:00:00. > :00:00.Tonight: "Outrageous and rigged against Newcastle."

:00:07. > :00:08.Some of the angry reaction to the news that the child heart

:00:09. > :00:11.surgery unit will have to move across the city to

:00:12. > :00:23.It looks to me like this is designed to shift decision-making from the

:00:24. > :00:29.technical issues involved to the political issues which of course is

:00:30. > :00:30.something very different and I think very, very wrong.

:00:31. > :00:32.Also tonight: Jailed for more than two years.

:00:33. > :00:36.The internet troll who sent death threats to an MP.

:00:37. > :00:39.We're live at the River Wear where the centrepiece

:00:40. > :00:43.of Sunderland's new bridge is being lifted into position.

:00:44. > :00:48.York minster's very own police force is to be given the same powers

:00:49. > :00:53.Why there are sometimes more important things

:00:54. > :01:00.But when tomorrow's games do kick off can our Premier League

:01:01. > :01:19.24 hours after Look North revealed the future of child heart surgery

:01:20. > :01:21.in Newcastle is in jeopardy, there's been an angry reaction

:01:22. > :01:24.In order to continue, NHS England has said

:01:25. > :01:27.the Freeman Hospital will have to bring ALL its specialist

:01:28. > :01:32.Currently some are provided three miles across the city,

:01:33. > :01:34.in the Great North Children's Hospital at the Royal

:01:35. > :01:41.Well our health reporter, Sharon Barbour broke

:01:42. > :01:44.the story and she's outside the Freeman Hospital now.

:01:45. > :01:48.The reaction to the news has been one of shock.

:01:49. > :01:50.Two Newcastle MPs are planning to raise the issue with

:01:51. > :02:03.Here at the Freeman, they say they have to move

:02:04. > :02:13.children's heart surgery to the RVI is a huge and complex task that

:02:14. > :02:20.If they plan the house to work to secure the future of child heart

:02:21. > :02:22.surgery in the north-east. Rachel in Middlesbrough knows how

:02:23. > :02:25.difficult it is to watch your own Her son Theo has

:02:26. > :02:34.needed it three times. We owe them everything, we really

:02:35. > :02:42.do, they are just outstanding. And an outstanding team and we still

:02:43. > :02:46.have contact with them, now, Theo goes... On a three yearly basis,

:02:47. > :02:47.now, a fantastic thing which we would never thought we would see.

:02:48. > :02:50.He's is one of more than 2,000 heart and lung transplants have been

:02:51. > :02:53.performed in both children and adults, at the Freeman Hospital

:02:54. > :02:56.But BBC Look North has revealed for the Freeman Hospital to be able

:02:57. > :02:58.to continue its life saving complex child heart surgery ..

:02:59. > :03:02.NHS England says it needs to be on the same site as other specialist

:03:03. > :03:09.Today Newcastle Hospitals confirmed it was drawing up plans

:03:10. > :03:10.to move everything across to

:03:11. > :03:23.NHS England have made it very clear that they really do wish us to move.

:03:24. > :03:26.What services would go across? We would need to re-equipped to

:03:27. > :03:33.operating theatres, we would need what's a cardiac catheterisation

:03:34. > :03:38.laboratory, a large, dedicated children's intensive care area, a

:03:39. > :03:42.high dependency area, ward beds, and outpatient clinic. Where will the

:03:43. > :03:49.room come in the great north to the hospital do move all of these

:03:50. > :03:52.things? I can't answer that at the minute, specifically, but the trust

:03:53. > :03:55.is having a long, hard look at various options which will

:03:56. > :04:02.inevitably means some building. And new construction at the Royal

:04:03. > :04:05.Victoria Infirmary site. Who will pay for that? The great NHS will

:04:06. > :04:09.have to fund it, but I can't answer that specifically at this moment in

:04:10. > :04:12.time but there is no firm promises anywhere. We will have to look and

:04:13. > :04:17.see what is possible first. Because you don't have an option, do you? We

:04:18. > :04:19.are not seeming to be given an option by NHS England, so....

:04:20. > :04:21.The move will be a huge challenge and will cost

:04:22. > :04:23.many millions of pounds, NHS England say Newcastle

:04:24. > :04:28.Hospitals will have to find that money themselves:

:04:29. > :04:31.The news has drawn strong criticism from Newcastle Mps; Chi Onwurah

:04:32. > :04:34.is writing to the Health Secretary asking "whether forcing it to move

:04:35. > :04:37.across the city is really in the interests of children."

:04:38. > :04:43.Nick Brown MP was also shocked to hear the news.

:04:44. > :04:54.I think it's outrageous. The issue here is a rational argument, and the

:04:55. > :04:57.weight of evidence is clearly a Newcastle by backside, first

:04:58. > :05:02.political decision-making, and there of course we come down to be

:05:03. > :05:05.secretary of state, Jeremy Hunt, so we will both be putting pressure on

:05:06. > :05:12.the secretary of state to at least they fare. -- Playfair.

:05:13. > :05:14.the secretary of state to at least they -- fare.

:05:15. > :05:17.NHS England say Newcastle will have extra time

:05:18. > :05:20.for to draw up their plans, The Hospital trust say the actual

:05:21. > :05:23.move could mean building a new heart and transplant uni on the RVI site,

:05:24. > :05:25.and the whole process could take years..

:05:26. > :05:43.NHS England have recognised the exceptional work of the hospital -

:05:44. > :05:51.especially around transplant - the only child heart transplant

:05:52. > :05:58.The medical teams here welcome that endorsement.

:05:59. > :06:00.But to survive, to continue in the future they have the packed up and

:06:01. > :06:05.move across the city. An internet troll who made

:06:06. > :06:07.anti-Semitic death threats to a Labour MP has been jailed

:06:08. > :06:11.for 27 months. John Nimmo who's 28

:06:12. > :06:14.and from South Shields faced nine charges which included two relating

:06:15. > :06:16.to emails he sent to In one he said she would

:06:17. > :06:23.'get it like Jo Cox', He appeared via video-link

:06:24. > :06:42.at Newcastle Crown Court, The judge said his need for

:06:43. > :06:45.notoriety greatly outweighed his concern for others and that he

:06:46. > :06:48.terrified his victims from his home where he thought he could remain

:06:49. > :06:53.anonymous. Today, the 28-year-old from South Shields was deigned for

:06:54. > :06:57.nine charges related to threatening an offensive messages sent to a

:06:58. > :07:02.number of victims via the Internet. In July last day he sent death

:07:03. > :07:08.threats via e-mail to Liverpool way victory MP, as just weeks after her

:07:09. > :07:17.fellow MP Jo Cox was bad and shot at her constituency office. In one

:07:18. > :07:21.e-mail to miss Berger Khmer sheep would get its like Jo Cox,

:07:22. > :07:27.accompanied by a picture of a knife. In an other come

:07:28. > :07:36.he was also sentenced for threatening to blow up a mosque,

:07:37. > :07:40.saying death will come to all Muslims. In a statement read in

:07:41. > :07:44.court today, from miss Berger, the big concern was not knowing who this

:07:45. > :07:49.was. He could have been residing next door to me and it left me

:07:50. > :07:53.feeling physically sick. In mitigation, his barrister is said he

:07:54. > :07:59.had Asperger's syndrome and lived an isolated life. He said it was

:08:00. > :08:02.unlikely that he wouldn't offend again without therapy due to

:08:03. > :08:06.psychological problems. It isn't the first time he has been convicted for

:08:07. > :08:16.this type of offence, in 2014 was jailed for tweets to MP. He was told

:08:17. > :08:19.his actions had been cowardly and caused fear, misery and paranoia

:08:20. > :08:24.amongst his victims. He also said it was a great concern that he had

:08:25. > :08:28.thought it was fun to get reactions from people whilst abusing them

:08:29. > :08:33.anonymously. And that is need for recognition had stopped any remorse.

:08:34. > :08:35.Nimmo was jailed for 27 months. Three men have appeared in court

:08:36. > :08:38.in connection with a shooting A doorman was injured outside

:08:39. > :08:43.the Tup Tup Palace club in 2015. John Henry Sayers, who's 53,

:08:44. > :08:49.and Michael Dixon, who's 35, both from the Walker area

:08:50. > :08:51.of the city, were remanded in custody accused of

:08:52. > :08:53."conspiracy to murder." A third man was bailed on a charge

:08:54. > :08:56.of "assisting an offender Police investigating the death

:08:57. > :09:03.of a man in Bishopwearmouth Cemetery in Sunderland yesterday morning -

:09:04. > :09:07.say no-one else was involved. The dead man's been named

:09:08. > :09:10.as 42-year-old Andrew Scott, Middlesbrough's Institute

:09:11. > :09:15.of Modern Art - or MIMA - It's celebrating the milestone

:09:16. > :09:18.with an exhibition of work And the pieces which have made

:09:19. > :09:23.it out of the vaults and on to the gallery's walls

:09:24. > :09:25.have been chosen by the The new exhibition is part

:09:26. > :09:29.of Mima's aim to become Our business correspondent,

:09:30. > :09:36.Ian Reeve, reports. So, for now, we'll just

:09:37. > :09:40.place the Lynn Chadwicks So, for now, we'll just place

:09:41. > :09:42.the Lynn Chadwicks on the table. The final placing

:09:43. > :09:44.of the rarely seen. Art usually kept in the vaults,

:09:45. > :09:48.of Middlesbrough's Museum of We put a call out in

:09:49. > :09:55.the Gazette to ask what works with the public like to see

:09:56. > :09:59.on permanent display and we also groups of Teeside University

:10:00. > :10:03.students to children under the age of five to select their favourite

:10:04. > :10:06.pieces from the collection stores. This exhibition marks

:10:07. > :10:08.ten years of Mima, fend off criticism that

:10:09. > :10:15.its art is too obscure, except when curated

:10:16. > :10:16.as a one off by the former

:10:17. > :10:18.top gear team. This is how I want to see

:10:19. > :10:22.people of Middlesbrough... On the left there is

:10:23. > :10:24.a Lamborghini Countach that's a Ferrari 275 GT S

:10:25. > :10:27.and there's a Land Rover. But Mima has a new direction,

:10:28. > :10:32.styling itself as a useful museum. We started our exhibitions

:10:33. > :10:34.which are about things people are concerned with,

:10:35. > :10:38.about things that are happening in the world, and we have

:10:39. > :10:42.started to respond to what people say they would like to see

:10:43. > :10:45.and what they would like to happen. 100,000 visitors

:10:46. > :10:48.already come through a plainly finding it useful

:10:49. > :10:53.enough will stop so did it become So could it become too popular?

:10:54. > :11:03.Pandering to populism? There's nothing wrong with being

:11:04. > :11:06.popular but equally you can be I don't think it's

:11:07. > :11:09.a question of and... Whether it's

:11:10. > :11:11.this or that, it's more a question of can we do a whole range of

:11:12. > :11:14.different activities. Some people of course

:11:15. > :11:18.will still criticise Mima, think it's not for them,

:11:19. > :11:22.but at after a decade that has seen big arts cuts it's still here,

:11:23. > :11:25.should they change their minds and want to see

:11:26. > :11:37.just how useful it is. Work's been going on all day

:11:38. > :11:39.in Sunderland, to lift the central pylon of

:11:40. > :11:44.the new Wear Crossing into place. It's a huge feat of civil

:11:45. > :12:00.engineering, putting the one hundred Well, it's certainly been a dramatic

:12:01. > :12:04.day down on the river here, but it is important to remember this was

:12:05. > :12:07.all were scheduled to be a 20 hour operation and bentonite they are

:12:08. > :12:11.halfway through. It is also important to remember they haven't

:12:12. > :12:15.tried a structural left on this kind of scale since they raised the

:12:16. > :12:17.London eye nearly 20 years ago, but I am pleased to say that the

:12:18. > :12:28.operation he is bang on track. They started at first light.

:12:29. > :12:33.Delicate and composite operation to lift the steel monster on to his

:12:34. > :12:37.feet, a mind boggling operation of physics and civil engineering.

:12:38. > :12:40.Tables are attached to the crossbeam which is then attached to a back

:12:41. > :12:46.mask which is attached to a top of a pylon, these cables then do a thing

:12:47. > :12:51.called a strand jack which greets the cables through them very slowly,

:12:52. > :12:56.and about six metres and our commit will take 20 hours to move the whole

:12:57. > :13:00.thing upright. With each passing hour, this enormous steel structure

:13:01. > :13:03.creeps higher and higher. And you get a real sense of how it's going

:13:04. > :13:11.to transform the Sunderland skyline completely. Hundreds came down to

:13:12. > :13:16.the banks of the river to watch the drama slowly unfold. I think it's

:13:17. > :13:22.really cool because... Because it goes really high. When it was flat

:13:23. > :13:25.on the barge, there can be you didn't realise how big it was, but

:13:26. > :13:29.now it started to go up it is very, very tall. Once-in-a-lifetime for us

:13:30. > :13:34.to see something like this happening down here, here, so yes. Quite

:13:35. > :13:38.often, we keep track of your progress. Proud Jamaat very proud of

:13:39. > :13:44.Sunderland. Plenty of sleepless nights and I'm

:13:45. > :13:47.glad to say we're here today and very confident that those nights

:13:48. > :13:51.have been worthwhile, we've had a lot of challenges along the way that

:13:52. > :13:52.we've managed to iron them out and we're very happy to see everything

:13:53. > :13:58.going forward according plan. Plenty more coming up;

:13:59. > :14:02.Dawn's here with the sport, plus:

:14:03. > :14:03.Generating new woodland We join volunteers as they plant

:14:04. > :14:18.more than 1,400 new trees And it is a cold weekend to come

:14:19. > :14:25.with some further wintry showers, sleet and snow.

:14:26. > :14:28.Thought to be the oldest police force in the country,

:14:29. > :14:30.the Minster Police have been protecting York Minster

:14:31. > :14:32.and the people who worship there, since the 13th century.

:14:33. > :14:36.They're one of just five similar forces worldwide.

:14:37. > :14:39.But this week the Minster team was formally recognised,

:14:40. > :14:41.and - within the boundaries of the cathedral -

:14:42. > :14:44.will soon hold the same powers to arrest as normal police.

:14:45. > :14:58.The Minster police have been on duty a very long time. For more than 700

:14:59. > :15:02.years, they have guarded the piece here at York Minster, protecting the

:15:03. > :15:05.building and everyone in it on a daily basis. Specialist training for

:15:06. > :15:10.North Yorkshire Police means they will still hold the same powers of

:15:11. > :15:13.arrest as regular constables. From time to time, people have had a bit

:15:14. > :15:18.too much to drink or maybe just a little bit of disorder that has to

:15:19. > :15:24.be dealt with, and we have to be realistic that there could be a

:15:25. > :15:27.crime, so police officers are now trained to recognise that and how to

:15:28. > :15:31.deal with it appropriately and the right level. Cathedral constables

:15:32. > :15:35.were on the beach well before the police force was actually

:15:36. > :15:39.established in 1829. Since the 13th century they have held a vital role

:15:40. > :15:45.in securing York here, and that another few cathedrals like Chester

:15:46. > :15:49.and Lancashire. Last year they were professionally trained for the eight

:15:50. > :15:51.strong team he had the Minster. From disruptive visitors to serious

:15:52. > :15:57.criminals the team are now equipped for every situation but their

:15:58. > :16:02.central role remains to inform and advise the public. It has given us

:16:03. > :16:08.the tools to do the job, more proficiently. Should we encounter a

:16:09. > :16:14.situation we will know what to do, and we will have the confidence to

:16:15. > :16:17.carry out those actions. This week, North Yorkshire Police and the Dean

:16:18. > :16:19.of York signed a memorandum formally recognising their new role. The

:16:20. > :16:24.powers will come into force in May. Volunteers have spent the day

:16:25. > :16:27.planting thousands of trees across the Lake District to help

:16:28. > :16:30.restore woodland and provide some The National Trust's first mass

:16:31. > :16:33.planting will also help boost Mark McAlindon joined volunteers

:16:34. > :16:41.above the village of Braithwaite. On a winter morning perfect

:16:42. > :16:43.for planting trees, an army of volunteers marched up

:16:44. > :16:47.Coledale near Keswick to continue the task of restoring

:16:48. > :16:49.some natural tree and scrubland Over the course of this winter

:16:50. > :16:58.we've been planting This valley, along with lots in

:16:59. > :17:03.the Lake District, would have been wooded at one time,

:17:04. > :17:05.but for various reasons, farming, and there's

:17:06. > :17:07.a massive mine up there, one of the last

:17:08. > :17:10.working mines in the Lake District, so they would have cut

:17:11. > :17:12.down the trees for props, etc. Just about a mile down

:17:13. > :17:16.the back there's a village called Braithwaite, which

:17:17. > :17:18.last year unfortunately got really badly hit in the flood

:17:19. > :17:20.so trees will help to stabilise the soil and hopefully

:17:21. > :17:24.prevent these landslips from In all, across four lake

:17:25. > :17:27.district sites, 1,400 trees were being planted today alone,

:17:28. > :17:32.attracting volunteers keen If you live in such

:17:33. > :17:37.a beautiful place and enjoy the hills

:17:38. > :17:40.as much as I do, it just day a week just to

:17:41. > :17:43.help maintain them. Paths and walls and trees,

:17:44. > :17:46.just everything. The slopes of Coledale as you can

:17:47. > :17:56.see are extremely wet and boggy, so it's a question of what type

:17:57. > :17:59.of tree will thrive in these Well, this is aspen,

:18:00. > :18:01.alongside willow, volunteers

:18:02. > :18:02.planting hundreds of these because these types of tree

:18:03. > :18:05.will grow quite happily in wet soil. Aspen and willow grow quickly too,

:18:06. > :18:08.it won't be long before this valley, Just before the sport,

:18:09. > :18:17.Bradley Lowery, the five year-old Sunderland football fan who's

:18:18. > :18:23.terminally ill with cancer, has had some special

:18:24. > :18:25.visitors in hospital. The Black Cats' top scorer,

:18:26. > :18:27.Jermain Defoe, and goalkeeper Vito Mannone popped in to see

:18:28. > :18:29.Bradley, along with midfielder A photo of Bradley falling asleep

:18:30. > :18:36.cuddling Defoe has been liked by almost 60,000 people

:18:37. > :18:44.on social media. Yes, very moving -

:18:45. > :18:46.some things really are more important that football even

:18:47. > :18:49.when you're bottom of the league. Something I asked Sunderland boss

:18:50. > :18:52.David Moyes about at this afternoon's pre-match media

:18:53. > :18:56.conference. Footballers are actually

:18:57. > :18:57.good people, they do Sometimes the things that you hear

:18:58. > :19:15.about driving fast cars But our thoughts are with Bradley

:19:16. > :19:19.and his family all the time, But I'd just say that, you know,

:19:20. > :19:23.it does put things in perspective. Maybe it's good for the players

:19:24. > :19:25.to get away, get away from the constant sort of strain

:19:26. > :19:28.and pressure of being in here and then you actually see what it's

:19:29. > :19:31.really like in the real life, and as I said it was good

:19:32. > :19:35.on the players, but we'll just keep hoping and praying that

:19:36. > :19:37.Bradley keeps well. On the pitch Sunderland's surprise

:19:38. > :19:39.4-0 victory at Crystal Palace last weekend has given the players

:19:40. > :19:42.and the manager a much needed confidence boost ahead of tomorrow's

:19:43. > :19:44.Premier League clash with Southampton at

:19:45. > :19:45.the Stadium of Light. No one knows how much last

:19:46. > :19:49.week's win will affect the final outcome in May,

:19:50. > :19:51.but it's given renewed hope. With just two points

:19:52. > :19:53.separating the bottom six, a victory or two can make a huge

:19:54. > :19:55.difference. It can, and we've been

:19:56. > :19:58.in this position once or We've got to make sure we do,

:19:59. > :20:03.this time, and again, we're running out of games, so we've got

:20:04. > :20:06.to probably have a different mindset than maybe we

:20:07. > :20:08.have had in the past. The level of the performance
