:00:16. > :00:22.The fire brigades' union says that recently, only 5 were on duty.

:00:23. > :00:24.But the fire service says the union is being alarmist.

:00:25. > :00:26.Our correspondent Mark Denten has been in Carlisle

:00:27. > :00:40.The Fire Brigade union in Carlisle date they are facing a really,

:00:41. > :00:49.really dire situation. Why? They say on Christmas day, there were just

:00:50. > :00:55.four of five full-time firefighters operating in the city, a city of

:00:56. > :01:00.108,000 people. With two major factories, of course, in the cities

:01:01. > :01:04.and another. They have real concerns about the future. The management of

:01:05. > :01:06.the Fire Service say that they accept those figures are right and

:01:07. > :01:12.that there were four or five full-time crews in duty in Carlisle

:01:13. > :01:15.on Christmas Day evening but they say that rather crews that could be

:01:16. > :01:19.called in from other parts of Cumbria if they were needed. They

:01:20. > :01:23.also say the number of instances have fallen over the last five years

:01:24. > :01:27.that they need to attend. The deputy chief fire officer for Cumbria is

:01:28. > :01:31.Steve Newell. That is absolutely ludicrous to

:01:32. > :01:36.suggest that we were in a dire situation. We would have on average

:01:37. > :01:40.35 of our 45 fire engines available. Yes, the union are right to see that

:01:41. > :01:43.in a city on that particular day there were only one of the two fire

:01:44. > :01:46.engines available but what I can say is that there is adequate and

:01:47. > :01:50.appropriate support available from the nearby retained fire stations

:01:51. > :01:57.such as Longtown, Brampton and Britain.

:01:58. > :01:59.Cumbria Fire and rescue is recruiting new firefighters and

:02:00. > :02:04.there will be another 11 coming on. They are in their training from next

:02:47. > :02:51.And the perceived effect, even if it's not as great

:03:18. > :03:23.There has certainly been a lot of protest activity, a lot of noise

:03:24. > :03:27.But I do think that gives us a responsibility to show to people

:03:28. > :03:31.that we can produce this in a sensitive way that

:03:32. > :03:33.doesn't have too much of an impact on local people.

:03:34. > :03:37.And that's up to us as an industry to demonstrate.

:06:38. > :06:43.Good evening. It is going to be a mostly dry and settled weekend but

:06:44. > :06:46.it is going to be feeling cold and we start Saturday with a widespread

:06:47. > :06:50.frost. There will be patchy mist and fog as well through the morning, but

:06:51. > :06:54.generally plenty of spells of sunshine. By the afternoon we will

:06:55. > :06:57.start to see this cloud is just pushing in from the east. Bringing a

:07:15. > :07:18.Once again we will see the cloud breaking so we should seize goods

:07:19. > :07:21.spells of sunshine by the afternoon. Temperatures on Sunday perhaps a

:07:37. > :07:38.suspect we can. Unconfirmed about -- concerned about the fog around. Here

:07:39. > :07:48.is Helen with the national picture. Good evening. The weather is upon
