:01:48. > :01:52.Celsius, torrential rain. In Dubai, 25 degrees, glorious nonstop
:01:53. > :01:57.sunshine. Very different places, but they are connected, because an
:01:58. > :02:00.organisation based in Dubai owns the AEI Cables factory, which is just up
:02:01. > :02:08.the end of the high streets down there. The company had sales last
:02:09. > :02:12.year of ?1.2 billion, and yet, it wants to not pay redundancy payments
:02:13. > :02:19.through a legal move. As my colleague Adrian Pitches reports,

:02:21. > :02:23.North East England has seen a meltdown in manufacturing
:02:24. > :02:26.We've lost our mines, our steelworks, our shipyards.
:02:27. > :02:29.AEI Cables is just the latest casualty, albeit a company that has
:02:30. > :02:35.And the loss of the cable workers' jobs will be felt
:02:36. > :02:41.In the small town of Birtley, other businesses will also suffer,
:02:42. > :02:49.the businesses that rely on AEI and its workers for their custom.
:02:50. > :02:59.Quite a bit from AEI. We do deliver to them as well, a couple of times a
:03:00. > :03:03.day. The ones on different shifts, but wheels have them coming in the
:03:04. > :03:06.shop all the time, so it will be a massive impact for us.
:03:07. > :03:10.I think it is absolutely disgusting. People's livelihoods that have been

:03:24. > :03:27.are they going to do? I think, yes, there are a lot of
:03:28. > :03:33.people going back over generations of the same family who have worked
:03:34. > :03:36.at AEI Cables. People who live locally in Birtley, but also in the

:04:17. > :04:18.Tough times ahead by the sounds of it.
:04:19. > :04:23.Mark, the unions at AEI Cables have had more to say tonight?
:04:24. > :04:31.Yes, in a strongly worded statement, the GMB have issued a statement this
:04:32. > :04:36.afternoon. It says that the Dubai group as a callous group for local
:04:37. > :04:39.people. -- a callous disregard. They are concerned that the land on which
:04:40. > :04:45.the factory stands could be sold, and that could raise the money for
:04:46. > :04:48.redundancies for the staff. No interview from either ten macro or
:04:49. > :04:52.their parent group today, but we understand there will be a' meeting,
:04:53. > :04:54.where a decision will be made whether to go for the Company
:04:55. > :04:58.voluntary arrangement, which would allow the company to not pay those
:04:59. > :05:06.redundancy payments. Those skilled jobs, then, for many people tonight,

:07:07. > :07:10.was no pulse or breath. Hair colour was terrible. She was purple. To see
:07:11. > :07:15.her again today is fantastic. I spoke to the youngest one and said,
:07:16. > :07:22.what did you get for Christmas? And she said, my mum. When she said
:07:23. > :07:26.that, it was just too much. You know, the fact that they had a
:07:27. > :07:30.defibrillator and knew how to use it and recognise she was in cardiac
:07:31. > :07:34.arrest, I think they deserve a huge amount of recognition and praise for
:07:35. > :07:38.that. We do it as a job, and that is our everyday thing, but for them to
:07:39. > :07:41.see that and know what to do and act on it, I think they deserve a lot of

:09:10. > :09:11.to children's and maternity Recruiting and retaining senior
:09:12. > :09:14.staff is a major challenge, which is leaving hospitals

:09:18. > :09:20.launched a recruitment video to persuade other professionals
:09:21. > :09:23.to move to Cumbria, Generally, if your doctor recommends
:09:24. > :09:42.a course of action, you listen. I started my nurse training in this
:09:43. > :09:45.trust in 2002, found it to be a really friendly and supportive place
:09:46. > :09:51.to work, so I stayed here ever since. Did my degree and then my

:09:56. > :09:58.Only in this video, they're appealing to colleagues to come
:09:59. > :10:05.What will turn to do with the video is to promote Cumbria as a place to
:10:06. > :10:10.live and work. -- what we're trying to do. To live and work, to study,
:10:11. > :10:12.to bring up your families, and to live and work across both the

:10:19. > :10:24.The trust, which remains in special measures, is under a special resume
:10:25. > :10:26.appointed by the government, and has acknowledged retaining and
:10:27. > :10:31.recruiting staff is among the most difficult in the whole of the NHS.
:10:32. > :10:34.In this video is to make a distance, -- a difference, the question is, is
:10:35. > :10:37.it too late? This is just one initiative, so I
:10:38. > :10:40.don't think it is too late. We have been using other initiatives and
:10:41. > :10:43.recruitment campaigns. We have been looking at reward packages for
:10:44. > :10:46.consultants to come and live and work in Cumbria, but this campaign
:10:47. > :10:50.and all the others we have been doing are made to bring in
:10:51. > :10:53.consultants to work permanently within the trust. That is the aim of
:10:54. > :10:55.it. Don't just come to Cumbria for a
:10:56. > :10:56.holiday. Come to stay. It's hoped the video can help
:10:57. > :10:58.attract consultants, doctors and nurses to sites
:10:59. > :11:10.across north and west Cumbria. And to another lovely part of the
:11:11. > :11:12.region now. It's a tourist destination known
:11:13. > :11:14.for its beauty and tranquillity. But in the north Yorkshire
:11:15. > :11:16.market town of Hawes, the peace has been shattered
:11:17. > :11:18.after holidaymakers accused one local shopkeeper
:11:19. > :11:20.of being "rude and offensive." Steve Bloom, the owner
:11:21. > :11:24.of Bloomindales Bookshop, He claims it's his right and says
:11:25. > :11:41.the money goes to charity. It is the book shop with certain
:11:42. > :11:45.rules. But in the market town of Hawes, some believe Steve Bloom's
:11:46. > :11:49.customer service is falling short. John Blackie, the leader of the
:11:50. > :11:51.parish council, has received 20 letters of complaint.
:11:52. > :11:57.And this is typical of one of the letters that we have received. Let
:11:58. > :12:01.me just read a paragraph. Personally, I found the man's
:12:02. > :12:04.attitude most offensive, and I am sure it will reflect on the town's
:12:05. > :12:07.businesses. Have you bought anything here
:12:08. > :12:10.before? No, we came here about five years
:12:11. > :12:14.ago. I will tell you how it works. It is
:12:15. > :12:17.50p to come in. And it is this more entry charge
:12:18. > :12:20.that has made things less than civil here, with some customers refusing
:12:21. > :12:24.to pay. A lot of what gets categorised as
:12:25. > :12:29.rudeness is simply me asking for the 50p, doing what I am doing. From the
:12:30. > :12:33.point of view of someone who doesn't want to pay it, he says, what, I'm
:12:34. > :12:37.not paying 50p to go in a shop, if you were to stop them on the street
:12:38. > :12:41.outside, they were probably say that I had been rude to them.
:12:42. > :12:45.The owners of the building say Mr Bloom has not breached any terms and
:12:46. > :12:48.conditions, though in the village, comparisons are now being drawn to a
:12:49. > :12:52.certain Fawlty Towers. If you want to charge people,
:12:53. > :12:54.Ferrer, but it is the way you treat people.
:12:55. > :12:59.If the disease shop, he can do. It is a bit maybe.
:13:00. > :13:02.-- if it is his shop. The damage to our reputation in the
:13:03. > :13:04.wider world is quite considerable, and it comes at a time when enough
:13:05. > :13:09.is enough. It is my shop, it is my little
:13:10. > :13:16.world. This is my little world, I run it, I am comfortable with people
:13:17. > :13:19.coming in and appreciating it, and I feel it is my right.
:13:20. > :13:22.The council hopes peace can still be restored here, with Steve agreeing
:13:23. > :13:26.to display a sign telling customers what to expect.
:13:27. > :13:28.Plenty more to come in tonight's Look North.
:13:29. > :13:30.Dawn's here with a look ahead to the weekend sport,

:13:57. > :13:59.coming to an end after Sunderland Football Club confirmed
:14:00. > :14:02.today there would be no more concerts at the Stadium of Light
:14:03. > :14:04.for the foreseeable future. Bruce Springsteen, Oasis
:14:05. > :14:06.and Take That have all performed there in recent years,
:14:07. > :14:28.as Stuart Whincup reports. It has hosted some of the biggest

:14:33. > :14:34.football club confirming there will be no more music concerts at the
:14:35. > :14:37.Stadium of Light for the foreseeable future.
:14:38. > :14:40.I have been to a couple of them myself in my time. They were
:14:41. > :14:44.fantastic, but I think if we are a football club, the first thing is
:14:45. > :14:48.you do the right thing for the football team. I think it will
:14:49. > :14:52.hopefully allow us to have some preseason games, maybe a small

:14:55. > :14:58.Just last month, Sunderland City Council announced it was removing
:14:59. > :15:02.its financial support for the concerts. The decision was made
:15:03. > :15:06.after the Conservative group revealed the council had paid a
:15:07. > :15:09.football club ?400,000 in recent years to help stage the event.
:15:10. > :15:13.I think it is ludicrous, and the idea you can spend ?400,000
:15:14. > :15:18.subsidising gigs and not spend enough money on these vitally

:15:22. > :15:24.Sunderland football club were also concerned the concerts were damaging
:15:25. > :15:26.the pitch and not really generating a great deal of money. But the event
:15:27. > :15:32.will be missed. That is a shame. We have been to a
:15:33. > :15:35.few. We went to Kings of Leon and also Beyonce, and it was really
:15:36. > :15:39.good. It will be less of a reason to visit
:15:40. > :15:43.Sunderland. I think it is a shame, because there
:15:44. > :15:48.is really not much else to bring Babel to Sunderland, so I think it

:15:52. > :15:56.Double bull Godzilla would never rule out having concerts again in

:16:01. > :16:04.in Sunderland any time soon. -- the football club says it will never
:16:05. > :16:05.rule out having concerts again. Bruce Springsteen was good. I
:16:06. > :16:07.remember that one. A Cumbrian manufacturer
:16:08. > :16:09.of artificial grass is planning to expand, on the back of demand

:17:08. > :17:17.because obviously, sport in this country is of high
:17:18. > :17:21.importance to a lot of people, especially
:17:22. > :17:22.five-a-side football, and hockey is becoming
:17:23. > :17:28.a lot more popular now. The main pitches that we are
:17:29. > :17:32.surfacing at the moment are rugby, hockey, some tennis and some

:17:38. > :17:39.600,000 square metres of its products to sports clubs
:17:40. > :17:42.and the homes market. But it has ambitions to hit

:18:08. > :18:11.want to emulate apprentice Daniel, for whom this unusual business
:18:12. > :18:26.is now second nature. It is like normal to me. I have

:18:33. > :18:35.with the company and they have put me through my forklift license and
:18:36. > :18:36.things like that, so there are plenty of opportunities within the

:18:39. > :18:40.if more clubs, football and rugby, decide a Cumbrian pitch solution
:18:41. > :18:44.is just right for their patch. Time for sport, and it's
:18:45. > :18:58.all about the magic of the FA Cup Does it still exists?
:18:59. > :19:00.Of course it does! It should be about that this weekend, but it is
:19:01. > :19:01.kind of half and half. With our lower league sides already

:19:25. > :19:26.and Moyes is clearly frustrated by attempts to lure the striker away

:20:44. > :20:51.a cost cutting measure. I think it is just what the club see

:21:13. > :21:18.The Middlesbrough boss, who enjoys the FA Cup, is expecting a tough

:22:37. > :22:40.So how many re-inforcements does Rafa Benitez intend
:22:41. > :22:54.Easily, we know that in January, the transfer window is open, and maybe

:22:59. > :23:05.but at the same time, as you say, we have done really well, and in the

:25:18. > :25:21.If you're going out there, you will need to get wrapped up, I think!
:25:22. > :25:24.Time for the weather with Jennifer. What have you got? It is knowledge
:25:25. > :25:30.and too bad this weekend. We have a change in the way for our
:25:31. > :25:33.weather. Gone are the scenes earlier this week, when we had bright, blue
:25:34. > :25:40.winter sunshine and a hard frost. Thank you to Capability Brown
:25:41. > :25:44.presenting a ten. This week, likely to be more like this, Misty and
:25:45. > :25:48.murky, like this picture from Karen earlier today. So a lot of cloud
:25:49. > :25:51.around this weekend. It will be a mostly dry weekend, though we can't
:25:52. > :25:55.rule out the odd spot of drizzle, and milder than it has been over the
:25:56. > :25:59.last few days. We have had a weather front today forcing some outbreaks
:26:00. > :26:04.of rain. That has largely cleared away now. They will be a few patches
:26:05. > :26:07.of drizzle over the cells overnight, but generally, a cloudy night with
:26:08. > :26:12.patches of mist and hill fog as well. Temperatures overnight will
:26:13. > :26:15.fall back to around 6 degrees Celsius, so we not expecting frost
:26:16. > :26:23.by tomorrow morning. Morning, it is a cloudy start to the day. Misty and
:26:24. > :26:27.murky in places, but generally, Saturday works out as a decent day.
:26:28. > :26:31.Outbreaks in places, so we could season good spells of sunshine. Here
:26:32. > :26:34.is how things like that around three in the afternoon. For Cumbria, we
:26:35. > :26:41.could still be here there were hanging on to hill fog over the
:26:42. > :26:44.felony afternoon, but we will see sons -- spells of sunshine coming
:26:45. > :26:47.through. The north-east, a fairly cloudy picture through the
:26:48. > :26:51.afternoon, but whether cloud breaks, we will see that sunshine, and
:26:52. > :26:55.temperatures will reach a high of eight Celsius. Through Saturday
:26:56. > :27:02.night and into Sunday, a dry night again. Mist and Merck developing.
:27:03. > :27:05.Further hill fog over the fells, and bridges will drop down to five
:27:06. > :27:12.Celsius. On Sunday morning, we do it all again. I Misty, 30 start, lots
:27:13. > :27:15.of low cloud around, and on Sunday, likely to be slightly cloudier than
:27:16. > :27:19.Saturday. Cloud will break in places, so some spells of sunshine
:27:20. > :27:24.are possible and the temperatures on Sunday, milder, up to a high of 10
:27:25. > :27:28.degrees. Through Sunday and into Monday, we start to pick up some
:27:29. > :27:31.spells of rain, but brighter on Tuesday.
:27:32. > :27:35.Thank you very much. And that is it. The end of our first week back. I
:27:36. > :27:38.couldn't remember what day it was at the beginning of the week! Have a
