:00:28. > :00:31.It comes after the company warned that the Brexit vote might
:00:32. > :00:32.jeopardise future investment at the Sunderland plant.
:00:33. > :00:41.It's very difficult to make decisions in terms of investments
:00:42. > :00:44.or envision the future if you don't know how the relationship
:00:45. > :00:51.is going to be between the TK and the main partner,
:00:52. > :00:54.the main trade partner of the UK, which is the rest of Europe.
:00:55. > :00:57.Gerry Jackson joins us live from Nissan's Sunderland plant.

:01:04. > :01:10.A lot of politicians were sliling as well, because less than two weeks
:01:11. > :01:14.ago, the MP was in Downing Street demanding promises of compensation
:01:15. > :01:21.if Nissan were to be hit by extra trade tariffs by the EU post Brexit.
:01:22. > :01:26.Around 80% of cars go for export mainly to Europe. So relief all
:01:27. > :01:29.round today when the 7000 workers here and 40,000 in the supply chain
:01:30. > :01:31.were told their jobs could be secured for years to come.
:01:32. > :01:34.We've seen the shift changes and the mood changes at Nissan
:01:35. > :01:45.I've been here 25 year and I hope it's going to be
:01:46. > :01:49.Great news for myself personally and for the region as a whole.
:01:50. > :01:52.It brings job security again, plan for the future,
:01:53. > :01:54.because if Nissan went down, that would be it, the North East
:01:55. > :01:58.We stopped the production lhne at 11 o'clock, which,
:01:59. > :02:01.believe me, is a big thing, to stop the manufacturing c`r plant.
:02:02. > :02:04.We pulled all the workforce together and we gave them the good ndws
:02:05. > :02:07.that we had the new Qashqai secured and we also brought
:02:08. > :02:09.the news of X-trail, which was a complete
:02:10. > :02:13.So you can imagine the cheers for Qashqai, third-generation
:02:14. > :02:16.Qashqai, and you can imagind the surprise and the real ddlight,
:02:17. > :02:18.and there's an absolute buzz going through the whole
:02:19. > :02:22.The headline - Nissan has committed to build not just one
:02:23. > :02:29.This is the five-seater Qashqai that we're so familiar with,
:02:30. > :02:34.one of the first successful crossover vehicles in the UK.
:02:35. > :02:37.But it will be the updated version of this, the X-trail that whll also
:02:38. > :02:42.Seven seats aimed squarely `t active families, and they're hoping to sell
:02:43. > :02:48.Today's news came amid intense speculation about the futurd
:02:49. > :02:53.Less than a fortnight ago, Nissan had been locked in t`lks
:02:54. > :02:59.It had demanded compensation for any punitive tariffs imposed
:03:00. > :03:08.So what was offered by the Government?
:03:09. > :03:12.The Nissan man was choosing his words carefully.
:03:13. > :03:15.We are in a constant dialogte with the Government, as we have been
:03:16. > :03:18.We've been here a long time, the Government made support
:03:19. > :03:22.and assurances to Nissan to bring us here, and we've faced a lot
:03:23. > :03:24.of adversity between the Government and Nissan.
:03:25. > :03:28.This is just another one of those adversities in the process of making
:03:29. > :03:32.But in terms of something that can satisfy you in terms of hard cash?
:03:33. > :03:34.Because tariffs would have been hard cash.
:03:35. > :03:36.What has the Government offered you to offset
:03:37. > :03:42.Nissan's not interested in hard cash as a solution to a problem.
:03:43. > :03:46.Today's announcement potenthally assures carmaking here
:03:47. > :03:49.until the mid-2020s, well after Brexit.
:03:50. > :03:54.But there was one note of caution from the local MP.
:03:55. > :03:56.Those conversations obviously need to continue with the rest
:03:57. > :03:59.of the car industry, with the rest of the manufacturing
:04:00. > :04:03.sector across the North East and the whole of the UK.
:04:04. > :04:06.All other companies in other parts of the country are just
:04:07. > :04:11.It's the best news I've had, I think, in all
:04:12. > :04:21.It's not just on Wearside that today's announcement
:04:22. > :04:25.There are a number of companies throughout the region who rdly
:04:26. > :04:29.Our business correspondent Han Reeve has been to one in Eaglesclhffe
:04:30. > :04:36.A decision that affects Sunderland, but new models at Nissan's plant
:04:37. > :04:40.will also be celebrated here on Teesside.
:04:41. > :04:43.This car parts company is p`rt of the supply chain that
:04:44. > :04:52.It's not just wonderful news for us being a current supplier.
:04:53. > :04:56.I think for the whole region, the whole sector
:04:57. > :04:59.and for the country, it's a very positive sign.
:05:00. > :05:02.It's the first major indication of confidence in the UK
:05:03. > :05:08.But what will new Qashqai and new X-trail models
:05:09. > :05:14.We'll bid for the new busindss and hopefully retain and hopefully
:05:15. > :05:17.increase the level of busindss that we get on the new model,
:05:18. > :05:26.so that will safeguard and possibly increase the number of jobs.
:05:27. > :05:29.It'll further enhance our prospects for investment in new machines.
:05:30. > :05:31.The workforce here currentlx stands at 650.
:05:32. > :05:34.Thanks to today's decision by Nissan, it will stay at that
:05:35. > :05:36.And, as we heard, there's now the possibility of more
:05:37. > :05:57.So we don't know what sealed the deal between the Government and
:05:58. > :06:01.Nissan. The company says no safeguards, no compensation has been
:06:02. > :06:03.offered. But subsidies, incdntives, investment aid. None of those are
:06:04. > :06:06.new ideas when it comes to new ideas when it comes to
:06:07. > :06:11.attracting and keeping vital industries. We might be heading out
:06:12. > :06:18.of Europe but they turn out a Nissan Qashqai here every 62 seconds at
:06:19. > :06:22.your's most efficient car plant This place is earning its kdep and
:06:23. > :06:24.our government cannot afford to see that change. Thank you.
