:00:16. > :00:19.It was a shocking image - a pet dog left for dead

:00:20. > :00:22.in a woodland grave after having a nail driven through its skull.

:00:23. > :00:25.Today the men responsible faced a court on Teesside to admit

:00:34. > :00:47.Still alive when discovered, 16-year-old Scamp had been the

:00:48. > :00:50.victim of an attack described as barbaric. Brought here to the woods

:00:51. > :00:56.near Redcar, its owner hammered the nail through its skull. Michael

:00:57. > :00:59.Heathcoat, seen here on the left, thought it was for the best. The dog

:01:00. > :01:04.was sick. He and his friend Richard Finch then buried it. As they left

:01:05. > :01:13.court today, Finch was confronted by a member of the public.

:01:14. > :01:18.don't put a nail in its head! don't put a nail in its head!

:01:19. > :01:19.The dog was knackered. It wasn't my direct macro he then explained his

:01:20. > :01:22.that. friend had said he could not afford

:01:23. > :01:30.that. Was too expensive. It doesn't

:01:31. > :01:32.matter! You don't know what you're talking about.

:01:33. > :01:38.He thought he had no option, and I He thought he had no option, and I

:01:39. > :01:43.thought the same thing. I had told them to go to the vet's,

:01:44. > :01:49.and I did not know he had not been to the vet's, he had been to some

:01:50. > :01:53.idiot in the town who had come up with the wrong price.

:01:54. > :01:56.You could face jail as a result of this.

:01:57. > :02:00.If I faced jail for going in supporting my mates, while he did

:02:04. > :02:07.The court heard when the dog was found in the woods by a passing

:02:08. > :02:11.water, I was still alive, semiconscious, and a vet said it was

:02:12. > :02:15.the worst case he had ever come across. The dog was then put down.

:02:16. > :02:21.The man's old solicitor said they had been extremely naive and had

:02:22. > :02:25.been concerned they would not be able to pay a vet's fee, so they

:02:26. > :02:32.took matters on themselves. They now except that doing so was stupid.

:02:33. > :02:35.Heathcock, it was claimed, had been upset as Scamp's health deteriorated

:02:36. > :02:38.in old age. They will be back for sentencing on March the 1st.

:02:39. > :02:41.The plan by Northumberland Council to loan more than ?8 million

:02:42. > :02:43.to the charity that runs the Alnwick Garden

:02:44. > :02:47.The controversial proposal was being debated as part

:02:48. > :02:49.of the council meeting to fix its budget

:02:50. > :02:55.The Garden - created by the Duchess of Northumberland -

:02:56. > :02:58.wants to build a major new tourist attraction.

:02:59. > :03:00.But a number of councillors are opposed to the loan idea,

:03:01. > :03:07.They began talking at 3 o'clock and were still debating at 7.

:03:08. > :03:11.The vote to agree a 5% council tax increase was no surprise.

:03:12. > :03:14.It's the highest increase for years, with most of it to be spent

:03:15. > :03:21.But the most politically charged topic was the plan for this council

:03:22. > :03:26.to borrow ?8.5 million to then lend to the charitable trust running

:03:27. > :03:31.Alnwick Garden, created by the Duchess of Northumberland.

:03:32. > :03:33.The trust wants to build a new Play Village attraction

:03:34. > :03:37.near the existing Tree House, great for tourism and job creation,

:03:38. > :03:40.according to the Labour group on the council.

:03:41. > :03:47.Critics say it's inappropriate, given that the council has to make

:03:48. > :03:50.cuts of ?6 million this year, ?36 million by 2020,

:03:51. > :03:52.while the Duke and Duchess are one of the wealthiest

:03:53. > :04:06.Residents are unhappy that taxpayers' money going into a

:04:07. > :04:09.pockets of one of the wealthiest man pockets of one of the wealthiest man

:04:10. > :04:13.in Northumberland, never mind the country. It may not be his actual

:04:14. > :04:16.application, but it is the Alnwick Garden, and it should stand on its

:04:17. > :04:17.own, and there has been very little scrutiny.

:04:18. > :04:20.His voice was added to by a number of others uneasy or downright

:04:21. > :04:29.After a number of strongly worded interventions by councillors, that

:04:30. > :04:33.part of the budget was suddenly withdrawn, at least for now, by the

:04:34. > :04:34.Labour leader of the council himself, who had been defending it

:04:35. > :04:36.up until that moment. The loan proposal will now go before

:04:37. > :04:38.a Risk Assessment Panel. It's not clear when and in

:04:39. > :04:41.what form it might return For now, taxpayers' investment

:04:42. > :04:45.in this big new tourist attraction The parents of a football-loving

:04:46. > :04:54.five-year-old boy with terminal cancer say scans have revealed

:04:55. > :04:58.he has developed a new tumour. Sunderland fan Bradley Lowery,

:04:59. > :05:02.who has neuroblastoma, recently underwent further treatment

:05:03. > :05:08.in an effort to prolong his life. However, on social media tonight,

:05:09. > :05:10.Bradley's parents said scans showed a tumour had developed

:05:11. > :05:13.at the base of his back. They said they are devastated,

:05:14. > :05:17.but are waiting to receive More than 600 jobs have

:05:18. > :05:21.been saved on Teesside, after one of its biggest chemical

:05:22. > :05:23.companies converted its plant The gas - often seen

:05:24. > :05:26.as controversial - is shipped from America and used

:05:27. > :05:30.at Sabic's Wilton site. The company claims the move saves

:05:31. > :05:32.money as well as jobs, at a plant that had been

:05:33. > :05:37.at risk of closure. Our Business Correspondent

:05:38. > :05:41.Ian Reeve reports. The very heart of Teesside's

:05:42. > :05:44.Wilton chemical site. Known as the 'cracker',

:05:45. > :05:47.this plant takes in gases and liquids and turns out ethylene

:05:48. > :05:50.and propylene, the building blocks for many of our everyday items -

:05:51. > :05:55.packaging, shampoo, detergents. And from today the cracker has been

:05:56. > :05:58.modified so that it can process fracked gas,

:05:59. > :06:00.shipped from America. And that, says its company

:06:01. > :06:16.owner, is good news. We have really brought this from a

:06:17. > :06:20.very near-term future, with some concern as to whether or not we

:06:21. > :06:23.would be here in the next year or year and a half, to a position where

:06:24. > :06:26.all of a sudden, we are making plans for the next 20 years.

:06:27. > :06:29.But what if it was fracked gas from this country -

:06:30. > :06:35.probably coming in the years ahead, and possibly more controversial?

:06:36. > :06:42.If those feed stocks all of a sudden come close to us, we will definitely

:06:43. > :06:45.study it, and then see whether or not, within the opportunities that

:06:46. > :06:46.arise, we can use them. The move to US fracked gas though

:06:47. > :06:49.means the 630 jobs here are safe, And Emma, an apprentice,

:06:50. > :07:01.now has good prospects, It has given me a loss of hope and

:07:02. > :07:05.anticipation for when everything gets up and running to its full

:07:06. > :07:09.potential, because it is going to make Teesside the capital that it

:07:10. > :07:15.60 years ago, the Queen visited the 60 years ago, the Queen visited the

:07:16. > :07:17.Wilton site, then owned by ICI. Imperial in name, Imperial in

:07:18. > :07:19.Outlook. An exhibition showing a number of

:07:20. > :07:20.Wilton products... The Queen's visit was a mark of how

:07:21. > :07:23.important the site was. The cracker is now owned

:07:24. > :07:27.by a Saudi Arabian company. But today's news -

:07:28. > :07:29.that the plant is here for another generation -

:07:30. > :07:31.probably merits more They're best friends who are now

:07:32. > :07:40.multi millionaires after scooping Paula Barraclough and Lorraine

:07:41. > :07:46.Smith, from Sunderland, They have been best friends for

:07:47. > :07:58.they've always dreamed of. They have been best friends for

:07:59. > :08:04.nearly 20 years, and now, they are multimillionaires. Paula and

:08:05. > :08:07.Lorraine, who call each other poly and Lolly, skipped over ?50 million

:08:08. > :08:12.on Saturday's lottery draw. It still hasn't sunk in.

:08:13. > :08:16.You can't imagine. You can't get your head round it.

:08:17. > :08:18.You always think you know what a lottery won't feel like.

:08:19. > :08:20.But it is nothing like that. Your head is spinning and you can't take

:08:21. > :08:24.it in at all. It is a sickly it in at all. It is a sickly

:08:25. > :08:29.feeling, really, isn't it? Because you can't believe how six numbers

:08:30. > :08:33.can just change your life. Lorraine only bought the Lucky Dip

:08:34. > :08:36.tickets from a newsagent as she was waiting for her bus to work to

:08:37. > :08:41.arrive. The following morning, she checked the numbers.

:08:42. > :08:45.I just went, oh, I am seeing things, I am hallucinating. I started to

:08:46. > :08:48.feel sick. I thought I was going to have a heart attack, and I rang

:08:49. > :08:53.I was on the bed, and the phone I was on the bed, and the phone

:08:54. > :08:58.rang, and rang, and I it said, you had better be ringing to tell me we

:08:59. > :09:00.have won the lottery! And she went, we have!

:09:01. > :09:05.But they say the win will not change them.

:09:06. > :09:09.We are still down-to-earth people, and we will be ourselves. It is a

:09:10. > :09:16.lovely feeling, it is, but once it settles down, we will get back into

:09:17. > :09:20.as much normality as we can. They are planning on celebrating by

:09:21. > :09:24.flying first class to Las Vegas. But Lorraine, who works as a care home

:09:25. > :09:26.cook, says her first purchase will be less glamorous. A new frying pan.

:09:27. > :09:27.Lucky ladies! Now, let's take a look

:09:28. > :09:31.at the weather - Jen, what has Storm Doris got

:09:32. > :09:38.in store for us? Well, we have quite a lot of rain to

:09:39. > :09:43.come over the next 24 hours, and some strong winds and hill snow as

:09:44. > :09:47.well. Let's look at how that pans out through the night tonight. That

:09:48. > :09:51.rain already spreading to all parts. You can see it falling as snow over

:09:52. > :09:56.part of the Cumbrian fells into North Northumberland as well. For

:09:57. > :10:01.most of us, it will fall as rain. Quite a wet night come, temperatures

:10:02. > :10:06.3-4. First thing tomorrow morning, quite a wet rush-hour. Still snow

:10:07. > :10:10.across parts of Northumberland, on and off through much of the day. The

:10:11. > :10:15.rain too will tend to come and go, but the winds whipping up into the

:10:16. > :10:19.afternoon, so gusts widely, anywhere around 40-50 mph. Temperatures

:10:20. > :10:24.around nine Celsius, so it will be a around nine Celsius, so it will be a

:10:25. > :10:28.wet and windy day tomorrow. This storm moves away as we head into

:10:29. > :10:32.Friday morning, and then things are looking much better for Friday is

:10:33. > :10:35.self. Plenty of blue skies, winds will be dying down, and it looks

:10:36. > :10:41.like it will stay dry through much of the day. Temperatures on Friday

:10:42. > :10:46.getting up to 6-8 Celsius, but we have some further wet and windy

:10:47. > :10:50.weather on the way just behind it, hedging in towards the weekend.

:10:51. > :10:53.Saturday looks like it could be fairly unsubtle, quite a lot of

:10:54. > :10:58.rain as well. A similar picture on rain as well. A similar picture on

:10:59. > :11:01.Sunday, temperatures around 9-10. You can get all the latest weather

:11:02. > :11:03.warnings online. The national forecast is next.

:11:04. > :11:07.some sunshine around and light winds. For more on Doris and its

:11:08. > :11:11.impact, here is the national weather.

:11:12. > :11:19.Good evening, a rough patch weather on the way. Time to fasten your seat

:11:20. > :11:20.belt. A high wind warning from the Met office, an
