:00:00. > 3:59:59We did not want to hear that. That is

:00:00. > :00:07.bring this once famous outdoor pool back to life.

:00:08. > :00:08.Hello and welcome to Monday's Look North.

:00:09. > :00:10.In the headlines tonight: Battling Bradley Lowery

:00:11. > :00:14.could be a record breaker - 200,000 Christmas cards have been

:00:15. > :00:21.And a song for Bradley is storming up the download charts.

:00:22. > :00:23.Could it be the Christmas Number One?

:00:24. > :00:25.Silent Night at York Minster as the unholy ding dong

:00:26. > :00:30.with the ringers means no Christmas bells.

:00:31. > :00:35.And pooling their resources - The community paying to transform

:00:36. > :00:40.In tonight's Team Talk, it's been a winning weekend for most

:00:41. > :00:44.So plenty of Christmas cheer for Boro's elves

:00:45. > :00:58.and Sunderland's Santas - as well as their managers!!

:00:59. > :01:01.Last week he was a star on the pitch when Sunderland took on Chelsea.

:01:02. > :01:04.Last night he was a guest of honour at the BBC's

:01:05. > :01:10.Sports Personality of the Year event.

:01:11. > :01:13.Bradley Lowery is the County Durham youngster with a rare form of cancer

:01:14. > :01:15.who's received lorry-loads of Christmas cards from well-wishers

:01:16. > :01:20.and is on track to receive 200,000 cards and parcels!

:01:21. > :01:23.The five-year-old from Blackhall was diagnosed with neuroblastoma

:01:24. > :01:26.in 2013, and has undergone years of intensive cancer treatment.

:01:27. > :01:41.Bradley Lowery's story has seen an outpouring of affection. The

:01:42. > :01:46.five-year-old with a rare cancer, a guest at last week's Sunderland

:01:47. > :01:50.match and today more evidence of how people have been touched. Tens of

:01:51. > :01:55.thousands of cards and parcels passing through Hartlepool's sorting

:01:56. > :02:04.office. A wave of warmth destined for Bradley -- Bradley. Bradley has

:02:05. > :02:09.200,000 and it has added to the Christmas spirit. It has been really

:02:10. > :02:16.good and he has reached everybody's hard. The atmosphere and the office

:02:17. > :02:24.and everybody here, the staff have been wonderful. Lynn has encouraged

:02:25. > :02:30.this tending -- the sending of cards but is overwhelmed. We didn't expect

:02:31. > :02:34.it to be this big. The response has been fantastic. We have had them

:02:35. > :02:44.from all over the world, from China, Belgium. They have the huge

:02:45. > :02:50.campaign. Australia, USA. On top of the cards, ?850,000 has been raised.

:02:51. > :02:55.Its original aim was to send Bradley to America for treatment. That may

:02:56. > :02:59.yet happen but the New Year will see him start a new course of treatment

:03:00. > :03:03.here in the UK and if his tumour shrinks, he could yet be America

:03:04. > :03:09.bound. For now, it is a Christmas like any other for Bradley. Born up

:03:10. > :03:11.on a compassion that transcends the region. A message willing him to be

:03:12. > :03:19.in festive good health and beyond. And two sisters from Hartlepool

:03:20. > :03:21.are hoping to raise as much money as they can for Bradley this

:03:22. > :03:24.Christmas with a song they've "Our Superhero - A Christmas Wish"

:03:25. > :03:28.is proving to be a big hit for sisters Olivia and Georgia

:03:29. > :03:36.in the download charts. But they'd appreciate a final surge

:03:37. > :03:39.of support to raise even Phil Chapman went to see them

:03:40. > :03:52.at their home studio. Thank you everybody for the cards

:03:53. > :03:59.and presents and money. Merry Christmas. Bolivia and Georgia have

:04:00. > :04:03.written countless songs together in recent years but Bradley's story has

:04:04. > :04:13.inspired them to write an extra special tune released just in time

:04:14. > :04:17.for Christmas. # Christmas Eve, standing next to

:04:18. > :04:25.the fireplace, children playing with the same smile on their face. Week

:04:26. > :04:31.came in and started writing and it all came together in half an hour

:04:32. > :04:35.and it all felt right. It was all about Bradley, super heroes. He

:04:36. > :04:41.inspires us. He is so brave and we thought that was the best subject to

:04:42. > :04:48.make him the superhero. The sisters will be performing best song here at

:04:49. > :04:56.the Middleton Grange shopping centre on Thursday between 12 and one.

:04:57. > :05:03.# DuBois the definition of a superhero. -- you are the

:05:04. > :05:06.definition. We were so excited that it had reached the charts and when

:05:07. > :05:11.it dropped to 14 in the afternoon, we realised it was possible and the

:05:12. > :05:18.girls, they've worked hard and we've all worked hard trying to get it out

:05:19. > :05:21.there. The formation is behind Bradley and we could get him to

:05:22. > :05:39.number one if everybody was to download it.

:05:40. > :05:40.Newcastle University says it will investigate the death

:05:41. > :05:44.of a 20-year-old student who died after drinking too much alcohol.

:05:45. > :05:47.Ed Farmer was in his first term at the university.

:05:48. > :05:50.He passed away in the Royal Victoria Infirmary on Wednesday.

:05:51. > :05:56.Police say he arrived at the hospital in a life-threatening

:05:57. > :05:58.condition after drinking an excessive amount of alcohol.

:05:59. > :06:01.The University says it's saddened by the news and says once

:06:02. > :06:06.the Coroner establishes the facts, it'll take any appropriate action.

:06:07. > :06:08.Four people are being held by police investigating the murder

:06:09. > :06:11.He's been named as 29-year-old Mark Shaw.

:06:12. > :06:15.His body was discovered in a house in Grange Villa

:06:16. > :06:19.near Chester-le-Street on Saturday night.

:06:20. > :06:24.Four people in their late teens and early 20's were arrested

:06:25. > :06:27.in connection with his murder, all of whom knew the victim.

:06:28. > :06:31.The cause of death is as a result of a single stab wound but I can't

:06:32. > :06:34.say that this was a prolonged and vicious attack and that he has

:06:35. > :06:40.It is important that anybody who has any information comes forward

:06:41. > :06:43.so that we can get these people off the streets.

:06:44. > :06:46.It's the last day of consultation on drastic changes to health

:06:47. > :06:48.services in Cumbria and people are still being urged

:06:49. > :06:52.More than 3,000 people have had their say on the controversial

:06:53. > :06:55.proposals which could see a downgrading of services

:06:56. > :06:58.at the West Cumberland Hospital and a change to the running

:06:59. > :07:02.The consultation ends at midnight tonight after months

:07:03. > :07:12.It's been a year of firey meetings, public protests and fear

:07:13. > :07:20.about the future of health care in Cumbria.

:07:21. > :07:25.This has to be everybody's number one priority in fighting those

:07:26. > :07:29.changes because it is going to cost lives.

:07:30. > :07:30.This document is at the centre of the debate.

:07:31. > :07:32.With a focus on making services safer, most of the preferred options

:07:33. > :07:35.would see a downgrading of services at the West Cumberland hospital.

:07:36. > :07:37.Services like childrens and maternity, meaning some mums

:07:38. > :07:44.could have to travel 40 plus miles in labour.

:07:45. > :07:55.If ladies have to be transferred over and because of that mothers and

:07:56. > :07:56.babies may die. If they suffer foetal servers -- foetal distress,

:07:57. > :07:59.they could be brain damaged. with the loss of inpatient beds

:08:00. > :08:13.suggested in Alston, We are in dire circumstances and our

:08:14. > :08:14.lives matter as much as anybody in Penrith or Carlisle or Manchester or

:08:15. > :08:17.London. Those in charge say they've listened

:08:18. > :08:19.to the views expressed they insist decisions haven't been

:08:20. > :08:21.made and the changes discussed Instead we're told this

:08:22. > :08:35.is about making sure services The public consultation hasn't been

:08:36. > :08:38.a referendum, is -- it isn't voting on the favourite and is. There are

:08:39. > :08:43.some underlying problems with the services. The inability to recruit

:08:44. > :08:48.specialist staff. That problem is not going to go away. It is a

:08:49. > :08:52.national problem affecting lots of parts of the country and we have to

:08:53. > :08:54.look at the long-term safety of the services as well as the immediate

:08:55. > :08:56.opinion of the public. online with postal submissions

:08:57. > :08:59.being accepted until Friday. The decisions will be

:09:00. > :09:02.announced in March next year. A vicar's warning that fines

:09:03. > :09:07.introduced to tackle begging in South Tyneside could lead to many

:09:08. > :09:11.homeless people going Father Chris Fuller says good

:09:12. > :09:15.Samaritans will stop giving food to the most vulnerable members

:09:16. > :09:17.of the community. But the local authority stresses it

:09:18. > :09:20.isn't targeting those This drop in cafe

:09:21. > :09:39.at St Hilda's Church in South Shields is a lifeline

:09:40. > :09:42.for people like him. He's spent time living

:09:43. > :09:44.on the streets. Accepting food from

:09:45. > :09:48.strangers was part of life. He's angry that a simple act

:09:49. > :10:07.of kindness can now result It is outrageous, put it that way.

:10:08. > :10:08.It is like people taking money off the poor and making the rich,

:10:09. > :10:10.richer. Public Spaces Protection

:10:11. > :10:11.orders of PSPOs were South Tyneside council was concerned

:10:12. > :10:15.about street drinking But the vicar here at St Hilda's

:10:16. > :10:20.says the most vulnerable could now be punished for accepting food

:10:21. > :10:23.from strangers and that's not good Some of these people will have

:10:24. > :10:34.somewhere to live but don't stay They find themselves

:10:35. > :10:39.on the street and hungry because they haven't got

:10:40. > :10:41.the facilites for cooking Some written warnings have

:10:42. > :10:48.been sent to people. However, South Tyneside

:10:49. > :10:50.council says it has taken Joanne Carter,

:10:51. > :10:57.BBC Look North, South Shields. The bells at York Minster

:10:58. > :10:59.will remain silent this Christmas, despite last ditch attempts

:11:00. > :11:03.by the church authorities to recruit The 30 bell ringers

:11:04. > :11:08.at the Minster were sacked in October and told they had

:11:09. > :11:26.to re-apply for their jobs over The bells have been heard since

:11:27. > :11:31.1361. In October, the Dean stopped its 30 volunteer workers from

:11:32. > :11:35.working over concerns about safeguarding and vetting procedures.

:11:36. > :11:40.The BBC understands bell-ringing from -- bell-ringers from elsewhere

:11:41. > :11:45.were asked to stand and that finding trained volunteers is not easy. It

:11:46. > :11:48.depends on the willingness of other ringers to come forward when they

:11:49. > :11:54.have their own responsibilities to fulfil at that own churches and how

:11:55. > :12:00.the Minister approaches it and whether they are willing to get some

:12:01. > :12:04.of their own ringers back in as part of the Christmas team. One

:12:05. > :12:08.experienced bell-ringer told look North it is likely anybody would

:12:09. > :12:14.take up what he described as a poisoned chalice and ring at the

:12:15. > :12:18.Minster. They are not commenting about the latest developments in

:12:19. > :12:22.this increasingly bitter dispute and stop a source close to them that

:12:23. > :12:27.they would be prepared to come in and ring the bells if the Minster

:12:28. > :12:31.has a change of heart. Locals and tourists in York expressed

:12:32. > :12:36.disappointment than bells are likely to remain silent on Christmas Day.

:12:37. > :12:40.It will be sad for everybody. A lot of visitors come here and they will

:12:41. > :12:46.be expecting to hear the bells the Christmas. It will be sad if they

:12:47. > :12:52.don't ring any more. It is important. Tradition, nice

:12:53. > :12:58.Christmas. You would like to hear the bells? Yes, it is beautiful.

:12:59. > :13:01.Love to hear them. You always and stop -- you always stop and listen

:13:02. > :13:25.for the bells. Especially at Christmas time.

:13:26. > :13:31.Unless there is a quick resolution to the dispute, it seems the

:13:32. > :13:36.Minster's famous appeal will not be heard over the city for the first

:13:37. > :13:45.time in years this Christmas. Jeff has team talk coming up and

:13:46. > :13:50.pooling their resources, community shareholders plan to revive a

:13:51. > :13:54.seaside outdoor swimming pool. It is looking less like a white Christmas

:13:55. > :13:56.and more like a wet and windy one. I will have the full forecast late in

:13:57. > :14:00.the programme. Now, for 70 years it

:14:01. > :14:01.brought tourists flocking to Tynemouth and was well loved

:14:02. > :14:04.by local people too. Tynemouth's outdoor sea water pool

:14:05. > :14:07.had magnificent views of Longsands Beach,

:14:08. > :14:09.even if the water was But for the last 20

:14:10. > :14:18.years it's been closed. Now though, there are plans

:14:19. > :14:20.for a new pool costing Here's our News

:14:21. > :14:26.Correspondent Mark Denten. From the mid 1920's onwards it often

:14:27. > :14:36.happened at the town's outdoor Up to the early 90's the place

:14:37. > :14:47.was a top local attraction. It looks rather sad today. More I

:14:48. > :14:51.saw them tourist attraction. The Al bought -- outdoor pool has been

:14:52. > :14:56.closed for 20 years. It was hit by more people deciding they wanted to

:14:57. > :15:00.take holidays in places like the Mediterranean rather than in the UK.

:15:01. > :15:03.Could this place be heading for a new start?

:15:04. > :15:05.And could that new start look like this?

:15:06. > :15:10.Campaigners want to bring the pool back 21st century style.

:15:11. > :15:17.It'll be a vibrant space, somewhere where you can look down and think it

:15:18. > :15:20.looks amazing. It'll be somewhere that people will want to visit.

:15:21. > :15:23.A grant application to the coastal communities fund's planned.

:15:24. > :15:25.A community share offer will let people put money in too.

:15:26. > :15:33.Over ?300,000 has already been promised.

:15:34. > :15:40.There is no maximum and minimum limit for investing. You can put

:15:41. > :15:43.whatever you want in. We have had some large pledges and small

:15:44. > :15:45.prejudice. The average amount is around ?400.

:15:46. > :15:47.The plans were welcomed by beach walkers today, some

:15:48. > :16:00.When you went to the beach, you went into the poor rather than you'd pay

:16:01. > :16:04.your couple of pence to get in. Confess now, everybody knows! What

:16:05. > :16:06.are your memories of the pool? Freezing cold.

:16:07. > :16:08.This time we're assured it'll be heated.

:16:09. > :16:11.If all goes to plan the pool could reopen in three years' time.

:16:12. > :16:16.Mark Denten, BBC Look North, Tynemouth.

:16:17. > :16:23.I would love to have the first swim in that. I have said it. Now it is

:16:24. > :16:27.time for a round-up of the sport action.

:16:28. > :16:30.Plenty of festive football cheer at the weekend -

:16:31. > :16:32.one of those rare occasions when most of our teams

:16:33. > :16:37.The fans love Christmas because the games come thick and fast -

:16:38. > :16:44.how is it for the players, Steve?

:16:45. > :16:49.It is part of the job and hectic park of the year.

:16:50. > :16:51.In the Premier League, Sunderland can enjoy Christmas week,

:16:52. > :16:54.And Middlesbrough are up to 14th after a Christmas Karanka

:16:55. > :17:11.They are so much more positive. Good play here from Ramirez. He bides a

:17:12. > :17:18.bit of time and beads and intelligent ball in. Com and

:17:19. > :17:24.components. Superb. He doubled it with a nicely taken penalty. It is

:17:25. > :17:29.important that they make the most of the home games. You mentioned his

:17:30. > :17:37.confidence there. A big plus for Middlesbrough. Back in form. It was

:17:38. > :17:42.the best win of the season. We said they needed to take the shackles off

:17:43. > :17:47.and they look to be doing this. They looked more positive. Wonderful ball

:17:48. > :17:49.here in. Middlesbrough need to keep this going. They have quite an

:17:50. > :18:01.inviting run of fixtures now. I am really happy and doubled my

:18:02. > :18:07.goal is the last few years. I am really happy and more happy that I

:18:08. > :18:16.could contribute to the team win. It has been our biggest one. Some days

:18:17. > :18:22.it is football and we play really well. Sometimes we have lost those

:18:23. > :18:28.other games and today, we were playing in a good way and we won

:18:29. > :18:33.3-0. I am really pleased because we had good game today.

:18:34. > :18:36.So, a big win for Middlesbrough, and an equally important one

:18:37. > :18:38.for Sunderland, at home to Watford - who beat Boro at the Rriverside

:18:39. > :18:42.Plenty of Christmas cheer at the Stadium of Light -

:18:43. > :18:44.skipper Jermain Defoe giving a warm welcome back to defender

:18:45. > :18:47.Younis Kaboul - who mysteriously left the club early in the season.

:18:48. > :18:49.And even a smile from the assistant when he was taken out

:18:50. > :18:55.Not so happy - Watford boss Walter Mazzarri.

:18:56. > :19:12.So important to score. Don't know how he missed that! The left back is

:19:13. > :19:21.turning out to be one of the best attackers. He is unlucky not to

:19:22. > :19:28.score there. What is he doing playing centre forward? He realises

:19:29. > :19:33.Jermain Defoe isn't going to score there. Jordan Pickford starring yet

:19:34. > :19:42.again. Recovers well and makes a good blog. The issue is can

:19:43. > :19:47.Sunderland keep hold of him? Clean sheet, very important.

:19:48. > :20:01.As soon as I scored the goal, we didn't want to get a goal behind. We

:20:02. > :20:04.kept a clean sheet. It was a must win today. Especially over the

:20:05. > :20:10.Christmas period, we have some tough games. The player has done great

:20:11. > :20:11.today. A bit ugly at times. Three points were the big things that we

:20:12. > :20:13.needed. So this is how the table

:20:14. > :20:14.looks - Sunderland off Boro four points

:20:15. > :20:17.above the drop zone. Nearly at the midway point, Steve -

:20:18. > :20:28.what do you think? West Ham and Leicester are in false

:20:29. > :20:31.positions. Sunderland have the big experience to get out of it. Burnley

:20:32. > :20:33.will struggle but have got themselves back in the mix.

:20:34. > :20:35.In the Championship, Newcastle couldn't be doing better

:20:36. > :20:38.than they are at the moment - they're in the number

:20:39. > :20:39.one spot for Christmas, guaranteed by a hard-earned

:20:40. > :20:48.Dwight Gayle getting them off the mark!

:20:49. > :21:00.Rafer Benitez, his first visit. So important to them. He is really

:21:01. > :21:08.positive and some days it doesn't come off. Richie does well and waits

:21:09. > :21:12.for music. Is that an own goal? One for the dubious goals committee,

:21:13. > :21:18.definitely. Burton straight back into wet. Newcastle, mentally and

:21:19. > :21:24.physically, they look very strong. We see an example of this. It is a

:21:25. > :21:28.fine finish. Shaping it ran the goalkeeper. Took a battering in the

:21:29. > :21:34.second half. Showing that resilience. They are a strong side.

:21:35. > :21:39.You mentioned that resilience there that you need. Two games in the

:21:40. > :21:45.week. Didn't play well in both. Two big winds to keep on top of the

:21:46. > :21:52.league. It is looking like a two horse race. Newcastle at the top.

:21:53. > :21:55.Brian, is that to you fancy? Yes, I think they'll go up. If they were to

:21:56. > :22:01.go up, I would be very happy. In League Two, Hartlepool upset

:22:02. > :22:03.the odds - and a few punters, I would imagine -

:22:04. > :22:05.by picking up a point at Portsmouth. Keith Curle will enjoy

:22:06. > :22:08.watching this one again, even if it wasn't Christmas,

:22:09. > :22:11.we'd still call this goal a real cracker

:22:12. > :22:23.from defender Shaun Brisley - It completely deceived the

:22:24. > :22:33.goalkeeper. Time and time again, we see quality delivers from Carlisle.

:22:34. > :22:38.Sitting pretty. Showed resilience because they conceded in the second

:22:39. > :22:43.half. This is how the table locks and they are looking good. Seven

:22:44. > :22:54.points clear. Good opportunity for them. What a great point. Worst

:22:55. > :23:00.defensive record in the league. A long ride herd made better on the

:23:01. > :23:06.back of a clean sheet. Six teams sharing two points between them. To
