:00:50. > :00:52.In sport, rallying cries from Moyes and Karanka as the Premier League

:00:53. > :00:55.And after toppling Brighton, can Championship leaders Newcastle

:00:56. > :01:12.beat a second big promotion rival in four days?

:01:13. > :01:14.He was a respected businessman, a headteacher

:01:15. > :01:24.And to many, Colin Gregg from Newcastle was a pillar

:01:25. > :01:26.of the community - the son of the founder

:01:27. > :01:29.But tonight he faces jail, his reputation in tatters: convicted

:01:30. > :01:33.by a jury of a string of sex attacks on boys, over almost thirty years.

:01:34. > :01:36.Our correspondent Peter Harris is outside Leeds Crown Court.

:01:37. > :01:49.Colin Gregg claimed he was the victim of some kind of police

:01:50. > :01:52.witchhunt, that the boys were liars, motivated by a desire for

:01:53. > :01:58.compensation. The jury hears sore straits without, which means there

:01:59. > :02:00.is justice at last. -- saw straight through it, which means there is

:02:01. > :02:02.justice at last for those victims. Do you think you owe the boys

:02:03. > :02:06.and apology, Mr Gregg? Why did you never admit

:02:07. > :02:12.what you done to them? The judge told him jail

:02:13. > :02:15.will be inevitable. Colin Gregg leaves

:02:16. > :02:20.Newcastle Crown Court. I have one statement

:02:21. > :02:28.to from Mr Gregg. I refer you to my statement

:02:29. > :02:31.of the 5th of July, Mr Gregg is a fervent

:02:32. > :02:34.believer in the fairness of the British justice system,

:02:35. > :02:36.and is confident that it will find him innocent

:02:37. > :02:39.of these unfounded charge. The 14-year-old alleged victim

:02:40. > :02:49.wasn't believed by the jury. The verdicts back then,

:02:50. > :02:50.perhaps unsurprising. He'd helped raise millions

:02:51. > :02:58.through the yellow Brick Road fund, He'd helped raise millions

:02:59. > :03:00.through the Yellow Brick Road fund, Back in the 60s, he'd helped build

:03:01. > :03:04.the family's bakery chain. He'd been a teacher,

:03:05. > :03:07.a headteacher and a social worker. But the suggestion of

:03:08. > :03:08.a dark side persisted. Soon after that first trial,

:03:09. > :03:13.in 1997, two more men came forward to allege they too had been abused

:03:14. > :03:20.by Colin Gregg in the 1960s. A judge back then decided those

:03:21. > :03:23.cases couldn't go any further. Former headmaster of a school

:03:24. > :03:33.in Tynemouth has been arrested on suspicion

:03:34. > :03:36.of a historic sexual offence. Police raided his home

:03:37. > :03:39.in Newcastle on Saturday. He was taken in for questioning,

:03:40. > :03:43.and has now been released on bail. We can now report that in 2016,

:03:44. > :03:50.Gregg went on trial accused of 26 counts of indecent assault on nine

:03:51. > :03:55.boys at Newcastle Crown Court. He was found not guilty

:03:56. > :03:59.on 11 of those charges, but the jury couldn't

:04:00. > :04:02.decide on others. And so, this year,

:04:03. > :04:05.a retrial was held in Leeds. This time, he was charged with nine

:04:06. > :04:08.counts of indecent assault on four boys over a period

:04:09. > :04:14.of almost 30 years. Gregg had denied abusing one boy

:04:15. > :04:19.in a swimming pool in the 60s, and others in the gym of his home

:04:20. > :04:22.after going four runs He'd said he was performing

:04:23. > :04:28.stretching exercises on them. One, then aged 11 or 12,

:04:29. > :04:32.described what happened to. I had a huge amount of respect

:04:33. > :04:36.and admiration for him. To think he might be up

:04:37. > :04:40.to wrong was inconceivable. I was absolutely mortified,

:04:41. > :04:48.and hugely embarrassed. The guilty verdicts

:04:49. > :04:51.bring justice at last. Colin Gregg was in a position

:04:52. > :04:54.of trust, which he used We hope today's outcome

:04:55. > :04:59.gives the victims some The case demonstrates its never too

:05:00. > :05:06.late to report abuse. Colin Gregg's reputation

:05:07. > :05:08.is now ruined. As the prosecution had always

:05:09. > :05:11.claimed, beneath the veneer of respectability lies

:05:12. > :05:26.an abuser of children. Let us hear Colin Gregg now in his

:05:27. > :05:29.own words. When interviewed by the police, he claimed these were

:05:30. > :05:30.copycat claims cobbled together from media coverage. This is what he told

:05:31. > :05:34.the police. Do you accept that there

:05:35. > :05:35.are distinct similarities between the previous people we've

:05:36. > :05:38.spoken about over the last few days, Effectively, in relation to all

:05:39. > :05:47.these people we have spoken to, is that your suggestion,

:05:48. > :05:55.that they have manufactured this based on what they have seen

:05:56. > :06:07.in the news, or read Colin Gregg has been released on

:06:08. > :06:10.bail tonight, but we'll be back in court at Newcastle Crown Court on

:06:11. > :06:14.the 30th of March for sentence and the judge has told he'll be going to

:06:15. > :06:20.prison. Peter Harris in Leeds, thank you.

:06:21. > :06:23.She had a short and tragic life of just 13 months.

:06:24. > :06:27.Three years later, we still don't know why Poppi Worthington died.

:06:28. > :06:29.But we do know a family court found she'd probably been sexually

:06:30. > :06:33.abused by her father - and he's never faced any charges.

:06:34. > :06:38.Now a catalogue of failures by Cumbria police, over the course

:06:39. > :06:41.of the investigation has been laid bare in a report

:06:42. > :06:42.by the Independent Police Complaints Commission.

:06:43. > :06:47.The blunders that marred the investigation into Poppi's death

:06:48. > :06:52.began the night officers were called to her home in December 2012.

:06:53. > :06:58.For instance, the child's last nappy was thrown out,

:06:59. > :07:17.The investigator found evidence that there had been an unstructured

:07:18. > :07:20.investigation, essentially not fit for purpose. We found concerns in

:07:21. > :07:22.relation to the scene where Poppi had been was managed.

:07:23. > :07:31.home just before six on the morning of December 12th, 2012.

:07:32. > :07:33.At 7.07 that morning she was declared dead

:07:34. > :07:35.at the Furness General Hospital in Barrow.

:07:36. > :07:37.The investigation then effectively went into cold storage for seven

:07:38. > :07:41.months while officers waited for pathology reports.

:07:42. > :07:43.On August 28 2013, Poppi's parents were arrested.

:07:44. > :07:52.Neither were charged with any offence Cumbria's Chief Constable

:07:53. > :07:57.admits it has been a shameful episode.

:07:58. > :08:04.There are basic things, I can only apologise to the family of Poppi for

:08:05. > :08:08.the basic mistakes made. I'm not running away, we are not running

:08:09. > :08:12.away from our inadequacies in this investigation. We're not trying to

:08:13. > :08:19.cover everything up. We're not trying to pretend it's better than

:08:20. > :08:25.it was. It was in a Dutch Redwood was an inadequate investigation, and

:08:26. > :08:27.I accept that. -- it was an inadequate investigation.

:08:28. > :08:30.family court hearing, a judge said Poppi was probably

:08:31. > :08:32.abused by her father, Paul Worthington.

:08:33. > :08:34.The IPCC report says there was enough evidence

:08:35. > :08:37.to arrest him on the day of Poppi's death, but delays meant he was later

:08:38. > :08:40.The police insist they have learned lessons.

:08:41. > :08:44.We have put in checks and balances to make sure no one can sit on a

:08:45. > :08:47.case of seven months. I'm confident it won't happen again in the same

:08:48. > :08:48.way, it will be challenged and picked up much quicker.

:08:49. > :08:50.And Mark's in our Carlisle studio now.

:08:51. > :08:52.So what's happened to the police officers involved in

:08:53. > :09:07.Two offices in particular are mentioned in this IP CC report, and

:09:08. > :09:14.neither ask that any producers. Duport says they were both

:09:15. > :09:19.responsible -- they are not spared any criticism. While the report says

:09:20. > :09:24.that Detective Superintendent Forrester should have faced a

:09:25. > :09:27.hearing for gross misconduct, he has retired and has faced no formal

:09:28. > :09:34.sanction for what went wrong during their investigation. Detective

:09:35. > :09:39.Inspector Amanda Sadler was given a hearing of gross incompetence, but

:09:40. > :09:47.not sacked. She has now left the force as well. There will also be a

:09:48. > :09:51.fresh inquest into Poppi's death held in May. There will be no fresh

:09:52. > :09:56.evidence, so it is possible we will never know what happened to Poppi in

:09:57. > :10:03.that night of December 2000 12. Mark, thank you. -- 2012.

:10:04. > :10:05.A man's been charged with murder after a body

:10:06. > :10:09.Craig Eade, who was 23, was found in a back lane

:10:10. > :10:13.Local man Paul Watkins, who's 36, has been charged

:10:14. > :10:15.with murder and is due before magistrates tomorrow.

:10:16. > :10:17.Many of us will remember its famous revolving dance floor.

:10:18. > :10:19.But the floating nightclub, the Tuxedo Royale, has

:10:20. > :10:23.The ship has been tied up at the dock - owned

:10:24. > :10:26.by Teesside company Able UK - since 2009 after its owner went

:10:27. > :10:30.Now, Middlesbrough council has agreed to share the costs with Able

:10:31. > :10:34.to have the ship scrapped, as Ian Reeve reports.

:10:35. > :10:39.The Tuxedo Royale partially sunk, listing, resting on the riverbed

:10:40. > :10:46.It's been here since 2009 after its owner went

:10:47. > :10:51.into administration, leaving it with no legal owner.

:10:52. > :10:58.But now Middlesbrough Council has a plan to remove the ship.

:10:59. > :11:01.We've decided to work Able, with the owner of the land and water

:11:02. > :11:03.that it's on to raise the ship and dismantle it.

:11:04. > :11:12.The Crown have denied all responsibility for it,

:11:13. > :11:15.the owners went bankrupt and left it on the land, so it's something that

:11:16. > :11:17.belongs to nobody that's been an eyesore for a long

:11:18. > :11:21.The ship gained some fame as a nightclub when it was berthed

:11:22. > :11:27.Its sister ship the Tuxedo Princess was also berthed there.

:11:28. > :11:37.The ship was originally named the TSS Dover and launched

:11:38. > :11:39.from Swan Hunter's Tyneside shipyard in 1965.

:11:40. > :11:42.It was one of the last steam turbine ships to be built -

:11:43. > :11:43.something that enthusiasts thought made it worth saving.

:11:44. > :11:49.However, the costs of doing so are too expensive.

:11:50. > :11:52.Two of the people who sadly haven't raised funds for it,

:11:53. > :11:55.one was looking at ?40 million, one was looking at ?14 million.

:11:56. > :11:57.The ship is also detracting from the development

:11:58. > :11:59.of the surrounding Middlehaven site, including a proposed

:12:00. > :12:21.I'm sure that has stirred a lot of memories for a lot of you.

:12:22. > :12:24.Now, imagine being told - for once - that one of your many bills

:12:25. > :12:28.Well that's the lucky situation some North East firms find themselves in.

:12:29. > :12:30.The government says a re-valuation of business rates -

:12:31. > :12:34.due to come into effect next month - will mean a drop in the amount

:12:35. > :12:37.But not everyone will be a winner and there are calls for fundamental

:12:38. > :12:41.The owner of this restaurant and cafe in Whitley Bay,

:12:42. > :12:44.on Tyneside, is about to receive a welcome boost.

:12:45. > :12:47.We were paying well over ?1000 a month for our business rates

:12:48. > :12:51.which was actually working out more than our rent, it was a huge outlay,

:12:52. > :13:01.It's now coming in at around ?350 a month.

:13:02. > :13:03.Another winner is this softplay and cafe -

:13:04. > :13:08.What I pay now is ?350 a month and what I should be paying

:13:09. > :13:11.when the new rates come in is zero, nothing, mine should

:13:12. > :13:23.Firms like these aren't likely to be the only ones

:13:24. > :13:27.business rates will go down across the North East by 11%

:13:28. > :13:32.Some firms will now pay nothing at all.

:13:33. > :13:39.But with having no notification, and it's due to come into effect

:13:40. > :13:41.on the first of April, we don't know where we are,

:13:42. > :13:44.where we stand, how much extra we're going to have to pay.

:13:45. > :13:47.And even if many firms here do well from revaluation,

:13:48. > :13:50.there are calls to change the business rates system.

:13:51. > :13:53.Government determines in advance how much money it wants to make out

:13:54. > :13:56.of this tax and then divides up which businesses are going

:13:57. > :14:03.There's no other tax that works in that same way,

:14:04. > :14:06.and it doesn't bear any relationship to businesses' ability to pay.

:14:07. > :14:09.Under pressure from firms losing out, the Chancellor may say more

:14:10. > :14:12.about business rates in his budget next week.

:14:13. > :14:15.But those who'll see bills go down are hoping the whole process

:14:16. > :14:23.And there's more on this story on Sunday Politics -

:14:24. > :14:27.that's on BBC One, this Sunday morning, at 11 o'clock.

:14:28. > :14:33.Dawn's here with all the weekend sport, plus: Does it sound

:14:34. > :14:38.We're hands on, at Teesside's first self-service bar, which opened

:14:39. > :14:50.A fair amount of rain this weekend, cloudy and sunny spells. I'll have

:14:51. > :14:57.the details later in the programme. A north Yorkshire pub

:14:58. > :15:02.which was saved from closure by locals has been crowned

:15:03. > :15:04.the best in Britain. People in Hudsdale in Richmondshire

:15:05. > :15:07.raised ?250,000 to save the George As Danni Hewson reports,

:15:08. > :15:11.as well as serving pints the pub also doubles as a library

:15:12. > :15:21.and village shop. Nobody expected awards. In fact,

:15:22. > :15:25.nine years ago just getting enough cash together to reopen the George

:15:26. > :15:30.and Dragon was a big enough hurdle. But we open it did, becoming the

:15:31. > :15:34.country's first community pub. Those involved admit, it's not always been

:15:35. > :15:40.easy. You will never keep everybody happy. We've had two landlords in

:15:41. > :15:43.that time. And the people, some people didn't like one think I don't

:15:44. > :15:47.like another. You'll never keep everyone happy, but that's the same

:15:48. > :15:52.with any pub. As long as we keep content, it's all right! It could so

:15:53. > :15:56.easily have been a different story, but the community came together to

:15:57. > :16:01.save this pub, and many of them have come here today to celebrate the

:16:02. > :16:06.power's success. On the half of Campaign for Real Ale, I would like

:16:07. > :16:14.to present the 2016 pub of the year award. -- on behalf. APPLAUSE

:16:15. > :16:22.With done a tremendous job to go from something that was closed in

:16:23. > :16:26.2008, reopened in 2010 and wins Pub Of The Year in 2016. Burdett,

:16:27. > :16:30.couldn't be better. Over 200 people from places as far away for as

:16:31. > :16:36.Australia own a piece of this pub. It doubles as a library and shop.

:16:37. > :16:45.The latter is staffed by volunteers and it's fun. It's fun. One or two

:16:46. > :16:49.of the customers, are a bit dour. He is well known and loved. As a

:16:50. > :16:55.landlord, he has plans to keep everyone happy. We have found a

:16:56. > :16:59.little farm in the village, actually a milking parlour for the cows. We

:17:00. > :17:05.are hopeful that this time next year, we will have a microbrewery as

:17:06. > :17:11.well. You could see our own beer on the bar. Phoenix from the ashes, not

:17:12. > :17:14.a bad name for the first cake. Does look pretty good, doesn't it?

:17:15. > :17:17.Staying with the drinking theme and for some it'll sound

:17:18. > :17:19.like an offer that's too good to be true.

:17:20. > :17:21.A pub that allows you to pull your own pints.

:17:22. > :17:24.Well a new bar has opened tonight, claiming to have

:17:25. > :17:27.It's in Stockton, it's called Thirsty Souls and it'll see

:17:28. > :17:31.He took some persuading - but we sent Stuart Whincup along

:17:32. > :17:46.When you're walking, it's like any new bar. It has a trendy interior,

:17:47. > :17:53.music playing, sofas and seats. Here is how it's different: when come to

:17:54. > :18:00.the bar, no need to queue. There is my ?5, last of the big spenders. I

:18:01. > :18:07.got my plastic card filled up. I put it in the little hole. I was once a

:18:08. > :18:13.very poor Barman, so here goes! Like a professional. I'm sure you move it

:18:14. > :18:17.about. I don't think I'd get a job. One man who came up with the idea

:18:18. > :18:21.joins me. How did this idea come about? It something other than

:18:22. > :18:26.looking out for a couple of years. We have four venues three venues

:18:27. > :18:29.across the road. People often experience something a bit

:18:30. > :18:33.different, so we have come up with a self-service beer war support people

:18:34. > :18:42.were surprised about this, they thought the outcome, no star. Tell

:18:43. > :18:45.me about it. We have staff at the counter to take payment, staff

:18:46. > :18:51.manning the wall, glass collectors, all drinks are monitored. Once you

:18:52. > :18:54.had four drinks, we will monitor your drinks and reactivate your

:18:55. > :18:59.card. It will stop people overindulging. We wish you the best

:19:00. > :19:03.of luck. My head I don't think is very good. John? Thank you very

:19:04. > :19:08.much, I will take yours. I will hand back to you, we will stay here for a

:19:09. > :19:12.bit. See you later. I'm sure he will! We have it on good authority

:19:13. > :19:17.that he used to work behind the bar at George and Dragon on Teesside...

:19:18. > :19:20.In his slippers! Yeah, he has that look about, hasn't he? He has, say

:19:21. > :19:23.no more. Well we normally kick off

:19:24. > :19:26.on a Friday with our But this week we thought we'd

:19:27. > :19:29.begin with a huge game After beating leaders Brighton

:19:30. > :19:33.on Tuesday to regain top spot, Newcastle United travel to third

:19:34. > :19:35.placed Huddersfield, knowing that victory would put some

:19:36. > :19:37.clear daylight between the automatic promotion places

:19:38. > :19:48.and the chasing pack. Until Newcastle's late comeback from

:19:49. > :19:52.1-0 down to winning 2-1 and then leaders biting on Tuesday night, to

:19:53. > :19:58.my's game was looking even more daunting. The way they play, a very

:19:59. > :20:01.good team. They press aggressively, good movements of the ball when they

:20:02. > :20:06.have it, so it's going to be a tough game. They are where they are for a

:20:07. > :20:11.reason. A fantastic run. At the same time, so are we. We had good results

:20:12. > :20:15.of late, and we need to make sure we go there with confidence we've

:20:16. > :20:19.picked up from the game the other night and hopefully as I say, good

:20:20. > :20:24.performance and three point. Much change Huddersfield may have lost

:20:25. > :20:30.heavily a magister city despite going ahead. But they have shown

:20:31. > :20:37.plenty of bite and consistency. -- Manchester City. The return of

:20:38. > :20:41.Dwight Gayle after month out. If you have a couple of chances, you can

:20:42. > :20:45.take one or two. It is important to the others, because you know that

:20:46. > :20:46.even sometimes about playing at the best level, he can make the

:20:47. > :20:48.difference. In the Premier League Middlesbrough

:20:49. > :20:51.are away at Mid table Stoke City tomorrow and boss Aitor Karanka

:20:52. > :20:53.says his side must approach every game from now until the end

:22:09. > :22:11.in some of the big games, Liverpool played well,

:22:12. > :22:20.Tottenham played well. We've got to make sure

:22:21. > :22:24.we do that again. It's a tough call,

:24:04. > :24:07.and we're got something up our sleeve in case Saracens

:24:12. > :24:15.club Newcastle Thunder travel to Workington in their first game

:24:19. > :24:20.beat Town in the third round of the Challenge Cup

:24:21. > :24:23.at Kingston Park last weekend, they know Workington will be

:24:24. > :24:26.a different prospect away from home. We know going across to their place,

:24:27. > :24:29.it will be a lot tougher. I mean, we played there are few

:24:30. > :24:32.times and its hostile. Tough place to go, but I suppose

:24:33. > :24:35.if we keep talking about making the play-offs and getting promoted

:24:36. > :24:38.and fighting for all these nice things, we've got to go places

:24:54. > :25:03.looking forward to it. Should be a good one. Time for a

:25:04. > :25:07.good Dutch overtime for the weather. I don't like the look of that rain!

:25:08. > :25:12.It's not as bad as it blocks. We will see some rain at times this

:25:13. > :25:16.weekend. It's ready with most of the north-east and Cumbria. It will be

:25:17. > :25:20.fairly cloudy. Some outbreaks of rain, but there should be some

:25:21. > :25:23.sunshine as well. Do this evening and overnight, unquestionably we

:25:24. > :25:26.have the rain with us. It will be heavy at times, quite a breeze

:25:27. > :25:30.coming in from the east, but as we progress through the night, the rain

:25:31. > :25:35.breaks up. There will be mist and mud patches, further rain into

:25:36. > :25:41.Cumbria by the time we get to dawn, -- murky patches. It will be a slow

:25:42. > :25:47.start tomorrow morning, quite wept at the start of the day. Gradually

:25:48. > :25:50.that rain will push away and by Saturday afternoon, we look a lot

:25:51. > :25:54.better. More dry and bright with spells of sunshine. Across Cumbria

:25:55. > :25:58.on Saturday afternoon, it will be fairly cloudy. Temperatures around

:25:59. > :26:03.eight Celsius. For the north-east, we are more likely to see some

:26:04. > :26:06.spells of sunshine. Temperatures around eight or 9 degrees. Not

:26:07. > :26:12.actually feeling too bad in that sunshine. The cloud will tend to

:26:13. > :26:15.come and go throughout the day. Through Saturday night, its great to

:26:16. > :26:18.start with but we will see some further showers pushing into

:26:19. > :26:22.Cumbria, eventually spreading across to the north-east as we go through

:26:23. > :26:26.the night. It will be fairly mild, the temperature falling back to

:26:27. > :26:30.around five Celsius. Sunday looks like another fairly mixed day. We

:26:31. > :26:34.have showers to start with, but there will be some brighter spells

:26:35. > :26:37.as well. The best of the brightness across the north-east, but will

:26:38. > :26:41.become cloudy by the afternoon. We all see some showers at some point

:26:42. > :26:48.on Sunday. Temperatures fairly on the mild side, around eight Celsius,

:26:49. > :26:52.46 Fahrenheit. The breeze is coming from the south. That is Sunday, what

:26:53. > :26:57.about Monday and Tuesday? Monday looks like another fairly unsubtle

:26:58. > :27:02.day. We will see some spells of rain at times, mostly in the form of

:27:03. > :27:07.showers. -- unsettled day. Temperatures around single figures,

:27:08. > :27:13.it all 7 degrees. Lots of cloud and Tuesday. For Cumbria, will start on

:27:14. > :27:16.a wet note tomorrow, but things will start to brighten up, temperatures

:27:17. > :27:21.into double figures by the afternoon. For Sunday, some spells

:27:22. > :27:25.of rain but we should see some sunny spells in between. Similar for the

:27:26. > :27:29.north-east, not too bad. A wet start to the weekend, some showers on

:27:30. > :27:33.Sunday but in between, plenty of dry and bright weather. Thank you very

:27:34. > :27:37.much! A couple of weeks ago saying it's spring already! That's the one

:27:38. > :27:40.for you, isn't it? Comes and goes. Have a great weekend. I will see you

:27:41. > :27:46.on Monday. Goodbye.
