:00:17. > :00:18.a mother and grandmother died after a botched heart operation.

:00:19. > :00:23.I couldn't believe that they were just keeping so many things from us

:00:24. > :00:25.and lying to us and being so deceitful.

:00:26. > :00:27.A life sentence for a man who murdered his former partner

:00:28. > :00:51.In sport, tonight - Newcastle United could set a club

:00:52. > :00:54.record for the number of away wins in a single season.

:00:55. > :01:04.the Magpies' manager has already picked up a trophy.

:01:05. > :01:07.Her family said she was the picture of health.

:01:08. > :01:10.Sheila Hynes was 71 - a mother, grandmother

:01:11. > :01:15.In 2015, she went into Newcastle's Freeman Hospital

:01:16. > :01:21.But she died after a valve in her heart was inserted the wrong way.

:01:22. > :01:29.Her family say her human rights were breached and they're

:01:30. > :01:34.Our News Correspondent Mark Denten has Sheila's story.

:01:35. > :01:37.Laughing and joking with her friends.

:01:38. > :01:40.This is Sheila Hynes, the very picture of health.

:01:41. > :01:44.She was a lovely woman, wonderful mother, wonderful grandmother.

:01:45. > :01:56.But Sheila, who was 71, began to feel breathless, she was admitted

:01:57. > :01:57.to the Freeman Hospital for an operation

:01:58. > :02:05.A routine procedure, regarded as having just a 6% risk.

:02:06. > :02:09.The response I got from the nurse when I phoned,

:02:10. > :02:16.She started to say, "where'd you live?"

:02:17. > :02:22.And she said, there's been complications in the surgery.

:02:23. > :02:25.Sheila Hynes had her operation on March 26 2015

:02:26. > :02:31.It emerged that during her surgery, a valve in her heart had been

:02:32. > :02:40.When they checked her, her heart ballooned up on one side.

:02:41. > :02:44.When they removed the valve, it forced a piece of equipment

:02:45. > :02:52.The next time her heart ballooned up, it basically

:02:53. > :02:57.The family say, while Sheila was fighting for her life,

:02:58. > :03:10.they were treated with gross insensitivity.

:03:11. > :03:12.We were told, it wasn't our choice to turn my

:03:13. > :03:16.We said... We were told we had no say in that.

:03:17. > :03:19.In the same meeting, the secretary who was taking notes

:03:20. > :03:21.announced that she already had the coroner booked.

:03:22. > :03:23.This is while your mother is still alive?

:03:24. > :03:40.We applied to the coroner to have it look that as an Article II ninquest

:03:41. > :03:43.and what that means is it a human rights consideration that Mrs Hynes

:03:44. > :03:46.lost her right to life as a result of this.

:03:47. > :03:49.This tragic event should never have occurred.

:03:50. > :03:51.Newcastle Hospital Trust has admitted the error

:03:52. > :03:53.and says its thoughts are with the family.

:03:54. > :03:58.They say a full independent investigation has taken place.

:03:59. > :04:02.An inquest into Sheila Hynes' death will take place in June.

:04:03. > :04:07.Mark Denten, BBC look North, outside the Freeman Hospital in Newcastle.

:04:08. > :04:11.It was "a murder of quite unusual savagery and brutality."

:04:12. > :04:17.That's how the judge sentencing a man to life in jail described

:04:18. > :04:20.the attack which led to the death of a mum of two

:04:21. > :04:26.Miklos Verebes will serve a minimum of 28 years after using used a sharp

:04:27. > :04:30.stone to stab his former partner Melinda Korosi almost 30 times.

:04:31. > :04:36.During sentencing the judge also raised concern about the contact

:04:37. > :04:38.Cumbria Police had with Ms Korosi before her death.

:04:39. > :04:48.Megan Paterson was in court, Megan this was an horrific attack.

:04:49. > :04:58.Last September Miklos Verebes broke into the home of Melinda Korosi,

:04:59. > :05:01.Neighbours called the police when the heard her screaming,

:05:02. > :05:04.but when officers arrived just four minutes later she was already

:05:05. > :05:06.dead with Miklos Verebes beside her covered in blood.

:05:07. > :05:09.At the time he admitted killing her, but later in court tried to claim

:05:10. > :05:16.In sentencing today the judge said that excuse was 'absurd'.

:05:17. > :05:18.The police today welcomed the sentence given and also read

:05:19. > :05:26.a statement from Melinda Korosi's father:

:05:27. > :05:34.When detectives came to tell me the news, I thought the earth had been

:05:35. > :05:39.removed from under my feet and everything became empty and

:05:40. > :05:43.meaningless. I couldn't believe in something this terrible. If I see a

:05:44. > :05:45.mother walking with their child down a street, I have tears in my eyes. I

:05:46. > :05:51.have a very deep pain in my heart. Melinda Korosi died in September

:05:52. > :05:53.but the relationship had been That's right, the couple originally

:05:54. > :05:59.from Hungary moved to Carlisle in 2012 between then and 2016

:06:00. > :06:01.Miklos Verebes raped Just two days before

:06:02. > :06:11.he murdered her he was released from prison on license

:06:12. > :06:17.for attacking her in July. The judge described Verebes

:06:18. > :06:21.as 'a domineering and controlling' who expected 'unquestionable

:06:22. > :06:24.obedience from his partner' and when that didn't

:06:25. > :06:26.happen he was violent. There was criticism from the judge

:06:27. > :06:31.about how the rape allegations Yes, while Verebes was in prison

:06:32. > :06:37.Melinda Korosi came forward to police and told them she'd been

:06:38. > :06:40.raped, and just hours after his release in September

:06:41. > :06:43.he was arrested in relation to those allegations but he wasn't charged

:06:44. > :06:46.and today in court the judge said he could not 'begin to understand

:06:47. > :06:48.whey he was released'. That matter is now being

:06:49. > :06:51.investigated by the Independent Police Complaints Commission

:06:52. > :06:53.and we're told Cumbria Constabulary is fully

:06:54. > :07:00.cooperating with that matter. Detectives are still hunting two men

:07:01. > :07:04.who abducted a woman and a toddler from a busy street

:07:05. > :07:09.in broad daylight, before subjecting The attack happened on a popular

:07:10. > :07:16.seafront in Redcar on Friday lunchtime, prompting

:07:17. > :07:18.a huge police investigation. Earlier today, officers made

:07:19. > :07:21.an arrest - but that man's been Our reporter Jim Knight

:07:22. > :07:33.is at the scene now. As you say, I'm sure the police were

:07:34. > :07:37.hoping that when they made that arrest today it was going to

:07:38. > :07:41.actually begin to bring some fruition to the long investigation

:07:42. > :07:46.they've mounted ever since that violent attack on Friday night. At

:07:47. > :07:52.lunchtime when they released a statement saying that a local man

:07:53. > :07:57.had been arrested on suspicion of rape, hopes were raised. That man

:07:58. > :08:01.was still being questioned. We found out a short time ago that he has

:08:02. > :08:06.been released without charge so it could be back to square one. To

:08:07. > :08:15.remind you about the attack. It happened in broad daylight on the

:08:16. > :08:20.Redcar seafront here. The woman who was with a toddler was dragged,

:08:21. > :08:27.screaming, into a dark coloured saloon car by two men and driven to

:08:28. > :08:34.a secluded area in a nearby village. There she was raped and subjected to

:08:35. > :08:42.a six-hour ordeal. Then the men dumped the woman and the toddler on

:08:43. > :08:49.the outskirts of Reading. Police say that the toddler was unharmed. You

:08:50. > :08:52.may have seen the crime reported on TV last night. It's not clear

:08:53. > :08:58.whether information from the programme last night has led to this

:08:59. > :09:01.arrest. Because this abduction happened in broad daylight in the

:09:02. > :09:02.middle of the day, police are hopeful that more people will come

:09:03. > :09:06.forward. Two people who were jailed

:09:07. > :09:09.for their part in the murder of a Newcastle man with learning

:09:10. > :09:11.difficulties have had James Wheatley was jailed for life

:09:12. > :09:15.in December last year But prosecutors argued

:09:16. > :09:20.that the sentences handed to Wheatley's girlfriend,

:09:21. > :09:23.his mother - and another man - This afternoon the Court of Appeal

:09:24. > :09:31.agreed on two counts. Julie Mills, James Wheatley's

:09:32. > :09:34.mother, had her sentence for causing or allowing the death of Lee Irving,

:09:35. > :09:40.increased from 8 years to 10 years and Nicole Lawrence, his girlfriend,

:09:41. > :09:42.had her sentence increased from Barry Imray's sentence

:09:43. > :09:49.of three years was unchanged. A short time ago I spoke

:09:50. > :09:52.to the Solicitor General Robert Buckland and asked him if he felt

:09:53. > :09:55.the sentences now reflect Well, no sentence can

:09:56. > :10:00.bring back the life lost but the Court of Appeal,

:10:01. > :10:07.I think, have considered the cases very carefully and have decided

:10:08. > :10:10.to increase them because they, like me, view offences like this

:10:11. > :10:15.with great seriousness and I'm satisfied that as a result of this

:10:16. > :10:29.hearing today, a higher degree There was an awful lot of local

:10:30. > :10:34.feeling about this crime. I'm aware that the local Newcastle,

:10:35. > :10:44.indeed the whole north-east by what happened and I think

:10:45. > :10:48.it was right that I looked carefully at this case and then decided

:10:49. > :10:51.to bring it forward to the judges who today have independently decided

:10:52. > :11:01.that the sentences should go up. A 19 year old man's been charged

:11:02. > :11:05.with a murder in York. The dead man has been named

:11:06. > :11:08.as Shaun Skelton who was 53 and lived in Holgate Road

:11:09. > :11:09.in the city. Daniel Thomas Reed, who's 19

:11:10. > :11:12.and of no fixed abode, appeared before the city magistrates

:11:13. > :11:14.and was remaned in custody Plans to build a school,

:11:15. > :11:18.a retail park and hundreds of homes on the site of the current

:11:19. > :11:21.Northumberland County Council Protestors outside County Hall

:11:22. > :11:24.in Morpeth said the proposals would destroy the town's

:11:25. > :11:25.historic character. But Labour councillors insist

:11:26. > :11:28.redeveloping the 37 acres of land, and moving the headquarters

:11:29. > :11:30.to Ashington, will save money The prisons watchdog

:11:31. > :11:34.has raised concerns Inspectors say it's "unacceptable"

:11:35. > :11:40.that most inmates at the city centre jail had to eat their meals

:11:41. > :11:43.in their cells by an They also found that 60%

:11:44. > :11:50.of prisoners felt unsafe. The city's MP today raised those

:11:51. > :11:53.concerns in parliament and said matters were made worse

:11:54. > :11:55.by a reduction in the Does the Secretary of State agree

:11:56. > :12:04.with be that it's hard for prison staff to keep themselves and

:12:05. > :12:07.prisoners safe with numbers being so reduced and what she going to do

:12:08. > :12:10.to improve prisoner safety now? The honourable lady

:12:11. > :12:17.is absolutely right about the concerning report about

:12:18. > :12:21.HMP Durham and we are addressing issues about recruitment in that

:12:22. > :12:23.prison, along with prisons What we have done is created

:12:24. > :12:28.2000 new positions at a more senior grade for experienced

:12:29. > :12:31.officers with mental health training, with other types of

:12:32. > :12:34.training and those positions will be available in Durham which will help

:12:35. > :12:37.us retain some of our experienced Few hospitals in England have been

:12:38. > :12:50.plagued with as many troubles as the West Cumberland Hospital

:12:51. > :12:52.in Whitehaven. And after months of protest, worry

:12:53. > :12:55.and consultation, tomorrow is D-Day. Health bosses are to

:12:56. > :12:56.announce radical proposals They include the possibility

:12:57. > :12:59.of moving consultant-led maternity care to Carlisle,

:13:00. > :13:01.along with urgent children's care, It was the first hospital

:13:02. > :13:10.built in England But the West Cumberland Hospital

:13:11. > :13:18.in Whitehaven, has been plagued with problems for decades,

:13:19. > :13:19.Initially major financial woes, and then increasing

:13:20. > :13:28.problems around recruitment After a report revealing

:13:29. > :13:31.worryingly high high death rates in 2013 saw North

:13:32. > :13:34.Cumbria University Hospitals Trust - Infirmary in Carlisle put

:13:35. > :13:43.into special measures. Inspection teams went into hospitals

:13:44. > :13:48.with worrying death rates... That same year,

:13:49. > :13:50.patients suffering trauma, needing emergency or complex high

:13:51. > :13:53.risk surgery, alongwith cardiac care would be transferred

:13:54. > :13:55.from Whitehaven to Carlisle's In 2014 thousands protested

:13:56. > :14:03.against losing services, and over fears the hospital

:14:04. > :14:05.could more - including We want to keep the services we have

:14:06. > :14:18.here. In 2105,

:14:19. > :14:20.the Care Quality Commission announced the trust would have

:14:21. > :14:26.to remain in special measures. A specialist government team,

:14:27. > :14:32.the Success Regime was brought Well, controversially it

:14:33. > :14:41.includes changes to: maternity services -

:14:42. > :14:43.and the possibility of moving Consultant-led maternity

:14:44. > :14:47.From Whitehaven to Carlisle Potentially also moving emergency

:14:48. > :14:54.children's care across to Carlisle And possibly centralising

:14:55. > :15:15.stroke care at Carlisle The decision on what happens will be

:15:16. > :15:21.announced tomorrow. The decision will be made tomorrow by health

:15:22. > :15:27.bosses and that is rubber-stamped by the council, we understand, on the

:15:28. > :15:31.27th March. They'll so have the option of referring it back to the

:15:32. > :15:38.government. It was a big issue in the Copeland by-election. Didn't all

:15:39. > :15:43.the candidates promised to fight to maintain services? It was really

:15:44. > :15:46.essential. As you said, all the candidates made a commitment to

:15:47. > :15:53.fight for services, to fight for accident and emergency, consultant

:15:54. > :15:57.led maternity, when we talk about consultant led maternity, we're

:15:58. > :16:03.talking about a senior doctor on hand should there be convocations

:16:04. > :16:10.during delivery. The Conservative's winning Caribbean -- candidate won

:16:11. > :16:17.support from Theresa May when she promised a review of recruitment

:16:18. > :16:22.before decisions were made. She spoke to Sunday politics before the

:16:23. > :16:26.by-election. I've been speaking with the health minister and we have

:16:27. > :16:34.agreed in writing that there will be a professionally, government backed

:16:35. > :16:42.review, before any decision is made. Trudy Harrison has now told the BBC

:16:43. > :16:46.that she made a promise for a review before any decision was made but

:16:47. > :16:52.she's been told that the community don't want a halt to the process and

:16:53. > :16:58.now she is saying that she will have a review of the situation after the

:16:59. > :17:02.decision has been implemented. She will look at retention of staff as

:17:03. > :17:06.well. There are no details about that review. This time tomorrow, we

:17:07. > :17:10.will have the decision. Thank you. A new 19 million pound

:17:11. > :17:12.hospital will, it's claimed, be the first phase of a major health

:17:13. > :17:15.village planned for Teesside. It's being built at Acklam Hall

:17:16. > :17:18.in Middlesbrough, and will be run by a private health company

:17:19. > :17:31.which is expanding Taking shape, a new ?19 million

:17:32. > :17:38.hospital. This is what it will look like. It will have 90 beds, three

:17:39. > :17:44.operating theatres and will treat private and NHS patients. Over the

:17:45. > :17:50.past ten years, we've led up to delivering health care to about

:17:51. > :17:55.27,000 patients per year, outpatients and day case procedures.

:17:56. > :18:01.In the new facility, will be increasing that by another 30%.

:18:02. > :18:05.Middlesbrough Council had been criticised for selling off the land

:18:06. > :18:10.and above all too cheaply but the owners say they have spent ?4

:18:11. > :18:15.million repairing the grade one listed building and has invested

:18:16. > :18:23.heavily in the building which will create new jobs. It's a massive new

:18:24. > :18:29.scheme. It's pretty daunting and significant. We've always planned to

:18:30. > :18:34.have a health village of some sort. This is the first stage of this. The

:18:35. > :18:49.hospital is expected to be completed and opened by the end of this year.

:18:50. > :18:52.Fifty years ago this week, the North Yorkshire city of Ripon

:18:53. > :18:54.lost what many regarded as a vital service.

:18:55. > :18:56.Its railway closed, leaving it the only city in Yorkshire

:18:57. > :18:59.to have no direct link to Britain's rail network.

:19:00. > :19:02.It's a loss which campaigners continue to challenge and still hope

:19:03. > :19:09.It's an historic city where many still mourn the loss

:19:10. > :19:14.Until 1967, the people of Ripon had this.

:19:15. > :19:23.It's exactly 50 years since trains were last seen in Ripon

:19:24. > :19:26.and for 30 of those years, the present mayor has been

:19:27. > :19:33.A rail link really would make all the difference.

:19:34. > :19:35.Over a million visitors come to Ripon annually,

:19:36. > :19:41.And we know that 200,000 people a year would come to Ripon by rail.

:19:42. > :19:43.All the proposals are directed towards making the railways do those

:19:44. > :19:50.Richard Beeching's controversial recommendations in the 1960s that

:19:51. > :20:00.With the line to Ripon one of many closed on his advice.

:20:01. > :20:03.Today, the rail lines to Ripon have gone and the station here has been

:20:04. > :20:13.After 50 years without trains, though, would the residents of Ripon

:20:14. > :20:21.Yes. It would be ideal to have it back.

:20:22. > :20:24.I personally think the money could be spent more wisely in other areas.

:20:25. > :20:28.We've got a good bus service but it would be nice to have the option

:20:29. > :20:32.A new feasibility study into reopening the line to Ripon has

:20:33. > :20:43.With the quoting journey times between Ripon and leads of 36

:20:44. > :20:48.It claims demand for the service would be high.

:20:49. > :20:50.When the line closed, the population of Ripon was 8000.

:20:51. > :20:53.By 2025, the population of Ripon will be 20 5000.

:20:54. > :20:56.And 65% of those, we know, will commute out of Ripon each day.

:20:57. > :21:06.The latest feasibility study will be conflict by September

:21:07. > :21:10.with campaigners confident this bygone era can be

:21:11. > :21:23.My mum and dad lived in Ripon at the time. I bet they missed the train

:21:24. > :21:25.link. Great old pictures. Now the sport.

:21:26. > :21:28.It's almost a year since Rafa Benitez first arrived on Tyneside,

:21:29. > :21:30.taking Steve McClaren's place as manager of Newcastle United.

:21:31. > :21:33.The Spaniard couldn't prevent the Magpies from dropping out

:21:34. > :21:36.But he looks almost certain to take them straight back up,

:21:37. > :21:40.And - ahead of tonight's trip to Reading - he's already

:21:41. > :21:42.collected his first trophy of the season.

:21:43. > :21:48.He couldn't be at last night's black tie dinner

:21:49. > :21:51.at Newcastle Civic Centre - the small matter of another

:21:52. > :21:55.And, if all goes well, another step on the road to promotion.

:21:56. > :21:59.So the Sport Newcastle organisation arranged their own

:22:00. > :22:01.pre-match presentation, naming Rafa Benitez their

:22:02. > :22:12.It gives me tremendous honour to give you this because you have

:22:13. > :22:17.brought back pride to the club, to the city, and the area and we

:22:18. > :22:24.appreciate it so much because it's been a rough time. I know you're

:22:25. > :22:29.going to succeed. Thank you very much. It's a great honour for me to

:22:30. > :22:35.receive this award. On behalf of myself and my staff, the players,

:22:36. > :22:41.everyone. When the manager receives this kind of award it means that a

:22:42. > :22:44.lot of people have been helping him to achieve.

:22:45. > :22:47.The rest of the Championship has spent much of the season

:22:48. > :22:50.With an 11-point cushion between the leaders and third-placed

:22:51. > :22:52.Huddersfield, who they beat at the weekend, it's hard

:22:53. > :22:59.But Benitez is taking nothing for granted.

:23:00. > :23:08.In one week, everything changed for us. In one week, it can change. We
