:00:17. > :00:21.56-year-old Gavin Bolam was hit in Hebburn

:00:22. > :00:25.by a driver who'd shared six bottles of wine in a nearby pub.

:00:26. > :00:28.Ahead of New Year's Eve, police are warning people

:00:29. > :00:38.I was woken up by the telephone ringing.

:00:39. > :00:42.The guy on the other end said he was a PC from Northumbria Police

:00:43. > :00:44.and said that my dad had been involved

:00:45. > :00:47.in a serious road traffic incident.

:00:48. > :00:51.So I asked the officer how bad my dad was and he said

:00:52. > :00:55.that he regretted to have to tell me that my dad hadn't survived.

:00:56. > :00:58.Kelly Bolam took this nightmare telephone call

:00:59. > :01:05.Her father Gavin was killed by 39-year-old drunk driver Alan Hale,

:01:06. > :01:08.who mounted the pavement in his Mercedes, hit Gavin,

:01:09. > :01:10.didn't stop, and then collided with other cars before

:01:11. > :01:17.He was later jailed for six years, but Gavin's family now have

:01:18. > :01:22.You can't help but be angry because that was his choice to go

:01:23. > :01:26.out that night to drink as much as he drank and then get behind

:01:27. > :01:30.Because he made that choice, he took my dad's life away from him.

:01:31. > :01:33.Kelly is speaking out in the hope that other families might be spared

:01:34. > :01:38.For Northumbria Police, this grim story is all too familiar

:01:39. > :01:43.It had an absolutely devastating effect on the family.

:01:44. > :01:46.Kelly might appear that she is altogether now but I can tell

:01:47. > :01:54.I have to do things like what the family liaison officer

:01:55. > :01:57.had to do for Kelly, knock on the door and give them that

:01:58. > :02:03.This is what we don't want to happen again.

:03:06. > :03:15.an opera singer from Teesside, will be seen around the world.

:03:16. > :03:18.After 27 years of teaching others to sing,

:03:19. > :03:21.she's been given the starring role at this year's New Year's Day

:03:22. > :03:28.Rehearsing for the biggest role of her life,

:03:29. > :03:30.this Sunday, Susan Robertson from Wynyard, will be

:03:31. > :03:32.the star at London's famous New Year's Day parade.

:03:33. > :03:36.The event, seen here on a previous year, has a worldwide audience

:03:37. > :03:43.With Susan this year singing the all-important national anthem

:03:44. > :03:51.and a rousing rendition of Rule Britannia.

:03:52. > :03:53.For years and years, I've watched things like the rugby

:03:54. > :03:56.on television and watched people sing God Save The Queen

:03:57. > :03:58.at the beginning of national events and I've always thought,

:03:59. > :04:00.wouldn't it be lovely to do something like that.

:04:01. > :04:03.So, to be asked to do that, it's just wonderful.

:04:04. > :04:10.Susan, who's been a singing teacher for 27 years,

:04:11. > :04:14.was talent spotted for the role while singing at a friend's wedding.

:04:15. > :04:17.A performance which was to impress a very important guest.

:04:18. > :04:22.A chap just tapped me on the shoulder and said would I go

:04:23. > :04:29.It's a chap called Bob Rawls who, apparently, organises

:04:30. > :04:33.So, in that moment, I didn't realise who he was.

:04:34. > :04:41.I, sort of, said to him, that might be nice.

:04:42. > :04:46.So, for this north-east singer, the start to 2017

:04:47. > :04:52.A performance of a lifetime, it'll be watched by millions

:05:23. > :05:24.and quite mild through the night to night, as well.

:05:25. > :05:27.We will see a few patches is of drizzly rain across Cumbria,

:05:28. > :05:30.further east there may even be some clear skies so we could even see

:05:31. > :05:32.the odd patch of mist and some frost in places.

:05:33. > :05:36.On the whole, it's a mild and breezy night with temperatures dipping down

:05:37. > :05:43.For New Year's Eve, then, it's a dry start to the day, on the whole.

:05:44. > :05:46.The cloud will break to give some sunny spells but later

:05:47. > :05:49.into the afternoon we're keeping an eye on this band of rain.

:05:50. > :05:53.Temperatures tomorrow will reach a high of ten or 11 degrees.

:05:54. > :05:56.As we approach midnight, that band of rain is going to sink

:05:57. > :05:59.gradually southwards so, for many others, it looks

:06:00. > :06:02.like New Year's Day is going to start off on a fairly wet note

:06:03. > :06:05.but parts of Northumberland will actually be dry

:06:06. > :06:08.and clear by the time the clock strikes midnight.

:06:09. > :06:11.Into New Year's Day, it's a much colder day that it

:06:12. > :06:15.should be dry and bright with spells of sunshine.
