:00:25. > :00:26.him around like a rag doll. Frankly, a smaller person, a smaller build

:00:40. > :00:42.who retired at the weekend. As one manager keeps his job we talk

:00:43. > :00:49.to another who's taken over And Gareth Breeses to victory to

:00:50. > :00:57.go out on a high with cup whnners, A man has been left with serious arm

:00:58. > :01:09.injuries after being mauled It happened last night

:01:10. > :01:16.in the village of High Pitthngton. Both dogs are believed to

:01:17. > :01:18.be American Bulldogs. One has been destroyed, while the

:01:19. > :01:20.other is in police kennels tntil Priors Grange, a quiet residential

:01:21. > :01:28.estate in High Pittington. But last night neighbours wdre

:01:29. > :01:30.disturbed by horrifying scrdams A 47`year`old neighbour being mauled

:01:31. > :01:36.in the street by his own dogs. His arm is said to

:01:37. > :01:50.have been savaged. He was being attacked by his dogs.

:01:51. > :01:56.They kept the attack going for quite a while. They ripped his close. They

:01:57. > :02:05.were chucking him around like a rag doll. Frankly, a smaller person or a

:02:06. > :02:10.child would not have survivdd. I am very shaken. I cannot concentrate. I

:02:11. > :02:16.have got a Nexus size class and I got there and I thought, I cannot

:02:17. > :02:22.switch the iron. `` an exercise class. It was horrible to w`tch

:02:23. > :02:29.Lots of courageous people wdre outside. With umbrellas and golf

:02:30. > :02:33.clubs. They tried to get thd dogs off. People brought their c`rs out

:02:34. > :02:35.and tried to run them over with cars to get them off the poor man

:02:36. > :02:40.concerned. But to no avail. Police managed to contain one

:02:41. > :02:42.of the dogs at the scene. Aside from marks on the pavdment,

:02:43. > :02:53.little sign today of the horror The second dog was trade shortly

:02:54. > :02:58.afterwards to this area, half a mile from where the attack took place.

:02:59. > :03:02.Officers said it was put down humanely at around 11 o'clock last

:03:03. > :03:07.night. Praise from the local community. We are very thankful that

:03:08. > :03:10.people came out and helped ` man that was injured on the grotnd.

:03:11. > :03:16.Without their involvement it could have been a very different story.

:03:17. > :03:21.Credit to those people. I hope they understand the depth of feeling from

:03:22. > :03:24.ourselves and the family. So horrendous an attack that police

:03:25. > :03:28.have offered counselling for people that saw what happened. The man

:03:29. > :03:37.remains with serious injurids in hospital.

:03:38. > :03:40.A major search has been launched after a couple waded

:03:41. > :03:43.into the sea off the coast at Sunderland to rescue thehr dog.

:03:44. > :03:46.The woman has been recovered but the coastguard and police are

:03:47. > :03:53.We'll have an update in our late news at 10.25.

:03:54. > :03:57.The number of illegal tips being closed down in the North East has

:03:58. > :04:00.But people living close to these unlicensed waste disposal operators

:04:01. > :04:04.say the authorities are far too slow to act, and leave them living

:04:05. > :04:09.Inside Out's Chris Jackson has this exclusive report:

:04:10. > :04:15.Tonnes of plaster being dumped. They are treading the waste into the

:04:16. > :04:19.ground. One of dozens of waxs in which these operators illeg`lly

:04:20. > :04:26.tipped rubbish and they are paid many thousands of pounds to dispose

:04:27. > :04:31.of it. This company operated from three other sites in County Durham.

:04:32. > :04:36.They have a massive illegal dump on this industrial estate. Thotsands of

:04:37. > :04:42.tonnes of rotting, stinking waste. It was the height of the buhlding.

:04:43. > :04:47.As far out as this fence. The smell, the flies and rats, it was `wful.

:04:48. > :04:52.Tens of thousands of tonnes of waste brought to various sites on the

:04:53. > :04:58.pretence of King recycled. But what we saw was it was just stockpiled.

:04:59. > :05:03.Not processed. And left to rot. These people are greedy. Do not beat

:05:04. > :05:10.around the bush. That is whx people commit crime. Waste disposal is

:05:11. > :05:13.lucrative. The law caught up with the company and the man behhnd the

:05:14. > :05:19.firm was given an 18 month prison sentence. The residence that insured

:05:20. > :05:25.living next to the legal tips said it took far too long to bring him to

:05:26. > :05:30.book. `` put up with. It went on too long. It beggars belief. How were

:05:31. > :05:36.they allowed to continue? I am still bitter. We work as quickly `s we

:05:37. > :05:42.possibly can to mediate these problems. But sometimes these things

:05:43. > :05:45.cannot be rectified overnight. The environment agency said in the last

:05:46. > :05:54.two years the number of leg`l tips closed down has doubled. `` illegal

:05:55. > :05:59.tips. More about that tonight at half past seven on BBC One.

:06:00. > :06:03.It was to be a temporary protest to make a point.

:06:04. > :06:05.But now relatives of an 83`year`old man who are staging

:06:06. > :06:08.a sit`in protest at a Countx Durham care home say they're staying put.

:06:09. > :06:10.Indeed, they won't leave until the council

:06:11. > :06:14.Don Robson was supposed to leave Newtown House in Stanhope

:06:15. > :06:31.A former headteacher, his f`mily said he has finally become ` rebel

:06:32. > :06:35.at the age of 83. He and his daughter`in`law are the onlx people

:06:36. > :06:39.left in this house. He said he did not want to be a troublemakdr but he

:06:40. > :06:47.just does not want to leave the home he loves. I do not particul`rly like

:06:48. > :06:51.it at all. I do not think there will be anywhere that is as good. In fact

:06:52. > :07:25.I know there will not be anxwhere as good. I am positive of that.

:07:26. > :07:28.spending clashes, we have got to reduce the budget. We have to move

:07:29. > :07:34.to a new model of doing things. We cannot afford it any more. Lichelle

:07:35. > :07:36.had plans to end the peaceftl process on Wednesday after his 4th

:07:37. > :09:07.Officially, they will issue what is birthday. Now they said thex

:09:08. > :09:10.Officially, they will issue what is a constitutional convention. Some

:09:11. > :09:15.delegates, including the le`der of Newcastle Council wants to know what

:09:16. > :09:22.that will mean and they want some powers for the north`east rdceipt

:09:23. > :09:27.sharply. Newcastle is one of the eight big core cities outside

:09:28. > :09:29.London. We have set out ways in which we could devolve

:09:30. > :09:35.responsibility is straightaway. What I would like is to work on the same

:09:36. > :09:41.timetable and Scotland. Bec`use frankly it is too important an issue

:09:42. > :09:45.to kick it into the long gr`ss. But not all Labour politicians wants to

:09:46. > :09:49.move as quickly. I think thdy will all want extra powers for the North.

:09:50. > :09:54.They will look at all of thd constitutional reform including

:09:55. > :09:57.Newcastle North MP. Rushing into it like a knee jerk reaction to the

:09:58. > :10:02.Referendum in Scotland I thhnk would be a mistake. We must make sure that

:10:03. > :10:06.whatever is decided that is right for areas like the north`east

:10:07. > :10:11.actually comes from the people of the north`east. That it is not a

:10:12. > :10:14.mandate from Westminster as to how Westminster believes it shotld be

:10:15. > :10:21.done. Some disagreements about welfare? Yes, there. Ed Balls said

:10:22. > :10:28.that Labour would only incrdase child benefit by 1% until 2017. One

:10:29. > :10:35.year longer than the coalithon. That is not popular with some MPs,

:10:36. > :10:40.including the MP for walls back `` once back. This is one of the

:10:41. > :10:50.richest economies in the world. `` this MP. Three out of five people,

:10:51. > :10:56.children are living in poverty. That have not got a square meal to go to

:10:57. > :11:04.school with. And Ed Miliband has his big speech tomorrow. Yes, it is all

:11:05. > :11:08.this constitutional stuff. He will try and inspire his supportdrs and

:11:09. > :11:10.headed towards that general election, which of course is next

:11:11. > :11:14.May. Thank you. Well, besides the leaders

:11:15. > :11:16.of the main political partids, there was another group of people

:11:17. > :11:19.who were mightily relieved by They're traders in the Tyne valley

:11:20. > :11:23.town of Haltwhistle, which larkets It's a claim they couldn't have made

:11:24. > :11:27.if Scotland had become Peter Harris reports

:11:28. > :11:32.from Haltwhistle: It's an area with a history

:11:33. > :11:35.of conflict. A town once burned down

:11:36. > :11:43.by the notorious gangs of the border reevers has strvived

:11:44. > :11:45.another threat from the Scots. Had they gone independent,

:11:46. > :12:00.Haltwhistle would lose its claim to It would have meant the shop front,

:12:01. > :12:07.the balm, the station, that would have... We would have two h`ve

:12:08. > :12:12.changed. The battle for the centre ground has caught international

:12:13. > :12:17.attention. They were prepardd for desperate measures. What wotld you

:12:18. > :12:21.have done if they went independent? This is the centre. The war would

:12:22. > :12:26.have been built back up. Thd machine gun would have been on top. The

:12:27. > :12:32.claim to be the centre does involve a bit of spin, but at the hotel

:12:33. > :12:36.this hotel owner is convincdd. Equities to and from the centre of

:12:37. > :12:43.Wales, Northern Ireland and Scotland from the centre of Britain. `` equal

:12:44. > :12:48.distance. It would have reconfigured the UK and moved the centre south.

:12:49. > :12:55.This town is defined. It saxs it is the true centre. `` defiant. We

:12:56. > :13:02.recognise the centre of the country. All of the other places fadd out

:13:03. > :13:05.into oblivion. Even with thd UK intact, the title of the centre of

:13:06. > :13:10.Great Britain will remain contentious, it depends how it is

:13:11. > :13:14.calculated but at least it hs an important way of bringing in tourism

:13:15. > :13:20.for a town like this. It is the best thing that has happened in this

:13:21. > :13:25.town. It is good to have th`t label. With the Scots staying put they can

:13:26. > :13:33.lay claim to being the centre ground for another generation at ldast

:13:34. > :13:36.On to sport, but not football obviously, because we're gohng

:13:37. > :13:40.What a year it's been for the region's county cricket

:13:41. > :13:43.teams, with the championship title going to Yorkshire, and now

:13:44. > :13:47.It's been a terrific summer, hasn't it?

:13:48. > :13:50.And what a way for Jamaican all`rounder Gareth Breese to end

:13:51. > :13:53.his Durham career, by scoring the winning runs at Lord's.

:13:54. > :14:01.It was the perfect end to a nail`biting day's play.

:14:02. > :14:10.They have been here before but it is still only their second Lord's cup

:14:11. > :14:13.final in their short historx. No floodlights in 2007. No way play

:14:14. > :14:18.would have started without them this time. It was a bad toss to lose as

:14:19. > :14:22.Warwickshire quickly found out. Wickets fell on a regular b`sis and

:14:23. > :14:27.runs were hard to come by. The Durham effort was shared. C`lum

:14:28. > :14:32.MacLeod taking a magnificent catch. Gareth Breese was never far from the

:14:33. > :14:36.action. A couple of catches and three wickets. He had already been

:14:37. > :14:40.told his contract would not be renewed at the end of the sdason.

:14:41. > :14:45.The end of the Warwickshire innings and just 165 on the board. Surely a

:14:46. > :14:49.cue for a comfortable victory? But they lost Phil Mustard in the

:14:50. > :14:54.opening over, who lifted thd first one`day trophy. Under the grey skies

:14:55. > :14:57.it became a battle of nerves. Ben Stokes smashed a record rathng

:14:58. > :15:02.century to get through the semifinal. But this called for a

:15:03. > :15:07.cool head. If luck was on their side occasionally, they certainlx earned

:15:08. > :15:10.it. Gareth Breese came to the crease with Durham in a dangerous

:15:11. > :15:15.position. They inched towards the target, before the all`rounder put

:15:16. > :15:20.it in just the right place for the winning boundary. They said the

:15:21. > :15:24.script was written for him to be there as the end and that is how it

:15:25. > :15:30.pans out. It was a bit tensd but they got the 21 is required and the

:15:31. > :15:35.nerves settled a little bit. `` 20 runs. I am thrilled for him to

:15:36. > :15:39.finish his career like he dhd today. I do not know what is coming next

:15:40. > :15:43.for me. I would like to hopdfully be involved in cricket and we will see

:15:44. > :15:51.what happens. If it is farewell what a way to finish. If it is, it

:15:52. > :15:55.cannot get any better. And H gather a good night was had by all. The

:15:56. > :15:59.Jamaican rum would be prettx potent. On to football and a team whth

:16:00. > :16:02.a new manager, not talking `bout Newcastle United, of course, because

:16:03. > :16:05.their old one's still there. No, we're talking about new Carlisle

:16:06. > :16:09.boss, Keith Curle, who met the media today, having seen his side set a

:16:10. > :16:13.new club record of 15 leagud games without a win, but the Cumbrians did

:16:14. > :16:16.at least put up a fight, after going three down to Mansfield

:16:17. > :16:18.before half`time. Curle took over on Friday whth

:16:19. > :16:20.assistant Colin West, the ex`Sunderland striker who w`s number

:16:21. > :16:25.two to Chris Turner at Hartlepool. They had planned to take a back seat

:16:26. > :16:29.for this one, but Curle had his say They pulled two back,

:16:30. > :16:33.couldn't find an equaliser, though But the boss is hoping

:16:34. > :16:47.to turn things around. My job now is I need to cre`te away,

:16:48. > :16:51.how everybody in the club, the community, can get on board. We want

:16:52. > :16:57.attractive and attacking football. We need to know what we can call

:16:58. > :17:03.upon. You can ask anybody to do something I do not think thdy can

:17:04. > :17:05.do. We need to get points. H need to turn a squad into 18. And good luck

:17:06. > :17:10.to him and I think he might need it. Well, Sunderland are three places

:17:11. > :17:13.but just one point better off than Newcastle and it w`s

:17:14. > :17:27.a pretty uninspiring perforlance Alan Pardew would be relievdd that

:17:28. > :17:37.the protest did not happen. Some banners were confiscated but it was

:17:38. > :17:42.mainly directed at Mike Ashley. Steve Rees, the man that might

:17:43. > :17:48.replace him. We never know. They were a couple of cracking goals My

:17:49. > :17:54.sons would call them worldlx. And what about that one. You cannot do

:17:55. > :17:59.much about that. Alan Pardew thinking it will not be his day

:18:00. > :18:02.Papiss Cisse should not havd been playing according to medical advice

:18:03. > :18:09.and he scored twice. His first since March and he direct did `` dedicated

:18:10. > :18:15.it to a player that is having cancer treatment. And the sunshine came

:18:16. > :18:22.out. One point for them but some fans, they are still not too

:18:23. > :18:27.pleased. The one`time we thought we would get beat, it would be today to

:18:28. > :18:32.get him out. They more or ldss took a neutral position. I think they

:18:33. > :18:36.just took a view of loving their club and just see what happdns. I

:18:37. > :18:41.think we did enough on the pitch to win some friends. I do not think he

:18:42. > :18:46.is up to the job. I do not blame him for the players. That is down to

:18:47. > :18:51.Mike Ashley. But he has not done his best with what he has got. H do not

:18:52. > :18:56.think it is good, to be hondst. We are not doing well. I would keep him

:18:57. > :19:03.on. Give him a chance. Not good enough. No. Papiss Cisse, brilliant,

:19:04. > :19:08.but more must be done. He whll not have a press conference ahe`d of the

:19:09. > :19:12.cup game against Crystal Palace Staying out of the limelight.

:19:13. > :19:14.Well, Sunderland are three places but just one point better

:19:15. > :19:17.off than Newcastle and it w`s a pretty uninspiring perforlance

:19:18. > :19:20.Yes, and Gus Poyet must havd targeted this one

:19:21. > :19:23.against the Premier League new boys but they're still looking for their

:19:24. > :19:26.first three points of the sdason in what was a pretty scrappx game.

:19:27. > :19:29.Jack Rodwell at least getting a shot on target

:19:30. > :19:41.and on the plus side The Bl`ck Cats did keep their first clean sheet.

:19:42. > :19:46.At least another draw. But they are not winning many. Crystal P`lace,

:19:47. > :19:48.Leicester, West Bromwich, I think they will have to be worried they

:19:49. > :19:53.have not got that first win. So, Sunderland and Newcastld, along

:19:54. > :19:56.with Burnley, the only teams without Call me a pessimist but it's already

:19:57. > :20:01.looking like a long season `head! However,

:20:02. > :20:08.it's looking considerably brighter on Teesside, where Middlesbrough are

:20:09. > :20:10.up to fifth in the Championship Yes, whisper it quietly, Boro are

:20:11. > :20:13.just three points off the top of Could this be the season thdy

:20:14. > :20:18.finally get out of the Championship? Yet another goal from captahn

:20:19. > :20:20.Grant Leadbitter, who's alrdady equalled his tally from last season,

:20:21. > :20:24.six in his last seven games. Aitor Karanka's summer signhngs seem

:20:25. > :20:26.to have gelled well, a great move from Jelle Vossen and

:20:27. > :20:30.Emilio Nsue saw Albert Adom`h score This header made it

:20:31. > :20:37.a memorable first start for young striker Patrick B`mford

:20:38. > :20:41.on loan from Chelsea. Even the loss of Dean Whitehead sent

:20:42. > :20:44.off for this tackle didn't deter Boro as substitute Kite camd

:20:45. > :20:47.on to make it four and that's Boro's But in League Two it's all looking

:20:48. > :20:55.a bit desperate. Hartlepool are only one place better

:20:56. > :20:57.off than bottom club Carlisle Fans understandably unhappy

:20:58. > :21:03.but a lack of money for new players is a big problem

:21:04. > :21:07.for Pools, Colin Cooper has a huge And York City aren't much bdtter

:21:08. > :21:14.off, 19th They scored two through skipper

:21:15. > :21:22.Russel Penn and Dave Winfield but were always behind against

:21:23. > :21:30.Phil Brown's Southend. On to rugby now

:21:31. > :21:33.and a disappointing weekend for our Newcastle Falcons were

:21:34. > :21:35.comprehensively beaten The Premiership champions scored

:21:36. > :21:43.three tries in the first 20 minutes and although the Falcons put in a

:21:44. > :21:46.much better second half performance with Noah Cato touching down for

:21:47. > :21:49.Newcastle's only try, it's their 19th league defeat in a row,

:21:50. > :21:52.and it looks like being another And in rugby league's Champhonship 1

:21:53. > :21:58.Gateshead Thunder's promotion hopes came to an end after losing

:21:59. > :22:00.by 50`6 to Hunslet Hawks. York City Knights will now face

:22:01. > :22:03.the Hawks for a place Now, she says she owes him

:22:04. > :22:16.everything, a horse that's taken her to the Olympics,

:22:17. > :22:17.World and European championships. At the weekend, though,

:22:18. > :22:20.there were tearful scenes in North Yorkshire as Northalldrton's

:22:21. > :22:22.Nicola Wilson retired her f`mous Phil Connell was there

:22:23. > :22:31.to capture the emotion. You are such a clever boy. Not many

:22:32. > :22:38.become legends and national treasures. Art with Nicola Wilson,

:22:39. > :22:44.Buzz has become just that. @t the weekend, now aged 17, he was retired

:22:45. > :22:51.from competitive life. A te`rful day for the crowd at the horse trials,

:22:52. > :22:56.and of course his devoted rhder It is quite emotional. How could it not

:22:57. > :23:02.be? He has been phenomenal `nd taken us all over the world. And we owe it

:23:03. > :23:09.to him to do it right. I do not think I could do this, you know

:23:10. > :23:20.What makes him special? I al going to go for a walk! He has won

:23:21. > :23:25.Olympic, world and European titles. Known as a reliable trailbl`zer for
