:00:28. > :00:29.But Bright Tribe insists it is improving standards.

:00:30. > :00:38.This is the second day of strike action this week

:00:39. > :00:41.involving three trade unions, teachers here fulfilling a threat

:00:42. > :00:44.first made before Christmas to use industrial action to force changes.

:00:45. > :00:50.I think it's a massive decision, particularly for ATL,

:00:51. > :00:54.this is the first strike we've ever had locally, we've only had two

:00:55. > :01:01.We've had local ones in other areas but this is the first in Cumbria.

:01:02. > :01:03.Staff say the Bright Tribe Trust has broken its promises

:01:04. > :01:05.to improve the school, has left buildings to decay

:01:06. > :01:09.and allowed it to drift into special measures.

:01:10. > :01:12.The teachers here don't want to go on strike.

:01:13. > :01:14.We recognise that it can be inconvenient for some people,

:01:15. > :01:18.but we do need to see progress here, because actually, one day,

:01:19. > :01:22.if we see substantial improvement in the school,

:01:23. > :01:28.The Bright Tribe Trust told us they didn't have anyone available

:01:29. > :01:30.for interview but did provide a statement.

:01:31. > :01:34.It said Bright Tribe is fully committed to working with all staff

:01:35. > :01:37.and trade unions in order to improve standards and provide a good level

:01:38. > :01:42.of education for students at the Whitehaven Academy.

:01:43. > :01:44.Some parents too have joined in, trying to increase

:01:45. > :01:50.We've collected over 1,000 signatures from the community

:01:51. > :02:01.showing support for the teachers and what they're doing,

:02:02. > :02:04.the action they have taken, cos a lot of the parents feel very

:02:05. > :02:06.strongly about what's been happening the school

:02:07. > :02:08.and we want to show our support for the teachers.

:02:09. > :02:10.It's created 500 jobs and invested ?35 million in Morpeth.

:02:11. > :02:15.But the property company which developed the Sanderson Arcade

:02:16. > :02:18.shopping centre could sell up and leave the town.

:02:19. > :02:21.It objects to a planned new retail park on the site

:02:22. > :02:24.of the old County Hall, claiming it'll take shoppers away

:02:25. > :02:30.Our Business Correspondent, Ian Reeve, reports.

:02:31. > :02:33.Morpeth's Sanderson Arcade, a shopping centre that is created

:02:34. > :02:38.500 jobs since opening in 2006, but its property company

:02:39. > :02:43.owner could be on the verge of selling up,

:02:44. > :02:46.dismayed by plans for a retail park on the edge of town, and Hannah,

:02:47. > :02:48.running a baking business in the arcade, doesn't

:02:49. > :02:55.If it does go ahead, it's going to ruin some

:02:56. > :02:58.of the hustle and bustle of Morpeth, it's got quite a nice

:02:59. > :03:02.reputation as a market town, it would be a shame to see it go.

:03:03. > :03:07.The retail park would be here on the current site

:03:08. > :03:11.of Northumberland County Council's County Hall after it sells the land.

:03:12. > :03:14.A new school would be built as well as 200 homes.

:03:15. > :03:17.Joan and Ken have many concerns over the scheme,

:03:18. > :03:21.but claim the county council won't discuss them.

:03:22. > :03:24.They have refused repeatedly to come and talk to us.

:03:25. > :03:27.We have a forum where we're supposed to be talking to the county council

:03:28. > :03:31.We have specifically invited them again just before Christmas

:03:32. > :03:37.The town has got a fantastic functioning town centre

:03:38. > :03:40.and for the last 30 years, up and down the country,

:03:41. > :03:43.towns have been really hit hard by out-of-town retailing and we just

:03:44. > :03:52.feel that this is a wrong proposal for Morpeth.

:03:53. > :03:55.Monday is the last day for people to have their say on the scheme

:03:56. > :03:58.and the county council said it can't say anything at the planning

:03:59. > :04:09.A spokesman did however add that in the interests of impartiality,

:04:10. > :04:11.I should say that Monday is the last day for public

:04:12. > :04:13.consultation, rather than the last day for objections.

:04:14. > :04:15.In case people want to make supportive comments.

:04:16. > :04:19.Well, currently, 1,065 people have objected.

:04:20. > :04:32.A Northumbria Police officer has been given a suspended prison

:04:33. > :04:36.sentence for offences involving indecent images of children.

:04:37. > :04:39.PC Paul Sharp appeared before North Tyneside magistrates

:04:40. > :04:42.and admitted two charges of making indecent images of children

:04:43. > :04:45.and one of possession of extreme pornography.

:04:46. > :04:47.He was sentenced to a total of 36 weeks in jail,

:04:48. > :04:49.suspended for 12 months, and ordered to attend

:04:50. > :04:55.The 34-year-old from North Tyneside was suspended from duty at the start

:04:56. > :05:01.of the investigation and now faces a police misconduct hearing.

:05:02. > :05:04.A blue plaque has been unveiled in Sunderland to mark

:05:05. > :05:10.It's in honour of two Wearside sisters who helped scores of Jewish

:05:11. > :05:15.Ida and Louise Cook used their love of opera to travel to Germany
