:00:43. > :00:47.cloud, it should stay fine and dry. Even if it is a bit cloudy we should

:00:48. > :00:50.see sunshine coming through. All in all looking pretty good. Sophie

:00:51. > :01:06.In the programme tonight. it from Edinburgh we

:01:07. > :01:08.The computer system that sole subpostmasters blame

:01:09. > :01:11.for wrecking their livelihoods is branded not fit for purpose.

:01:12. > :01:15.Also tonight, a river search for a missing 17`year`old ends with

:01:16. > :01:18.The new machine at one of our hospitals

:01:19. > :01:26.The book that's made unlikely stars of former factory workers

:01:27. > :01:31.Also tonight, we launch our search for

:01:32. > :01:38.And what next for the Gateshead Thunder rugby league team,

:01:39. > :01:52.as they enter the play`offs, and move in with rugby union's Falcons?

:01:53. > :01:55.They lost everything ` their jobs, businesses and reputations.

:01:56. > :01:58.Earlier this year, Look North exclusively revealed how more than

:01:59. > :02:03.100 sub postmasters claimed a faulty computer system made it appdar they

:02:04. > :02:10.were stealing from their employers when they'd done nothing wrong.

:02:11. > :02:13.Now we've seen a confidential independent report,

:02:14. > :02:15.commissioned by the Post Office into its Horizon computer sxstem.

:02:16. > :02:18.It says there were faults whth the system and it was not fht

:02:19. > :02:25.Stuart Whincup has this exclusive Look North report.

:02:26. > :02:28.They lost their jobs, businesses and reputations.

:02:29. > :02:31.For the last three months, these people have been tellhng

:02:32. > :02:34.Look North how a computer f`ult destroyed their lives.

:02:35. > :02:38.Sarah Burges Boyd told us how the Post Office claimed she stole

:02:39. > :02:45.It wasn't true, but it took her two years to clear her name.

:02:46. > :03:04.Kevin Carter told the Post Office there was a fault with

:03:05. > :03:08.his computer system and the money wasn't adding up.

:03:09. > :03:12.Instead of thanking him, the auditors told him to pax up

:03:13. > :03:18.At the end of the day, they gave me the option to sell

:03:19. > :03:20.the business, which I've just completed, had to pay them ?54, 00

:03:21. > :03:27.Now Look North has seen a confidential independent report

:03:28. > :03:30.investigating complaints from 150 subpostmasters.

:03:31. > :03:34.It's highly critical of the Post Office and says there were

:03:35. > :03:39.a catalogue of faults with the Horizon computer system.

:03:40. > :03:42.They included things like the money from the cash and Lottery

:03:43. > :03:45.machines not matching up with the figure on the computer system.

:03:46. > :03:48.In some branches, it recorded the sale of 12 lonth tax

:03:49. > :03:54.Sub postmasters said the training was insufficient,

:03:55. > :03:57.the computer hardware was old and the helpline unhelpful.

:03:58. > :04:00.The report said Post Office investigators seemed more kden

:04:01. > :04:05.on seeking a charge for false accounting rather than

:04:06. > :04:11.investigating the root causd of the suspected problems.

:04:12. > :04:13.They disregarded the possibhlity that the Horizon computer sxstem

:04:14. > :04:20.For some of the people who tsed it, the system was not fit for purpose.

:04:21. > :04:25.In a letter to claiments thd Post Office says it does not accept

:04:26. > :04:28.the findings of the Independent report which it commissioned.

:04:29. > :04:31.I don't see how they can have an independent report and

:04:32. > :04:34.at the end of it say, we don't agree with that, wd will

:04:35. > :04:43.Former police officer Peter Holmes was charged with false accotnting

:04:44. > :04:48.and theft when ?46,000 went missing from the Post Office he used to run.

:04:49. > :04:50.He's always blamed the Horizon computer system

:04:51. > :04:55.and was not surprised when we told him of the report's findings.

:04:56. > :04:57.It's the equipment that's wrong it's the computer system th`t's

:04:58. > :05:00.wrong and we didn't get any help from anybody.

:05:01. > :05:07.I think the report is absolutely right, spot on.

:05:08. > :05:24.The Post Office gave us this response.

:05:25. > :05:29.The Post Office says its colputer system works well for the mhllions

:05:30. > :05:36.But those who've lost their jobs, businesses and reputations say

:05:37. > :05:54.Police searching for a missing teenager in the Rhver Wear

:05:55. > :05:58.Officers had been looking for 17`year`old Jordan Roberts

:05:59. > :06:01.since he was reported missing yesterday while playing with friends

:06:02. > :06:07.Jonathan Swingler reports from the scene.

:06:08. > :06:09.The alarm was raised shortlx after 5pm yesterday.

:06:10. > :06:13.Two brothers had got into trouble in the water.

:06:14. > :06:16.A friend in his 20s managed to rescue one of them.

:06:17. > :06:18.This man is staying at the nearby caravan park.

:06:19. > :06:25.I had been fishing at this this end of the rivdr.

:06:26. > :06:29.He was screaming, phone an ambulance!

:06:30. > :06:33.By the time I got to the house to ring the bell

:06:34. > :06:36.for an ambulance, the securhty guard had already phoned it.

:06:37. > :06:40.But 17`year`old Jordan Roberts could not be found.

:06:41. > :06:42.This afternoon, it has been confirmed that

:06:43. > :06:46.The family has been told by the police.

:06:47. > :06:48.Any investigation like this is very, very difficult.

:06:49. > :06:53.It is especially traumatic dealing with

:06:54. > :06:57.a family who've lost not only one of their sons but another son who has

:06:58. > :06:59.been close and effectively brought back from the brink of death.

:07:00. > :07:03.Jordan's brother received CPR here on the river bank.

:07:04. > :07:11.He is in hospital and his condition is described as poorly but stable.

:07:12. > :07:14.A preliminary report on the crash of Malaysia Airlines flight MH07 has

:07:15. > :07:18.found that it was struck by numerous high`energy objects which c`used it

:07:19. > :07:25.The findings, by the Dutch Safety Board,

:07:26. > :07:30.appear to fit with suggestions it was shot down by a missile.

:07:31. > :07:33.All 298 passengers and crew were killed, including Newcastle United

:07:34. > :07:37.Liam's father Barry has seen the report, he says he isn't looking

:07:38. > :07:48.I'm happy to know about the crash, that they probably died instantly.

:07:49. > :07:51.It doesn't really matter who has done it because they are sthll dead.

:07:52. > :07:56.I know that everybody is bl`ming everybody else,

:07:57. > :08:02.but we can't do anything about it, we've just got to move on.

:08:03. > :08:05.Controversial plans for a w`ste incinerator near Knaresborotgh have

:08:06. > :08:10.The government pulled its funding from the ?1.4 bhllion

:08:11. > :08:16.But the council wants to go ahead with the plans anyway.

:08:17. > :08:30.How do get rid of rubbish. Ht is something they have been trxing to

:08:31. > :08:36.sort out for over a decade hn North Yorkshire. Today, councillors voted

:08:37. > :08:46.for a wasteland near NewsBltr to get the go`ahead. People are saxing that

:08:47. > :08:52.it is old technology. This hs a waste recovery centre. It whll

:08:53. > :08:59.enhance recycling as well. But for many campaigners, this issud is

:09:00. > :09:04.about the incinerator. However, councillors say the plant is the

:09:05. > :09:10.option which offers the most value for money and it will mean they will

:09:11. > :09:18.not have to rely on landfill sites. This is where the surgery is going

:09:19. > :09:21.to be built `` the incinerator. The council insists that this plant will

:09:22. > :09:27.be a decent and good neighbour to the local community. But fotr years

:09:28. > :09:32.down the line, and many people who live nearby are still not convinced.

:09:33. > :09:36.This councillor represents the concerns of many residents who live

:09:37. > :09:40.nearby. He says health issuds are number one. There is a lot of worry

:09:41. > :09:49.about what will come out of those chimneys. People here want to

:09:50. > :09:54.breathe fresh air. This thing, I can't guarantee it to anybody that

:09:55. > :10:00.they will breathe fresh air. This is not a done deal, it has to go before

:10:01. > :10:06.a full council meeting next month. But even protesters admit that it is

:10:07. > :10:08.looking likely that an wastd incinerator will soon be nestled in

:10:09. > :10:11.the countryside. Patients around the world are to

:10:12. > :10:14.benefit from a new state of the art It's for people living with vascular

:10:15. > :10:18.birthmarks, which are caused by abnormal blood

:10:19. > :10:21.vessels in or under the skin. It cost ?21,000

:10:22. > :10:23.and its new home is at James Cook BBC Look North's Rebecca O'Neill

:10:24. > :10:30.reports. No need for surgery and no need

:10:31. > :10:35.for scars. 2500 injection treatments h`ve

:10:36. > :10:39.already been performed here at this clinic

:10:40. > :10:44.on patients right across thd UK Even as far afield as Sweden,

:10:45. > :10:54.Ireland and Bulgaria. The clinic sees 120 new pathents

:10:55. > :11:06.every year and they will benefit We've learned that surgery does not

:11:07. > :11:13.suit these patients and thex get much better results without the risk

:11:14. > :11:16.of scars or surgery by injecting Jack Thornton is a patient,

:11:17. > :11:22.he was born with a lymphatic He has had injection treatmdnt,

:11:23. > :11:30.and the ultrasound treatment will Starting school was one

:11:31. > :11:38.of our major worries, we were really concerned about how he would be

:11:39. > :11:41.treated by other children. He started school last week

:11:42. > :11:44.and it could not have gone better. He fitted in perfectly, happy,

:11:45. > :11:59.friendly confident little boy. Children would point it out

:12:00. > :12:01.straightaway, but nobody dods now and that is because of the treatment

:12:02. > :12:03.he has had. None

:12:04. > :12:05.of this would have been possible without the ?21,000 donation from

:12:06. > :12:07.the James Cook voluntary services. I am delighted that it is going to

:12:08. > :12:12.help, not only children, but people from many countries and it `lso is

:12:13. > :12:21.going to help Great Ormond Street. For Jack and thousands

:12:22. > :12:23.of patients around the world, Coming up, were joining Mark Denten

:12:24. > :12:51.on the border. And actor Alun Armstrong tells us

:12:52. > :12:54.just how chuffed he is to h`ve Mostly drive for the next fdw days.

:12:55. > :13:04.Join me later. There are just nine days to go until

:13:05. > :13:07.next week's Scottish referendum Tomorrow,

:13:08. > :13:11.the leaders of the three mahn political parties at Westminster

:13:12. > :13:14.will be in Scotland trying to Meanwhile, people

:13:15. > :13:29.in our region are weighing tp what This week on Look North,

:13:30. > :13:33.our Political Correspondent Mark Denten is travelling the length

:13:34. > :13:35.of the English Scottish border Longtown auction mart,

:13:36. > :13:52.you are looking at the biggdst sheep market in Europe, 7000 anim`ls will

:13:53. > :13:56.be sold here today, but for buyers and sellers from both

:13:57. > :14:03.sides of the border, the hot topic I think there are concerns from

:14:04. > :14:09.farmers on both sides of thd border, particularly the Scottish f`rmers

:14:10. > :14:13.who are bringing stock here every week, in terms of what it whll mean

:14:14. > :14:16.for them, depending on the outcome of the vote, will they be ddaling

:14:17. > :14:21.with sterling, will there bd Twice a week,

:14:22. > :14:33.he comes over from the Mull And with one poll putting yds

:14:34. > :14:38.and no neck and neck, what would he There's going to be more paperwork

:14:39. > :14:43.for a start, I would think, and there is enough paperwork

:14:44. > :14:46.in agriculture without giving us I think it's an absolute disaster if

:14:47. > :15:01.it goes to a yes vote, therd is no If we have a different currdncy

:15:02. > :15:06.it is going to cause complications. When the Look North producers set us

:15:07. > :15:10.off on this Border Trail, they said, don't worry about the transport

:15:11. > :15:12.because you will get a choice. Not quite the right colour,

:15:13. > :15:26.too white. We are in a 1950s'

:15:27. > :15:34.Vintage Silver Rolls Royce. This wedding car business does

:15:35. > :15:46.a lot of trade with Scotland. So many unanswered questions, will

:15:47. > :15:51.it be sterling, will it be the euro? It could put potentially put

:15:52. > :15:55.tourists off coming to our `rea And we survive

:15:56. > :15:56.on the tourist industry. I really think that that wotld have

:15:57. > :16:09.a negative effect on businesses We'll be catching up with M`rk

:16:10. > :16:16.in tomorrow night's Look North. And you can add your thoughts on the

:16:17. > :16:19.referendum debate on Twitter, using Former factory workers from Carlisle

:16:20. > :16:34.have become unlikely stars thanks to a new book by writer Hunter Davies

:16:35. > :16:36.which chronicles their working lives at one of the

:16:37. > :16:39.country's last biscuit factories. The women, known locally

:16:40. > :16:41.as cracker packers, worked `t Some of this work is now allost

:16:42. > :16:51.fully automated ` machines effectively packing

:16:52. > :16:54.the little round crackers that have In years gone by,

:16:55. > :16:58.this work was done by hand, Their story, according to

:16:59. > :17:03.the author in his new book, is the story of social change in the

:17:04. > :17:14.last decades of the 20th century. It's basically the history

:17:15. > :17:17.of the six women who are retired The publisher did not

:17:18. > :17:19.like the title. Or is it cracker meaning wh`t

:17:20. > :17:22.a scorcher. So it's been called The Biscuit

:17:23. > :17:25.Girls, it's social history `nd I just wanted to commemorate

:17:26. > :17:34.the lives of these women. Sadly, one of the women featured

:17:35. > :17:37.in the book has died, but the five others were at a special latnch

:17:38. > :17:40.inside the factory they werd all I came from school

:17:41. > :19:38.and always enjoyed it. Most of the time, I think it's nice

:19:39. > :19:41.when people come up and say hello, especially if they say they have

:19:42. > :19:46.enjoyed what you have done. Alan was brought up in

:19:47. > :19:49.Annfield Plain. Now his achievements have bden

:19:50. > :19:52.recognised in more solid form. Stanley's Civic Hall has now been

:19:53. > :19:54.renamed the Alun Armstrong Theatre. Appropriately,

:19:55. > :19:57.his stage career began therd. All actors have a terrible nightmare

:19:58. > :20:02.where they are suddenly in ` theatre and they haven't learned thd lines

:20:03. > :20:05.and they wake up in a cold sweat. Well, for years, I would have

:20:06. > :20:08.a dream where I was on this stage and I didn't know the lines and I

:20:09. > :20:13.used to wake up in a cold sweat Said Mistress Bell,

:20:14. > :20:17.you had better clean the st`irs .. From Geordie music hall herd with

:20:18. > :20:21.Tim Healey to blockbuster movies with Clint Eastwood to

:20:22. > :20:24.Les Miserables in the West Dnd. To have something

:20:25. > :20:30.like this is incredible and, of course, my parents would have

:20:31. > :20:54.been proud as peacocks. Now, never short of our showbiz

:20:55. > :20:59.story. A friend of mine is in the opening

:21:00. > :21:05.scene in get Carter. That's amazing. What have you got?

:21:06. > :21:07.There's a rugby double headdr on Tyneside this Sunday.

:21:08. > :21:10.League side Gateshead Thunddr will play their biggest game for years

:21:11. > :21:12.in the Championship One plaxoffs straight after their new owners

:21:13. > :21:14.Newcastle Falcons, play thehr first home game of the season.

:21:15. > :21:18.And it could be the start of more Thunder games at Kingston P`rk.

:21:19. > :21:56.Everybody thought, here we go again,. But there's a lot of

:21:57. > :22:04.optimism around the place. Good things are starting to happdn.

:22:05. > :22:08.Stags, who they've beaten twice already this season. They'll be

:22:09. > :22:14.playing at 6pm at Kingston Park after the Falcons face London Irish.

:22:15. > :22:23.The RFL has given the game `re go`ahead. Even though the Stags have

:22:24. > :22:25.complained that some of thehr players won't make the round`trip if

:22:26. > :22:30.they have work the next day. We are in a competition where

:22:31. > :22:33.everyone beats everyone every week. There is no complacency in our camp.

:22:34. > :22:36.We've got to keep working h`rd for the rest of the week and hopefully

:22:37. > :22:40.the results will come off the back of it. It's going to be really

:22:41. > :22:43.exciting, the lads are lookhng forward to it. Hopefully, wd'll get

:22:44. > :22:45.a decent crowd stop behind the Falcons game

:22:46. > :22:48.and obviously will get our own loyal fans as well. It's more of ` big

:22:49. > :22:51.stage, to be honest. The new 3G artificial pitch now allows for

:22:52. > :22:54.unlimited rugby to be played here. So we could be seeing more Gateshead

:22:55. > :22:57.Thunder games here in the ftture. We are conscious that Gateshead Thunder

:22:58. > :23:00.have a 15 year history in G`teshead. We're not saying definitely, let's

:23:01. > :23:03.get this season out of the way, On to cricket, and a vital round of

:23:04. > :23:15.matches for our teams at both ends Adam Lyth gave leaders Yorkshire

:23:16. > :23:21.a great start against title rivals Nottinghamshire,

:23:22. > :23:23.with a century at Trent Bridge. Lyth, who's from Whitby

:23:24. > :23:25.and who's being tipped for `n England call`up, shared an opening

:23:26. > :23:28.stand of 176 with Andrew Leds. He was eventually caught

:23:29. > :23:31.and bowled by a fellow`Yorkshireman ` veteran spinner Gary Keedx `

:23:32. > :23:36.for a very impressive 122. And Yorkshire will go

:23:37. > :23:41.into the second day on... And Scott Borthwick made a welcome

:23:42. > :23:44.return to form for Durham, with a big century in their relegation

:23:45. > :23:48.battle with Middlesex at Lord's Now, the search has begun to find

:23:49. > :24:02.the region's top sporting volunteer. We're looking for the man or woman

:24:03. > :24:05.who really goes the extra mhle to keep his or her club going,

:24:06. > :24:08.or to promote their favourite game. On offer is the title of our

:24:09. > :24:12.Unsung Hero. The winner will be announced at the

:24:13. > :24:15.BBC North East Sports Awards, this year taking place at the Billingham

:24:16. > :24:17.Forum Theatre on Teesside, Last year,

:24:18. > :24:24.the honour went to long`serving Gateshead athletics coach

:24:25. > :24:28.Sid Robson, who went on to represent the region at the BBC Sports

:24:29. > :24:31.Personality of the Year Awards, where he was up against the other

:24:32. > :24:33.winners from around the country So it's time to put

:24:34. > :24:35.your nominations in. all one word ` to find out more

:24:36. > :24:42.about how to put someone forward. Nominations close

:24:43. > :24:44.on Monday the 20th of Octobdr. You can also call 0845 308

:24:45. > :24:47.8000 to request a nomination Calls cost up to 5p a minutd

:24:48. > :24:52.from most landlines. And calls from mobiles may

:24:53. > :25:01.cost considerably more. The last day we'll send out

:25:02. > :25:31.nomination forms will be So far, so good. Here is thd lovely

:25:32. > :25:44.misty morning on the Cumbri`n border. And the fruitfulness? Here

:25:45. > :25:48.are some autumn berries. Tolorrow, and for the next few days, high

:25:49. > :25:53.pressure is in charge of thd weather, nothing changing vdry

:25:54. > :26:01.quickly. Staying mostly dry and Chile at night. Tonight, well broken

:26:02. > :26:10.cloud, some mist and fog patches and Chile. Just into single figtres But

:26:11. > :26:24.like last night, some places could drop to 56 degrees. `` five or six

:26:25. > :26:34.degrees. Tomorrow, some patchy cloud of round, possibly feeling dven a

:26:35. > :26:42.little bit warmer. Could get up to 22 Celsius in parts of comp via ``

:26:43. > :26:48.Cumbria. Always cooler further east, but 18 or 90 degrees in the sunshine

:26:49. > :26:55.fair. High pressure in charge of the weather. The centre of it is

:26:56. > :27:00.drifting to Scandinavia, but the pressure is high over the UK the
