:00:23. > :00:26.A 15-year-old girl was today remanded into secure accommodation,

:00:27. > :00:29.and with possession of an offensive weapon.

:00:30. > :00:44.The family of Katie Rough at court this morning.

:00:45. > :00:46.The first sorrow filled duty of life without the seven-year-old.

:00:47. > :00:49.Katie seemingly had so much of her life still ahead

:00:50. > :00:55.She died here on Alness Drive, in the Woodthorpe area of York.

:00:56. > :00:57.The court heard today that she'd suffered significant lacerations

:00:58. > :01:02.Police investigations continued at the scene,

:01:03. > :01:05.with a metal detector used to search nearby undergrowth.

:01:06. > :01:11.Meanwhile, the pile of floral tributes grows.

:01:12. > :01:13.Four miles from the scene, the teenage girl accused

:01:14. > :01:17.of killing Katie appeared in court for the first time.

:01:18. > :01:20.The accused, who is 15 years old, nodded to show that she understood

:01:21. > :01:25.Members of Katie's family were also in court and some were visibly upset

:01:26. > :01:31.The teenager is charged with murdering Katie Rough

:01:32. > :01:33.on Alness Drive in York on Monday, and also

:01:34. > :01:36.with possession of a weapon - namely a knife.

:01:37. > :01:39.Outside Katie's School, the feeling remains one of shock.

:01:40. > :01:54.One of my good friend is really friends her mum,

:01:55. > :01:57.and she's taken it really hard, and so have her daughters,

:01:58. > :02:06.Tributes were paid here in York, and also in the House of Commons.

:02:07. > :02:08.I'm sure the whole house will join in

:02:09. > :02:11.heartfelt condolences for the family and friends of the tragic death

:02:12. > :02:13.of seven-year-old Katie Rough in York earlier this week.

:02:14. > :02:16.I also join the right honourable gentleman in expressing condolences

:02:17. > :02:21.to the family and friends of little Katie, who died so tragically.

:02:22. > :02:24.A fundraising page to support Katie's family has been set

:02:25. > :02:30.She didn't know the family, but says she wanted to help.

:02:31. > :02:32.It isn't just me. People all over are UK donating.

:02:33. > :02:39.It's in the heads and hearts of so many people.

:02:40. > :02:41.There's so much love for the family right now,

:02:42. > :02:45.Katie's family weren't speaking today.

:02:46. > :02:56.They already know the pain of what they've lost, but not why.

:02:57. > :02:58.A clear-up is continuing tonight after 70mph winds

:02:59. > :03:01.Thousands were left without power

:03:02. > :03:03.and buildings were damaged by the gales.

:03:04. > :03:07.Forecasters say more gales and snow are on the way.

:03:08. > :03:12.The winds had been enough to keep people awake,

:03:13. > :03:19.The cars parked beside the gable end were buried beneath the rubble.

:03:20. > :03:22.We've been awake nearly all night with the wind.

:03:23. > :03:35.With it being fenced, I can't get in to have a look and see

:03:36. > :03:38.This happened at Pelton in County Durham.

:03:39. > :03:48.In Newcastle city centre, there was disruption after damage

:03:49. > :03:51.to a roof had scattered debris across a street,

:03:52. > :03:54.And at their peak, the gusts had hit 75 mph.

:03:55. > :03:57.In the control room at Northern Power Grid near Sunderland,

:03:58. > :03:59.they battled to restore electricity to homes across the North.

:04:00. > :04:02.Over the course of the day, the staff here have dealt with

:04:03. > :04:04.more than 40,000 customers who have been without power.

:04:05. > :04:06.Gradually they whittled that number down so they've now restored

:04:07. > :04:09.all but more than a couple of thousand of them

:04:10. > :04:15.Now the work goes on to make sure everybody else gets

:04:16. > :04:19.We have to ramp up significantly for events like this.

:04:20. > :04:22.We're well versed and well practised in terms of the impact

:04:23. > :04:25.that the weather has on our power network across our region.

:04:26. > :04:34.But, yes, extra resources deployed across the entire organisation.

:04:35. > :04:37.And many people working outside of their primary roles to support

:04:38. > :04:38.those customers getting back on supply.

:04:39. > :04:41.On the west coast near Whitehaven, huge waves could be seen

:04:42. > :04:46.And at County Durham, a sign of just how bad things have been.

:04:47. > :04:52.A turbine unable to cope with the power of the wind.

:05:00. > :05:01.the oil and gas industry in Gateshead is threatening

:05:02. > :05:05.to make 140 workers redundant, blaming the slump in the oil price.

:05:06. > :05:10.NOV Mission Products on the Team Valley Trading Estate

:05:11. > :05:13.made 180 redundancies in November and has now said it will cease

:05:14. > :05:14.manufacturing altogether later this year,

:05:15. > :05:19.putting a further 140 people out of work.

:05:20. > :05:23.The father of Claudia Lawrence has won his battle to allow families

:05:24. > :05:26.of people who have gone missing, to deal with their financial affairs

:05:27. > :05:29.Claudia, who was 35 and was from York,

:05:30. > :05:36.The bill was championed by Claudia's father, Peter.

:05:37. > :05:38.Dubbed Claudia's Law, it was given the go-ahead

:05:39. > :05:45.in Parliament today, without opposition.

:05:49. > :05:52.You've got to remember, it's 22 months ago that the government

:05:53. > :05:55.committed to this bill, and it's taken a private member,

:06:06. > :06:08.A Sunderland man is calling for smear tests to be made

:06:09. > :06:10.available for the under-25s following the death of his sister.

:06:11. > :06:12.Josh Cliff says Amber asked to be screened,

:06:13. > :06:17.She was eventually diagnosed with cervical cancer

:06:18. > :06:30.You have a normal Christmas, everything was really nice.

:06:31. > :06:32.So happy, just laughing, making jokes.

:06:33. > :06:49.You've either got to do something about it, or...

:06:50. > :06:51.You've just got to sit and grieve,

:06:52. > :06:56.Amber Cliff died just a few days ago.

:06:57. > :07:01.which spread to her lungs and throat.

:07:02. > :07:04.Her brother said she had had the symptoms for two years

:07:05. > :07:12.But doctors had blamed it on other health issues.

:07:13. > :07:16.She'd also requested a smera test to rule out cancer,

:07:17. > :07:19.--smear test, but despite repeated visits to the doctor

:07:20. > :07:21.she had been told she was too young.

:07:22. > :07:24.Eventually private tests revealed she had a tumour.

:07:25. > :07:26.Now her family are campaigning for smears to

:07:27. > :07:29.The problem is, there are no guidelines.

:07:30. > :07:43.The GPs who have said I would have given a smear test.

:07:44. > :07:45.Unfortunately, her GP did not give her a smear test

:07:46. > :07:52.We need a law right across the board so that if somebody

:07:53. > :07:55.is coming in with certain symptoms they can have a smear test.

:07:56. > :07:58.Public Health England said the reason why women under 25

:07:59. > :08:06.aren't routinely screened is because changes in their bodies often give

:08:07. > :08:08.false test results, and that can lead to procedures

:08:09. > :08:12.Josh has started an online petition to get the subject

:08:13. > :08:15.But he says the publicity around his campaign

:08:16. > :08:17.has already made other women look to get screened.

:08:18. > :08:18.The amount of people commenting on Facebook

:08:19. > :08:28.They don't like the idea of going for one.

:08:29. > :08:31.But that 30 seconds or however long it takes,

:08:32. > :08:35.and stop your family going through this.

:08:36. > :08:39.That's what I'm trying to get across,

:08:40. > :08:45.Well, elsewhere, plans for a new ?10 million cancer centre

:08:46. > :08:48.in North Yorkshire have gone on display.

:08:49. > :08:50.It would mean that more people could be treated

:08:51. > :08:52.at Northallerton's Friarage hospital, avoiding the journey

:08:53. > :08:55.to Middlesbrough's James Cook for appointments.

:08:56. > :08:58.The building would be named after Sir Robert Ogden,

:08:59. > :09:03.who's jointly funding the project with Macmillan Cancer Care.

:09:04. > :09:08.When you think of what you're going through, the psychological effects

:09:09. > :09:10.of all the things, you've been in dull rooms,

:09:11. > :09:12.waiting for results and waiting for scans

:09:13. > :09:14.and things like that, to try to get a facility

:09:15. > :09:16.that's got as much going as this has,

:09:17. > :09:19.to make you feel a lot better about, you know...

:09:20. > :09:21.It's not going to change what's happening

:09:22. > :09:24.but it can make you feel a lot more positive.

:09:25. > :09:29.We saw what the gales did last night.

:09:30. > :09:41.Those disrupt their wings have eased slightly but there are still win,

:09:42. > :09:45.ice and snow to add that the problems over the next couple of

:09:46. > :09:49.days -- Bosz disruptive wins. We have a severe weather warning for

:09:50. > :09:52.Cumbria and the North East for the risk of snow over the next few days.

:09:53. > :10:00.There's a covering of snow in places. Especially across parts of

:10:01. > :10:05.Cumbria, the uplands of Northumberland and County Durham.

:10:06. > :10:08.Temperatures close to freezing leading to icy patches. Not as windy

:10:09. > :10:14.as it was but still a brisk westerly. Sunshine and showers

:10:15. > :10:19.tomorrow. Sleet and snow and amongst those bringing a further covering in

:10:20. > :10:23.some places. But those showers become fewer and further between as

:10:24. > :10:27.we head through the afternoon. Temperatures struggling up four

:10:28. > :10:33.Celsius at the very best. And a brisk westerly wind feeling cold.

:10:34. > :10:37.Starting tomorrow evening dry, then we have this area of cloud coming

:10:38. > :10:40.from the north, possibly bringing further snow to parts of the

:10:41. > :10:45.north-east and Yorkshire as we head through the night tomorrow night.

:10:46. > :10:49.Temperatures again hovering round about just below freezing, so some

:10:50. > :10:55.icy stretches to watch out for as we head Friday. The game, the odd sleet

:10:56. > :10:59.or snow shower in eastern areas, things becoming a little bit milder

:11:20. > :11:23.plans. Lots of isobars on the chart overnight which means it will be

:11:24. > :11:26.windy for all. The strongest winds in Scotland, lots of wintry showers

:11:27. > :11:29.with snow getting down to increasingly low levels and some

:11:30. > :11:33.wintry showers in Northern Ireland and northern England. A cold night

:11:34. > :11:39.for Northern England, particularly in more rural spots, frosty and I

:11:40. > :11:41.see for some and some of the snow really blowing around over higher

:11:42. > :11:43.ground in Scotland. Strong wind and further snow to take us into

:11:44. > :11:44.tomorrow. It may
