:00:00. > :00:00.Tonight... and on BBC One we now join the BBC's

:00:00. > :00:07.Storm surges hit communities along the North East coast,

:00:08. > :00:12.and bring flooding to this tourist town in North Yorkshire.

:00:13. > :00:17.I've lived here 40 years and I don't think I've seen

:00:18. > :00:23.Placed on extended leave - the man who's been in charge

:00:24. > :00:27.of Newcastle's hospitals for 40 years.

:00:28. > :00:30.How a town came together to help a family whose home

:00:31. > :00:35.And Jeremy Corbyn talks about the forthcoming Copeland

:00:36. > :00:37.by-election and says a crisis in the Health Service

:00:38. > :00:43.In sport - a football club saddled with debt,

:00:44. > :00:45.but the Sunderland boss insists he does hope to hang

:00:46. > :00:50.And gone but not forgotten - why Boro fans said it with flowers

:00:51. > :01:06.following a striker's departure in the January sales.

:01:07. > :01:09.It's been a waiting game for communities up and down

:01:10. > :01:14.Forecasters had predicted storm surges overnight.

:01:15. > :01:17.They didn't materialise - but disruption was again feared

:01:18. > :01:20.at high tide this afternoon when 11 flood warnings were in

:01:21. > :01:24.They ran from Seahouses in the North, down to Scarborough

:01:25. > :01:30.As you can see, the wintry weather has produced some

:01:31. > :01:31.spectacular scenes - and some flooding.

:01:32. > :01:34.Adrian Pitches is live for us now at Roker in Sunderland.

:01:35. > :01:50.Yes, there have been spectacular scenes here today as the storm surge

:01:51. > :01:53.came down the North Sea. We had this spectacular high tide, a spring

:01:54. > :01:59.tide, coupled with these very strong north-westerly winds producing

:02:00. > :02:03.surging tides. People out in strength taking pictures marvelling

:02:04. > :02:08.at this free natural spectacle, great entertainment on a Friday

:02:09. > :02:11.afternoon. I talked to a number of people who were completely bowled

:02:12. > :02:12.over by the spectacle and this is what they had to tell me.

:02:13. > :02:16.Lived in Sunderland for a very long time, and fantastic

:02:17. > :02:19.Have you been taking lots of pictures?

:02:20. > :02:23.Unfortunately my iPhone has now gone flat.

:02:24. > :02:26.I was born here, and I used to sit on those steps.

:02:27. > :02:30.I won't today, but this is wonderful.

:02:31. > :02:33.It beats California, beats everywhere.

:02:34. > :02:39.I've lived here 40 years, and I don't think I've seen

:02:40. > :02:49.the sea as big as this, and I'm down here twice today.

:02:50. > :02:54.Overseeing the flood prevention operation has of course been the

:02:55. > :02:58.Environment Agency. With me if John Shelby from the agency. How do you

:02:59. > :03:03.feel it has gone today? I think it has gone very well today. We put out

:03:04. > :03:08.the right number of double odds and warnings so people could be aware of

:03:09. > :03:12.the risks and be prepared. Particularly down on the quayside in

:03:13. > :03:16.Newcastle, we had predicted that the incoming tide might break out of the

:03:17. > :03:22.quayside there. We had that temporary defences in place. They

:03:23. > :03:26.were tested at high tide around 4pm, DC did break out of the lowest part

:03:27. > :03:30.of the quayside round the Spring bread. That is where the defences

:03:31. > :03:35.were and they worked and they held up the water. The flooding. Along

:03:36. > :03:40.the coast what is the flood risk or the effect of this storm surge? We

:03:41. > :03:47.do have the ability still in place of along the coast. The conditions

:03:48. > :03:51.are still quite dangerous. There is an onshore wind. The tide is still

:03:52. > :03:56.high and we would urge people to exercise extreme caution and resist

:03:57. > :04:01.the temptation to go sightseeing and put themselves at any risk. Thank

:04:02. > :04:06.you for that. As John says, happily there have been very few incidents

:04:07. > :04:10.of danger to life or a limb but people do need to be careful. It is,

:04:11. > :04:12.after all, Friday the 13th, be careful.

:04:13. > :04:14.Meanwhile there's been flooding further down

:04:15. > :04:18.These pictures were taken on Pier Road just before high tide.

:04:19. > :04:21.Businesses and people living in the area and are being warned

:04:22. > :04:25.to be vigilant, and to stay away from the waves.

:04:26. > :04:28.Further inland - in the area around the station -

:04:29. > :04:31.water came over the harbour wall, making New Quay Road

:04:32. > :04:35.And it was a similar picture in Scarborough

:04:36. > :04:38.Phil Bodmer was there for us and sent this

:04:39. > :04:50.I think it is safe to saying now perhaps the worst of the storm surge

:04:51. > :04:54.is over. I water was a couple of hours ago. Seas are still heavy and

:04:55. > :04:58.they are overlapping and you can see the road there, what were still

:04:59. > :05:02.coming up. The book pretty spectacular earlier on and because

:05:03. > :05:07.of the waves that came up, knocked these heavy objects like bends over.

:05:08. > :05:12.It looked more spectacular than it was a thinker. In a sense it hasn't

:05:13. > :05:17.caused any damage to property. They have been protected by those steel

:05:18. > :05:21.barriers and sandbagging which was carried out yesterday. At the spa

:05:22. > :05:25.complex all over the side of the harbour here in Scarborough there

:05:26. > :05:30.was some damage. That will be assessed when it is said to do so.

:05:31. > :05:32.Other than that it seems that Scarborough this time as God of

:05:33. > :05:39.micro-relatively lightly in comparison to the damage that was

:05:40. > :05:46.done in 2013 when the estimated cost of repair is in Scarborough was

:05:47. > :05:49.estimated over ?1 million. The foreshore road remained sealed off

:05:50. > :05:53.tonight and the clear up is expected over the weekend.

:05:54. > :05:56.A court's heard how a man - accused of strangling a grandmother

:05:57. > :05:59.with an electrical cable - was prepared to do whatever it took

:06:00. > :06:04.33-year-old Gareth Dack is accused of murdering 79-year-old Norma Bell

:06:05. > :06:06.at her home in Hartlepool last April.

:06:07. > :06:12.Stuart Whincup reports from Teesside Crown Court.

:06:13. > :06:15.The prosecution claimed Gareth Dack was guilty of the brutal

:06:16. > :06:18.murder of Norma Bell, and that he strangled her

:06:19. > :06:22.with an electrical cable at her home in Hartlepool.

:06:23. > :06:25.He then stole and sold the television and searched

:06:26. > :06:29.the property for money or anything valuable which he could sell.

:06:30. > :06:33.In the early hours of the morning, as his victim lay close by,

:06:34. > :06:36.the court was told that Gareth Dack used Norma Bell's telephone

:06:37. > :06:43.Now the prosecution say that when Dack decided to leave

:06:44. > :06:46.Norma Bell's house one final time, he decided to cover his tracks

:06:47. > :06:53.He turned the gas on at the hob, hoping the gas would ignite,

:06:54. > :06:55.causing an explosion, destroying any scientific evidence

:06:56. > :07:02.Dack's DNA was found on a number of items

:07:03. > :07:06.He later told the police that was because

:07:07. > :07:11.He also told officers he was not guilty of the murder

:07:12. > :07:14.and that she was a friend of his mother's.

:07:15. > :07:18.The prosecution say Gareth Dack's motivation was financial.

:07:19. > :07:21.He needed cash and was going to do whatever it took to get

:07:22. > :07:35.33-year-old Gareth Dack from Hartlepool denies murder and arson.

:07:36. > :07:37.Sir Leonard Fenwick - the country's longest-serving

:07:38. > :07:42.NHS chief executive - has been placed on "extended leave."

:07:43. > :07:45.He's been in charge of Newcastle Hospitals since 1977,

:07:46. > :07:47.and helped put them on the world map with its transplant,

:07:48. > :07:53.But Look North's learned he's now being held to account

:07:54. > :07:55.by his board "on behalf of patients and taxpayers."

:07:56. > :07:57.Our Health Reporter Sharon Barbour joins me now.

:07:58. > :08:03.Sharon, firstly - Sir Len a huge name in the NHS.

:08:04. > :08:10.For 40 years has managed Newcastle Hospitals.

:08:11. > :08:18.In the early days Newcastle General and the Freeman. He has seen a huge

:08:19. > :08:22.number of challenges and changes in the health service and he has put

:08:23. > :08:25.Newcastle on the map. He created the great North Children's Hospital and

:08:26. > :08:30.brought in robotic surgery, major trauma unit saw the Bobby Robson

:08:31. > :08:36.Cancer centre developed. But perhaps most notably his work around

:08:37. > :08:39.transplant in the building of the Institute of transplantation.

:08:40. > :08:44.Newcastle perform the first single and transplant in Europe. The

:08:45. > :08:50.world's breasts of baby had transplant, Kaylee Davidson who is

:08:51. > :08:56.30 this year and cheap pays tribute to his work. I would say thank you

:08:57. > :08:59.for his vision to become reality coming you have saved not only my

:09:00. > :09:05.life but other transplants from around the region and we will be

:09:06. > :09:08.forever grateful. During the National review he fought for

:09:09. > :09:12.Newcastle to carry on with tiled heart transplants before the

:09:13. > :09:17.decision was overturned. He was always in a bottle of some kind.

:09:18. > :09:23.That one meant a lot to him -- battle. Initially Newcastle was

:09:24. > :09:27.given the right to carry on the transplant.

:09:28. > :09:29.Big thank you to everyone in the north-east, but also

:09:30. > :09:31.from throughout the country and abroad who have

:09:32. > :09:33.supported Newcastle upon Tyne in all that we do.

:09:34. > :09:45.Another achievement for Sir Len was the CQC rating the trust as

:09:46. > :09:49.outstanding. A long list of achievements but what has happened

:09:50. > :09:50.today? We don't know exactly. In a statement Newcastle hospitals

:09:51. > :10:17.confirmed that... NHS Improvement is currently headed

:10:18. > :10:23.by Jim Mackey from the nearby Northumbria trust. He is heading up

:10:24. > :10:27.the National institution but he has toured as he removed himself from

:10:28. > :10:32.any involvement in these affairs. We haven't been able to contact Sir Len

:10:33. > :10:36.for comment. I have spoken to a number of staff and they all said

:10:37. > :10:41.they can't comment. One described the situation as locked down but

:10:42. > :10:43.they are very shocked. Interesting. More to come on that for sure. Thank

:10:44. > :10:44.you. A 15-year-old girl -

:10:45. > :10:47.accused of murdering a seven-year-old girl in York -

:10:48. > :10:49.has appeared before a judge Katie Rough was found

:10:50. > :10:52.with severe injuries on Monday The 15-year-old girl, who can't be

:10:53. > :10:56.identified for legal reasons, is also accused of the possession

:10:57. > :10:59.of a knife as an offensive weapon. She was remanded into youth

:11:00. > :11:01.detention accommodation. Police are appealing for information

:11:02. > :11:04.after a family home in County Durham was badly vandalised

:11:05. > :11:06.while the occupants were out. It happened in Petterson Dale

:11:07. > :11:10.in Coxhoe on Tuesday. Those responsible had

:11:11. > :11:12.thrown paint around, poured cleaning products over walls

:11:13. > :11:14.and furniture, ransacked cupboards and drawers and poured

:11:15. > :11:19.bleach into the kettle. Now, we all know how people

:11:20. > :11:22.in the region pull together And this next story proves

:11:23. > :11:26.that community spirit Just before Christmas,

:11:27. > :11:30.Steph Lang's house in Hartlepool But, as Phil Connell reports,

:11:31. > :11:35.a campaign on social media has seen I think it could be

:11:36. > :11:42.clothes or bedwear. It's a side of Hartlepool that

:11:43. > :11:47.doesn't always make headlines. A kind and generous side that makes

:11:48. > :11:52.this community strong. Just before Christmas,

:11:53. > :11:54.this house in the town Steph Lang who lived

:11:55. > :11:58.here with her two children had no Everything was just

:11:59. > :12:09.black from smoke. They had no clothes apart

:12:10. > :12:11.from what they were stood in. On hearing of the family's

:12:12. > :12:20.plight, Tony and Leslie They launched a social

:12:21. > :12:23.media campaign asking And the response from Hartlepool

:12:24. > :12:29.has been overwhelming. Chips are down,

:12:30. > :12:31.everybody pulls together. So, what is it about

:12:32. > :12:41.Hartlepool people you think? Today more clothes and furniture

:12:42. > :12:48.were being delivered. Acts of kindness for

:12:49. > :12:52.which the family says Yeah, it is overwhelming,

:12:53. > :13:00.to be honest, because there are that many bad stories about people

:13:01. > :13:05.that they have done brilliant. I feel sorry for the

:13:06. > :13:09.family, I really do, Chips are down, we pull together

:13:10. > :13:14.no matter what it is. The town's support has got this

:13:15. > :13:18.family now back on its feet. A story to make people

:13:19. > :13:28.here proud of where they live. The Labour leader has said a crisis

:13:29. > :13:31.in the region's health service will be a key issue in the upcoming

:13:32. > :13:34.Copeland by-election. Jeremy Corbyn has also denied

:13:35. > :13:38.claims his previous opposition to nuclear power will lose votes

:13:39. > :13:40.for his party in the The contest has been

:13:41. > :13:45.triggered by the resignation of the sitting Labour MP,

:13:46. > :13:47.Jamie Reed. Our Political Correspondent Luke

:13:48. > :13:50.Walton asked Mr Corbyn if his criticism of the nuclear

:13:51. > :13:55.industry was Labour's Achilles heel. And it would be very helpful

:13:56. > :14:03.if they treated their pensioners properly and treated the pension

:14:04. > :14:06.fund properly as well. And those workers in Sellafield

:14:07. > :14:09.deserve a fair deal just like everybody else and we will be

:14:10. > :14:12.working with them on that. But you are actually on Conservative

:14:13. > :14:14.leaflets and your comments about decommissioning by power

:14:15. > :14:17.stations is already making hay It is very odd that that

:14:18. > :14:21.Conservative leaflet, so well funded, so beautifully

:14:22. > :14:25.produced and so expensive, didn't find even that amount

:14:26. > :14:28.of space to say something about the National Health Service,

:14:29. > :14:31.about the crisis in the NHS in the region, so I suggest

:14:32. > :14:35.to Conservatives, they are in government,

:14:36. > :14:38.the NHS is their responsibility, So, as Prime Minister,

:14:39. > :14:42.would you approve a plan for a new nuclear power station next

:14:43. > :14:45.to Sellafield which Well, we are not sure

:14:46. > :14:50.when that is going to come up. That may well have happened before

:14:51. > :14:54.a General Election takes place. I want to see an energy

:14:55. > :14:56.mix in Britain. I want to see a wider

:14:57. > :14:58.needs of renewable... I don't know what the circumstances

:14:59. > :15:03.will be at that time. You are against nuclear

:15:04. > :15:07.power, aren't you? I have obviously been very concerned

:15:08. > :15:10.about nuclear safety, as indeed has everybody else

:15:11. > :15:15.for a very long time. I also want to see a strong energy

:15:16. > :15:21.mix in Britain, which other So you don't rule out approving

:15:22. > :15:25.a new nuclear power station? Let's look at the issue

:15:26. > :15:28.when it comes up. Would you be going to Sellafield

:15:29. > :15:30.during the campaign I will be all over Cumbria

:15:31. > :15:35.in the election campaign. There's more from Jeremy Corbyn

:15:36. > :15:37.on Sunday Politics. That's this Sunday morning

:15:38. > :15:42.at 11am, here on BBC One. Now, as you can imagine,

:15:43. > :15:44.water companies like to keep But now Northumbrian Water has

:15:45. > :15:49.agreed to lower levels at its Kielder reservoir at certain

:15:50. > :15:53.times of the year. It's hoped it could play a part

:15:54. > :15:55.in preventing a repeat of the horrendous flooding

:15:56. > :15:58.many of our communities have faced. Our Political Editor Richard Moss

:15:59. > :16:04.reports on how it'll work. Kielder - the main source of water

:16:05. > :16:07.for much of our region. But also now playing a part

:16:08. > :16:11.in preventing floods. This is a controlled release

:16:12. > :16:13.of water from the reservoir - something that has been happening

:16:14. > :16:16.at Kielder for a few months now. It means at key times

:16:17. > :16:21.of the year Kielder can be kept below full capacity,

:16:22. > :16:23.allowing it to retain floodwater rather than see it flow over the top

:16:24. > :16:26.of the dam and into rivers Because of the sheer size

:16:27. > :16:32.of Kielder, we have done the modelling and we can afford

:16:33. > :16:35.to keep it at a lower And this lower level gives us some

:16:36. > :16:39.capacity to absorb more of the water And that stops it going

:16:40. > :16:44.into the Tyne and maybe causing The decision to lower levels

:16:45. > :16:48.here is part of an agreement But is this really a substitute

:16:49. > :16:51.for spending money There is no question

:16:52. > :16:56.we need to do that. But the single biggest thing to stop

:16:57. > :16:59.flooding is to retain the water before it gets down to the villages

:17:00. > :17:01.and towns below. Behind me you've got

:17:02. > :17:04.the best thing to do that. And relatively speaking this

:17:05. > :17:08.doesn't cost any money. This is a deal which will be

:17:09. > :17:10.watched closely elsewhere. Locals living near Thirlmere

:17:11. > :17:12.in Cumbria have been pressing their local water company -

:17:13. > :17:17.United Utilties - I would urge other organisations

:17:18. > :17:20.like United Utilities and others to come to the table and do

:17:21. > :17:22.a similar thing. I think Northumbria Water

:17:23. > :17:24.deserve great credit, It's not rocket science,

:17:25. > :17:29.but it does require some effort. And other organisations should

:17:30. > :17:31.take their part as well This is no panacea -

:17:32. > :17:38.the authorities say if something like 2015's Storm Desmond hit again,

:17:39. > :17:40.it wouldn't prevent Time for sport. A celebrity

:17:41. > :17:58.supporter... Yes. It's a case of fantasy

:17:59. > :18:00.football for Middlesbrough The popular TV and stage actor has

:18:01. > :18:04.been back in the region to promote a newly-adapted play in which he'll

:18:05. > :18:08.star as the manager of a fictitious A busy schedule won't stop him

:18:09. > :18:12.keeping a watchful eye, though, on his beloved Boro's latest attempt

:18:13. > :18:15.to move away from One of Boro's most famous fans

:18:16. > :18:22.is starring in a dressing room drama called the Red Lion in April -

:18:23. > :18:37.part of the Spring Season Played a football manager before?

:18:38. > :18:42.Never. I was a player once in the manageress for people who can

:18:43. > :18:44.remember that far back, a Channel 4 drama series where we auditioned for

:18:45. > :18:45.the football before the acting. And there was plenty

:18:46. > :18:47.of badge-kissing in the stands for Stockton-born Stephen

:18:48. > :18:49.and a packed Riverside last May when the Teessiders

:18:50. > :18:59.ended their 7-year exile Absolutely delighted. Especially for

:19:00. > :19:04.Steve Gibson. The fact that Jack Charlton was there at the end and

:19:05. > :19:07.had a little tear in his eye. It was lovely. It is great for the area. We

:19:08. > :19:11.have been in the wilderness for too long and I think they have won a lot

:19:12. > :19:13.of fans this year with the way they have been playing and hopefully

:19:14. > :19:14.we'll be there for many more seasons to come.

:19:15. > :19:16.Middlesbrough fans won't be seeing much of David Nugent

:19:17. > :19:19.for a while after he signed for Steve McClaren's Derby County.

:19:20. > :19:21.Greeting the Boro promotion hero on his arrival,

:19:22. > :19:25.a bouquet of flowers from fans on Teesside.

:19:26. > :19:31.Thank you very much. A good connection. I always sign autographs

:19:32. > :19:34.after the game. I always got on with them. Always there to talk to them

:19:35. > :19:36.and they are the ones who pay your wages. It is important to give

:19:37. > :19:37.something back. But as Boro prepare for the away day

:19:38. > :19:41.at Watford, will the likes of winger Stewart Downing be following Nugent

:19:42. > :19:51.out of the Riverside this month? He is an important player for this

:19:52. > :19:57.team and this group. If Stewart wants to leave, everybody is happy,

:20:30. > :20:32.tied behind his back of all sorts of reasons all season. He admits the

:20:33. > :20:36.Uefa of the table makes sobering reading. It is different view on

:20:37. > :20:40.Manchester United with their turnover. I don't think it is a good

:20:46. > :20:50.Executive alluded to do when he told everyone about the financial

:20:51. > :20:54.situation. I think it's just tells everybody how many years Sunderland

:20:55. > :21:00.have had a lot of money spent in the past. It is probably not going to be

:21:01. > :21:03.that so much in the future. While playing down the prospect of many if

:21:24. > :21:28.easy pickings but I want to keep my good players and I want us to build

:24:36. > :24:45.I know you are a big darts fan. Time for the weather. The most important

:24:46. > :24:49.part of the programme! It is a really busy day. Snow this morning

:24:50. > :24:53.and this afternoon. All above the storm surge. You have been sending

:24:54. > :24:58.in your pictures. This from Whitley Bay is showing the waves lapping up

:24:59. > :25:02.against the sea wall. The next one from Whitby. This looks like snow

:25:03. > :25:07.but it is actually the sea foam that was whipped up by the winds. Finally

:25:08. > :25:13.this picture, it looks really beautiful but the waves are really

:25:14. > :25:17.powerful. For the weekend, things are set to change. It is going to

:25:18. > :25:20.stay bitterly cold. We gradually lose the winds through the weekend.

:25:21. > :25:25.Some sunshine tomorrow but by the time we get to Sunday things are

:25:26. > :25:29.turning milder but they will be wet once again. The first thing to note

:25:30. > :25:33.through the night tonight is a Met Office Yellow warning for ice. Where

:25:34. > :25:37.we have had showers today and the temperatures fall tonight that could

:25:38. > :25:42.be a problem tomorrow morning. Generally a dry night. As you

:25:43. > :25:48.showers in parts of Cumbria and later there might be a few along the

:25:49. > :25:53.north-east coast. In general dry but very cold. Temperatures in around

:25:54. > :26:00.minus one four minus two. Rural spots could be minus four or minus

:26:01. > :26:03.five Celsius. Bitterly cold start to Saturday morning. Watch out for the

:26:04. > :26:06.highest first thing but plenty of crisp winter sunshine through the

:26:07. > :26:11.morning. Still a nagging north-westerly breeze so it will

:26:12. > :26:16.accentuate that cold feel. My three o'clock in the afternoon the

:26:17. > :26:19.temperatures across Cumbria are just starting to creep up and that is a

:26:20. > :26:23.sign of things to come for the weekend. Here through the afternoon

:26:24. > :26:28.temperatures will reach around six Celsius. Through the north-east into

:26:29. > :26:34.North Yorkshire highs only two or three Celsius. Adding the strength

:26:35. > :26:37.of the wind it will feel very cold. This is the pressure Chart through

:26:38. > :26:41.Saturday night into Sunday. They were the front moving in and that

:26:42. > :26:45.will bring some outbreaks of rain. On the leading edge it good for must

:26:46. > :26:49.know for a time. This is how Saturday night books. Starting

:26:50. > :26:55.bright but it won't last long. The weather front bringing some rain. A

:26:56. > :27:00.lot of hill fog as well. Some low cloud. Temperatures dropping to

:27:01. > :27:05.around two Celsius. We stay above freezing for Sunday morning but a

:27:06. > :27:10.bit of a murky start. Very great, outbreaks of rain. On and off by the

:27:11. > :27:16.afternoon so not completely wet but it will feel dull and overcast. Much

:27:17. > :27:21.milder. Tamara's temperatures around six, Sunday looking at around 10

:27:22. > :27:27.Celsius. It will feel significantly milder. Through Monday it is another

:27:28. > :27:34.fairly grey day. Lots of low cloud. We keep that through next week.

:27:35. > :27:38.Thank you, I was going to go for a walk at the weekend but it sounds

:27:39. > :27:40.like I should sit in front of the fire. Whatever you are doing have
