:00:28. > :00:30.including those formerly known as legal highs.

:00:31. > :00:32.Extra money will also be spent treating inmates

:00:33. > :00:37.with addictions, as Lee Johnson reports.

:00:38. > :00:40.Drugs have always been rife inside our prisons.

:00:44. > :00:47.In recent years, new psychoactive substances, formerly

:00:48. > :00:49.known as legal highs, have become more popular

:00:50. > :00:55.I've seen a lot of people flopping about, in the three years.

:00:56. > :01:01.It happens on a day-to-day basis sometimes.

:01:02. > :01:04.Jails have been here a lot of years, and they've never stopped

:01:05. > :01:07.them in all them years, so how are they going to do it now?

:01:08. > :01:10.Staff at Holme House have described one drug, Spice -

:01:11. > :01:12.a synthetic cannabis - as the biggest threat

:01:13. > :01:15.It's a massive problem, and it's dangerous,

:01:16. > :01:19.because people under the influence of it are unpredictable.

:01:20. > :01:22.They seem to get superhuman strength as well.

:01:23. > :01:25.There's been a number of times staff of had to go off duty

:01:26. > :01:30.because they've inhaled the toxins that Spice has given off.

:01:31. > :01:32.The most common way drugs get into our prisons

:01:33. > :01:35.is through prisoners or visitors smuggling them in.

:01:36. > :01:39.Anyone coming here to Holme House has to go through a security system.

:01:40. > :01:42.But the prison's been given millions of pounds to invest in new,

:01:43. > :01:45.full-body scanners and other security measures to try and crack

:01:46. > :01:51.It's in the hope of making Holme House completely drug free.

:01:52. > :01:54.Earlier this year, the Government handed some prison governors

:01:55. > :01:58.Holme House is among the first in the scheme.

:01:59. > :02:01.The man running the jail has extra resources to try

:02:02. > :02:05.Over the course of three years, it'll be approaching

:02:06. > :02:09.That's going to be significant in terms of doing the best

:02:10. > :02:13.that we can to prevent drugs coming into the prison and help them get

:02:14. > :02:16.off drugs and lead drug-free lives when they leave prison.

:02:17. > :02:19.Do you think it's possible to make Holme House 100% drug-free?

:02:20. > :02:21.We're going to talk about people leading drug-free lives,

:02:22. > :02:24.and we're going to do whatever we possibly can to make

:02:25. > :02:26.that possible while they're in the prison.

:02:27. > :02:28.And we're going to do whatever we can tosupport them

:02:29. > :02:32.when they get out of prison at the end.

:02:33. > :02:35.We're going to make sure we use that public money as smartly and wisely

:02:36. > :02:40.The POA has welcomed this news, this extra funding means there'll be

:02:41. > :02:43.an extra 50 members of staff coming to work here at Holme House

:02:44. > :02:47.They'll be a mixture of officers and drug workers.

:02:48. > :02:49.There's going to be an emphasis on drug treatment here,

:02:50. > :02:51.for prisoners both inside and outside the jail.

:02:52. > :02:55.The POA says that's positive step, and says in the last three years

:02:56. > :02:57.it's lost a third of its workforce here,

:02:58. > :02:59.so any extra members of staff coming into the system,

:03:00. > :03:02.at a time when there's unrest in prisons across the country,

:03:03. > :03:06.Meanwhile, management say the new security should

:03:07. > :03:08.be here and in place by spring next year.

:07:32. > :07:38.After surviving his first Christmas in Newcastle's Freeman hospital,

:07:39. > :07:41.his family have finally been allowed to take him home.

:07:42. > :07:48.Baby Lennox Knight and his family have faced an uphill struggle

:07:49. > :07:53.At just three days old, he had to undergo major surgery.

:07:54. > :07:57.He came back and just wasn't well at all.

:07:58. > :08:04.He went onto the highest form of life support for the first time,

:08:05. > :08:07.he had a really rough ride, and we finally got him off that.

:08:08. > :08:09.He came back from theatre for about an hour, and then

:08:10. > :08:12.he arrested, and the life just drained from his body.

:08:13. > :08:16.We could only put full trust in the team at the Freeman,

:08:17. > :08:18.their speed and dedication was the only thing

:08:19. > :08:23.The operation was followed by another 11 procedures, and Lennox

:08:24. > :08:28.All his parents could do was watch and hope.

:08:29. > :08:33.Just seemed to pull through, he got through Christmas,

:08:34. > :08:39.and then he got to February, and since then he's

:08:40. > :08:48.I thought he had problems with his airways, he went down again,

:08:49. > :08:51.needed a lot of reconstruction on his airway,

:08:52. > :08:57.Throughout his treatment, the Sick Children's Trust supported

:08:58. > :08:59.Lennox's family with free accommodation near

:09:00. > :09:05.But now, after 373 days in hospital, Lennox is back home with his

:09:06. > :09:10.mum and dad and his two brothers for their first family Christmas.

:09:11. > :09:13.Whatever happens in the future, we can always say we had them

:09:14. > :09:16.memories with all three of the boys together.

:09:17. > :09:18.What's it like having him back for Christmas for you?
