:00:58. > :01:00.elderly people in our region, conning them out of
:01:01. > :01:08.Another, an 87-year-widow, was pushed to the ground
:01:09. > :01:16.In most cases, the gang took money without doing any work at all.
:01:17. > :01:18.Tonight, three of them are in prison.
:01:19. > :01:21.Well, our news correspondent Mark Denten is outside
:01:22. > :01:40.The judge here today called it a despicable case of criminal conduct,
:01:41. > :01:44.a gang of men who operated throughout our region targeting
:01:45. > :01:49.deliberately vulnerable people, especially pensioners, and then
:01:50. > :01:53.effectively robbing then, in some cases, of their life savings.
:01:54. > :01:59.Far from being ashamed, they had celebrated, taking photos of one of
:02:00. > :02:03.their victims to zest money, filming themselves celebrating.
:02:04. > :02:04.The judge said they had a warped sense of achievement. Tonight, three
:02:05. > :02:08.of them are locked up. Sunderland's suburbs,
:02:09. > :02:10.many of the elderly One criminal gang called
:02:11. > :02:12.it an opportunity. These men were part of it,
:02:13. > :02:15.they posed as builders pressurising vulnerable
:02:16. > :02:16.people into handing over thousands of pounds
:02:17. > :02:17.for work that wasn't needed
:02:18. > :02:23.and rarely carried out. Often using this red van,
:02:24. > :02:31.they targeted pensioners including a former miner,
:02:32. > :02:32.75-year-old George Metcalfe who, over a period of weeks,
:02:33. > :02:34.withdrew ?30,000 from his bank account,
:02:35. > :02:35.his The gang turned up here
:02:36. > :02:39.on Newlands Avenue in Sunderland at the home
:02:40. > :02:43.of Joan was knocked over
:02:44. > :02:47.and fractured her hip A neighbour found her
:02:48. > :02:51.but it was ten hours later. She had lain in this little
:02:52. > :02:55.kitchen for ten hours screaming for help, and it was only
:02:56. > :02:58.by chance somebody overheard her She died three months
:02:59. > :03:01.later in hospital. Today, three members of the gang
:03:02. > :03:10.were sent to prison, Lee Davidson for five years,
:03:11. > :03:20.Philip Orton for three years and nine months,
:03:21. > :03:26.The judge said the three men could not be held
:03:27. > :03:27.criminally responsible for Mrs Barnett's death.
:03:28. > :03:29.Another man, Levi Gales, 44, was charged with her
:03:30. > :03:34.A statement by one of the neighbours with read out by a police officer
:03:35. > :03:48.We've visited her in hospital but she seemed to have lost all interest
:03:49. > :03:53.in life. One member of the gang is still on
:03:54. > :03:57.the run, the judge adjourned his sentencing until he is recaptured.
:03:58. > :03:59.Well, meanwhile, Durham Police are hunting three men who attacked
:04:00. > :04:02.a pensioner and stole his life savings over the weekend.
:04:03. > :04:04.It happened in the village of Coronation near Bishop Auckland.
:04:05. > :04:06.Alison Freeman joins us from there now.
:04:07. > :04:21.Police are calling this a horrific and terrifying attack on an elderly
:04:22. > :04:28.man in his own home. Police were called after 8:30pm on
:04:29. > :04:33.Saturday, the 77-year-old had gone to his coal shed when three men with
:04:34. > :04:38.face coverings tackled him. They hit him over the head with a coal
:04:39. > :04:45.shovel, dragged him inside, and searched his belongings.
:04:46. > :04:49.They left with his life savings. The man did need hospital treatment but
:04:50. > :04:53.fortunately his injuries were not serious.
:04:54. > :04:55.We spoke to one of the victims's relatives who lives in the same
:04:56. > :05:00.street and he described how quickly it all happened.
:05:01. > :05:03.He said he didn't know, he said they were over the wall
:05:04. > :05:09.The man is 77 years old with three young lads on top of him,
:05:10. > :05:15.They took him to hospital and he stayed overnight.
:05:16. > :05:21.I've lived here al lmy life and used to know every one in every house.
:05:22. > :05:34.Do we know how much money was stolen?
:05:35. > :05:40.Durham Police won't give the exact figure but say it is substantial,
:05:41. > :05:45.his life savings, and are warning people not to keep large sums of
:05:46. > :05:47.cash in their home. The officer in charge told us the impact it had had
:05:48. > :05:49.on the victim. He is alone in his own
:05:50. > :05:52.home, the one place you're supposed to feel safe
:05:53. > :05:55.and comfortable in and this type of He's too old to put up much
:05:56. > :06:00.of a fight and there were So, it's an absolutely
:06:01. > :06:03.terrifying ordeal and something which no one
:06:04. > :06:05.should have to go through. I've spoken to him every day
:06:06. > :06:08.since this has taken place, several times, and he is just
:06:09. > :06:10.devastated at the moment. He is just really struggling
:06:11. > :06:13.to come to terms with it. He has a great family
:06:14. > :06:21.behind him, though. The police say they need as much
:06:22. > :06:22.information as possible to catch the three men responsible.

:10:49. > :10:50.to have swimming lessons. It is not feasible to
:10:51. > :11:00.get to any other pool. For people with disabilities,
:11:01. > :11:04.it is a good pool. For young people with young
:11:05. > :11:06.families, excellent. That is why I feel it is a great
:11:07. > :11:11.loss to the community if we can't The man who has helped community

:11:16. > :11:18.advising the Elswick group. And he sees a bright

:14:45. > :14:48.inaccurate and misleading. Guy is in danger of damaging local
