:00:00. > :00:00.sunshine but the risk of a shower later this weekend. Thank you. That

:00:00. > :00:00.is all A boost for the A1,

:00:00. > :00:14.but would Scottish independdnce end the dream of dualling all

:00:15. > :00:17.the way to the Borders? A hi`tech future

:00:18. > :00:22.from the industrial past. How the digital world is taking over

:00:23. > :00:25.a former steel`producing site. And an Autumn migration with

:00:26. > :00:27.a difference. The animal sanctuary that's having

:00:28. > :00:30.to up sticks to a new home, In sport,

:00:31. > :00:36.Magpies boss Alan Pardew saxs Mike Ashley's committed to the club

:00:37. > :00:39.despite rumours he's ready to sell. And Yorkshire are just

:00:40. > :01:04.a day away from being crowndd Over 300 hospital jobs are believed

:01:05. > :01:12.to be under threat at the north`east health trust. We have been told the

:01:13. > :01:20.County Down and Darlington `` County Durham are making redundanches.

:01:21. > :01:26.350 jobs are under threat hdre. That is 4% of the workforce of around

:01:27. > :01:31.8000. The trust runs the Unhversity Hospital of North Durham, Bhshop

:01:32. > :01:38.Auckland and a further hosphtal and staff there will be affected.

:01:39. > :01:45.Are we talking doctors and nurses? The initial job losses are likely to

:01:46. > :01:50.be clerical. Around 300 clerical jobs. One union is worried `bout

:01:51. > :01:57.nurses' jobs. The hospitals are actively recruiting nurses. The

:01:58. > :02:01.Unite union says losing clerical and managerial jobs will impact front

:02:02. > :02:10.line services. It is a 4% work in the `` 4$ cut in

:02:11. > :02:16.the workforce. A massive chtnk of the money goes on the workforce

:02:17. > :02:18.That is not unexpected becatse it is a very knowledge in tense

:02:19. > :02:25.environment and there is a certain amount spent on consumables, like

:02:26. > :02:29.sheets for beds. But at the end of the day it is the knowledge and

:02:30. > :02:34.skills of the professionals in that environment that is being p`id for

:02:35. > :02:40.and that is being cut. Do we know why the jobs are going?

:02:41. > :02:46.The health trust is under fhnancial pressure like lots of trusts. They

:02:47. > :02:53.have lost services such as the speech and language contract that

:02:54. > :02:56.they had. They want to make efficiency savings towards future

:02:57. > :02:59.investments. The Royal Colldge of Nursing has told us that thdse same

:03:00. > :03:06.kinds of reviews and cuts could now be happening at other trusts.

:03:07. > :03:13.I would say we have several trusts in this region that have several

:03:14. > :03:18.work severe cost implications. And also some of the penalties that they

:03:19. > :03:21.get, which again has cost implications. I am afraid that

:03:22. > :03:27.service reviews go on in allost every trust in the region.

:03:28. > :03:31.The Durham and Darlington NHS Trust, what are they saying?

:03:32. > :03:37.They say they are working h`rd to minute by `` minimise front line

:03:38. > :03:42.cuts. 350 is a huge number of job losses

:03:43. > :03:47.and it is important to be clear that we are at starting point whdn

:03:48. > :03:51.assessing numbers. We want to minimise compulsory redundancies

:03:52. > :03:58.through the proposals that we put together, through holding v`cancies

:03:59. > :04:02.for affected staff and redeploying through training and supporting them

:04:03. > :04:06.in any way we can to keep them employed by the trust.

:04:07. > :04:10.There is a meeting next Tuesday between management and unions and a

:04:11. > :04:11.45 day consultation period of these cuts will take place.

:04:12. > :04:15.Thank you. It's been a long time coming

:04:16. > :04:17.but today, Roads Minister John Hayes c`me to

:04:18. > :04:20.Tyneside to officially launch the long`awaited A1 widening scheme

:04:21. > :04:22.around Newcastle and Gateshdad. It's costing ?61 million and it ll

:04:23. > :04:25.see the most congested four miles of the A1, between the Coal House

:04:26. > :04:28.Roundabout and the Metro Centre It's a huge operation, of course,

:04:29. > :04:34.and it'll take 18 months to Well, Jim Knight is on a brhdge

:04:35. > :04:43.right over the A1 for us now. Yes, Jeff, as you can see, things

:04:44. > :05:02.are moving pretty freely now. The A1 Western Bypass must have

:05:03. > :05:04.frustrated us all Just too much traffic, coming on and

:05:05. > :05:10.off just two lanes, has cre`ted some But,

:05:11. > :05:15.at a rather surreal news conference in the middle of the Gateshdad Quays

:05:16. > :05:33.interchange, the Roads Minster It will improve safety, help with

:05:34. > :05:36.congestion and improve journey times. Those three fundamental

:05:37. > :05:39.objectives lie at the heart of what this is all about.

:05:40. > :05:41.Off course, there'll be some pain before the gain.

:05:42. > :05:43.Building the extra lane either side and keeping the traffic

:05:44. > :05:56.There will be some overnight closures and diversion routds. There

:05:57. > :06:00.will be some pain in the short`term but it has an 18 month programme in

:06:01. > :06:04.the short`term but it has an 18 month programme and once it has

:06:05. > :06:06.finished but also to those travelling locally.

:06:07. > :06:09.So, joy at last on the Western Bypass but what abott

:06:10. > :06:12.further North and that constant political hot potato of dualling the

:06:13. > :06:27.It would be quite premature for me to prejudge the proper analxsis of

:06:28. > :06:33.that. I can't say fairer th`n that. I know the problem, I know the

:06:34. > :06:38.road, I use the road. I will look at it and see the best way forward and

:06:39. > :06:41.announce it not after the election, before the election, before the end

:06:42. > :06:44.of this year. So you will make a commitment before

:06:45. > :06:46.the end of the year? I will make a commitment on what we

:06:47. > :06:49.can do before the end of thhs year. But what about the impact

:06:50. > :06:52.of the Scottish referendum? Will a Yes vote scupper any hopes of

:06:53. > :07:01.dualling the road to the Borders? Well, it would

:07:02. > :07:03.off course change the equathon somewhat, effectively changhng

:07:04. > :07:06.the A1 through Northumberland The minister today however

:07:07. > :07:24.seemed pretty confident it My interests are in making sure that

:07:25. > :07:29.the people I'm responsible for get the best outcome. A range of options

:07:30. > :07:35.will be brought to my attention and I will make a decision about that.

:07:36. > :07:41.It is for the people of Scotland to make this once`in`a`lifetimd

:07:42. > :07:44.momentous decision and I thhnk they will make the rate decision because

:07:45. > :07:49.after all we are better off together.

:07:50. > :07:53.Perhaps all the more reason for the people of Northumberland is to keep

:07:54. > :07:55.a wary eye on those momentots events unfolding in Scotland in thd next

:07:56. > :08:00.week. A Cumbria police officer

:08:01. > :08:03.and her husband have been charged, following an investigation

:08:04. > :08:06.into fraud allegations. Tracy Taylor,

:08:07. > :08:09.who's 42 and from Irthington in Carlisle, is due before maghstrates

:08:10. > :08:12.next month, along with her husband, Work has started on a new mddia hub,

:08:13. > :08:24.to attract creative It's not in an established hi`tech

:08:25. > :08:27.centre but in Stockton on Tdes. The development

:08:28. > :08:29.of an innovation centre, for new and growing companids,

:08:30. > :08:32.is welcome news in a town that's Our Business Correspondent,

:08:33. > :08:43.Ian Reeve, reports. The very start of what is hoped to

:08:44. > :08:48.be a new industry in Stockton. Young, dynamic, new. It will be a

:08:49. > :08:54.far cry from what used to h`ppen on this site.

:08:55. > :09:05.In some ways, steel`making hs like cooking. They produce a high`quality

:09:06. > :09:10.steel for which Britain is famous. This will be a 16,000 squard feet

:09:11. > :09:19.innovation centre. We will be providing for new start`up

:09:20. > :09:21.businesses. For the digital creative and scientific industries.

:09:22. > :09:26.This is just the sort of business the new creative centre wants to

:09:27. > :09:33.bring in. This company develops devices for mobile phones. Sharing

:09:34. > :09:45.space and knowledge with thd like`minded is rather attractive.

:09:46. > :09:48.It helps so much. You can share resources and knowledge. We need

:09:49. > :09:52.people around us that can hdlp us move forward.

:09:53. > :09:57.The question now is whether there are enough people in Stockton to

:09:58. > :10:07.fill what will be a rather big building. With reality TV show

:10:08. > :10:13.Benefits Street being filmed less than a mile away, critics s`y trying

:10:14. > :10:18.to break a stereotypical vidw of this town is probably a gamble.

:10:19. > :10:21.Coming up next, we're catchhng up with Mark Denten on the Border.

:10:22. > :10:25.And the ups and downs of behng a Sunderland fan ` somebody had to

:10:26. > :10:36.I will have the latest inst`lment in the weather photo competition as

:10:37. > :10:40.well as the forecast. Now, with the polls tightenhng ahead

:10:41. > :10:43.of next week's Scottish inddpendence referendum, every vote will count,

:10:44. > :10:45.including those of people from All this week,

:10:46. > :10:49.our Political Correspondent, Mark Denten, is on a border trail,

:10:50. > :10:53.ahead of the referendum. Tonight he's just over the border,

:10:54. > :10:55.in Coldstream, canvassing the views of the North East

:10:56. > :11:22."ex pats" who could play a crucial It is already quite busy here, as

:11:23. > :11:26.you can see. This town is vdry close to the border and close to

:11:27. > :11:30.Northumberland. There's lots of people coming back and forw`rd. What

:11:31. > :11:34.is the mood of this town ahdad of that referendum?

:11:35. > :11:45.The younger generation is yds and the older people are undecided and

:11:46. > :11:51.now `` no voters. I don't know that people have been told enough about

:11:52. > :11:59.how severe it will be. Lots of people use services on both

:12:00. > :12:02.sides of the border. You can cross and use services. Our peopld

:12:03. > :12:06.competent here in Scotland just on the border that that will continue,

:12:07. > :12:11.that you continue to be fridnds and neighbours with your neighbours in

:12:12. > :12:14.the north`east? Some are quite confident, I'm quite

:12:15. > :12:19.confident it won't change, but lots of people are not, lots are

:12:20. > :12:24.threatened because there's lots of fear mongering going on.

:12:25. > :12:27.I have also been getting thd mood of some English voters from thd

:12:28. > :12:48.north`east end this town who will be voting next week.

:12:49. > :13:01.Across the tweet from Northtmberland at the Coldstream Bridge, you find

:13:02. > :13:07.Scotland but also a Geordie. It was quite famous as a marriage

:13:08. > :13:09.venue just like Gretna Green. Bill is originally from Newcastle

:13:10. > :13:16.and now lives in the old marriage house. It is the first building in

:13:17. > :13:23.Scotland. I have had no anilosity at all in the Borders.

:13:24. > :13:28.There are super walks in thd countryside is brilliant and I have

:13:29. > :13:31.no intention of moving. With the poll is narrowing, every

:13:32. > :13:39.vote will count in the referendum, including those of Jean and Joseph.

:13:40. > :13:43.They are now living in Coldstream. Although floating voters, they are

:13:44. > :13:50.leaning towards yes. If it doesn't touch the pensions.

:13:51. > :13:56.And the tax. And the NHS, if they stay as they

:13:57. > :14:01.are then we are halfway there. So although you are floating, you

:14:02. > :14:07.are moving towards the Yes vote are you?

:14:08. > :14:11.Fair comment. I would say that is a fair comment.

:14:12. > :14:16.If we get independence and lake a success of it, which I have a RICO

:14:17. > :14:27.confident that we will `` I have every confidence, I think

:14:28. > :14:31.Westminster will pay attenthon. 97% of the Scottish populathon are

:14:32. > :14:37.registered to vote at the referendum. It is a figure on her of

:14:38. > :14:41.any British election. Back `t the border, Bill has had enough from all

:14:42. > :14:45.sides in this long campaign. I am sick to death of it. I just

:14:46. > :14:53.wish it was over. It has just been so much chuntering on and pdople can

:14:54. > :14:57.trust politicians. That is the view from some parts of

:14:58. > :15:04.the community in Coldstream. Expats from the north`east. Tomorrow, on

:15:05. > :15:06.the final leg of our border trail, we will be in Berwick`upon`Tweed.

:15:07. > :15:12.But for now, back to you. "I feel like Noah, without the Ark

:15:13. > :15:15.and without the water." So says the man running a Ctmbrian

:15:16. > :15:18.animal sanctuary, which is having to move its residents,

:15:19. > :15:23.all 1750 of them, to a new home The land at Wetheriggs near Penrith

:15:24. > :15:27.is being sold, forcing the sanctuary to move to Greta Bridge near

:15:28. > :15:31.Barnard Castle in County Durham Mark McAlindon went to see

:15:32. > :15:34.if the snakes, the birds and all the other exotic creatures were

:15:35. > :15:46.lining up to leave, two`by`two. Moving home is one of the most

:15:47. > :15:47.stressful things humans can do. Just imagine moving with hundreds of

:15:48. > :17:38.animals until. will almost certainly be crowned

:17:39. > :17:42.cricket's County Champions tomorrow. Having taken four quick wickets late

:17:43. > :17:45.yesterday, Yorkshire continued to chip away

:17:46. > :17:47.at Nottinghamshire's batsmen Captain Chris Read frustratdd the

:17:48. > :17:52.bowlers for a while with an unbeaten knock of 81, proving to be Notts'

:17:53. > :17:58.only real hope of making a go of it. But after Adil Rashid took three

:17:59. > :18:01.wickets for 17 runs, the home side could only manage 203,

:18:02. > :18:07.forcing them to follow on. The momentum was all with Yorkshire

:18:08. > :18:11.as Ryan Sidebottom took the wicket of Steve Mulaney with the fhrst ball

:18:12. > :18:15.of the second innings, before the impressive Jack Brooks dismhssed

:18:16. > :18:18.Michael Lumb and Alex Hales. Great wicket keeping from Jonny

:18:19. > :18:23.Bairstow got rid of Samit P`tel And James Taylor postponed

:18:24. > :18:29.the inevitable with an assured half century to make sure Yorkshhre

:18:30. > :18:36.wouldn't claim victory todax. Well, Yorkshire's success m`y well

:18:37. > :18:39.mean they'll be missing mord players to England duty next season

:18:40. > :18:43.and Durham's popular all`rotnder Ben Stokes has also been aw`rded

:18:44. > :18:45.a central contract after some top performances

:18:46. > :18:47.for the County this season. Of course, Durham will be s`fe

:18:48. > :18:51.if they beat fellow relegathon contenders Middlesex at Lord's

:18:52. > :18:54.and the signs are looking good. After a shaky start this morning

:18:55. > :18:56.in the second innings, Captain Paul Collingwood and

:18:57. > :18:59.Gordon Muchall got things b`ck on track and have set Middldsex

:19:00. > :19:09.a big target for victory tolorrow. Newspaper reports have suggdsted

:19:10. > :19:11.that Mike Ashley is looking for a buyer for Newcastle United

:19:12. > :19:14.so he can take over Rangers. He currently has a 9% stake

:19:15. > :19:17.in the Glasgow club but the Scottish FA says he can't increase hhs share

:19:18. > :19:23.whilst he still owns Newcastle. It's because rules state th`t you

:19:24. > :19:25.can't own two clubs It's not an issue now

:19:26. > :19:31.but could be in the future But Magpies manager Alan Pardew says

:19:32. > :19:49.he's unaware That is news to me. I have had the

:19:50. > :19:53.no suggestions from him or `ny signs from him. He has given monex to me

:19:54. > :19:59.this summer which we hope wd have spent well, but only time whll tell

:20:00. > :20:00.on that, but they are settlhng in well. So his commitment to the club

:20:01. > :20:05.is as strong as it has alwaxs been. Now, if you're a football f`n,

:20:06. > :20:08.you'll know how hard it can be, Well, next week,

:20:09. > :20:13.a play about the ups and downs of being a Sunderland supporter will

:20:14. > :20:16.set off on a short North East tour. Yes, it starts at the Custols House

:20:17. > :20:18.in South Shields, and takes in Washington Arts Centre

:20:19. > :20:21.and Durham's Gala Theatre. Written by Black Cats' fan,

:20:22. > :20:23.Tom Kelly, it's called I caught up with actor Paul Dunn

:20:24. > :20:30.in rehearsals. Not on this housing estate

:20:31. > :20:33.but what was here. The whole play is about an ordinary

:20:34. > :20:50.bloke called Kevin Halladay. It is about his likes

:20:51. > :20:54.and his loves and one of his loves He is telling the story

:20:55. > :21:04.in the back garden. He is going through old programmes

:21:05. > :21:10.and remembering his life. We see how following Sunderland

:21:11. > :21:12.and the ups and downs of following Sunderland kind of mirror

:21:13. > :21:16.the ups and downs of his life. Being a Sunderland fan, how tough

:21:17. > :21:19.has that been over the years? Somebody high above writes

:21:20. > :21:24.the script and there has always got Over 50 years of supporting

:21:25. > :21:32.Sunderland, I've endured th`t Tom Kelly, the writer,

:21:33. > :21:37.is a huge fan. He has been watching them

:21:38. > :21:40.a bit longer than I have, He has got that history

:21:41. > :21:46.and has written that into it and it works so well, I think that is why

:21:47. > :21:50.the play has been so popular. I'm kind of privileged he

:21:51. > :21:53.asked me to be involved. But when it is about a subjdct

:21:54. > :22:00.that you love so much, that you can really get passionate about it

:22:01. > :22:05.just makes the job so much dasier. Katie and me have settled

:22:06. > :22:07.into our new routines. And I may have left my heart

:22:08. > :22:17.in Roker Park but there is still plenty of extra

:22:18. > :22:39.time in the Stadium of Light. Looks good.

:22:40. > :22:43.Also looking good are the phctures you sent in for the weather

:22:44. > :22:46.forecast. I met up with our guest judges at

:22:47. > :22:57.The National Trust property. It is almost 50 years and,

:22:58. > :23:05.believe it or not, we always have one of our founder members who are

:23:06. > :23:12.still an active member in the club. We have 40 members now

:23:13. > :23:19.and a waiting list. We meet every Wednesday,

:23:20. > :23:21.come hail, rain or shine. We got a wide range of abilhties,

:23:22. > :23:24.from newcomers to people have been doing it for many years

:23:25. > :23:29.and are very competent. We like this photograph

:23:30. > :23:40.as it is a real picture. It depicts the glorious 12th

:23:41. > :23:43.and a very natural photograph taken We like the lovely colour scheme

:23:44. > :23:51.and the perfect focus The second runner`up is

:23:52. > :23:56.a picture from David. It portrays the efforts

:23:57. > :24:03.of the cyclist battling Which is obvious from the trees

:24:04. > :24:11.the shape of the trees. And the heather gives it an August

:24:12. > :24:13.field. It is

:24:14. > :24:24.quite a recognisable scene. What we like about it is thhs hugely

:24:25. > :24:26.impressive combination of oranges, burnt oranges, and blues,

:24:27. > :24:30.which is a great colour contrast. Very strong composition,

:24:31. > :24:35.nice sense of recession which takes And it creates a lovely mood

:24:36. > :24:42.for August which is lovely sunny day which is now breaking down

:24:43. > :25:15.into a rather stormy night. One of the hotspots of the region at

:25:16. > :25:19.22 Celsius. Over the next few days, high

:25:20. > :25:28.pressure stays with us so it will stay mostly dry. We will sed a trend

:25:29. > :25:36.towards cloudy skies and thhngs will move to be more breezy. That patchy

:25:37. > :25:47.cloud will stay fairly well broken overnight. Under the clear skies, we

:25:48. > :25:54.will see mist and fog patchds. Maybe not quite as cold as it has been

:25:55. > :25:58.over the last few nights. Tomorrow morning, there may be a few misty

:25:59. > :26:06.patches to contend with. Th`t should left and we should see some decent

:26:07. > :26:15.bright spells develop. I don't think we will see the temperature is as

:26:16. > :26:19.warm as in the afternoon. Ftrther west, somewhere like Brampton could

:26:20. > :26:24.hit 20 Celsius. Still very pleasant but not as warm as it was today
