:00:00. > :00:00.Welcome to Look North. In the programme tonight:

:00:00. > :00:07.a sit`in at County Durham's last council`run care home,

:00:08. > :00:13.on the day its only remaining resident was due to leave.

:00:14. > :00:16.A head`on crash involving a college bus ` twelve people, includhng

:00:17. > :00:25.stallholders say they've bedn left thousands of pounds out of pocket.

:00:26. > :00:31.the message from one family, affected by meningitis.

:00:32. > :00:33.In sport, will it be David or Goliath coming

:00:34. > :00:35.up trumps on the Falcons' ndw artificial pitch?

:00:36. > :00:38.And it's apologies all round as the Magpies go on a charm offensive

:00:39. > :00:55.ahead of a game that could define their season.

:00:56. > :00:58.Ten teenagers were taken to hospital this morning, after a head`on crash

:00:59. > :01:00.between a college bus and a van in North Yorkshire.

:01:01. > :01:03.The collision happened just before 9 o'clock this morning, on a linor

:01:04. > :01:06.road close to the village of Aldbrough St John, near Darlington.

:01:07. > :01:08.Nineteen students from Darlhngton College and the town's Queen

:01:09. > :01:11.Elizabeth Sixth Form Collegd were on board. All those injured have now

:01:12. > :01:19.been discharged from hospit`l. Ian Reeve reports.

:01:20. > :01:27.The crash happened just aftdr half past eight this morning at ` narrow

:01:28. > :01:31.passing road near the North Yorkshire village of Aldbrotgh St

:01:32. > :01:38.Jon. 1916 euros and 118`year`olds were in this small coach, a daily

:01:39. > :01:43.service to Darlington College. It is early at this stage. We are doing

:01:44. > :01:48.measurement at the scene. Wd're looking at the road conditions. Both

:01:49. > :01:54.drivers will be spoken to in due course. We want to work out exactly

:01:55. > :01:59.what happened. The children were treated at the scene, with some

:02:00. > :02:06.opting to continue the journey on a minibus. Some were taken to

:02:07. > :02:16.Darlington. Injuries includd broken noses, cut lips and shock. H had a

:02:17. > :02:24.phone call and my daughter said she was shaken. When the bus was in the

:02:25. > :02:30.collision, it must have thrown them round a bit inside the vehicle. But

:02:31. > :02:35.she said she seems OK. I have actually seen walking about, so she

:02:36. > :02:38.must be all right. At middax, the coach was taken away. It will be

:02:39. > :02:47.examined as part of the investigation.

:02:48. > :02:49.The last council`run care home in County Durham is under occupation

:02:50. > :02:52.tonight. Eighty three year`old Don Robson is the last resident at

:02:53. > :02:55.Newtown House in Stanhope. He was due to move out today ` but his

:02:56. > :03:12.daughter`in`law, Michelle, had other ideas. Here's Mark Denten.

:03:13. > :03:19.The last resident is her father`in`law, Donald. She had a

:03:20. > :03:23.plan. I am supposed to be going in to collect Donald because hd is

:03:24. > :03:27.coming to live with us as p`rt of our family but I am not going to do

:03:28. > :03:33.that. I am going to occupy the house with Donald and he is aware of this.

:03:34. > :03:36.We have discussed this. He hs up for making a point to Durham Cotnty

:03:37. > :03:43.Council that this just isn't the right thing to do. Have you ever

:03:44. > :03:51.occupied anything or partichpated in direct action before? No. Up until

:03:52. > :03:55.last year, I was a special constable for Durham and was a special

:03:56. > :03:59.superintendents covering a constabulary. I'd never dond

:04:00. > :04:04.anything wrong in my life btt I just see this as worthwhile. I nded to do

:04:05. > :04:08.it. In went Michelle and thd assembled media and at the heart of

:04:09. > :04:12.it all, 83`year`old Donald Robson. I does appeal to be the last resident

:04:13. > :04:30.in this home that everyone dlse has been moved out of? Lonely. Whiny? ``

:04:31. > :04:42.why is it me? They taken evdryone else away for some reason. H was

:04:43. > :04:50.just left. Outside, his son... I am proud of what Michelle is doing She

:04:51. > :04:57.is supporting dad. We feel this is a terrible situation here and we want

:04:58. > :05:02.to Durham County Council to notice. What they did throughout thd county

:05:03. > :05:06.was a negative policy. Are fun later, Michelle appeared. Now you

:05:07. > :05:11.have done it, are you more determined to carry through to next

:05:12. > :05:17.week? I've always been determined to carry it through, yes. Unless

:05:18. > :05:20.something happens that is ott of my control. Michelle plans to occupy

:05:21. > :05:24.the building until at least next Wednesday. That is Donald's

:05:25. > :05:28.birthday. Durham Council sax they have been working with the family

:05:29. > :05:31.for two months to support them and find alternative accommodathon but

:05:32. > :05:38.it will not be possible to keep this care home open beyond the d`te

:05:39. > :05:47.advertised for its closure. Mark Denten joins me now. It is obviously

:05:48. > :05:52.sad for Mr Dobson. Is it too late? Last April, the decision was taken

:05:53. > :06:02.by Durham County Council to close their remaining care homes. The

:06:03. > :06:06.actual building will close. The last resident, due to move out today has

:06:07. > :06:10.not. We still have to sit in protest. There are staff sthll

:06:11. > :06:18.there, working until the closure date. The decision has been made but

:06:19. > :06:22.as you heard, protesters and Michelle and her family think they

:06:23. > :06:28.can make a point here. As f`r as the family is concerned, that is the key

:06:29. > :06:33.issue. What will happen to Donald? He had plans to live with hhs

:06:34. > :06:39.family. That is still the plan after this media storm has abated. And

:06:40. > :06:43.after his 84th birthday, by the way. Meanwhile, the occupation of that

:06:44. > :06:47.care home in Durham will continue. Thank you for that.

:06:48. > :06:50.They were major players in the region's drugs world, smuggling high

:06:51. > :06:53.quality cocaine into County Durham and across the North of England 12

:06:54. > :06:56.men from the North East, Ledds and Lancashire were today jailed for 57

:06:57. > :06:59.years after a million pounds worth of drugs were recovered. Sole of the

:07:00. > :07:03.gang put lives in danger after a high speed police chase through the

:07:04. > :07:10.streets of Sherburn. Stuart Whincup reports.

:07:11. > :07:21.Two occupants, speeding at 80 mph. Desperate to get away. Carrxing

:07:22. > :07:27.?300,000 worth of cocaine. High risk. High risk. Age`mac through

:07:28. > :07:36.crowded a state, the race, putting lives at risk. Eventually, they are

:07:37. > :07:43.caught. ?1 million worth of drugs is seized. This is not just about drugs

:07:44. > :07:47.and the large amount of cash taken out of circulation, it is about big

:07:48. > :07:51.business and organised crimhnals in our area. These criminals h`ve no

:07:52. > :07:56.concern for community members that they could harm in the procdss of

:07:57. > :07:59.their business. They do not care who gets hard. Timothy Lister from

:08:00. > :08:04.Consett, directed the whole operation, liaising with organised

:08:05. > :08:09.crime gangs across the North of England. Alan Crawford and Sam

:08:10. > :08:16.Turnbull, both from Durham, carried out his instructions and managed the

:08:17. > :08:20.transport. Some of the men from the north`east and other areas let while

:08:21. > :08:27.serving prison sentences at Kirklevington Prison. The jtdge said

:08:28. > :08:31.the potential profit from the lucrative sale of drugs encourages

:08:32. > :08:36.people to get involved in the trade. Trade which brings misery to local

:08:37. > :08:42.communities. The profits were so that two members of the gang were

:08:43. > :08:50.able to gamble ?1.2 million in the space of three years. The ?080, 00

:08:51. > :08:53.in cash the high`quality cocaine, shows these were major playdrs in

:08:54. > :08:57.the north`east drugs world. They were prepared to risk their own

:08:58. > :09:04.lives and those of others to avoid arrest.

:09:05. > :09:09.The debates are over. The arguments are over. The mud`slinging's over.

:09:10. > :09:12.All that counts now in the Scottish Referendum is the voting. And that's

:09:13. > :09:15.been underway since early this morning. Nobody on this sidd of the

:09:16. > :09:17.Border has any say, of course. But, as we've been reporting, evdryone

:09:18. > :09:21.living so close to the Borddr feels they will be affected in ond way or

:09:22. > :09:23.another, by the outcome. And in Berwick, England's most

:09:24. > :09:26.northerly town, they feel it more than most. That's where our

:09:27. > :09:29.Political Editor Richard Moss is tonight, as everyone waits to hear

:09:30. > :09:37.the will of the Scottish people Richard.

:09:38. > :09:49.Thank you. It is a drizzly night here in Berwick. You might be able

:09:50. > :09:56.to make out the River Tweed. We are south of the River Tweed. There are

:09:57. > :10:02.people who work and go to school here who will have a vote bdcause

:10:03. > :10:08.they often live north of thd border. Communities like Dumfries, Gretna,

:10:09. > :10:13.north of Carlisle, closely connected to Cumbria, will have a boat, while

:10:14. > :10:19.communities south of the border do not. But there is an air of

:10:20. > :10:27.expectation here. # will have a vote. Polls will remain open until

:10:28. > :10:33.ten o'clock. Then some results may start to come through in thd early

:10:34. > :10:38.hours of the morning. I will be on air later this evening. The polling

:10:39. > :10:44.restrictions will have been lifted from the media by then. We will hear

:10:45. > :10:49.from politicians to discuss the result. Thank you.

:10:50. > :10:52.Our Political Editor, Richard Moss, will be live from Berwick in our

:10:53. > :10:55.late news at 25 to 11 tonight, and reporting into the "Scotland

:10:56. > :10:57.Decides" programme, which follows it. Tomorrow morning as the final

:10:58. > :11:00.result is expected to be announced between 6 thirty and 7am

:11:01. > :11:03.` our local radio stations will have all the reaction to the refdrendum

:11:04. > :11:06.in their breakfast shows. Rdporters will be on the Border and north of

:11:07. > :11:09.it ` gauging public opinion. You can also watch and listen to all the

:11:10. > :11:13.live coverage on the BBC News website. And Look North will be live

:11:14. > :11:16.from Berwick throughout tomorrow with reaction to the vote.

:11:17. > :11:19.Other news now, and hundreds of people packed into All Soul's church

:11:20. > :11:22.in Maryport in West Cumbria today, for the funeral of Stephen Penrice `

:11:23. > :11:25.who died, after falling frol the fire`damaged pier in Eastbotrne last

:11:26. > :11:28.month. At the time, Stephen ` who was 44 and from Maryport ` was

:11:29. > :11:31.working on the south coast to help restore the famous landmark. Police

:11:32. > :11:34.believe the fire ` which destroyed the pier in July ` may have been

:11:35. > :11:41.Police have revealed how many victims they've been dealing with as

:11:42. > :11:44.part of Operation Sanctuary ` an investigation into allegations of

:11:45. > :11:47.sexual offences on Tyneside. The inquiry began in Januarx ` into

:11:48. > :11:49.allegations from vulnerable women and young girls. Northumbri` police

:11:50. > :11:52.has now revealed that almost half of the 81 potential victims were under

:11:53. > :11:55.16. To date, there have been 12 arrests as part of the oper`tion `

:11:56. > :12:05.and 21 charges. Seven cases have been dealt with at court.

:12:06. > :12:08.Traders who ran food, drink and craft stalls at a North Yorkshire

:12:09. > :12:11.music festival say they're owed thousands of pounds after the

:12:12. > :12:14.organisers ceased trading. The Galtres Parklands Festival held

:12:15. > :12:17.at Duncombe Park, near Helmsley attracted eight thousand people who

:12:18. > :12:20.came to see The Stranglers `nd The Human League among others, three

:12:21. > :12:36.It promotes itself as one of the best family festivals in thd

:12:37. > :12:41.country. Weekend tickets ard sold for ?95. Once inside, festivalgoers

:12:42. > :12:46.use a cashless electronic c`rd system to buy food or other items.

:12:47. > :12:51.Traders are then supposed to get 80% of every transaction. But this year,

:12:52. > :13:00.they have received nothing. After Galtres Parklands Festival wrote to

:13:01. > :13:03.say it had ceased trading. This man is owed ?3500 for providing food. He

:13:04. > :13:09.fears for the future of his business. I can't sustain three

:13:10. > :13:16.point ?5,000 worth of debt. I can't do it. It is really hard. Fdstival

:13:17. > :13:21.organisers have stated they want to run the festival next year `nd are

:13:22. > :13:25.looking at restructuring. The same restructuring is not a way of not

:13:26. > :13:28.being people, on the contrary, it is the firm intention to pay all

:13:29. > :13:35.suppliers in pool at the earliest opportunity. This man is owdd ? 600

:13:36. > :13:41.and is warning people not to buy tickets for next year's event.

:13:42. > :13:45.Tickets are on sale on their website now and we advise people not to buy

:13:46. > :13:49.them. As we see it, there is no way the festival will go ahead. If they

:13:50. > :13:55.do the same drivers as what they've done to us this year, their ticket

:13:56. > :13:58.money be lost. The organisers said the festival would have an hmpact on

:13:59. > :14:01.the local economy but this hs not the impact local traders envisaged.

:14:02. > :14:04.Still to come in tonight's Look North, Dawn Thewlis will be joining

:14:05. > :14:07.us with the latest sports ndws, including an apology from Ndwcastle

:14:08. > :14:08.United. And we're among the angels. The

:14:09. > :14:11.Aycliffe Angels, to be prechse. You can find out why a special

:14:12. > :14:20.tea party's been held in thdir honour.

:14:21. > :14:29.And east`west split gives a range of temperatures.

:14:30. > :14:32.Meningitis is a disease that can strike without warning and kills one

:14:33. > :14:35.in ten. Now, one family frol County Durham has been marking "Meningitis

:14:36. > :14:38.Awareness Week" by sharing the story of their son, Robbie. He lost both

:14:39. > :14:42.his legs, and the fingertips of his left hand to the disease in 200 .

:14:43. > :14:44.They're warning other parents of the symptoms to look out for.

:14:45. > :15:03.At just 23 months old, Robbhe Jones was given a 5% chance of survival.

:15:04. > :15:05.He had both his legs and thd fingertips of his left hand

:15:06. > :15:11.amputated after contracting meningitis. He actually died three

:15:12. > :15:18.times while in hospital. Thdy rang us twice because they said he would

:15:19. > :15:24.have only minutes. But he thought to be here. He was fitted with his

:15:25. > :15:28.first set of artificial legs, a new beginning. Five years later, he is

:15:29. > :15:32.football mad and has been celebrating his eighth birthday

:15:33. > :15:39.testing out new football boots together with his new legs. He asked

:15:40. > :15:43.me what my favourite team w`s and I said Manchester United. He `sked if

:15:44. > :15:53.I wanted that on my legs and I said yes. Have you had a chance to show

:15:54. > :15:58.your friends your new legs? Yes They say they are all right.

:15:59. > :16:00.Robbie's family are marking Meningitis Awareness Week bx

:16:01. > :16:08.advising others to the Millhe Knight themselves with the symptoms and to

:16:09. > :16:16.act fast. `` to familiarise themselves. Even if people `re

:16:17. > :16:21.unsure, if you see any signs or symptoms, take them straight to

:16:22. > :16:29.hospital. Don't even make a doctors appointment. They can be de`d within

:16:30. > :16:33.four hours. It is the rush, the bruise like Macs that Robbid had.

:16:34. > :16:41.Sickness, the bright lights and hearing. Robbie's missing fhngers

:16:42. > :16:46.and toes are the devastating effects of meningitis. We just want anyone

:16:47. > :16:55.else to go through what we went through. `` we just don't w`nt.

:16:56. > :16:59.Good luck to Robbie. And thdre's good news for another youngster

:17:00. > :17:01.affected by meningitis. Earlier this week we reported that

:17:02. > :17:03.Tilly Lockey's specially`ad`pted disabled bike had been stoldn from

:17:04. > :17:06.the family's garage at the weekend. Tilly, a meningitis survivor, was

:17:07. > :17:08.devastated by the theft frol her home in Blackhill in County Durham.

:17:09. > :17:12.But the Police have recoverdd the bike and returned it to her. Three

:17:13. > :17:15.men and one woman, all from the Derwentside area, were arrested in

:17:16. > :17:17.connection with the burglarx ` two of them have since been bailed

:17:18. > :17:26.The war time efforts of thotsands of women have been recognised today, at

:17:27. > :17:28.a special tea party in County Durham. The "Aycliffe Angels" ran

:17:29. > :17:30.the town's munitions factorx during the Second World War.

:17:31. > :17:41.Phil Connell was invited to meet them.

:17:42. > :17:49.Who was in charge at you thdn? Stories go back 74 years to the

:17:50. > :17:53.munitions factory really worked during the Second World War. Today,

:17:54. > :17:57.they are just 19 surviving lembers of the Aycliffe Angels. This

:17:58. > :18:00.afternoon, many gathered for afternoon tea to mark their

:18:01. > :18:07.outstanding contribution to Britain's wartime effort. Mx husband

:18:08. > :18:13.was in the forces a long wax away. I felt I was doing my little bit.

:18:14. > :18:19.That's all you can do. The other women engineers in the making..

:18:20. > :18:24.During the war, the munitions threes played a crucial role. The female

:18:25. > :18:31.workforce worked in often d`ngerous conditions. How dangerous w`s at in

:18:32. > :18:37.these factories? Very dangerous People lost fingers. I remelber one

:18:38. > :18:45.person who lost her third fhnger on her left hand. When she got married,

:18:46. > :18:50.she could not put a ring on there. The efforts of the Aycliffe Angels

:18:51. > :18:55.has been recognised with thhs stone statue. A project by a school in

:18:56. > :18:59.Bishop Auckland has now re`hgnited interest in what they did. The

:19:00. > :19:06.school is today hosting an `fternoon of tea, take and conversation. The

:19:07. > :19:10.tea party's most distinguished guest was County Durham's Lord Lidutenant,

:19:11. > :19:14.who described the party is one of the most special she had attended.

:19:15. > :19:21.When you think of what they meet. This lady told me she just lade

:19:22. > :19:27.detonators. Just! That is a considerable contribution, hsn't

:19:28. > :19:32.it, to the war effort. For the Aycliffe Angels it has been a day to

:19:33. > :19:32.remember. There are stories still engaging a very different

:19:33. > :19:50.generation. A fine hat, that! A big weekend coming up for

:19:51. > :19:54.Newcastle. Yes. Jon Carver has apologised persuading at a group of

:19:55. > :19:58.fans protesting against Alan Pardew at the Southampton game at the

:19:59. > :20:02.weekend. Andy Woodman has also said sorry for inappropriate comlent on

:20:03. > :20:05.social media. With the magphes bottom of the Premier Leagud, the

:20:06. > :20:11.manager is under increasing pressure but is determined to front tp and

:20:12. > :20:14.take the team forward. Before kick`off, Jon Carver asked ` group

:20:15. > :20:18.of fans to take down banners calling for Alan Pardew to be sacked. He

:20:19. > :20:25.felt the words distractinglx players. They went on to suffer a

:20:26. > :20:29.4`0 thrashing. The confront`tion led to complaints from supporters and

:20:30. > :20:35.today issued an apology. I was met with abuse from one supportdr and I

:20:36. > :20:51.apologise. This is a guy who loves and lives

:20:52. > :20:56.and breathes his football club. He has black and white blood. Xou think

:20:57. > :21:00.he wants to see the manager banners going up and the negativity going

:21:01. > :21:05.towards the team? Of course not He tried to defend it, albeit hn the

:21:06. > :21:10.way Jon Carver does, which hs that way and he has apologised for that

:21:11. > :21:15.kind of slightly aggressive approach, because that is all it

:21:16. > :21:24.was. Messages of support continued to pour in for a midfield player

:21:25. > :21:29.being treated for testicular cancer. Alan Pardew kept the news qtiet at

:21:30. > :21:35.the family's request. I think it would have been a shock to the

:21:36. > :21:40.players. We have not discussed it yet but we will bring it up at one

:21:41. > :21:44.of our meetings. It is an elotional situation for me. I really hope that

:21:45. > :21:50.the comes back sooner rather than later. Indeed. Tomorrow, we will

:21:51. > :21:53.hear from Alan Pardew or on the pressure he is under edge of

:21:54. > :22:02.protests planned by fans at Saturday's home game against Hull.

:22:03. > :22:05.And tomorrow we'll hear frol Alan Pardew on the pressure he's under
