:08:43. > :08:49.James and Danielle were among workers at TIS that helped build

:08:50. > :08:57.They are just two of the apprentices being given opportunities hdre

:08:58. > :09:10.There aren't that many opportunities for youngsters these days.

:09:11. > :09:13.I probably would have gone down the University route,

:09:14. > :09:16.but I would have had a lot of debt and perhaps not a job.

:09:17. > :09:19.When I set off, there were 05 to 20 applicants, now we get

:09:20. > :09:24.The 4000 square metre manuf`cturing wall is where TIS makes the

:09:25. > :09:28.components it has designed for the nuclear decommissioning process

:09:29. > :09:34.The company has been built up over the past 20 years.

:09:35. > :09:36.Their commitment to local staff and businesses in

:09:37. > :09:44.the supply chain has attracted more than ?700,000 of investment.

:09:45. > :09:49.There is up to 50, 60, 100 xears work to come off the plant.

:09:50. > :09:52.Companies like we have built up at the moment,

:09:53. > :09:56.have to be ready for that and the only people that really need to

:09:57. > :10:04.Manufacturing is 25% of our economy, which is twice the national

:10:05. > :10:10.average, so it is a strength for us in Cumbria, we should build on it.

:10:11. > :10:12.We often struggle for capachty and work sometimes goes out

:10:13. > :10:17.of the county, so it is fantastic to open a new capacity in Cumbria.

:10:18. > :10:23.TIS has opened this warehouse where companies that are working out how

:10:24. > :10:25.to decommission Sellafield can build replicas

:10:26. > :10:33.That also means they can pr`ctice the work they have to carry out in a

:10:34. > :10:38.The parts they will use in the work are made just metrds away,

:10:39. > :10:41.meaning modifications can bd easily made and the company's relationships

:10:42. > :10:43.with clients stays strong, demonstrating the foresight of the

:10:44. > :10:55.Alison's in our Carlisle newsroom now.

:10:56. > :11:03.Alison, how significant is this development?

:11:04. > :11:12.It is to be the largest new manufacturing build in West Cumbria

:11:13. > :11:17.for the past 30 years and it is hoped other businesses will follow

:11:18. > :11:23.suit. Big projects like the decommissioning of Sellafield often

:11:24. > :11:27.find it hard to find capacity and local businesses for work that needs

:11:28. > :11:31.doing. That work then leaves the county. There are more projdcts

:11:32. > :11:38.coming to the county in the coming years. It is hoped local businesses

:11:39. > :11:40.will be able to harness somd of the investment and put it back hnto the

:11:41. > :11:47.local economy. As we saw in Alison's report,

:11:48. > :11:49.companies like TIS are creating a dem`nd

:11:50. > :11:51.for young engineering apprentices. And a new free school that `ims to

:11:52. > :11:55.get young people in the North East into engineering is

:11:56. > :11:57.about to open its doors. Discovery School in Newcastle will

:11:58. > :11:59.try to address a skills shortage in industry, and, it's clailed,

:12:00. > :12:02.help drive the economy. Our Business Correspondent Han Reeve

:12:03. > :12:03.reports. A year late, but,

:12:04. > :12:05.as the cliche has it, better late than never, bec`use this

:12:06. > :12:08.new school in Newcastle, wahting for the new term to get young

:12:09. > :12:11.people into engineering and science, Very much so,

:12:12. > :12:14.we need people to fill the skills gap across the North East, `cross

:12:15. > :12:41.our country and the world, too. They are part

:12:42. > :12:48.of the first intake that will total It offers more than the average

:12:49. > :12:56.school and it hopefully means I will have more experience if I do want to

:12:57. > :13:00.go to university, the school can It was a dream pad and was put up

:13:01. > :14:40.evening, there was something that It was a dream pad and was put up

:14:41. > :14:46.for sale two years ago for 6.5 million pounds. What does this by

:14:47. > :14:51.you? Is soothing pool, seven bedrooms, a bar, a cinema. @ nine

:14:52. > :14:59.car garage. Every detail is the spoke. But it is a buyer 's' market

:15:00. > :15:08.and without a sale the owners dropped the price. We had e`rly bids

:15:09. > :15:14.that are higher than what it sold for, but they did not transpire The

:15:15. > :15:21.client said they had to sell it so we took it down to a level that the

:15:22. > :15:25.markets would react to. The family that bought the house wants to

:15:26. > :15:30.remain anonymous. But it is a bargain. Apparently, you cotld not

:15:31. > :15:35.build this house for the money. Timing is everything. If yot get the

:15:36. > :15:39.timing right, you're done wdll. Further up the road, another mansion

:15:40. > :15:49.for sale. This was is in thd millions. With confidence ldvel is

:15:50. > :15:54.low, houses like this, once known for being the most expensivd in the

:15:55. > :15:58.area, could be named the most discounted.

:15:59. > :16:02.Now let's go to the other end of the "housing" market.

:16:03. > :16:05.Earlier this year we reportdd on the plight of the Cleveland Juniors

:16:06. > :16:07.The club, which once produced stars lhke

:16:08. > :16:10.England player Jonathan Woodgate, had been reduced to using a shipping

:16:11. > :16:17.But the club's been given a new lease of life.

:16:18. > :16:19.And earlier today the former Middlesbrough and England

:16:20. > :16:20.manager Steve McClaren officially opened new facilities.

:16:21. > :16:32.When Frank Rush started Cleveland Juniors in 1985,

:16:33. > :16:35.the dream was to build a football club that would be at the hdart

:16:36. > :16:37.of the community and make top`class coaching available to everyone.

:16:38. > :16:40.But following his death, Frank's dream went into decline

:16:41. > :16:45.and the club ended up calling this rusting cargo container homd.

:16:46. > :16:47.And that was when Frank's d`ughter Michelle stepped

:16:48. > :17:06.It was my life. It was the best years of my life, even though I did

:17:07. > :17:11.not play long for myself. When my dad passed, the idea of loshng the

:17:12. > :17:16.club was too much to lose all at once, so my only option was to do

:17:17. > :17:21.something about it and kind people came along and wanted to help.

:17:22. > :17:23.Today, with the help of a football charity, the Football Found`tion and

:17:24. > :17:27.Sport England, the club now has the facilities Frank had dreamed of

:17:28. > :17:33.And even Steve McClaren was on hand to open the new clubhouse.

:17:34. > :17:43.What impresses me is the fact that they have 42 volunteer coaches who

:17:44. > :17:51.give up their time and energy to coach these boys and that is the

:17:52. > :18:00.most important factor. It is fantastic. I think my dad would be

:18:01. > :18:04.proud and he would be grateful to everyone that has helped us get to

:18:05. > :18:10.this point. I think he would be taken aback by it, but I know he is

:18:11. > :18:17.seeing it and he will be just as happy as we are.

:18:18. > :18:23.Sunderland reached the final of the Capital One Cup back in March.

:18:24. > :18:25.Tonight they're at 2011 winners Birmingham City

:18:26. > :18:28.Already through to this evening s draw are Newcastle

:18:29. > :18:33.Both avoided upsets against League One opposition last night.

:18:34. > :18:37.It's a tried and trusted clhche but goals really can be rather

:18:38. > :18:40.like buses ` you wait 50 minutes for one to turn up and four come

:18:41. > :18:44.along at once, well within a quarter of an hour at least.

:18:45. > :18:46.Lee Tomlin's good start to the season continues.

:18:47. > :18:49.He put Boro in front against Preston.

:18:50. > :18:51.Just three minutes later, a Teessider, Jordan,

:18:52. > :18:56.But when Albert Adomah's te`sing cross was turned into his own net

:18:57. > :19:01.by Tom Clarke under pressurd from Bradley Fewster, you sdnsed a

:19:02. > :19:04.Boro side with half the teal made up of fringe players still had enough

:19:05. > :19:09.Tomlin completed the scoring to make it 3`1 after Preston had wasted

:19:10. > :19:14.He could be an important pl`yer for Boro if they're to launch

:19:15. > :19:18.The League is also Newcastld's priority, although these so`king

:19:19. > :19:25.They haven't had too much to cheer in the knockout competitions lately.

:19:26. > :19:28.Mind you, Alan Pardew's dechsion to field a pretty strong te`m

:19:29. > :19:31.It was one of his more frustrating fringe players,

:19:32. > :19:36.Ex`Sunderland defender John Egan turning the ball into his own net.

:19:37. > :19:38.League One Gillingham weren't planning just to make up

:19:39. > :19:42.Massadio Haidara could have doubled the visitors' lead

:19:43. > :19:46.in the second half, but Tim Krul had to be at his sharpest to sed them

:19:47. > :19:53.Now they just need to score a goal for themselves this season.

:19:54. > :19:55.So it's Sunderland's turn tonight, they're playing Birmingham.

:19:56. > :19:58.The Black Cats clearly know what it takes to make it to Wembley,

:19:59. > :20:01.having made the League Cup final last season, but head coach

:20:02. > :20:05.Gus Poyet isn't expecting an easy ride, as we report.

:20:06. > :20:07.When Sunderland take on Birlingham tonight,

:20:08. > :20:11.they will be up against a f`miliar face in Blues manager Lee Clark

:20:12. > :20:14.The former Newcastle midfielder spent two years

:20:15. > :20:21.on Wearside helping the Black Cats get promotion in 1999.

:20:22. > :20:23.But he was forced to leave after being spotted wearing

:20:24. > :20:29.15 years on, that is water tnder the bridge as Sunderland had for their

:20:30. > :20:43.They were talking more about Wembley than anything else.

:20:44. > :20:49.Now, if it is difficult to get to Wembley

:20:50. > :20:56.But to get there you must perform and beat teams.

:20:57. > :20:59.After draws with West Brom and man United,

:21:00. > :21:04.Gus Poyet's team are looking to pick up their first win of the sdason.

:21:05. > :21:07.They are favourites ahead of tonight's tie, but

:21:08. > :21:16.the Uruguayan is not taking another extended cup tie for granted.

:21:17. > :21:19.Sometimes, you get lucky and get tough teams in the beginning and

:21:20. > :21:33.When you win, I think it helps the group.

:21:34. > :21:35.And you can watch highlights of this evening's and last night's

:21:36. > :21:44.Capital One Cup ties here on BBC1 in The League Cup Show.

:21:45. > :21:46.Hoping to play in next season's League Cup are Gateshead.

:21:47. > :21:49.But the Conference play`off finalists will have to achidve

:21:50. > :21:52.promotion without their exchting young forward Marcus Maddison who

:21:53. > :21:56.today joined Peterborough United on a four`year deal.

:21:57. > :21:59.Maddison, seen here after scoring in the first game of the season, was

:22:00. > :22:10.Now, on last night's Look North Brendan Foster joined us here in the

:22:11. > :22:13.studio to announce that Sting would be performing tracks from hhs album

:22:14. > :22:16.The Last Ship at the spectacular opening of the One Millionth runner

:22:17. > :22:18.celebrations before this year's Great North Run.

:22:19. > :22:22.But it's not going to be thd only chance fans have to hear hil.

:22:23. > :22:25.Because next April Sting is to stage two concerts at the Sage, G`teshead.

:22:26. > :22:28.He'll be joined by other North East music stars performing the `lbum,

:22:29. > :22:31.which was inspired by his experiences growing tp in the

:22:32. > :22:34.Proceeds from the two concerts will go towards the Sage

:22:35. > :22:53.Here's our arts reporter Sharuna Sagar.

:22:54. > :23:00.This was in New York in October in aid of the city's Public Thdatre.

:23:01. > :23:02.And that run was the only time he's actually

:23:03. > :23:07.Inspired by the shipbuilding community in Wallsend where he was

:23:08. > :23:10.born and raised, the songs form part of a Broadway

:23:11. > :23:17.The original idea was borne on Tyneside and the intention was

:23:18. > :23:41.It was with local actors originally. It was important is to

:23:42. > :23:43.begin. What I would really like to do is take it back there. T`ke that

:23:44. > :23:48.ship back. And so The Last Ship is comhng

:23:49. > :23:51.back in April next year. Two concerts on the 23rd and 24th

:23:52. > :24:06.this time to raise money for Sage It is an amazing birthday present.

:24:07. > :24:14.It is a statement. He has sden the work we are doing and I think he has

:24:15. > :24:20.a sense of how important it is. He has generously donated his own time

:24:21. > :24:24.to the project and this is his way of securing our foundation for the

:24:25. > :24:30.long`term and I think it is a very generous thing for him to do.

:24:31. > :24:32.Sting will be performing with many of the region's best loved

:24:33. > :24:34.musicians including a Northtmbrian pipe player AC/DC's Brian Johnson.

:24:35. > :24:37.The price of tickets is expdcted to be high and the demand

:24:38. > :25:11.We have to compete with that finish. Temperatures got to within ` degree

:25:12. > :25:21.of freezing last night. This afternoon, the breeze comes and we

:25:22. > :25:26.saw highs of 19 Celsius. Yot can see to the south`west, a lot of cloud

:25:27. > :25:30.and rain and that is beginnhng to head our way. As we had through this

:25:31. > :25:35.evening and overnight, the cloud will continue to thicken up from the

:25:36. > :25:40.south`west and eventually the cloud will produce rain. Most of the rain

:25:41. > :25:43.will be from main hours. It will move through fairly quickly, much

:25:44. > :25:52.milder than last night, temperatures in double figures for all the coming

:25:53. > :26:00.night. Tomorrow morning, rahn clears North and East and behind it we
