:00:00. > :00:00.Hello and welcome to Monday's Look North. Tonight:

:00:00. > :00:09.Bitten by a venomous spider ` how this woman had to have a finger

:00:10. > :00:17.amputated after being attacked by a false widow.

:00:18. > :00:24.The pain was something I have never been through in my life. By the time

:00:25. > :00:28.I got to hospital, the fingdr was burst open. They told us if I had

:00:29. > :00:29.been two hours later I would have been dead.

:00:30. > :00:32.Stay safe when you're out on the town. The message to thousands of

:00:33. > :00:36.university students after a series of deaths in the North's rivers

:00:37. > :00:38.Dealing with our nuclear waste stockpile ` can we learn anxthing

:00:39. > :00:42.from the American experiencd? A special report coming up.

:00:43. > :00:46.Newcastle are still winless and head to Stoke with even the owner jesting

:00:47. > :00:52.And an instant impact for Ctrle as Carlisle pick up their first win of

:00:53. > :01:10.Doctors told her she was just two hours from death. Andrea Wallace

:01:11. > :01:14.from Seaham in County Durhal was bitten by a spider ` and it was an

:01:15. > :01:17.attack that left her with a flesh eating bug. Andrea says it was like

:01:18. > :01:20.living through a horror movhe as the poison ran through her veins. The

:01:21. > :01:23.44`year`old had to have one of her fingers amputated and after ten

:01:24. > :01:25.weeks of treatment, she's now been discharged from hospital.

:01:26. > :01:36.Andrea had been playing with her children when she was bitten on her

:01:37. > :01:40.finger. At first she thought it was a midge bite. But the pain became

:01:41. > :01:43.unbearable. She'd been bittdn by one of these ` a false widow spider,

:01:44. > :01:46.which was carrying a flesh dating bug. Doctors told Andrea shd was

:01:47. > :02:01.The pain with something likd I have never been through in my life. By

:02:02. > :02:08.the time I got to hospital, my finger was burst open. The pass was

:02:09. > :02:15.changing colour. It was horrendous. I also had a red mark at me an pet

:02:16. > :02:20.by the time I got to hospit`l. They said if I had been two hours later,

:02:21. > :02:24.I'd have been dead. Within `n hour of arriving at hospital, shd was

:02:25. > :02:29.rushed into surgery as doctors try to stop the poison spreading from

:02:30. > :02:35.her hand up her arm. She spdnt ten weeks in hospital and underwent 14

:02:36. > :02:39.separate operations before doctors said they could not save her finger.

:02:40. > :02:44.Despite her injuries, experts say the false widow is not conshdered

:02:45. > :02:49.dangerous. Experts stress hdr problems were caused not by the bait

:02:50. > :02:56.by the flesh eating bug it passed on. The bite it gives is mahnly

:02:57. > :03:01.defensive. There is a greatdr chance of dying of a wasp or be sedn. But

:03:02. > :03:06.it is very uncomfortable and the swelling can get to the sizd of a

:03:07. > :03:10.tennis ball. Andrea is the hairdresser and says she dotbts she

:03:11. > :03:14.will work again. As she recovers, she still believes she has been

:03:15. > :03:16.lucky. I feel as though it hs a small price to pay to lose ` finger

:03:17. > :03:25.because I could have lost mx life. Stay safe when you're out on the

:03:26. > :03:28.town. That's the message to thousands of students across the

:03:29. > :03:30.North as universities resumd after the long summer break. Alre`dy this

:03:31. > :03:33.year five young people have lost their lives in our rivers. Now

:03:34. > :03:36.officials are using freshers' week to warm students of the dangers of

:03:37. > :03:39.going near the water after drinking alcohol. Phil Connell is live for us

:03:40. > :04:00.in York tonight. Here, the river is one of the

:04:01. > :04:03.city's biggest attractions. This year, they represent the making

:04:04. > :04:07.headlines for the wrong reasons Three deaths so far this ye`r and

:04:08. > :04:11.with thousands of students now arriving in the city, offichals are

:04:12. > :04:20.keen to ensure they are now more needless tragedies. The winner gets

:04:21. > :04:28.an iPad... A friendly welcole to the start of the academic year. In York,

:04:29. > :04:33.it is freshers' week. For m`ny students, the first taste of

:04:34. > :04:36.freedom. There are no parents to stop you doing anything. I could

:04:37. > :04:45.have gone out until the AM hf I wanted. It is that sense of freedom.

:04:46. > :04:50.`` three o'clock in the morning If you're drunk, anything can happen.

:04:51. > :04:53.One tradition of freshers' week is to introduce students to thd city's

:04:54. > :04:59.bars and clubs but this week in your, there is a serious message.

:05:00. > :05:05.The dangers of the rivers and the tragic stories that have cole all

:05:06. > :05:09.too familiar. In 2014, the rivers here have claimed the lives of the

:05:10. > :05:13.people. Megan Roberts was 20 years old and a student at York St Jon

:05:14. > :05:18.University. There have been similar tragedies in Durham. This rhver

:05:19. > :05:24.claimed the lives of students this year. You will have been out and in

:05:25. > :05:29.the pubs, you will have nothced there is a large river runnhng

:05:30. > :05:34.through the centre. In some cases, alcohol was thought to contribute.

:05:35. > :05:41.In York today, student safety officers were using freshers' week

:05:42. > :05:49.to make students more aware. We use figures from the emergency services

:05:50. > :05:53.to show that if you end up hn the river, it is not very forgiving It

:05:54. > :06:04.makes you realise it is verx serious. I think we will st`y well

:06:05. > :06:10.away from the river. Similar advice is also being given in Durh`m this

:06:11. > :06:13.week. 2014 was a tragic year from which it is hoped important lessons

:06:14. > :06:20.will not be learned. An important lesson indeed. What

:06:21. > :06:28.else is being done to help prevent the loss of lives? It is an issue

:06:29. > :06:30.the council and police and University are taking seriotsly

:06:31. > :06:36.They have been looking at solutions to us. One idea is to have ` patrol

:06:37. > :06:39.boat on the river at certain busy times of the week. Another

:06:40. > :06:44.suggestion is to perhaps fends off certain parts of the river, like

:06:45. > :06:49.this, to make it more securd. One recurring theme in all of this, it's

:06:50. > :06:53.how we make young people drhnk more sensibly and to that end, b`rs here

:06:54. > :06:59.in York are on the lookout for that kind of thing. Student union members

:07:00. > :07:01.will be in the city to help young people, who may be slightly worse

:07:02. > :07:05.for wear. Thanks for that. Next year, the Government is due to

:07:06. > :07:09.make a key decision about what to do with a dangerous by`product of

:07:10. > :07:11.nuclear power generation. At the moment, Sellafield in West Cumbria

:07:12. > :07:13.houses the world's biggest civil stockpile of plutonium. It's

:07:14. > :07:16.estimated there'll be 140 tonnes of the highly`radioactive material by

:07:17. > :07:18.2020. The long`term options include burial or ` the Government's

:07:19. > :07:20.preferred route ` converting the fuel for use in the next generation

:07:21. > :09:17.of nuclear stations. But as Chris workers in running nuclear projects.

:09:18. > :09:19.The advice for Cumbria... It seems to me they are not falling what is

:09:20. > :09:24.happening in the United States. It is as if they have no knowlddge of

:09:25. > :09:29.the mass of problems here. Xou might have a feeling of deja vu, watching

:09:30. > :09:35.this. In 2011, Sellafield controversially closed its own

:09:36. > :09:40.plant, costing millions of pounds. Three years later, there is talk of

:09:41. > :09:42.building another one. I havd been trying to speak to someone from the

:09:43. > :09:47.Department of Energy and Clhmate Change. But in the last few months,

:09:48. > :09:51.no one was available to answer questions on camera. The Government

:09:52. > :09:58.has elected to the agency responsible for nuclear waste to

:09:59. > :10:01.explain. I will not say that the service was a success. We nded to

:10:02. > :10:06.learn the lessons from that project. We went to America and one of the

:10:07. > :10:15.critics they said what is h`ppening here. Are you? Absolutely. We work

:10:16. > :10:18.closely with the US Departmdnt of energy and talk to them regtlarly.

:10:19. > :10:22.We are learning a lot from them You're correct that recent history

:10:23. > :10:27.suggests building the plant can be challenging. Can you stand here

:10:28. > :10:35.today and tell me it will not cost a penny more than you think? Ht is a

:10:36. > :10:40.handful of billions of pounds for any of the options. The Govdrnment

:10:41. > :10:45.will make a decision on what to do next year. Meanwhile, the Sdllafield

:10:46. > :10:47.plutonium stockpile, contintes to grow.

:10:48. > :10:49.And you can see what advice the American nuclear workers have for

:10:50. > :10:56.the people of Cumbria on Inside Out, here on BBC One tonight at 7:30pm.

:10:57. > :10:59.A 22`year`old man is still hn police custody following the death of a man

:11:00. > :11:02.in North Tyneside. The dead man s been named as Uriel Moskwa, who was

:11:03. > :11:06.43 and lived in North Shields. He was found in Aldwych Drive hn the

:11:07. > :11:09.town on Saturday, with a st`b wound to the thigh. Two other men and a

:11:10. > :11:17.A roller`coaster in North Yorkshire had to be closed after it hht a

:11:18. > :11:21.deer. Passengers on the ridd ` at Lightwater Valley near Ripon ` were

:11:22. > :11:23.unhurt, but some were left with blood on their clothing. Thd animal

:11:24. > :11:26.was killed instantly after being struck by the "Ultimate Trahn"

:11:27. > :11:32.roller`coaster ride on Saturday morning.

:11:33. > :11:35.There've been plenty of big speeches at the Conservative party conference

:11:36. > :11:37.today ` including one by thd Chancellor, George Osborne. But one

:11:38. > :11:40.unexpected star attraction was a former Northern Rock worker from

:11:41. > :11:42.Newcastle. Paul Bunyan told delegates life ` for him ` had

:11:43. > :11:45.improved under the coalition. Our political editor, Richard Moss, is

:11:46. > :11:59.at conference and a short while ago I asked him what Mr Bunyan had said.

:12:00. > :12:06.P2P conference back to 2008 when he was working in the Newcastld branch

:12:07. > :12:12.of northern rock. He had to deal with those massive queues pdople can

:12:13. > :12:16.remember from that time. His insecurity was whether he would keep

:12:17. > :12:24.his job. He is now married `nd happy and working for virgin monex. He was

:12:25. > :12:27.delighted to take George Osborne around his branch because hd thinks

:12:28. > :12:33.Government policy is to be thanked for his own position at the position

:12:34. > :12:36.of the economy. I was delighted It seemed fitting that the company most

:12:37. > :12:40.people associate with the start of the financial crisis had bedn

:12:41. > :12:43.transformed into the companx that the Chancellor visited on the day

:12:44. > :12:54.was officially confirmed our economy was bouncing back. A positive

:12:55. > :12:57.mention for virgin money. Btt George Osborne saw this as music to his

:12:58. > :13:04.ears. He returned the favour by mentioning pol in his speech. He

:13:05. > :13:10.knows because seven years ago he was working in northern rock. Hd watched

:13:11. > :13:13.the queues of people desper`te to withdraw savings before the bank

:13:14. > :13:25.collapsed. He saw Britain on the brink and he says we must ndver go

:13:26. > :13:31.back and so do we. One Northern Star at virgin today. What powers might

:13:32. > :13:41.the Conservatives offer at the North to compete with Scotland? That has

:13:42. > :13:43.been the discussion here. After the Independence Referendum. George

:13:44. > :13:51.Osborne mentioned he would pass on further powers to England btt was

:13:52. > :13:56.not specific. Cumbrian MP, Rory Stewart, believes Boris Johnson

:13:57. > :14:03.style mayor 's for counties and cities is a good idea. I thhnk we

:14:04. > :14:10.can learn from the United States. People are very proud to be merits

:14:11. > :14:16.and governors of states. I think that would be a more satisfxing job.

:14:17. > :14:23.People working for four days in Westminster and the days in their

:14:24. > :14:30.constituency could in this way focus on local areas. There is mention of

:14:31. > :14:38.railway lines today. Yes. There was a mention of a plan to upgr`de the

:14:39. > :14:43.A1. Also, the East Coast Mahn Line. The idea is to re`privatise it to

:14:44. > :14:46.improve services. There has been a lot of scepticism from Labotr and

:14:47. > :14:50.the trade unions, who believe the opposite. Tomorrow, attention will

:14:51. > :14:55.turn to Boris Johnson, Mayor of London. That should be interesting.

:14:56. > :14:59.Health bosses in Cumbria have promised the West Cumberland

:15:00. > :15:02.Hospital has a secure futurd. They say when a new hospital opens in

:15:03. > :15:05.Whitehaven next year, it will have an A department and will still

:15:06. > :15:08.treat the vast majority of patients in West Cumbria. They do, however,

:15:09. > :15:10.accept problems remain with acute medical services ` because the

:15:11. > :15:13.hospital no longer has any junior doctors. A public meeting to discuss

:15:14. > :15:23.the hospital's future is behng held in Whitehaven tonight.

:15:24. > :15:31.I am looking forward to meeting the staff and public. I want to assure

:15:32. > :15:36.them that our hospitals are making great progress and that we have

:15:37. > :15:40.improved our outcomes by making the changes we have made. And that we

:15:41. > :15:43.have every intention of keeping open intensive care, A and a whde range

:15:44. > :15:46.of services. And BBC Radio Cumbria will have more

:15:47. > :15:49.on that story in their breakfast show with Mike Zeller, tomorrow

:15:50. > :15:54.morning from 6:30am. A new drug treatment for brdast

:15:55. > :15:57.cancer ` trialled at the Frdeman Hospital in Newcastle ` has been

:15:58. > :16:00.shown to extend patients' lhves by up to five years. The trials ` on

:16:01. > :16:03.women with advanced HER2`positive breast cancer ` were conducted at

:16:04. > :16:06.the Northern Cancer Care Centre The drug is now available on thd NHS in

:16:07. > :16:18.England, via the Cancer Drugs Fund. In a sense, we have turned breast

:16:19. > :16:26.cancer from a disease which kills people supposedly quickly into a

:16:27. > :16:31.disease where even those with the disease, no measure it in ydars not

:16:32. > :16:34.weeks and months as it used to be. On to sport now, and on a Monday

:16:35. > :16:39.night ` that means "Team Talk". Top marks to new Carlisle m`nager

:16:40. > :16:42.Keith Curle ` the Blues picking up their first win of the season. But

:16:43. > :16:45.for once it's Newcastle owndr Mike As a rule he doesn't give interviews

:16:46. > :16:53.to anybody ` not just us ` but a newspaper reporter who caught him

:16:54. > :16:56.outside a pub in London's Soho at the weekend was given a world

:16:57. > :16:58.exclusive. He apparently told Ashley who he was, asked for an interview

:16:59. > :17:02."on the record" ` and the M`gpies' owner reportedly said if Unhted lose

:17:03. > :17:04.at Stoke tonight, then manager Alan Pardew is: "Dead. Finished. Over.

:17:05. > :17:13.One more game and that's it." Interesting that he recentlx banned

:17:14. > :17:16.a couple of newspapers from St James's Park for suggesting

:17:17. > :17:18.something similar! When the story broke, Ashley's lawyer clailed his

:17:19. > :17:21.client's response was "tongte in cheek" and that he'd been

:17:22. > :17:34."humouring" the reporter. Hhlarious. I have been under pressure `t this

:17:35. > :17:38.club for a number of weeks. All I can focus on is the team and that is

:17:39. > :17:44.what I will do. Sometimes things are taken out of context. You know, if

:17:45. > :17:48.it was a sit down interview any serious manner, I would be lore

:17:49. > :17:52.concerned than I am today. For sure. You have to be focused on your

:17:53. > :18:00.goals. We have a simple goal, that is Monday night. We want to get a

:18:01. > :18:01.win. Down to ten men in extra time on Wednesday, that spirit shows we

:18:02. > :18:02.are fighting. Full match commentary from the

:18:03. > :18:07.Britannia Stadium on BBC Newcastle. And it's Stoke who're next tp for

:18:08. > :18:10.Sunderland ` like the Magpids, still looking for their first League win

:18:11. > :18:13.of the season, because it's now five draws and one defeat in six

:18:14. > :18:31.matches. You get these games sometimds.

:18:32. > :18:39.Sunderland had better chancds but just could not score. Five league

:18:40. > :18:47.goals so far this season. It is just not happening for them. Everything

:18:48. > :18:54.this player touched last ye`r when Tim and that is not happening now.

:18:55. > :19:04.After this performance, that will not stop a second yellow and a read.

:19:05. > :19:22.Steven Fletcher hasn't scordd since last Christmas. What does hd see

:19:23. > :19:28.here? Probably don't. We had a lot of chances. We tried from corners

:19:29. > :19:40.and free kicks and crosses. We only missed one or two goals. I `m

:19:41. > :19:41.convinced this is the way. H would worry if there was fighting but

:19:42. > :19:45.we're in the game the time. In the Championship,

:19:46. > :19:47.Middlesbrough couldn't quitd make it Which is a shame because thdy could

:19:48. > :19:52.have jumped up to third place. Some tired legs

:19:53. > :19:56.after that incredible cup m`tch For Albert Adomah,

:19:57. > :20:02.who missed the penalty that handed the Merseysiders victory,

:20:03. > :20:04.it wasn't the best of weeks. Although the Ghanian very ndarly

:20:05. > :20:06.gave Boro the lead before Boro certainly had plenty

:20:07. > :20:10.of chances ` and some fans thought this one from Patrick Bamford had

:20:11. > :20:15.initially gone in... But it wasn't all Boro `

:20:16. > :20:18.Charlton had their fair share This incident saw Adomah sent

:20:19. > :20:21.off for a second yellow card. Pretty much both to blame

:20:22. > :20:29.for that one, I would have thought! Boro then had to fend off a late

:20:30. > :20:32.onslaught at The Valley ` btt fend it off they did to earn a v`luable

:20:33. > :20:36.point ` and another perform`nce of which Aitor Karanka was justifiably

:20:37. > :20:38.proud. And Hartlepool boss Colin Cooper was satisfied with hhs team's

:20:39. > :20:41.point against Portsmouth as the sides drew 0`0 at Victoria Park for

:20:42. > :20:44.the third consecutive season. The visitors had the best of thd chances

:20:45. > :20:47.and Pools are still strugglhng to find that cutting edge in front of

:20:48. > :20:50.goal, but they did at least keep a clean sheet. The result movds them

:20:51. > :20:53.out of the relegation zone but And worrying times for York City

:20:54. > :21:03.manager Nigel Worthington as his side dropped to fourth bottom ` just

:21:04. > :21:06.a point above Hartlepool following defeat to Dagenham and Redbridge. It

:21:07. > :21:09.might have been different if any of these early efforts had gond in but

:21:10. > :21:13.two goals from Joss Labadie sealed the result to take the Daggdrs above

:21:14. > :21:20.the Minstermen. Well, we've saved the best of

:21:21. > :21:25.the Football League until l`st. And not the first time the

:21:26. > :21:28.appointment of a new manager has had We're talking of course abott Keith

:21:29. > :21:32.Curle, who replaced Graham Kavanagh at Carlisle ` cleared everything out

:21:33. > :21:34.of the manager's office and his clean sweep had an hnspiring

:21:35. > :21:37.effect on the pitch as well. In the first half,

:21:38. > :21:40.there were several decent chances for the home side, who hadn't won

:21:41. > :21:44.in the league for 15 matches. The all`important only goal of

:21:45. > :21:47.the game came when David Amoo got on Tranmere guilty of missing chances

:21:48. > :21:54.as well ? couldn't find an dqualiser They're still bottom

:21:55. > :21:58.but closing the gap on the likes of Hartlepool and York ` who also

:21:59. > :22:11.find themselves in trouble. It is a little bit fragile. The

:22:12. > :22:16.players needed that bit of belief in themselves. We know where wd are.

:22:17. > :22:20.The players needed that performance. That gives us something

:22:21. > :22:22.to build on. Away from football, only defeats

:22:23. > :22:25.to report for both rugby codes? Yes ` in rugby league there was huge

:22:26. > :22:29.disappointment for York Citx Knights who failed to make it through to the

:22:30. > :22:32.Championship 1 playoff Grand Final And there was yet another ddfeat for

:22:33. > :22:37.Newcastle Falcons in rugby tnion's Premiership which takes thehr

:22:38. > :22:42.winless run in the league to 20 Juan Pablo Socino was relathvely

:22:43. > :22:45.successful with the boot and on the up side they are scoring tries

:22:46. > :22:48.` scrum half Ruki Tipuna sctrrying across the line to make the half
